Madison Square Boys & Girls Club Luncheon Raises Over $200,000

NEW YORK — A raft of well-heeled Manhattan socialites gathered at the Metropolitan Club next to Central Park on Tuesday for the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club’s annual Style of Life luncheon — and they certainly didn’t forget to bring their purses with them.
The fundraiser, which was held in the club’s ornate ballroom facing Fifth Avenue, raised over $ 200,000 through a silent auction and raffle, double the amount seen in 2017. Donated prizes up for grabs this year included a luxury Belize vacation, a Canyon Ranch getaway and a Peloton.
Among the 200 guests in attendance were SoulCycle chief executive officer Melanie Whelan, who made a beeline for guest of honor Sam Kass, the former White House chef and senior policy adviser for nutrition under the Obama administration, to no doubt chat all things health and fitness.
Kass told WWD that his involvement in the charity, which organizes extracurricular programs for children and teens in many of New York’s most underserved communities, stretched back to his time at the White House.
“I know how important their work is in that critical gap in the afternoons where many of the kids go astray — not just for health, but everything else as well,”

Bill Clinton Pinch Hits for Chelsea at Mother’s Day Luncheon

When the pinch hitter at the 40th annual Mother’s Day Luncheon happens to be Bill Clinton, the 42nd U.S. president, one can’t be too disappointed.
His daughter, Chelsea Clinton, one of the recipients of the Outstanding Mother Awards, was stuck in Omaha, Neb., and couldn’t get a plane out, so her father happily obliged to accept the award on her behalf.
Clinton told some endearing stories about his daughter, who is vice chair of the Clinton Foundation.
“Here’s what I’d like you to know about my child. In some ways she had a remarkably privileged upbringing though we weren’t wealthy by conventional standards until I got out of the White House. I had the lowest net worth of any president ever elected since World War II. I was governor for 12 years, but it was always tough,” said Clinton. He explained that Chelsea started reading the newspaper at six years old and he was in a very hot reelection campaign, and she read things that people were saying about him.
“So I talked to Hillary at breakfast every morning in the election year — 1986 — and we turned it into a political debate. Three people were running and people were saying I was

Saks & League to Save Lake Tahoe Hold Annual Oscar de la Renta Luncheon

Oscar de la Renta’s Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, special guests at the annual Saks Fifth Avenue and League to Save Lake Tahoe luncheon last Saturday, decided to get a close-up look at the nature under threat — and got more than they bargained for.
“Laura and I were going to do a hike at 6:30 in the morning when we saw a bear tear right out of the neighbor’s gate, which was quite the wake-up call. That thing was running fast and I was terrified,” Garcia related. The pair ended up waiting it out and completed their hike, and also enjoyed swimming and waterskiing on the lake.
The centerpiece of the event was a showing of the resort 2018 collection in front of 650 guests at the Schumacher family estate on the shores of the famed body of water.
Created 48 years ago when Bill Blass began showing his collection there to a small group of clients and friends, the event has evolved into a benefit luncheon and fashion show partnership with Oscar de la Renta and Saks Fifth Avenue for almost 20 years. This year’s event raised a record $ 1.1 million.
“We were lucky enough to go on Oscar’s last trip to Lake Tahoe,

Glamour Luncheon Toasts Women in TV

ONES TO WATCH: Glamour magazine added to the pre-Emmy buzz taking place off-camera, with a lunch to honor women in television today.
The private event was held on the rooftop of the Tory Burch boutique overlooking Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills and drew actresses and others in the industry, including Kate Bosworth, Amanda Peet, Abigail Breslin and Emmy nominees such as Khandi Alexander.
Roles offered to women have evolved and television’s importance as a way for women to bond has increased over time, said Glamour editor in chief Cindi Leive.
“The connection between women and characters and the shows they like is much deeper than it was before and then, at the same time, you’ve seen TV start to finally clue in that if you provide interesting, nuanced roles for women then you’re going to attract great talent, great writers, great directors, great women actors and also audiences,” she said. “To me, and I’m an outsider out here in Hollywood, but it seems to me that the roles are much richer and more nuanced in films than they were for women.”
For some, such as Alexander, who is a nominee in the guest actress in a drama category for her work on “Scandal,” the
