Lafayette 148 Pre-Fall 2019

Creative director Emily Smith’s formula for pre-fall was a little bit American southwest mixed with the work of light and space artist James Turrell, who is best known for the Roden Crater, a large-scale installation set inside a volcanic cinder cone in the Painted Desert region of Arizona. The result was a wide range of breezy silhouettes balancing a sense of ease with cool. Smith has been steering the brand in a younger direction the past few seasons, and this collection seemed to mark the full realization of those efforts.
References to the inspirations were light, and seen only through ombré, tie-dye and landscape prints in rich, earthy tones. A buttery camel leather coat with ombré effect displayed the collection’s sleek sensibility, while a gray leather jacket and skirt with the same dip-dye effect leaned more edgy and fun. Dresses were used as a canvas and featured abstract sand dunes and cloud prints — none of which read literal. An elegant chambray dress with obilike belt was the closest thing to Wild West fashion. She focused on silhouettes that lend themselves to easy summer dressing, including lounge-y and chic pajama sets, cotton wrap-front blouses and a great oversized travel scarf created by

Galeries Lafayette and Ester Manas to Offer One-Size-Fits-All Fashion

A NEW SIZE: Redefining the age-old “one size fits all” notion, a collection of adjustable dresses, tops and trench coats designed by Ester Manas will be sold at Galeries Lafayette this spring.
“It’s a collection that draws on the idea that all women must be dressed,” explained Manas, winner of the department store’s prize at the International Festival of Fashion and Photography in Hyères, France, this year. Pointing to a sweatshirt with a bright red elastic belt, the designer explained that the collection, called “Fashion for All,” is meant to span a range from European size 34 to size 50, thanks to the help of belts, straps and snaps.

“We liked this open vision of fashion,” noted Alix Morabito, fashion director of Galeries Lafayette. The department store was interested in pursuing something “playful and very free” for the season, which worked well with Manas’ approach, she added.
The two showed how a gathered shirt sleeve on a cotton dress could be extended to cover part of the arm; the print was stripes of text: “xs, s, m, l, xl, uni.”
Manas also conveyed a body-positive message.

Lafayette 148 Resort 2019

Creative director Emily Smith’s efforts to take Lafayette 148 into more youthful territory hasn’t gone unnoticed. She’s injected the brand with a sense of polished ease, balancing staple shirting with subtle updates against more fashion-driven statements that are still approachable.
She’s long mined inspiration from art, architecture and travel, this season focused on Sonia Delaunay, a Ukrainian-born French artist in the Twenties who also held roles as a costume designer and automobile designer. There was a gloss of Art Deco references with a fresh approach. Smith worked Delaunay’s love of geometric motifs into circular patterns decorating flirty dresses and stripes onto separates.
The big story here was the “third layer” item — lightweight outerwear that topped off looks without the weight. A silk trench in oversize check was both playful and cool, while an embossed leather duster maintained effortless sophistication styled over office essentials. The linear lines of one bluish gray coat were marked with hand-embroidered chains mirroring the contrast stitching of a core black and white group. The ease of the outerwear translated to other categories, too, namely boyfriend shirting and soft-tailored suiting — in particular, a ruby red set was the perfect holiday outfit for a girl who wants chic

Lafayette 148 Pre-Fall 2018

Lafayette 148 has long mined inspiration from art. For pre-fall, creative director Emily Smith looked to two of her favorite movements — Vienna Secession and the Bauhaus School — to inform the collection’s balance of graphic prints, linear lines and overall relaxed undertone.
The brand’s approach to design is buy-now-wear-now; for the pre-fall delivery window, essentially the summertime. Lightweight packing essentials that can mix and match and come wrinkle-free came top of mind. Leisurely pajama sets, a flirty red asymmetric dress and those with triangular motifs were some of the most comfy.
A focus on length generated a strong assortment of trenches and duster coats. A khaki version cut in cotton with a bit of linen had a great hand touch, while the red over a monochromatic look had intentionally bunched-up sleeves. The latter was paired over a slightly sheer “piano stripe” top inspired by the work of Josef Hoffmann. Elsewhere, leaf prints referenced the whimsical florals of Secession, appearing most polished on a green garden dress.
Versatility was the biggest appeal. A crisp striped suit could work for a business meeting but was still relaxed; paired with a little cami, it also teased seduction. There were other moments of the soft-and-heavy balance,

Galeries Lafayette to Open Eataly

BUONGIORNO PARIS: Groupe Galeries Lafayette has signed an exclusive franchise agreement with Eataly for France.
The retailer said on Thursday it will open the first French flagship of the Italian gastronomic concept in 2018 in a 43,055-square-foot building that it owns in Paris.
That’s located next to its BHV Marais department store, on Rue Sainte Croix de la Bretonnerie, which is a stone’s throw from the future Galeries Lafayette Foundation that is due to open to the public in late 2016, as reported.
The culinary mecca marks yet another new project carried out by the group in the Marais neighborhood, following the renovation of the main BHV Marais building, completed in 2014, and the expansion of the men’s offer with the opening of dedicated outposts.
Eataly, which will include a restaurant and takeaway products, is to complement the food offering developed by Groupe Galeries Lafayette under its Lafayette Gourmet concept, the company said.

Galeries Lafayette Taps Hyères Finalist for Capsule Line

NEW FACE: French department store chain Galeries Lafayette has tapped Louis-Gabriel Nouchi, a finalist in the 2014 edition of the Hyères Festival, to design a 15-piece capsule collection for fall set to go on sale on Sept. 23.
The collection is made up of minimalistic looks in bright colors that use abstract patterns and oversized volumes to mix feminine and masculine codes.
“The idea was to have that masculine-feminine ambivalence, on one side a very masculine woman who becomes even more feminine like that I think, and on the other side a man playing with the feminine codes without being ridiculous. It’s about the right balance between the two,” Nouchi said in a YouTube interview.
“I also really like color, because I think it’s the field in which we can try new combinations, new proportions,” he explained.
A graduate of La Cambre, Nouchi was spotted at the Hyères Festival, which Galeries Lafayette has sponsored for eight years. Recently, the retailer recruited young design duo Marius et Léonie to create a capsule collection for its Version Originale private label. It has also supported the ANDAM prize since 2003.

Lafayette 148 Resort 2016

Almost 20 years ago, as an indie start-up, Lafayette 148 debunked the tradition of Seventh Avenue showroom and headed downtown to the address that bears its name. Today it’s clear the label is a go-to line for that busy, well-traveled woman with better things to do than shop. With the anniversary in mind, design director Emily Smith looked to the quintessential New York woman and what she loves and needs. Also in a nod to New York, a series of aerial photos of the city became subtle references in the clothes: a fade-to-gray ombré pattern on a sweater that recalled a building hidden in the fog or suede paillettes with a touch of sparkle on a tank representing pedestrian-crowded streets.

The bulk of the line’s delivery is based on buy-now-wear-now — a welcome approach for season-confused sales floors. Suedes and knits were key elements, which played out best in a high-waisted red belted skirt with thigh-high slits paired with a red intarsia knit sweater or a rich taupe suede trench worn with soft cream signature flare pants with piping in double-faced wool that feels richer than their price tag. These weren’t game-changing designs, but they offered plenty of chic for that real

Dee and Tommy Hilfiger Host a Dinner to Celebrate the Opening of Dee Ocleppo at Galeries Lafayette

Dee Ocleppo launch dinner

It was a battle of the dinners last night and in true French fashion, there were no victors, only variations on enviable guest lists. At Dee and Tommy Hilfigers soiree on the top floor of Castel, guests including Lauren Santo Domingo, Mario Testino, and Georgia May Jagger took in the fanciful handbags shown against a backdrop of scarlet red lacquer walls. The cause for the celebration? The opening of Dee Ocleppo’s pop-up shop at posh Parisian institution Galleries Lafayette. Cohost Guillaume Houzé mingled with fashion and retail powerhouses including John Demsey and Marigay McKee before the chic set convened for dinner and drinks in a Turkish bazaar–like setting, replete with evil-eye table decor.
