Alber Elbaz Was Pushed Out at Lanvin; Vogue’s Sarah Mower Reflects on His Legacy

lanvin spring 2016

It is very difficult to keep a calm voice in the midst of a drama, but how is it that Alber Elbaz—one of the most loved, most prolifically creative, most hardworking and loyally long-serving designers—has actually been dismissed?

This scarcely believable bombshell came in a letter to the press sent directly from Elbaz this afternoon. “At this time of my departure from Lanvin on the decision of the company’s majority shareholder,” he writes, “I wish to express my gratitude and warm thoughts to all those who have worked with me passionately on the revival of Lanvin over the last 14 years . . . together, we have met the creative challenge presented by Lanvin and have restored its radiance and have returned it to its rightful position among France’s absolute luxury houses.”

Again, we are pitched back into the unavoidable question that has been roiling in the atmosphere since Raf Simons quit Dior only last week: Exactly what place of strife has today’s fashion industry become? What illness has taken hold at the very top of fashion that is pitting the best and most visionary talents of our times against the management of the companies who hired them? And how do we, the audience of women who buy clothes, reconcile that with what we know of the leaders we look up to, whose shows we enthusiastically attend and whose narratives we carefully analyze and appreciate every season? And who are, in one way or another, dropping like flies?

I can’t answer that. As of this time, I can only speak as someone who has known Alber Elbaz since he stepped into this house. Witnessing over many years how he respected and cared for everyone who worked for him—the infinitely skilled seamstresses, whom he was well aware were supporting their families daily; the young team of designers he nurtured; the friendly press people who were integral to his world—I find it painful to imagine the scene at Lanvin headquarters on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Alber, clearing his desk. Fired.

I last saw Alber in his studio days before his immensely powerful and well-received Spring 2016 show. I sat across the desk from him as he calmly explained how he was processing the multiple realities of addressing women—and the processes of commerce today. He was asking rhetorical questions, not complaining, not judging, but trying to come up with creative answers to the challenges thrown up by the Internet-accelerated speed of fashion, the shift in expectations on a designer not to be a developer and “maker” but a “creative director,” and the need to make dresses that look great on a red carpet.

Alber was also concerned—and show me the designer who is, these days—about how real women might be able to translate skimpy, semi-naked “event” dresses for themselves. “Come in, Olga,” he said, beckoning to a model who was standing in his doorway. Olga was wearing a nude corseted bodysuit over which was draped an emerald green satin “event” gown. Olga looked me in the eye. She knew how good it was. As a genius construct. As a witty comment. As something considerately meant.

lanvin spring 2008

Expand

Three takes on the goddess silhouette from Spring 2008

Photo: Marcio Madeira

The Lanvin Spring show—Alber’s unexpected last—covered this entire waterfront (or is it a cliff’s edge?) with a vast lineup of proposals from severe black and white tailoring, to faux-sexy eveningwear, to brilliantly louche glittery sequins and sarcastically funny Lanvin-logo prints of shoes and bags. Drawing back a bit, I think it was his attempt to square all the circles of the commercial needs of a globally selling company while still being himself, a man who, above all, tries to empathize with what women want. Though, apparently, even that wasn’t enough to keep his bosses happy.

lanvin spring 2003

Expand

Skimming back through Alber’s Lanvin collections, I am struck by how much he has innovated, how much he owned, and how relevant his clothes still are through time. If you were lucky enough to have bought something from one of his early collections, you were the first to have gotten your hands on dresses with tulle jewels suspended in the neckline, the first to have invested in his fluid one-shouldered goddess dresses, the first to appreciate the pretty-fierce eroticism he invented with his ribbon-implanted zippers. And through practice—if you are like me—you’ll now realize that you’ll probably be wearing them, on and off, for the rest of your life.

When all’s said and done, that timeless hot-yet-elegant relevance is Alber Elbaz’s permanent calling card. Should anyone be approaching him with a job proposal right now, they’d be lucky to get him. And for all of us who have Lanvin in our wardrobes, let it be known: We want more. But only if whoever snaps up Alber next takes care to make him happy.

Alber Elbaz talks creativity, street fashion, and more:

A brutal conspiracy threatens humanity's survival.  Three hundred years ago, the Earth died, and the last humans fled. Beaten. Broken in more ways than one. But there was something they couldn't leave behind: The Legacy Code—mangled genes that force them to abort half their unborn children.  When Era and Dritan Corinth get placements on the safest ship in the fleet and win a chance to have a child, they feel lucky. Until the day Era's supposed to find out if her baby has the Defect, and the ship suffers a hull breach. An investigation uncovers new threats: Dangerous secrets. Lies. Treason. Era begins to question everything she’s been taught about the fleet, their search for a new Earth, and the Defect. But the answers she seeks were never meant to be found…  Legacy Code is a suspenseful and dark genetic engineering science fiction series that has earned five star reviews from fans of some of the best sci-fi and fantasy books like Hunger Games, Divergent, and Red Rising, and has been compared favorably to Wool, 1984, and the new Battlestar Galactica.  "Addictive sci-fi series. I haven't been this hooked on an author since Anne McCaffery's Killashandra series." ~ Marie Hall, New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author  What Readers are Saying:  “Space, spaceships, planets, wormholes, dystopian, pregnancy, oh my! I thoroughly enjoyed Legacy Code. It was a quick read for me, as I found it hard to put down. After the first few chapters I was hooked & couldn't get enough… A great mix of SciFi & Dystopian! One of my top favourite reads for 2014.”

Melissa Rivers Says Kathy Griffin ‘Sh-t All Over’ Joan Rivers’ Legacy

Melissa Rivers has been making the publicity rounds this week, promoting her new book, “The Book of Joan,” and in an interview with the “Today” show’s Hoda Kotb at the 92nd Street Y in New York, Rivers spoke about Kathy Griffin’s departure from “Fashion Police.”

“My biggest complaint was the feeling that she kind of shit all over my mother’s legacy in her statement on leaving,” Rivers said. “And I know that that was not an intentional reading of it, but that’s how I felt …That was my takeaway, by [her] calling the comedy and the style of it old-fashioned. It’s like, I understand what you’re doing, you’re trying to save yourself, but don’t crap all over my mother to do it.”

Griffin had joined the show after Joan Rivers died, but left in March after just seven episodes. At the time, she tweeted, “I have discovered my style does not fit with the creative direction of the show and now it’s time to move on.” Rivers serves as one of the show’s executive producers.

The comedian’s exit followed that of Kelly Osbourne, who left “Fashion Police” after co-host Giuliana Rancic was slammed for her offensive comments about Zendaya’s dreadlocks during an Oscars-related telecast.

During her interview with Kotb, Rivers said she took Griffin’s comments very personally. “But as a professional, that was her choice, that’s what she did. No harm, no foul, moving on.” When asked about what Rancic said in regards to Zendaya’s hair, Rivers responded, “If something like that had happened and my mother had been alive, her reaction immediately would have been, ‘Oh, please, all this over a wig?’ Literally, it was a wig! Let’s just all relax.”

Grateful for My Mom’s Legacy this Mother’s Day

As both a mom and a daughter whose mother has passed away, Mother’s Day is always a bittersweet time for me. While I enjoy being celebrated by my son and husband, I miss my mother dearly. Each day of my life her legacy and influence live on through my parenting, family traditions, cooking, education and style. So many of our viewers reach out to me asking about the necklaces I wear on my show. What they might not know is that my mother is the inspiration behind the statement necklaces I wear each day.

I have to wear a robe, but I still like to be a jazzy judge! I inherited my love of jewelry and interesting statement necklaces from my mom. My late mother was very stylish in an understated, classy way, but she loved wearing beautiful, interesting neckpieces. A bold necklace is a great way to create a stylish focal point for any kind of outfit.

I carry on my mother’s flair for fashion by wearing some of her pieces and designing almost all of the others. And, almost every piece I have worn on the show is a one-of-a-kind creation. For me, the necklaces hold a special meaning and are more than just a fashionable piece of jewelry. My necklaces not only remind me of my mother, they are a symbol and reflection of the colorful, bold, unique woman she raised me to be. All of the words of encouragement and affirmation concerning my necklaces has inspired me to create a line of necklaces and other statement pieces.

I hope you enjoy your Mother’s Day! I’d love to hear how you celebrate your mom or keep her legacy alive limitlessly.

Leaving a Legacy Through Personal Style

She moved with purpose and joy. She was the ultimate hostess, welcoming everyone into a perfectly decorated home. At 10 years of age, I had never seen such beautiful china, mesmerizing paintings or heard music in a living room from a baby grand piano. Mrs. L.T. Burns of Wichita Falls, Texas, was a legend during my childhood, and I was in her home.

In 1954, the Burns began to place lights and displays on their lawn at Christmas. Every year it grew grander and lines became longer. Some years, she would join Santa in welcoming the crowds and handing out candy canes to the children. My memories include her smiles and lovely coats, coveted by my mother every year of her life. One year, my church choir was caroling in front of the house when unexpectedly, Mrs. Burns invited us in for cookies. I soaked in each decoration, each kind word spoken and the music playing accompaniment as the queen of our town greeted every person in the room. Her Christmas legacy was eventually donated to the local college, Midwestern University, and is called the “MSU-Burns Fantasy of Lights,” where her memory lives on each holiday season.

Mrs. Burns’ left behind an impeccable personal style noted by joy, compassion and generosity. So many women balk at the phrase “personal style.” Most often they are only thinking of models in Vogue rather than the legacy left behind, but our style has everything to do with that legacy. In The Power of Style by Annette Tapert and Diana Edkins (Copyright 1994), 10 women are profiled for “transforming their existence into a living work of art.” They selected women who lived with discipline, a sense of humor, resourcefulness, originality, verve, fearlessness and intelligence. Women who left powerful legacies to inspire us all.

The authors remind readers it is less important to have money and more important to have purpose, for style so often is birthed from resilience over heritage. These are women who dress for every occasion — every time they leave the house — simply because they dress for themselves and no one else. They have an appreciation for the unexpected and how events work together. They do not fear what lies ahead.

I did not begin to care about my personal style until after 50. Now, how I will be remembered is something I consider. Each encounter, every day, is a part of my style. Each message I communicate with my dress, as well as my words, are a part of my style. Yet, it is important to note, style is just as much about our insides as what we wear and our home décor on the outside. An excitement for each day and decisions about how to impact others are components of style. The truth is we all have a style whether we like it or not. Perhaps, now is the time to consider what your current style looks like. If it transforms into a living work of art, what do the brush strokes say?

Stylist and television personality Stacy London writes in The Truth About Style , “Style is transformative.” I agree and know this to be true. At 50, I transformed from a depressed, dowdy, uninspired woman to a joyful, driven, diligent, purposeful one who hopes to leave a legacy of joy just as Mrs. Burns in Texas did. Maybe a 10-year-old girl is watching.

Please share with us… do you consider your style as part of your legacy?

John Singleton Drops Out Of The Tupac Biopic Because He Says People Weren’t Respectful Of Tupac’s Legacy

Tupac Shakur’s forthcoming biopic, “Tupac,” has experienced a slight shift as it was announced last week that “Devil In A Blue Dress” director Carl Franklin has been named to replace John Singleton as the film’s director.

According to Variety, the film’s spokesman, Greg Mielcarz, stated Singleton departed from the much-anticipated project -– after exiting in 2012 and returning in 2014 –- due to creative differences. Following the announcement the Academy Award-nominated director took to his Instagram accountto explain why he’s walking away from the developing film for the second time in three years.

Real talk! The reason I am not making this picture is because the people involved aren’t really respectful of the legacy of Tupac Amaru Shakur. I won’t say much if you want you can read my articles in Hollywood Reporter on authenticity in Black Storytelling … To Pac’s real fans just know I am still planning a movie on Tupac … It doesn’t matter what they do mines will be better… Tupac was much more than a hip hop artist … He was a black man guided by his passions … Of most importance was his love of black people and culture … Something the people involved in this movie know nothing about… Real talk! How you gonna make a movie about a man when you suing his mother to get the rights to tell his story?! They have no true love 4 Pac so this movie will not be made with love! And that’s why my ass isn’t involved ! If Tupac knew what was going on he’d ride on all these fools and take it to the streets… But I won’t do that … I’ll just make my own project. What Yall think about that?!!

A photo posted by JOHN SINGLETON (@realjohnsingleton) on

Singleton worked with the late rapper his 1993 film “Poetic Justice.” During a 2013 interview with Essence, which also commemorated the film’s 20th anniversary, Singleton recalled his fondest memories of Shakur, including his intentions to cast him for the lead role in 2001’s “Baby Boy” which was later fulfilled by actor Tyrese Gibson.

“People always idolize ‘Pac, but he was really just a brilliant yet confused young kid with a lot of fame,” he told Essence. “He had nothing to ground him, no father. He had no one to tell him ‘no’ or ‘just sit down.’ But when you did tell him something, he’d respect you. Right before he passed we just started talking again.”

“I saw him a week an a half before he went to Las Vegas and I told him I’m working on a new movie [Baby Boy, 2001] and I told him that this will be the movie that will get him an Oscar. He said, ‘Anything you want I’m there.’ He was going to be my Robert DeNiro. We were going to grow together. When you see Baby Boy now, his presence and soul are still in that movie.”

Casting for “Tupac” is set to begin in the coming months, with filming beginning later this year.

Gale Anne Hurd On The Legacy of Wilma Mankiller (Exclusive Video)

I’ve asked Gale Anne Hurd to share her thoughts on why the story of the first female Principal Chief of The Cherokee Nation is one for the history books.

You might think the first woman to become principal chief of the Cherokee Nation is unrelated to my Sci-fi productions, but the late Wilma Mankiller was a real-life Ellen Ripley or Sarah Connor, and like the women of “The Walking Dead” she was a survivor-warrior who stepped up to lead her people.

As I sat down to write about Wilma Mankiller and the importance of her legacy,  I thought: Where do I start?  On the leadership front?  How she brought a nation together when many of the men who preceded her had failed?  Or the equally important aspect of her heritage, and how American history has essentially scrubbed the original “Americans”  from our history books?  “Most people like to deal with us as though we were in a museum or a history book,” Chief Wilma Mankiller once said of Native American tribes. For Wilma, there is added insult to injury: despite being a woman head of state of a sovereign nation, elected in 1983 who served three unprecedented and productive terms in office, she is not even mentioned in most history books.  For these reasons and so many more, director/producer Valerie Red-Horse and I feel now is the time to document Wilma’s life story in a film.

Native American Roots and Their Impact

Mankiller has taken on a whole life of its own through community outreach and social media.  An aspect of a Kickstarter campaign I was not expecting is the almost familial feeling of a group banding together, most of whom you have never met. One such person is Rustie Ann Miller, a Cherokee woman who has taken to Twitter for hours on end in support of our documentary.  She has tweeted to everyone from Barack Obama to Blake Shelton in hopes of having her Chief and idol’s story told.  As she said through her Twitter email to me, “I’ve been up two days now but can’t stop gotta make this happen”. Rustie Ann explains the urgency of this documentary in great detail, “My heritage is very important to me.  I believe by Mankiller’s story being told, it would open the eyes of many and help others with closure. Our people have been through a lot, and people need to know [about] the true Native American culture. I believe by making the Mankiller documentary, all cultures would benefit from her great wisdom, leadership, and love for the world.”

As filmmakers, Valerie and I, like Rustie Ann, understand the power of cinema to document history and preserve it for future generations. A film can generate awareness even more widespread than an article or a museum exhibit.  As Wilma Mankiller’s story comes closer to being lost to time, we have decided to act now to ensure that her name is never forgotten.  Wilma’s legacy is even more relevant in today’s partisan political world and can serve as an inspiration for unity and humility in politics, to care first about people rather than power.

For those of you not familiar with Wilma, let’s go back in time.  Wilma Mankiller was born at the tail end of World War II in 1945, in a city at the foothills of the Ozark Mountains of Oklahoma. Her father was a full-blooded Cherokee, while her mother was Dutch-Irish who embraced Cherokee life. Growing up, Wilma experienced many of the hardships suffered by the Cherokee Tribe, including forced relocation to San Francisco by the U.S. government when she was 10 years old. She referred to the event as her own “Trail of Tears,” 100 years after the Indian Removal Act of 1830 that forced several tribes to abandon their ancestral lands in the southeast and force-marched them 2,200 miles to Oklahoma in the dead of winter.  Over 4,000 Cherokee died along the way.

In the Bay Area, Wilma witnessed activism that shaped her worldview and set her on the path to leadership. In 1969, she was involved in the occupation of Alcatraz Island with other Native American activists looking to reclaim the land that rightfully belonged to them. It is fitting that her surname, “Mankiller,” refers to a traditional Cherokee warrior rank. Indeed, Wilma found her calling as a soldier for human rights.  She was a role model to all Native women, as highlighted by director/producer Valerie Red-Horse: “Being a Cherokee woman, the opportunity to tell the inspiring story of Wilma Mankiller’s life and legacy is extraordinary. Wilma’s journey is empowering and fascinating, and her influence and reach were clearly widespread. I believe we as a society have much to learn from her ability to unite and grow communities and governments, setting differences aside. This is a big task for us as filmmakers as this is so much more than mere entertainment – the program will be utilized for education and empowerment as well.”

An excluisve clip from Mankiller

Before and during her tenure, Wilma Mankiller took on some of the most urgent challenges of our time: education, alternative energy and small business development. She revived the Sequoyah High School, created a hydro-electric dam and established federal small business development grants which engendered self-empowerment. She also brought running water to the communities of Bell, Okalhoma and she tripled tribal membership from 55,000 to 165,000. Like any leader, her administration was not without detractors nor  controversy, but even her political foes will agree that Mankiller led an exemplarily courageous and accomplished life. As Gloria Steinem said in her review of Mankiller’s book, A Chief and Her People: “As one woman’s journey, Mankiller opens the heart. As the history of a people, it informs the mind. Together, it teaches us that, as long as people like Wilma Mankiller carry the flame within them, centuries of ignorance and genocide can’t extinguish the human spirit.”

Upon Wilma’s passing in April 2010, President Obama declared: “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Wilma Mankiller today. As the Cherokee Nation’s first female chief, she transformed the Nation-to-Nation relationship between the Cherokee Nation and the Federal Government, and served as an inspiration to women in Indian Country and across America. A recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, she was recognized for her vision and commitment to a brighter future for all Americans. Her legacy will continue to encourage and motivate all who carry on her work. Michelle and I offer our condolences to Wilma’s family, especially her husband Charlie and two daughters, Gina and Felicia, as well as the Cherokee Nation and all those who knew her and were touched by her good works.”

Show me the money: a video primer on another kind of equality.

A number of people, including President Obama, have recognized the need to raise the profile of female leaders in this country. Women on 20s is a grassroots movement that seeks to replace Andrew Jackson on the $ 20 bill with a prominent woman from American history. The list of potential replacements is filled with worthy candidates – Sojourner Truth, Rachel Carson, Harriet Tubman – and Wilma Mankiller. The faces on U.S. bills haven’t changed since 1929, and honoring Wilma on the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in 2020, could not be more perfect. With President Jackson having forced the removal of the Cherokee from their ancestral lands despite a Supreme Court mandate ruling in the Tribe’s favor – putting Wilma on the $ 20 bill would be poetic justice at its finest.  As author Louise Erdrich stated in her New York Times opinion piece, “It would be poetically just for her to replace Jackson and I love the thought of her soft and majestic face on money. Not to mention the satisfying contrast of her ferocious name.”

Family & the Art of Filmmaking

We have brought together a filmmaking team that includes Wilma’s widower, Charlie Soap, her daughter, Gina Olaya, and producers Kristina Kiehl and Dawn Jackson. But we have been joined by hundreds who have pledged their support to our project on Kickstarter, where we are crowd-funding part of the film’s budget. We believe that crowdfunding is the ultimate way to honor a leader like Wilma, by bringing people together in a campaign, much like she did.  Gina Olaya, Wilma’s daughter, put it best: “Mom was one of a few Native leaders in the 80s and 90s who sacrificed everything to lead her people. She worked 16 hours a day, seven days a week, to fulfill their needs. Mom’s service to our tribe wasn’t to gain fame, or fortune, or even social status. She genuinely cared for the health and welfare of each and every citizen of the Cherokee Nation, regardless of political affiliation or socioeconomic status. She would meet with U.S. presidents, then come home to Oklahoma to prepare food and dance the night away at our ceremonial ground; a rare breed, in my opinion.”

This extended trailer will introduce you to the story of Wilma Mankiller – and you might also recognize a few familiar faces from a certain series on AMC…

Music giant Boulez turns 90 with legacy growing

French musician Pierre BoulezHailed as one of the greatest living composers, Pierre Boulez is earning worldwide praise as he approaches 90, even as he sometimes suffers in his native France from the idea that he is stern and dogmatic. Ahead of his birthday on March 26, the Philharmonie de Paris — the brand-new, ultra-modern concert hall that was conceived in no small part by Boulez — is seeking to dispel that notion with a new exhibition. "The cliche is that his music is severe and that he became a dictator, an ayatollah or even the fuhrer from the moment he moved to Germany," said Laurent Bayle, the director of the Philharmonie de Paris and disciple of Boulez. Boulez emerged as a forceful presence after World War II by championing serialism, a rigid version of Arnold Schoenberg's atonality that defied traditional classical conceptions of setting music in keys.

Leelah’s Legacy Needs Help: A Trans Woman’s Call to Arms for the Absolute Right to Exist in Serenity and Safety

This is not a culture war. It’s a physical and social war for survival, and we need reinforcements.

We may be reaching the transgender tipping point; however, following a tipping over comes the spill. The mix of silence and literally homicidal aggression that we’re seeing all over the country shows how incredibly far we still have to go. If the escalated violence that we’ve experienced since the suicide of young trans girl Leelah Alcorn is any indication, things are going to continue getting worse before they get systematically better for trans people.

You may or may not have heard of the suicide of Leelah Alcorn. I will repeat it for those who haven’t. If you’re trans and you know the story, please don’t feel obligated to transport yourself to Leelah’s darkest night yet again. If you are not trans, please read this story until you hurt as much as the community of trans women who never had the chance to be there for her and show her what true love, support, empathy, and celebration mean.

Shortly after midnight on the cold morning of December 28, 2014, 17-year-old trans girl Leelah Alcorn walked along Interstate 71 near her hometown of Kings Mills, Ohio. According to historical weather data, temperatures hovered around 30 degrees, and the skies were overcast. It was dark and cold, and Leelah was there because she had come to a final decision. She had written a heartrendingly eloquent suicide note on her account with the social-networking site Tumblr and set it to post automatically if she did not cancel it by a certain time. Further details of her time on the interstate are unknown and unnecessary, except for one final, soul-crushing fact:

Leelah stepped in front of a tractor-trailer and was killed.

In her suicide note, which has since gone massively viral (and has been deleted from Tumblr along with her account, which had become a shrine of sorts), Leelah recounts her previous three years spent realizing and coming to terms with who she was and the reactions of those around her. At age 14, after years of pain and confusion, she learned that transgender people exist. Her mother “reacted extremely negatively” to Leelah’s subsequent coming out and began sending her to Christian therapists who offered only pious condemnation. At 16 she was pulled out of public school, her laptop and phone taken from her, and she was kept away from social media — the 21st-century version of solitary confinement for a trans girl. It was a punishment for claiming the right to exist in accordance with her true identity, which evolved quickly into an actual death sentence.

Not long after losing her social contacts and her dream of becoming a fully realized and authentic version of herself, Leelah gave up hope forever.

How do we fight the injustice and alienation that are experienced to one degree or another by every trans person I know, especially trans youth?

Politics is not enough. This fact is demonstrable when, in the days since Leelah’s death, we see renewed efforts by those who would see more trans people dead:

  • TERFs, or trans-exclusionary radical feminists, a small but viciously aggressive, myopic, and repugnant group of extreme “feminists,” have weaponized their own personal wounds to declare trans women Public Enemy No. 1. They harass us continually, especially those of us who dare to stand up for ourselves in any form. They scour the Internet and rifle through personal and legal records in order to publicly release information and details of our lives, often with catastrophic consequences. This week they have upped their campaigns to include trolling the Trans Lifeline, a crisis hotline. According to Greta Martela, founder of the Trans Lifeline, “There has been a coordinated campaign of concern trolling. They are asking if we do background checks. It’s so that they might pivot and suggest that trans women are dangerous predators. For the record, we don’t do background checks, because it would be costly and triggering and generally negative for our volunteers due to issues with dead names.”
  • Young, white, racist, patriarchal self-styled computer hackers have also declared war on the Trans Lifeline.
  • On Sunday, January 4, two women were attacked verbally with homophobic and transphobic slurs on a bus in San Francisco. They were then followed off the bus, and one woman was stabbed. Despite the inherent problems with the prison-industrial complex and hate-crime legislation, the San Francisco Police Department took two days to follow their own laws and label the attack as qualifying for hate-crime charges. It bears repeating: This happened in San Francisco, a supposed haven for the LGBT community. It has never been more apparent that the “T” in “LGBT” is attached in name only.
  • A sister in my online community was lost to suicide just a few days ago. I’ve seen more trans women post notes and feelings of despair, including suicidal ideation, in the last two weeks than in the last two months.

What else will it take to sufficiently value trans people, especially trans youth?

Politics, trans visibility, and supportive campaigns are good and necessary, but they aren’t nearly enough. Isolated trans people like Leelah have, at times, access to the Internet and thus access to a virtual world full of other trans people who are experiencing challenges, successes, and failures similar to those that she encountered. For example, two Reddit posts have emerged (here and here), reported to have been left by Leelah, looking for advice on dealing with her situation. Access to an online community was not enough to sustain Leelah’s hope or sense of community. Even when her online presence was cut off by her parents, she must have realized that, if nothing else, her connection to distant support and information would eventually return — sooner rather than later, in the grand scheme of things — regardless of whatever else in her life was going to or not going to change.

There are a number of young trans people like Leelah — a number of trans people of all ages, in fact — who continue to experience profound alienation in the absence of people who are physically present and available with them. More than anything, they need people who are actively listening, understanding, and truly empathizing with their struggles.

My friend Andromeda, who is 22 years old and agender, wrote a post the other day that reflected these limitations of connectivity in an even more profound way than my own recent experiences (reprinted with permission; emphasis mine):

The people who stood up and shouted “it gets better” from rooftops were never the ones that inspired me to move on. It was always good but it wasn’t what sparked me thinking or what helped me when I was really down. The people who told me to “get over it,” or that my pain “was to be expected” or said “you’ll grow out of it” were never the ones I looked up to or respected. Hope and positivity are good, they’re great ways to combat the crushing nihilism that exists in the world but they leave you at arms length from kids who build up walls around the sort of empty rhetoric they grew up being fed by families, friends, and lovers who didn’t really give a shit about them. I steeled my heart a long time ago and it took a lot of work and love to open me up and I know I can’t be alone in that. And it’s hard day by day but it still hurts to think of where I would be without these people in my life. Let’s strive for honest and earnest dialogue that leaves us all as vulnerable as the people we’re trying to help because the only way we can move forward is together, and day by day.

This needs to end now. Those of us with the resources to fight in any way need to continue to stand up to those who are actively working to see more trans people dead, and we need to be absolutely present with those trans people who, at any given moment, may have fewer emotional or material resources than we do.

We need everyone to share this information. These stories are not just for trans women to read, share, rage about, and tremble along with in the darkness. These stories are for all those on the right side of history and of humanity who realize that gender variance has always existed across cultures and history. Far from being a threat, gender variance and the authentic lives of transgender people enrich culture and the human experience.

2015 must be the year that the systematic isolation, marginalization, and killing of trans people, whether through physical attack, psychological warfare, or systemic violence and oppression, are made explicitly, implicitly, legally, and socially unacceptable.

If you believe this is true, take a deep breath and dive in with us. We need you to listen to us, to fight with us, to amplify our messages, and to love and honor us and our right to simply be — now more than ever.

Have you ever thought of past struggles for civil rights and had your conscience speak to you in a silent wish that you could have lived during a particular time and fought on the right side of history? Dreamed of what an asset or force you could have been?

Here is your chance. Right here, right now.

What will you make of it?

'Love Never Felt So Good' Music Video Celebrates Michael Jackson's Legacy

'Love Never Felt So Good' Music Video Celebrates Michael Jackson's LegacyThe music video for "Love Never Felt So Good," Michael Jackson's single off his posthumous record "Xscape," is a total celebration of the late pop star's career. Justin Timberlake and a bunch of dancers do their best MJ impressions against old footage of Jackson dancing in some of his most memorable roles. The track debuted earlier this month at the iHeartRadio Music Awards and has received mixed criticism. Co-written with Paul Anka in 1983, the song is already featured in some Jeep commercials and landed on the Billboard Hot 100 after only three full days worth of tracking.
