Mom Of Gucci Mane’s Son Says She’s Living On Welfare While Rapper Lives It Up

World Famous Rapper Gucci Mane Shopping At The Gucci Store.

Source: WENN.com / WENN

The mother of Gucci Mane‘s 11-year-old son says she’s living on welfare and living in Section 8 housing while the boy’s famous father lives lavishly. Sheena Evans is seeking up to $ 20,000 in child support payments from the rapper and author, which would be an $ 18,000 increase.

The Blast reports:

A hearing was held this week in the case brought by Gucci’s baby mama, Sheena Evans, who sued seeking an increase in the monthly support from the current $ 2,026 a month to $ 20k for their 11-year-old son, Keitheon.

In video shot by Dennis Byron at the hearing, her lawyer spoke to the judge and said her client lives in Section 8 housing, is on government assistance, receives food stamps and is on Medicaid … all while Gucci is making millions.

In her suit filed last year, Evans argued the rapper was making a substantial amount more since leaving prison in 2011.

Gucci’s baby mama took issue with him spending a considerable amount of money on fine jewelry and says when the rapper got married, he spent in excess of $ 1 million for his wedding.

Gucci Mane’s side says that the rapper’s finances have not increased despite Evans’ claims and wants the case tossed out.

Time’s Up: Old White Men Hated The March For Our Lives #MarchForOurLives

March For Our Lives In Washington, DC

Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty

Hundreds of thousands of peaceful protesters in Washington, DC alone and thousands more across the globe made this past weekend’s March For Our Lives a resounding success. But of course, there were those ready to irrationally hate on the movement—usually old white men scared that their reigns on power are quickly slipping out of their grasp.

Let’s start with Pat Buchannan. A racist who people still bother with asking questions, for whatever reason.

Patty Boy thought all those eloquent kids who spoke on the stage weren’t very thoughtful. What protest was he watching?

Then there is Iowa GOP Rep. Steve King, a devout White Supremacist, who decided to come for Emma Gonzalez (whose speech was one of Saturday’s most powerful moments) and her Cuban heritage.

Don’t be fooled, King’s claim is factually inaccurate (and note that he is attacking a victim). Also, Gonzalez’s classmate David Hogg hit back with panache on her behalf.

Three is a trend, so next up is Alex Jones, the conspiracy theorist whose life is the utmost struggle. This guy thinks the protests were a ploy to kill gun owners. Seriously.

Let us end with Rick Santorum, a former GOP Senator. He suggested kids instead of looking for someone else to solve their problems, should take CPR classes. We’ll let the woke homie Hogg address Santorum’s diarrhea of the brain below.

Noticing a pattern? If you’re an old white man who is down for the cause, you have nothing to worry about. If you’re an old white man and offended, you’re part of the problem, and your time is up.

By the way these guys are reacting, the kids must be doing something right.

Why Black Lives Matter (BLM) and Republicans are Natural Allies (or should be)

One of the big changes in our national consciousness, thanks to President Trump, is that many of us are starting to see politics in terms of “deals.” We are also thinking about a growing economy. Compare that approach to the Obama/Bernie/Clinton worldview that is more about wealth transfer in a world of scarcity. For my purposes today, you don’t need to decide which approach is better. I only make the claim that we are more focused on the Art of the Deal than at any time in American politics. This is one of the many ways President Trump is in our heads.

And the deal-making mindset, along with some lucky coincidences, has created the greatest opportunity for improvement that the African-American community has seen in decades. At the same time, Republicans have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to earn a larger share of the black vote in 2018 and beyond. All we are missing is the right deal. Is there a potential deal that is good for President Trump and the GOP while also being good for BLM?

Yes. And it isn’t even hard.

I’ll get to that deal after some necessary context. (It’s worth your time.)

You probably remember that candidate Trump famously asked African-American voters during the campaign “What the hell do you have to lose?” It sounded like a weak offer when I first heard it. But combined with his deal-making approach to politics, you could also see it as an invitation to pitch some ideas. The door is open.

Some of you might recall that when Colin Kaepernick started the kneeling trend in the NFL, I publicly offered to help translate any ideas he might have for improving the lives of black Americans into “Republican language” so there would be some hope of persuading the group that held the most political power. I never heard any specific suggestions from Kaepernick. But as I often say, he gets full credit as a Master Persuader for capturing our attention and holding it. He has skin in the game, he broke no laws, and he turned a back-burner issue in America into a front-burner issue. I give Kaepernick an A+ for American activism. Was Kaepernick offensive to people who love the flag and respect the police? Absolutely. That’s why we paid so much attention. But he didn’t break anything except for the way we think, and that was his objective.

As of this writing, Kaepernick only got us halfway to where he wants us to be. He lacked specific suggestions for improvement. Black Lives Matter has been similar. They get high marks for attracting attention, but they have so far been more provocative than helpful. I need to pause here to tell you that BLM has a wide range of personalities and priorities in it. On one extreme you have folks who are anti-police, anti-borders, pro-violence, and other unhelpful positions. But other chapters support the rule of law, including support for police, and are looking for practical solutions to real problems. If you dislike the extremists in BLM, consider supporting the BLM leaders who are focused on peaceful and practical solutions. That’s the mindset that gave us Martin Luther King Jr. I think that worked out for everyone.

Black Lives Matter (NY Chapter), under the leadership of Hawk Newsome, just came up with a set of suggested improvements that can — with a little negotiating — appeal to both Democrats and Republicans. If both parties like what they see, Republicans have the stronger hand because they are in power at the moment. The tie goes to the party that can make things happen. Love him or hate him, President Trump does make things happen. And he likes making deals. In other words, BLM of NY is answering President Trump’s invitation with a “What do you have to lose?” offer of their own.

If you have the time to hear my persuasive pitch of BLM-NY’s ideas on video, see them here. For the full persuasive effect, watch the video before reading the “spoilers” that follow. But this blog post can be consumed without watching the video.

I contacted Hawk Newsome to see how I could help his cause after watching a video in which he flipped a crowd of Trump-supporters from haters to friends in about five minutes. It was one of the most impressive acts of persuasion I have ever seen. Watch it here and see what I mean. This isn’t the BLM you thought you knew.

Hawk shared with me an early version of his chapter’s suggested improvements for the country. Again, I was impressed. The suggestions were beneficial to Americans in general, not just the black community, although that group might feel they have the most to gain, and perhaps they do. This was the same sort of persuasion strategy that got President Obama elected twice. Obama emphasized his policies, not his color, and that approach allowed people of every ethnicity to support him. BLM of NY figured out how to do the same thing. They offer practical suggestions that are designed to be good for people in general. I can support that.

Prior to publication of BLM-NY’s suggestions, I ran them past a prominent Republican to see what he thought. To my surprise, the prominent Republican — who shall remain nameless for now — told me BLM was thinking too small. So he offered as an alternative some bigger themes that I’ll share with you first because these are quite compatible with BLM’s priorities.

A Prominent Republican’s Vision for Improving Black Lives (because they matter):

  1. Create safer neighborhoods to attract jobs and create optimism.
  2. Fix school bureaucracies in communities where students are failing.
  3. Create apprenticeships for unskilled adults
  4. Address the opiod epidemic directly and by improving the environment.

You probably think those are good priorities. BLM agrees. And if I took it further and asked you which group thinks Charter schools are a good idea, you might be surprised to learn that the answer is “both.” On the big stuff, and on much of the small stuff too, BLM is entirely compatible with Republican ideals. When you are trying to make a deal, it helps to start with the parts upon which you agree.

Now I’ll share with you the BLM-NY list of suggestions. These ideas go directly to improving the credibility of the police. Republicans want the police to be credible too. Republicans also like good data, the rule of law, voting participation, and legal decisions that are free of bias. That’s what BLM-NY is focused on too. Here’s their list. Notice that every suggestion is useful for citizens in general, not just one ethnic group.

Ideas from Black Lives Matter – New York

  1. Prosecute and jail police that falsify reports.
  2. Police must call an ambulance if defendant complains of illness.
  3. Voting rights for people in prison
  4. Independent prosecutors for police killings of unarmed civilians.
  5. Comprehensive national database of police shootings.
  6. New York holiday for Day of Remembrance for victims of police brutality.

I’ll discuss these points in order.

Prosecute and jail police that falsify reports.

I think most Republicans would agree that a police officer who falsifies a police report must be held accountable. Republicans like the rule of law, and they like honesty. So far, BLM and Republicans are on the same page.

Police must call an ambulance if defendant complains of illness.

You might not know that people in police custody have died while begging for medical care that was not granted. I think we’d all want access to emergency medical care if we were in police custody. You might see some abuses of the system, but I think we’d all agree this one is worth discussing.

Voting rights for people in prison

I’ve never understood why prisoners lose the right to vote. Voting makes people feel part of the system. It seems like one of the few psychological influences that can nudge law-breakers toward becoming law-abiding. Realistically, only a small percentage of convicted criminals would bother to vote. The prickly part is that most would (presumably) vote Democrat. But Republicans can compete for those votes, and should. A good start would involve taking the lead in returning the vote to that class of folks.

Independent prosecutors for police killings of unarmed civilians.

Why not try independent prosecutors for police shootings of unarmed civilians? You could test it in one city or more and see how it goes. Budget-wise, I suspect we’d be better off in the long run with this sort of credibility-improving process. Perhaps you’d get less after-verdict violence. It’s worth discussing, and probably worth testing somewhere.

Comprehensive national database of police shootings.

Republicans will argue that the data does not show police are more violent with black suspects. African-Americans will tell you their lived experience says otherwise. BLM-NY offers the only sensible way forward, recommending national standards for reporting police violence against unarmed civilians. Who hates better data?

New York holiday for Day of Remembrance for victims of police brutality.

New York can decide on whether or not it wants a Day of Remembrance for victims of police brutality. I think the idea as proposed is divisive, framing the situation as one in which police are the bad guys. The point of the suggestion is to keep the problem of police violence against unarmed citizens in our thoughts, but I’m sure there’s a more productive way to do that. For example, if BLM and the GOP find a way to work together on some parts of this list, no one will forget that anytime soon. I prefer focusing on the positives.

Now consider how perfect the set-up is for a win-win deal between African-American voters and the GOP. President Trump’s biggest political problem is the perception that he’s a racist. Improving the economy and the job market doesn’t fix that problem, although it helps. But taking seriously BLM-NY’s list of suggestions — in some negotiated and improved form — would be a game-changer.

President Obama was hugely popular among black voters, but there is a sense in the African-American community that he didn’t deliver. Democrats have no charismatic leader at the moment, and not much power at the federal level compared to the GOP. Never before has the GOP been in such a strong position to make a play for a good portion of the African-American vote. All they need to do to get the ball rolling is take BLM-NY’s suggestions seriously as a basis for a deal. And BLM-NY is making that easy by presenting practical ideas that are not race-specific.

I spoke with Hawk again yesterday and both of us had just watched the recent viral video of a police shooting of an unarmed man in a hallway as it had been recorded on the police officer’s body cam. When you see the video you can understand why the cop opened fire. The man was reportedly armed, according to the initial call to police, and refused to keep his hands where he was ordered to keep them. In this case, the body cam protected the police officer as well as the reputation of the police by showing us exactly how the tragedy unfolded. Hawk and I were left wondering if a greater focus on body cams for police would be a practical approach to building confidence between the black community and police. I don’t know the answer, but here again we see a practical idea that I assume Republicans can embrace.

And to that I say, why the hell not?

How Many Lives Did Gun Control Laws Save in Las Vegas? (Answer: Probably Lots)

I’m pro-gun. I say that up front because your beliefs about my intentions will color how you see this post. My intention is to be objective. You can be the judge.

The Vegas gunman used bump stocks on semi-automatic rifles. Those were totally legal. They are also a poor choice of weapons, or so I am told by gun experts. In fact, they are so inaccurate at the distance involved in the Vegas incident that professional snipers say Paddock could have done more damage with a single-shot weapon and some aiming.

The gun experts I talked to (informally) also agree that the shooter would have killed more than a hundred additional people had he used a fully-automatic weapon. You can legally buy an automatic weapon that was made prior to 1986, for about $ 15-20K. The shooter was a millionaire, and he seemed to know a lot about guns. He would have known a fully-automatic rifle is designed to not jam the way his bump stock rifles did. He would have known they fire more bullets per second and more accurately. The death toll would have been much higher had the Vegas gunman used the right weapon.

He knew a fully automatic rifle would be more lethal than a bump stock rifle.

He was rich enough to afford the fully automatic weapon.

He had months to plan and prepare.

He was smart.

And yet he didn’t use a fully-automatic weapon in the attack.

The probable reason is that a fully-automatic weapon is harder to obtain and it raises some flags. I believe even private transactions with those weapons require some government paperwork.

I’m speculating, of course, but it seems to me that the ban on fully-automatic weapons did, over time, create enough friction for the Vegas gunman that he decided to settle for relatively worse weapons.

Ask a gun expert how many more people would be dead if automatic weapons were as easy to procure as bump stocks. My estimate of a hundred extra dead in Vegas is probably low.

Gun control apparently worked in this case, at least to an important degree. The tragedy could have been far bigger. A little bit of friction for obtaining a fully automatic weapon probably saved lives. We can’t know for sure what was in the mind of a madman, but we do know that any kind of friction causes some people to change plans. That’s probably what happened here.

My hypothesis is that crazy people will use whatever weapon is the most effective killing device they can obtain at acceptable cost (friction). Gun laws introduce friction. They are not intended to stop every type of crime or to deter every type of criminal. But it looks like they helped a bit in Vegas. Had there been no friction to procuring fully automatic weapons, it is likely the Vegas gunman would have used them. Why wouldn’t he?

If you want to read my argument for why I am pro-gun, see the end of this prior post.

It might be a good idea to pre-order my new book, Win Bigly, at this special page, because you get a bonus chapter by email. You’ll like it.

Black Trans Lives Matter, Too

2016-02-04-1454591839-5008757-20162_Trans_Community_Ethan_ParkerWEB.png

Tragically, 2015 was the deadliest year on record for black trans and gender non conforming women with the total number of murder victims ranging from 21-25. Our average life expectancy is a paltry 35 years, less than half that of the average cisgender woman. The violence against folks like us is occurring at a rate that remains alarmingly high, and contributes to that shortened life expectancy. This unfortunate reality prompted me to join the larger #BlackLivesMatter movement, because we must declare that all black lives matter, including black trans folks.

Many of the causes of death have yet to be released, but from what is known, a majority of the black trans women lynched this year were either shot, burned, or stabbed to death while engaged in the sex trades. As I bear witness to these stories, I’ve begun contextualizing the violence against folks like us through the lens of Ida B. Wells’ A Red Record, a work of investigative journalism that tracked lynchings in the 19th and 20th century. Her legacy empowered me to utilize communication technologies like social media to lift up our stories.

In colonized lands across the globe, there is a war being waged on any black person who would dare to exist outside of the gender binary. But the struggle for our lives doesn’t begin and end with these acts of murder. The stigmatization and criminalization of trans people persisting in the law enforcement system, furthers the oppression faced by folks like us. We must continue elevating the conversation around the social and institutional violence and, in doing so, include the ways black trans people are disproportionately and uniquely affected. Also, the media often enables the stigma and discrimination already endured by trans people, by portraying us as less than human. Instead of being honorably covered when targeted by hate or malice, many outlets misgender and slander trans women of color in death, using mug shots, birth names, incorrect pronouns. Even worse, they speculate on so-called justifications for their murders – such as sex work, homelessness, and drug use, which removes the accountability from where it belongs: on anti-trans violence and oppression.

In order to know where we are going, we have to remember that from which we come; that our history predates the Transatlantic Slave Trade. My whole life was changed when I traveled to Ferguson with the Black Lives Matter freedom rides, in the aftermath of Michael Brown’s murder. Witnessing the power and resilience of queer and trans black women especially, gave me hope that this iteration of the movement for black lives would not fail to center our most vulnerable and precious members. I do believe that everyone has a role to play in creating a more just and loving world, I just wish people would stay in their own lanes. Eradicating systemic oppression should be the challenge of those who benefit from it’s bounty. In other words, ending racism is the responsibility of white folks.

After a lifetime involved in the movement, I’m convinced that instead of trying to eradicate white supremacy our main focus should be creating the kind of world we want to inhabit. We can no longer afford to hide behind the tenants of non violence and respectability, if those values do not require us to protect black trans girls at all costs. I often think about the resiliency of Eisha Love whom I affectionately named “The Girl Who Lived.” Her case was eerily similar to Cece McDonald, who was also charged with a felony crime for surviving a racist and transphobic attack. Whereas every breath a black trans person takes is an act of resistance, our primary objective should be survival by any means necessary.

I dream a world in which all black lives matter. A world where we are not poisoned by the water and genetically modified foods. I dream a world where our black bodies are not criminalized because of sex work or HIV/AIDS. I dream a world where we have complete and total access to the entire universe without barriers or borders. I envision a world without prisons and without police. I envision a world that supplies our basic needs like, housing and medical care for all people. I dream a world centered around black women because the black woman is god and black girls are magic. The role of the black queer and trans prophets leading this struggle for liberation is to usher in a new world order full of love, beauty, compassion and empathy.

Our unique perspective of inhabiting the space between masculine and feminine further equipped us to seek truth and often overlooked perspectives. Before western concepts of gender bankrupted our social capital, we served as the mediators, the healers and the griots. It’s my hope that in the future black trans folks will be loved, respected, included, paid, healthy and free. Simply, it’s my hope that #BlackTransLivesMatter, too.

This critically-acclaimed, Oscar®-winning film (Best Foreign Language Film, 2006) is the erotic, emotionally-charged experience Lisa Schwarzbaum (Entertainment Weekly) calls "a nail-biter of a thriller!" Before the collapse of the Berlin Wall, East Germany's population was closely monitored by the State Secret Police (Stasi). Only a few citizens above suspicion, like renowned pro-Socialist playwright Georg Dreyman, were permitted to lead private lives. But when a corrupt government official falls for Georg's stunning actress-girlfriend, Christa, an ambitious Stasi policeman is ordered to bug the writer's apartment to gain incriminating evidence against the rival. Now, what the officer discovers is about to dramatically change their lives – as well as his – in this seductive political thriller Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) proclaims is "the best kind of movie: one you can't get out of your head."

Black Lives Matter, ACT UP and the Urgency of Violence and Death

There’s been lots of criticism from some progressives after Senator Bernie Sanders was shouted down by Black Lives Matters activists in Seattle recently, especially from supporters of Sanders’ presidential campaign. The basic tenor is that Sanders is a “friend” and thus protesting him is a waste of time, diverting from going after the “real” enemy. But much context is missing among the critics of Black Lives Matter, and, in one case in which a a comparison to the fiery AIDS activist group ACT UP is made, there’s a bit of unintentional historical revisionism that needs to be cleared up.

I was sitting in the crowd when former Maryland governor, Martin O’Malley, was interrupted by Black Lives Matter protestors in Phoenix at Netroots Nation last month. The activists took the stage and made the point that the issue of police violence and killings of black citizens weren’t being discussed adequately by progressives and political candidates. They demanded answers from O’Malley, and, directly afterward, from Bernie Sanders. It was disruptive, loud, tense and passionate.

And the first thing that came to my mind was ACT UP, a group of which I was a part, chairing its media committee back in the late ’80s, and which engaged in similar kinds of protest and disruption, including against Democratic presidential candidates. The urgency of the protest was similar as well: People are dying, and no one in power seems to be doing anything to stop it.

That’s why I was perplexed by at least one critic of Black Lives Matter suggesting that the group could take a page from ACT UP, which is portrayed as having engaged in a more productive form of disruption. Charles Pierce, a sharp, progressive writer I’ve followed for years and who does great work, criticized Black Lives Matter on Esquire.com for protesting Sanders in Seattle — preventing him from speaking — and like many other progressive critics he called the action “stupid” and “counterproductive” since Sanders basically supports the cause, unlike GOP presidential candidates. In a follow-up post he took back the word “counterproductive” but stuck by his general criticism and used ACT UP, which transformed the response by government, media and the health care establishment to HIV, as a model of activism which Black Lives Matter should follow.

The implied message was that ACT UP was successful by only targeting obvious enemies and not offending supposed allies. But that is simply not true. ACT UP was hated, despised, ridiculed and attacked by supposed friends — including many in the gay community itself — who claimed we were hitting the “wrong” targets, including our supposed allies, similar to the criticism Black Lives Matter is receiving now. The progressive Village Voice, born in the 1960s’ rebellion, was perhaps the biggest critic of ACT UP in the early years. According to some progressive critics there and elsewhere, we were fascists or Stalinists who silenced people with angry and confrontational protests. Or we were alienating the very people we were supposed to bring in.

The same was true of the criticism of the tactics of the various offshoots of ACT UP in the early ’90s, such as Queer Nation, which focused on the violence against gays and engaged in guerrilla actions to promote queer visibility, staging kiss-ins and wheat-pasting posters around major cities which revealed the sexual orientation of closeted prominent Hollywood and political figures.

And there were virulent attacks on OutWeek magazine, another ACT UP offshoot, founded by ACT UP members, which was at the center of the so-called “outing” movement (and where I was an editor). The writer Fran Leibowitz, a darling of liberal intellectuals, said of OutWeek, “It’s damaging, it’s immoral, its McCarthyism, it’s terrorism, its cannibalism, it’s beneath contempt.”

ACT UP regularly protested that supposed friend of liberals, The New York Times, and ACT UP activists literally hijacked the set of Dan Rather’s live broadcast on the CBS Evening News, flashing a message opposing the first Iraq war and calling instead for money for AIDS research. The group disrupted trading at the New York Stock Exchange, unfurling a banner on the floor, invaded St. Patrick’s Cathedral with a civil disobedience action against the Catholic Church and shouted down Democratic presidential candidates, like Bill Clinton, getting promises from them on fighting the AIDS epidemic.

Years later, people herald ACT UP for the work it did, but they all seem to forget that in the moment there was enormous tension between the group and the larger progressive community — as well with the larger gay community — as people accused ACT UP of alienating allies by being confrontational. And that has actually been true of every protest movement for every cause: In the moment they’re criticized, while later they’re heralded. Black Lives Matter is doing exactly what it should be doing. And it is getting exactly the response it should be getting, bringing attention in every way possible to an urgent life and death issue.

Here’s How Two Women Changed The Lives Of LGBT Families In Alabama Forever

In towns large and small all across our country, there are parents that RaiseAChild.US considers to be true heros. Such is the case with Cari Searcy and Kim McKeand of Mobile, Alabama, who together fought an intense nine-year battle to improve the landscape for all families in their state. In this Huffington Post Gay Voices RaiseAChild.US “Let Love Define Family™ series installment, contributing writer Beth Hallstrom shares their riveting story of courage and justice.

Imagine sitting at your critically ill son’s bedside with your wife, watching the life ebb from the infant’s tiny body. Your baby is losing weight and desperately needs a feeding tube to sustain him until he receives an open-heart surgery, his only hope for survival, that is still two weeks away.

Your wife, upset and emotional, is unable to learn how to insert the tube. She is bullied by nurses and becomes hysterical so you step in and volunteer to take her place. But, because you are also a woman and living in a state with arcane marriage and adoption laws, you are denied. You are told, “You are not his mother.”

Cari Searcy and Kim McKeand of Mobile, Alabama, didn’t have to imagine this nightmare, because they had to live it. First they were stunned, then they were furious. And then they waged war against those arcane laws and changed history when they won.

Cari and Kim’s story began like countless other couples’. Natives of small towns in East Texas, they met in college, fell in love and decided to make a life together. A visit to Mobile enamored them with the Azalea City. They moved there in 2000, bought a home and began planning their family.

Kim chose to be the birth mother with the help of a donor and loved being pregnant, Cari recalled. “I always wanted to be a mother, but I never saw myself pregnant. It worked out perfectly for both of us,” she said.

In December 2005, their son, Khaya, was born and doctors soon discovered a large hole in his heart. The defect was repairable through open-heart surgery, but not until the baby was three months old.

According to Cari, “When Khaya was two months old, he quit gaining weight. He was hospitalized and the doctors told us his heart was working so hard it was like he was on a treadmill all the time. He was just not receiving enough calories. They told us Kim had to stop breastfeeding and we had to put him on a high calorie formula but he continued to lose weight. The feeding tube was our only choice.”

Before Khaya could come home from the hospital, his mothers — or, from the nursing staff’s viewpoint, his mother — needed to learn to insert, remove and clean the feeding tube.

“Kim was so upset and became even more emotional when they tried to force her to do it. I asked them to teach me instead and there was dead silence in the room. One of the nurses put her hands on her hips and asked me, ‘Are you the legal parent? Do you have legal documentation?’ When I told them no, they told me they couldn’t teach me because I was not his mother. That’s when I started to burn,” Cari said.

Fortunately, Khaya’s cardiologist was making rounds and she demanded to know what was happening around Khaya’s hospital crib. Appalled, she cleared the room, began to cry and proceeded to teach Cari about the feeding tube.

“She was a godsend,” Cari said.

Cari recalled that it was at that moment that she realized she had no legal standing in Khaya’s or Kim’s lives. Despite the years together, the house and the family, the dog and the cat, she was nothing in the relationship.

“I’m sure straight people aren’t asked for paperwork by hospital staff. No one is asked to produce a marriage license or adoption decree; they take it on faith that the person is the spouse or the parent. “

“It really opened my eyes as to how important that paperwork is and, the next week, we visited our lawyer to begin the process of me adopting Khaya. We figured it would be uncomplicated, an open and shut case. Boy, were we wrong!” Cari said.

The first denial of Cari’s adoption petition was in 2006. Two more followed as Cari and Kim’s legal odyssey took them from Probate Court in Mobile County to a 2014 federal lawsuit seeking to end Alabama’s ban on same sex marriage. The couple’s case also sought to require the state to recognize marriages performed elsewhere, including their own, which was held in California in 2008.

“The only way I could adopt was to make the state marriage law unconstitutional. We felt we had a pretty narrow and easily decided case in federal court because it was not right for me to be unable to adopt my own son,” Cari explained.

While numerous people — gay, straight, singles and couples — cheered Cari and Kim on, they oddly received little support from the LGBT legal community.

“We were told not to push the issue because it might set back the effort to legalize gay marriage nationwide. Meanwhile, our son is growing up and I’m not legally his parent. It hit me that somebody has to do something,” Cari said.

Victory finally arrived in January when a federal judge struck down Alabama’s law but was quickly put on hold when elected officials dragged their feet, waiting to see how the Supreme Court would rule on same-sex marriage.

“The Probate Court judge, Judge Don Davis, refused to rule on our latest adoption petition until the Supreme Court ruled, even after we won the federal suit that said the law can no longer be used against us. So, in March, we filed suit against Judge Davis. He eventually recused himself and assigned the case to another judge. He never looked us in the eye and made comments that made us feel uncomfortable,” Cari noted.

After the Supreme Court ruled in June that marriage equality was the law of the land, Cari and Kim’s marriage was recognized. On Friday, July 24, the family stood before Visiting Judge James Reid from adjacent Baldwin County as Cari officially became Khaya’s legal parent.

“It was amazing. It was very surreal when Judge Reid said it was in the best interest of the child to have two legal parents. I broke down and got so emotional. His words confirmed what we’ve known all along: that I’ve been Khaya’s parent his whole life. It was great to be in front of a judge who looked as us like he looks at everyone else,” Cari said.

While the family has been in the spotlight for nine years, Cari said she and Kim shielded Khaya from much of the publicity and attention but, after the adoption hearing, he gave his first media interview.

“He thinks it’s all pretty cool,” Cari said. “It’s been no big deal to him because the case has literally been going on his whole life, but I think Friday opened his eyes to what it all means and how many people’s lives will change because of him.”

Next for the family is expansion through adopting one or two more children. Cari said they have begun to investigate adoption agencies and are eager to give Khaya siblings.

“There were tons of times we thought maybe it just wasn’t meant to be but then someone would come up to us and tell us to keep going for it, so we did. This is America and we shouldn’t have to fight for equal rights,” Cari said.

“It’s amazing that our son made history. Our case helped thousands and thousands of families across our state. It restored our pride in Alabama. We love to hear Khaya talking to his friends when he tells them, ‘We helped change the world.’ He is so proud. And so are we.”

News in Brief: New Statewide Education Standards Require Teachers To Forever Change Lives Of 30% Of Students

SPRINGFIELD, IL—In an effort to hold classroom instructors more accountable, the Illinois State Board of Education unveiled new statewide education standards Friday that require public school teachers to forever change the lives of at least 30 percent of their students. “Under our updated educator evaluation policy, teachers must make an unforgettable, lifelong impact on at least three of every 10 students and instill a love of learning in them that lasts the rest of their lives,” said chairman James Meeks, adding that based on the annual assessments, if 30 percent of students don’t recall a particular teacher’s name when asked to identify the most influential and inspiring person in their lives, that instructor would be promptly dismissed. “We are imposing these standards to make certain that a significant proportion of students in any given classroom can someday look back and say, ‘That teacher changed the course of …

Black Lives Matter or Black Life Matters?

Black Lives Matter, But More Importantly…

Recently, the chant of black people in response to the unwarranted, unjustified and downright unacceptable deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of unlawful officers have become “Black Lives Matter.” We’ve seen the handwritten signage adorned by hands of different colors all across this country and abroad. We’ve heard the chant turn into a roar and the roar into a rant. It’s a proclamation of sorts, “Black Lives Matter.” Which they do. But I challenge us to make a change to that statement which would ultimately change who we are and who people perceive us to be.

Black lives matter, but more importantly, black “life” matters. Now before you nonchalantly attempt to dismiss my suggestive statement as if it means the same thing or that it’s so miniscule of a change that it doesn’t mean anything different at all, consider what I’m saying. Black “Life” Matters. Repeat it again, Black “Life” Matters. And yet again, Black “Life” Matters.

Black lives matter is completely different from black life matters and it provokes a different sense of responsibility. Maybe it’s just me, but when I hear “black lives matter” it sounds as if we’re trying to convince others that we should matter to them. And if we mattered to them, they’d be more thoughtful, considerate and conscious of their approach, dealings and interactions with us. They’d see us in a different perspective, a different light. “Black Lives Matter” sounds like a demonstrative response to actions by others who have denigrated the lives of black people, most of whom we don’t even know personally. The onus is purposely and intentionally shifted to someone other than who the focus should be on. “Black Lives Matter” encompasses a lot, but nothing at the same time, because it’s a broad statement with no specificity or clear inclination on exactly whose life matters. Are we only referring to the lives that’s been lost at the hands of rogue police officers? Are we talking about the lives cut short by the hands of other black people? Are we also talking about the children we abort?

If “Black Life Matters” then that would incorporate all black people, our culture, our past, present and future, our ancestors, the preservation of our history, our neighborhoods, our communities, our schools, our children, our elders, our incarcerated brothers and sisters, our people victimized by societal ills, the sick, the forgotten, “unborn” embryos, all black life, starting with one, your very own. That would allow us to address our critical issues from an individualistic, but ultimately, cohesive perspective.

You see, as my Pastor PM Smith always says, “you change the world one mind, one heart, one life, one home, one community and one nation at a time.” It’s way more deep than just the plurality and singular usage of the word when it comes to Black “Lives” Matter versus Black “Life” Matters. It’s much deeper than just a slogan or a soundbite or even a trademark that one can screen-print onto tee shirts and make a profit from selling to the people who are supposed to matter. Black “Life” Matters is an affirmation that requires you to act as if you believe it to be true. Black “Life” Matters is a personal statement and testament. And once we start to believe and exhibit truly that Black “Life” Matters we will no longer have to spend countless hours trying to convince others that our lives are valuable. #blacklifematters

Access to Care Is a Way to Save Transgender Youth’s Lives Today

So far this year, the transgender community has seen a mind-boggling amount of violence and loss.

Whether it is Penny Proud in New Orleans, Louisiana, or Bri Golec in Akron, Ohio, in each case the circumstances are eerily similar: Trans women losing their lives unnecessarily as victims of brutal, violent crimes. Other high profile cases of suicides among transgender individuals, or cases of discrimination suffered by transgender people in either housing or the workplace have captured the nation’s attention by sharing the challenges that transgender people face by being marginalized, othered, harassed, hurt and misunderstood. Collectively these cases have created a rise in social media posts with a poignant and all-too-familiar hash tag, #translivesmatter.

Among all of this loss, it is the Leelah Alcorn case, and others like hers, that I cannot seem to shake from my head as a pediatrician. You may recall that Leelah was the 17-year-old transgender woman who chose to, or was driven to, end her own life. At the time, the case garnered national headlines with the main focus on Leelah’s public social media posts in the weeks preceding her death. These haunting posts discussed her negative experiences with conversion therapy to supposedly “cure” her of her transgender identity.

However, the undiscussed aspect of the Leelah Alcorn case is that access to healthcare, particularly for gender-affirming medical therapies may have saved her life.

Re-read some of her social media posts before she took her life, “I can’t wait until I am 18 to begin transitioning,” and “I can’t wait one more day.” These posts point to her inability to access appropriate healthcare as a potential immediate precipitating factor in her death; one that may have been 100 percent preventable.

I suspect this aspect of the story was not pursued with vigor out of respect to Leelah’s grieving parents, who the media chose to, understandably, not challenge with respect to the rationale behind the decisions they may have made or not made for their child. And it certainly is not my intention to unnecessarily stir the pot, create drama or inflict more pain for on the Alcorn family.

However, there is a larger educational point that needs to be said loud and clear for the benefit of other families and for transgender or gender nonconforming youth. That message is simple: For transgender youth, access to health care services saves lives.

Truth is that in many centers, including the Gender and Sex Development Program that I co-direct at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, adolescents like Leelah shouldn’t have to wait until the age of 18 to begin engaging in gender-affirming care. Youth should and do have the opportunity to begin the process of transitioning in a way that allows them to live life as their authentic self.

Our Gender Program’s multidisciplinary team and other programs models across the country are complete with pediatricians, nurses, child development specialists, mental health providers and endocrinologists all committed to working with youth and families who are seeking advice or guidance in confronting the challenges of raising a gender non-conforming or transgender child. In many instances these individuals are not familiar with sources of support in the community or options related to medical therapies and interventions.

The Endocrine Society and World Professional Association of Transgender Health Professionals (WPATH) have what are now considered widely-used clinical care guidelines that support the use of pubertal blocking medications in certain gender non-conforming children or early adolescents based upon pubertal and developmental age. They also support the initiation of cross sex hormones in transgender young people as young as 16 years of age (and in some case and some centers even younger).

It is not unusual for teams such as ours to encounter parents or families of children that do not initially support these medical interventions — often due to a denial about the child’s authentic gender identity, a lack of education about the safety of potential medical interventions or a deeply rooted personal, religious or cultural objection. In the overwhelming majority of these cases (but certainly not all), we can work effectively with families and individuals to find a common path moving forward, or at the very least finding a path that ensures the safety and well-being of the child or adolescent.

Centers like ours strive to dispel myths that label being transgender as an affectation or pathology as opposed to the stable identity it represents for most individuals. We also work with families to see their children through a broader and more realistic lens than the spectrum of dysfunction that is too often the focus of negative media attention.

For, while it remains true that too many transgender youth are the victims of hate crimes, and too many become homeless or contemplate suicide, this spectrum of dysfunction does not capture the strength, perseverance, pride and resilience that in my professional opinion more accurately captures the spirit of the young transgender people I see each and every day.

Alongside educating families, it is important to educate the adolescents themselves about their individual rights with regard to medical decision-making particularly as it relates to mature minor statutes on the state level or legal emancipation as a last resort for those who may be at the point of crisis or self-harm.

In essence, for many individuals like Leelah, access to one of the many centers across the country that care for gender non-conforming children or adolescents could literally be a lifeline to a future as their authentic selves.

And most importantly, access to care at these sites can save lives starting today.

Spider-Gwen Lives! Spider-Man’s Dead Girlfriend Is A Kick-Ass Superhero Now

It’s been 42 years since Spider-Man’s girlfriend, Gwen Stacy, died in the final pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #121 — a death that changed comic book history forever and was quite possibly Marvel’s first admission that superheroes can’t save everyone.

But what if she wasn’t dead? What if, in an alternate universe, Peter Parker died and Gwen Stacy became a badass superhero with all of Spider-Man’s powers and a heck of a lot more angst?

Behold: Spider-Gwen.

Spider-Gwen Exclusive Preview

Spider-Gwen #1 hit the shelves on Wednesday, satisfying a longtime demand for a spinoff that establishes Gwen as a superhero, Kotaku reports.

READ USA TODAY’S IN-DEPTH REPORT ON SPIDER-GWEN

“It’s a rare character that gets the public outcry that Spider-Gwen got,” senior editor Nick Lowe said before the book’s release. “From the sell-out of Gwen’s first appearance to the groundswell on Twitter we’re excited to bring more Spider-Gwen into the world with the creators who started it all!”

To be sure, the Internet has already fallen in love with the new heroine. Some are just happy to have a strong female lead in the Spider-verse. Kotaku and IGN give a lot of credit to the character design, focusing on her cool new duds:

“The enthusiastic reaction to Spider-Gwen is due in part to a great character design. Her costume — which brilliantly fuses negative space ideas, high-contrast coloring and could-actually-exist practicality — is one of the best riffs on the Spider-Man motif in decades.”

The first issue is certainly receiving good reviews, but its success remains to be seen. Is Spider-Man out? Is Spider-Gwen the new hotness? Will Emma Stone play her when the movie inevitably comes out?

Only time will tell.

This Is The Youngest Davos Participant, And He’s Helping Save Lives With An App

Age is just a number — just ask Alain Nteff.

At 22, Nteff — the youngest participant at this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland — is fighting for moms and their babies in Central Africa.

He’s the founder of Gifted Mom — a mobile health platform that provides a variety of programs to moms and pregnant women, including maternal education, access to family planning and contraception services and information on when and how to vaccinate children safely. His innovation spurred the economic forum to name him a Global Shaper for 2015.

In 2012, the Cameroonian visited a hospital in his home country that had lost 17 babies in just one week. The startling figure prompted him to find solutions.

“I started doing research and talking to health personnel,” Nteff said in a video uploaded to YouTube by the Anzisha Prize — an annual award recognizing African entrepreneurs which he won last year. “I noticed that … pregnant women and infants are literally dying from preventable causes.”

Nteff’s home country is in dire need of change regarding the health of mothers and their babies. In Cameroon, 148 infants die per every 1,000 live births, giving it the 18th highest mortality rate for children under 5 years old in the world, according to UNICEF. The organization states Cameroon’s maternal mortality rate is also “alarmingly high,” at 670 per 100,000 births.

But thanks to Nteff, progress is being made.

There have been more than 500 downloads of his app using locally made phones, according to the Anzisha Prize. Services provided by Gifted Mom have helped boost antenatal attendance (the rate of pregnant women receiving medical attention) by 20 percent in 15 rural communities.

By the end of this year, Nteff hopes to help 50,000 pregnant women and mothers. By 2017, he wants to have helped 5 million.

“My dream is to see an Africa that is well-informed about their medical resources and free of maternal and infant death,” Nteff said in the video.

I'm Lexi Carmichael, geek extraordinaire. I spend my days stopping computer hackers at the National Security Agency. My nights? Those I spend avoiding my mother and eating cereal for dinner. Even though I work for a top-secret agency, I've never been in an exciting car chase, sipped a stirred (not shaken) martini, or shot a poison dart from an umbrella. Until today, that is, when two gun-toting thugs popped up in my life and my best friend disappeared. So, I've enlisted the help of the Zimmerman twins—the reclusive architects of America's most sensitive electronic networks—to help me navigate a bewildering maze of leads to find her. Along the way, my path collides with a sexy government agent and a rich, handsome lawyer, both of whom seem to have the hots for me. Hacking, espionage, sexy spy-men—it's a geek girl's dream come true. If it weren't for those gun-toting thugs… 112,000 words

The 12 Baby Products That Save Our Adult Lives

This Mother’s Day, we hope all of the mommas get the pampering and relaxation they deserve. Whether that’s a mimosa-filled brunch or a day at the spa, we hope you get some good old TLC.

While you celebrate motherhood, stop and think about what your kids have given you — love, laughter, happiness and beauty products. Yes, we meant to say that.

It seems that the secret behind soft skin and getting ALL of your makeup off is hiding in your kids’ products. From baby oil to nipple cream, you can fix your adult problems with a trip down the baby care aisle.

Here are the baby product formulas you should look for the next time you need a style or beauty remedy.

baby prod collage

For Dry Skin:
All we ever want in life is skin as soft as a baby’s bottom. Well, that probably means that we should be using their skincare regimens, which include baby lotions and washes that are fresh and happy-inducing. And, if you slather some baby oil on your body while it’s still damp from the shower, you won’t have dry, flaky skin (but really, who ever wants that??).

If it’s night time and you’re winding down, try ones with lavender and if you want some added hydration, incorporate some aloe, cocoa butter and gel formulas into your life. Who knew a baby would inspire our “so fresh and so clean” moments?

For Redness:
Three words: diaper rash cream. What could cure unwanted redness more than a formula that’s specifically for red, itchy patches? And if you want a slightly lighter formula, say for bug bites or face blemishes, try Aden + Anais Mum Bub ointment.

For facial redness, as a result of a breakout or rash of some kind, make a DIY mask that will calm down that itchy mess.

Take half a pack of Aveeno’s eczema bath treatment and mix it in with a little bit of water — you don’t want it too thick, but the consistency should be dense enough to spread over your face nice and evenly. After mixing, apply to your whole face (or just the irritated parts), and wait about five to ten minutes. If you want to make these masks all the time, but don’t want to shell out a lot of money, order ground colloidal oatmeal, it’s an awesome active ingredient that soothes your skin.

For Chapped Lips:
This one might be a little weird, but bear with us. The key to shiny, supple, soft and any other delectable adjective, lips may be nipple cream. Although this isn’t exactly for the baby as much is it’s for a breastfeeding momma, it is “safe for baby,” which means it’s safe for us, too.

Apply a good amount before you go to sleep, and when you wake up the next morning wipe off the dead skin. It might be a little sticky, so roll it around between your fingertips before applying. Also, for added moisture throughout the day, keep some Baby Aquaphor handy.

For Washing Your Delicates:
Items like lingerie, bras, you know “the intimates,” will hold up well if you hand wash them in baby shampoo. As our Black Voices Beauty and Style editor Julee Wilson says, “It’s gentle and makes everything smell so yummy!”

For Hair Troubles:
If you haven’t heard this one, your life is about to change. Instead of splurging on a fancy dry shampoo, get rid of oily residue with baby powder. Just pat your roots with as much powder as you need, but watch out, that stuff can get messy. With a comb, flesh out the white as to work it within your strands so it doesn’t look like dandruff.

And for our curly-haired girls out there, your detangling needs might be met with kids detangling spray. It won’t burn your eyes, so no tears for you!

For Removing Makeup:
Eyeliner, and mascara especially, can be hard to take off of your eyes at night. But, baby oil is slick enough to take that black (or brown) right off of your lashes. Swab a Q-tip into the oil, and gently rub it against your eyelids and waterlines. Just massage the leftover oil around your eyes.

Additionally, if you run out of makeup remover wipes, baby wipes could be a good alternative. We recommend going for fragrance-free or those made for sensitive skin — also, the baby versions tend to be a cheaper dupe if you don’t want to shell out for more pricey wipes.

For Smooth Shaves:
Yet another use for baby oil! While your legs will be super smooth, if you apply baby oil after shaving, you can also shave WITH IT. Yep, that’s right — slather it all up your gams and slide the razor up accordingly. You’ll moisturize and get rid of stubble (or long hairs) at the same damn time.

Do you use any baby products for your daily routine? Let us know!
