Three Arrested After Double Murder Of Mississippi Cops

Earlier this morning (May 10), a pair of brothers and a woman were arrested in connection to the shooting deaths of two Mississippi police officers. The shooting happened after a routine traffic stop, igniting a statewide manhunt that ended without resistance.

The incident took place in the town of Hattiesburg,  located in the southeast portion of the state. Around 8:30 p.m. CST, one officer pulled over a gold Escalade one of the brothers were driving. As a second officer arrived on the scene, shots began to ring out. At the end of the melee, 34-year-old Benjamin Deen and 25-year-old Liquori Tate were shot dead.

More from the Clarion-Ledger:

Authorities arrested Curtis Banks, 26, and Marvin Banks, 29, and Joanie Calloway, 22, early Sunday morning. They were taken to Troop J of the Mississippi Highway Patrol, where they were to be questioned by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.

Marvin Banks and Calloway have been charged with two counts each of capital murder, and Curtis Banks is charged with two counts of accessory after the fact to capital murder.

At this point, authorities are not discussing the motive. They said interviews with the suspects are ongoing. Toxicology tests are also pending.

The trio split apart after the shooting, with their arrests occurring at varying times throughout Sunday morning. Two women drove by and saw Deen and Tate suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the women said the officers said to her, “Am I dying? I know I’m dying. Just hand me my Walkie-Talkie.”

Tate was a recent police academy graduate, boasting of his accomplishment last June via Facebook. Deen was a K-9 officer who was named Officer Of The Year in 2012. Police haven’t been killed in Hattiesburg in the last 30 years.

FBI Looks Into Hanging Death Of Black Mississippi Man

The case of missing a Mississippi Black man has ended in tragedy after his body was discovered hanging from a tree Thursday (Mar. 19) evening. Otis Byrd, 54, was reported missing near the top of the month and his death has sparked an investigation by the FBI and the Justice Department.

According to several breaking reports, including accounts by CNN and CBS, Byrd had been missing since March 2. Local authorities in Claiborne County discovered Byrd’s hanging body after conducting a ground search. It is too soon to determine whether or not Byrd’s death was a homicide or self-inflicted.

According to the Clarion-Ledger, Byrd went missing after a trip to the casino on March 2 and the family didn’t report him missing until six days later. The Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department received the report that day, with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation receiving the report on March 13.

More from the Clarion-Ledger:

Sheriff Marvin Lucas said that’s when they found the body hanging about a half mile from his last known residence around 10:21 a.m. Thursday. He said during the search for Byrd, they never ruled out that he could have met with foul play.

“We didn’t close down any options because we really didn’t know what had happened to him,” Lucas said. “We can’t rule anything out right now.”

The sheriff’s department contacted the FBI for forensic and investigative assistance.

The last time Byrd was seen, a friend was dropping him off at the Riverwalk Casino in Vicksburg on March 2.

The Mississippi Department of Corrections shared with media outlets that Byrd served 25 years in prison for the 1980 murder of Lucille Trim in Claiborne County. Byrd robbed Trim of $ 101 in the killing and he was convicted of capital murder in October of that year. Byrd was paroled in November 2006.

The Mississippi Southern District of the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division have joined in with the overall investigation.

Mississippi School Board Fights To Block Gay-Straight Alliance From Forming

A Mississippi school board has rewritten the district’s rules on school clubs after a student expressed interest in forming what the superintendent called “gay clubs.”

According to the Clarion-Ledger, a student at Brandon High School in Rankin County approached a teacher about starting a Gay-Straight Alliance chapter, which is aimed at creating safe spaces for students regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. According to the teacher, the student sent the proposal for the new club to school administrators.

On Wednesday, the Rankin County School Board voted to require students to get permission from parents before joining clubs. Officials deny that they knew about the club before making their decision, although superintendent Lynn Weathersby met recently with county administrators and the school board attorney to discuss how to legally “limit organizations like that on campus that we don’t want to endorse and don’t want.”

Brandon High School did not return The Huffington Post’s request for comment.

The school board’s decision was quickly condemned by advocacy groups and civil rights organizations.

“This policy sends a harmful message to LGBT students in Rankin County that they are not welcomed within their classrooms, at school functions or on the bus,” said Mississippi’s Human Rights Campaign director Rob Hill in a statement. “The board’s actions tell LGBT students that they should be ashamed of who they are and that their lives are valued less than their peers.”

“I was greatly disturbed when I heard what was said by the superintendent and his board attorney, because he should know better,” American Civil Liberties Union Legal Director Charles Irvin told WAPT. “What I want to see changed is that you not try to hide behind abstinence only to say that is the rationale for keeping students from being able to assemble.”

Though school board officials stated that the new restrictions apply to all clubs and are not unlawful, Rankin County School Board attorney Freddie Harrell also claimed that a GSA club might violate the state’s abstinence-only education policies. Courts have rebuked school districts that have made similar arguments in attempting to block GSAs from forming, finding that clubs are dedicated to promoting tolerance and raising awareness of prejudice in schools.

According to the ACLU, 15 federal courts have upheld students’ rights to form GSAs under the Equal Access Act, which prevents schools from discriminating against clubs based on the content of the meetings.

Mississippi is one of nine states with restrictive laws that maintain strict goals for teaching students about sexuality and essentially bar teachers from educating students about LGBT issues.
