‘House of Cards’ tries making the best of a bad hand

“House of Cards” and “Roseanne” don’t have much in common, but their new seasons both faced an unenviable situation — trying to forge ahead without the central character, whose departure was triggered by off-screen controversy. Dealt that bad hand, the “Cards” writers have responded with a truncated final season — one that elevates Robin Wright’s role her new Commander in Chief status, while still providing a window into the world of bare-knuckled political brawling.

‘Making a Murderer’ picks up trail under glare of the spotlight

The frenzy stirred by “Making a Murderer” adds an extra dimension to its 10-episode follow-up, to the extent the original docu-series and the fallout from it becomes a significant part of the story. The result is an equally dense, engrossing look into the next phase for Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey, the two men convicted — under questionable circumstances — in the murder of Teresa Halbach.

Making Friends Outside Facebook

I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles. Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passersby
what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later, and with whom.

I give them pictures of my family, my dog, and of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks,
driving around town, having lunch, and doing what anybody and everybody does every day.

I also listen to their conversations, give them the “thumbs up” and tell them I like them.

And it works just like Facebook! I already have four people following me: two police officers, a private investigator, and a psychiatrist.

Received from Mikey’s Funnies.

A Formula For Making Any Marriage Work

A couple whose marriage is at a turning point — with only four days to decide if they’re going through with divorce proceedings — gets powerful advice from Dr. Phil in the video above, as he reveals his formula for success in any relationship: “The quality of a relationship is a function of the extent to which it is first based on a solid underlying friendship. Then it’s a function of the extent to which it meets the needs of the two people involved.” That means it’s your job to figure out your partner’s needs and vice versa — and then get busy meeting them.

2 Mistakes You Could Be Making When It Comes To Eating Fruit

Fruit is a good source of fiber, it’s relatively low in calories, and it’s full of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. That doesn’t mean you can eat unlimited amounts of it however. Fruits that are higher in naturally occurring fruit sugar and lower in fiber can impact blood sugar and may not be as satisfying. While fruits are lower in calories than most foods, they still have calories, which can add up and may slow weight loss.

In addition to limiting your fruit intake to two servings daily, Dr. Melina Jampolis, author of The Doctor On Demand Diet: Your Prescription For Lasting Weight Loss, recommends you follow these steps to make sure you aren’t getting too many calories from fruit.

1. Skip the fruit juice.
Fruit juice does not contain fiber, which is important for fullness, keeping blood sugar more stable, and weight loss. Juice is also a concentrated form of calories that can be quickly consumed. Think about the amount of time that it takes you to eat an orange versus the amount of time it takes to drink a four-ounce glass of juice.

The dirty little secret about fruit juice — even 100 percent pure fruit juice — is that it contains enormous amounts of sugar and calories. For example, 100 percent pure orange juice has more calories than an equal amount of Coke, Pepsi, or other sugary soda. Sure, the orange juice has vitamin C, but if you’re eating a healthy diet, you’re getting plenty of vitamin C from other sources, such as whole fruits and vegetables.

If you really love pure fruit juice, you can include it in small quantities. In my mind, juice has no place in a weight-loss program because it provides so little return on your caloric investment.

4 Ways To Boost Your Chances Of Slimming Down

2. Stay away from dried fruit.
Unlike juice, dried fruit contains fiber, but it does not contain water, so dried fruit is a much more concentrated source of calories and sugar that can add up fast. Dried fruit falls into the same category as the dry carbs — it has a higher energy density so you just don’t get a lot of bang for your buck in terms of volume and hunger control. I’m always astounded by the number of calories in dried fruit: half a cup of raisins, for example, contains 240 calories — as much as a McDonald’s hamburger and more than a bag of chocolate candies. Fresh fruit is also far more satisfying: for the same number of calories, you can eat two cups of grapes or a quarter cup of raisins. So stick with the whole fruit, save calories, and feel fuller.

3 Reasons To Add More Protein To Your Diet

Modified excerpt from The Doctor On Demand Diet: Your Prescription For Lasting Weight Loss by Melina Jampolis, MD (Ghost Mountain Books). Ghost Mountain Books, Inc., along with Doctor on Demand, is owned, in part, by Dr. Phillip C. McGraw and Jay McGraw.

Kanye West Unveils Making Of Yeezy Season 2 Fashion Line With Silent Film

Kanye West‘s Yeezy Season 2 fashion line was formally introduced to the world via a silent film that not only showed off the Chicago superstar’s creative vision, but also the work that goes on behind the scenes. Although the line has been teased since last month, the film gives fans a first peek at the exclusive creations.

The silent film was posted on the recently ressurected Yeezy.Supply site, and it is exactly what one could expect from a Kanye West production. The lack of sound makes the images flashing on screen compelling. The film shows the workers furiously stitching and putting together the line under West’s stern supervision.

There’s no forwarding or rewinding of the film, so once you hit up the page you have to commit.

You can watch Kanye West’s reveal of the Yeezy Season 2 fashion line here.

Infographic: How Restaurants Are Making Children’s Meals Healthier

Due to high-profile exposure like the “Happy Meals bill,” which seeks to market less fattening meals to children, many restaurants across the country are trying to make their kids menus healthier and combat childhood obesity. Here are some ways they are tackling the issue:

  • McDonald’s: Happy Meal toys each glued to informative pamphlet on hypertension
  • Taco Bell: Parents must demonstrate full consent to their children’s meal choices by placing order directly with corporate lawyer
  • KFC: Instituting strict one-bucket-per-child limit

In the digital music age, the tape is making a comeback

The art of the mix tape might not be dead after all. In the era of on-demand digital music, business is booming for one of the last companies to actually make cassette tapes. National Audio Company, the largest of the handful of companies still making audio cassettes, was founded in 1969 in Springfield, Missouri and began producing cassettes in 1980. Despite producing a product whose technology has been thought of as obsolete for several decades, NAC sold upwards of 10 million tapes in 2014 and their profits are up 20 percent. Steve Stepp, the president of the company, which bills itself as “The Great American Cassette Company,” credits their success to the power of nostalgia. "You might think it's the older demographic powering this," Stepp said. "But it's not. It's the under 35 age group. They grew up listening to MP3s on earbuds and thought that's what music sounded like. "Then they listened to their grandpa's vinyl LPs or cassette tapes and that group has now decided that's what music should sound like, and the art is important on the packages as well. We have a very loyal audience. They experienced digital and now they have experienced analogue."NAC’s production lines are full of still-functional machines built in the 70s, a nostalgic technology made by other nostalgic technology.70 percent of their annual product—and this may be the most surprising thing of all—is recorded music cassettes produced for large companies like Sony and Universal, as well as smaller contracts with indie labels, who favor tape for its “warm, analogue sound.” Only 30 percent are blank tapes. Cassette tapes debuted over 50 years ago, in 1963. About five years ago, Stepp told the Daily Dot, interest in tapes picked up again. This followed a downturn in demand that began in about 1995 with the apparent triumph of CDs. In that trough between the downturn and the uptick, NAC had gone around the country buying up the machinery that made the tapes, as duplication houses and record labels turned their backs. In the event that you might think this a quick, hipster-driven bubble, there is one aspect of the new cassette culture that indicates it is not. In around 2010, indie label heads told Stepp they were having to go out to garage sales to find tape decks that allowed them to play the tapes they liked. So Stepp approached Tascam TEAC, the one time 600 pound gorilla of tape deck manufacturing, and asked them if they would retool their line and start building decks again. They initially had no interest, but last year that is excatly what they began to do. "They're not going to do that for a six month phenomenon," said Stepp. "We are acting as distributors for them and we are selling them as fast as we can get them in, by the pallette!"Convenience dictates much of our technology use. Who wants to have to stick around home waiting for a phone call—or rely on a clumsy machine to take messages—when we have phones verging on full computers that ride in a pocket? But music is not something we have to do, it’s something we get to do. And sometimes tactility connects us further to the art we consume. H/T Boing Boing | Photo by jDevaun/flickr (CC BY-ND 2.0)

Making of a Style Icon: The Stylist Behind Laverne Cox’s Fashion

She’s beauty, she’s grace, she’s ruling the red carpet. Actress Laverne Cox, star of Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black, wherever she goes, is turning heads and wowing the press with her elegantly unique style.

After being named one of Time‘s 100 Most Influential People, scoring a coveted spot on People‘s Most Beautiful People list, and appearing on numerous magazine covers, it’s hard to keep up with this megastar.

But even a great deal more is going on. Laverne Cox is establishing herself as not just a leading figure promoting the transgender community, but also as a style icon.

It is often thought that behind most exceedingly successful individuals is a person helping navigate the tricky waters of stardom. So who’s the stylist working with Laverne to perfect her sophisticated aesthetic? Christina Pacelli, stylist to Laverne, shares with us the process of elevating someone into style stardom.

As most fashion boys and girls do, this Huntington Beach, California native discovered her love for fashion at a young age. She says she first became fixated on clothes in fourth grade. Back-to‐school‐shopping was the highlight of her year. With a mother from Mexico and a first-generation Italian father, Pacelli says her upbringing was anything but conventional, as she has been on her own and financially autonomous since the tender age of 15.

Clueless‘s Cher and My‐So‐Called‐Life‘s Jared Leto have all provided inspiration to Pacelli, who admires their hard-to-achieve “I don’t give a damn” look.

After studying Communications and Law at UCLA, she began her professional career as an entertainment and lifestyle publicist. She then transitioned to her love of fashion and began apprenticing for stylists such as New York‐based Anna Katsanis, who has styled editorials for major magazines around the world.

Through her publicist relationships, Pacelli was introduced to Laverne and it was fireworks from the start.

Pacelli says:

Laverne and I share the same stylistic approach. She has an admirable sense of fashion, and a great point of view when it comes to personal style and the fashion industry. She is very involved in her styling, which I believe comes through in her looks. In Laverne’s words, ‘I follow the guiding pillars of FFPS in fashion — Fit, Fabric, Proportion and Silhouette. If all are right, then the look will translate well’

But how do all of the buzz-worthy looks come together? From custom Marc Bouwer to Viktor Luna, Cox and Pacelli have procured show‐stopping styles.

Pacelli says:

When Laverne and I first began working together, we briefed one another on our individual stylistic philosophies. With Laverne, it is not simply about wearing a designer garment. What she wears embodies her personality, confidence and her role for the occasion, or it will feel out of place and naturally won’t be worn.

With so many notable moments, Pacelli says that some of her proudest times with Laverne include the 2014 Emmy Awards in custom Marc Bouwer, the Creative Arts Emmys and Entertainment Weekly party in Donna Karan and the White House Correspondents Dinner in Ines Di Santo. Pacelli notes, “Laverne’s style has always been feminine and pretty. Our work together has built upon that, to take her style to non-obvious places and further showcase her confidence, grace, strength and sophistication.”

Landing spots on countless best‐dressed lists, Christina does not disregard the strides they have made together.

Pacelli describes:

She has been called a style icon on the rise. I do not disagree with that. She is making history with her presence in the industry and I do not take the job lightly. As a transgender black woman who has already pioneered so much, and broken barriers, the way Laverne looks and dresses has an impact and influence upon so many people, LGBT or non‐LGBT. People have shared with me they have been moved to tears observing Laverne because of what she stands for and how she inspired them with her visual presence.

Christina herself has been tapped to be featured in a Viacom series, which will air on MTV and Netflix.

As Laverne continues to gain meteoric success and notoriety, it’s clear we have a great deal of fierce fashion to look forward to. And not only will the fashion be beautiful, but Cox and Pacelli will together be defying cultural norms and changing the world’s perception of the transgender community.

“I knew that styling Laverne Cox came with more responsibility than just vanity. She inspires people simply by what she is wearing. And then she speaks and inspires them more. I understand and take my responsibility very seriously. I know eyes are on Laverne from all over the world.”

Trump: ‘Making America Hate Again!’

Trump’s official campaign slogan is “Make America Great Again!” Perhaps he should change it to the headline above.

The Huffington Post has made an editorial decision to put Trump articles in the Entertainment section instead of the political section. This seemed like a good idea at the time.

Admittedly he is the class clown — and the schoolyard bully. Oddly, also the teacher’s pet. But his toxic mix of egotism, cynicism and racism simply isn’t entertaining. It is, however, still a spectacle.

His now infamous tirade about Mexicans being criminals and rapists is well-known.

Recently two cowardly young thugs in Boston allegedly urinated on and used a metal pole to beat a 58-year-old sleeping Hispanic homeless man, fracturing his nose and causing other serious injuries. One of them reportedly told the police “Donald Trump was right, all of these illegals need to be deported.” (Apparently, the two assailants checked his immigration status before brutalizing him.) A news person asked Trump for his reaction, and Trump reportedly said “That would be a shame” adding this remarkable statement, “I will say, the people that are following me are very passionate. They love this country. They want this country to be great again. But they are very passionate. I will say that.”

His supporters chanted “USA! USA! USA!” when some protesters were thrown out of a Trump event in Phoenix — as if they were cheering at Wrestlemania.

This week at a press conference in Iowa, several times Trump ordered Univision anchorman Jorge Ramos, a respected journalist and an American citizen, to “Sit down,” as if Ramos were a dog being ordered by his unkind master to “Sit.” Trump also added to “Go back to Univision.” Then Trump nodded at one of his security guards who escorted Ramos out of the room.

In the hallway, a Trump supporter further humiliated Ramos telling him “Get out of my country.” Ramos responded with restraint, class, and dignity.

The delusional Donald has often claims that he will win the “Hispanic” vote. This assertion might be just another Trump empty promise. A recent Gallop Poll shows among Hispanic voters, he has the highest disapproval rate (65 percent) of any GOP candidate.

Apparently he is looking to carry Asian vote as well. Here’s Trump mocking them and doing a racially stereotypical impersonation of “these people”:

While Trump may not carry Latinos or Asians, he will likely carry the racists’ vote. It isn’t surprising that Trump is receiving endorsements from white supremacy groups and neo-Nazis. David Duke, former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, has reportedly called Trump the best of the GOP candidates.

In an interview with Bloomberg’s Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, Trump reportedly said “I don’t need his endorsement; I certainly wouldn’t want his endorsement” and added “I don’t need anyone’s endorsement.” When asked if he would repudiate the endorsement, Trump is quoted as saying “Sure, I would if that would make you feel better.”

That doesn’t make me feel any better.

atlantique ascoli

Brooches, stoles . . . estate-sale chic is going strong. And even for those who aren’t quite ready to embrace an eclectic vision à la Alessandro Michele, a little bit of ladylike appeal goes a long way. Enter Atlantique Ascoli, the eponymous brainchild of a Parisian musician, whose cult-y range of polished blouses has won her an array of well-heeled fans since launching in 2013.

A labor of love if ever there was one, like many before her, for Ascoli it wasn’t a gap in the industry she was combating so much as it was a gap in her wardrobe. “I didn’t think in terms of market,” she says, “as I didn’t know anything about it. I started the line organically because I had in mind particular shapes, textures, volumes, and how clothes hang on the body that I couldn’t find elsewhere and that I wanted to wear myself.” The result is a range of tops, whipped up in crisp al prato cotton, that plays with sculptural, Victorian ruffles and quietly eccentric levels of volume. New to the lineup are her skirts and dresses, equally easy and soigné. There’s an ineffable quality to Ascoli’s designs—girlish in places but all woman; her impeccable, high-necked blouses are clearly the clothes of she who has her life in order. The dichotomy between frilly and purely feminine stems from Ascoli’s hometown style. As she tells it, “I think the Parisian cares and is conscious about her allure, but when she gets going, she lets go and forgets about it.” Perhaps that accounts for the wide-ranging appeal of her considered pieces, a blank slate for women of all ages looking to add a touch more polish to their day-to-day. Case in point: Atlantique Ascoli has proved just as logical a buy for stockists like Dover Street Market as it is for ladies who lunch snapping them up at Barneys. You’ll find Ascoli’s latest offering at both, as well as Colette, The Webster Miami, and Net-a-Porter.

Are You Making Fear-Based Choices In Life?

Dr. Phil compares life to a river, explaining that they’re both always moving and can’t be damned up for long. “I want people to understand that choices are what determine where the river of your life is going to flow, and you can’t not choose,” he says. “One year from this very day, your life is going to be better or worse than it is right now today; it won’t be the same. And whether it’s better, whether it’s worse, whether you’ve made progress or fallen back is going to be a function of the choices you make between now and then.”

Be on the show: Lost faith after a life changing incident?

Research shows that 80 percent of our choices are fear-based; in other words, we’re afraid of what will happen if we don’t make a certain choice as opposed to making decisions based on what we really want out of life. Ask yourself, “Is this an escape-based decision or a target-based decision?” Don’t be pushed away from what you don’t want; let yourself be pulled toward what you do want.

Here’s one way to tell if you’re making the right decision.

Bakery Fined For Not Making Gay Wedding Cake Sends Cakes To LGBT Groups

This week, the owners of an Oregon bakery fined $ 135,000 for refusing to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple sent out 10 specially made cakes to LGBT groups.

Sweet Cakes By Melissa sent the cakes, which say “We really do love you!” in white writing over a red heart. The packages also included a DVD copy of “Audacity,” an anti-gay film, according to The Advocate. The film’s website says it “delivers an unexpected, eye-opening look at the controversial topic of homosexuality.”

“Our purpose is to express our love for them as a Christian,” bakery owner Melissa Klein wrote in an email to the Oregonian. ”We don’t hate them. We also included in the package the movie Audacity. I feel it is a well done movie that shows what being a Christian is about. My hope is that they will watch it and maybe just understand our heart.  We want to show them that it’s not about not serving them it’s about not being able to partake in an event.”

The bakery could not immediately be reached for comment.

Jason Howe, communications director for Equality California, was not impressed with the package the group received.

Howe hasn’t watched the film, he told The Huffington Post. Based on its description, “it’s more of the ‘hate the sin, not the sinner’ message,” he said.

“Meanwhile, they’re still trying to defend their right that they can choose their customers and not treat everybody equally and stand in the way of rights for LGBT people,” Howe said. “So where’s the love?”

In July, Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian ruled that Sweet Cakes by Melissa must pay $ 135,000 to a Portland lesbian couple for refusing to make a cake for their wedding in 2013. The Kleins were found in violation of state laws banning discrimination based on sexual orientation.

The Kleins, who have appealed Avakian’s decision, said making the cake goes against their religious beliefs.

“There’s this false narrative that they’re putting out that there’s a conflict between Christianity and LGBT people,” Howe said. “There are thousands of faith leaders that don’t have a problem with LGBT people and don’t see a conflict between their interpretation of the Bible and LGBT rights.”

“They weren’t being asked to do anything that would violate their faith, they were just being asked to make a cake,” Howe added. “They didn’t have to endorse anything.”

Is Tea the New Juice? How the Original Beauty Blend Is Making a Major Comeback

wellness beauty teas

Another day, another I’ll-have-what-she’s-having elixir. And yet, in the midst of activated-charcoal tonics, slow-simmered bone broths, and nut milks spiked with turmeric, the most compelling health brew of the moment isn’t exactly new. Tea, naturally rich in antioxidants and low in sugar, is experiencing a major fashion and wellness renaissance—and if a quick look around is any indication, it may be poised to become the next green juice.

In recent seasons, models have declared allegiance to energy-boosting herbal blends backstage, with Kendall Jenner professing her love for Kusmi Tea’s BB Detox, a mix of green tea, maté, and guarana, among other ingredients. Meanwhile, matcha—the powdered bright-green tea that appeals to purists and the whole of Instagram—has given rise to cafés like Chalait, a jewel box in Manhattan’s West Village; you can also find it on the menu at the nearby Equinox (virtuous) and in a new custard pie at Brooklyn’s Four & Twenty Blackbirds (deliciously less so). And among those shaping how we think about beauty today—from Reiki-practicing facialists to herb-focused shopkeepers committed to impeccable sourcing—it’s increasingly top of mind.

“Beauty tea is the next wave,” says Jessica Richards, owner of Brooklyn boutique Shen, known for its curated mix of natural-focused skin care and in-house facials. For a glowing complexion, she says, “It goes back to what you eat”—and drink. Richards regularly brews Egyptian licorice tea, citing its anti-inflammatory properties, and starting this week, she’s stocking the new Sleepy Cow tea from the U.K. brand (and Soho House favorite) Cowshed. The elegantly packaged lemon-chamomile blend, developed with the London-based Joe’s Tea Co., will be on offer post-treatment at Shen this fall for an extra dose of calm.

In the meantime, why not try facialist Negin Niknejad’s Love Potion? Inspired by her cosmically connected client, jewelry designer Pamela Love, the tea—made with heirloom roses, violet, nettle, cardamom, and other poetically charged ingredients—is one of four variations available as part of her JustBe skin-care line. Niknejad, in the midst of a three-year apprenticeship with an herbalist, also creates custom blends to support immune health and aid sleep. According to Niknejad, technique is everything: “I always recommend to steep your teas overnight,” she says of combining boiling water and herbs in a large Mason jar before refrigerating it the next morning. “Once you make an infusion”—as opposed to a quick-brewed cup—“that’s when it’s actually medicinal.”

Ritual is essential to this new wave of tea-drinkers, from Niknejad, who recently hosted a full-moon tea gathering at her New York City studio, to Baelyn Elspeth, a Los Angeles native who leads Taoist-inspired tea ceremonies in dreamy locales (Venice Beach, cedar forests), where flower crowns and drums occasionally make an appearance. At New York’s CAP Beauty, a wellness boutique in the West Village, the sensorial aspects of tea extend to its facials, which often incorporate chamomile and green tea infusions. Later this fall, the company will launch a private-label organic matcha, which entails its own meditative ritual. Expect in-store tastings, along with handsome teacups by local ceramist Romy Northover.

It follows that cleanse diehards have moved on to “teatoxing,” which makes some occasionally questionable weight-loss claims. “I don’t know about teatoxes,” says Frank Lipman, M.D., the New York integrative medicine expert who is no stranger to cleanses (his two-week version is a recurring topic of conversation in the Vogue offices), but he stands behind tea’s numerous benefits. “You get slightly different antioxidants and catechins and polyphenols” in different types, says Lipman, who drinks his way through the spectrum: black and green tea by day; rooibos by night. “In South Africa, we all grew up with rooibos tea,” says the Johannesburg-born doctor. “[It] was, in a way, like a catch-all remedy.” And it’s once again having a major moment, popping up in Aloha’s new Beauty Tea (along with sea buckthorn berry and hibiscus flower), in Sakara’s Detox Tea (with rose petals and stomach-soothing linden flowers), and in the free-radical fighting Cocoa Rooibos blend from L.A. boutique Chay, developed with the medicinal tea atelier Wilwand.

Of course, there may be some logic to tea’s moderating effects on mood and late-afternoon cravings. “You start drinking a tea a day, and maybe you don’t need that second cup of coffee,” says CAP Beauty co-founder Cindy DiPrima. It’s certainly well worth clearing some space on your desk for The Office Blend, from the artisanal herb company Daphnis and Chloe, featuring irresistibly chic packaging by Nathalie Du Pasquier, the Milan-based artist and Memphis Group cofounder. Made with rosehip, Greek mountain tea, thyme flowers, and peppermint, it’s designed to enhance alertness—and weaning off cold brew has never tasted (or looked) so good.

7 Mistakes You’re Probably Making On Your Online Dating Profile

Having no luck getting a decent guy or woman to message you on online dating sites? We hate to say it, but it may be because the profile you’ve created is unremarkable. (Hey, you’ve been in a relationship for years — possibly even decades; there was no need to master the art of the perfect Match.com profile.)

To help you land a date, we asked a handful of dating experts and coaches to weigh in with the most common mistakes they see divorcées making in their profiles.

Read what they had to say – and their advice on how to write a better profile — below:

1. Your profile picture is less than flattering.

Online daters wade through hundreds and hundreds profiles to find one person worth meeting for coffee. Of course they’re making snap judgments about you based solely on your profile photo. That grainy, low-res photo you uploaded from Facebook isn’t doing you any favors – and don’t even think about posting a pic from five years ago.

“Every photo sends a message,” said dating and relationship expert Damona Hoffman. “Don’t think you need to post a photo from back in the day that’s overly sexy to get a date. With clever cropping and your best angle, you can direct people’s eyes to exactly what you want them to notice about you.”

To get casual, totally flattering profile photos, Jeffrey Platts — a dating expert and men’s coach based in L.A. — recommends having a friend snap photos of you any time you’re feeling “sexy, confident and well-dressed” while hanging out.

“It just takes 30 seconds and you’ll be adding to your collection of great photos to choose from,” he said.

2.  You’re boring people to tears in your “about me” section.

Your front-facing, model status profile pic may be what draws people in, but a compelling “about me” section that shows off your personality is what will land you a date. Describing yourself as a “laid-back guy who loves the beach and getting drinks” is the meh-est of meh descriptions.

“That pretty much describes 99 percent of singles,” said Platts. “If I tell you I’m going to buy you any smartphone you want, you wouldn’t just say ‘Thanks, just get me one that makes calls and can surf the web.’ No, you’d tell me get the a 64GB iPhone 6 Plus in white. You want someone to want you because of you, not simply because you’re a warm-bodied male or female.”

To spice up your profile, Platt suggests injecting some humor and personality into it: “Then people who share similar values, interests and lifestyles will gravitate toward you.”

3. Mentioning your ex — or any other failed relationships.

This should go without saying: Don’t bring up your ex or other low-points in your romantic history. Divorce may have taught you what you categorically don’t want in a new partner, but don’t waste valuable space in your profile listing out negative traits you don’t want in your life.  Surprisingly, it’s something Laurie Davis, founder of online dating concierge service eFlirt, said she sees all the time while doctoring the dating profiles of divorcées.

“It sets a negative tone for your profile — not the most attractive quality to lead with!” she said, “It’s best to keep your last relationship, and all the baggage that came with it, out of your first impression.”

4. Your word count is out of control.

Adopt the Goldilocks principle when considering the length of your profile: Not too short, not too long, but just right. You want to tell a story about yourself that’s intriguing but leave the whole story for the dates to come.

“Say just enough in your profile to get them to want to meet in person and reveal the rest there,” said Hoffman.

5. Your username is forgettable.

Sorry, SexyLady432 and Soccerfan1973, but you may want to rethink that username. What you call yourself won’t likely be a deal-breaker for most but it’s worth taking the time to come up with something original and more grown-up than the examples above, said Platt.

“Look, I know that as more and more people sign up for online dating sites, the good usernames get swapped up but there’s still room for creativity and personality,” he said. “Test out several variations until you come up with one that you like and is available. You can always try lumberjackyogi and crossfitqueen.”

6.  You post pics of your kids or talk endlessly about being a parent.

Your kids may be adorable, Honor Roll-making angels but that doesn’t mean they should be the stars of your dating profile. While it’s natural to include details about your kids or life as a parent in your profile, you don’t want to overdo it — and you definitely don’t want to include pics of the kids, Davis said.

“Even if the photos with the kids are simply the most flattering, I’ve’ found that what works best is to keep the focus on you, and you alone, in your photos,” she said. “Crop out the others around you, in particular children.”

7.  You send an awkward first message.

You now have the tools to write a profile that hits all the right marks, but remember: all the hard work you put into your profile can be upended if you send inappropriate messages to people you’re interested in. A mere “hi” or “hey baby” aren’t likely to go over well.

To ensure you’re sending an initial message that won’t offend or bore people, Platt recommends putting it through a “would I ever say this in real life?” litmus test.

“Imagine going up to someone at a bar, saying ‘hi’ and just standing there silently. You wouldn’t, so why do the same thing virtually? And women (and men) get literally hundreds of these messages. I’ve yet to meet a woman who has written back to an initial one-word message.”

To knock it out of the park with your first message, Platt said to “Write something that shows you actually read their profile. And the easiest way to do that is directly mention something that he or she wrote about and ask them a genuinely curious question about it.”

In a sea of “hi” and “hey babys,” Platt said you’re sure to stand out.

The Summer Camp Trend That’s Making a Chic Comeback

vogue editors monogram pajamas

We all know the evergreen packing list essentials (remember, extra underwear and socks are never a bad idea), but curating a weekend getaway wardrobe that is both easy and elevated can prove a bit trickier. This summer, the nostalgia for traditional summer camp style (a place where, in my experience, you were no one without a custom camp sweatshirt emblazoned with your cabin number—bonus points if it was embroidered with your name, too) served as the genesis for monogram mania around the Vogue offices this season.

“Packing for a beach vacation is also the perfect time to experiment with whimsical accessories and bespoke additions,” says Vogue.com Accessories Editor Brooke Ely Danielson. “Think sunglasses in punchy colors, classics like simple white tennis shoes, smartphone cases, all of which are elevated by playful personal touches that feel modern—whether you emboss them with your Twitter handle or decorate them with your favorite emojis.”

Personalized touches are also a nice way to chic-ify otherwise cute, but often predictable, sleepwear staples, such as pajamas and sleep eye masks. And if sporting your own monogram from sunrise until sunset isn’t enough, well then you could always turn your hand to the picnic table: customizable Coca-Cola bottles, personalized aprons, cookies . . . a feast for the eyes all around.

Are You Making the Most of Your Weekends? Upping Your Beauty Game by Summer Activity

Photographed by Patrick Demarchelier, Vogue, April 2013

Weekends are the time for relaxation—but if you’ve suddenly found yourself spending more time couch surfing than hanging ten or exploring the great outdoors this month, it may be time to reevaluate your strategy: There’s nothing as restorative, after all, as the change of pace and perspective that nature can provide—whether that means picnicking in Central Park, sailing the California coast, or hitting the road for an impromptu road-trip-meets-camping adventure. Just as a bag packed with the right swimsuit and cover-up enhances a good day trip, so does a well-conceived arsenal of beauty essentials. Here, four ideas for a perfect Saturday—and the products to match—that will have you outshining Mother Nature.

50 Cent Talks Making Fun Of Himself, Warns Others About Clowning His Bankruptcy Situation

(AllHipHop News) 50 Cent is known for cracking jokes on his fellow rappers, but the G-Unit boss is not afraid to clown himself as well. After the world found out he has filed for bankruptcy, the Queens representative posted a picture on Instagram making fun of the situation.

[ALSO READ: 50 Cent Jokes About Filing For Bankruptcy (PHOTO)]

Yesterday (July 14), 50 was a guest on ESPN2’s His & Hers. Hosts Michael Smith and Jemele Hill asked Fif about his IG picture.

“If you do it to other people, you can’t take yourself that serious. People love tragedy,” said 50. “It’s like the way they’d put LeBron’s face up after the championship. But you was just rooting for LeBron, right? Because it was feeling like he was gonna win it by himself.”

The producer of the hit Starz program Power would not go into much detail about filing for bankruptcy, but 50 did offer a slick warning to any of his rivals that may want to use the situation to send shots his way.

“I watch people do it, and you let them enjoy themselves for a moment. Then it starts to shift, because they realize [me filing for bankruptcy is] not what they think it is,” added 50. “I just watch to see which one of them says something, because I’m gonna see you in a little bit.”

Infographic: Making The Most Of Your Summer Camp Experience

The height of summer sees children of all ages heading off to summer camps across the country, most of whom arrive with a mix of excitement, homesickness, and anticipation. The Onion tells you how to get the most out of the experience:

  • On your first day of camp, establish an infrastructure for a potential coup in case your counselor proves to be tyrannical.
  • You might hear your favorite mealtime beverage referred to as “bug juice,” but don’t worry; it’s just high-fructose corn syrup, butylated hydroxyanisole, and Yellow 5.
  • More than anything, summer camp is an opportunity to develop important life skills, such as identifying the weakest person in your midst.
  • Tell some ghost stories to really spook fellow campers, like the one about how this is one of their last summers before the relentless cruelty of life robs them of their innocence and youth forever.
  • If you are …

How Jennifer Lawrence Is Making the Sensible Summer Wedge Look Cool

Jennifer Lawrence style

Summer in the city can be brutal; between the rising humidity and the bustling crowds of tourists, it’s not easy navigating these streets—and the right footwear choices can make all the difference. Earlier this season, Jennifer Lawrence stepped out in summer’s hottest heel; judging by the look she wore in New York City today, though, it’s clear she isn’t afraid of a sensible shoe.

Her menswear-inspired tuxedo jacket and slouchy boyfriend jeans were a cool counterpoint to the garden party–ready wedge sandals. The 24-year-old actress has always had a soft spot for bucket bags, and the Kenneth Cole one she sported today complemented the sandy hue on the straps of her shoes. Kate Middleton has long been a champion of the wedge as an all-terrain summer shoe (they’re ideal for crossing the lawns at royal engagements without sinking into the grass, after all), and clearly Lawrence is applying that practical approach to a cool city-dwelling milieu. We hear Lawrence is in the market for a pad in Manhattan; here’s hoping her new home has enough storage space for her ever-expanding shoe collection.

Beyoncé Shows the Secret to Making Stripes Figure Flattering

Photo: Courtesy of Beyoncé

It’s officially July Fourth weekend, and with it comes tanning at the beach, lounging by the pool, and summer barbecues. And though the city staycation is fast becoming a popular alternative to fun in the sun, it doesn’t mean you have to eschew stars and stripes altogether.

Spotted on the streets of Manhattan yesterday, Beyoncé showed her patriotism in a blue and white mini. Taking elements from a classic menswear shirt, the wrap dress remixes the angles on horizontal stripes and makes them ultra figure flattering. Another fun twist? The embellished trim picks up on the styling of her quilted purse and strappy sandals.

The Surprising Thing That Could Be Making You Fat And Sick

It’s the public health crisis that rivals obesity and smoking, affecting more than 25 percent of the U.S. population, and killing thousands in the blink of an eye: sleep deprivation. It can devastate your body, compromise your mind and immune system, and lead to diabetes, depression and even death.

According to Liz Vaccariello, editor-in-chief of Reader’s Digest, not enough sleep has potentially devastating consequences. “The stats are crystal clear, and it’s very disturbing. The CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] in 20111, declared sleep deprivation a public health crisis,” explains Vaccariello, whose magazine recently profiled the topic in an articled called “Sounding the Alarm on Sleep.” One quarter of all transportation accidents in the U.S. are linked to sleep deprivation, she points out.

Aside from sleep deprivation leading more than 1,500 transportation-related deaths annually, it can also cause major health issues. “It can make you sick, fat and stupid,” Vaccariello tells The Doctors in the video above. Without proper rest, there can be an increased risk of depression, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and even early death, she explains. Moreover, without adequate sleep, there are changes in our brain chemistry, hormones and metabolism that affect our satiety and physiology. One study showed that people who get two hours less sleep a night than they should are more likely to gain weight. Studies also show that memory, concentration, judgment and decision making can all be affected by lack of sleep.

The good news is that getting enough rest can have an immediate and positive impact on your health. “If I [get a good night’s sleep] tonight, tomorrow is going to be a better day,” points out family medicine physician Dr. Rachael Ross.

Get tips for a better night’s sleep here.

The book is The Blacker's Art of Fly Making, the descriptions of flies for the season of the year as they come out on the water is a work of fly tying literature with significant fly fishing. From my boyhood, I took great delight in ranging along the banks of the beautiful and romantic streams of my native land, Ireland; and having also been for many years a skilful Fly Fisher of no little commendation, in both Great Britain and Hibernia, it is my desire to impart to the world, plainly and easily, the knowledge I have acquired, that all those who wish to become masters of the art, may, by patience and practice, and a close adherence to the instructions I shall lay down, derive the fullest benefit from my experience. The catechism of fly making which I have introduced will be found very curious and instructive to the young beginner, and will afford him every opportunity of retaining the whole process, that when rehearsed in the mind, and perfectly understood, he may apply, with more certain facility, the hand to both material and hook.

Bakery Goofs By Making ‘My Little Tony’ Cake For Birthday Party

An Italian bakery has egg on its face after confusing a request for a “My Little Pony” cake for one featuring an obscure crooner named “Little Tony.”

When the employees of a pastry shop in Gangi, Sicily, were asked to make a birthday cake for a 9-year-old girl’s birthday party, they mistakenly heard “My Little Tony,” instead of “My Little Pony,” the Telegraph reports.

Consequently, the girl’s cake featured a bouffant-haired singer in a white jacket, not a bright pink pony with a blue mane.

The singer on the cake, “Little Tony” Ciacci, was an Elvis-style Italian singer popular in Great Britain and Italy in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Since the girl had never heard of “Little Tony,” officials for Codacons, Italy’s consumer association, said the girl and her family would be within their rights to sue the bakery for a lot of dough, according to the Telegraph.

Eighteen-year-old Sarah has been in the care of her grandparents for the last year, and they recently gained custody of her younger sister — an arrangement Sarah supports, but that her mom believes is unfair.

“I believe my mom is mentally ill right now,” says Sarah. “For a lot of my life, I felt like I’ve been more of the mother in the mother/daughter relationship, and me telling her right from wrong. I definitely feel like it’s not fair for other people having to keep taking responsibility for my mom. My mom had us. We’re her children. I think it’s her responsibility to grow up and take care of us.”

In the video above from Monday’s episode of Dr. Phil, Sarah tells her mom: “I feel like right now you’re just acting like … you’re just not admitting to the mistakes that you know you’ve made. You told me you’re going to come on this show and try to get help, but you can’t sit here and point the finger at everyone else. I understand that, yeah, you believe some things didn’t work out the way they should, and some things were said about you that weren’t true. But if you really want help, you’re going to have man up and say, ‘I shouldn’t have done that. I should have been a better parent. I should have done these things, and I’m willing to change, and I’m willing to be that person.'”

Making the Cut: The Evolution of Diamonds

Diamonds may be forever, but their preferred shape is in constant flux. As tastes and technology have progressed with time, we’ve seen these gems evolve from simple manual executions to dazzlingly complex designs.

Early diamond cutters had limited options compared with their contemporary counterparts; as they were equipped only to polish diamond rough, stones dating from the 1300s echo the shape of the natural crystal structure, says Katherine Palmiter, G.G., jewelry specialist at online auction house Auctionata. Later on, cutters developed more sophisticated tools to wear down the notoriously hard gemstones, using diamond dust and oil to shape and polish them.

To this day, the natural structure still governs the end result, as cutters aim to retain as much of the stone’s original weight as possible. However, as faceting technology evolved, more precise cuts were able to be developed throughout the 20th century.

Modern diamond cutting was further revolutionized by scientific advancements in optics and the study of how light travels through the stone. “Marcel Tolkowsky’s 1919 watershed book on the interactions between light and diamonds forever changed the way diamond rough is treated,” says Palmiter. While the outline of a modern stone may be similar to an earlier shape, the facet arrangement and resulting fire and light return are as different as can be. “The perennial market favorite, the round brilliant cut, is the fruit of centuries of diamond cutting labor,” she adds.

Many modern diamond cuts are variations on this very successful theme. Tolkowsky’s principles have been modified for numerous diamond shapes over the years, notes Palmiter, all with the same goal: a livelier, brighter, bigger looking stone. The methods used to cut ovals, squares, pears and other shapes have all undergone radical overhauls as trends and technology changed in the last hundred years.

But the more things change, the more they stay the same. Though the cuts may change, classic shapes remain in demand, and each one enjoys periods of increased popularity. In fact, many shapes that originated centuries ago remain as desirable as those recently developed. Don’t believe it? See if you can guess the date some of today’s most popular styles first arrived on the market (answers below):

Netflix, Ellen DeGeneres Are Making A ‘Green Eggs And Ham’ TV Series

If you like the Dr. Seuss classic “Green Eggs and Ham,” you’re in luck. You’ll soon be able to watch it in a house and with a mouse, here and there and anywhere!

Hot on the heels of the announcement of Netflix’s “Full House” revival, the streaming service has revealed plans to resurrect another blast from the past. This time, it’s a TV show based on the bestselling 1960 children’s book.

Netflix, with the help of the Dr. Seuss estate, executive producer Ellen DeGeneres and Warner Bros. TV Group, will be creating a 13-episode animated series based on “Green Eggs and Ham,” Variety reported. The show will be available in the 50-plus countries where Netflix operates.

Netflix announced the deal Wednesday with an apt Dr. Seuss-inspired rhyme:

“We’d love to share some happy news
based on the rhymes of Dr. Seuss.
Green Eggs and Ham will become a show
and you’re among the first to know.”

On her talk show this week, DeGeneres said the Dr. Seuss series won’t be available to stream till 2018, but promised that it’d be well worth the wait.

“It’s going to be cutting-edge animation. It’s never been done on television before. It’s very, very cool,” DeGeneres said. “I’m excited about it.”

Louis C.K.’s Master Plan For Making Sure His Kids Don’t Grow Up ‘Weird Or Spoiled’

Worried about raising your kids right? Louis C.K. has been there.

In the April 24 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine, the 47-year-old comedian talked about raising his daughters in New York and making sure they stay down to earth. Here’s what he had to say:

I talk to [my kids] about work, and I hope they both have shitty minimum wage retail jobs when they’re old enough. I really try to be aware of not letting them grow up weird or spoiled, which is easier to do here than it is in L.A. My 13-year-old daughter leaves the house at 7:15 every morning and takes a smelly city bus to school way uptown. It’s like 8 degrees out, and it’s dark and she’s got this morning face and I send her out there to take a bus. Meanwhile, my driver is sitting in a toasty Mercedes that’s going to take me to work once both kids are gone. I could send her in the Mercedes and then have it come back to get me, but I can’t have my kid doing that. I can’t do that to her. Me? I earned that f–ing Mercedes. You better f–ing believe it.

Louis C.K. has opened up about his parenting style in the past. While doing a bit on “parenting, kids and questions,” he said, “I’m not raising children. I’m raising the grownups they’re going to be. I have to raise them with the tools to get through a terrible life. That’s the way I look at it.”

It certainly seems like those kids are developing some solid life skills.
