How Many Lives Did Gun Control Laws Save in Las Vegas? (Answer: Probably Lots)

I’m pro-gun. I say that up front because your beliefs about my intentions will color how you see this post. My intention is to be objective. You can be the judge.

The Vegas gunman used bump stocks on semi-automatic rifles. Those were totally legal. They are also a poor choice of weapons, or so I am told by gun experts. In fact, they are so inaccurate at the distance involved in the Vegas incident that professional snipers say Paddock could have done more damage with a single-shot weapon and some aiming.

The gun experts I talked to (informally) also agree that the shooter would have killed more than a hundred additional people had he used a fully-automatic weapon. You can legally buy an automatic weapon that was made prior to 1986, for about $ 15-20K. The shooter was a millionaire, and he seemed to know a lot about guns. He would have known a fully-automatic rifle is designed to not jam the way his bump stock rifles did. He would have known they fire more bullets per second and more accurately. The death toll would have been much higher had the Vegas gunman used the right weapon.

He knew a fully automatic rifle would be more lethal than a bump stock rifle.

He was rich enough to afford the fully automatic weapon.

He had months to plan and prepare.

He was smart.

And yet he didn’t use a fully-automatic weapon in the attack.

The probable reason is that a fully-automatic weapon is harder to obtain and it raises some flags. I believe even private transactions with those weapons require some government paperwork.

I’m speculating, of course, but it seems to me that the ban on fully-automatic weapons did, over time, create enough friction for the Vegas gunman that he decided to settle for relatively worse weapons.

Ask a gun expert how many more people would be dead if automatic weapons were as easy to procure as bump stocks. My estimate of a hundred extra dead in Vegas is probably low.

Gun control apparently worked in this case, at least to an important degree. The tragedy could have been far bigger. A little bit of friction for obtaining a fully automatic weapon probably saved lives. We can’t know for sure what was in the mind of a madman, but we do know that any kind of friction causes some people to change plans. That’s probably what happened here.

My hypothesis is that crazy people will use whatever weapon is the most effective killing device they can obtain at acceptable cost (friction). Gun laws introduce friction. They are not intended to stop every type of crime or to deter every type of criminal. But it looks like they helped a bit in Vegas. Had there been no friction to procuring fully automatic weapons, it is likely the Vegas gunman would have used them. Why wouldn’t he?

If you want to read my argument for why I am pro-gun, see the end of this prior post.

It might be a good idea to pre-order my new book, Win Bigly, at this special page, because you get a bonus chapter by email. You’ll like it.

Lots of Beautiful Hair at Teen Choice, Some With Splash of Color

Teen Choice delivered! Rita Ora added a light breeze of pink to her signature platinum blonde tresses and Britney Spears, honored as a style icon, splashed her ends with blue and purple to create what might even be described as an ombre.

All the stars collecting awards in Los Angeles for best movies, acting and music were, of course, beautiful. Most of them stuck with recent trends of natural looking cuts and colors with subtle, soft color transitions. We didn’t really see any big departures from what’s been popular.

Winning an award as a TV comedy actress, “Glee” star Lea Michele stayed with her long layers and caramel highlights. What can you say? It works!

Teen Choice for best TV drama went to the cast of “Pretty Little Liars.” Accepting the award were cast stars including Lucy Hale, who does a lot of long brown layered wavy hair, recently went short with a bob, but then had extensions to do a long ponytail in a cool, slick-back look to accept her award with other cast members. Also going with a center part and slick-back look from the “Pretty Little Liars” cast were Janel Parrish and Shay Mitchell.

Actress and singer Zendaya (star of Disney’s “Undercover KC”) went with a ballerina bun high on top to walk the Teen Choice blue carpet. She changes the style of her dark, brown hair often, and the results are nearly always fantastic.

So, no new trends emerged but we saw lots of beautiful hair. Love those kids! Love change!

Fran Drescher Says She Had Lots Of Sex With Her Gay Ex-Husband

Sex was not lacking in Fran Drescher’s marriage to her ex-husband, who eventually came out as gay.

The comedian was honored Tuesday in New York City at the Stonewall Community Foundation’s Vision Awards, a gala that raises money for the LGBTQ community. While there, she talked about her relationship with Peter Jacobson, who she was married to for more than 20 years.

“I have a gay art dealer, a gay dermatologist — not to mention my hairdresser. I have a gay ex-husband!” she joked, per the New York Post. “People always say to me [about him], ‘How did you not know?’ He loves decorating and fashion and clothes, but we actually did have sex a lot. I didn’t know at the time, though, that in his mind he was f–king the bartender at Olive Garden.”

Drescher and Jacobson began dating in high school and married in 1978. They divorced in 1999. Ten years later, Drescher revealed Jacobson is gay.

“We always used to think that we must be having better sex that our friends, you know, because he was a very sexual man,” Drescher, with Jacobson by her side, told Oprah during an interview a few years ago.

The 57-year-old star married entrepreneur Shiva Ayyadurai in September.

BookCon and Book Expo Of America In New York — One City, Two Events and LOTS of Books

The Book Expo Of America (BEA) and BookCon 2.0 just ended this weekend in New York City. If you love books, you should have been there. Actually, if you love movies or TV shows, you should have been there too, since lots of your favorite movies and TV shows are based on books or spin-off books. And if you love sports or food or astronomy or gardening or mysteries or history or just about anything else, you should have been there. An app? Pshaw! They’ve got a much better book about that.

The BEA is where the publishing industry talks to itself. Editors and writers and publicists and librarians and bookstore owners and marketers all get together and take casual meetings and attend panels and go cheer on authors so they can jazz each other up about the many books just out or coming up this summer and fall.

BookCon is where the publishing industry talks to the world, offering more panels (but FUN ones) and author signings and movie screenings. It’s like ComicCon’s smarter kid brother. And a big star at both of them is John Green, the best-selling author of The Fault In Our Stars and Looking For Alaska and Paper Towns, which has been turned into a movie that opens July 24th. Green chatted with BookFilter and seemed positively abashed about having no new book on the horizon but perked up considerably when talking about the movie and public education and his passion for soccer. (For those not following the FIFA scandal, “Blatter” is the name of the head of that troubled org.) Check it out:

And here’s the trailer to the movie.

If you haven’t read Paper Towns, don’t fear — it’s virtually cancer free and filled with witty dialogue teens only wish they could spout out on command. Green’s a rock star because he does naturally what so many authors are attempting: using social media to stay in touch with their fans. It works for Green because he’s not doing it to promote his books; he’s doing it because he loves it. Check out his website, and Crash Course, terrific online videos about history and math and science and literature and more, all designed to be great resources for students, teachers and anyone who wants to learn something fun. (Anyone, that is, except the Mongols.) John and his brother Hank created it and have now partnered with PBS and hope to make educational resources available for free to everyone around the world.

As you can see, Green’s multi-media career is going full bore. But BookCon is just getting started. The big Comic-Cons reach more than 100,000 people. This year was the second edition of BookCon and they’re hoping to hit 15,000 to 20,000. Yet with care and smart moves, the sky is the limit. Book tours have become increasingly difficult for publishers to fund. So instead of sending out each other individually, why not bring the fans to them? I can easily imagine BookCons on the east and west coast, north and south some four times a year: every season has great books, every season a big movie or TV show linked to a book is getting launched or enjoying a new season, and every big name author like Judy Blume and Stephen King and David Sedaris and Diana Gabaldon and John Grisham and yes John Green can draw passionate fans. With them as anchors, a lot of newer authors these name brands respect and support can reach tons of fans all at once. Brien McDonald, the show manager of BookCon 2015 for ReedPOP talked with me about what was happening at this year’s event and their plans for the future. (The sound is iffy, but that’s because unlike John Green, I’m pretty new to all this video-ing stuff.)

For me, the BEA was pretty sleepy this year. In years past, people would trundle around luggage on wheels so they could pile up on galleys, the advance copies of big releases. Now with so many books available as e-galleys online, that intense drive to “get” a certain book right away so you could read it and judge for yourself just wasn’t there. The aisles seemed less crowded — especially in the vast area where a huge contingent from China laid out elaborate displays of books published in China and Chinese books they hoped to promote in the US. It was impressive, but with faux grass and small shrubbery in the middle of mini-plazas they’d created, the displays looked like quiet public gardens for private contemplation whenever you stumbled into that area of the show floor.

BookCon was more exciting. The fans weren’t nearly as overwhelming as the aisle-clogging crowd at Comic-Con in the fall But they were just as passionate. Starry celebs included Mindy Kaling, BJ Novak, Jason Segal, Judy Blume and R.L. Stine of Goosebumps fame. But just as many fans were excited to see vloggers turned authors like Connor Franta or attending panels like the Rotten Tomatoes event where the audience squared off with critics like Joe Neumaier of the New York Daily News and voted on the best and worst movies based on books. (I know Neumaier and happily booed when he said The Golden Compass was good. And kudos to the young woman who amusingly and correctly said the worst book into film was The Cat In The Hat.)

The event still needs a lot of TLC to grow. I wish the floors were filled with indie sellers just like Comic-Con. Specialized booksellers and self-published authors and vendors of pulp fiction collectables and contests and give-aways (a lot more give-aways) would help give fans a lot more to do than roam the aisles of booths publishers mounted for BEA and then mostly abandoned once BookCon began. BookCon is such a no-brainer — people spend some $ 16 billion a year on books (not counting textbooks and the like or that number would be much bigger). Every season brings great books. And every season deserves an event with a lot of hoopla to let people know those books are coming out. Next year BookCon takes place in Chicago. Hopefully some day soon it’ll come to a city near you.

Thanks for reading. Michael Giltz is the founder and CEO of BookFilter, a book lover’s best friend. Head to BookFilter if you want to find more great picks in every category. You’ll discover smart picks by our crackerjack staff, not crowd-sourced reviews saying — yet again — hey, you should read “The Girl On A Train!” (I mean, you should, but you knew that already, didn’t you?) You’ll know what just came out in stores, get great ideas for what to read next or find a smart and affordable gift in every category. If you’re a super-fan of cookbooks or history or mystery or you name it, come to BookFilter and you can browse through lists of every release in every category and do your own filtering!

Note: Michael Giltz is provided with free galleys and final copies of books in the hope that he’ll review or write a story on them. He receives far more copies of books than he could ever cover.

A-Sides with Jon Chattman: Some Pure Adulterated Joy with Morning Parade & Lots of "Love" for Matrimony

“Alienation” isn’t just a term that best describes what it’s like to be a New York Mets fan. It’s also the title of one of this year’s best tracks by one of alt-rock’s best rising acts. Nearly two years ago, Morning Parade burst onto the scene faster than a cliched phrase like “burst onto the scene” appears in print. Their single “Headlights” (off their self-titled debut), was an alt-rock hit, and stayed on the Billboard alternative radio charts for an amazing 37 weeks.

Following the success of that LP and a tour that took them all over the world like Carmen Santiago, the UK five-piece are back their second full-length album, Pure Adulterated Joy, which features ten songs that sonically and lyrically hit your heart in its gut. How’s that for a visual? Their aforementioned first single, “Alienation,” is an inspirational albeit slightly ironic track which alt-rock radio has already embraced and iTunes recently selected as a “Single of the Week.” The band will tour extensively for the better part of the summer and will be making the festival rounds as they did in support of their first record. The band returned to A-Sides at the Music Conservatory of Westchester to play two songs, and sit down for a chat. Enjoy it you will.

For an exclusive A-Sides performance of “Reality Dream,” click here.

Like Morning Parade, Matrimony make music that doesn’t just get stuck in your head, it stays with your heart and soul a bit. The band’s Columbia Records full-length debut – Montibello Memories – came out this month and it’s – in a word – folkin’ fantastic. OK, that’s two words and a terrible pun. Anyway, these North Carolina folk rockers are poised for stardom and will probably achieve it by the time you’ve finished reading this. Fronted by husband and wife Jimmy Brown and Ashlee Hardee Brown along with Ashlee’s brothers Jordan and CJ Hardee (cue Sly & the Family Stone’s “Family Affair”), the band blend many genres together for a cohesive, unique sound that comes off as folk, country and rock at the same time.

Matrimony will be on tour all summer long, and will continue to build on their past EP successes, which propelled them to NPR Mountain Stage, Music City Roots, and landed them on the Carrie soundtrack last year. Before their show at Mercury Lounge in NYC, the band performed a pair of tracks and sat down for an A-Sides chat (filmed by shootmepeter.com). It was rad. You are rad for reading and watching. Let’s all be rad together, and afterwards, let’s stop using the word “rad” because it was played out in the 1980s and is again now. Boom.

For an exclusive performance of “Lucky Man,” click here.

_________

About A-Sides Music

Jon Chattman’s “A-Sides Music” series was established in August 2011 and usually features artists (established or not) from all genres performing a track, and discussing what it means to them. This informal series focuses on the artist making art in a low-threatening, extremely informal (sometimes humorous) way. No bells, no whistles — just the music performed in a random, low-key setting followed by an unrehearsed chat. In an industry where everything often gets overblown and over manufactured, I’m hoping this is refreshing. Artists have included: fun, Rob Zombie, Pharrell Williams, Courtney Love, American Authors, Imagine Dragons, Gary Clark Jr., and more! A-Sides theme written and performed by Blondfire.
