In Paris in the early 1990s, a group of activists goes to battle for those stricken with HIV/AIDS, taking on sluggish government agencies and major pharmaceutical companies in bold, invasive actions. The organization is ACT UP, and its members, many of them gay and HIV-positive, embrace their mission with a literal life-or-death urgency. Amid rallies, protests, fierce debates and ecstatic dance parties, the newcomer Nathan falls in love with Sean, the group’s radical firebrand, and their passion sparks against the shadow of mortality as the activists fight for a breakthrough.

How to Look Better in One Minute

2015-11-11-1447275447-4702857-04blush.w529.h352.jpg

By Kathleen Hou

Beauty editors and makeup artists often say blush is the stiletto of beauty products — it makes everyone look good. When applied correctly, blush can instantly make you look fresher, more vibrant, and just plain better. I was an unbeliever until the celebrity makeup artist Hung Vanngo offered a demonstration. For this next series of GIFs, the CK One Cosmetics global color ambassador, who’s worked with nearly every Victoria’s Secret angel (among other famous faces), demonstrates how to apply cream blush correctly.

2015-11-11-1447275569-9989587-beauty110403.w529.h352.gif

Step 1: Start by choosing a rosy cream blush. Shades with a slight bit of pink are most natural, since they mimic the tones found in the skin when there is a slight flush. In this case, Vanngo is using CK One Cream and Powder Duo in Grace. Starting from the middle of your cheekbone, take your finger and dot out a slanted line, toward your ear. This also creates a naturally slimming effect.

Step 2: The key to making cream blush look natural is a lot, a lot of blending. The next few steps are all blending. Start to gently pat and blend the line down.

2015-11-11-1447276207-3549882-beauty110405.w529.h352.gif

Step 3: Use your forefinger to pat and blend in a circular downward direction, moving along the cheekbones.

Step 4: Slightly disperse and blend the cheek color up toward the temple of the cheek, as this avoids any harsh blush demarcation lines when you smile.

2015-11-11-1447276321-5356996-hunglook1extra02.w529.h352.gif

Step 5: Blend a tiny bit along the high point of the cheekbone. Note that along these steps, Vanngo didn’t stop to apply more color — that’s right, he spent four steps continuing to blend the color.

Step 6: The natural, flushed look.

‘Minute of silence’ for Europe’s refugees tops Austrian iTunes chart

By Kieran Guilbert LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – A minute’s silence recorded by an Austrian artist to protest against the treatment of migrants in Europe and raise money for refugees in a center near Vienna has topped the country’s iTunes chart, despite only being released on Friday. Proceeds from Raoul Haspel’s track Schweigeminute (“Minute’s Silence”), which beat German DJ Robin Schulz to capture top spot through pre-orders alone earlier this week, will go toward aid for people in the asylum processing center in Traiskirchen. More than 2,000 refugees in Traiskirchen have been sleeping in the open for weeks, braving heat of around 40 degrees Celsius and rainstorms wrapped in blankets on the grass, and Amnesty International last week called their treatment “scandalous”.

The History Of Sneakers In High Fashion In One Short Minute

The rise of “Normcore” has proven that comfort is king, even when it comes to fashion. Any sneaker enthusiast will tell you, that sentiment has rung true long before the days of trendy Birkenstocks and overalls.

A new exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum titled “The Rise Of Sneaker Culture,” which runs from July 10-Oct. 4, 2015, features about 150 sneakers and examines the role the shoe has played in our society. “The Rise of Sneaker Culture is the first exhibition to explore the complex social history and cultural significance of the footwear now worn by billions of people throughout the world,” the museum said in a release.

cortez

In honor of the new exhibit, CNN released “A Brief History Of High Fashion Kicks” Wednesday. The awesome video provides an overview of sneakers involvement in fashion and is a pretty rad history lesson, too.

Check out the video above and for more information on the exhibit, click here.

The Heavy Relationship Is a Password (a Three Minute Refresher on Relationship Normalcy)

2015-06-18-1434654126-1132983-Unknown

I need to know yours for this to work.

◊◊

Couples share lots of things; bank accounts, sometimes a car. That HBO GO account that you’re actually sharing because it’s your ex’s friend’s account. That extra bedroom that she kind of ending up stealing for yoga.

And if you fall into the 50% bracket of the population that has an ex-wife or husband (and thus, insignificant), you might even share the responsibility of raising children. Of course if you have an ex, you probably don’t have a lot of trust in this person, which is why you’re an ex. Perhaps you did at one point but it faded somewhere after… oh, I don’t know, day one after you had kids.

◊◊

Recently, I wrote a blog about what I think is the new modern man; what a modern, 21st and-a-half century man is, something I believe that I am. No doubt, it’s caused an innumerable number of arguments among couples (and for that I’m not sorry). It was kind of my intention.

But this is all part of the renaissance. The new man. We’re open. We’re transparent. We have few things to hide (if any).

But any serious relationship, one in which the topics of, “do we want a dog?” or “do we want kids?” is discussed, needs something other than trust and transparency to work. I need your password. Not to your Instagram or ovulation app (Although lots of folks have long-debated whether sharing passwords for things like email or our phone PIN helps or hurts a relationship (I am in the “it helps” camp), I need the password that will make you happy.

◊◊

Years ago, we would have met our girlfriend or boyfriend through a friend, through work, or God forbid, through grandma whose friend in the nursing home as a granddaughter “who’s just perfect for you.”

A precipitous courtship would then ensue. Several dates. Actual phone calls. Very little texting or social media interaction. I mean actually talking to the person.

Texting while dating can be hazardous. Nuance is oftentimes missed. Sarcasm taken literally. Had you been conversing like normal people, you’d be learning their cues, even their innocent little peccadillos. What annoys them? When to ask and when not to ask “what’s wrong,” or “do you want to talk about it?” Our social passwords back then were easier to figure out than they are today.

◊◊

Think of your relationship as a crop, planted in a pretty, quaint greenhouse (built using renewable bamboo). The password is the Sun. And the process of understanding each other is the water.

Like any crop, we need to nurture and toil over it. A good harvest means the two of you are simpatico. You both understand what the other wants, needs, and desires. Sounds important, right? Sounds like something you should probably know.

But what is equally important, is understanding what she/he doesn’t want, doesn’t need, or doesn’t desire.

The big, $ 44 million question: “How do I get the password?!”

Just ask them for it.

What do they need from you? What does he or she want from you? But don’t neglect the question, “What completely bugs the shit out of you? Because I don’t want to do that.”

It is super-fucking-easy to date somebody. There’s no course to take. No test to ace. Like having children, anyone can do it. Nobody tells you how to do it properly, you just sort of have to learn on your own, by example, or get a little deep with yourself.

What’s difficult is being in a super-fucking-good relationship. One that lasts. One that makes other couples around you hate you for being the “kicking ass and taking names” couple. You’re a team. One that’s completely devoid of resentment, but inundated with adoration for each another.

This needs time. Patience. And practice.

Oh… and that password.

◊◊

6 Frugal and Fabulous Last Minute Christmas Gifts

I’m already done with my holiday shopping, but I understand that some of you out there can’t read a calendar and always need to do things at the last minute. So for you, I made a list of my favorite last minute gifts. It’s kind of like Oprah’s favorite things list, but not everything costs more than the average person earns in a month. In fact, nothing on my list costs more than thirty bucks. So as long as you have a mall in your town, you can find these items at the very last minute. I’m still not sure why you want to wait to buy presents, but that is your business.

Clinique Chubby Sticks
What woman doesn’t want a chubby stick? Get your mind out of the gutter. Women want these chubby sticks because they are purse worthy and safe for travel. Clinique makes eye shadow, lip stick, and blush chubby sticks. They have no applicators and do not require sharpeners.
2014-12-20-Chubby.png

Bath and Body Works Vanilla
I love Bath and Body Works Vanilla lotions and soaps. They even have candles that will make your whole house smell like a bakery. So stop watching that Elf marathon and get over to the Bath and Body Works store now. Be prepared for 782 salespeople to “help” you, though. If you don’t like to talk to people much, like me, you may want to pretend to speak a language other than English. Warning: do not pick Spanish or French.
2014-12-20-BB.jpg

A Great Book
Almost everyone likes to read. Personally, I don’t trust people who hate books. Most of the people on your list would enjoy a book of some sort. Stephen King books usually suck me in like a black hole. My favorite Stephen King book ever is 11/22/63. I could not stop reading it. If self-driving cars were real, I would have read while driving. It’s that good.
2014-12-20-King.png

Gift Cards
Just about any human would appreciate a gift card. If you have dogs or cats on your shopping list, DO NOT get them a gift card. They will eat it. Humans, on the other hand, will find them quite useful. There are a lot of different gift cards out there. Grocery stores and drug stores usually have a display of them, so you don’t even need to go to a particular store to buy one. You can also buy them online, but at this point, there’s a chance it won’t arrive before Christmas. So, put down that cocoa and put on some pants, and get out there. You’ve got cards to buy.
2014-12-20-Giftcard.JPG

Music
Music is one of the best last minute gifts because it can be delivered instantly. You can purchase an album online and have a link emailed to the gift recipient. Then, they can download it to their iPhone or other non-Apple device. Yay for technology covering up for your procrastination!
2014-12-20-AAD.JPG

Be Betty Crocker
You could bake cookies, or a cake, or maybe a pie, depending on your skill level. Personally, I can make tasty cookies, but they tend to look like something the dog tracked through the house. If you enjoy baking, are low on cash, and have a few hours before gift giving time you could bake some holiday magic in your kitchen.
2014-12-20-OreoSnowmanCookieBalls52162.jpg

There you have it. I just saved your behind. You’re welcome. Aren’t you glad you waited until NOW to buy Christmas gifts? Now, put the glowing screen down and go shopping. I hope you can get a parking space.

Disclaimer: I have purchased everything listed because I love these products. I am not being paid by any of the companies above, especially the Kraft people. They would not pay me to advertise their holiday creations because my Oreo snowmen would look they stepped out of a snow zombie apocalypse.

5 Great Last Minute Christmas Gifts For Every Personality

I don’t know where November and December has gone! One minute I was decorating my mermaid costume for Halloween, and the next minute I’m trying to decipher how many calories did I just inhale in creamy eggnog goodness.

If you’re reading this then you know you’re like me and slightly behind schedule.
Ok procrastinators; let’s have a heart to heart. You’re way behind schedule. Can your holiday shopping be completed with less than a week to go? Can your gifts look thoughtful, time consuming, and as adorable as your personality? For all the special people in your life that deserve a gift, here are some great last minute ideas.

1. For the Entreprenuer

2014-12-19-watch.jpg

A watch on someone’s wrist says, “I’m organized, classy, and trendy. I value my time and like to stay on top of things. In other words, I have it together.” For the entrepreneur in your life, a watch is thoughtful yet practical. Nothing says “Like a Boss” like a Rolex.

2. For the Fashionista

For any fashionista on the go, the crossbody bag is the ultimate necessity. This fun Kate Spade bag is not only functional, but also covered in glitter. Its gold-embossed hardware and strap tone down the bag just enough to make this a perfect “day to night” accessory. Katespade.com

3. For the Writer

This is a fantastic and unusual gift for the writer in your life. Detailed in “newspaper style” print, this bag is great for a weekend bag for traveling or one for holding the writing supplies, laptop, and heading to the nearest coffee shop. Fancy.com

4. For the Athlete

The Fitbit Charge not only keeps track of your exercise, it keeps track of your overall activity for the day. With a built in heart rate monitor, pedometer, and gps, the Athlete in your life will be able to monitor their calories burned, distance, or steps taken. The battery life is extremely long; lasting 7 to 10 days.

5. For the Chef

We all have someone in our lives who not only loves to cook, but whose house we love to eat at. The Black Truffle is seen as the “black diamond of cusine.” Why not treat them to an ingredient that they probably wouldn’t buy for themselves, but that they will enjoy?

Good luck out there shoppers!
