Fashion to Fintech, OnApproval Makes Luxury Shopping Less Cryptic

From fashion to fintech, American fashion designer Alvin Valley partners with HauteLook cofounder Carlota Espinosa and Oracle-acquired InstantService.com founder Damion Hankejh to integrate OnApproval — the “first luxury payment service system” with Uphold in early January.
Having launched in 2015, Uphold serves more than 184 countries to deliver 30-plus currency types including traditional forms and cryptocurrency. Since its launch, it has powered more than $ 4 billion in U.S. transactions while offering “frictionless foreign exchange for merchants and members around the world.”
The partnership anticipates the formal launch of OnApproval, and it allows its members to “pull goods before paying — providing an in-store shopping experience at home” — by partnering as the alpha merchant with Uphold, the “Internet bank of money,” to onboard 1 million OnApproval members.
According to Hankejh, e-commerce is “ripe for remodeling.” In a separate interview with WWD, Espinosa offered that OnApproval “drives loyalty by reducing payment friction and eliminating the “shopping cart” paradigm, triggering in-store behavior in the home wrapped in personalized customer experience.”
Sometimes noted as the “king of pants” for his extensive design reign in the product category, Valley is in good company with his fellow cofounders of OnApproval. Espinosa is cofounder and vice president of the Nordstrom-acquired HauteLook and Hankejh is a chief

9 Things Introverts Can Do To Make Their Weddings Less Overwhelming

Weddings can be a stressful, overwhelming time for anyone, but particularly for brides and grooms who identify as introverts.

Why? Because typically, introverts aren’t comfortable being the center of attention. They try to avoid small talk and require quiet alone time to gain energy and recharge their batteries. This, of course, poses a big challenge during the wedding chaos: all eyes are on you, your second cousin twice removed is trying to chat your ear off and you’re surrounded by people. Constantly.

So we asked experts, wedding planners and brides to share their best tips on how introverts can stay cool, calm and collected throughout the planning process and especially on the big day. Take a deep breath and find out what they had to say below:

1. For starters, plan a wedding that suits your personality — it can be as low-key as you want it to be.

“Remember that the only thing that absolutely, positively must happen for a wedding to be successful is that you end up married at the end of the day,” Sophia Dembling, author of Introverts in Love: The Quiet Way to Happily Ever After, tells The Huffington Post. “So you can make your wedding anything you and your betrothed want: a quiet sunset ceremony on a beach or a small backyard family gathering. Even the frou-frou, attention-grabbing dress is optional. It’s your wedding, make it an event that will bring you true joy.”

2. Opt to do a “first look” before the ceremony.

“For introverted brides terrified of walking down the aisle, I recommend a first look with their partner before the ceremony,” wedding planner Tracie Domino of Tracie Domino Events says. “This private time between the two of you is incredibly sweet and allows you to experience seeing each other for the first time without all of your guests staring at you. Walking down the aisle will still be incredibly special, but you will feel like you are in it together this way.”

3. Schedule some “you” time on the big day, so you can take a breather (or two).

“Introverts need some quiet time away from social activities, so make sure to take breaks throughout the day,” self-proclaimed introvert and founder of Intimate Weddings Christina Friedrichsen tells HuffPost. “This could mean escaping to the powder room or to a quiet place in your reception area. Having some quiet one-on-one time with your sweetie during the big day can also help you recharge.”

“And don’t feel bad about doing this,” Dembling says. “If you take little breaks, you’ll be able to keep going longer, without getting cranky.”

4. It may sound like just one more thing on your already busy schedule, but consider planning a casual pre-wedding get-together with family and friends.

“This will sound counter-intuitive, but try to organize an event or informal gathering the day before the wedding so that you can see as many people as possible in advance,” Fusion anchor and recent bride Alicia Menendez says. “People are there to see and celebrate you and your partner, and if you maximize their opportunities to do that, it actually lowers the pressure on the big day.”

5. Consider having a smaller bridal party.

“Big bridal parties often lead to bigger problems,” Domino says. “From trying to find a dress that will fit everyone to one of your girls complaining that her hair appointment is too early, the less opinions the introverted bride has to deal with the better.”

“Keep your getting-ready squad as small as possible,” Menendez adds. “You’ll want and need that calm, quiet time before things really kick off.”

6. Limit the amount of input you’re getting from well-meaning friends and family — you’re the decision maker here!

“If you involve mom and grandma and Aunt Jane and his mom and grandma and Aunt Jane too, while also getting ideas from friends and coworkers, you’ll be begging for head space before you know it,” Dr. Laurie Helgoe, psychologist and author of Introvert Power, says. “Introverts are good at listening and really thinking about what others say. When the ‘others’  become too many, there’s no room left for your own thoughts. Be selective.”

7. Skip the sweetheart table at the reception.

“Introverted brides tend to love the idea of a feasting table — where the bride and groom sit with the bridal party and their dates,” Domino recommends. “With this option, the bride and groom don’t feel as much like they are onstage and more like they are having a dinner party within the wedding reception with their closest friends.”

8. If you’re marrying an extrovert, let your partner do the talking.

“If your spouse-to-be is less introverted than you, let him or her take on more of a social role in the wedding,” Friedrichsen suggests. “This might mean he is the one that makes small talk with guests and thanks everyone for coming out. Also, your wedding attendants are great allies for fielding requests, making introductions and organizing people, which are all things introverts generally find difficult. A day-of coordinator or wedding planner can also help you deal with vendors, so you don’t have to.”

9. Make sure you have plenty of time to chill before and after the wedding.

“Make a point of giving yourself at least a day of serious downtime before everything gets going so you can store up some energy,” Dembling says. “Then, if you don’t head out for your honeymoon right away, take another day or two after the last guest heads home to regroup and rest up. If you do leave for your honeymoon right away, try to schedule a few quiet days at the beginning to rest up before any sightseeing or other action.”

Remember: This may be the only time in your life that you will be surrounded by this many friends and family on both sides.

“Don’t fight it,” Dembling says. “Try to soak in the goodness of it. If anything is worth the effort, this is it. You can rest later.”

And who knows, it may turn out to be much easier and much more wonderful than you ever anticipated.

“Here’s what I was not expecting,” Menendez says. “At some point, gratitude takes over and you are genuinely happy to be surrounded by so many people who you love and who love you.”

Choosing a President in Three Words or Less

Before the next Republican presidential debate, I suggest the sponsors hop a plane to London and share a beer with Matthew Kempton.

In late 2014, the 34-year-old app developer, together with his partners James Mitchell and Tom Ollerton, created 3UP, a mobile messaging app that limited communication to three words. The concept made even 140-character tweets seem cumbersome.

The app never caught on; Kempton jokes that about 30 of his friends downloaded it, sending messages like “Hung over today!” and “Meet next week?” Today it can only be purchased in the UK’s App Store. Still, Kempton believes three word communication has merit, seeing that he and his partners spent several weeks using ONLY the app to communicate.

“We cut out a lot of the unnecessary crap,” he said. “Then, when we finally did meet up (in person), we found we really wanted to listen to each other.”

What a concept!

Like 24 million other Americans, I watched 10 candidates stand in a Cleveland sports arena earlier this month and listened to them blather on incessantly about how they would fix America. Frequently, they exceeded their one-minute allotted times, often veering farther off course than a Tiger Woods tee shot. Seriously, Governor Kasich, what does job growth in Ohio have to do with illegal immigration?

This is why I’m proposing the 3UP concept be applied to all future GOP debates, nine of which are tentatively scheduled. There should be three-word questions followed by, at most, three word answers. Only after the primaries are completed and a candidate chosen, can he or she share viewpoints in greater detail. In fact, let’s start with a do over of the Cleveland beauty pageant, er, debate. Same Fox News moderators, same candidates, same day of the week. The debate would last, at most, 15 minutes, meaning Fox wouldn’t have to preempt its stellar lineup of primetime Thursday shows like boom!, a “fun-filled, trivia-charged, slime-soaked, entertainment blast” according to the Fox website. Megyn Kelly, please begin.

“Welcome candidates to the ‘Less is More’ debate. I’m Megyn Kelly along with Bret Baier and Chris Wallace. Gentlemen, you know the rules. Of course, the three-word format means I can’t ask my first question, ‘Why isn’t the camera on me more often?’ Mr. Trump, first question to you. View of women?”

“I love ’em!”

“All of them?”

“Except Rosie O’Donnell.”

“Pardon me, Megyn, but that was a four-word answer.”

“O’Donnell is one word, Mr. Huckabee. Not two. Bret, your question.”

“Thanks Megyn. Dr. Carson, who are you?”

“I’m a neurosurgeon.”

“Any political experience?”

“None whatsoever.”

“Care to rephrase? You’re entitled to an extra word.”

“None. Vote me!”

“Thank you. Chris, your question.”

“Senator Rubio, thoughts on immigration?”

“Build a fence.”

“If illegals tunnel?”

“Guard the tunnel!”

“Send rapists home!”

“Thank you, Mr. Trump, but that question was for Senator Rubio. We’ll hear from you later, time permitting. The next question goes to Governor Christie. Collect phone records?”

“Yeah, do it!”

“Only from terrorists.”

“That’s ridiculous, Rand.”

“You’re ridiculous, Chris.”

“Put ’em up!”

“Gentlemen, calm down. But thank you both for threatening each other within the rules. As you know, we were going to take questions from Facebooks users, but not a single user submitted a three word question. That’s not surprising considering nobody is ever brief and concise when using Facebook. So, I’ll ask the next question. Governor Walker, still pro-life?”

“Always pro-life.”

“With no exceptions?”

“Never considered any.”

“Is that reasonable?”

“Sure. Why not?”

“Thank you, Governor. Bret, you’re up.”

“Thanks, Megyn. Jeb Bush, let’s discuss jobs. Create how many?”

“Nineteen million.”

“That’s NEW jobs?”

“Give or take.”

“What percent growth?”

“Four sounds good.”

“So, just to reiterate to the viewing audience, Jeb Bush has promised 19 million new jobs and four percent economic growth. That’s correct, sir?”

“Sounds about right.”

“Thank you. Megyn, you get the final question.”

“Thanks, Brett. I’ll make it brief. Mr. Trump, Republican or Democrat?”

“I’ve supported both.”

“Which are you?”

“Not nice Megyn.”

“Answer the question.”

“I smell blood.”

“And we’re done. On behalf of my colleagues, I’m Megyn Kelly. To view the top six seconds of this debate, please download the Vine app.”

News in Brief: Winning Argument With Aging Parents Less Satisfying Than It Once Was

CINCINNATI—After firmly telling them that she was okay paying city prices and that she would not move back to her hometown just because it was cheaper, local woman Ellen Wallace, 40, confirmed Thursday that winning an argument with her parents has become much less satisfying as they have gotten older. “We used to get into these half-hour-long ordeals where we’d both get pretty worked up, but now they seem to run out of energy pretty quickly and just stop talking if I go on for more than a few minutes,” said Wallace, who explained that she used to relish those times when she could get her parents to give some ground on a disagreement, but that their advancing age had left them unwilling, or unable, to put up much more than a meager challenge that she could easily shout down. “They gave me a little pushback just now …

News in Brief: Less Popular Friend Proposes Combining Birthdays Into Single Party

LOUISVILLE, KY—Saying it would be fun to have everyone together in the same place, local man David Coughlin reportedly proposed combining his birthday party with that of his far more popular friend, sources confirmed Tuesday. “I know my birthday’s a couple weeks after yours, but maybe it’d be cool if we just threw one huge bash together,” said Coughlin, who, without assistance from his more gregarious friend Ryan Whatley, would only have been able to scrape together a mere handful of acquaintances for a celebration dedicated solely to himself. “I feel like our guest lists probably overlap a ton, so people won’t have to worry about making it out to two separate parties. Besides, if we pool our money together, maybe we could even rent out a bar or something.” At press time, Coughlin was enthusiastically proposing that they even make the combined party kind of …

7 Small Things That Can Make Divorce A Little Less Stressful

Nothing prepares you for the emotional and financial drain of divorce. No matter how amicable you and your ex are determined to be, there are bound to be headaches and heartache during and after the divorce process, especially if you share kids.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t small steps you can take to make divorce and co-parenting a little less stressful. To that end, we recently asked HuffPost Divorce readers and bloggers to share how they solved some of the weightiest problems they faced during or after divorce. From communicating with exes solely through email (at least initially), to taking their kids to play therapy, read what’s working in their divorces below.

1. Stay in contact with your ex via email.
You don’t necessarily want to talk to your ex when the emotions are still raw after a divorce. But if you have kids, there’s no way around it. To keep the lines of communication open without having to pick up the phone, author Monique Honaman said she communicated with her ex through weekly H.E.A.R. emails — meaning, they only discussed the kids’ health, education, activities and reinforcement of discipline.

“We might say something to the effect of, ‘Johnny had a fever on Monday and stayed home from school. He’s fine now. He got an A on his English papers, but might need extra help in math. Soccer registration is opening soon. Will send over the registration fee. We need to jointly reinforce his positive behavior toward his sister at the dinner table,'” she explained. “These emails really made things easier!”

2. Make every effort to give your kids the outside support they need.
A parents’ divorce is a difficult, scary thing to comprehend; when you’re only 4 years old, it’s nearly impossible to understand. Out of concern for how her 4-year-old daughter would react to watching her parents divorce, writer and comedian Laura Lifshitz broached the subject of play therapy with her estranged husband.

“She’s very smart and picks up on every little thing we do and say but she doesn’t really understand why she can’t have us all together. It’s been very hard for her and even a year later she says she wants us all together,” Lifshitz said. “Play therapy is a wonderful outlet and safe space for her to work through her emotions and the therapist even works with us to make good choices as co-parents. It’s the best choice we made.”

3. Keep records of everything.
One of the most frequent recommendations you’ll hear from divorce attorneys is to record everything during divorce. Developer and single dad Jon Vaughan’s problem? He hadn’t recorded anything. That ill-fated decision led him to create GenesisCCM, a free child custody manager for divorced parents that allows them to keep better records of shared expenses and visitation using any mobile device with Internet access.

“At the time, the only program I could find that was similar was a desktop-based system that cost quite a bit of money,” Vaughan said. “As a parent, you need to be prepared to protect the relationship you want with your kids after divorce — I hope Genesis helps more parents do that.”

4. Give mediation a chance.
Having to go to court every time you and your ex have a disagreement over something can be costly. To side step a court visit after a recent squabble with her ex, journalist Emma Johnson said they explored something new.

“My ex’s therapist reached out and invited me to join in a session with the two of them,” Johnson said. “I know her and trusted she would be a good mediator — and she was. I look forward to resolving future conflicts this way.”

5. Change your ex’s name in your cellphone to “co-parent.”
In the grand scheme of your divorce, changing your ex’s name to “co-parent” may seem a little inconsequential. But the visual reminder that your relationship is solely about the kids might make for more productive conversations, divorced mom Lisa Dubino advised.

“I picked up this tip from a recently divorced friend and it just makes so much sense,” Dubino said. “Once I changed his name, it became all about the children. There was a complete shift in the dynamic of the relationship. Our weekly meetings became less emotional, the tone changed and the focus was clear. It was the best thing I did and didn’t cost any money, time or grief.”

6. Clear out the stuff in your house that reminds you of your ex.
Chances are, there are leftover items in your house that do nothing but remind you of bad times during your marriage. For writer Katherine Forsythe, those items were outfits she wore to special occasions with her ex-husband. The clothes remained in her closet until a good friend came over and told her to toss them out.

“As I cast off my old outfits — like a black dress from his mother’s birthday party — I literally felt lighter,” she said. “My joie de vivre bubbled up again. Space for the new me opened up. The trick is to be tough on yourself and de-clutter your closet with an honest friend who will say, ‘Let it go. It’s ugly and only reminds you of him!'”

7. Say “thank you” as much as possible.
Try to remember that you and your ex are a team. (If he or she is in a committed relationship, you’ve got a few more team members.) As blogger Shelley Wetton has learned, a simple thank you can go a long way in fostering a strong co-parenting relationship.

“In my case, I admit my son’s stepmom does the heavy-lifting, like school pick-ups and drop-offs at sports,” Wetton said. “Because of that, I make sure to thank her profusely and give her little gifts to remind her how much her love and attention for our son means to me and our whole blended family.”

Gavin McInnes, Fox News Guest, Says Women Are ‘Less Ambitious’ And ‘Happier At Home’

A Fox News guest declared that the gender pay gap exists because women are “less ambitious” than men and that most would be happier staying at home with children.

Gavin McInnes, a writer and co-founder of Vice Media, made the inflammatory comments Thursday evening while on “Hannity” along with attorney and Fox News analyst Tamara Holder.

“Women do earn less in American because they choose to,” he said. “They would rather go to their daughter’s piano recital than stay all night at work, working on a proposal, so they end up earning less. They’re less ambitious.”

“What?” replied an incredulous Holder.

“This is sort of God’s way — this is nature’s way — of saying women should be at home with the kids,” he said. “They’re happier there.”

Holder called the comments deplorable, but that didn’t stop McInnes from pressing on.

“If you were a real feminist you would support housewives and see them as the heroes and women who work wasting their time,” he told her.

“Why am I sitting here?” Holder asked at one point.

“You’re making a mistake,” he responded. “You would be much happier at home with a husband and children.”

Even host Sean Hannity did a face palm at that comment. “Oh boy,” he said, laughing.

“Sean, this isn’t funny,” Holder said.

McInnes has a history of making misogynistic comments. Earlier this year, he said on “Hannity” that women shouldn’t go on spring break because they “aren’t as strong as men — they can’t even hold their booze as well as men.”

And in 2013, he said on HuffPost Live that feminism has made women less happy, and being in the work place has made them miserable.

“Women are forced to pretend to be men. They’re feigning this toughness,” he said. “They’re miserable. Study after study has shown that feminism has made women less happy. They’re not happy in the work force, for the most part.”

Pop-Up Shop Will Charge Women Less To Reflect State’s Wage Gap

A pop-up shop for gender wage equality could be coming to a city near you.

Created by graphic designer Elana Schlenker, the store called 76<100 was created to build awareness around the gender wage gap in Pennsylvania. The shop kicked off its grand opening on April 14 (Equal Pay Day) in Pittsburgh. The name 76<100 reflects the pay gap in Pennsylvania, where women make 76 cents to every man’s dollar. The store charges its male customers 100 percent of the retail price of items and charges female customers 76 percent of this price.

“The pricing structure is intended to be tongue-in-cheek, to grab the community’s attention and then foster dialogue around the issue,” Schlenker told The Huffington Post.

The store features products and goods made all by women, including books, stationary, ceramics and textiles. “I’ve read article after article about the wage gap and the ways in which women are perceived (and undervalued) in the workplace,” Schlenker said. “And when I had the idea to do a shop with this ‘pay what you’re paid’ pricing, I felt like it could be a really powerful, positive and fun way to approach this issue and also connect with other women whose work I admire.”

Schlenker plans to travel across the U.S. with 76<100 to promote awareness around specific states' wage gaps. Her next stop is New Orleans, Louisiana, where women are paid on average 66 cents to every man’s dollar. The store will be appropriately named 66<100 and, fittingly, women will only be charged 66 percent of the retail price. “More than anything that is what I hope for — to get people talking about the wage gap and these other women’s issues, and to understand that remedying this isn’t about discriminating against men, or even passing legislation necessarily,” Schlenker said. “There are a lot of more deeply seeded issues and biases in our society that are perpetuating this problem. Recognizing this, while encouraging women to ask for what they’re worth is, is one small step toward positive change.”

76<100 is not for profit and all of the income made from the store will go directly to the female artists and designers whose products are featured in the store. “Wage equality also incorporates many different issues for women and men — women’s self-worth, perceptions of women in the workplace, parental leave policies, racial issues, education, minimum wage — it’s not just about earning what men earn,” she said. An awesome bargain and fighting the wage gap? We’ll take that deal any day.

Head over to 76<100's website to read more about the store.

New Report Shows Black Males Live 5 Years Less Than White Males

Although half of the country is focused on the incessant killing of unarmed Black men at the hands of police officers, a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is showing that African-Americans, particularly males, have bigger fears in their life span.

Via MSN:

The average African-American male lives five years less than the average white American male.

Health is also far from post-racial. While America has made progress on this front, including through the Affordable Care Act, many gaps persist between blacks and whites.

Issues in health and health care that lead to a shorter life span for black Americans start before birth. The average black baby enters the world under different circumstances than the average white baby, and the gap only grows between birth and death.

In 2012, about 13 percent of babies born to black mothers had low birth weights (less than 2,500 grams), compared with 7 percent of babies born to white mothers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The lag of health awareness at an early age also leads to cancer striking more fiercely, such as the case of ESPN great Stuart Scott, who recently succumbed to the disease at the young age of 49.

Cancer-related deaths also account for part of the life-expectancy gap between blacks and whites – accounting for 0.634 years’ worth of lost life expectancy for blacks. In terms of years lost before age 75, black Americans lose nearly 1,796.7 years per 100,000 members of the population due to cancer deaths, while white Americans lose 1,420 years. Although genetics may be somewhat responsible for such differences, socio-economic factors such as diet, lifestyle and a lack of preventive care are far greater contributors. Of the U.S.’ racial and ethnic groups, black Americans have the highest cancer-related death rates and the shortest survival for most cancers, according to the American Cancer Society.

The most common cancers for black men in the U.S. are prostate, lung, and colon and rectal cancer; for women, they are breast, lung and colorectal cancer. The gaps in preventive care have narrowed in the last decade for procedures that lead to early cancer diagnosis, and more Americans overall undergo these procedures and tests. While in 2000, only 20 percent of white Americans and 18 percent of black Americans ages 50 to 75 had colonoscopies, by 2010, 57 percent of white Americans did and 52 percent of black Americans did. Black and white women have mammograms at about the same rate.

Even something as commonplace as breastfeeding and/or “freeing the nipple” plays a huge factor.

Along the parenting track, breast-feeding has lifelong health benefits for babies, including a reduced risk for hospitalization for lower-respiratory tract diseases in the first year and lower chances for asthma, childhood obesity, Type 2 diabetes and sudden infant death syndrome. For the mother, breast-feeding decreases her risk for breast and ovarian cancer. Despite these and other benefits, black babies are breast-fed at about half the rate as white babies.

Much of that difference can be attributed to less education about the benefits of breast-feeding and fewer options in the workplace for breast-feeding. Prenatal visits present ample opportunities to discuss breast-feeding, but black women are less likely to receive prenatal care. Younger mothers are also less likely to receive prenatal care. Lack of access – meaning a response of, “I couldn’t get an appointment earlier in my pregnancy” – was the most common reason for mothers not getting prenatal care, followed by “I didn’t know I was pregnant” and “I didn’t have enough money or insurance to pay for my visits,” according to a 2003 survey funded by the CDC.

Next time someone responds to the question of how long do black males live with police brutality statistics, be sure to tell them while Black Lives do indeed Matter, Homicides are only responsible for 0.5 years of lost life compared to the 2,126.7 years lost from cancer and HIV combined.
