6 Surprising Lessons From Makeup Artist Lisa Eldridge’s New Beauty Book

lisa eldridge book

Today, Lisa Eldridge, the London-based makeup artist and YouTube sensation, is releasing her first book, Face Paint: The Story of Makeup (Abrams Image), a meditation on the history of cosmetics and the women who wore it best. Beginning with caches of red ochre found in South African caves, which were used as prehistoric makeup, Face Paint takes us through the ancient origins of modern trends—a bold red lip, a slick of black liner—and connects them back to beauty’s present landscape. From the invention of the world’s first mascara to the backstory behind Lauren Hutton’s famous gap-toothed grin, here are six surprising things we learned from the book that have us feeling inspired to dive into our beauty kits.

1. In Ancient Greece, around 800 B.C., Athenian women mixed burned cork, antimony, and soot to concoct a simple brow powder, used to thicken their arches and create the appearance of a unibrow. (The Romans also favored the singular style.) Centuries later, around 1917, New Yorker T. L. Williams purportedly caught his sister Mabel mixing burned cork with petroleum jelly to darken her lashes, which inspired him to launch Lash-Brow-Ine—one of the first mascaras—and his iconic beauty company, Maybelline. Rumor has it that the mascara helped Mabel win her boyfriend back.

2. From the 1500s, French women began carrying gilded tins filled with mouches, small black patches used to ornament their faces and conceal blemishes—think Marie Antoinette and the 18th-century court of Versailles. Made from silk, velvet, satin, or taffeta in heart or circle shapes, their placement was coded: Right cheek meant married; left, engaged. Mistresses wore one by the corner of the eye, while a mouche near the mouth showed you were single.

3. Around 1902, Helena Rubinstein launched her famous Crème Valaze in Australia with the claim that one Dr. Lykusky had concocted the cream with herbs grown in the Carpathian mountains. Years later, she revealed the true recipe to her secretary: mineral oil, vegetable oil, and lanolin, which she scented with pine bark, water lilies, and lavender. Ten pennies procured all the ingredients, but Helena charged 7 shillings and 7 pence because, in her own words, “Women won’t buy anything that cheap!”

4. Though Ancient Egyptian murals had depicted men and women in thick black liner—and archaeologists had found carved ivory cases with burned almond kohl in burial tombs—it was the 1912 discovery of Nefertiti’s bust that brought the exaggerated cat-eye back to life. With the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb in 1923 and the first public exhibition of the limestone-and-stucco head a year later, Egyptomania gripped the world. Elizabeth Taylor’s iconic portrayal of Cleopatra in 1963 only sealed the deal, and dark eye makeup has stayed in style ever since.

5. Discovered by Vogue editor Diana Vreeland, a young Lauren Hutton started modeling for Richard Avedon and Irving Penn in the mid-’60s. Hutton would do her own makeup for shoots, and initially tried to hide the gap in her teeth with mortician’s wax and a cap, which kept falling out. Quickly, she learned to embrace her crooked smile, which helped her secure a record 27 Vogue covers, a landmark modeling contract with Revlon, and paved the way for many winning gap-toothed girls—Lara Stone, Georgia May Jagger—to come.

6. Fashion designer Barbara Hulanicki’s Biba label began selling Technicolor makeup in 1970, revolutionizing the decade’s look with blush, shadows, and face glosses in a staggering range of trippy colors, from acid blue to mustard yellow to shimmering copper. Not surprisingly, David Bowie and his alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, were reportedly fans. At the time, the factory couldn’t believe Hulanicki’s requested colors—but then her first brown lipstick sold out in 30 minutes. Two years later, Hulanicki further broadened the beauty boundaries when she debuted the first makeup range designed for women with darker skin. Needless to say, the rest is beauty history.

Meet the Makeup Artist Whose Bold New Vision Is Shaking Up Chanel

Photographed by Daniel Jackson, Vogue, September 2015

With her singular beauty vision, the makeup artist Lucia Pica is bringing a cool new attitude to Chanel.

Lucia Pica’s big love of color should hardly set alarm bells ringing. And yet it has. Literally. At London’s Tate Modern. It’s a Saturday afternoon, and in her attempt to really inspect the brushstrokes and exacting undertones of a Sonia Delaunay masterpiece, Chanel’s new global creative makeup and color designer has accidentally tripped the security borders, and the alarm is now reverberating across the busy exhibition hall. Mortified, the Italian makeup artist slides away from the scene until she safely turns a corner, whereupon she bursts into a fit of can-you-actually-believe-I-did-that giggles.

Bold pops of color are her thing, and Pica—who will be responsible for conceptualizing and developing Chanel’s cosmetics—represents something of a brave move for the French luxury house. She thinks nothing of applying glossy acid orange to lips, dusting lids in canary yellow ombréd-out to sooty black, or artistically painting a single stroke of Wite-Out white just below brows with the style of an Abstract Expressionist. But that’s not all she can do; Pica can just as skillfully turn her hand to a natural no-makeup makeup look. It’s a versatility honed on set with photographers Mario Testino, Mikael Jansson, Alasdair McLellan, and Willy Vanderperre, and backstage at shows like Roksanda and Peter Pilotto. She’s also behind Chanel’s beauty campaigns, making up the faces of Keira Knightley and the model Sigrid Agren.

At lunch at Brawn, one of her favorite local restaurants, not far from her home in neighboring Dalston, East London, she’s wearing vintage black Levi’s 615s paired with a chic white turtleneck. Her oversize stone-colored trench from Armani menswear is jauntily accessorized with Margaret Howell’s foldaway trilby and—what else?—Chanel’s classic monochrome ballet flats and 2.55 bag. “I’m really into black and white at the moment,” she says, smiling and sipping an Americano. “I’ve been Chanelified.

“Coco Chanel was such a punk in the way that she approached style and feminism,” Pica continues. “She gave power to women, made it about how we wanted to look and not about dressing to please others. She pioneered that, and it couldn’t have been easy.” The heavy-fringed brunette pauses before adding, “Yes—I’m reading a lot of her biographies. . . . ”

Pica, who grew up in Naples, was always interested in makeup but didn’t consider it as a career until much later. She moved at 22 to London, where she waitressed, working the night shift at Soho’s lively Cafe Boheme. After completing a brief makeup course, she did a stint at Shu Uemura’s counter and assisted a roll call of legendary female makeup artists, including Charlotte Tilbury.

“I knew she would be a star,” says Tilbury. “She’s got creative vision and really knows her art, film, and fashion references. It’s been great to see her develop her own makeup style over the years, which has a fresh, cool edge to it.” Plus, she adds, “I love her naughty sense of humor!”

Though Pica’s first full collection for Chanel won’t launch until late 2016, she is already clear on one thing: “I want the lineup to be modern and very straightforward. I want it to be super now, precise, and strong.” In preparation, she has been spending her time creating mood boards, gathering visuals that inspire her. Her references are broad: Art Deco postcards, images of Brutalist architecture, a snap of an edgy young girl spotted in an L.A. nightclub, a series of Polaroids of single-stem flowers pulled from the vast congratulatory bouquets she received when news broke of her appointment, and a handwritten note from an ex-boyfriend. When we duck into the florist Grace & Thorn on Hackney Road, a spriggy purple shamrock—otherwise known as a love plant—catches her eye. “Everything translates to a palette or a lipstick,” she says. “Whatever I look at, I see makeup.”

24 Gold Makeup Portraits By Patrick Demarchelier

patrick demarchelier portraits

Today, Pat McGrath took the Tuileries for two hours of gilded makeovers, transforming the faces with her Midas touch. On hand to capture the spectacle? Photographer Patrick Demarchelier, who zipped by to capture the day’s glittering transformations in a series of easy portraits.

J’adooorreeeee!” cried the French stylist Catherine Baba, admiring her black and gold ’20s-inspired statement makeup before sinking down in front of Demarchelier’s lens. A few minutes later, Anais Mali shared the inspiration behind her winged lids as the photographer went click, click, click in his trademark rapid-fire style: “I wanted a Cleopatra look,” she explained. “I’m going to wear it out with my gold Vionnet dress to a party tonight.”

In classic rule-breaking mode, Jamie Bochert skipped a sheer wash on the lids in favor of dripping gothic gold tears, while Paris local Paul Lemaire went for a Bowie-esque star that suited his bleached hair, fuchsia Saint Laurent fur, and glam-rock good looks. Student Sarah Wong stumbled onto the day’s event while taking in some sun between classes, and ended up sitting for the iconic lensman with a sparkling razor-thin swoosh.

At about 5:00 p.m., Isabeli Fontana breezed in and showed how a supermodel gets the proverbial job done: She vamped for a spot-on 60 seconds before dropping onto Demarchelier’s lap and wrapping her arms around him in a warm, familial hug. As the sun began to lower over the garden, the golden glow seemed to make the day’s glimmering lips and lids shine brighter. Because as Vogue’s own Lynn Yaeger put it just moments after having her trademark rosy circles of blush reimagined in 24 karat pigment: “Who doesn’t like a touch of gold in Paris?”

12 Makeup Hacks for Slackers

Why should makeup be time consuming? If you don’t have time to go through a 37 step cosmetic routine, but still want to look reasonably attractive, these tips are for you. Skip the YouTube makeup routines and get a natural, radiant look with these 12 makeup hacks:

1) Hide under eye bags: Not enough sleep? No one needs to know. Highlight the crease of the bag under your eye with a shade lighter than your skin tone, then apply a darker tone between that and the eye to visually reduce the puffiness.

2) Exfoliate the lips: If you don’t have much time, just focus on the lips. Apply a gloss for a shiny finish or a stain for all-day color. If you exfoliate your lips with a baby toothbrush, it helps the lipstick last longer. Choose a shade that complements your skin tone.

3) Tightline eyes: Apply your eyeliner straight in between your lashes and on the inner, upper rim. The look is more natural than lining above the lashes, but still give you a bit of definition.

4) Curl lashes: If you’re not using mascara, curling your lashes can give you the same effect. Anneke la Grange, lead artist from an online makeup course, says to heat your lash curler with the hair dryer for 3-5 seconds before curling to set the lashes into place.

5) Hide blemishes: If you need to hide a blemish, instead of rubbing concealer all over it, take a thin brush and apply concealer directly (and lightly) to the blemish instead. The brush evenly distributes the concealer over the blemish.

6) Conceal mistakes: If you are applying lipstick or eyeliner on the go (it happens) and you slip up, just take a bit of concealer and blend over the mistake.

7) Moisturize without suffocating: Finding a tinted moisturizer will provide the color you need, moisturize your skin and let your skin breath better than heavy foundations.

8) Low maintenance lips: If you’re not a fan of lipstick, try using a tinted lip balm. It offers muted, subtle color while keeping your lips soft.

9) Easy winged eyeliner: Winged eyeliner looks great when it’s done right, but to all the women trying it freehand with an eye pencil: Use a spoon as a template by pressing the concave side against your eyelid and moving it around to create the angle of the wing.

10) Quick smoky eyes: The smoky eye isn’t for beginners–it takes lots of color application and precise blending if you want to achieve a professional look. To speed things up, draw a slanted hashtag on the outer corner of your eyelid with a deeper shade of eyeshadow and blend it in with the rest of your eye makeup.

11) Dry shampoo tip: Instead of applying dry shampoo in the morning, apply it before bed. That way, it really gets worked around and creates tons of volume and absorbs extra oil.

12) French manicure time saver: Unless you have surgeon’s hands, doing your own French manicure makes it look like it was done by a 3 year-old. For a perfect line every time, wrap a rubber band on your finger where you’d like the tip, and then paint only the part above with white polish. Once it has dried, remove the rubber band and clean up with a cotton swab and some nail polish remover.

Whether you woke up late or just don’t like to spend a lot of time applying makeup, these tips will help you get a clean, polished look with minimal effort. What’s your morning routine? Share in the comments!

What will Riccardo Tisci do next? This was the question on the minds of the designer’s loyal fashion fans as they settled into their seats along the Hudson River pier at tonight’s Givenchy show—and that growing spirit of anticipation didn’t stop at the neck: On the heels of last season’s darkly romantic Victorian collection, where models’ elaborate facial jewelry culminated in a heart-stoppingly provocative expression of beauty that nearly stole the show, the idea of upping the proverbial ante seemed like a bit of a tall order. And yet leave it to Tisci, always the contrarian, to suddenly flip the script: With the dim of the lights and the clang of a bell, Mariacarla Boscono stepped onto the runway—her hair falling straight over her shoulders and her skin stripped almost bare.

Just a few hours earlier, makeup artist Pat McGrath had foreshadowed the sharp change of pace backstage. “Riccardo wanted a softness, but also a strangeness,” she said of the decision to treat skin with a bit of concealer, a swipe of brown mascara on the upper lashes, and a “grayish brown smolder of shadow around the eye” before bleaching the brows blonde for a supernatural effect. Only two girls—Joan Smalls and Imaan Hammam—were being prepped to wear a trace of color in the form of a vinyl-lacquered deep red lip.

But then what to make of the velvet shrouded area tucked discreetly in the far corner, where makeup assistants were slipping in and out of a hidden room holding trays filled with sparkling embellishments? With a sweep of the curtain, McGrath revealed five more models that had been designated with a special purpose. Each one sat patiently as a team of artists used beads and fabric to construct the elaborate ivory-color face masks that McGrath had dreamed up with Tisci for the occasion over the course of the previous week; still another model was having a series of gold and black graphic metal slivers crafted into a gleaming headpiece that wrapped around her ears.

“Spray work, layer upon layer of jewels, bits of lace taken from the dresses,” said McGrath, ticking off a list of materials that were being layered onto the skin with professional adhesive in an upwards-of-five-hours-long process to create a look that was “romantic, organic, and all about pattern.”

True to form, when Tisci’s masked models finally stepped onto the runway—their facial constructions as fiercely feminine and ethereal as their couture statement dresses—they brought the fashion house’s otherworldly vision of beauty brilliantly to life.

Skin Care Products That Make a HUGE Difference in Your Skin, According to a Celebrity Makeup Artist

By Beth Shapouri, Glamour

Celebrity makeup artists always know the best skin care products–they need them to keep their clients’ skin in good shape under heavy on-camera foundations and to avoid irritation through multiple makeup changes. And Andréa Tiller, a makeup artist whose work you’ve seen on lovely women like Olivia Culpo and Amy Schumer, is one of those people we count on to know. Luckily last night she was in a sharing mood, spilling the details of three of her all-time favorites on Instagram, writing, “I can’t live without these! Seriously!” and adding “I have also used these on my clients as skin prep and they love them!”

Here are the products that currently have her heart:

Sisley Paris All Day All Year Cream ($ 410, nordstrom.com). She says, “This cream does it all! It’s amazing for daytime use. It has sunscreen in it that lasts up to eight hours! This is rare because most moisturizer’s sunscreen lasts up to four hours.” She continued, “This is usually my last step before I put on my makeup–no need for primer. Did I also mention it’s anti-aging? It’s really gentle on my skin and doesn’t feel oily!” One last point: “This is also for all skin types including sensitive and oily.” What makes it worth $ 410, you may ask? The micro-encapsulated filter technology that blocks out 90 percent of UV rays for hours on end as well as the fact that it contains 12–yes, 12–active ingredients that protect and repair skin.

Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment, ($ 69, sephora.com). “I am obsessed with this mud mask–I’ve been using this brand for years. If for a second I feel my face is about to break out I put this on and any blemish is gone and flat the next day. It’s a miracle worker!”

Vintners Daughter Active Botanical Serum ($ 185, vintnersdaughter.com). “This is such a beautiful face oil, I highly recommend it. I’ve been using it for a couple of months and my skin is radiant and softer!” How she applies: “I use it every night before bed and wake up glowing.” Pricey but, she says, “worth every penny!”

How I Reconcile Feeling OK About Myself With Completely Loving Makeup

My makeup wearing habits aren’t actually so deep or complex. I love to wear it sometimes, but I feel absolutely fine without it, too. When I do wear makeup, it’s not in an attempt to “fix” or “cover” things, but more of embodying different characters, or experimenting with different “vibes.” One of the most reassuring things I’ve been told was by my very clever academic aunt, who said my relationship to “all that stuff” was “extremely healthy.” But I do worry that my love for all things cosmetic can’t be doing such great things for my brain. How can I be an interesting, clever and all around top girl if, secretly, my biggest interest is coloring in my lips?

What worries me about constantly writing and thinking about makeup is that a lot of women are using makeup not to feel amazing, but to feel acceptable. As soon as doing this bizarre, gross thing ceases to make you feel excited and powerful, and starts to be needed to make you feel normal, that’s where we have a problem. I can’t see an issue reconciling wearing makeup with being a feminist: I am, in fact, over that whole debate. I think everybody should be able to make herself look exactly how they want to — I believe that is a very positive thing, in fact. But I don’t like the waters to get muddied with negativity and insecurity. I don’t like anyone telling anyone that they have to do anything. In this case, it’s the women ruling a dictatorship over themselves, which is really depressing. You need to be on your own side, or who else is going to be?

The way I reconcile naked-me with made-up-me is wearing makeup in a way which doesn’t make me feel like a total p.o.s. when I remove it. That is a one way ticket to not being at peace with your bare naked face, which is going to make you feel distinctly un-amazing at least half of your life. Don’t feel things need to be “fixed” with makeup. Don’t try to change the fundamentals of your face in a way which will be psychologically damaging when they have to be cleansed off every day. By all means make your face look like how you want your face to look, but keep the language distinct in your head: this is not how your face “should” look. And if you’re doing it for any reason outside of pleasing yourself, then that’s a red flag.

I know I’m almost certainly over-intellectualizing it. For most people, makeup is probably an automatic, even meditative process that they just do and don’t even think about. That’s fine, and I bet the thoughts they have for the rest of the day are no less valuable because of the fact they’re coming out of a head which is covered in makeup. I just can’t help thinking about it. Why am I finding certain aesthetics appealing? Is it all me or is it society tricking me? I don’t want anything I say to make anyone else feel bad about themselves, even if what I’m saying is as fatuous as “wearing grey lipstick is cool.” The balance between being a makeup obsessive, a feminist, an anxious person, a confident person is hard to strike, but I think I’m getting pretty ok at it.

My cousin, aged 4, came downstairs to tell her mother she was very beautiful that day. Her mother asked who had told her so, and she replied, “The mirror.” Why this would be a ridiculous thing for a grown woman to say is stupid to me. If you’re doing things to change your face, you should certainly be allowed to admit that you like the way it is making your face look. You should be allowed to do exactly what you want to your face, but try to make sure what you want is truly coming from you. The mirror should be telling you you’re beautiful every day, with all of the obliviousness and naiveté of a 4-year-old.

Reasons to Sleep in Your Makeup: From the Perfect Smudged Eye to Date Night–Proof Skin

Sleeping in makeup

Falling asleep in your makeup has long been a cardinal sin of beauty, sharing a level of skin offense second only to sunbathing. But, like soaking up Vitamin D, there’s something so-wrong-it’s-right about the immediate result that the beauty world has recently seemed to overcome the long-term consequences. Just look at Fashion Week runways like Marc Jacobs, Balenciaga, or Proenza Schouler, where backstage pro Diane Kendal can often be spotted applying eyeliner, then diluting it with a moisturizer-soaked cotton swab until it achieves the perfect smolder-y level of lived-in. Or flip through Stephane Marais’s early work with Linda Evangelista, whom he is rumored to have asked to sleep in a smoky eye before at least one shoot for a perfectly imperfect appeal. Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury goes a step beyond giving the look to clients like Sienna Miller: She practices what she preaches, washing her face and then re-applying makeup before bed every night.

The good news is, thanks to a new generation of products, you, too, can face-plant in your eyeliner, mascara, and BB cream without guilt. Tilbury designed her Rock n’ Kohl eyeliner to create self-described “bedroom eyes” that last from the moment your head hits the pillow well into the next day, while a swipe or two of Eyeko’s latest mascara, Rock Out & Lash Out, creates intentionally sooty she’s-with-the-band lashes (and requires only warm water to wash off in case you wake up miles away from your cleanser). Taking the concept one step further, BB Night Beauty Balm from Dr. Jart+ was developed to improve your skin while you sleep, blurring imperfections and brightening skin overnight. Here, four products that ensure being bad has never looked so good.

Ciara Gives Nude Makeup a Midsummer Spark

ciara espys

A swipe of neon pigment or a steamy, unpowdered glow may be statement-making ways to wake up summer nudes, but leave it to Ciara to offer up a stealth strategy for lending monochrome makeup a black-tie-ready spark at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles last night. Ever the sleek minimalist, the singer accessorized her contoured features and defined her lashes with a blended chocolate pigment and a final stroke of light-catching gold liner. It’s a powerful upgrade that resonated with the uncomplicated elegance of her silky, low-slung ponytail, and would pair just as well with richer eye makeup come smoky-eye season.

The Makeup Brush-Free Guide to Getting a Flawless Face

Alright, you pretty faces! So by now, we’re gonna guess you’ve seen our breakdown of the nine most essential makeup brushes you definitely should have in your makeup kits and use on the daily. But let’s be real: There are several scenarios that could play out where you just don’t have access to them. Whether you’re going on vacation and would rather make space for other goodies in your bag or you haven’t been able to purchase your collection of brushes yet, I have you covered! Here, I’m showing you how to apply your everyday makeup only using your fingers. Follow this tutorial to get the same pro-finish a brush would leave using zero tools.

2015-07-13-1436830495-8664132-makeup1.jpg

STEP 1: FOUNDATION/TINTED MOISTURIZER

2015-07-13-1436830526-7420407-makeup2.jpg

Pump a few drops of your liquid foundation or tinted moisturizer onto the back of your hand. Gently tap the product onto your three outside fingers with your opposite hand.

2015-07-13-1436830545-7515297-makeup3.jpg

To apply the product evenly, gently tap your fingers all over your face, making little dots of product that you will blend in by doing a combination of swiping and tapping motions.

STEP 2: CONCEALER

2015-07-13-1436830596-5577548-makeup4.jpg

Depending on they type of concealer you have, you will either use your finger to pick up the product or apply it directly to your undereye and any blemishes with the provided applicator. Either way, you want to blend your concealer with you fingers by gently tapping the product in place using your ring finger. Pro tip: it might feel more natural to use a different finger, but don’t! Because your ring finger is the most delicate, you’ll get the lightest touch with it.

STEP 3: BRONZER

2015-07-13-1436830650-3937089-makeup5.jpg

To pick up your bronzer with your fingers, which may seem intimidating at first, use your pointer and middle finger to make small circular motions on your palette.

2015-07-13-1436830670-6016764-makeup6.jpg

To deposit onto your pretty face, simply make small circular motions on the hollows of your cheeks, up onto your temples and along your hairline and down along where your neck meets your jaw line. It helps to apply the product upwards toward your hair.

STEP 4: BLUSH

2015-07-13-1436830700-321050-makeup7.jpg

For your blush, use your middle finger and your ring finger to make small circular motions on the palette.

2015-07-13-1436830723-3854472-makeup8.jpg

Smile and start making small circular motions starting on the apples of your cheeks blending upwards toward your temples.

STEP 5: HIGHLIGHT EYES

2015-07-13-1436830750-2374976-makeup9.jpg

Using your ring finger, grab any eyeshadow that is a few shades brighter and lighter than your natural skin tone and apply directly to your brow bones, inside corners of your eyes and on the center of your eyelids. You want to use your ring finger to make sure you get the most delicate touch, which will help you to have a lighter hand and not end up with too much product on your eyes. The best way to get an even application is to do a combination of tapping and small swipes back and forth.

STEP 6: CONTOUR EYES

2015-07-13-1436830807-7078716-makeup10.jpg

Using your same ring finger, pick up an eyeshadow that is a few shades deeper than your natural skin tone to apply directly to the creases of your eyes. Make small circular and tapping motions to blend well.

STEP 7: LINER + MASCARA

2015-07-13-1436830820-3903343-makeup11.jpg

This is obviously a step you will NOT use your fingers for! 🙂

STEP 8: HIGHLIGHTER

2015-07-13-1436830844-4518206-makeup12.jpg

Use your ring finger and middle finger to apply a little of your favorite highlighter — a little goes a long way typically. Apply it above where you put your blush, down the bridge of your nose, slightly above the center bridge of your nose and above your cupid’s bow. Tap only!! You don’t want to make swiping motions with your highlighter because it can mess up the makeup foundation you already blended with the previous steps. This is meant to enhance what you’ve already done, so gently tap your highlighter into place!

STEP 9: POWDER

2015-07-13-1436830880-4319343-makeup13.jpg

Use your ring finger and middle finger to pick up your powder.

2015-07-13-1436830905-5148661-makeup14.jpg

You want to use your powder to set any parts of your face that have not already had a highlighter, shadow, blush or bronzer touch. This will help keep your skin from getting too shiny.

STEP 10: LIP GLOSS OR LIPSTICK

2015-07-13-1436830937-2638411-makeup15.jpg

Easy! Use any provided applicator or your finger to blend your favorite lip gloss or lipstick into your smacker. To blend with your finger, make small tapping motions. This will give your lips more of a natural-looking deposit of color that will perfectly enhance your glowing fresh face!

2015-07-13-1436830949-2799195-makeup16.jpg

For some of you, this is just how you do your makeup all the time! If this is new to you, I will say that it definitely takes a little practice to find the right touch, just like anything new. Personally, I am a HUGE advocate for using makeup brushes for so many reasons, but also think it is crucial to know how to get the job done without them. Have fun and use these as guidelines!

“Amy Winehouse is a beauty icon of our time,” says makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury, herself an icon for her work. “Not only did she have a truly mesmerizing presence onstage and one of the most legendary voices of our generation, she had her own twist of the ’50s rock ‘n’ roll look, with that exaggerated feline flick eye.” With the documentary “Amy” out July 3, we look at 10 stars who have also rocked a strong winged liner. (For one, Tilbury says she recreated it for a recent ‘British Vogue’ shoot on Cara Delevingne, Suki Waterhouse and Georgia May Jagger.) After all, she says, “[Amy’s] iconic look has been referenced millions of times.”

This Makeup Artist’s Monster Transformations Are The Scariest Things You’ll See Today

Special effects and makeup artist Emily Anderson’s Instagram page is one you won’t be able to unsee. But we’re not sure whether that’s a good or bad thing.

The 23-year-old’s account is filled with hauntingly awesome makeup transformations turning Anderson into monsters, gremlins and villains. Armed with lots of water-based paints, highly-pigmented shadow palettes and patience, she’s morphed her upper body into three-dimensional versions of Doomsday, Medusa and Gizmo.

emily anderson makeup

Anderson honed her makeup artistry skills at the Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles and on the sets of film, TV shows and music videos, including “Lizzie Borden’s Revenge,” “American Horror Story” and David Guetta and Nicki Minaj’s “Hey Mama.”

She began dabbling with monster transformations back in 2014, and picked it up again in March. “I was inspired originally by body paint that pro wrestler Finn Balor had worn actually,” she told The Huffington Post. “I ended up having the chance to do his body paint for a match in San Jose for Wrestle Mania Weekend.”

To help seamlessly blend the makeup out into the crevices and folds of her skin, Anderson uses a total of four makeup brushes and sometimes the BeautyBlender. For more heavy duty long-wear makeup looks, she reaches for airbrush paints.

All of Anderson’s monster transformations seem incredibly complex to achieve. “The raptor was pretty complicated because of the angles involved, but some of the Disney scenes or Gizmo took more detail,” she said. “I try to challenge myself each time so they are all a little difficult or complicated for me to work out in some way!”

emily anderson makeup

When it’s time to take it all off, she swears by soap and water for the water-based paints, 99-percent alcohol to remove the airbrush and alcohol colors, and Neutrogena makeup remover wipes for anything that’s left over.

See some of Emily Anderson’s most gruesome transformations below and head over to her Instagram page for more looks.

Blogger Takes Off Her Makeup To Reveal The Ugly Truth About Online Harassment

You look disgusting.

That’s the title of beauty blogger Em Ford’s latest YouTube video, a three-minute feature that’s about far more than lipstick and mascara.

Ford, a 20-something from London who suffers from adult acne, has been posting photos of herself without makeup for the past three months. In the video, she washes off her makeup to highlight the disturbing online harassment she faces. She includes a smattering of the horrible comments she receives on social media daily, like “ugly,” “revolting,” and “I can’t even look at her.”

She decided to share the video in an attempt to challenge societal preconceptions of beauty.

“Over the past few months, I’ve received thousands of messages from people all over the world who suffer or have suffered from acne, an insecurity or self confidence issues,” she wrote on her blog, My Pale Skin. “I wanted to create a film that showed how social media can set unrealistic expectations on both women and men. One challenge many face today, is that as a society, we’re so used to seeing false images of perfection, and comparing ourselves to unrealistic beauty standards that It can be hard to remember the most important thing — You ARE beautiful.”

The video has racked up over 400,000 views since it was posted on Wednesday.

Vlogger Jackie Aina Takes On World Standards Of Beauty, One Makeup Look At A Time

Beauty vlogger Jackie Aina is taking us around the world on her face. At least that’s the aim of her latest video, “The Worldwide Standard of Beauty.”

Aina asked her followers to tell her about their ethnicity, culture and what the ideal standard of beauty is where they’re from. She then used that information along with a bit of research to recreate makeup looks from six different countries: Australia, United Arab Emirates, Nigeria, France, South Korea and the U.S.

The looks aren’t as drastically different as you might expect, but it was refreshing to read the comments from her followers about beauty standards in other countries. While some of the responses Aina received touched on actual makeup application, the majority discussed skin color and how fairer or darker hues play into standards of beauty.

One commenter from Australia wrote, “…the culture I live in values tanned skin, being pale is not seen as beautiful…” On the other hand, an Indonesian commenter said, “In Southeast Asia having dark skin is considered unattractive. So whitening products are very popular there.”

Here’s How to Make Pink Makeup Cool

Pink is the prissiest color in a makeup palette—and the most subversive. Just look at the Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks album cover, Elsa Schiaparelli’s shocking pink, or Gwen Stefani’s hair circa 1999. The color is far more audacious than we give it credit for. Think pink—as in punk.

Gisele Bündchen’s Tawny Makeup and Surfer Waves: The Brunch Look of Our Dreams

gisele bundchen

Is it really a surprise that the woman who brought us the perfect summer ponytail would follow up with the platonic ideal of beach-babe makeup? Spotted on Instagram, Gisele Bündchen accented her midsummer glow and sunkissed waves with peach-toned cheeks, rosy nude lips, and gently shaded lids. It’s a notch-up-from-natural pairing that was made for a lazy afternoon brunch—and transitions to cocktail hour with a few extra coats of mascara.

Jessica Alba Teases Honest Beauty Line; Prepare To Overhaul Your Makeup Bag

It looks like Jessica Alba’s Honest Company is expanding its eco-friendly goodness to the beauty aisle.

The 34-year-old actress and businesswoman took to Instagram on Tuesday to announce “something big is coming soon!” That “something big” is Honest Beauty.

A photo posted by The Honest Company (@honest) on

Since The Honest Company launched in 2011, it’s been a go-to brand for conscious shoppers in search of safe, non-toxic, accessible and affordable baby, skincare and home goods. “It just makes sense that a brand made for families, should really listen to families,” Alba wrote of her company’s philosophy in a blog post for The Huffington Post. “But, it goes beyond that, too. At the end of the day, we believe that together, we can make things better.”

Well, she must have heard pleas for more natural beauty options. While the brand has yet to release official details, social media postings reveal that Honest Beauty will debut this fall and we can expect a gorgeous color cosmetics range.

Make Up For Ever has released images of its newest campaign stars: model Andreja Pejić and actress and blogger Jamie Chung. Celebrity makeup artist Melanie Iglesias will also be the brand’s pro consulting artist. At a press event announcing the news, Pejić told the assembled beauty editors, “When I was little, I would dream about what it would be like to grow up and be a woman. I didn’t care if I was scrubbing toilets — if I was doing it as a woman, I’d be happy. I’m thankful to Make Up For Ever for taking this bold step.” According to WWD, Pejić is the first transgender model to front a big makeup campaign, symbolically opening the door for Caitlyn Jenner and others, too. The brand’s new GIF showing the campaign images is below.

You Can Totally Wear Bright Makeup This Summer. Here’s How

Being cooped up all winter (not to mention the gray skies and cold weather), it’s no surprise really that we all seem gravitate towards bright things come summer. Eye candy takes on a whole new level when all you’ve been looking at are bare trees and monotone colors for an entire six months. Even the most neutral-toting, pared down-wearing minimalist types start grabbing for something with a bit of pigment. Let’s not forget all the fashions that come into the picture. Bold, bright, colorful are the signature elements of summer time.

And yes, this has equally transformed to beauty products of all kinds, too. Pop polish on the nails, big hues on the lips. Sun-kissed looks for the cheeks and face, even eyes leap into the frays of this on repeat trend that circles back once warm weather rolls in.

Of course with this perennial rainbow of color that ushers in, we all wonder what we can (can’t or shouldn’t) pull off. With fashion it can be easy — when in doubt on a tone, wear it away from the face. Or shuttle it down to accessories.

But makeup and nail polish? Not so much. Colorful beauty products can be every bit of appealing come summer time. But unlike their fashionable counterparts, we’re talking about color not just against but on the skin, and if it’s not directly on the skin it’s pretty darn close.

Alas, it is actually easier than it might seem with the right products and colors for the job. Here’s how:

Bright nails: Perhaps the easiest way to work the bright beauty trend, electric nail polish tones can be a simple, nondescript and relatively low-key option compared to other beauty options. Pinks and corals tend to be the easier of the color wheel so go with something in this range if you’re not sure about anything bolder. Yellow pulls in as a solid second to this, followed by bright blues. Dial up the intensity depending on how daring you want to be. Bright greens, oranges and purples can be a bit more challenging, depending on tone. Try a range to avoid anything garish. Neon is also popular this year. When in doubt, put color on the toes and keep the hands more neutral. Check out Butter London, China Glaze and Deborah Lippman this year — all three have a great mix of big color in collections.

Bold Blush: Amp the sun-kissed look of the traditional easy pinks and bronzy colors with a pop tone on the apples of the cheeks. For cheeks and face, the color beauty trend tends to be the most limited. You’ll mostly find ranges of coral and pink, from the brightest pastels to the broadest jolts, but little else. So get to makeup counter and experiment a bit. The key with bright blush is to keep it to the apples of the cheeks, chin and forehead — it doesn’t translate as well when used to contour. Nars has a fantastic handful of incredible bright blushes.

Big Eyes: The color beauty trend is likely the most challenging when it comes to the eye area, and rightfully so. Between the direct contact to the skin and obvious look of a bold color on the eye, it can be intimidating even for the most seasoned or ambitious beauty lover. If working a shadow and you’re not certain, keep it to the base of the eyelid versus to the brow. A trace of a bright liner on just the top lid at its base is also an easy way to play on this trend in a subtle manner. Mascara is also an option for bright color play if you are open to something a little unexpected. Sephora has a great selection of eye colors across the spectrum.

Pop Lips: Last, but not least, colorful lips are a summer go-to. As with most dynamic color makeup items, corals and pinks are the easiest to use. But don’t be afraid to experiment! You’ll find orange, purple, and even green and blue! If unsure yet want to play, try a gloss, tint or stain versus a traditional lipstick. Nyx and Stila have plenty of good options.

Makeup Advice for Job Interviews

If you are currently in search of a new job, a better job or even your first job, it is only a matter of time before you are called in for an in-person interview. First impressions are key, and like it or not, your initial ‘look’ could have a lot to do with you landing that job.

The goal of this interview should be to demonstrate your competencies, qualifications and attention to detail; however, you should be prepared to look the part. Your appearance is the first thing the interviewer will see and, consciously or subconsciously, snap judgments will be made.

Less is more when it comes to makeup application for your interviews. You never want your makeup to be distracting to the interviewer when you are in the hot seat. You want people to remember you, and not the baby blue eye shadow you chose because you thought it would set you apart from the other applicants.

Below are some tips to use before your next interview:

1) Wear lipstick, not lip gloss. Gloss is shiny and gives off a youthful impression. You will look more sophisticated in a nude or light color lipstick

2) Don’t overload on the foundation, a light base of your liquid, cream or powder foundation should be enough. Use concealer to hide any blemishes

3) Use a layer of blush or bronzer to give your face a healthy glow

4).Skip the liquid liner (even if you are good at it) and opt for a gel or pencil eyeliner

5) Slightly play down your signature looks- For example, if you love a red lip you might want to opt for a red lip stain to tone it down. Or, if an extreme cat eye is your thing, you might want to opt for a chic kitten flick instead

6) Use neutral colors on your lid. Save your bright and bold eye shadows for a night out after you have landed that job

7) Don’t forget the mascara. Mascara will help open your eyes up and make you look awake and alert during your interview

It is important to still look and feel like yourself in your interviews, you don’t want to veer too far away from what you know and are comfortable with. Use makeup as a tool to assist in the interview and not as the main presentation.

Magnetic Makeup Brushes Are The Beauty Product You Never Knew You Needed

Waiting for freshly-cleaned makeup brushes to dry completely can be an overnight process. With no time to waste, we’ve tried everything from laying our beauty tools in front of a fan to blasting them with a hair dryer on low heat.

This was a problem that Australian makeup artist Rae Morris knew all too well. So she designed a set of magnetic makeup brushes that not only help people keep their vanities extremely organized, but speed up the drying process while cleaning.

rae morris magnetic brushes

Each makeup brush is made with cruelty-free hair that dries faster than synthetic substitutes, and the barrel contains a magnet that allows it to stand atop Morris’ signature steel base plate. The magnets also make it super easy to hang dry the brushes upside down — a fast-dry technique preferred by professionals because it keeps water or other liquids from seeping into the handle and helps to preserve the natural shape of the bristles.

Morris’ pro secret: After cleaning your magnetic makeup brushes, attach them to a magnetic field, such as an exhaust hood (just make sure the range is turned off). Or you can get really creative by affixing to a dish or towel rack or flexible floor lamp neck, as pictured below.

magnetic makeup brushes

magnetic makeup brushes

Morris recently expanded her magnetic range to launch the Iconic Collection, which includes her nine “can’t live without” brushes and a travel case that conveniently allows brushes to be dried upside down when you’re on the go.

While these genius tools come with a hefty price tag — the starter kit will set you back approximately $ 270 — you can save money by purchasing just a few individual brushes and the magnetic plate separately.

After considering how much we typically spend on new makeup brushes and cleaners, we’d say these are definitely worth the investment.

Watch the video below for a demonstration from Rae Morris herself on how to clean your makeup brushes:

Rae Morris provided complimentary magnetic brushes for review purposes.

15 Vogue Editors on the No-Makeup Makeup Products That Transform Their Looks

Lara Stone by David Sims

Last night’s episode of Inside Amy Schumer involved one especially memorable skit. In “Girl, You Don’t Need Makeup,” members of a fictional boy band sing to Schumer, pleading with her to wipe her lipstick, blush, and mascara off, then, once her bare face is revealed, emphatically requesting that she reapply it. As much as the comedienne is making fun of most men’s misunderstanding of how much effort goes into looking like you #wokeuplikethis, she also makes a good point about the state of the makeup market. We’re lucky enough to live in a time when concealer, contouring powders, and BB creams are so effective at enhancing our natural states, it looks like we’re wearing nothing but the skin we were born with.

Around the Vogue offices, a well executed no-makeup makeup look is par for the course. We trade tips on the creamiest tinted moisturizers or life-like bronzers with the same fervor as we would the right contact for getting a last-minute reservation at the Polo Bar. In that spirit, we asked a few editors to share their most instant and stealth complexion-saving products. Stock up.

4 Pastel Makeup Ideas to Brighten Your Easter Sunday: Taking Cues from the Spring Collections

Steven Meisel Natalia Vodianova

If there was ever a time to experiment with a candy-colored makeup palette, it’s Easter—which isn’t to say that festive pops of pastel pigment can’t radiate the same cool minimalism that won us over on the spring 2015 runways. Why not take cues from Dior’s sky blue tailored coatdress with a matching cerulean manicure? Or consider a swipe of petal pink lipstick and a swirl of rosy blush inspired by Altuzarra’s gingham power suit? One look at Balenciaga’s netted lavender dress might embolden the color-shy to try a wash of lilac shadow, while Stella McCartney’s buttercup jumpsuit is enough to make us try a color-corrective primer with imperfection-blurring yellow undertones. With that in mind, we’ve put together a spring fever–worthy range of fresh, powdery makeup shades—from Clé de Peau Beauté’s light-diffusing luminizer to Deborah Lippmann’s buttercup nail polish—that will liven up sun-starved skin better than the best bronzer.

Watch FKA twigs’s Matching Makeup and Manicure in Her New Music Video

twigs-2x

Today, FKA twigs offered the first glimpse of her new EP, due out later this year, with another visually arresting self-directed music video. In “Glass & Patron,” the idiosyncratic artist gives viewers any number of reasons to be impressed: her hypnotic voice, her tangle of braids, and her ability to hold an airborne split among them. But it’s her matching metallic makeup and nails that prove equally mesmerizing. While the singer commands a dance battle—her hip-grazing hair emphasizing each move like motion lines—her platinum WAH Nails manicure and reflective silver eye shadow catch the light. The high-impact effect puts even the best highlighter to shame—because when your moves are that fresh, why shouldn’t the spotlight be on you?

Makeup Artist Pat McGrath’s Insta-Beauty Diary: A Look Back at the Fall 2015 Shows

Pat McGrath Owen Wilson Ben Stiller Zoolander Valentino

“The return of makeup, from zero to full throttle,” is how backstage whiz Pat McGrath described the message of the fall 2015 collections in New York City, Milan, and Paris. “Things ranged from pure untouched skin to the bravest, most individualistic interpretation of beauty you can imagine.” For McGrath, who documented each look on her Instagram account (@patmcgrathreal) for her legions of faithful fans, that meant conjuring anything from tough-edged kohl eyes (Louis Vuitton) and pristine complexions (Valentino) to stained red lips (Bottega Veneta) and dramatically painted faces (Maison Margiela). Through it all, she says, there was one common theme of the season: “It was about character, bringing the face to life, capturing the personality of the girl.”

For many, the exquisite facial jewelry McGrath created for designer Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy—eyelashes dropping with pearls, suspended ruby teardrops, and glittering septum rings—crystallized the concept, becoming a runway highlight of the season. Although, according to McGrath, one backstage moment also ranked high on her list: the selfie she snapped with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson backstage at Valentino, where the actors made their much-documented Zoolander cameo. Here, a look back at her best Fashion Week beauty moments, which promise to offer fresh makeup inspiration as soon as this weekend.

What’s Inside My Makeup Bag: Beauty Director Jenny Bailly

My beauty stash is ever-changing—playing the field is part of my job description. But there are some products I love so deeply that they’ve earned a permanent spot in my rotation.

Eva Mendes Answers All Of Our Drugstore Makeup Prayers

Eva Mendes just added a new title to her resumé.

The actress was recently named the creative director of Circa, a makeup brand with a range of products including cream blushes, foundations and multi-purpose color sticks.

During the line’s launch event, Mendes expressed her excitement about the collection and stressed the importance of its drugstore accessibility (The line will be available at Walgreen’s and will priced from $ 8 to $ 15.). Mendes recalled her lower middle-class upbringing when she told HuffPost, “I remember what that felt like — wanting something that was quality, no matter what it was, but not being able to afford it.”

But, with the rise of fast fashion and a selection of cheaper beauty alternatives, Mendes told us that her teenage self would’ve thrived in the current market. “I think we live in such a cool time right now where it’s actually cool to be at Walgreens and it’s actually cool to be at H&M,” she said, adding that being a part of Circa allows her to “make something for [her] younger self.”

While accessibility and availability were key to Mendes, she was excited for the opportunity to endorse a product that redefines makeup’s function. The products are layer-friendly and are easy to mix-and-match. To Mendes, makeup should be fun.

“In a world full of who wore it best, it’s important for us to remind ourselves that that’s not fun,” she said, adding, that “the whole part of doing makeup is to have fun and celebrate ourselves.” Mendes’ trick is to just do what you love to do. “If I want to do a heavy eye, with a heavy lip and some serious contour then that’s what I’m going to do and not worry about being judged for that,” she said.

And we think there’s nothing wrong with that!

Genius Makeup Artist Transforms Himself Into Kim Kardashian, Dakota Johnson, Other Female Celebs

Paolo Ballesteros, a 32-year-old Filipino actor, model and makeup artist, wowed the Internet last year with his jaw-dropping ability to transform himself into seemingly any female celebrity under the sun — with little more than some deftly-applied makeup.

Ballesteros is making waves yet again this month with several new transformations. He made himself up as Kylie Jenner and as the newly-blond Kim Kardashian, as well as Dakota Johnson, the star of “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Ballesteros, host of the Filipino variety show “Eat Bulaga,” told The Huffington Post in an email Tuesday that he started experimenting with celebrity makeup transformations after watching tutorials on YouTube. He made a few attempts, he said, and was “surprised” at how quickly he took to it.

Over the past few months, Ballesteros has transformed himself into several female celebrities. They include Cate Blanchett…

Ballesteros told HuffPost that the hardest part of his metamorphoses is getting the nose just right.

“My nose is smaller and shorter [than most celebrities],” he said. “It took me a while to figure out how to do it. By drawing new nostrils, it made my nose more pointy or bigger.”

Jennifer Lawrence’s Bronze Lids and Fuchsia Lips: Why a Statement Coat Calls for Statement Makeup

Jennifer Lawrence beauty

After giving a nod to the seventies with a suede fringe bag yesterday afternoon, Jennifer Lawrence skipped ahead to the eighties last night. Spotted at a performance of The Elephant Man on Broadway, the actress helped her leopard-print jacket realize its full potential with a flash of hot pink lipstick and gleaming bronze lids. Glowing skin and a wash of cream highlighter blended along her cheekbones kept things fresh, while her signature chin-length waves felt as modern and casual as her varsity sweater. The verdict? Win-win.
