Decades ago, a shotgun wedding locked Edith into a life with a husband she’s not sure she ever loved. Then one Christmas morning Edith wakes to find her husband dead, and the role she played for so long crumbling. Gray-haired, but by no means done with life, Edith has a chance to discover the woman she could have been. Soon questions arise about her husband’s death, and papers discovered in his pockets send Edith unraveling secrets of the man she thought she knew. Edith’s son Brian is the focus of her life, but he may not be as perfect as she thought. Revelations that he might be cheating shock her. Ariana Grande Pays Tribute To the Late Mac Miller

One Love Manchester Benefit Concert

Source: Kevin Mazur/One Love Manchester / Getty

If you fixed your face to say or type anything other than “my condolences” to Ariana Grande, you suck at life. The renowned singer and Mac Miller’s ex-girlfriend paid tribute to the late rapper by posting a photo.

Grande published a black & white pic of Mac on Instagram. There was no caption, but it wasn’t necessary in order to get the sentiment.

Unfortunately, fans aren’t able to chime in (at the time of this post it has been liked 8.7M times) since she had to disable the comments due to trolls blaming her for the rapper’s death reportedly by overdose. Like we already said, if you said anything of the sort, you suck at life.

Ariana Grande and Mac Miller were a couple for about two years and although their split earlier this year wasn’t on the best of terms, she’s clearly hurting at the passing of a loved one. Fortunately, way more people came to Grande’s defence rather than condone petulant trolls.

Rest In Power Mac Miller.

Boom For Real: The Late Teenage Years Of Jean-Michel Basquiat follows Basquiat's life pre-fame and how New York City, the times, the people and the movements surrounding him formed the artist he became. Using never-before-seen works, writings and photographs, director Sara Driver, who was part of the New York arts scene herself, worked closely and collaboratively with friends and other artists who emerged from that period: Jim Jarmusch, James Nares, Fab Five Freddy, Glenn O’Brien, Kenny Scharf, Lee Quinones, Patricia Field, Luc Sante and many others. Drawing upon their memories and anecdotes, the film also uses period film footage, music and images to visually re-recreate the era, drawing a portrait of Jean-Michel and Downtown New York City -pre AIDS, President Reagan, the real estate and art booms – before anyone was motivated by money and ambition. The definition of fame, success and power were very different than today – to be a penniless but published poet was the height of success, until everything changed in the early 1980s. This is New York City's story before that change.

News in Brief: Tearful Anthropologists Discover Dead Ancestor Of Humans 100,000 Years Too Late

JOHANNESBURG—Lamenting that there was nothing they could possibly do, tearful anthropologists announced at a press conference Thursday that they had discovered the bodies of 15 deceased human ancestors 100,000 years too late. “Not too long ago, these early people were alive and going about their normal daily lives, but sadly, by the time we scaled down the narrow 90-meter chute leading into the cave, they’d already been dead for at least 10,000 decades,” said visibly upset University of the Witwatersrand paleoanthropologist Lee R. Berger, bemoaning the fact that they could have saved the group of human predecessors if they had just reached the Rising Star cave system during the Pleistocene epoch. “We briefly considered resuscitation when we found their bodies, but after a cursory examination we knew that they were already gone. If we found them a hundred millennia sooner, this tragedy might have been prevented …

Musings From a Late Summer Night’s Table-Jacking

“Well why don’t you just share the dang table?” the exasperated restaurant owner said, throwing his hands in the air. My friend shot me a glance and a shrug that I reciprocated in a “whatever, I’m hungry” acceptance of anything that would get me a plate of food in the next 10 minutes.

We had been waiting over an hour for a table on the rooftop of the nicest restaurant in our small town. It was a low country boil, complete with pots of crawfish, shrimp, potatoes and sausage. All you can eat, with a band and a late summer break from the sweltering heat of North Carolina in August.

We were sitting on a bench, nursing cocktails and catching each other up on our lives as we waited. The text notifying us to head downstairs to the hostess station arrived as the busboy was clearing the table right in front of us. “We’ll be back in a second!” we joked with him as walked back into the building.

By the time we followed the hostess back up the stairs, we were greeted with the sight of the exasperated owner trying to reason with the couple who had taken our empty table uninvited. They had been sitting on the bench next to us, and had apparently decided they could grab the table before we got back. The hostess whispered to us, “They told me they didn’t want to be on the waiting list for a table up here.” So many emotions crossed her face at that moment, frustration with people who bucked her system, embarrassment and shame that we were standing there without our promised table, and fear over what the owner might say to her for messing up the most essential piece of her job.

“Don’t stress,” I told her. “It will be fine.” Her small smile and thank you told me she appreciated the thought, but I’m not sure how much it really helped to alleviate her worries.

I tell this story not to complain over something as trivial as a restaurant seating order. I am incredibly appreciative that I live in a gentle southern town and can have peaceful nights out with my friends and family. However, as I sat on that rooftop, awkwardly trying to make mealtime conversation with two complete strangers who had just treated me with complete disregard in order to get what they wanted, I saw this incident as a symptom of what’s wrong with our culture as a whole.

Do You Notice How You Impact the People Around You?

There are a million little ways in which we treat the people around us with disregard, most of which we don’t even notice. When you’re waiting at a counter without a clear line, do you push your way to the front, or do you make an effort to ensure that the people who were waiting before you get served first? Do you hold doors for people when you see they have their hands full? When someone looks lost, or afraid and alone, do you ask them if they’re OK?

Every interaction you have in a day is an opportunity to put something positive or negative into the world. When we add each of those interactions, multiplied by thousands of people in a small town, millions of people in cities and billions of people in the world — the balance of those actions snowball into an overall impact. Unfortunately, the negative impact often outshines and reduces the positive impact.

Our rooftop table-jacking companions might have gotten their stomachs filled that night, but at what cost? An already stressed out restaurant owner (who is also the chef) had to leave the kitchen to deal with them, making the kitchen staff work harder and potentially delayed the food of everyone in the building. The hostess, who did nothing wrong was possibly reprimanded or even fired. And my relaxing Mom’s night out became, well… not so relaxing. So many negative impacts to so many hard-working people who were just trying to serve their customers. All for something this couple could have if they had just put their names on the waiting list.

The saddest part of this for me is recognizing that some people are purposely and actively out for themselves, like my accidental table mates were. In fact, there are people who feel that giving an inch to anyone is a personal slight to themselves.

It’s Just Not Normal

Reading Dr. Phil’s book Life Code I had an eerie sense of déjà vu as it followed the pattern of events that I experienced too many times in the past. He calls them BAITERS (stands for Backstabbers/Abusers/Imposters/Takers/Exploiters/Reckless) and in the book Dr. Phil spells out exactly how the users, abusers and exploiters think and act. It was disturbingly spot on.

This selfish and exploitative behavior is so much a part of the BAITERs personality that their bad behavior is rampant and almost unstoppable. I was recently trading stories with a colleague of how a BAITER had once targeted me so severely that it resulted in a stress heart attack. We realized we had been targeted by the same person, five years apart! This BAITERs exploitation and self-serving acts had been so rampant that her victims are starting to randomly run into each other. How many other people have I met that have dealt with her and I didn’t know about it?

Even Dr. Phil admits there isn’t a whole lot of hope for the BAITERS. But luckily, most of us aren’t THAT. We’re just regular people trying to get through life the best we can. The problem is, we don’t do the best we can. Not because we’re bad people. But because we simply aren’t paying attention.

Being Better

I openly admit, I don’t always make the unselfish choice in my own life. I do try to be aware of my surroundings and take the opportunities to create a high point in someone else’s day. If I have a full cart and you’ve got three items behind me at the checkout line, I’ll often let you in front of me. I will hold the door for you, and if you look like you are lost and need some help, I’ll do my best to get you situated. But more often than I’d like, I don’t see these opportunities around me. And sometimes I inadvertently do things that cause bad experiences for someone else. I’m only human after all.

All I ask of you is the same thing I ask of myself. Be more aware. When you see the opportunity to make someone else smile, or ease a little bit of their burden, take it. Maybe you can’t change the world by opening a door or offering a smile. You certainly can make the world a better place for that moment, for that person. Why not do it?

Courtney Love Pens Heartbreaking Message To Late Husband Kurt Cobain

Courtney Love’s daughter Frances Bean Cobain turned 23 on Aug. 18, and the milestone seems to have stirred some emotions in the rock star.

On Aug. 19, Love shared a photo of herself with her late husband, Kurt Cobain, in bed with Frances when she was just a baby. Love captioned the photo, “My greatest love and our precious Bean #missyou #memories.”

My greatest love and our precious Bean #missyou #memories

A photo posted by Courtney Love Cobain (@courtneylove) on

Two days later, the 51-year-old singer shared another image from the same photo shoot and penned a heartbreaking message to Cobain, who died in 1994 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“Makes me feel so sad. Our baby is all grown up now. Jesus Kurt look at her face, what on earth were you thinking..!?!? God I miss you, we all miss you #family #memories #turnbacktime #lovehim,” she wrote.

While Cobain never really seems to fade from the headlines, the late rocker was in the spotlight again earlier this year with the release of the documentary “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” which saw Frances Bean acting as executive producer and had Love’s full support.

The Saddlebag Makes a Comeback! Why It’s the Essential Late Summer Accessory

saddlebags

Leave it to the last weeks of summer to induce a carefree mood among us all. The best way to sartorially translate that breezy feeling of the dog days? Start with your bag—but sans the baggage. Leave the tote at home (too heavy), toss the clutches (let yourself be hands-free!), and forget the top handle (too stuffy). Instead, opt for the laid-back symbol of the hot weather season: the saddlebag. Its charming shape is compact enough to not get in the way—but large enough to hold the essentials—and comes complete with a long strap to leave your palms burdenless.

And it’s no surprise that the conveniently cool carryall has made a comeback. The piece dotted the retro-redux runways of spring 2015, with Chloé reintroducing the piece in miniature size, while Michael Kors kept his classic in a sheeny leather. Throw further back to the chicest seventies heroines of sprawled summers past, like a devil-may-care Jane Birkin and a polished Jane Fonda who slung on fringed and embellished versions.

As for now? Our favorite brand-new choices range from tawny and engraved with a colorful Western motif, to pale blue with hints of a messenger satchel, or rendered out of slick crocodile. But whatever you choose in this era—don’t hold your horses—snag one to wear now and beyond.

WASHINGTON—Testing out different phrases and vocal inflections as he has done almost every night for the past seven years, President Barack Obama sat at his desk in the early morning hours Friday rehearsing a defiant speech he’d give to aliens should they one day invade, Oval Office sources confirmed. “We are a proud, resilient species, and we will never surrender to you,” Obama reportedly said aloud emphatically, before pausing to jot down several potential rewordings in his legal pad as well as a double-underlined reminder to himself to “pound fist at end for effect.” “‘This is Earth; it is our home. We will defend our planet, whatever the costs may be. Your technology may be more advanced than ours, but if you come here seeking to harm our kind, we will know your morals are not as developed as our own.’ Yeah, that’s pretty good. Let me …

Banana Chic: 8 Fun Pieces to Celebrate the Late Andy Warhol’s Birthday

It’s no surprise that Andy Warhol was ahead of his time. Long before Minions, emoji-inspired fashions and celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe, the artist created one of the most recognizable pieces of contemporary art with the image of a banana. In honor of what would be Warhol’s 87th birthday, a roundup (or should we say a bunch) of cheeky yet chic styles featuring the bright yellow fruit. As Zoe herself would say: “Bananas.”

Christopher Reeve’s Daughter Names Son After Late Superman Actor

Superman lives on.

Alexandra Reeve Givens, the daughter of actor Christopher Reeve, has named her newborn son after her late father. She and husband Garren Givens welcomed Christopher Russel Reeve Givens on June 13, a family representative confirmed to People and Us Weekly.

Born in Washington, D.C., and weighing in at 8 lbs., 3 oz., little Christopher is the couple’s first child after five years of marriage. His middle name comes from his paternal grandfather.

“The entire family is thriving during their first few weeks home,” the family rep told People, which also published photos of the baby.

Alexandra Reeve Givens, 31, is the second child of Reeve and then-partner Gae Exton. She currently serves as senior counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee and teaches at Columbia Law School. Garren Givens is director of the White House’s Presidential Innovation Fellows program.

Christopher Reeve, who starred in four Superman movies, died of cardiac arrest in 2004 while directing the animated film “Everyone’s Hero.”

Why It’s Never Too Late For ‘Premarital’ Counseling (Even After Years Of Marriage)

Sarah says her husband Jason, a pastor, can be controlling — wanting to always know where she’s going, listening to her phone conversations and checking her social media accounts — but she says she wants to make her eight-year marriage work.

Jason admits he can be a jerk but says he doesn’t know why he acts the way he does. “I can be controlling and manipulative,” he says. “I want to know what’s happening, when it’s happening, why it’s happening. There have been times I’ve been verbally abusive … Why I act that way, I don’t know. But I know that I shouldn’t.” They turn to Dr. Phil for help.

Dr. Phil tells the couple that relationships continually need to be negotiated to meet the needs of both people. “There’s a formula for success in a relationship,” Dr. Phil says in the video above, “and the formula is this: It’s a function of how well it meets the needs of the two parties involved. In order for it to be successful, you need to learn what her needs are and make it your life’s mission to meet them. And you need to learn what his needs are and make it your life’s mission to meet them.” He explains that marriage is not a 50/50 partnership; rather, both spouses need to contribute 100 percent. “Everybody has to be all in all the time,” he says.

Dr. Phil also suggests that even though the couple has been married for eight years, they should go through “pre-marital” counseling. “I want you to sit down and talk about all the things that are topics in a marriage: parenting philosophy, and religion, and sexual expectations, and division of labor, and finances, and future planning and all of those things that go into a marriage,” he tells them. “I want you to negotiate until you come up with a plan that both of you can be really excited about.”

As for Jason, Dr. Phil says he needs to hold himself to a higher standard to fulfill his role as the man in the family. “If you wake up every day and ask yourself the simple question: What can I do today to make my wife’s life better? You’ll be amazed how things can begin to change,” Dr. Phil says.

Take Dr. Phil’s “Marriage Inventory Quiz” to see if your marriage could be at risk of falling apart.

Seth Meyers And Amy Poehler Reunite On ‘Late Night’ For ‘Really!?!’ Really!

That really just happened.

Amy Poehler made a surprise appearance on “Late Night” Wednesday to reunite with Seth Meyers and bring back their “SNL” segment, “Really!?! With Seth & Amy.” While on “SNL,” the pair covered everything from birth control to Michael Vick, but this time it was all about calling out sportswriter Andy Benoit for his recent sexist tweets deriding women’s sports.

Poehler says there may not be anything in women’s sports that directly compares to the excitement of a LeBron James windmill dunk, but she explains women actually have a lot in common with LeBron:

We wear headbands, we love to travel and, much like LeBron in the finals, we often find ourselves asking, “Hey, can I get some help around here?”

Even the sexist haters can’t deny she makes a really good point. Really.

“Late Night with Seth Meyers” airs weeknights at 12:35 p.m. ET on NBC.

A Special Message for June Brides: It’s Not Too Late to Say ‘I Don’t’

June brides, listen up! I know you have a million things to do, but in all of the wedding mania, there’s one very important thing I want to make sure you don’t forget: No matter how many non-refundable deposits have been put down, or how many folks have flown across the country, or how epic your reception is going to be, it’s not too late to call off the wedding.

I am not trying to be a Debbie Downer about your special day; I’m trying to spare you a lot of time, trouble, money, pain, and suffering down the line. Talk to any divorce lawyer and she’ll tell you that tons of clients realized that things weren’t right before they walked down the aisle, but plowed ahead, anyway.

If you recognize yourself in any of the following paragraphs, you should seriously consider calling things off.

He looks good on paper, but…. Good credentials? Check! Good job? Check! Your families get along? Check! Similar interests and life goals? Check and check! But despite however many times you go over that checklist, you just can’t seem to silence that little voice in the back of your head that tells you that something isn’t right. Whatever you do, don’t ignore that voice. Maybe it’s telling you that you’re not (and never were) head-over-heels in love with him. Or maybe it’s reminding you that you’re not (and never were) all that physically attracted to him. Or perhaps it’s complaining about how his personality can be a little (okay, a lot) on the annoying side. The fact that the relationship makes sense on paper is an important thing, to be sure; but it’s not the only thing. You’re not going to be spending the next sixty years cuddling up at night with his resume. You have to be in love with him in person and not just on paper. And if you’re not, he’s not the one for you, no matter how impressive that newspaper wedding announcement would be.

You’re head-over-heels in love, but….So what that he’s had six jobs in the past two years? And how is it his fault that every single one of his past girlfriends has been psycho? And why should it matter that his credit score is the same as his shoe size? You’re not marrying him for any of that superficial stuff. You’re marrying him for L-O-V-E. And your love is so strong it can conquer all of those problems, right? Wrong. Love is important, of course; but it shouldn’t blind you to obvious red flags. Someone who can’t keep his sh*t together before getting married is not likely to suddenly figure out how to do so after getting married.

Everything has happened so fast your head is spinning! A dizzy feeling might be fun at a carnival, but if you make important decisions when you’re off kilter, you’re likely to find yourself living in a house of horrors before long. Narcissists love a whirlwind romance. This is partly because sweeping you off your feet feeds their always-starving ego. (Look how powerful and magical they are!) But it’s also because they can’t keep up the act of being Mr. Perfect for very long. They need to seal the deal before the pixie dust wears off and you realize that how insecure and controlling he is, and how he’s really in love with himself, not you. If everything seems too perfect and it has all happened so fast, you need to ask yourself what harm would come from slowing down? Why not date for a couple of years and see how things go? If he’s really perfect for you, he’ll still be perfect for you in a couple of years. And if he’s not, it’s easier to find that out before you marry him, not after.

You’re ready for the next milestone, and he’s good enough (for now). Okay, so he’s not perfect. He drinks too much a couple of (five) nights a week and his dream weekend involves parking it on the couch and playing video games for 48 hours straight. You, on the other hand, have season tickets to the opera and think antique is both a verb and a noun. But, hey, you have a plan for your life–and that plan includes getting married by a certain age. (And you’d really appreciate no one mentioning that you hit that age six months ago, okay?) You can’t afford to get any farther behind schedule. Your fiancé is good enough; and what you don’t like about him, you’ll work on changing after you’re married. After all, you have the rest of your lives to figure all that out. Rome wasn’t built in a day, right? True, but you’re not Michael Angelo, and he’s not David material. One of the biggest mistakes people make is marrying someone with the intention of changing him. Stop worrying about your self-imposed timetable. You may think you’re behind schedule now, but you know what can really wreck your schedule? A marital misfire followed by a divorce.

You can tell your friends and family aren’t crazy about him. You’ve picked up on the fact that certain people whose opinions you normally trust aren’t super keen on your fiancé, but you’ve made it very clear to all of them that you are not interested in hearing their opinions on this matter. This is your decision. They’re not marrying him, you are, right? Not quite. Couples don’t live in isolation. There are sets of friends and extended families that you presumably will continue to have relationships with for the rest of your lives. It’s one thing if one member of your A-Team–like your bestie, your brother, or your mom–doesn’t click with your fiancé. But if all (or even most) of your A-Team thinks he’s a tool, you should hear them out. Maybe they’re right; maybe they’re wrong. But you can neither evaluate nor alleviate their concerns if you don’t know what they are.

Stephen Colbert Shaves His Beard In First ‘Late Show’ Promo

What was Stephen Colbert hiding all these years under his “Colbert Report” character? Apparently, a giant grey beard.

In the first promo for CBS’ “Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” the host introduces us to his beard, but then decides it’s time to get rid of it. Colbert tries on a handful of characters with different facial hair, like “the un-Hitler” ‘stache, the half Wolverine and lastly, the fresh-faced, hairless Colbert.

Watch Colbert eat a hot dog with a fork and knife and give his beard a musical goodbye. Follow the show’s new Twitter account and Colbr app for more updates. “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” debuts on Sept. 8.

Live from Encino… ‘The Late Show’

As a writer on both series finales, Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show in May of ’92, and David Letterman’s Late Show in May, 2015, I can say the shows were similar in one respect: both required me to — for one last time — drive to work in the San Fernando Valley.

I know – the Late Show was based in New York. For you.

For me, since September of ’94, it was always an LA gig.

I write, er, wrote for the Late Show with my partner – Jim Mulholland, another New Yorker-in-exile. For years we worked on Dave’s monologue — our specialty — in Coldwater Canyon. But around ten years ago we switched to Jim’s house in Encino.

Before us, Dave’s jokes were produced by young assembly line workers in Guangdong Province, but there was a problem with shipping.

Despite my GPS coordinates, it’s almost like I lived in New York. I worked and slept on New York time, read New York newspapers. Walking my dog in the dark at 5:30 each morning, I listened to 1010 WINS radio. There are palm trees in my neighborhood, and a squawky flock of parrots. But in my earbuds, John Montone is reporting from a snowdrift on Mosholu Parkway.

Dave likes to see jokes before noon. All right, liked. (By the way, did you see the Late Show set in a dumpster? CBS, you big soppy sentimentalist.) That’s 8:45 AM out here. To complete a first draft by then meant setting an alarm for 3:45. Then devouring lots of coffee and news. And, trust me, news isn’t even up at that hour.

Each morning began for me, as it no doubt did for all Late Show writers: by putting on sunblock. SPF 70. Not because I planned to work poolside. But my dermatologist warned me that any further sun exposure — even through a car windshield — and I might outlive my face.

Jim and I have met Dave just a handful of times. Seems like a swell guy. We know him mainly by the jokes of ours he selects and the ones he doesn’t. Had we walked into the Late Show‘s offices, maybe two people would have recognized us. In twenty years, our one contact with a producer — there are advantages to being out of town — was a rebuke over a KFC joke. Thou shalt not piss off a sponsor.

Yet, the show was pretty chill when a Sarah Palin joke incited a mob to storm the Ed Sullivan Theater with ropes and torches.

In two decades of writing from LA, we never missed a show come shine or shine. At the trophy dinner, we are a shoo-in for Perfect Attendance. Even back when it still rained here, it was hard to tell your New York employer that you missed work because Sepulveda was out.

I was born and raised in New York, and consider myself a New Yorker still. Hey, I even held onto my west side apartment. I’ve always warned my wife that I am in LA on an extended business trip. A business trip in which I managed to fit in two marriages and kids. I kept receipts.

Now, I’m retired. In the same sense the Pharaoh’s servants were retired when sealed up in a tomb with him. But I’m philosophical about the end of the Late Show. I have always believed that when one door closes, another door closes.

Comedy legend Carl Reiner knows a thing or two about late night: he’s the only man on the planet to have appeared on every incarnation of the “Tonight Show,” from Steve Allen to Jimmy Fallon.

And with all the changes going on in late night TV, Reiner is very optimistic. While he calls Fallon an “amazing talent,” Reiner especially likes the newest name in late night, James Corden, host of the “Late Late Show” on CBS.

“He’s unbelievable,” said Reiner. “He sings, he dances… he is very graceful and he sings beautifully.”

Check out part two of Carl Reiner’s memoir I Just Remembered here.

Bill Murray Gets Baked For Final ‘Late Show’ Appearance With David Letterman

No one makes an entrance like Bill Murray — and he made one of his messiest entrances ever for his final appearance on “The Late Show with David Letterman.”

When Letterman introduced the comedic actor on Tuesday night, the curtain opened and revealed…a cake. With Murray inside.

While at least part of the cake appeared to be a prop, Murray emerged covered in cake and frosting. And he wasn’t shy about sharing it.

Check it out in the clip above.

In the past, Murray has entered the show as Liberace, Peter Pan, a dumpster diver, a marathon runner and wearing a tux after supposedly waterskiing at George Clooney’s wedding.

Murray was the first guest when Letterman’s show debuted on NBC in 1982. He was also the first guest when the “Late Show” launched on CBS in 1993. Since there are no interview guests scheduled for the “Late Show” finale on Wednesday night, that makes Murray Letterman’s final regularly scheduled guest as well.

Murray and “Late Show” bandleader Paul Shaffer also go way back. The two worked together on “Saturday Night Live,” where Shaffer was the pianist to Murray’s Nick the Lounge Singer character.

Shaffer told The New York Times on Tuesday that the Nick sketches caught Letterman’s eye, and helped him land the gig as leader of “The World’s Most Dangerous Band” for Letterman’s “Late Night” show and eventually as head of the “CBS Orchestra” on the current program.

Hella Late: Azealia Banks Gives Up Twitter For Lent [Photos]

Azaelia Banks quietly quit Twitter for lent. Never mind the fact that Lent started in mid-February and it’s early March. The rapper tweeted Sunday (March 1) that she’s jumping in the “40 days, 40 nights” game a day late and dollar short. But at least she made it, right?

Twitter has been a saving grace for the Harlem native’s career in that it not only provides a forum to her thoughts, it also keep her name in the mix. The latter is definitely necessary when musing over race and white supremacy in one breathe, and getting naked for Playboy in the next. It’s nice that we get to see her range.

Like Iggy Azalea, Banks could definitely use a self-inflicted break from social media. Maybe she should one-up her nemesis and stay the hell off of Twitter for the rest of 2015.

Yeah right.

Read her farewell tweets in the gallery below.

George Lopez Says Blacks, Latinos On Late Night Aren’t ‘Able To Fail Like White People Fail’

George Lopez may be known for his comedy, but the actor gets serious in the upcoming inspirational drama “Spare Parts.”

The comedian stopped by HuffPost Live on Wednesday to promote his new film and spoke with host Marc Lamont about Latinos in late night, immigration and more.

On the topic of his 2009 late night show “Lopez Tonight,” which TBS abruptly cancelled after a two-year run, the comedian noted Latinos and Blacks had a more difficult time staying on the air. Lopez specifically mentioned stars like Queen Latifah and Arsenio Hall who he says weren’t given the opportunity to improve on air like their white counterparts.

“I just don’t think that we’re able to fail like white people fail,” Lopez told Lamont. “Our failures are heavier. When you’ll just leave a guy to get good and just leave him on to get good and we just get judged and criticized every day.”

And when it comes to making films and television that reflect diversity like “Spare Parts,” Lopez says it’s just as difficult.

“No matter what level or what degree you’re on in show business it’s still really hard to get movies made. So this movie will help the next movie get done,” Lopez said early on in the segment. “Gina Rodriguez winning a Golden Globe helps the next show that somebody wants to pitch and the fact that in all of that moment of her being overwhelmed she found a couple of seconds to say ‘this is a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes’… [Latinos] don’t want to divide ourselves in the United States or in entertainment, we just want to be included.”

“Spare Parts,” premiering on Friday, tells the true story of four undocumented Hispanic high school students from Phoenix, Arizona who entered a national collegiate robotics contest and managed to beat engineering giants like M.I.T with just $ 800 and no experience. Lopez’s character is a hybrid of the two real-life teachers who helped and supported the students in their endeavor.

While the comedian said there is an overall lack of opportunities for Latinos in Hollywood, in an answer to a viewer question, Lopez also said the movie would help get rid of any stereotypes that Hispanics aren’t intelligent.

“In our culture and in culture sometimes they make you feel a little be weird for being smart… but we are intelligent people and our dreams matter regardless of if you speak with an accent and people think that that makes you not intelligent,” Lopez answered. “Around the world and in Europe, if you speak multiple languages they look at that as a benefit, but in the United States if you speak Spanish, they look at you like you’re not speaking English. We’re woefully behind in a lot of things and one is perception.”

On the topic of immigration, Lopez urged people to vote in order for policies to change and said that, after being part of President Barack Obama’s 2008 and 2012 campaigns, it was “a little disappointing” that more hadn’t been done for immigrants.

“Immigration has to be reformed and laws have to change but those kids are smart, they deserve a chance,” the comedian said, referencing DREAMers like those portrayed in the film. “This country was built on immigration. And yea I think this movie will raise an incredible dialogue and conversation because one of the kids got deported and then came back and became a citizen and joined the military. We want to live in this country and we want to live happy in this country. Dreams matter and our stories matter and that’s what makes ‘Spare Parts’ really kind of good.”

Take a look at George Lopez’s full interview below.

It’s Never Too Late to Mend: What My Parents’ Divorce Taught Me About Heartbreak

2015-01-04-happynewyear_thumb.jpg

Last week, I sat down to dinner with both of my parents for the first time in eight years. The last time the three of us had dinner was the day they told me they were getting divorced.

I was in college and my mom had called to ask if I wanted to fly home for fall break. I didn’t really think anything of it. I was really excited to get out of the snow for a few days, so I said yes. Both of my parents picked me up from the airport and took me to an Indian buffet for lunch on the way home. I ate too much naan and made jokes and completely missed any warning signs.

As I stepped into our house, I immediately noticed the liquor cabinet was empty; not a bottle of alcohol or a wine glass to be seen. When my Dad asked if we could all sit down in the living room to talk, my mind lunged ahead for answers. In split seconds, I reasoned from the empty liquor cabinet that one of my parents was about to tell me they had a drinking problem. I remember reassuring myself “Okay, this is a curve ball, but we will figure it out.” As I sat down and braced myself for the news, some very unexpected words came out of my Dad’s mouth:

“Ellen, your mom and I are getting divorced.”

It turns out the liquor cabinet was empty not because one of my parents had a drinking problem, but because my Dad had moved out and the contents of the liquor cabinet were now in his apartment down the street. He was the wine connoisseur of the family. That made more sense.

But when you’re an adult and your parents have been married for decades, the concept of divorce can seem so foreign. You’re usually not living at home anymore, so you miss the signs that would have given you a hint. You don’t see the interactions and hear the conversations, so you just assume everything is as it was when you left. I had just assumed that my parents would stay together forever because they had made it past my childhood and young adulthood. Divorce was not an option.

I often talk about the romantic breakups that inspired my website Mend, but my parents’ divorce was really the most influential breakup in my life. The breakup of my family taught me more about mending and resilience and forgiveness than any loss of a romantic partner ever has. Until very recently, it felt too raw and painful to write about.

Though it was impossible for me to comprehend when it first happened, I can see now that both of my parents are kinder, happier and more authentic now that they’ve gone their separate ways. As Louis C.K. says, “No good marriage ever ends in divorce.” I understand what he means now. I am thankful that I no longer have to manage the tension of a marriage that wasn’t working.

And as I learned for the first time last week, enough time has passed where I no longer have to manage the tension of their divorce either. I realized at dinner that our hearts have finally mended. Enough water has flowed under the bridge of life, and enough work has been done individually on all of our parts, where we can now just coexist without feeling pain or anger.

In place of those things, there is just ease. I was so relieved to find at dinner that there was still a chemistry of comfort between my parents that was not erased by divorce; a special connection that exists between two people who made a life and kids together, even if they’ve since parted ways. I have mourned the loss of that for years, wondering if any of our jokes and shared sayings and old stories would ever be resurrected, but I don’t have to pay homage to that gravestone anymore. Our memories will always be there, ready for a “Remember when…” the next time we all have dinner. And it won’t be another eight years.

Before we ate, I looked at both of my parents and gave my best effort to deliver a toast. “This is the best gift,” I said. I couldn’t manage more words for my gratitude, though the occasion certainly deserved them.

So, what did I learn about heartbreak this year? I learned that it is never too late to mend. I learned that sometimes your heart has to break completely apart in order to be whole again. My parents had to get divorced in order for us to be where we are now. All of those cracks and tears have mended to form something better than what was there before; kinder hearts, more compassionate hearts, more authentic hearts. We’re all better for it. If you had told me that eight years ago, I would have told you to fuck off. But now, I’m grateful.

Though I know it will be hard to remember this the next time my heart breaks, I will strive to have faith that something better awaits. And that faith is what I wish for all of you in 2015.

Happy New Year.

The Case for Dramatic Winter Gloves: Upgrade Those Formless Mittens Before It’s Too Late

Photographed by David Sims, Vogue, September 2014

We get it: You talk with your hands. But don’t think that covering up that tasteful manicure and carefully curated ring selection is muting you this season. A well-chosen glove heightens the drama and beauty of any gesticulation; it’s the missing link your hands—and wardrobe—have been looking for. And there are so many options, from a dramatic, Cruella de Vil opera glove (like dipping an arm to the elbow in cashmere lining) to a more masculine, lion-in-winter glove (favored by aging monarchs and CEOs alike): black leather, darts at the wrist, seamless, slightly pointy fingers. There’s the Victorian lady approach, all covered buttons in brown calfskin. Take any of them off inside and give a playful limp glove-slap to your interlocutor—don’t you look storied? You’re basically Joan Crawford, only with real eyebrows.

Gloves are the masquerade-mask of the hands. Gloves can make any wearer bolder. You can imagine Grace Kelly flagging down a taxi, clutching limp white gloves in her waving hand and a pillbox suitcase in the other. Or just as easily see Caroline de Maigret slouching into an oncoming lane, biker gloves snapped on, leaning listlessly out to traffic, arm outstretched. See? Chic. Plus, they’re just so damn efficient. Not only do they keep your digits toasty (or at least ward off a chill), but they’re the ultimate nod to urban protection. You can see why the boxers do it (and why those Alexander Wang H&M homages were snapped up so quickly)—gloves make you feel like you’re about to take on any adversarial element. Because there’s a grittier side to the glamour, especially when you can’t be in a subway or drugstore for a minute without a loudspeaker announcement that “cold-and-flu-season” is upon us (and you thought it was the holiday season). In these compromising conditions, gloves make you feel invincible. Grab every hang-strap and slide a hand down every guardrail with impunity. Keep gloves on in the supermarket and carry your shopping basket with covered hands. You can traipse and gallivant around all day, and, when evening falls and you’re having a cocktail with a friend, remove your gloves to embrace (it’s only polite) and tear into a crostini. Your hands are still as clean and fresh as when you put them on, which is not to mention the refined elegance of glove removal. Has something so austere ever looked so seductive?

Here, the best gloves to play up your dramatic side this season.

This Man Didn’t Realize He Was In A Group Message With His In-Laws Until It Was Too Late

Here’s a lesson for all of you married folks: beware the dangers of group messages, especially where in-laws are concerned.

On Tuesday, one Redditor shared a rather cringeworthy screenshot of a Facebook message conversation he thought he was having with just his wife. “Chatting with my wife about an overseas vacation with her family,” he wrote. “I didn’t realize all my in-laws were included on the message.”

2014-12-17-aalIOUkwZ1.jpg
Courtesy of the Redditor

And just how did his wife’s family respond to the gaffe?

“My in-laws never reacted,” he told The Huffington Post. “I believe they are taking the ‘we never saw it’ approach.”

Understandable. The Redditor’s comments lead us to believe that his in-laws are not the kind of people who find oral sex wordplay amusing.

“My mother-in-law is so Catholic she wears a tiny veil on her head when she goes to mass,” he wrote.

And in case you were wondering, the Redditor also explained that he sent the very elated-looking emoticon before he had seen the message from his wife about it being a group conversation. We imagine his emoticon of choice after the whole ordeal looked a lot more like this:
