The Wing Releases ‘Big Little Lies’ Product Collaboration

Women’s coworking space The Wing is adding a product component to its partnership with HBO, marking the network’s “Big Little Lies” season two release.
The company has collaborated with three female-led companies on accessories and clothing inspired by the show’s “backdrop of the ocean, the theme of healing through exercise and the unbreakable friendship or ‘circle of trust’ that the women (in the show) form with one another,” according to a statement.
Outdoor Voices’ exercise gear, priced at $ 45 to $ 85; Lizzie Fortunato earrings for $ 150, and a Cuyana belt bag for $ 140 comprise the capsule collection, which will be exclusively available for purchase at The Wing’s SoHo and West Hollywood locations as well as through its e-commerce site. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the National Network to End Domestic Violence.
“When I started Outdoor Voices, the activewear market was dominated by men and I wasn’t taken seriously at first. It seemed crazy to me that there were no women creating product for women — we’re the ones who know the ins and outs of boob, butt and bounce-management firsthand. Today, I’m happy to say that we…have created an activewear brand that emphasizes freeing fitness from performance and moving for

Her Dream Didn’t Include Falling in Love Lily has a dream, a dream of a big house without lies, a place of refuge for runaway girls. She knows what it’s like to grow up feeling unloved, and she now fills every space in her tiny apartment with endangered teens. They don’t have everything they need, but together they have enough.  Or so she thinks—until she meets Jameson and glimpses the mysterious something between them that just might mean real love.  Jameson, who works as a teen counselor, believes the only way Lily can really help the girls is by certifying as a foster parent and going through the system. But becoming legitimate may mean losing some of the girls to the families who threw them away, and Lily hasn’t worked hard to save the teens only to abandon them now.  It seems Jameson will be one more entry on the very long list of things Lily has given up for the girls. What other choice is there when she is all they have?  When two of the teens’ fathers come looking for them, and another one’s mother plans to put her daughter in danger, Lily’s life spins out of control. They need a new home—and fast. A safe place. A house without lies.  Editorial note: House Without Lies is a clean, contemporary romance with a satisfying ending (no cliffhanger). There are currently two sequels that tell the stories of other characters connected with Lily’s House: Tell Me No Lies and Your Eyes Don’t Lie. Another novel and several novellas are in the works.

Our love is on his terms. He contacts me only through notes − unpredictable and untraceable. When we meet, he can touch me, but I’m not allowed to touch him. When we make love, it’s only after I have been bound and blindfolded. It’s the only time I truly feel alive. Which is why I play along with it. For now. Caden Thaine is the most sinfully beautiful man I have ever seen. But more than that, his touch sets me on fire. And dear God, do I ache for him. I don’t know where he lives or even what he does. But this doesn’t scare me. My only fear is that one day his messages will stop. I know he’s hiding something. But that’s okay. I am hiding things, too. Like my real name and… who I really am. But what we have is enough. Sort of. And everything works… Until one day, I follow him. Soon our dark pasts will collide and I will discover just how much we are both bound by lies. Where Do the Lies About LGBTIs in Africa Come From?

Shocking legislative developments have focused Western media attention on the gay rights situation across Africa like never before. Many of the column inches dedicated to Uganda’s Anti Homosexuality Act have demonstrated an awareness of the complexity of the social and political landscape for African LGBTIs. The colonial provenance of the penal code provisions which outlaw same-sex intercourse has been explored. The claims that “homosexuality is unAfrican” have been shown to be false, thanks to a wealth of anthropological evidence to the contrary. The incoherence of using a religion imposed on Africa by proselytising European missionaries to decry same-sex attraction as unAfrican has not gone unnoticed. In short: on the issue of LGBTI rights in Africa, analysis has (largely) been surprisingly nuanced.

What is generally lacking from Western media, however, is an understanding of some of the most pernicious lies about LGBTIs in Africa — and relatively few people have asked the question, ‘where do the lies come from?’

One such lie is the idea that declaring you’re gay, or even pro-gay, opens up the floodgates to foreign money. African LGBTIs are therefore not really gay; they’re just in it for the money. And in a country like Uganda, where the GDP per capita in 2013 stood at just $ 572 USD, the (fictitious) idea that decadent, wealthy Westerners are using poverty to coerce Ugandans incites a nationalistic defensiveness, galvanising public opinion against LGBTIs and their supporters. “The team of homosexuals is very rich,” Ugandan former Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi was reported to have said. “They have money and they will do whatever it takes to make sure this vice penetrates Africa…[they want to] lure people into their club.” Indeed, the idea that LGBTI is synonymous with money is so embedded that Ugandan legal scholar, Professor Sylvia Tamale, recently told an audience at the London School of Economics that after she spoke out against the treatment of LGBTIs in her country, she received a text message from a friend, congratulating her on becoming a millionaire.

The trope of the wealthy gay man using his financial clout for nefarious purposes did not originate in Africa, however. In the early 1990s, voters in the US state of Colorado narrowly approved an amendment to the state constitution prohibiting the recognition of LGBTIs as a protected class — effectively making discrimination against LGBTIs legal. Opponents of LGBTIs, such as the Colorado Coalition for Family Values, propagated the notion that “homosexuals” were not a persecuted minority, but were in fact politically powerful, incredibly wealthy and enjoyed enormous influence on American cultural life. As scholar Mariana Valverde points out, “[t]he similarity between these beliefs and…anti-Semitic propaganda about Jews…is striking.”

The migration of the trope from North America to Africa can be explained through the influence of US neoconservative organisations, such as the Institute on Religion and Democracy (IRD). According to a report by the think-tank Political Research Associates, the IRD is “one of the main organizations promoting homophobia in both Africa and the United States over the last decade.” The report claims that while mainstream Episcopal church funding in Africa is directed towards visible projects — and therefore requires accountability on how money is spent — “conservative funding pays the salaries of archbishops and their staffs,” concluding that “archbishops’ offices have become mouthpieces of U.S. conservatives.”

The threatening spectre of the ‘gay agenda’ is further sustained in the African context as it allows governing authorities to exploit frustration at socio-economic conditions by redirecting public anger at a common enemy — the mythical, wealthy, privileged, powerful ‘homosexual’. Western donors unwittingly played into this trope when they threatened to pull development aid in response to poor treatment of African LGBTIs. The former Minister of Ethics and Integrity in Uganda, James Nsaba Buturo, commented: “I have been pressured by some donors to allow homosexuality, but I have told them they can keep their money and the homosexuality because it is not about charity at the expense of our moral destruction.”

While the situation for LGBTIs across Africa is far from uniformly pessimistic, any judicial victories will be diluted by the extreme social hostility fomented by these toxic beliefs and by the American religious fundamentalists who sustain them. What is needed is a brighter spotlight shone on the role that foreigners have had in stoking anti-LGBTI hatred in Africa by co-opting postcolonial politics for their own ends. The notion that money flows from abroad to fund a ‘homosexual agenda’ needs to be countered forcefully with the indisputable truth that foreign money is flooding from the US to fund an insidious neoconservative agenda. The lies told about LGBTIs in Africa need to be exposed as such.

The most effective way to counter lies is to tell the truth again and again: African LGBTIs are not awash with money. Declaring yourself pro-gay does not incite a tidal wave of Western cash to come your way. LGBTIs are not a foreign contagion.

US neoconservatives are behind these lies. Right-wing American religious fundamentalists do not care about Africa, no matter how much they may attempt to co-opt the postcolonial political debate. Only once these truths begin to uproot the lies that are so deeply embedded will the American neoconservative grip around the necks of African LGBTIs finally begin to loosen.

Twelve years ago I was broken. I had just ended a 29-year marriage, sent my only kid off to college, and was left broke and unemployed, left with the cats and the dog to feed. Not exactly my life plan. I was alone for the first time in my life and filled with fear.

I sold the big house on the hill and started a new life in the city in a cute little condo that was to be my healing place. I traded the country club membership for a job and sold my Mercedes-Benz and bought a used BMW. I penned my book, “Single Past 50 Now What?” and was thrilled when it was published. I moved on with my life as best I could.

It took two years before I dated again. Broken hearts bring with them broken lives and battered self-esteem. It took time to mend, heal and get my head together.

When I did, I went about the business of rebuilding. The friendships I was graced with became lifetime alliances. Life was good again and I had learned how to sleep alone. A triumph of epic proportions.

I dated happily and smartly, laughed a lot and felt comfortable in my skin again. Everything in my world was just as I wanted it. Everything.

That’s about the time I received an email from an old high school friend of mine, a wonderful young man named Steven. We had been hangout buddies 40 years ago. I responded to his email and the conversations began.

We talked and it was as comfortable as ever. Much to my surprise I discovered that he had a crush on me back in the day (who knew?!). As the conversation unfolded he disclosed that he never married. He later shared that he had been waiting for me … all these years.

Who does that? He did.

We began long-distance phone dating (a lot more exciting than it sounds) for three months. The time came to meet in person (can we say “nerve wracking”?). I flew back home to L.A. and reacquainted myself with the man who was one of my favorite people in years gone by.

The next year and a half was filled with twice-a-month visits from Steven. Southwest Airlines loved us, as he booked his fares from L.A. to Denver months in advance. Even in record breaking snow storms, the man never missed a weekend. At the end of those months together, it was time for a commitment.

It wasn’t long before I followed this man across the country, with everything I owned in tow. I was about to take a second chance on love. If you knew me at all, you would know that I’m the LAST person to ever follow a man anywhere.

Despite my fear and my doubt, he was the risk my gut was telling me to take.

Here’s the thing, when I find myself sitting on my front porch in my rocking chair at the ripe old age of 93, I’d much rather scold myself for making a bad decision than simmer in regret for something I didn’t have the courage to try.

The truth is, life offers no guarantees. Risk is part of the bargain. Knowing when to jump in or run from, is a crucial life skill. If there is anything I know for certain, it’s that nothing is for certain.

My life has always been about going beyond my imagination. Trying things I knew I had little chance succeeding at. Risking failure for a chance at success. Happiness, I have found, is less about the destination and much more about the pursuit.

We’ve been together six years now. A lot of growth, love and learning. We are buying a house together and settling in for a little something called the rest of our lives. All this time my life was waiting for my courage to catch up.

I love this man. He is everything I deserve. He is my gift, my light and my comfort. It will be my honor to marry him, despite my previous conviction that I would never marry again.

This is what I’ve learned and want to share with you: Happiness can always be found on the other side of fear.

Peterson, a crew member of a spaceship loading up with food animals on Mars, buys an enormous pig-like creature known as a "wub" from a native just before departure. Franco, his captain, is worried about the extra weight but seems more concerned about its taste, as his ship is short of food. However, after takeoff, the crew realizes that the wub is a very intelligent creature, capable of telepathy and maybe even mind control. Peterson and the wub spend time discussing mythological figures and the travels of Odysseus. Captain Franco, paranoid after an earlier confrontation with the Wub which left him paralyzed, bursts in and insists on killing and eating the wub. The crew becomes very much opposed to killing the sensitive creature after it makes a plea for understanding, but Franco still makes a meal out of him. At the dinner table, Captain Franco apologises for the "interruption" and resumes the earlier conversation Peterson had been having with the Wub – which has possessed the Captain's body. In this supernatural thriller, a woman believes that a visitor from another dimension is trying to guide her into a sinister mystery. Feeling lonely after her daughter leaves home for college, Claire (Michelle Pfeiffer) begins to sense that something is wrong in her house, and feels a spirit is trying to contact her. At first her husband Norman (Harrison Ford), a scientist doing research in genetics, attributes her paranormal beliefs to stress or possibly a nervous breakdown, and sends her to a psychiatrist (Joe Morton) who puts no more stock in Claire's stories than does Norman. While Claire's contention that someone or something sinister is afoot leads her down a number of blind alleys, in time she becomes convinced that the mysterious happenings at her home are somehow connected to the disappearance of a woman who was a student at the nearby college and bore a striking resemblance to Claire.

1,000 Lies And Counting: A Husband Who Can’t Tell The Truth (VIDEO)

Melisa claims her husband Chris, 27, is a pathological liar. He admits he’s had a problem with lying since he’s been a kid. But now she’s 16 weeks pregnant with their second child, they’re separated, and she’s desperate for help.

She tells Dr. Phil, “If I could guess how many times Chris has lied to me over five years, you would laugh. There’s no number. Literally, insanely, every day all day.”

Looking back, Melisa says, “In the beginning of our relationship, I was so smitten by our chemistry.” But now she realizes, “There were so many red flags in the beginning, but I was very oblivious. Love is blind.”

Now she is struggling to put an end to their marriage. “I am in a scary, vicious cycle with him because I just get sucked in,” she says. “I can’t get out.”

Chris understands Melisa’s frustration. “I do not blame Melisa for not trusting me,” he says. “I’ve lied about basically everything with her.”

After pointing out that he wishes she didn’t have a temper, and claiming that if she calmly confronted him he might own up to his lies, he adds, “Ultimately, I want Melisa to be proud of me. I want her to be respect me and to be her Prince Charming.”

Dr. Phil confronts Melisa: “What the hell are you thinking? This guy’s been lying to you since day one minute one, right?”

5 Boldfaced Lies About Being a Stepmom

2015-03-25-1427302769-2301709-StepMom.Magazine.jpg

Being a stepmom is like having a dirty little secret nobody wants to talk about.

Despite stepfamily statistics, which suggest that 42 percent of American adults have at least one step relative in their family, many people still cringe when they hear the word “stepmother.” This explains why women often avoid conversations about their step status, whether on the soccer field sidelines or at neighborhood cocktail parties.

On those rare occasions when the topic is offered up for discussion, it’s not uncommon for a stepmother’s friends and family to offer well-meaning advice. Yet, with all due respect, unless your loved ones are stepmoms, too, they probably have no idea what they’re talking about. Advice from those who lack any sort of stepfamily experience can range from contradictory to condescending.

And offering suggestions that work for first families to a stepmom is like trying to force a square peg into a round hole, because stepfamilies are arguably different from first families. First families don’t need to navigate tricky situations like exes, custody arrangements, visitation schedules, child support, legal issues or loyalty binds. Stepfamilies do, so even when things are good? They’re complicated!

Here are 5 boldfaced lies stepmoms hear all the time — and ample reason to ignore each one:

Lie #1: You should love your stepchildren like they’re your own.
Falling in love with someone is not a guarantee that you’ll love his or her kids. Asking a woman to love a child she didn’t plan for, give birth to or have much (if any) say in raising is like telling someone to pick a kid out of a crowd and instantly love them. It’s an unrealistic and unfair expectation that makes lots of warm, caring women feel like failures. Relationships take time, so don’t let anyone define your family’s natural progression. Practice kindness and mutual respect. If love develops? Great! Consider it a bonus.

Lie #2: If you’re nice to your stepkids, they’ll accept you.
No matter how wonderful you are your stepkids may still reject you. For a child, accepting dad’s new partner can feel like a betrayal to their mom. This is true even if their mom is out of the picture. It is especially true if she hasn’t moved on and/or makes it clear that she doesn’t approve of you. What’s a stepmom to do when her stepkids are stuck in loyalty binds like these? Brenda Snyder, LCSW, sums it up in the August 2013 issue of StepMom Magazine: “We accept it. We don’t take it personally. We embrace the role our stepchildren give us, as long as it guarantees the respect any adult deserves. We let them set the pace of our relationship.” Understand that loyalty binds aren’t your fault. A child can’t embrace you if her hands are tied.

Lie #3: Becoming a stepmom makes you a parent.
Stepmoms don’t have to think of themselves as parents. We get so tripped up by three little letters, m-o-m, that we forget it’s perfectly OK to assume the role of “dad’s wife.” In fact, lots of kids prefer this way of thinking, especially when their mother and father are both active in their lives. Kids don’t necessarily need or want a third parent. Others truly resent it. You can be a responsible adult within your own home and still let mom and dad do the heavy lifting of parenting. If a child is about to touch a hot stove, it’s your responsibility to guide them away from it — but parenting decisions about education, curfews and tattoos? Can be left to mom and dad.

Lie #4: You should always put the kids first.
Consistently putting the kids’ needs above your own teaches them and your partner that your needs are less important than everyone else’s. Stepfamily life requires juggling from everyone. Yes, you’re an adult. But you have needs and you deserve to be happy, too. Pay attention to the warning signs: If you feel depressed, angry, burnt out or resentful, you’ve probably been neglecting your own needs for far too long.

Lie #5: Stepmothers are wicked.
Stepmoms go to great lengths to avoid being called wicked. The best way to dispel this lie is to stop letting a tired, old stereotype influence you. Lead by example. Don’t be embarrassed to say that you’re a stepmom. Don’t sugar coat your status by substituting euphemisms like “bonus” and “blended” for “stepfamily.” Hold your head high and show people what today’s stepmom really looks like. She’s smart. She’s loving. She’s dedicated. She does the best she can despite some extremely complicated situations. She’s pretty amazing. She’s you!
