Rising Pittsburgh rapper Jimmy Wopo was killed in an apparent drive-by shooting on Monday (June 18). He was one of the victims in a shooting that occurred in the Middle Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
According to WTAE, the 21-year-old, born Travon Smart, was one of the victims in a double shooting. The other victim is reportedly in the hospital in stable condition.
Wopo began gaining national recognition in 2016 with the release of his “Elm Street” single. Wopo’s manager, Taylor Maglin, confirmed his client’s death on Facebook.
A number of notable rappers and Hip-Hop heads have expressed their condolences via Twitter.
The madness continues. A 17 year-old student had his life ended abruptly in what seems to be over a pair of sneakers.
According to a report by The Washington Post, James Anthony Smith was gifted his Christmas present early by his mother. Benita Smith purchased him a pair of red Air Jordan 11 sneakers for $ 220.00 dollars. Apparently, the shoes would cost him his life four days later.
On Monday, December 18 Police say an unidentified gunman shot the Ballou High School sophomore on the basketball court of the Frederick Douglass Community Center in Garfield Heights. He was found a block away with his shoes missing shortly before 6PM.
“He was an all-American kid” his mother stated. “He loved his red shoes. He loved basketball. He loved his computer games. I can’t believe he was killed, all over a pair of shoes.” DCPD believe the shoes were the motive saying they “tentatively think it may have been a robbery.”
Currently there are no suspects in the case. Prayers go out to the family.
Last week, two men were finally arrested for the murder of Chinx. Details are emerging about what led to the French Montana-affiliated rapper’s death via a drive-by shooting in Queens.
XXL spoke to Lt. Richard Rudolph, Commanding Officer of the Queens South Homicide Squad, who offered up a theory the NYPD has about the shooting and murder.
Apparently, Chinx got into a fight with Quincy Homere, one of the men arrested for his death, while both were incarcerated in Rikers Island.
“We’re not exactly sure what the fight was about but our perpetrator Quincy probably got the worst of it and he wanted to get back at Chinx,” Rudolph told XXL.
He added, “When he saw Chinx’s career starting to blow, he took it real personal and figured that his [own] career was going south… It just festered inside of him.”
Rudolph also detailed how a verbal altercation outside a show in Philly is what probably led Homere, who was an aspiring rapper who went by Qwality, to exact fatal revenge. He also explained how Homere, the shooter, and his alleged accomplice, Jamar Hill, stalked Chinx the night he was killed.

A family member told detectives that Lowell Hawthorne, 57, admitted the huge tax debt to some of his relatives, and was “acting funny” and “talking to himself” in the hours before his suicide, a law enforcement source said Sunday.
Surveillance video shows the meat-pie mogul shooting himself in the head at his office inside the Golden Krust bakery and warehouse in the Bronx, said the source, who was briefed on the NYPD investigation into the shooting.
Before the shooting, the video shows Hawthorne speaking with a pair of workers who left the room, both of whom were crouched down when they later returned to his office, sources said.
Reportedly, Hawthorne left a note apologizing to his family, many of whom were in his employ.
Unfortunately, now the family will have to pick up the pieces.

Officers were dispatched to a burglary in progress about 1 a.m. at the Classic Buick GMC dealership on the Interstate 20 service road, east of Collins Street, said Sgt. Paul Rodriguez, a police spokesman.
Officer Brad Miller Christian Taylor was a defensive back at Angelo State University. Officer Brad Miller Christian Taylor was a defensive back at Angelo State University.
A security company had called 911 after observing the suspect on camera outside the business.
Rodriguez said police arrived to find that the suspect had used a vehicle to crash into the showroom through the dealership’s front glass.
The officers went and confronted him. There was an altercation. An officer discharged his weapon and struck the suspect,” Rodriguez said.
The suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was not armed with a weapon, Rodriguez said.
The officer, identified by the department as 49-year-old Brad Miller, had just graduated from the police academy in March. He has been in field training and working under the supervision of a police training officer, the department said.
Clyde Fuller, Taylor’s great uncle, described his great nephew as a good man and talented football player who was about to return to college. He said he has many unanswered questions and doesn’t believe Taylor was burglarizing the dealership as police suspected.
“He was a good kid. I don’t see him stealing no car or nothing like that,” Fuller said.
“I think something is going on that somebody is lying about,” Fuller said. “…They say he’s burglarizing the place by running up in there? Nuh-uh. Something doesn’t sound right.”
Rodriguez said the department is in the process of implementing a pilot program for use of body cameras by officers but that no such cameras are currently in use.
So many questions naturally remain. If Taylor was unarmed, where did the guns come into play for the responding officers to use? Additionally, what is the success rate for getting away with robbery when you crash your vehicle into the building? Was he supposed to drive both cars by himself or was their an accomplice on standby?

There were rumors that Malik Yoba was deaded on “Empire” because he said that his gay co-star was very active in the gay community. He also unwittingly revealed that the dude Jussie Smollett, who plays Jamal on the show, was gay in real life. Now, Malik backtracked on this, but the damage was done. The word on the street was that Lee Daniel, who is the co-creator, of the show, was pissed at the “outing.” And POOF….Malik was gone from the show, despite being a major player. It was speculated that he was written out of the how for the error.
Malik took the time to dismiss the rumors and then some with Jet Magazine. ((Streets still talking though.))
JET: What is most disheartening aspect of the situation and how have you been able to deal with it?
Malik Yoba:The saddest part is that the same publications and radio stations that will ask you to interview to promote something you’re doing…they never called, never reached out to me to see if any of it is true, but people want to promote it for quick views and likes. The people who will smile in your face, call you their brother and say they support you are the same one’s who will go and promote these untruths. I pray for them all.
And so it’s just a sad commentary on the world we live in right now. In over two decades in this business or at any time before I’ve never ever had this type of negativity spoken or written about me. And it’s unfortunate because I have children. I take care of a family through what I do. And unfortunately, people have no regards for that. I’ve chosen to stay in my lane. I know what I’m about. I know what God I serve. I know why I’m here. A wise man said to me years ago – using a football analogy: “They can only hit you if you’re carrying the ball.” And clearly, I have a mission and I’ve been true to that mission for over 30 years and a history and legacy of service –that’s how I’m dealing with it.
Mary Lambert isn’t just open about being a lesbian. One spin of plucky single “Secrets” lays bare the singer/songwriter’s struggles with weight, bipolar disorder, a dysfunctional family and much, much more. Says Lambert with a laugh, “I’m severely out!”
“There was a time in my life when I was starting out that I realized the people at my shows knew far more about me than my close coworkers did,” shared Lambert during a recent telephone interview. “I realized that was unique.”
Intimately confessional writing marks Lambert’s 2014 album Heart on My Sleeve. From past sexual trauma to bouts of self-harm, nothing was off-limits when writing the pop album, she said, because “it’s second nature to include pieces of [personal] history in my music.”
That much is clear. The singer’s lyrical honesty first gained mainstream attention on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ critically-acclaimed hit “Same Love.” There, Lambert provides the song’s yearning chorus, later extended into the even more autobiographical breakthrough solo single “She Keeps Me Warm.”
“I never thought I would hear a song like [‘Same Love’] on the radio,” admits the 25-year-old, who came out eight years ago. “I think that’s what was so emotional about the whole thing. I knew the implications of what we were going to do.”
Lambert relished Mackelemore & Ryan Lewis’ offer to honestly tell her story of being “hugely affected [growing up] as a Christian lesbian” — experiences she continues to process through in solo work. Still, in addition to being painfully aware of the potential impact “Same Love” might have upon release, she also knew its possible consequences.
“I’d never been anywhere, never been outside the metropolitan scene of Seattle, and didn’t know anything outside of it,” said Lambert. That meant she had no idea how others might respond to a song about same-sex relationships. As the time came to begin promoting it, she braced for the worst.
“The feeling of peace I got was knowing I was doing it right,” she said of accepting the possibility “Same Love” might evoke deadly backlash. “Knowing I was ok with that let me know I was doing exactly what I needed to be doing.”
According to Lambert, what happened next shocked her.
Not only did she not receive death threats, “Same Love” shot to No. 1 in countries around the world. With more than 136 million views-to-date on YouTube, the 2013 ode to same-sex marriage rose to No. 11 on U.S. pop charts and thrust Lambert into the international spotlight.
A “Song of the Year” Grammy nomination followed. Macklemore, Lewis and Lambert performed “Same Love” with Madonna at that year’s awards ceremony as Queen Latifah married 33 same-sex couples live on television.
“I thought I was going to be murdered,” Lambert half-joked, “But instead I got nominated for a Grammy!”
Her astonishment didn’t stop there, Lambert says. Performing “Same Love” live on Macklemore & Lewis’ sold-out, global stadium tour changed her life. The artist was overwhelmed with love each time she stepped onstage.
“They were cheering and crying…10,000 people chanting my name,” she recalled. “I had kids in rainbow shirts in front, looking at me… I couldn’t believe I was part of this thing that meant so much to so many people.
“All I wanted to do was make sure I was honoring it correctly and being a good representation,” said Lambert of the song.
“I couldn’t believe this was my life, especially after the shit show I’d been through,” she concluded, “It was really, really gratifying.” Gay Voices – The Huffington Post
James McNair, a comedian who was traveling in a luxury van with Tracy Morgan that was struck by a Walmarttruck last June, died when the accident occurred. A settlement with McNair’s grown children and their attorney for $ 10 million dollars was announced today, although Walmart the family settled several months prior.
Morgan, who was seen in New Jersey last December, has been slowly recovering since the crash that took place on the New Jersey Turnpike shortly after a performance in Dover, Del in the wee hours of the morning of June 6. The 63-year-old McNair, who went by the nickname “Jimmy Mack,” was pronounced dead at the scene. DNA Info broke news of the recent legal developments in the ongoing matter between McNair’s family and Walmart.
Wal-Mart made the large payout to the family of James McNair to avoid potential losses from litigation, the McNair family’s lawyer said in court papers.
Under the settlement, McNair’s two children, Jamel, 26, and Denita, 19, will split the payout after their lawyer, Daryl Zaslow, takes a nearly $ 3 million cut, according to court records.
The children had sued Wal-Mart after one of its trucks slammed into a limousine van carrying McNair, Morgan and other comedians on the New Jersey Turnpike on June 7, 2014.
New Jersey police charged the truck’s driver, Kevin Roper, with death by automobile and four other vehicle assault charges.
The actual settlement was signed by in October of last year, but the deal wasn’t made public until January of this year. According to court documents, Walmart wanted to keep the terms of the settlement as it feared the amount would hurt the company’s bottom line. There was also difficulty in obtaining the $ 10 million settlement because McNair wasn’t a high-wage earner and thus the attorney had to justify the large amount.
There has been no comment from Morgan’s reps on the matter.
Weeks after Eddie Routh was convicted of capital murder for killing Chris Kyle, the Navy SEAL who inspired the movie American Sniper, Routh’s parents shed light on their troubled son. His mom, Jodi, says at the time, her son was suffering from PTSD and severe mental illness, and she and her husband, Ray, struggled to get Routh the help he needed. Jodi says she reached out to Kyle, who had established an organization to help veterans with PTSD, to help her son as a last resort.
“I said, ‘Chris, would you be willing to help my son? He’s a former Marine, and he has PTSD, and he really needs some help, and we’re not getting what we need,’” she tells Dr. Phil in the video above. “And he said, ‘Yes. I would be willing to help,’ and that was my first day in several years that I really felt like anybody even cared if Eddie got the help that he needed or not.”
Jodi had no idea that a week later, her son would murder Kyle and his friend, Chad Littlefield. “I would’ve never asked if I had an idea that this could happen,” she says, fighting back tears.
Jodi and Ray Routh’s son, Eddie, a Marine Corps veteran, was recently convicted of murdering former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle — the man who inspired the movie American Sniper — and Kyle’s friend, Chris Littlefield. The parents say their son, who was suffering from PTSD and severe mental illness, had sought treatment from the VA and was released from the hospital a week before the shootings.
In the video above, Jodi takes Dr. Phil through the moment she found out her son killed Kyle and Littlefield. “Our daughter Laura calls. She is hysterical, and I knew the moment I heard her voice that something really had gone wrong. And she tells me Eddie’s killed two people,” Jodi says. “My heart just kept saying, ‘No, no. Eddie could never do this.’”
Jodi says she had a gut feeling who the victims were. “When she told me he was driving a black truck, I knew that truck. I’ve seen it before,” she says. “I knew it was Chris’ truck. I had Chris’ number in my phone, and I dialed it, and no one answered. It was a heart-stopping moment.”
Weeks after Eddie Ray Routh was convicted of killing former U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle — the inspiration behind the movie American Sniper — and Kyle’s friend, Chad Littlefield, Routh’s parents share what they would tell Kyle and Littlefield if they had the chance. Watch the video above, and tune in for Dr. Phil’s interview airing Monday.

It was his body that did it, but it wasn’t him in his right mind,” Ray tells Dr. Phil in the video above. “They think our God-dang kid is a villain, I mean, just the evilest son-of-a-bitch on the face of this earth. Boko Haram attacked another Nigerian city this past weekend, killing hundreds. The terrorist group defeated military soldiers, killing insurgents and civilians, and burning down houses in the city of Maiduguri Sunday (Jan. 26)
At the same time the insurgents continued scorched-earth attacks on villages some 200 kilometers (125 miles) to the south in Adamawa state, slitting throats of residents, looting and burning homes and abducting dozens of trapped women and children, according to Vandu Kainu and other escaping survivors.
Adamawa state legislator Adamu Kamale appealed for troops to protect civilians in Michika, where six villages are under attack. “The attacks have continued since Friday with no presence of security operatives,” he complained.
The multiple attacks come as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry visited Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital nearly 1,000 miles (more than 1,500 kilometers) southwest of Maiduguri, to encourage peaceful elections on Feb. 14 in Africa’s most populous country.
“This will be the largest democratic election on the continent,” Kerry said. “Given the stakes, it’s absolutely critical that these elections be conducted peacefully — that they are credible, transparent and accountable.”
Kerry met with President Goodluck Jonathan and his chief rival candidate, former military dictator Muhammadu Buhari. Kerry told reporters afterward that he won pledges from both to refrain from violence.
He also issued a warning: Anyone responsible for inciting post-election mayhem will be barred entry to the United States, where millions of Nigerians live.
Kerry promised more U.S. support in the fight against Boko Haram if the elections take place peacefully and democratically.
