Moda Operandi Touches Down in L.A. to Fete Johanna Ortiz

There were so many dramatic sleeves and ruffles in the private dining room of the San Vicente Bungalows in Los Angeles on Thursday night that the women wearing them had to artfully dodge one another when it came time to hug hello.
The occasion was Moda Operandi’s new holiday capsule collection with Colombian designer Johanna Ortiz, known for her dramatically fenimine silhouettes — floral prints, blooming shoulders, fluted skirts, flounces — but also marked the e-commerce company’s first significant event since opening its L.A. office earlier this year.
Lauren Santo Domingo, Moda’s cofounder and chief brand officer, said L.A. is the company’s second best market after New York, and after looking at the data the company culls from transactions, she found it’s the number-one market for Ortiz’s collections.
“Our customer is very feminine,” Santo Domingo said. “She loves color, runway dresses, and she likes full looks.”
While talking about the Moda customer and her affinity for Ortiz, Kate Hudson came up with a friend to enlist Santo Domingo’s help getting out of the patio area where the event was cordoned off. Security wasn’t letting them escape the small crowd for a quick smoke.
“Will you make sure to let them know they can do whatever

EXCLUSIVE: Damsel in Dior’s Jacey Duprie to Open a Shop at Platform in L.A.

While many of her fashion blogger contemporaries are boosting their personal brands by launching their own labels through online retailers — a trend as of late — Jacey Duprie of Damsel in Dior is showcasing her virtual world “IRL” with a brick-and-mortar location this fall.
“I want to get it open, like, yesterday,” said Duprie inside Platform, the trendy shopping project in Culver City and location of her pop-up, By Damsel. The two-month lease, with the option to extend, starts Nov. 1. “As soon as we can get in there, get it painted, get set up, we’re open.”
“Everything now is so digital,” she continued. “The whole influencer space is so saturated now, as well. I wanted to think outside the box. I wanted something for people to come and experience the brand firsthand, a space where they could feel everything we stand for, the touch, the smell, the overall aesthetic of the brand, in person.”
She described that aesthetic as “elevated basics, pieces that you’ll be able to wear for years to come, that can be incorporated with today’s trends.” The 600-square-foot shop will feature a range of items she has curated — priced $ 20 to $ 2,000 — from about a dozen

Rolling Stones Retail Experience Pops Up at Maxfield L.A.

A tongues-and-lips logo Artipoppe baby carrier, Bird scooter and Ladurée macarons can be yours at the new Rolling Stones x Bravado pop-up shop at Maxfield L.A. this week.
Timed to the band’s “No Filter” tour, which stops at the Rose Bowl on Aug. 22, when half of Hollywood is expected to rock out, the store features an assortment curated by Sarah Andelman of Paris boutique Colette and the consulting company, Just an Idea bringing together special products inspired by and celebrating The Rolling Stones, including Cactus Plant Flea Market T-shirts with the new barbed wire tongue-and-lips logo, Edward Bess lipsticks, Casetify Iphone cases, Yeti coolers and more.
L.A.-based multimedia artist Matt McCormick, who draws inspiration from Western Americana, painted the installation that resides in Maxfield’s pop-up space across the street from the flagship. And there are plenty of gigantic fiberglass lip sculptures for Insta moments, of course. The multicity experience, which kicked off last month at Bergdorf Goodman, is the brainchild of Universal Music Group’s Bravado merchandising arm.
The pop-up is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Saturday, Aug. 24, at 8825 Melrose Avenue.

Everlane Opens First Permanent L.A. Store

San Francisco-based, direct-to-consumer brand Everlane has opened its first permanent shop in Los Angeles, where it all started eight years ago.
The mission-driven basics line beloved by Meghan Markle, Emma Watson, Angelina Jolie and more, has opened a 3,188 square-foot store at 1101 Abbot Kinney in Venice, stocking Everlane’s denim, Ts and popular shoe styles including the Day Heel and Day Glove, alongside seasonal new arrivals. The space features huge glass windows, tons of natural white and a dramatic archway leading to the fitting rooms.
“Everlane has had roots in L.A. since we launched in 2011. It’s where our first product, the T-shirt, was made just outside of downtown, where they’re still made today. It’s also the home of our first pop-up and recent experiential concept store, Tread by Everlane,” said Tara Shanahan, vice president of retail at Everlane. “We know there is a huge appetite for the brand and after testing concept shops in a few different areas in L.A., we landed on Abbot Kinney for its sense of community, laid-back feel and the incredible foot traffic it sees on a day-to-day basis.”

Eckhaus Latta and Ugg Throw an L.A. Dinner Party in Honor of Their Collaboration

“You can see my house from here,” said L.A. native Este Haim on a summit of Montecito Heights overlooking Los Angeles on Wednesday night. Leave it to Eckhaus Latta to showcase someplace new, a part of town in Northeast L.A. — east of Echo Park — unfamiliar to most. “You can also see the high school I went to. This view doesn’t suck.”
The bicoastal brand, founded in New York City by Zoe Latta and Mike Eckhaus in 2011, was throwing an al fresco dinner party to celebrate their recent collaboration with Ugg.
“We listened to a lot of techno in the car,” she said of the ride over with sisters and Haim bandmembers, Danielle and Alana Haim. “We listened to a bunch of Eiffel 65. And do you remember Rockell? She was a late-Ninties techno artist. When we’re on our way to a party or dinner, we like to put on music that helps inform the vibe of the night to come.”
“These are my sisters,” she continued, as Danielle and Alana appeared. The three were donning the same outfit, head to toe.
“It’s legitimately the same garment,” said Este. “We had the opportunity to, and we just kind of grabbed the bull

Model Georgia Fowler Lands in L.A. as Azzaro’s Wanted Girl

With 960,000 Instagram followers, 27-year-old model Georgia Fowler is on the verge of hitting the milestone million.
“Yes! Come on,” she said at 1 Hotel in Los Angeles, where she was promoting Azzaro’s Wanted Girl fragrance on Thursday night. She’s the face of the perfume and ambassador for the brand, which is reportedly in talks to be bought by L’Oréal from Groupe Clarins. “Follow me!”
Growing up between New Zealand and Australia, she started modeling locally at age 12. Then, at 16, she was signed to IMG Models and left home for New York City. She was able to easily adjust, she said, since much of her childhood was spent traveling with her family.
“My dad was working overseas, because he’s a professional golfer,” she shared. “So, he was on tour, and we were in a different city every week growing up.”
Today, she’s one of Victoria’s Secret’s most recognizable faces, walking the show –– now canceled –– for three years.
“It was disappointing,” she said of the fashion show’s cancelation. The model is also host of “Project Runway New Zealand.” “We had so much fun doing the show. So, we’ll see what happens.”
Victoria’s Secret has been under scrutiny this week after news broke that

Rodarte Presents Eighties-Themed Capsule Collection at L.A. Roller Disco Party

It was an Eighties-themed night seemingly off the set of “Stranger Things” inside Milk Studios on Thursday in Los Angeles, where Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy showcased a limited-edition capsule collection.
“We wanted something that spoke to nostalgia a little bit, but also felt of-the-moment,” shared Laura of the event, a collaboration with IMG’s Made and Mastercard.
Neon lights filled the room, which featured a see-now-buy-now Fred Segal Sunset pop-up in the style of a romanticized teenage bedroom. The line of T-shirts, selling for $ 150 each, and sweatshirts for $ 280 — with “Radarte” written across the front — is a collaboration with artist Mari Eastman and sold exclusively at the retail store starting today until Aug. 14.
“Made approached us and said that they were going to do a series of projects where they want you to unite with an artist,” said Laura prior to the presentation, which had models strutting around a makeshift roller-skating rink. “We immediately thought, ‘Oh, this is an amazing opportunity to work with an artist that we admire,’ and we’ve known Mari for years. She’s an amazing painter and professor. Everything was very organic, and it was just a step-by-step process of doing something that was heartfelt

Rhude’s Rhuigi Villaseñor Celebrates First Puma Collaboration at Kith in L.A.

Off the heels of Rhude’s Paris Fashion Week debut last month, Los Angeles-based designer Rhuigi Villaseñor commemorated his upcoming collaboration with Puma by throwing a party at Kith on Saturday evening.
“I wanted to celebrate silhouettes that already existed, but amplify that and bring it to an audience that doesn’t necessarily understand the heritage of Puma, while incorporating my own twist,” said Villaseñor in a sit-down with Kith’s Ronnie Fieg inside the Los Angeles location of the trendy retail store on Sunset Boulevard. “I’m in a space where I feel like I can concur that. It’s for the new age.”
In front of an audience that included singer Miguel and former New York Giants player Victor Cruz, Villaseñor shared that he wasn’t initially sold on the idea of working with the sportswear company. A conversation with Puma’s global director of brand and marketing, Adam Petrick, changed his mind.
“It was about –– just life and what’s happening in society, and I felt that he took a stand,” said Villaseñor. “It’s important to take a stand…We talked about gun violence and different things that I personally care about…I thought it was larger than just a partnership of products. It’s about ethics.”

Rodarte Teaming With Made for Capsule Collection, L.A. Party

Rodarte is throwing a summer party with the Bangles’ Susanna Hoffs on Aug. 1 in Los Angeles.
The Eighties-themed concert bash is being held in collaboration with Made and Mastercard to celebrate a new capsule collection of “Radarte” pieces incorporating artwork by Los Angeles-based painter Mari Eastman, which will be sold at L.A.’s Fred Segal beginning Aug. 2. The event is expected to draw 300 guests, including friends of Kate and Laura Mulleavy, models, celebrities and fashion notables from the Endeavor agency roster. (The designers are represented by the talent agency, which also owns Made.)
“We are so excited to make these T-shirts and sweatshirts featuring artwork by artist Mari Eastman. We are such fans of her body of work,” the Mulleavys said in a statement of the capsule, which will also incorporate blockchain technology developed by Mastercard.
“Mastercard is happy to be a part of this collaboration. We will address the 94 percent of supply chain leaders who think digital transformation will fundamentally change supply chains for the better with the unveiling of a technology that will help consumers explore the journey of the product and shop with confidence,” said a company statement from Mastercard.

Jussie Smollett Stunts On Attackers During L.A. Show

Jussie Smollett Performs At The Troubadour - West Hollywood, CA

Source: Scott Dudelson / Getty

Jussie Smollett didn’t waste time getting back into the limelight after his alleged attack in Chicago by a reported pair of men who shouted racist and homophobic slurs. During a concert in Los Angeles, Smollett took to the stage ahead of his performance and eloquently stated that he “couldn’t let those motherf*ckers” win.

TMZ reports:

Jussie performed in WeHo at the famed Troubadour in front of a packed audience of 400 and generally addressed the incident in Chicago. He told the crowd he’s okay and still healing.

He asked for solidarity and the crowd was with him, as he said, “I’m going to stand strong with y’all.”

At the end of the show, Jussie lit up the stage with a call to action about being black, being gay and being proud. The crowd went absolutely wild.

Chicago police are still investigating the attack and Smollett says he is cooperating with the authorities in order to bring his attackers to justice.

L.A. Reid On Not Bailing Bobby Shmurda Out: “It’s A Different Day”

Epic Records CEO L.A. Reid has been enduring some criticism for not bailing out breakout label star Bobby Shmurda after his arrest late last year on a bevy of charges. Reid explained his reasons for not bailing out the troubled rapper while explaining the times have changed.

Shmurda, who is currently awaiting trial, has been in jail since last December after investigators pegged him as the ringleader of a violent New York-based Crips gang known as GS9. Fellow rap artist Rowdy Rebel and other members of the GS9 gang have also been arrested and charged since Shmurda’s downfall. Reid has kept relatively mum about the developments in the case but shared more details in an interview with the good folks over at Rap Radar.

From The Urban Daily:

“Well, it made me feel like people don’t know anything about my business, right? It’s really not their business. That’s the truth about it, right? Um, we’re not elected officials here. And we’re not at liberty to disclose how we do business. It’s fair practice, I can tell you that. But, it’s not the industry that it once was. We seriously don’t make the money we used to make. That’s a fact of life, right?

“Bobby Shmurda is not the same as Snoop Dogg and Murder Was The Case, who’s coming off The Chronic and his first album. It’s a different era, ya know? And, we’re a publicly held corporation. We just aren’t in the same position we were in back in those days. So, it’s a different day.”

Neil LaBute Q&A: The Controversial Playwright Talks About His L.A. Theater Takeover

2014-07-24-NeilLaButebyAaronEckhart.jpg

Fans of safe and saccharine theater in Los Angeles better run and hide this summer because acclaimed and controversial playwright Neil LaBute doesn’t just have one production currently in town — he has two!

Vilified and labeled as a misanthrope and misogynist thanks to his unflinching brand of art, indeed his plays and films have shocked many, including films In the Company of Men, Your Friends & Neighbors, Nurse Betty and The Shape of Things to Come. It’s interesting to have LaBute’s unrelenting drama, often filled with self-absorbed characters and very poignant and disturbingly social themes, takeover Los Angeles theater.

Continuing with his beauty trilogy in Reasons to Be Pretty at the Geffen Playhouse, LaBute takes on society’s ongoing fixation with beauty and in particular one man’s inability to say the right thing — ever. When Greg makes an innocuous, off-handed remark about his girlfriend Steph, it triggers a battle by which their relationship will forever be defined. Tony nominated for Best Play, Reasons to Be Pretty continues a series that includes The Shape of Things, Fat Pig (a previous Geffen Playhouse hit) and Reasons to Be Happy.

Meanwhile, across town on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood, LaBute’s personal In a Dark Dark House focuses on the many effects of sexual abuse and the way society might be expected to react to abused victims.

While LaBute has recently directed episodes of AMC’s “Hell on Wheels” as well as the good natured ensemble comedy Death at a Funeral possibly giving way to a kinder and gentler LaBute, it’s his taut dramas that have caused critics and some audiences to label him as a pariah.

Who can forget Aaron Eckhart’s character Chad in In the Company of Men hatefully blather, “Women. Nice ones, the most frigid of the race, it doesn’t matter in the end. Inside they’re all the same meat and gristle and hatred just simmering.”

Or that other gem of his, “Never trust anything that can bleed for a week and not die.”

You can see why LaBute is a lightning rod, even if the man himself doesn’t.

Your name and work evoke a strong gut reaction. Do you consider no reaction the worst kind of reaction?
I probably do. I would think just about anybody would feel that way. We’re taught at some age to always want positive reaction but it makes sense when you’re out there asking questions, which is a big part of what playwrights are supposed to do, not always having answers but at least asking questions. I think, depending on the questions, it’s very important to take the temperature of people. If people think you have nothing to say or you’re of little interest that would probably be the worst.

If everybody were to love your work, is that not the reaction you would want either?
I’m not the kid in class who only wants negative attention, that’s certainly not me. I’ll take nothing but positive attention, that’s OK. I feel that I’ve had almost negative attention for some things. I know what it feels like on both ends. You’re always trying to connect and tell stories that are different than what everyone else has. I’m always looking to connect with an audience, and yet, sometimes it’s negative but through that negativity sometimes you’ve left them with something to think about. I think both sides of that can be useful.

In college, some of your plays where shut down immediately after their premieres. How do you define success–just opening?
Getting in front of an audience, in this world, is the requirement for the endgame, at least for theater. Once you’ve written something you’re part of the way there. You do need to get in front of an audience. To have a connection with an audience is ultimately the goal.

With everything you’ve accomplished, is there still room for you to grow as an artist?
Of course, that’s why I probably go back to teach as often as possible, just because you learn a ton from teaching people. There are so many parts of this world that I’m interested in. I get more interested in editing as I work in film; I haven’t done much television and that world is new to me. Broadway is still a creature that I’m weary of. Event at my age, there are a lot of aspects that I have to learn or try to fail at.

Your name sparks a reaction. What’s the biggest misconception about you?
The ones that I hear upon meeting people sometimes are, ‘You’re much nicer than I thought you’d be.’ I wonder what it was exactly they were thinking. They imagine you’re the worst. They never seem to think you’re the best at what you can imagine. You were able to think of something, therefore, that must be you. Also, for the last seventeen – eighteen years, there’s been this label of misogyny that started with In the Company of Men, that’s a hard one to kick because people label you and once they’ve done that, they make it very hard for you. If they see something else, they’ll say, that’s no as misogynistic. For a movie that so many people actually saw as being a critical essay of men, being labeled misogynistic I thought was strange.

Is it fair that 17 years later people so closely identify you with that film?
I don’t think it would hurt to reassess things every five years or so. That would be nice of people to check in on that sort of thing. I know how it happens but it’s a bummer when you don’t agree with it.

Can you talk about the power of the written word and what the various outlets mean to you?

Theater is still a place that allows you to say anything you want to say and take on anything that is of interest to you. There is no taboo, not for me at least. There’s nothing that shouldn’t be taken on.

Film, I think, is a medium that people still see as a more popular form of entertainment. Television, I think, is becoming a great place for writers and storytellers. I like this idea of telling multiple stories about a set of characters. I always turn the page and write about a new group of people. For a writer, that’s a really interesting task to take on.

You have two shows currently playing in Los Angeles. What’s that like?
They’re two very different ones as well. I’m really excited by the people who are in them and also the directors.

What originally inspired these two productions?

You never know. I ended up with this third play in this trilogy about beauty; and I knew I wanted to do something about beauty and the way that we’ll change ourselves or change for others. In a Dark Dark House was just a story that came to me, not thinking about my own past so much as filtering what I knew about the lives that these characters have and then wanting to tell a story about siblings.

You’ve called In a Dark Dark House very personal, yet this version was tweaked from its original form when it premiered in New York. Is it still as personal now?
I think so. The work that was done honed the structure and I moved things around and ultimately I think this version is the best structure of the play. It’s not autobiographical but it’s touching on things that were close to my life.

So plays are never finite?
Oh God no! I just wrote a new monologue for Amber Tamblyn in Reasons to Be Pretty. She had some questions and thoughts and it led me to write something. They’re finished for now until somebody opens the book again and you start working on it again.

Reasons to Be Pretty marks your fourth collaboration with the Geffen Playhouse. What do you like about that theater?
It’s nice to have a home somewhere. Because you can spread yourself so far around and with so many people, it’s always great to go back to a place or group of people who you know and work with. It’s great when the Geffen is interested in me doing something again. I love the space but I also love the people who run the place.

Are you happy playing in intimate theaters or do you want Broadway or the Pantages, which is the big theater in Los Angeles?
I tend to write things that are often pretty small cast and I love small theaters. That said, there are things you write that you think could be for Broadway but I tend not to think or write in those terms. Sadly, what usually drives people to think something would be good for Broadway is the fact that they have some star who might be interested. Rare is the play that I’ve written that I think it can only fit on a stage for a thousand people. They’re often very intimate character studies.

You always get great talent in your plays, from David Duchovny to Ed Harris. What attracts big name actors to your work or is it that they just have to work?
It’s probably a mix and that’s OK for me. I think actors do, at some point, get a sense of a person who like actors and writes for actors, and is interested in them. I certainly feel that I’ve always liked actors and they get a buzz off me that says that. I never tend to write for people, as many good actors as I’ve had, I always have written just for characters and then good actors will appear. But like you said, some actors just want to work.

What do you hope audiences take away from a production of yours?
I just hope that there’s something that they find there, whether it is characters or themes. I tend not to write about themes so much, but I love the idea that somebody in today’s world, because we’ve created this kind of speed that we devour information these days, that any time that somebody goes to see your work and thinks about if for any length of time is a total victory.

Both Neil LaBute productions play through August 31. In a Dark Dark House plays at the Matrix Theatre, and Reasons to Be Pretty plays at the Geffen Playhouse.
