A church destroyed. A congregation silenced. A relationship shattered. Yet even in life’s darkest valleys, a small flame can light the way toward healing and hope. A deadly fire rips through St. James Church, devastating the congregation and Pastor Dave. Adjoining Hadleigh University uses the tragedy to kick the congregation off campus. The escalating controversy creates a dilemma for the small church—can Christians fight for their rights and be the light for Christ at the same time? Facing a court case and his own struggle to see Christ’s light in heartbreak, Dave asks for help from Pearce, his estranged brother—a big-city lawyer and an atheist—to fight for the church’s right to exist. The family reunion opens old wounds, as the brothers wrestle with the questions that pulled them apart years ago: Is God really good all the time? Where is God when bad things happen? Can Christ really heal the brokenhearted? Pure Flix presents God’s Not Dead: A Light in Darkness—featuring a star-studded cast, including David A.R. White, John Corbett, Ted McGinley, Shane Harper, Jennifer Taylor, Benjamin Onyango, with special appearances by Dr. Cissy Houston and Tatum O’Neal.

Meanwhile, MadeWorn designer Blaine Halvorson will create a spin-off of his by-appointment-only Los Angeles showroom, as well as a zeppelin-shaped pop-up to mark the 50th anniversary of rock band Led Zeppelin.
Halvorson has invited Dr. Woo, the tattoo artist whose clients include Drake and Zoë Kravitz. Woo will make a two-week stop at Le Bon Marché, in addition to designing a capsule clothing collection for the store, alongside a shoe collaboration with Converse and a mini-collection with MadeWorn.

When a police chief who craves stability meets a free-thinking, colorful college professor, neither anticipate the fireworks that light up the night… After a mugging in grad school left her with an irrational fear of the night not even her PhD in psychology has helped overcome, Sadie Wren is sure she’s found an idyllic, safe place in Cottonbloom. When a break-in at her house shatters her sense of safety, gruff, protective Thaddeus Preston storms into her life. On the surface, they have little in common, but a loneliness she’s only too familiar with hides behind his infrequent smiles. But based on her knowledge of the human psyche, Sadie is convinced her infatuation with Thad will burn out as quickly as it flared. As the Chief of Police of Cottonbloom, Mississippi, Thaddeus Preston maintains a strict control on everything in the small town—himself included. With an older brother serving time for a crime Thad committed when he was just a kid, he lives a life of penance, not allowing anyone to get close. When a reported lurker turns into a real threat, Thad is determined to restore order as quickly as possible and get back to his virtual jail. But Thad’s brother gets out on probation just as Sadie and the town turns to him for protection. His tidy, barren life spins into chaos, and the only thing that makes sense is the one woman who shouldn’t.

Ava DuVernay Gets Central Park Five Documentary Green Light From Netflix

The Central Park Five, five Black youth who were falsely accused in the case Central Park jogger rape case in 1989, will be the focus of a new docu-series from Ava DuVernay. As the famed director has done in the past, DuVernay is partnering with Netflix to bring the limited series to life.

Variety reports:

Participant Media, Tribeca Productions and Harpo Films are behind the limited series with Oprah Winfrey, Jeff Skoll, Jonathan King, Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh serving as executive producers alongside DuVernay. The project is the latest collaboration for Winfrey and DuVernay who worked together on the Oscar-winning “Selma” and OWN’s “Queen Sugar.” For DuVernay, the project marks a return to Netflix for the filmmaker who wrote and directed the platform’s 2016 documentary “13th.”

“I had an extraordinary experience working with Netflix on ’13th’ and am overjoyed to continue this exploration of the criminal justice system as a narrative project with Cindy Holland and the team there,” said DuVernay. “The story of the men known as Central Park Five has riveted me for more than two decades. In their journey, we witness five innocent young men of color who were met with injustice at every turn — from coerced confessions to unjust incarceration to public calls for their execution by the man who would go on to be the President of the United States.”

And if you haven’t seen DuVernay’s 13th documentary, do yourself a favor and fire up the Netflix, but we doubt there will be any chill after viewing the powerful examination of the criminal justice system.

‘Illuminus’ to Light Up Fenway Park in Boston

LEAVING THE LIGHTS ON IN BOSTON: The lights have gone dark on Fenway Park for the Boston Red Sox’s 2015 season, but Saturday night a bevy of artists will illuminate the historic venue like never before with “Illuminus.”
The event will feature installations and performances by artists who manipulate light, sound and projection for a multisensory spectacle. This will be Boston’s contribution to the global “nuit blanche” movement, which was first established in Paris before taking hold in cities around the world. More than 10,000 turned out at last year’s edition in Boston’s SoWa outpost. “Illuminus” will cap off the inaugural HUBweek, a citywide series of experiences laced with art, science and technology pulled together with the support of The Boston Globe, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital.
Artists and musicians Maria Finkelmeier and Ryan Edwards will literally turn Fenway Park’s famed “Green Monster” — the 37-foot, 2-inch left field wall for non-Red Sox fans — into a giant percussion instrument. Other installations and projections will be beamed on nearby Lansdowne Street. And Boston Properties will light up the Prudential Tower with the words “Art Hub” Saturday night at dusk, lest any Newbury Street or Pru shoppers need a

TheWrap is reporting that a Soul Food sequel featuring original cast members has been approved by Fox 2000 Pictures following the runaway success of 2013’s The Best Man Holiday. The 1997 film, centered around a Black Chicago family, put issues such as money, adultery, death and unity on the forefront, and has gone on to become a cult classic since its release.

The original film featured a star-studded cast of Vanessa L. Williams, Vivica A. Fox, Nia Long and Mekhi Phifer, and all are expected to return for the Soul Food sequel. Director George Tillman Jr. (Barbershop 2 & 3) who got his big break in the original, will also return to direct, produce and write with Nathan Skulnik. Adding to the reunion is once power couple Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and Tracey Edmonds, who are returning as co-producers.

From 2000-2004, Showtime ran a television series based on the film that ignited the careers of Nicole Ari Parker and Boris Kodjoe.

No word as of yet when the Soul Food sequel will begin production. Hopefully, it will a spawn an equally potent soundtrack as well.

But when Abby gets dragged into the evil and mayhem from Noah's world, he realizes that maybe with Abby he can find a home here on Earth…if he can save her in time. Interview with the Author Q – So, what makes the Six Saviors series special? A – It's a mix of things, really. When I set out to write these books, I wanted to create something that mirrored exactly the kind of books I like to read, yet I wanted to create something a little different. I love reading paranormal romance bestsellers, as well as fantasy and sci-fi romance best sellers. The Six Savior books are a great mix of these genres. You'll find the series focuses on the fantasy / sci-fi romance genre with a little paranormal activity thrown in. There is also some action and adventure as well to keep the stories interesting. Overall, the Six Saviors series is designed to keep you turning the pages – and I've made sure there's never a dull moment until everyone gets their happily ever after. Q – What order should I read the books in? A – I’ve written the series so you can read the books in any order, and all the story threads will tie up nicely by the time you're finished. If you do want to read them in order, I'd suggest the following sequence: The Light Within Me (free sci-fi/fantasy romance) Finding My Faith REBORN Beverly’s Rebirth Destiny’s Shift Tangled Fates The Dream Walker Atonement Q – So, why should readers give these books a try? A – Because each book in the Six Saviors series focuses on one of the warriors, and all are alpha males who meet their match when they finally meet their mates. There is humor, action and adventure, and of course, romance. All books have hit the top ten best sellers in their categories, and all have received rave reviews. Ultimately, readers who enjoy sci-fi/fantasy romance with action and adventure will enjoy the Six Saviors. Dr. Letitia Morgan comes to Hartville, Colorado, in the late 1800s to follow her God-given calling to heal. Soon she becomes Hartville's ministering angel, reaching out to the children of the town drunk, and skillfully touching all who need her.  But not everyone warms to the lovely new physician and Letty ruffles plenty of feathers when she takes on Hartville's thriving brothels. As she rescues first one then another young girl forced into the sordid trade, Letty becomes the target of some of the town's most powerful people. Eric Wagner, Hartville's newspaper editor, finds he got much more than he bargained for when he brought this female doctor to town. As Letty stirs more controversy with each passing day, he wonders if he can save the noble-minded doctor from herself.  This is heart-warming and engaging fiction at its best, straight from the pen of a skilled storyteller.

Solange Shines Light On 15 Women For Her “Word To The Woman” Puma Collaboration

2015-08-04-1438723934-6302476-Kicks.jpg

Before this shoot, I was in the middle of a two week whirlwind mixed with life, work and creative projects. I had a massive meeting in Amsterdam at G-Star headquarters then bounced around Europe. I briefly came back to New York, went away again, then returned to New York one day before this shoot.

I was counting down the days to the “Word to the Woman” shoot filled with excitement. I got to work super early that morning, partially because of excitement and partially because I knew I had to leave a bit early to make it to the shoot…I guess I am telling on myself at this point, but I completed everything I needed to at the office before I hopped in an Uber. Sitting silently in the backseat I was grateful it was just 7 minute zip from where I was.

We shot in a quaint two bedroom, cozy apartment, the way I like homes to feel. As I entered the room I greeted the team, DJ Lindsey (one of the featured women) and Solange before I headed into the wardrobe room.

I opened the door to the warmest welcome and one of the most beautiful smiles by Lizzy Okpo, who styled the shoot and put all my butterflies at ease. After checking out my outfit option I headed to hair and make-up, nestled in a little boys room full of toys. Apart of me wanted to dig through them like I was 5 but I sat down and started to get pretty! I am an adult after all.

2015-08-05-1438804812-9104348-Kittylayingdown.jpg

I turned around and literally choked on my words. Neal Ferinah was doing my hair, I haven’t seen him in about 15 years and he has known me before I was even born (when I was still in my mother’s womb if we want to get exact). It was one of those moments when you know your stars are aligned and you are where you are supposed to be. What are the odds!

While he was adding some life to my fro, my teal and salmon nails were asked to be covered in white which I decided needs to be my new go to color, it popped beautifully against my skin.

2015-08-04-1438726724-362256-tumblr_nsdd4iBXF61uczg7ro1_r1_1280.jpg

Everyone was moving fast and I was almost ready. I was most excited about my eye makeup because that is the one department where I literally can’t do more then a black line. My eye makeup was bold and vibrant; beautiful tones of green and blues with a touch white to close the deal.

2015-08-05-1438804616-2421254-KittyLosstbunny.jpg

I quickly slipped into my nude ensemble, a color I don’t often wear because of my pale complexion but the two -piece was to die for, and Lizzy’s taste is impeccable.

My outfit was paired with the mono toned yellow suede Puma that I had already planned a few outfits around. I was a bit shy, nervous, anxious, and excited at the same time. The photographer, J. Quazi King was ready and so was I. The wall was white, the couch was concealed with a white throw, and the floors were wooden. I was briefed on the mood and took direction from Solange, you know a regular Wednesday afternoon!

She was so graceful as she showed me how to move and I realized I wasn’t quite there yet… as I chuckled to myself. I tried to give a “fierce mean face” which somehow turned into a big teeth bearing smile, I think I was just too happy to even think an angry thought. It looks a lot easier than it is! Trust mii daddy **Skepta voice**.

I really loved the details of the books wrapped in salmon colored newspaper to boost the palette of the shot. It was minimal, soft, fresh, and innocent…a part of me that somehow was captured through every detail of my carefully curated environment.

2015-08-04-1438722005-4240358-CacheeLivingston422.jpg

Once we got the shot, I headed back to the wardrobe room for the video segment post rolling around on the couch. It all kind of made sense in that moment. I realized what the campaign was all about. The empowerment of women through a series of various visual stories that all lead to a road of greatness.

I have always admired women who had a voice, power, or wisdom who were not afraid to share it. Women who may see the light in another woman and pushes her to shine brighter. Women who dare to be themselves, take risks, be vulnerable, and love on purpose. These women are somewhat rare, because it takes a very particular type of woman to do this. This woman is selfless, loving, strong, willing, and able all balled into one. Somehow Solange was able to delve into a sea of women and handpick a few that to her innovate and redfine roles from varied walks of life.

In that moment, I stepped outside of my 9-5, my love for music, and my never-ending hustle to be embrace that special moment and be happy. I was beyond honored to be hand selected by Solange alongside such powerful and inspiring women. Here are some of the other women featured:

Pew pew pew!

On Saturday, presidential candidate and Mexico’s favorite piñata Donald Trump made some particularly nasty comments about Senator John McCain over his POW experience. Trump said McCain is only a “war hero because he was captured.”

After considerable blowback, Trump remained firm, saying on Sunday that he will not apologize for the comments.

HuffPost has ALL CAPS EXCLUSIVELY ALL CAPS obtained Trump’s own personal military record for comparison:

Freak. Witch. Crazy. Schizo. Ember Brycin has been called them all. She’s always known she’s different. No one has ever called her normal, even under the best circumstances. Bizarre and inexplicable things continually happen to her, and having two different colored eyes, strange hair, and an unusual tattoo only contributes to the gossip about her. When the latest school explosion lands her in a facility for trouble teens, she meets Eli Dragen, who’s hot as hell and darkly mysterious. Their connection is full of passion, danger, and secrets. Secrets that will not only change her life, but what and who she is—leading her down a path she never imagined possible. Between Light and Dark, Ember finds a world where truth and knowledge are power and no one can be trusted. But her survival depends on finding out the truth about herself. In her pursuit, she is forced between love and destiny and good and evil, even when the differences between them aren’t always clear. At worst, she will incite a war that could destroy both worlds. At best, she will not only lose her heart but her life and everyone she loves. Once the truth is out, however, there will be no going back. And she’ll definitely wish she could.

Theater: Jimmy Awards Light Up Broadway With Teen Talent

NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATRE AWARDS *** out of ****
MINSKOFF THEATRE

Summertime may be slow for new shows on Broadway, but it’s a great chance for other events to garner attention. The August Wilson Monologue Competition in May spotlights USA’s greatest playwright and gives high school kids from around the country a chance to sink their teeth into his work. If you’re planning a visit to the city in July, checking out the brand new musicals getting full productions in the New York Musical Theatre Festival from July 7-27 is an absolute must.

And in June, savvy theater buffs check out the talent on display at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards. Hosted by two time Tony winner Michael Cerveris, the awards offer scholarships to deserving winners, give 52 talented teens a chance to be mentored, receive top notch coaching, work with directors and choreographers and then perform numbers on a Broadway stage. But put all that good work aside: it’s just a fun evening of entertainment and you invariably spot a star or two of tomorrow. They’re nicknamed the Jimmy, in honor of James Nederlander, who has been working in the theater world for 86 years (he started sweeping the floors for his dad when he was 7) and was proudly in attendance.

The evening is split into two parts. In the first half, six groups of performers do medleys of songs from the musical that took them from their local schools to regional competitions to New York City. Numbers are strung together very cleverly, often with two or more actors who tackled Mary Poppins or Doctor Frankenstein or the lead in Big Fish (apparently a big show in high schools last year!) trading off lines in clever ways. Based on this night’s entertainment (and a full solo performance by each actor the day before for a panel of judges) six finalists are selected. In the second act, three men and three women do another number and two winners are chosen.

It’s a fun night worth every penny, with the money going to fund the evening and all the arts outreach done by the various groups involved with the National High School Musical Theatre Awards. Naturally, the audience is filled with family and friends. Yet it’s a shame more casting directors and agents don’t flock to the show because there’s a lot of talent here. They really should post the solo performances from Sunday of all 52 performers online, not to mention the medleys and solo numbers done live on stage Monday night. Why not showcase their talent as much as possible?

The performers themselves give you hope for musical theater when you realize how much work they put into learning their choreography, the group numbers, the lyrics of the other songs in their medleys AND bits of business to do throughout. All in less than a week. Much credit for the night goes to director Van Kaplan, choreographer Kiesha Lalama and musical director and arranger Michael Moricz, who do a sterling job in a very short amount of time molding these kids into a satisfying ensemble.

I’m not quite sure who to credit for the creative decisions that turn 52 individual performances into a medley. Vast fun is had in transitioning from one song into another, often to humorous effect. Wisely, they focus on turning out a good show, rather than worrying about shortchanging one performer or another. There’s simply no good way to showcase three different actors who played the same role and each gets a chance to strut their stuff the day before. Witty moments abound and it’s surely a group effort of all involved, though Kaplan’s name is at the top as director.

The highlight was unquestionably having the maid in Caroline, Or Change bemoan her job and then having two of the four actresses who played Mary Poppins assure Caroline that “In every job that must be done/ there is an element of fun.” Clearly a tremendous effort has been made to give all the actors bits of business: they stay in character even when performing in the ensemble or passing off the baton from one performer to the next, often getting little laughs but never, ever upstaging one another or interfering with the overall flow.

Marla Louissant was the night’s standout and won Best Actress for her performance as Caroline, as well as a solo turn doing “I’m Here” from The Color Purple. The judges have a lot more to draw upon when making their choices than the audience but there was no doubting Louissant’s talent as an actress and singer. If the new Broadway revival of The Color Purple didn’t already have its star, Louissant would be ready to make the leap today, just as a runner up from two years ago jumped right into the West End revival of Miss Saigon.

Anthony Skillman won Best Actor after doing a number from Tarzan and a solo turn from Parade, specifically Frankie’s angry soliloquy “It Don’t Make Sense.” And Skillman proved Tony ready in his endearing acceptance speech, giving a happy shout out to the Supreme Court decision for marriage equality and thanking his parents in the audience in the same breath.

Here’s Skillman doing a performance of a medley during one of the regional events leading up to the finals.

Yet they were far from the only story here. I circled six people as locks for the finals (I got three right) and another ten as very promising talents. So more applause for Kylie Lynn Heyman who gave verve to Reno Sweeney of Anything Goes. I was certain she’d be one of the finalists! Travis Anderson was a long-limbed Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, also from Anything Goes (but a different production), creating a full comic performance in about 90 seconds. He was matched by Zac Gottschall’s equally winning Horace Vandergelder from Hello, Dolly and Larry McKay’s charming J. Pierrepont Finch from How To Succeed.

Marnie Quick made the tricky Bacharach/David tune “Wishin’ And Hopin'” seem easy. She too was a deserved finalist. Aleksander Papanastasopoules had by far the best name of the night and was a very good Javert, matched by Evatt Salinger’s convincing Jean Valjean. Kamari A. Saxon was the lucky talent who earned a scholarship to attend Carnegie Mellon’s pre-College Drama Program. (I wish I’d been able to hear his performance from Violet in full.) Noah Barnes was a natural for Joe Hardy from Damn Yankees he’s too handsome and gifted with such a classic, gorgeous Broadway voice (he opened his mouth and filled the Minskoff with ease) that you have to believe this won’t be the last time Barnes will be on stage in New York.

Finally, my vote for Best Actor based simply on what I saw this night was for finalist Alec Michael Ryan who was excellent as Laurence in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and — like Louissant — had one of the night’s cleverest transitions and made the most of it, in his case playing off Les Miserables. His solo turn (“Who I’d Be” from Shrek The Musical) jand medley number both felt like complete performances as both actor and singer. I don’t always say that with the pros being paid to perform on Broadway every night but I’m saying it about him. And I’d happily pay to see him perform again.

News in Brief: Frustrated NSA Now Forced To Rely On Mass Surveillance Programs That Haven’t Come To Light Yet

FORT MEADE, MD—Expressing frustration over Congress’ decision to let the provisions allowing the bulk collection of phone data expire, annoyed National Security Agency officials reported Monday that the organization would now be forced to rely exclusively on mass surveillance programs that have yet to come to light. “Unfortunately, lawmakers chose to limit our intelligence-gathering capabilities by discontinuing key sections of the Patriot Act, and now we have no choice but to depend on a number of other civilian-monitoring initiatives that continue to remain hidden from the public,” said NSA director Michael Rogers, adding that, although the agency still has a wide variety of covert hacking, wiretapping, and GPS-tracking programs at its disposal that have not yet been exposed by whistleblowers or investigative journalists, the end of its ability to record the phone data of millions of Americans still represents “a fairly sizable inconvenience” for the organization. “Obviously, we will …

Cabaret: Betty Buckley Shines A (Ghost) Light At Joe’s Pub

BETTY BUCKLEY *** out of ****
JOE’S PUB AT THE PUBLIC THEATER

Fans won’t want to miss Tony winner Betty Buckley’s all-too-brief stint at Joe’s Pub through May 31. I’m still disappointed I missed her last fall here. First, Joe’s Pub is one of New York City’s best intimate spaces for live performance. Second, she was promoting her new album Ghostlight, which was co-produced by longtime friend T Bone Burnett and may well be the album of her career. It was certainly one of the ten best CDs of 2014. I hoped and assumed Buckley would still be promoting that work.

But ever restless as Buckley is, she’s created an entirely new show dubbed “Dark Blue-Eyed Blues.” It finds Buckley in a playful mood. She dished up some amusing anecdotes, ranging from singing one of her favorite songs in the shower (“Come To Me, Bend To Me,” a highlight of that album and this show), feeling jealous of the spotlight at a grade school talent show and falling in love with a hot but dumber-than-soap man and needing couples therapy to admit to herself she’d have to move on from this appealing but inert hunk.

This light mood was captured in quick, upbeat renditions of “Them There Eyes,” “Do Nothin’ Till You Hear From Me” and “Blues In The Night” (not to mention the defiant “I’m Still Here” which Buckley sang recently in an all-star concert production of Follies at the Royal Albert Hall in London).

But for me, this isn’t where Buckley lives. Like Peggy Lee and Shirley Horn, Buckley is a master at quiet, intimate, revelatory renditions of songs you thought you knew but which sound utterly fresh and new when she sings them.

“This Nearly Was Mine’ (from South Pacific, of course and a rare selection that appeared on Ghostlight) was an early highlight of the 80 minute set, a moving but dry-eyed spin on a number currently showcased on Broadway in that musical’s revival.

(Dry-eyed, by the way, is not the most typical phrase to use when discussing Buckley since she digs deep into the emotions of tunes — not to mention offering a tribute to her friend Stephen Bruton who has gone too soon –and the tears often flow.)

Another masterful moment was the lullaby “All The Pretty Horses,” a song which would have fit perfectly on Ghostlight but doesn’t appear on that album. The arrangements of musical director Christian Jacob here and throughout the show leaned on dissonance to create a shimmering backdrop that is deceptive and one imagines quite tricky for a singer to navigate, though Buckley makes it seem easy. Between threading the needle on the arrangement and using her microphone with consummate skill, Buckley made this promise of a treat for a baby feel like a blessing of prosperity for one and all. They delivered similar magic on an exceptional Rodgers & Hart medley that contained “Where’s That Rainbow,” “Spring Is Here” and “Falling In Love With Love.”

Here’s Buckley singing “Bewitched.” It’s on her new album Ghostlight though Buckley didn’t sing it in this concert.

With her mother and godmother in the audience, Buckley was on her best behavior like any daughter would be. She also kept a stand with lyrics facing her wherever she wandered on the stage and those paying attention could enjoy a master class of seeing her quietly move it this way and that without ever calling attention to the fact. Whether Buckley always keeps lyrics handy to free her of anxiety or just at the beginning of a new show, I can’t say. I can say that her casual glances at the sheets now and then didn’t detract from her performance.

It’s been almost 18 years since she opened a show on Broadway, which is absurd, as Buckley proved by her terrific rendition of Sting’s “Practical Arrangement,” a cooly observant tune about a lack of love not being an impediment to marriage that was written for his musical The Last Ship but not used in the show. One wonders how a mother feels hearing the child she once held in her arms deliver the insight of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” as an encore, though of course it’s always a shock to remember this wise song was written when Mitchell was just 23 years old.

So it’s a solid if not yet transcendent show, with her band in fine form and Buckley in excellent voice. If you can’t catch it, do yourself a favor and get Ghostlight right away.

2015-05-29-1432874479-3011530-Ghostlight.jpg

And to heck with variety, Buckley, give us a dark night of the soul show, an In The Wee Small Hours style evening of intimacy and regret. Leave the upbeat numbers to the kids who don’t know better. On the penultimate performance of the concert proper, Buckley delivered Leonard Cohen’s “Bird On The Wire” with grace, opening her arms wide as she sang “I have tried in my way to be free,” as if to say, “This is who I am.” Revered? Definitely. Underutilized on stage and screen because she doesn’t play the game the way they expect? Unquestionably. Free? Artistically for sure, and that’s surely the only way that matters.

Country Star Sam Hunt’s ‘Take Your Time’ Shines Light On Domestic Violence

Sometimes country music is more than guitars and cowboy boots.

Country artist Sam Hunt’s song “Take Your Time,” off of his new album “Montevallo,” features a different storyline than most music videos. Instead of pairing his romantic ballad with a standard romantic plot line, Hunt uses his video to confront the topic of domestic violence. And the result is powerful.

The video features a young woman with an infant who’s in an abusive relationship. Hunt watches her from afar at a bar, laundry mat and gas station. Each time he sees the woman, her partner is shoving her and yelling at her.

At the end of the music video, the woman gets into her car to drive away from her partner, and he hits her in their front yard. Hunt finally intervenes. Watch the full video below.

While the reality of leaving an abusive partner is far more complicated than simply driving away, the music video shines a much-needed spotlight on the effects of domestic abuse.

In the U.S., intimate partner violence is something that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will face in their lifetimes. Three women are murdered every day by a current or former male partner and a woman is beaten every nine seconds in the U.S.

“With ‘Take Your Time,’ Hunt now brings country into the conversation [about domestic violence],” Mic’s Tom Barnes writes. “He adds the video to a growing collection of songs and artists attempting to stretch country to include more modern narratives.”

Job well done, Mr. Hunt.

Switching the Light on to Love

Relationship happiness has now become the ‘holy grail’ for many people, and too often, love hurts more than bringing happiness into our life. Why does something that starts out as a wonderful new beginning, seem to end so quickly in tears and sadness? Some eagerly pursue love, blindly repeating the same relationship mistakes, which leads to self-doubt in ever meeting someone. A lot of us also give up thinking the right relationship doesn’t exist, and others create similar relationships, again and again that are filled with conflict and hostility

The Place Behind the Pines: “The Killing” Ends in Light

“Detectives Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder are deeply affected by the murders they investigate in this dark, acclaimed series,” or so says Netflix, in its description of the show it acquired from AMC. Season Four premiered August 1, 2014 on Netflix and Linden and Holder continue to be “deeply affected,” — they are after all murder police. In the series’ final moments, however, these characters are lighter, fluid: Linden (Mireille Enos) smiles, and her lips do not crack; Holder (Joel Kinnaman) is less grey, in fact, his sneakers are meticulously white. The years of banter, witty cop repartee and underlying sexual tension culminates with no Hollywood kiss. Rather, the two hold each other in a gaze that’s full of gravitas and the promise of partnership, doing the work of “showing up” — one of Season Four’s reigning metaphors. These are a pair of broken people who get each other. Boiled down, the show is about that dynamic, which is why the ending works.

Some critics have called the ending unexpected, but the coupling feels right to me, as Linden, a perpetual runner, realizes home is with Holder — her “best friend,” and Holder’s eyes are no longer darting from here to there, tweaking out on whatever dogma will get him through the day: no, they are on this woman. This emotionally stunted, absentee mother has the capacity to love and care, to grieve and let go, all on her terms. As they’ve always been, Linden and Holder are both variations on the anti-hero. And that’s the thing about people who are “deeply affected;” they don’t always live in a functioning reality.

The pacing throughout this season was tight, with key episodes “The Good Soldier” (Episode 3) directed by Ed Bianchi and “Eden” (Series Finale) directed by Jonathan Demme creating a compelling arc of secrets that give themselves away, even in this land shielded by tall pines and unrelenting rain. The spectacle and melody of this crime drama always compelled me. To that end, the score, originally composed by Frans Bak for Forbrydelsen, the Danish series upon which The Killing is based, continues to do its job in this final season, patrolling the episodes and evoking tension. Bak’s familiar and well-structured soundtrack is not only haunting, but melodic, moody and steady, with percussive elements that build in turn with the emotional tension being played out on screen, more subtly than in previous seasons.

This season, our leads, more than ever are faced with seeing the monster within. Like cult crime drama favorites — Twin Peaks, True DetectiveThe Killing examines the place behind the pines, literally the seedy city built upon waterfront corruption, runaways and teen hookers. This is the brutality of the world Linden and Holder must make sense of, offset by the shades of Puget Sound. Moments when the camera pans back to the landscape feel naturalistic and meditative, a necessary complement to close-ups of blood spatter. These moments allow us to be enveloped by the fullness of the world as we spend time with its flawed but “deeply affected” characters. Throughout the season, Holder and Linden alternatively unravel with uncharacteristic rookie mistakes as they try to cover up the murder of Lieutenant Skinner, a.k.a serial killer, the Pied Piper. Linden misplaces shell casings discharged during Skinner’s execution and returns to the scene of the crime. Coming off of a drug binge, Holder looks for God and confesses to the murder in a N.A. meeting. These “slip-ups” force the characters to get caught and show up for the consequences behind their transgressions.

As the series wraps, we are left in a flash forward to years later, when the characters are no longer cloaked in firs and storm clouds, but rather illuminated by — of all things — the sun. They have grown younger having shed the skin of their badges, and series creator, Veena Sud leaves us thinking about a world where Linden and Holder can feel as opposed to being “deeply affected.”
