The Salting Lands the September Cover of O, The Oprah Magazine, But Founders Plan Growth Carefully

PROCEED WITH CAUTION: While many brands fortunate enough to land the cover of O, the Oprah Magazin” tend to ramp up production, The Salting has taken a much more measured approach.
Eighteen months after the sharply edited unisex label was launched by Michael Smaldone and Michael Ward, Winfrey donned a gold-colored fedora and caftan on the September cover of her magazine. After O’s creative director Adam Glassman e-mailed to share the news, Smaldone said, “I think I almost fell off my chair. It was pretty great.”
Glassman, whom Smaldone has known for years, liked the looks of The Salting and sent a few of his colleagues in to photograph the collection, and later pulled some items and requested a few hats to be made in Winfrey’s size for her personally. Additional clothes were later sent. About a month ago, Smaldone and Ward were tipped off that a cover shot was a possibility with the caveat that nothing is ever certain.
Trying to be prepared, The Salting launched its e-commerce site earlier this week. There was also considerable discussion about the potential sales ripple triggered by the Oprah effect. “We thought what the jackpot would be, that would be her on the cover in

Porter Magazine Brings Incredible Women Series to U.S.

Porter magazine is bringing its Incredible Women List of 50 entries, which was published last month in its winter issue, to life with two events in the U.S. Tonight editor in chief Lucy Yeomans will host a question-and-answer with Misty Copeland, who was featured on the list, in New York and on Nov. 1 the magazine’s second annual Incredible Woman Gala will take place in Los Angeles at NeueHouse, hosted by Yeomans and Donna Langley, chairman of Universal Pictures. Both events are done in partnership with Estée Lauder.
The talk with Copeland is the fourth in Porter’s series, which previously featured Serpentine chief executive officer Yana Peel, conservationist Saba Douglas-Hamilton, and film director Sofia Coppola. Last year’s gala was held at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and instead of staging a typical awards show, Yeomans enlisted a company called Letter’s Live to create a performance element in which Natalia Vodianova, Christiane Amanpour and Florence Welch read letters Patti Smith, Martha Gellhorn and Tina Fey. This year’s gala will feature a similar performance aspect. “We look to celebrate women who in the past year have done something to affect positive change for women either in their field, industry or the

Playboy To Stop Publishing Nudes In Print Magazine

Playboy Magazine has decided to stop publishing photographs of fully nude models in its print edition, The New York Times first reported on Monday.

Hugh Hefner, the publication’s founder and editor-in-chief, agreed with the decision, which was conceived by Playboy chief content officer Cory Jones.

“Don’t get me wrong… 12-year-old me is very disappointed in current me. But it’s the right thing to do,” Jones told the Times.

The 62-year-old monthly publication has come a long way since its first issue in 1953, when actress Marilyn Monroe graced the inaugural cover. Today, the iconic brand faces intense competition from other publishers and the easy accessibility of free online porn.

Hotter than the desert sun – Playmate @TiffanyTothxoxo

A photo posted by Playboy (@playboy) on

The magazine will debut a “PG-13” redesign in March. While no naked bodies will be featured, models in suggestive poses are still in — similar to content that’s already flooding the brand’s Instagram feed. Jones said it remains undecided if centerfolds will continue to appear in the magazine.

The publication’s website adopted a safe-for-work look last August when it stopped posting nude photos online in order to draw a wider readership. According to executives, Playboy saw a 12-million leap in monthly unique users after the strategy change.

Playboy’s print circulation is about 800,000, a significant plunge from the 5.6 million it had in 1975, the Times reported.

Jezebel called the revamp another attempt to keep Hefner’s publication relevant.

There can be no mistaking what this is: yet another attempt to keep Hefner’s once famed publication from entirely losing its relevance in modern society among its most desired class of readership of young well-off men. There’s also a probable interest in trying to continue to gain readership among women; the magazine has clearly courted that market with features on “women’s issues” like college sexual assault or Gamergate.

Alongside female eye candy such as Bo Derek, Anna Nicole Smith and Kate Moss, the magazine has long featured the writings of society’s top thinkers and writers. Joyce Carol Oates, Margaret Atwood, Haruki Murakami, Kurt Vonnegut, Stephen King and Alex Haley have all contributed. None have appeared nude within its pages.

Fashion Magazine Covers Revamped With Rescue Pups Are So Fetch

These chic pups have found their place in the spotlight, but now it’s time to find them a home.

Polish advertising agency Ostrosiostro recreated iconic fashion magazine covers with rescue pups as the featured stars, in a campaign called “Pop psu ta moda.” Using 25 covers from titles including Vogue, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar, the agency hopes to showcase the dogs in a bright and beautiful light, and raise funds to help 16 shelters in the country.

“[Many] campaigns show unwanted, abandoned dogs as sad,” Pawel Cichon, the agency’s founder, told The Huffington Post in an email. “I wanted to tell their story in a very positive and visually appealing way.”

Ostrosiostro promoted the photos on its website, as well as Facebook and Instagram, and will be showcasing prints of the covers at an upcoming fashion show in Warsaw. Since the campaign’s launch in August, about 70 percent of the canine models have found happy homes.

“Fashion and celebrities define beauty,” Cichon said in the campaign’s statement. “We wanted to take a little bit of that and change people’s perspective on shelter animals.”

Scroll through the covers below to check out the fierce canine couture.

Document Magazine Hosts Paris Dinner

FANTASY DINNER: Document magazine and stylist Olivier Rizzo hosted a dinner in Paris on Saturday night to celebrate the New York-based title’s fall issue.
There was an intimate vibe in the salon of Lapérouse, the art-stuffed, 18th-century restaurant on the Left Bank where the event took place.
Miuccia Prada, Raf Simons, Kris Van Assche and Simon Porte Jacquemus were among the attendees.
“It’s like a dream. It’s so perfect,” said Nick Vogelson, who cofounded Document with James Valeri, speaking of the guest list. “We chose this venue because Miuccia presented her first Miu Miu collection here.”
Jacquemus had an addition to his own fantasy dinner invitee lineup.
“I would add my cousin. It would be fun to have a child joining the table,” the designer said, referring to seven-year-old Jean, who made a sensation opening Jacquemus’ spring show. “Everything is seen differently through the eyes of a child.”
Has the experience been life-changing for Jean?
“He’s just happy he’s skipping school,” Jacquemus said with a laugh, agreeing people will keep an eye out for what’s up next for Jean and Hudson Kroenig, Karl Lagerfeld’s godson, today’s It kids of the fashion world.
Meanwhile, guests indulged on foie gras, beef and caramel soufflé – the restaurant’s signature dessert. And after

Ruby Rose Asks Fans To Boycott Magazine For Publishing Unapproved Photos Of Her

Ruby Rose is taking major issue with The Untitled Magazine after the publication apparently published unapproved photos of her without her permission.

“[The magazine] decided to publish images of me after we explained we wouldn’t be doing the shoot if I wasn’t appropriately covered,” Rose wrote on Instagram on Monday.

“Not only is this eight months old … The photo’s unapproved but they also sold photos to other publications. The interview made no sense eight months on. Please, if you are a fan of mine boycott this issue,” wrote Rose. “Or you are buying into greedy, exploitative propaganda. I have plenty of other shoots I’m proud of with professionals coming up. It’s not needed in your collection.”

In a conversation with The Huffington Post, Indira Cesarine, Editor-in-Chief of “The Untitled Magazine,” said she was saddened by the way Rose handled the allegations.

“She knowingly and willingly did the photo shoot with the magazine at the consent of her PR team,” Cesarine said. “As the Editor-in-Chief I did receive many emails [from the PR team] that they were happy with the photoshoot.

According to Cesarine, neither Rose nor her team took issue with the photoshoot or the photos at the time they were shot. Cesarine hersel was not on set at the photo shoot, and the concern over the photos was never relayed to the magazine if there was one on set.

“She’s fully dressed, though you can see a hint of a nipple through the shirt because of the flash of the camera. The magazine was never actually notified that there was a problem with these photos.” Cesarine also wanted to clarify that the magazine wasn’t trying to sell the photos and couldn’t actually make money off the photos themselves.

“Dani Brubaker and her agent are the only ones that can manage the rights to these photos and profit off of them. We had nothing to do with any attempt to sell these images whatsoever. For this shoot, I have a contract that Dani is managing the photos and has the rights to the photos,” she explained.

And as far as the actual images go, Cesarine said there is nothing she would consider to be a gross exploitation of the star.

“After she has done full frontal nudity on her show, these images are tame compared to what she has done on television,” she said.

Regardless of the nudity Rose has done on television, it is still her body and she is allowed to ask to take down the photos if she wants to.

Kim Kardashian Goes Topless For Sultry Magazine Cover Shoot

She may not have always been comfortable posing in the nude, but these days, Kim Kardashian is confident in her birthday suit.

The 34-year-old took to Instagram Thursday afternoon to share a few new sultry photos from her September cover shoot with C magazine. In the black and white images, the “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star covers her chest with her forearm as she looks off into the distance. Her brunette locks are slicked back and she’s sporting smoky eye makeup.

Inside the issue, the expectant mother of one talks about balancing her many business ventures and being a parent.

“If I’m working on an individual project, like my fragrance, I will only work on it if I’m 100 percent passionate about it, because that takes me away from my family,” she said. “I base my whole schedule around my daughter and my husband — that’s how life is now.”

The reality star added that motherhood “taught me how to prioritize. And I was forced to take a break for awhile. I never liked downtime, but I decided I enjoy it — that’s when the fun ideas come about.”

Anna Kendrick Shares Her Perfect Life Motto With Elle Magazine

Anna Kendrick seems to have this thing we call life all figured out.

In a recent interview with Elle magazine (for which she posed alongside celeb BFF Aubrey Plaza), the actress discusses everything from turning 30 to the best advice she’s ever received. But best of all, she shares her new life motto, in turn giving us all new words to live by.

When asked if she has her own motto, Kendrick gave what might be one of her best responses ever: “I can’t think of anything that wouldn’t make me sound like a pretentious fuckface. Maybe that should be my motto: Don’t be a pretentious fuckface.”

That is pretty much the best advice anyone could give, and at least its honest. We can also think of a few people who could benefit from adopting it, too. (Ahem, Donald Trump).

Throughout her career, Kendrick has also been on the receiving end of some great advice from industry peers like James Corden, who helped her get through her Oscars performance

She told the mag, “I remember when I was getting ready to perform at the Oscars with Neil Patrick Harris, I ran into James Corden from ‘Into the Woods,’ and I told him how nervous I was and he said, ‘You have to enjoy yourself because the 13-year-old you would punch yourself if you didn’t.’ I try to keep that in mind. I think that’s really great advice for everybody. To enjoy yourself in the good moments, and to push yourself in the hard moments.”

Beyond sharing her wisdom, the “Pitch Perfect” star opened up to Elle about what it means to her to be 30 years old.

“I started calling myself 30 when I turned 29. I feel really ready for it. I feel like in your twenties you have to put up with a lot of bullshit. I know you have to in your 30s as well, but you can always say, ‘You know what? I’m 30-goddamned years old so I’m going to go home before 2am because I can.’ I’m excited for that.”

Caitlin Stasey Says A Magazine Pulled Her Interview Because She Wouldn’t Pose Nude

There’s nothing wrong with a woman baring her body on the cover of a magazine, just ask Kim K. or Miley or Olympian Amanda Bingson. But when a woman is told to get naked for a photo shoot and doesn’t want to — and then the magazine pulls her feature — that’s a problem.

Just ask “Neighbours” and “Reign” actress Caitlin Stasey: The native Australian was supposed to grace the cover of Fairfax Media’s magazine Good Weekend, but says the publication dropped her interview once she refused to take her clothes off.

Through a series of tweets, Stasey explained to fans what apparently went down with the Good Weekend photoshoot.

On Friday, Stasey told The Huffington Post that it was not the concept of nudity she rejected, but how the magazine handled the situation. “Nudity is not inherently sexual, it isn’t shameful and doesn’t even need to be powerful,” she said. “But what was asked of me was highly stylized, highly sexualized imagery of me in panties, orchestrated by a man who never asked my permission and then disregarded my request to have the photos they would be taking of me, actually reflect me.”

Stasey added that she was under the impression the feature was “a story about me, about my work, about my world view,” and that she would not allow the magazine or its editors to proceed with “designing my message and using my body as a prop to incite interest and circulation,” she said.

The magazine’s editor, Ben Naparstek, told ABC that he believed Stasey had, in fact, agreed to be naked in the photos. Stasey later shared emails the editor had sent to prove that she actually had not signed off on a nude shoot.

Stasey tweeted a screenshot of an email she says she received from the magazine informing her that “the paper did not want to spend the budget on a photo shoot if the concept that they had envisioned wasn’t going to be used.”

In recent months, Stasey had been vocal about her frustration with the objectification of women. She founded Herself.com, a website that empowers women to reclaim their bodies by photographing them naked, but in a non-sexualized way.

“While no woman should ever have to justify her desire to stay clothed, it’s imperative that we recognize the distinction between empowerment and objectification,” Stasey told HuffPost. “Empowerment is when the subject is in control of the situation/imagery, and objectification is when the subject is coerced or exploited to fuel someone else’s means.”

Although Stasey was photographed in the nude for her website, she made clear on Twitter that that doesn’t mean she will strip at anyone’s beck and call — and certainly not Good Weekend’s. “The issue isn’t the photography itself but the expectation, the entitlement and those working under the assumption that I’d be comfortable posing naked for a publication purely because I had appeared naked previously,” she said.

And, for some ~feminist bonus points~ here is the awesome meme that Stasey made — feat. Naparstek, the dude who apparently assumed Stasey would pose nude, even though she says she never agreed to do so.

Science Magazine Officially Retracts That Discredited Gay Marriage Study

Science magazine officially retracted a major study on same-sex marriage and public opinion on Thursday without the consent of the lead author, UCLA graduate student Michael J. LaCour.

The events leading to the retraction became public on May 19, when the article’s second author, Columbia University political science professor Donald Green, issued a request for the retraction based on evidence that the study data were at least in part falsified.

As The Huffington Post reported last week:

The LaCour-Green study had examined the work of activists with the Los Angeles LGBT Center. After California’s gay marriage ban passed in 2008, activists at the center had more than 12,000 one-on-one conversations in Los Angeles neighborhoods with people who overwhelmingly supported the ban. LaCour’s idea was to see if those conversations produced any lasting change. He purportedly designed a randomized experiment to replicate those conversations, with a series of follow-up surveys online to test how the anti-gay voters felt about gay rights and gay marriage over time. Those who were contacted by the openly gay canvassers showed substantially more positive attitudes toward gay marriage as much as nine months later.

But according to a report issued Tuesday [May 19] by two University of California, Berkeley, graduate students and a Yale professor, there are enough questions about the data to warrant retracting the study. Retraction Watch broke the story Wednesday [May 20] about what students David Broockman (soon to be an assistant professor at Stanford) and Joshua Kalla and Yale professor Peter Aronow found.

After the LaCour-Green study was published, Broockman and Kalla were impressed by its findings and wanted to extend the research. In January 2015, they found some patterns in the data that seemed to be too perfect — statistically speaking, there was less variance in the results than there should have been. Some social scientists had noticed this when the study was first published.

As Broockman and Kalla continued their work, they wrote in their report, they uncovered more irregularities. When the pair noticed that their own study had a much lower response rate (the proportion of people contacted who actually respond to a survey), they asked the survey firm that allegedly gathered data for LaCour, Qualtrics, how it achieved such a high response rate. They said the firm replied that it had no record of the project.

This is what happened next according to their report and Green’s letter to Science: The statistical irregularities continued to mount, and the pair recruited Aronow to help with their analysis. … Broockman and Kalla contacted Green. Green said that he had joined the study after the data had been collected and thought that the irregularities Broockman and Kalla had uncovered were, indeed, highly suspicious. Green reached out to LaCour’s adviser at UCLA, professor Lynn Vavreck, and the two of them decided that Vavreck would confront LaCour and ask him to provide his data. Initially, LaCour claimed he had accidentally deleted the file with the necessary information, but again Qualtrics said it could not verify that the data had been deleted or that the study took place. It seemed increasingly clear to Green that no follow-up surveys had ever been conducted and that LaCour may have taken data from existing studies and manipulated the numbers to achieve the results he wanted.

Thursday’s statement from Science Editor-in-Chief Marcia McNutt cites two reasons for retracting the study. First, claims that survey respondents had been given cash payments to participate and refer family and friends to participate in the survey were inaccurate. Second, the funding statement was false. LaCour had misrepresented that funding for the study came from the Williams Institute, the Ford Foundation, and the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund.

McNutt’s statement notes that both of these falsifications have been confirmed by LaCour’s attorney, although it also points out that LaCour does not agree with the retraction.

LaCour did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Huffington Post, but he has told Science Insider that he will provide a full report in his defense as quickly as possible. His website has a statement that he will respond on or before May 29.

For Jim Key, chief marketing officer for the Los Angeles LGBT Center, which partnered with LaCour and Green on the study, the only upside of the retraction is that researchers will now go out and actually quantify whether the center’s methods are successful.

“We support the retraction and are very happy to be working with other researchers, David Broockman and Josh Kalla, to get accurate data regarding our voter persuasion work,” Key told HuffPost.

Stefano Tonchi, W Magazine Editor-in-Chief: We’re ‘Still Paying’ For Putting Kim Kardashian On The Cover

W Magazine was met with criticism when it featured Kim Kardashian on the cover all the way back in 2011, but according to Editor-In-Chief Stefano Tonchi, the scrutiny still hasn’t ended.

“When we put Kim Kardashian on the cover of W Magazine, that was quite risky and somehow I’m still paying for it,” he told HuffPost Live in a Wednesday conversation to promote the magazine’s annual Art issue.

The cover in question featured Kardashian nude and spray painted silver, which readers complained was “very provocative but really something very lowbrow. Too commercial,” Tonchi recounted.

“They talked about W [Magazine] as something much more society,” he recalled of the naysayers. “But what is the new society? Let’s see who was on the list at the MET [Ball]: She was!”

Tonchi continues to defend the magazine’s choice to make the ubiquitous reality star its cover girl.

“Kim Kardashian was a work of art because she really built herself in a way — creating this mythology around herself and her family and creating an empire around it, as we know,” he explained. “And that empire now, is the Kardashian empire.”

Catalyst Wedding Magazine Is The Answer To Our Feminist Prayers

2015-05-15-1431707199-2196099-catalystbeautifulpromoimage.jpg

Liz Susong and Carly Romeo, founders of the new Catalyst Wedding Magazine, felt it was time the bridal industry had a “feminist disruption.” Their magazine, which launches later this month, aims to do just that.

Instead of just featuring the white, wealthy heterosexual couples that usually grace the pages of popular bridal publications, Catalyst celebrates the underrepresented: people of color, diverse bodies, same-sex couples and the many, many people who can’t spend anywhere close to $ 40,000 on a wedding.

“Carly and I see a need for a magazine that publishes real, authentic love celebrations and diverse love stories that doesn’t allow advertising revenue to drive its content,” Susong told The Huffington Post.

In March, Susong, a “progressive” wedding planner, and Romeo, a feminist wedding photographer, set up a Kickstarter page to raise funding for the project. They surpassed their original goal of $ 8,500, ultimately raising $ 13,490.

Susong explained to HuffPost that Catalyst considers itself feminist on three counts: representation, roles and rights.

“Part of our mission is to increase diverse representation in wedding media,” she said. “We want to see all sorts of couples and bodies being presented in full-color, beautiful print! The editorial content engages in critical dialogue around wedding traditions and the industry at large, especially around gendered roles in the wedding planning process.”

And while Susong says the publication is a “strong voice in favor of marriage equality,” she explained that Catalyst is not a gay wedding magazine.

“We’re not just looking for a new niche market to sell glitter to!” she said. “We’re celebrating authentic love and community — no strings attached.”

Some of the features in the first issue include “Let’s Ditch The Diet,” “What Makes A Rebellious Bride” and a personal essay titled “Here In Your Love” about planning a wedding while writing a Ph.D. dissertation. And then, of course, there are the beautiful real wedding photo spreads featuring couples not traditionally pictured in mainstream bridal print publications.

“It’s important to us that the magazine is in print because while some offbeat wedding resources exist online, we rarely get to see diverse bodies in beautiful, full-color print spreads,” Susong said. “Magazines provide a tactile experience, and all of the couples together in the magazine tell one story. We think that’s really special!”

Susong and Romeo say they are aiming to produce two volumes a year, with the second issue coming out in January 2016. So far, they have sold around 600 copies of the first issue — and counting.

You can order your copy of Catalyst here. Orders will begin shipping Memorial Day weekend.

Katy Perry is going back to her roots.

The singer has dyed her hair nearly every color of the rainbow, but perhaps blondes really do have more fun.

While the 30-year-old is a natural blonde, we’re so used to her raven locks that she’s almost completely unrecognizable with a platinum ‘do on the cover of Wonderland magazine:

A total of 66 outlets were nominated across two dozen categories, with publications competing for distinctions in everything from reporting to fiction to design to video. Better Homes and Gardens, Cosmopolitan, The Hollywood Reporter, New York and Vogue, however, are the five publications in the running for the group’s most esteemed award, Magazine of the Year. Some Of The World’s Most Famous Transgender Women Cover CANDY magazine

2014 has been a whirlwind year for mainstream transgender visibility.

As we approach the end of this historic year for individuals identifying across the transgender spectrum, one magazine is celebrating the women who are living authentically and openly at the forefront of the battle for transgender rights.

For its 8th issue, Winter 2014-2015, C☆NDY Magazine brought together fourteen of the most prominent women who have become the faces of the transgender movement.

From left to right: Laverne Cox, Janet Mock, Carmen Carrera, Geena Rocero, Isis King, Gisele Alicea, Leyna Ramous, Dina Marie, Nina Poon, Juliana Huxtable, Niki M’nray, Pêche Di, Carmen Xtravaganza and Yasmine Petty

C☆NDY cites itself as “the first transversal style magazine” and is reportedly named after Candy Darling, the Andy Warhol superstar.

Luis Venegas, founder of C☆NDY, told Style.com that the shoot found inspiration from Vanity Fair’s Hollywood Issue. “It’s the first time such a large number of trans women have been featured on the cover of a magazine,” he stated. “Is it too daring to say that we’ve made history? Time will tell.”

We absolutely love this. Check out two individual shots with Laverne Cox and Geena Rocero below.

What’s Luke Skywalker Been Up to For the Last 30 Years? A MAD Magazine Exclusive

Next week, the new issue of MAD Magazine hits newsstands, which is okay, I guess. More important than that (and with a decidedly higher budget), next year sees the release of a new Star Wars film. Since the usual gang of idiots make their paltry salaries standing on the shoulders of other, more popular giants, they’ve set their sights on Star Wars once again.

I’ve written about the intersection of MAD and Star Wars before (for the official Star Wars website, no less) but it’s nice (I suppose) to see them go back to that dried up mine for material.

For their new issue, MAD has given us an exclusive look at their new spread that answers a very important question: What has Luke Skywalker been up to for the last 30 years? If you follow the right path, it actually tells the story of the old Expanded Universe…
