Neiman Marcus’ Ken Downing Designs Flashy Interiors for Model Residence at Fifteen Hudson Yards

DOWNING BY THE RIVER: For those who have wondered what it’s like to live like Neiman Marcus fashion director Ken Downing, wait no longer.
Through a Related Cos.-Neiman Marcus effort, Downing has designed and styled the interior of a model residence at Fifteen Hudson Yards. Downing’s 1,464-square-foot model residence has two bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms and a price tag of nearly $ 4.3 million. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Rockwell Group, Fifteen Hudson Yards has 285 condos varying in size from one bedroom to four bedrooms.
As a veteran member of the four-fashion-week pack (and the air miles to prove it), Downing gleaned inspiration from the world’s fashion capitals for his at-home curation. His fondness for art collecting was another factor in the final edit. There is also an abundance of color throughout the apartment including pink walls and ceiling, a Venetian-style glass chandelier in purple, a multicolored geometric style rug and a vibrant column painted by Brooklyn artist Nathan Green in the master suite, not to mention the turquoise floor-to-ceiling interior in the condo’s library. Reflective surfaces are meant to bring the West Side view indoors.

Agency Linden Staub Aims to Rewrite the Rules of Model Management

LONDON — The modeling industry has been under the microscope more than ever this past year as a result of the rise of the #MeToo movement, allegations against leading photographers about sexual harassment and this week’s Talent Protections Act being signed into law in California — according to which, talent agencies need to provide educational materials on sexual harassment prevention, retaliation, and reporting resources to their clients.
Aware of the pressing need for change in the industry, Tala Davies and Esther Kinnear-Derungs founded agency Linden Staub. They’ve been attempting to rewrite the rules of model management for three years, even before the #MeToo movement took hold.
They only represent models as the “mother agency,” which means they retain control over the strategy and big decisions around the models’ career trajectories. They have also implemented a next-day payment policy for the talent on their books, and attempt to educate them about the industry.
They’ve already helped create breakthrough personalities, including Maxim Magnus, the transgender model who has been a champion for LGBTQ rights and has been featured in an array of high-profile campaigns from Gucci to Stella McCartney and Tom Ford.
Finn Buchanan, who identifies as gender-fluid, is their next rising star and made waves

Cannes 2018: Model Petra Nemcova Makes the Case for Sustainable Red-Carpet Dressing With Chopard, Livia Firth

NEW APPROACH: Model and philanthropist Petra Nemcova has spent two weeks in Cannes attending red-carpet events and premieres in sustainably made gowns and accessories.
As the festival comes to a close, Nemcova said she has seen the message of sustainability grow stronger than ever on the Cannes red carpet and that a shift in mind-set has been brewing throughout the film festival, on the part of celebrities, designers and stylists alike.
“I’ve been seeing things change in the last two weeks, more than ever. Just before the festival, there was also the Met Gala, where models like Gisele Bündchen wore sustainable gowns, so everything is coming together,” said Nemcova, who teamed with Chopard and eco-campaigner Livia Firth on the project to encourage designers to rethink the ways they design for the red carpet, as part of Firth’s ongoing “Green Carpet Challenge” initiative.
“It might not be for everyone but the last weeks were so important for this movement and it’s inevitable that more and more stylists will now start looking for sustainable choices,” added Nemcova, who was joined by the likes of Cate Blanchett and Penélope Cruz in her mission to promote sustainable red-carpet dressing.

EXCLUSIVE: Model Christopher Cates Pens Letter Calling for Action Against Harassment

As the uproar continues over sexual harassment in industries stretching from entertainment to media to finance, the fashion world has remained relatively on the sidelines – until now.
On Saturday, The New York Times published a long-rumored story about alleged harassment of male models by the photographers Bruce Weber and Mario Testino. Both men, via statements their lawyers gave to the Times, vigorously denied the allegations made in the story, although Conde Nast and Conde Nast International both said Saturday that they would be severing ties with the two photographers – at least for now.
The Times’ story comes several months after model Cameron Russell created an Instagram account on which anonymous individuals posted stories about their mistreatment in the industry. Last October, Terry Richardson was dropped by the leading fashion magazine publishers but only after years of allegations surrounding his behavior, while model Jason Boyce filed a lawsuit against Weber in December claiming the photographer harassed him. Weber has denied those claims, as well.
In November, 27-year-old British model Edie Campbell penned an exclusive letter for WWD to the fashion industry in which she said, “We operate within a culture that is too accepting of abuse, in all of its manifestations,” going

J.W. Anderson Nixes London Men’s Show to Pursue Coed Model

HIS AND HERS: The coed juggernaut keeps gathering steam.
One of London’s most anticipated men’s shows, J.W. Anderson, will vacate that calendar from January and shift to a coed display timed with the British capital’s fashion week for women in February.
The fall 2018 collections are to be paraded jointly on Feb. 17, and the London-based brand will stage two shows a year and not four.
In the past month alone, Balenciaga and Salvatore Ferragamo are among brands shifting to a combined women’s and men’s format from next season.
Etro, Dsquared2, Calvin Klein, Burberry, Kenzo, Moschino, Vivienne Westwood, Tom Ford and Cédric Charlier are among others to have already jumped on the bandwagon.
Generally, having one display instead of two per season allows brands to reduce costs, while presenting a cohesive fashion message that works for many labels in an increasingly gender-blurry world — and one increasingly thin on men’s fashion publications.
Prized for his fast-paced shows and daring designs, Anderson was recently honored by the British Fashion Council as British Designer of the Year for Women’s Wear for his J.W. Anderson collection and Accessories Designer of the Year for Loewe during a gala event at Royal Albert Hall.

Model Claims Russell Simmons Sexually Assaulted Her At 17

Explosive allegations have surfaced regarding Def Jam Recordings co-founder Russell Simmons. In a new story from the Los Angeles Times, model Keri Claussen Khalighi claims that the business mogul sexually assaulted her in the presence of Brett Ratner, who also has been accused of similar actions.

From the Times:

Ratner was an up-and-coming music video director and a protege of Simmons, the Def Jam Recordings mogul. They took Khalighi to dinner one night in 1991 at Mr. Chow in New York, and then back to Simmons’ apartment to show her a music video they’d been working on.

Quickly, Simmons began making aggressive sexual advances, yanking off her clothes, Khalighi said.

“I looked over at Brett and said ‘help me’ and I’ll never forget the look on his face,” she recalled. “In that moment, the realization fell on me that they were in it together.”

Khalighi said that Simmons, who was then about twice her age, tried to force her to have intercourse. “I fought it wildly,” she said. He eventually relented and coerced her to perform oral sex, she alleged. “I guess I just acquiesced.”

Ratner, meanwhile, “just sat there and watched,” she said.

Simmons has since published a statement in reactions to the allegations, saying that the time spent with Khalighi was consensual, adding they spent two days together. Ratner, via an attorney, says he has no recollection of the events. The director has been accused of sexual harassment by six women so far.

Here’s the Full Model Line Up for Victoria’s Secret Show 2017

HONG KONG–After a last minute scramble over which models would be permitted to walk the Victoria’s Secret show, taking place in Shanghai for the first time, the final line-up has been revealed.
The group of 55 models gathered on Saturday morning for a press photo call at Shanghai’s Mercedes-Benz arena, clad in jeans and black patterned bomber jackets. As previously reported, the line-up is sans Gigi Hadid, Irina Sharipova, Kate Grigorieva, Julia Belyakova and Dasha Khlystun. The models, alongside Katy Perry who was scheduled to perform, reportedly encountered visa troubles.
The taping will take place on Nov. 20, with the U.S. broadcast set for Nov. 28. Victoria’s Secret has not yet clarified whether Chinese audiences will be able to watch the show, other than via pirated livestreams.
Lais Ribeiro has the honor of wearing the $ 2 million Fantasy Bra themed on “champagne nights.”  Elsa Hosk will also be donning a special outfit, in honor of the brand’s 15-year anniversary with Swarovski as the sole provider of crystal embellishments for the show.

Target’s Only Plus-Size Male Model: Shopping Was ‘Terrifying’

For all the strides being made to make fashion more inclusive, one group of people is still notably absent from the conversation: men.

Zach Miko is helping to change that. Miko is an actor, musician and model who is 6’6″ with a 40-inch waist. He is also, according to online media outlet MicTarget’s only plus-size male model. In a new interview with the site, he recalls his experience with the brand thus far as being ”the first time I ever put on clothes that made me feel good about myself.”

That discouraging sentiment is unfortunately not so uncommon. Many people have frustrations with shopping and finding clothing that fits the right way. Miko talked to The Huffington Post and explained his own relationship with shopping prior to being cast by Target.

“I didn’t shop. I wore the same clothes for over a decade at a time until they basically fell off of me. Shopping for clothing was terrifying and embarrassing. You get a sick feeling walking into the ‘trendy’ stores knowing for a fact that there is nothing to fit you. So I just didn’t shop. My wife made a comment this summer when I was wearing a baggy pair of shorts, about how old and out of date they were. Then she saw a picture of 15-year-old me from high school, wearing those exact same shorts,” he said.

Miko praises the brand for its steps toward acceptance, saying he’d “love to help men feel as good about themselves as Target made me feel.” Target, however, has not always had the best relationship with its plus-size customers. Recently, it has made strides through launching a new line and working with influencers to promote it, but this most recent development is arguably even more important in that it finally brings men into the conversation. And Miko admits men have just as many insecurities as women.

“As a man in America, you are raised with this idea of macho masculinity,” Miko said. “What’s most important to a guy is confidence. Confidence is an amazing thing, but the way that this specific masculine confidence is stressed, guys are brought up believing that being unconfident or having insecurity is considered weakness. Men become ashamed of how they feel about themselves so they hide it, they never speak of it. This isn’t fair to themselves. And it’s not fair to women either. Because when these insecurities are internalized so deeply, men project these ideas on to women.”

For now, Miko is playing an integral part in shifting things in the right direction, and enjoying it. “You show up in the morning to a beautiful studio in Tribeca or Soho or some other beautiful abbreviated NYC neighborhood. Then they feed you egg whites, fruit and yogurt with La Colombe coffee. Then you sit in hair and makeup, where an insanely stylish artist makes you look like you’re the lead in a Taylor Swift video, the one where she doesn’t break your heart,” he said.

While he told The Huffington Post he hasn’t “been in the game long enough to experience the ‘bad’ parts of modeling,” he says the whole experience is pretty surreal. “If you told 13-year-old me that I would be a model living in New York City, I would probably still be laughing now.”

Meet the Model Turned Accessories Designer, Who’s Dries Van Noten’s Secret Weapon

sylvia van der klooster

With soulful eyes and dramatic cheekbones that recall a latter-day Vermeer painting, it’s easy to see why model Slyvia van der Klooster was plucked from a small farming town in Holland and thrust into the fashion spotlight back in the late ’90s. In a recent email interview, the Dutch beauty said that the best birthday present she ever got was making her runway debut for Prada when she was just 20 years old.

She soon became part of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s famiglia, too; for years both she and Giovanna Battaglia, now a much-photographed stylist, were the fit models for the house. Dolce & Gabbana weren’t the only ones to fall under Van der Klooster’s spell, she was a face of Versace beauty and walked for British showmen John Galliano and Alexander McQueen. Eighteen years later, and she’s still walking the runway.

These days, Van der Klooster does fittings and walks for Dries Van Noten, the romantic Antwerp-based designer, whose studio is a quick train ride from Amsterdam, Van der Klooster’s hometown, and just as bicycle friendly. She is a woman on the go, and on the rise: The demand for the handmade organic leather handbag often outstrips supply (though fellow Dutch model Saskia de Brauw scored one); her first movie, Debiel, is released this month; and then there are those street style photographers to pose for . . . .

Here, Van der Klooster talks about her inimitable style—a mash-up of vintage, prints, and flannel—working with Dries, and the Céline skirt that got away.

How would you describe your style?
My style is a mix of prints and colors. I don’t even own anything black. I have always had a crush on the ’70s and the grunge era, so I dress with a lot of layers and mix all kinds of prints and proportions. My closet is full of Dries Van Noten, which is fantastic to mix. His clothes are seasonless, so they suit me very well.

What are your favorite pieces in your closet right now?
The purple velvet boots from Dries Fall 2015—they are heavenly—and my flower-printed coat from Dries as well.

When did you start working with Dries?
I walked for Dries in the late ’90s, three times I think. He was always my absolute personal favorite. Three years ago I started doing the fittings with him in Antwerp. I live in Amsterdam and it’s only an hour and half away from his office.

What’s it like?
We start three or four months before the show with fittings. It is so very inspiring to see a Dries collection come together, as I said, I have been a fan for as long as I can remember and love the humble mentality of the Belgian people in general. Dries and his team are the nicest, down-to-earth people who work super hard. It doesn’t even feel like work sometimes because I am very interested in his way of thinking when it comes to making a collection.

How did you get into bag design?
I started making bags four years ago; I went to a bag-making school in the south of Holland where you learn everything from scratch: patterns, cutting, stitching. I make all my bags myself with organic vegetable-tanned leather. It takes me about a week to make one. Right now I have a long waiting list of people who want to order one, so I try to make them in between my work as a model.

Do you have any tips for dressing for bike riding?
Anything goes on a bike! I have [worn] a long evening gown on my bike to go to a Dutch Vogue party. [When I do that] I try to either tuck it under my bottom on the saddle or put a knot in it—you become creative. I lost a Céline skirt once because it got stuck in the wheel. I hope that never happens again.

Do you dress differently in Paris than at home?
Yes, in Holland I am more practical, especially when I work on my bags. In Paris I dress up more, [in] heels, dresses. I love how people dress in Paris as well, [and] that gives me more inspiration to dress up.

Do you have a favorite shopping spot in Paris?
I always love to go to Kiliwatch, the vintage store close to Rue Étienne Marcel. I always find something there.

Model Takes Ill at Michael Kors, Delays Show

KORS DELAY: The Michael Kors show was delayed about 25 minutes because one of the models, named Ondria Hardin of DNA Models, became ill, and paramedics from New York-Presbyterian were called and took her away in a stretcher. She was treated outside the Spring Studios venue at 50 Varick Street for about 15 minutes with an oxygen mask, said one onlooker. A spokeswoman for Michael Kors said following the show, “She was unwell and cognizant. She got treatment immediately, and that’s why we didn’t start the show. The paramedics came. There was no point in taking a chance. She was with her agent. It’s a lot for these girls to endure.”
One of the dressers backstage said the scene was alarming when Ondria was taken away on a stretcher. Ondria was all dressed and ready to go, wearing a crimson silk georgette scarf dress.

Former Model Neha Kapur Launches Hensely Line

With her new line Hensely, Neha Kapur hopes to bring a sense of relaxed luxury to the Los Angeles fashion scene. A former model and Miss India 2006, Kapur, who is married to “The Big Bang Theory” actor Kunal Nayyar, said her first collection for spring was inspired by the movement and fluidity of dance. The silks and linens are cut to drape gracefully on the body and most of the floor-length gowns and wide-leg pants are meant to be worn with flats.
Born and raised in New Delhi, Kapur, 32, studied fashion design at Pearl Academy. She was discovered by Elite Model Management at age 18 and became one of India’s best-known models, making the covers of Vogue, Elle and L’Officiel and walking in every New Delhi Fashion Week for the past 14 years. “I think that’s where my desire to become a designer was conceived. Every time a new season rolled out, these designers had great ideas to express,” she said. “Walking the runway was actually the real teacher — knowing the fall of a garment, how it fits you, how the sleeves should fall, how does it photograph.”
Hensely is designed in Los Angeles, manufactured in New York and

How One Model Went From Reality TV to Fronting the Fashion Campaign Everyone’s Talking About

hillier bartley

The launch of Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley’s luxurious new label, Hillier Bartley, brought with it more than a wealth of luxurious sportswear. The design duo’s first campaign—a soft-focus image completely in line with the “rock-’n’-roll femininity” Bartley described to Vogue’s Sarah Mower—has introduced the world to modeling’s rising star Aida Becheanu. As one of the contestants on Romania’s Next Top Model back in 2011, the 20-year-old Becheanu has successfully made the transition from reality television to high fashion—much like TV alums Suvi Koponen and Aamito Lagum before her.

Describing the Top Model experience as somewhat surreal and “completely different” from the actual modeling industry, Becheanu has no plans to reprise her television moment. The time she spends in front of the camera now is with key photographers like David Sims, who shot her for both the Hillier Bartley ads and a slick story for Arena Homme Plus. Sims’s pared-down style suits Becheanu to a tee. “Working with him feels natural,” says Becheanu. “It didn’t even feel like work—he wants you to show your personality instead of simply posing, and I love that.”

Besides getting to shoot with Sims, appearing in the Hillier Bartley ads came with additional perks, namely a first look at the collection, including its covetable velvet-patched sweaters and exotic accessories. With its focus on quality and subtlety, the line’s pieces meshed well with Becheanu’s understated tastes. “The clothes are totally my style, and the quality was really beautiful,” says Becheanu. “Luella [Bartley] and David [Sims] were both so wonderful on set, so it was just a pleasure to have such a great time during my very first campaign.” Now Becheanu has her sights set on New York. “I’m concentrated on my work at the moment—I’m excited for my first season here in New York. I just arrived a few days ago and I can’t wait.”

New York Fashion Week Model Essentials: Accessories First

headscarf

Though model-off-duty style encompasses a variety of trends (and personal interpretations), certain items have become so prevalent that they can be found within the wardrobes of nearly every model worth her Instagram following—from fresh faces to superstars. With leggy beauties from around the world currently descending on New York for the beginning of fashion month, these standards are certain to become even more ubiquitous in the coming weeks. From oversize shades perfect for blocking out paparazzi flashbulbs to sneakers so luxe the idea of playing sports in them seems like sacrilege, these are the model-approved essentials for New York Fashion Week—making model-spotting (or dressing the part) that much easier.

Hats

Wide-Brimmed Hats

A summertime staple for any self-respecting street style subject, a wide-brimmed hat can elevate even the most basic ensemble. Often favored by girls whose style skews bohemian, the chapeau has been especially popular this summer—appearing on everyone from Lily Aldridge to Jourdan Dunn.

Retro Sunglasses

While normal shades can render the wearer anonymous, models favor standout styles that command attention—cat-eyes, oversize tortoiseshell frames, and mirrored aviators abound.

Luxury Trainers

A classic pair of Stan Smiths is nice, but lately models have stepped up their shoe game, reaching for limited-edition, customized, and exclusive shoes. Joan Smalls’s pristine Air Force 1s and Jasmine Sanders’s Reeboks by way of Melody Ehsani set the standard.

Chokers

Nothing says offbeat muse with a vague Victorian-by-way-of-the-nineties like a black ribbon choker. With the youngest generation of models embracing all things retro (however recently), the return of the choker was inevitable.

Souvenir Jackets

In keeping with the trend from the menswear and Resort runways, models have been opting for embroidered souvenir jackets in lieu of the traditional leather bombers.

Head Scarves and Wraps

Colorful head scarves have become de rigueur for bad hair days and beyond. More than simply cover-ups, the colorful, richly patterned accessories can serve to represent a girl’s heritage—as in the case of Angolan Maria Borges, who sported multiple head scarves off-duty during her country’s Fashion Week.

It Bags

It bags come and go, but you can always expect one to show up on the shoulder of a top model. While girls often receive their purses as designer gifts, many are more than willing to spend their hard-earned cash on the latest handbag du jour, and this season, found their favorites in the Gucci Dionysus and Chloé Drew bags.

Model Julia van Os Weighs In on Motorcycles and Miles Teller

julia van os

Dutch model Julia van Os is ready to make waves. After walking more than 40 shows in her first season and appearing in Fall campaigns for the likes of Calvin Klein Jeans and Alexander McQueen, Van Os is a rising star worth learning more about. Here, the fresh face breaks it down in her own words.

Finishing high school was more important to her than breaking into fashion.
“I signed myself up for a modeling contest in CosmoGirl with a friend when I was thirteen years old. It was honestly more of a joke; I didn’t expect anything to come from it. To my surprise I won, and that’s how I came into contact with my mother agency, Future Faces, in Amsterdam. However, I really did not want to start modeling until after I had graduated high school, which is why I’ve only recently started full time.”

She’s handy with a sewing machine.
“I don’t think I was that interested in fashion [before modeling], but I’ve always liked clothing. I could get lost in a good vintage store for hours. I also liked designing and making my own things, like dresses on the sewing machine. I was always busy turning my jeans into shorts, cutting and dyeing my T-shirts, that kind of stuff.”

If you see her on the back of a motorcycle, don’t tell her agents!
“I had a driver in Milan, and sometimes when I was in a big hurry to go from show to show, he would show up on his motorcycle instead of in his car, to avoid traffic. We didn’t tell my agency! They don’t want the models to go on motorcycles because it’s too dangerous. So we’d secretly go racing through the city all day on the motorcycle. That was a lot of fun!”

Modeling has taught her not to take things too seriously.
“You just have to shake all of that off. If you take every ‘no’ that you get personally, you will absolutely torture yourself. Of course, it’s good to be motivated and dedicated, but you also have to take a step back now and then, to get everything into perspective. If I start to freak out about something, I always try to think: In a year from now, this probably won’t matter and I’ll be laughing about it.”

Celebrity crush?
Miles Teller.”

If she could raid anyone’s closet?
“That would have to be FKA twigs’s.”

If she could meet one person from any era?
“Stephen Hawking.”

She may have a slight coffee addiction.
“My biggest vice is probably drinking way too much coffee at any given point—that or overindulging in chocolate!”

Next big purchase?
“Right now I want a nice big cashmere sweater because it’s cozy and always timeless.”

To borrow from Proust, her idea of perfect happiness?
“Happiness is waking up on a Sunday morning to have breakfast in your pj’s with the people you love.”

Watch This Face: The Rise of Model Alisa Ahmann

alisa ahmann

While it can take years for a new face to become a fashion fixture, typically when success comes calling, it comes quick. Just five years ago, Alisa Ahmann and her sisters walked into a modeling agency in their hometown of Stuttgart, Germany, on a whim. Though the tall, blonde, and striking Ahmann sisters had never considered modeling until a family friend suggested it, much to their surprise, the four siblings were signed on the spot. “I was only sixteen, so visiting an agency seemed like a fun idea,” says Ahmann, “We all started modeling, just testing and doing small jobs locally.”

It didn’t take long for fashion’s biggest names to catch notice of Ahmann’s aristocratic bone structure and large, bright blue-green eyes; the model was tapped for a Calvin Klein Collection exclusive by casting directors, Maida Gregori Boina & Rami Fernandes last year. Given the brand’s reputation for launching new faces—models like Karlie Kloss and Toni Garrn began their careers as Calvin exclusives—the pressure was high. And keep in mind that Ahmann wasn’t just walking in the brand’s Fall show, she was opening it, an experience that hindsight has cast as larger than life. “I don’t even know how I handled opening Calvin that season,” says Ahmann, “at the time I didn’t realize how important it would be, but when I look back on it I realize it was the best start I could have possibly had.”

And that appears to be the truth: Ahmann has gone on to become one of the most in-demand models currently working. In less than a year she’s landed appearances in and covers for several international editions of Vogue, campaigns for brands like Gucci and Alberta Ferretti, and a continuous stream of runway appearances for labels like Hermès and Chloé. The whirlwind success has brought with it a wealth of new experiences, including the opportunity for transformation. “The Saint Laurent girl is very different from the Oscar de la Renta girl,” quips Ahmann (who walked for the latter last season), “every show offers you a chance to become someone different, to play with all these new characters. I love acting, so when they start changing my hair to different colors or putting me in really unusual outfits it just puts me in the best mood.” Her ability to be a quick-change artist has not gone unnoticed by photographers like Mario Testino and David Sims, either.

When it comes to the future, the model hopes to follow in the footsteps of fellow do-good catwalkers like Christy Turlington Burns and Natalia Vodianova, whose big careers are balanced by their active altruism. “In the future I want to devote more time to charity work,” says Ahmann, “I come from a close family, and I feel like I had a wonderful childhood. Every child deserves to grow up safely, so if I can do something to help children dealing with poverty, or homelessness that would be amazing.” Just as amazing as her career is turning out, don’t you think?

We Are Having a Model Marriage Moment Right Now

model engagements

No, it’s not just your imagination—everyone really is getting married. Just glance at the catwalks (by way of Instagram) to see that models are among those now taking the whole summer love thing to another level: Just this past weekend, Victoria’s Secret Angel Candice Swanepoel announced her engagement to longtime model boyfriend Hermann Nicoli. In a nod to his Brazilian heritage (or a shared love of hip-swiveling), Swanepoel announced the genetically blessed union in a video of the duo enjoying a romantic dance complete with the caption “Meu eterno namorado”—or “my boyfriend forever” in Portuguese.

But Swanepoel isn’t the only runway strutter to receive an invitation to walk down the aisle—not even the only one to receive one on the beach. Street style siren Hanne Gaby Odiele was popped the question in Vieques, Puerto Rico, last week by her longterm boyfriend, John Swiatek, a DJ who also works for Acne Studios. In happy news for street style photographers, the pair often wears similar duds, from matching biker jackets on a walk down the Williamsburg Bridge and sun-glazed sporty tanks on vacation, to matching oversize white tees on rooftops. We’re betting this will be a stylish walk not down the runway, but to the altar for both these couples.

Raw and Exposed: Deep Inside a Black Porn Model, Part Two

As you recall, my three-part series entitled “Raw and Exposed: Deep Inside a Porn Model,” is an unvarnished, thought-provoking and candid interview with adult performer Dawg Dixon (Dawgdixon.com), an African-American who’s worked for the black gay hardcore porn companies Blackbreeders and Forbidden Funk Media. Part One explored why Dixon entered adult entertainment “late in the game” — when he was nearly 40 years old. Additionally, Dawg served up the naked truth about his journey as a porn star.

In Part Two of “Raw and Exposed,” Dawg thrusts us into the inner workings of the gay sex trade. “Fas-cinating,” as the iconic Mr. Spock of “Star Trek” has uttered on more than a few occasions.

EVANS: Dawg, thanks again for sitting down with me.

DIXON: My pleasure, Wyatt.

EVANS: Are “ya” ready for me to once again “git all up in yo’ bizness?” (I josh.)

DIXON: Bring it! (He flashes one “helluva” infectious grin.)

EVANS: Let’s just jump in. What are the pitfalls of porn?

DIXON: Ego. Greed. Low self-esteem. Drugs/addiction.

EVANS: The first three are pretty self-explanatory. So, let’s discuss the issue of drugs. (Pause.) I’ve heard from various corners that the industry uses drugs to control talent.

DIXON: Because I’ve only been on the sets of Blackbreeders and Forbidden Funk, I can’t speak to other adult companies and their drug policies. I do know that the aforementioned don’t provide drugs to us models — other than male performance enhancers, if needed. Let me add that uncontrolled addiction will destroy any plans for success in any industry.

EVANS: Dawg, what’s your stance on mandatory HIV testing in porn?

DIXON: I have a background in HIV outreach, testing and education and have worked in the field for more than 15 years. I believe in patient confidentiality laws. Mandatory on-the-job HIV-testing in a non-health care environment is ridiculous! First, do we test just models or the whole adult industry? On most porn sets, the crew wear multiple hats: some do “oil and fluff,” some do body fluid clean-up, etc. And, let’s get real: a person’s HIV status can change from one test to the next.

EVANS: What about behavior on the set? Any rivalries? Backstabbing? Blow-ups? Yo: “Inquiring minds wanna know!” (I’m chuckling, rather mischievously.)

DIXON: (Smiling.) That’s a rather juicy question, Wyatt. The problems I notice on the set between performers arise when porn actors date each other. A lot of times they don’t want the directors to know that. So when couples aren’t paired with each other, and their co-stars start getting “familiar” with each other — that’s when the claws come out.

EVANS: Seriously? Whoa!

DIXON: Yep. Fighting on the set because of that s**t can cause major problems. It slows/stops production. It gets folks fired, with no pay or transportation home. Look: no one wants you on their set with B.S.! This is a J.O.B., and it’s always about the money. Models should be thinking: “If my partner and I behave and do a great job, we are building our individual brands. And, there’s the potential to create a joint brand, so that we can make even more money.”

DIXON: “Tag team couples” can make a lot of cash through filming and escorting. People love to watch couples f**k! Bobby Blake and Flex-Deon, Slim Thug and Felon just to name a few. We (models) are on the porn set for one reason, and one reason only: to f**k for money.

EVANS: Mr. Dixon, what advice do you give aspiring performers who want to carve out a successful career in hardcore porn?

DIXON: First and foremost, get serious about it! Be professional, respectful and polite in all your dealings with directors and producers. Have crisp, crystal-clear photos, making sure that all of you can be seen. Produce a video clip of yourself in action. Provide a concisely written summary of your talents: “I’m very well-endowed.” “I’m a power bottom.” “I want to do porn because…” But beware: most companies are looking for big d**k tops or versatile models who can f**k on cam. Bottoms are a dime a dozen!

EVANS: Dawg, if you have one warning, one “no-no,” what would it be?

DIXON: This: don’t think that sleeping with the studio head or staff will get you anywhere! That’s just a “bad movie” waiting to happen. (He’s unequivocal.)

EVANS: So, models shouldn’t be searching for that “casting couch,” eh?

DIXON: Exactly. There will ALWAYS be someone younger, sweeter, tighter, deeper, bigger, etc. If you’re smart and professional, you’ll be treated as such. And as a result, you’ll achieve your goals.

Next up: the role of massage/escorting/sex for pay in growing/enhancing a porn model’s brand, and how “The Biz” has shaped him.

How Model Helena Christensen Is Taking Danish Super Juice to the Next Level

helena christensen juices

Leading a healthy lifestyle has never been a fad for Helena Christensen—clean eating is embedded in the Danish native’s Nordic culture. But those spending today wandering around Copenhagen on the heels of the city’s fashion week may be surprised to learn that she has bottled her balanced approach: Five years ago, Christensen signed on as the creative director of Seimei, the company that produces Wish juices, and set to work developing a range of organic fruit–based blends with an eye on next-level purity. The result is a range of cold-pressed, sustainably made, non-GMO juices with a mission: Arriving in five flavors ranging from apple-strawberry to raspberry (Christensen’s favorite), “it’s like an drinking straight from an orchard,” she says of their authentic, uncontrived taste. And what’s not included—concentrated purees, colorants, xanthan gum, or synthetics—is as important as what is. There is no waste involved in their production (even the leftover pulp is baked into fruit chips) and ingredients like fresh black currants and gooseberries are locally sourced from farmers. With every bottle bought, a portion of the sale goes towards a charity of the customer’s choice. Think of it like the cherry, or rather, the organic cherry, on top.

Wish Juices, available at Holms Bager, Østergade 52, 1100 København, Copenhagen ; 45.33.14.40.02

From Kendall Jenner to Ashley Graham: The Best Model Swimsuit Moments of the Summer

Lily Aldridge

While most of us are freezing in an AC-ridden cubicle in a sweater, browsing Google for pipe-dream pictures of tricked-out bikinis and islands surrounded by clear bodies of saltwater, there are, in fact, real live people living out our far-off fantasies [out there.] Yes, they happen to be models but they are models in stellar swimsuits, nonetheless, basking in the joys of summer from poolside to seaside. We’re living vicariously through Victoria’s Secret models Josephine Skriver and Jasmine Tookes, who recently took Turks and Caicos by storm: Skriver strutted through the ocean in a black one-piece with diving décolletage while Tookes gave her purple bikini the sand-strewn treatment on land. As for Angel, Romee Strijd? She was homebound, yet on the water in the Netherlands, cruising the scenic lakes of Loosdrechtse Plassen by boat in a charming frilled bikini. We’ve also recently sighted Kendall Jenner post-swim in a strappy citrus bikini, Joan Smalls making a strong case for the criss-cross-kini, and Ashley Graham in a strapless pink and purple number, posing pretty in a lounge chair. Got swimsuits on the brain yet? Here, see more models putting their best shoreside looks into ray-glazed play.

Why I Model

Confession: I’m not in this for the clothes. Or the pampering, or the possibility of Instagram fame. Although all of that stuff is really fun!

2015-07-16-1437057065-3461811-Insta_ModelLife.png

As you can see form this recent Instagram post depicting my life as a Plus Size model, it’s all glamour all the way! 😛

In my first post “Confessions of a Recovering Fat Kid,” I shared a little bit about my struggle to accept myself and feel beautiful because of my size. And while I’m happy to say that I’m more comfortable in my skin than ever before, and taking better care of myself than ever before, the truth is that I have been through some very dark times. The way that I got through those times was by believing that I was feeling the terrible things that I was feeling for a reason.

This way of thinking is a salient truth that permeates most of the world’s major religions, summarized well by Danielle LaPorte:

“May my suffering be of service”–Danielle LaPorte

Most directly derived from the Buddhist faith, the idea is this: “If I’m going to go feel this pain, let it at least have some divine purpose that is greater than me. Let it be something that allows me to serve others.” So when I was dealing with some very deep emotional wounds, I got through it by putting out a prayer to the universe to show me how this suffering could somehow be of service to others.

If you had told me a year ago today that I would be signed with an agency and that companies would even consider paying me money to model their clothing, I would have laughed in your face. I never imagined that this is the form that my service would take, and yet, here I am.

2015-07-16-1437056891-5819163-IMG_0278edit.jpg

This photo is from a recent test shoot with photographer Jon Taylor, hair and make-up by super lovable Jane Meng of 25th and Jane. I’m really proud of it because it represents all of the hard work and creativity that has gone into building my book and establishing myself in the modeling world, through a process of working with amazing creative people like Jon and Jane.

For me, modeling isn’t just an occupation or a form of creative expression (although it is both of those things). Because of what I’ve experienced in my life, I am determined to share my experiences in the hopes that other women can be spared the pain that I’ve gone through. By putting myself in front of the lens and expressing myself, I believe that I’m creating images that other women will look at and say, “That’s a beautiful image. That woman has a body like mine. If she is beautiful, then maybe I am beautiful too.”

Modeling is how I serve the world. Plain and simple. If I never grace the cover of a magazine, I’ll be happy knowing that I was able to give even a few other women permission to love themselves and feel beautiful, just as they are. I believe that every woman deserves to feel beautiful, happy and loved regardless of her size.

Rachel Finninger, whose high cheekbones and olive complexion owe to a German and Native American heritage, was a breakout face this resort season: She starred in Altuzarra’s look book and walked the Calvin Klein and Gucci cruise shows in New York. Rachel Finninger: I got scouted by an agent in a shopping mall. It wasn’t the agency I ended up signing with, but it sort of sparked my interest in modeling. My mom had always told me, “You should be a model.” And I would be like, “Well, you’re my mother; you’re supposed to say that.”

Miley Cyrus Kisses Victoria’s Secret Model Stella Maxwell In Hollywood

It seems the rumors that Miley Cyrus is at least more than friends with Victoria’s Secret model Stella Maxwell could be true

On Tuesday night, the 22-year-old singer was spotted passionately kissing the 24-year-old model while taking a break from filming a music video in Hollywood.

The pair were pressed up against a trailer as they made out, seemingly unconcerned with who witnessed their public display of affection.

Rumors of their relationship started last month after they both started making appearances on each other’s social media accounts.

In a recent interview with V magazine, Maxwell joked that the pair met through Grindr, before explaining the two were introduced by Cyrus’ close friend Cheyne Thomas, and went on to say that it was friendship at first sight.

Cyrus, who recently launched a nonprofit organization to help homeless LGBTQ youth, recently opened up to Paper magazine about her sexuality

“I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn’t involve an animal and everyone is of age,” she said. “Everything that’s legal, I’m down with. Yo, I’m down with any adult — anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me. I don’t relate to being boy or girl, and I don’t have to have my partner relate to boy or girl.”

Cyrus also spoke of telling her mother she was interested in women. “I remember telling her I admire women in a different way. And she asked me what that meant. And I said, I love them. I love them like I love boys,” she said. “And it was so hard for her to understand. She didn’t want me to be judged and she didn’t want me to go to hell. But she believes in me more than she believes in any god. I just asked for her to accept me. And she has.”

Cyrus who publicly dated Patrick Schwarzenegger, Justin Gaston, Nick Jonas, and was engaged to Liam Hemsworth, previously said that not all of her relationships were “straight, heterosexual” ones.

How to Grow Out Your Bangs: Model Jessica Hart Skips the Awkward Stage

jessica hart

After snipping her face-framing waves into a blunt, brow-grazing layer of fringe earlier in the year, Jessica Hart has emerged as a testament to the transformative power of a Jane Birkin–esque chop. Spotted in New York City yesterday, the model seemed to have skipped her last trim in favor of eyelash-skimming bangs that actually benefit from a bit of slept-in wave. It’s a breezier, less structured look with a hint of girlish charm that was made for this summer of rumpled bohemian middle parts—and offers definitive proof that, done right, growing out your fringe is anything but awkward.

Model Olympia Campbell Goes Beyond Cutoffs and Wellies for Glastonbury

Olympia campbell glastonbury photo diary

Kate Moss may have set the standard “I’m with the band” festival chic when she started sporting very abridged cutoffs and wellies to Glastonbury Festival, but by now the look has become somewhat de rigueur; sure, your legs look good, but is that really the best you’ve got? Leave it to Instagram’s favorite British model Olympia Campbell to pave an actually outré festival-going look of nineties raver-redux-meets-hazy-flower-child that has us totally rethinking our approach. Think pastel crocheted high-waisted shorts with a matching cropped tank, topped off with a banana yellow Muppet vest, and accessorized with very oversize palm-tree-embellished frames. “I hate looking like I’m in uniform—and wellies are also extremely unsexy to dance in,” says Campbell of her concert-hopping ensemble. “Not that I was looking particularly sexy anyway—unless people are into the bag lady look!”

Campbell’s ensembles for the musical affair ran the gamut of retro frocks with sleeves of bell-bottom proportions patchworked in fuchsia, red, and violet, to a Pepto-pink jacket paired with a barely there top. And those off-kilter looks comparable to the garb in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat roused plenty of reactions from fellow showgoers. “There were quite a lot of people who dressed pretty wacky, but someone did say I looked like a bumblebee one day, and I got quite a few compliments on my big colorful coat with the wizard sleeves,” says Campbell. “Most of the time I think people just thought I looked like a complete madwoman.” In a sea of the same-old cutoffs? That’s definitely a good thing.

And as for where Campbell scored the goods? It was all London-sourced. “I went shopping along Portobello Road,” says Campbell. “There’s this great shop that sells lots of old Afghan clothes where I bought the embroidered cropped shirt.” And Campbell plans on wearing her garb-on-the-grounds on the street, too—though her neighbors may not be too keen on the look. “I’m not sure the yummy mummies of Notting Hill would approve if I walked around the streets wearing the same outfits,” says Campbell. “But I’m quite mad for hats, so that crushed bowler should come out pretty often.” Wearing your festival duds year-round? That’s something we’ll definitely tip our hat to.

Brad and Hudson Kroenig’s Cutest Daddy-and-Me Model Moments

Photo: Evans Caglage / Firstview.com

Celebrate Father’s Day the male model way and join us on a look back at the ultimate charming Chanel runway staples—none other than the father-and-son duo Brad and Hudson Kroenig. With their hand-in-hand stride and enviable bone structure, the daddy-and-me team manages to steal the show season after season. And over the years, the duo has proven itself to be not just dynamic, but also dapper. Maybe the tow-headed tot, who has been walking the runway since he was two, shines in full Tyrolean style while his father keeps it pared-back in a knit sweater and denim jeans during Paris-Salzburg pre-fall 2015. Or maybe both make a case for the cowboy, in military style coats and charming toppers during the Paris-Dallas Chanel pre-fall 2014 affair. And if you weren’t already one for denim-on-denim, you might change your mind after seeing their matching elevated Canadian tuxedo looks at Chanel spring 2011. But no matter what they wear, this is one case of “like father, like son”: Each strut induces a unison croon of awwws from showgoers. Here, the Kroenigs’ most precious moments together on the Chanel runway, just in time to get you in the mood for Father’s Day.

Here’s How to Borrow from the Boys Like a Model

Janice Alida Prospekt Supply

Pop quiz: What does Tyson Chandler’s closet have in common with Anna Suis go-to girl, model Janice Alida? If you guessed outerwear—specifically, Prospekt Supply’s specialty, high-tech windbreakers—you’d be right on the money. And why not? Prospekt Supply’s Andrew Joseph knows what women want to wear—and he happens to be married to one of his best customers.

“I love baggy looks on girls, that is my favorite!” says Joseph, whose union with Alida has resulted in the latter’s well-documented knack for effortlessly styling the loose-fitting piece into her everyday wardrobe. “I think some girls will try it on and will say ‘Oh it’s huge!’ But that is the point—don’t be afraid!” Joseph’s breathable, elevated windbreakers incorporate textiles like Italian-sourced lambskin elbow patches and water-resistant nylon (“The zippers are Italian and Swiss too!”), with a kangaroo pouch that the piece folds into in one easy move. (Just think: Long summer weekend packing suddenly feels oh so easy.)

Chandler has already requested a custom style, and Opening Ceremony addicts will soon have their own exclusive floral design, but it’s Alida who has brought the label into the forefront, appearing on street style blogs and Instagram feeds alike in a slicked-out black version paired with low-slung denim cutoffs or a flouncy lace skirt, or a camouflage style worn with a macramé knit top. “In the beginning, she always used to wear it with dresses,” says Joseph, but Alida is just as often found wearing her husband’s baggy pants with the loose-fitting topper. “It is a menswear piece and so you should wear it like a menswear piece. But if you want it to be more feminine, wear it with a short little skirt that pokes out of the bottom, or really tight jeans or heels. With menswear, you can run with it in any direction and style,” says Alida. Bring on the summer showers.

Make Up For Ever has released images of its newest campaign stars: model Andreja Pejić and actress and blogger Jamie Chung. Celebrity makeup artist Melanie Iglesias will also be the brand’s pro consulting artist. At a press event announcing the news, Pejić told the assembled beauty editors, “When I was little, I would dream about what it would be like to grow up and be a woman. I didn’t care if I was scrubbing toilets — if I was doing it as a woman, I’d be happy. I’m thankful to Make Up For Ever for taking this bold step.” According to WWD, Pejić is the first transgender model to front a big makeup campaign, symbolically opening the door for Caitlyn Jenner and others, too. The brand’s new GIF showing the campaign images is below.

Going Off Duty and On Film with Model Alexandra Elizabeth Ljadov

Photo: Courtesy of Alexandra Elizabeth Ljadov

For someone so well-documented—walking in a little under 70 shows just in the fall 2015 season alone!—it should come as no surprise that model Alexandra Elizabeth Ljadov likes to document things herself. And her Instagram, @AlexandraElizabethLjadov, is evidence of all of the behind-the-scenes moments, backstage mayhem, and glamorous downtime the job implies. It helps that her aesthetic—a Fujifilm-camera-captured hazy nineties-supermodel vibe—is refreshing compared to the plethora of millennial-snapped and Mayfair-filtered feeds on the service. Ljadov’s virtual trove of backstage snaps ranges from new kids on the block models and friends like Molly Bair, Valery Kaufman, and Stella Lucia embracing at Chanel resort to the sunbathing Dutch duo Maartje Verhoef and Sanne Vloet, which isn’t to mention all of the other stuff that comes from being young and having lots of time in the big city. “There are so many inspiring things around New York,” says Ljadov. “You’re, like, drinking a milk shake, and if you don’t want it anymore, it’s like, ‘Let’s take a photo of it!’”

And Ljadov isn’t exaggerating—half-slurped props have made appearances in her shots. She used one along with a Loewe bag in her own take on mini editorials around the city, which she titled “Prada x Loewe” and in which Ljadov and her roommate (fellow Estonian model Harleth Kuusik) cheekily pose with everything from a dead fish to a statue of Marge from The Simpsons. No stranger to sentimentality, Ljadov even documented her first prom experience, using only images from her Fujifilm camera.

As for what’s developing beyond instant film? Ljadov is already creating and editing videos, which include short fast-motion documentaries of Fashion Week in the vein of Jonas Åkerlund’s late-nineties work (his music video for The Prodigy comes to mind). “But now I want to do a video with a storyline,” says Ljadov. But before she makes the big step into narrative, there’s always the issue of time management. Does she have the bandwidth to pursue a pair of interests at once? First thing’s first: “I did a new video of resort, but I haven’t saved it—” says the model, “there’s not enough memory. I have to take my computer the Apple Store!” Suddenly we feel like Apple’s limits are the only ones that are going to be holding Ljadov back anytime soon.

Festival Dressing in the City Like a Model Off Duty: From Governors Ball to Lollapalooza

holding-alternatice-festival-girl-

When you’re dancing in the desert to Florence and the Machine or traipsing across farm fields in rural Tennessee, festival dressing calls for little more than bare skin and boho ease. Even fashion’s pinch-hitters do it: Just look at Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid, who exchanged their Calvin Klein Collection for basic cutoffs and bra tops at Coachella this year, to better complement Indio’s natural backdrop.

But what about the city festival girl? From Outside Lands in San Francisco to Pitchfork and Lollapalooza in Chicago, plenty of summer music events take place far away from a pastoral setting in metropolitan areas, where flower crowns and fringe can look out of place. These urban festivals call for an outfit that can take you from dancing in the park to dinner downtown, without looking like a lost Burner.

Simply put: Channel a model with big city style, whose off-duty look can transition seamlessly from a music festival to back on the street. Think Binx Walton in a Hood By Air sweatshirt and koi-print board shorts, or Tilda Lindstam in flared overalls and a crochet knit tee. Street-style savant Hanne Gaby Odiele is perennially festival-ready, from her graphic men’s bowling shirt and boyfriend jeans to a black slip dress and creeper boots.

The look of these girls is far from basic—cropped flares or denim culottes, instead of cutoffs; a bandeau and vest, in place of a bra top—but without ever trying too hard. Last year, Imaan Hammam took Brooklyn’s Afropunk Festival in high-waisted vintage denim and a nineties-style spaghetti-strap tank cropped at the waist, a simple ensemble that struck all the right chords, and what’s more, it’s an easy look to re-create.

Here, five street-smart models and how to get their urban festival style, just in time for this weekend’s Governors Ball and the rest of the summer concert season.

Ad with ‘unhealthily’ thin model banned

An Elle magazine advert for fashion brand Yves Saint Laurent featuring a model with ‘prominent’ ribcage has been banned by the British advertising watchdog.

YSL Ad Banned Over Model Appearing ‘Unhealthily Underweight’

An Yves Saint Laurent advertisement was banned by UK authorities after they determined the fashion brand’s ad irresponsibly featured a model who appeared dangerously thin.

The ad shows model Kiki Willems, 18, sprawled on the floor with her chest exposed and legs shadowed in a way that accentuates her already slender figure. After a consumer who spotted the ad in Elle UK magazine complained to the Advertising Standards Authority, the ASA concluded Wednesday that the ad may not appear again in its current form, and detailed its concern with the model’s appearance.

ysl

“The ASA considered that the model’s pose and the particular lighting effect in the ad drew particular focus to the model’s chest, where her rib cage was visible and appeared prominent, and to her legs, where her thighs and knees appeared a similar width, and which looked very thin, particularly in light of her positioning and the contrast between the narrowness of her legs and her platform shoes,” the ASA wrote in its ruling. “We therefore considered that the model appeared unhealthily underweight in the image and concluded that the ad was irresponsible.”

YSL did not immediately return The Huffington Post’s request for comment, but indicated to the ASA that it did not agree with the complainant’s view.

The Be Real Campaign, a UK organization dedicated to body confidence, condemned YSL for promoting unrealistic beauty standards.

“This is a prime example of advertisers selecting models based on the outdated premise that the only way to sell products is by presenting an idealised view of the female body,” campaign head Samantha Arditti wrote in a press release Wednesday. “We need media, advertisers and publishers to use images that show a diverse range of models to reflect what we really look like so we can feel more confident about who we are, which in turn will not only lead to a healthier attitude to our bodies but a society that values health above appearance.”

Model Edie Campbell Does Not Miss Her Long Hair—and Other Beauty Confessions from Fashion’s Favorite Risk Taker

edie campbell

As fashion’s reigning chameleon of choice, model Edie Campbell has mastered the art of the fearless transformation: In recent years, she’s morphed from a Françoise Hardy–esque dolly bird with pillowy bangs for Hedi Slimanes spring 2013 Saint Laurent campaign into the punkish Joan Jett–inspired muse behind Marc Jacobss fall 2014 runway look and, more recently, an English-rose-with-an-edge courtesy of a strawberry blonde shag.

In New York City on a recent Thursday evening, the art school grad and designer favorite was sporting her latest coiffing experiment: a texturized, honeyed crop curated by editorial whiz Guido Palau. “I’m in a fortunate position where I don’t have a job that requires me to go into a board meeting and be taken seriously. I can be ridiculous,” she laughs, explaining her up-for-anything approach to beauty—which, most recently, has seen her assume the role of moody “rock chic” muse in YSL’s new Black Opium perfume campaign.  In the atmospheric ad, Campbell offers up a black leather- and smudged eyeliner–fueled spin on the classic Opium imagery that debuted in 1977.

Edie is plenty serious about some things, though, including horseback riding (“that’s what I’d do all the time if I could”); writing (see this spring’s highly entertaining Coachella travel diary for Vogue.com; and pursuing her curiosity for the arts. On a private tour of “China: Through The Looking Glass” at the Met last month, Campbell took special notice of sketches Yves Saint Laurent had done for the launch of his original Opium eau de parfum almost 40 years ago. It helped connect more than a few dots for the 24-year-old, for whom scent is inextricably tied to memory. “That’s the incredible thing about fragrance,” she explains—“that sensual emotive part that lets you move through a space and leave a little trail behind you. It’s what people perceive of you, but don’t necessarily register.” Here, Campbell waxes equally poetic about her unexpected eyeliner trick, why she doesn’t miss her long hair, and how to successfully wear a sheet mask while enjoying an in-flight cocktail.

I’m sure you get asked this all the time, but what is your approach to your ever-evolving beauty look?
“Fashion is meant to be fun. That is the point; to express something. And sometimes, a wig’s just not good enough! Also, when there’s someone like Guido [Palau], or Steven Meisel or Grace Coddington asking you to cut your hair, why would you say no? These supercreative, wonderfully talented people obviously know better than you!”

Do you ever miss your long hair?
“Not at all. When you have long hair, you’re always collecting it—on your clothes, in the shower. My hair never gets caught in my bag strap now, and I don’t own a hair brush. Plus, I love getting my hair cut or colored. It’s my favorite thing to just sit in a salon in midday with other ladies who lunch and watch a whole season of Game of Thrones. It’s great. I’m also working on American Horror Story.

Are there any products you’ve found that help offset all the styling on set and backstage?
Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer is a dream. It’s so thick and goopy and I slather it all over my head and sleep in it once every few months. It’s great if you’re hair is bleached.”

What is your first fragrance memory?
“The first time I became aware of fragrance I was about thirteen and all of the sophisticated girls at school were like, ‘this is my signature scent.’ That’s when I first realized that there was this potent thing that allowed you to be like, ‘this is me; this my aura; this is the cloud I operate in.’ ”

How do you wear your fragrance now?
Typically only at night because on my days off it’s not really necessary as I’m usually only wearing SPF. I’m a real burner. I have to use SPF 100—especially when I ride. I don’t really wear a vast amount of makeup either because so much of my life is spent having makeup put on me so a lot of times, I just like simple things, like curling my eyelashes, a bit of brow gel, and some Touche Éclat. I also really like Charlotte Tilbury’s eye shadows. She has a lot of brown-y,  aubergine-y colors, which are really good for me because I usually put makeup on in a slapdash kind of way so I can scrape on a little here and there, put on a bit of black mascara, and I’m done.”

What is the best beauty tip you’ve ever received?
“There’s this one French makeup artist who always says, ‘Well darling, if you don’t have any makeup, you just take your lighter and your champagne cork and you light the champagne cork and rub [the blackish residue] all over your eyes like eyeliner. Then, you put Vaseline over it.’ It’s a great beauty tip—and a great lifestyle tip!”

Do you relate to the rock chic archetype that’s often associate with you?
“Yes, because . . . I’m British. It’s an island and counter culture has been so important in creating this mentality of an underdog coming up and becoming part of the mainstream, so the idea of being as freaky and as weird as possible is really celebrated. There’s definitely a costuming and a drama to Britishness. What I don’t like about the whole ‘rock-’n’-roll’ thing is that it can be sort of excluding sometimes. Cool is not just fear dressed up in black. [The photographer] Cass Bird just Instagrammed that. It’s such a good line! But yes, in a general sense, if you asked me who the people are that I look up to, a lot of them would be wearing leather.”

And with that: Any summer travel plans or beauty advice?
“I’m going to Norway with my mother and sister to eat salmon and march across the glaciers, and then I also need to go somewhere hot because if I stay in England, I’m not getting any sun. If I’m flying, though, I will be bringing water, lip balm, [Elizabeth Arden] Eight Hour Cream Hand Treatment, and I quite like to wear a sheet mask on the plane. I put one on and order Bloody Marys. I look like a monster!”

Model Janice Dickinson Sues Bill Cosby For Defamation Over Rape Claims

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Model Janice Dickinson sued Bill Cosby for defamation on Wednesday over denials made by the comedian’s representatives after she accused him last year of raping her in 1982.

Dickinson’s lawsuit seeks unspecified damages on defamation, false light and intentional infliction of emotional distress claims. The suit states Dickinson has been re-victimized and her reputation has suffered because of pointed denials by Cosby’s attorney that the comedian drugged and raped her in a Lake Tahoe, California, hotel room more than 30 years ago. The allegations were first made in an interview with “Entertainment Tonight” after numerous other women accused Cosby of drugging them and inappropriate sexual conduct dating back several decades.

The lawsuit states Dickinson, 60, sought a retraction of the denials from Cosby, but the request was denied.

An email sent to Cosby’s attorney Martin Singer was not immediately returned. Singer called Dickinson’s rape allegations “false and outlandish” in a letter to The Associated Press last year.

The lawsuit details Dickinson’s allegations that Cosby raped her after giving her wine and a pill in the hotel room, and how she wanted to go public with her story in a 2002 autobiography but was prevented from doing so by the book’s publisher.

She did not report the incident to police in the early 1980s out of fear of retaliation by Cosby, her lawsuit states. The statute of limitations to criminally prosecute the actor-comedian has long since passed, as has the statute on civil claims directly related to the incident.

“This is Janice Dickinson’s chance for justice,” her attorney Lisa Bloom said Wednesday.

Three women who have accused Cosby of abuse have sued him for defamation in a Massachusetts federal court.

One of the women, Therese Serignese, said after a court hearing earlier this month that she wanted her reputation restored after Cosby’s camp branded her a liar.

Dickinson’s lawsuit is seeking a similar outcome.

“Cosby knows that he drugged and raped Ms. Dickinson,” the lawsuit states. “He knew that calling her rape disclosure a lie was a false statement.”

Aspiring Teen Model Challenges Society’s Stereotypes Of Down Syndrome: ‘Exposure Will Create Acceptance’

Madeline Stuart is an 18-year-old aspiring model, and she’s here to challenge society’s rigid definition of what “beautiful” is.

Thank you for your support, please share my page and invite your friends to like it. I love you all xx

Posted by Madeline getting Downs to modelling on Friday, May 8, 2015

Madeline, who lives in Brisbane, Australia, has Down syndrome. She writes on her Facebook page that she believes “modeling will help change [society’s] view of people with Down syndrome.”

“Exposure will help to create acceptance,” she says.

According to WPVI-TV, Madeline struggled with her weight as a youngster. Thanks to healthy eating and exercise, the teen lost 45 pounds. Madeline now dances, swims and does gymnastics and cheerleading.

Madeline’s mom, Rosanne Stuart, said she hopes her daughter will inspire other individuals with Down syndrome to make similarly positive lifestyle choices. Studies have suggested that children with Down syndrome are more prone to be overweight.

“People with Down syndrome can do anything,” Stuart told Buzzfeed. “They just do it at their own pace. Give them a chance and you will be rewarded beyond your greatest expectations.”

“I think it is time people realized that people with Down syndrome can be sexy and beautiful and should be celebrated,” she added.

Earlier this year, actress Jamie Brewer became the first person with Down syndrome to ever walk the runway at New York Fashion Week.

According to Buzzfeed, Madeline — who is already landing modeling gigs — is currently looking for an agent.

In the meantime, the teen is winning the Interwebs. She has more than 150,000 Facebook fans so far.

“I am so happy and blessed,” Madeline wrote on Facebook Monday as her story went viral. “So happy that everyone is sharing the love,” she said in a later post.

The “Systems” Business Model

A typical start-up created by an inexperienced entrepreneur has about a 10% chance of success.

But if that same entrepreneur pivots, or starts a second company, the odds of the next venture succeeding jumps to about 20%. And that makes sense because you learn a lot during your first failure, and you make a lot of contacts that can be useful later.

If you go up the odds chain, an angel investor with twenty investments in different companies might have a 70% chance of doing well because of the value of diversification.

A start-up incubator does a similar thing by holding equity in a diverse portfolio of start-ups. If only one out of ten succeeds, that can be enough to make the incubator profitable.

You get even better odds investing in established companies that are part of an index fund, so long as you hold for a long time. Let’s say the odds of that working out for you are closer to 90%. Diversification always seems to be a good idea.

So I asked myself how a start-up could get some of the benefits of diversification while still keeping the advantages of being a start-up with a single focus. The answer, I hope, is a Systems Business Model.

I wrote the book (literally) on why systems are better than goals in most complex environments. Most start-ups are goal-focused. They might have one product (plus a few features) and too much optimism about market demand. That’s how you get to a 10% odds of success, or 20% if you are experienced at this sort of thing. A Systems Business Model attempts to improve those odds.

The start-up I co-founded (CalendarTree.com) might be the first example of a systems approach to a start-up. When we relaunch this summer you will see a portfolio of software solutions around the domain of scheduling, calendars, and time. We are able to quickly create solutions in this area because we developed a deep understanding of the market and the relevant technology while creating our original scheduling product. Once we had the knowledge and the technology platform in place we could add a dozen related but independent products to the upcoming relaunch. We’ll change our name to better fit the new offerings.

We have no idea which ones of the new products will capture people’s attention. When we relaunch we will solve about fifty common problems (I counted them) in the schedule and calendar field. (Note: We do not compete with calendars. Our job is to make your existing calendar more useful, among other things.)

If you ask me how we plan to make money, I’ll tell you I have no idea. But if any one of our products is a runaway hit, we will organize around it. If people like them as a package, we can work with that too. Maybe someday we will add some premium features. Maybe someday the app upgrade will cost one dollar. Maybe someday there will be an advertising component. We can go in any of those directions. We designed those doors to stay open.

Clearly this is not the kind of story you want to tell your potential angel investors. Those cats want to know the names of your first customers, see letters of intent, or know that you are already experiencing organic growth. No investor wants to hear “whatever” as part of your plan to monetize.

But “whatever” is exactly what makes a diversified portfolio of stocks a good investment. The whole point of “whatever” is that humans are shitty predictors of anything. But numbers are numbers. Diversification always seems to improve odds.

A Systems Business Model is designed to improve your odds of success even as you are failing on individual tasks and projects. Each failure increases our insight into what works and what does not in our chosen field. And you decide in advance that you will be taking a deep dive to find value. You won’t find many diamonds on the surface. Each failure makes us technically smarter and more insightful. And soon we will have diversification on our side. If you don’t feel a compelling need for nine of our solutions, you might get jazzed about the tenth.

This model obviously has big challenges for branding. But we figured out a way to make it work for us in this case. I’ll tell you more over the summer.

And obviously funding is a problem with the “whatever” story. But we’ll be fine long enough to know what we have. Maybe if the Systems Business Model works for us, investors will take notice.

Is this sort of blog post interesting? I really can’t tell.

Why Miley Cyrus Is This Woman’s Non-Straight, Non-Binary Role Model

By Kelsey Marshall for YourTango.com

If you haven’t heard, Miley has been up to a lot more than sticking her tongue out and hanging out in her underwear.

In the course of two short days, Miley has kicked-off her foundation for homeless LGBT youth, the Happy Hippie Foundation, and given an interview to Out magazine where she discussed not identifying with any particular gender. She also cavalierly stated she’s had sexual relationships with women.

Miley isn’t playing around anymore. And I’m very happy about it.

 I’m downright enthusiastic.

In the wake of the complete Bruce Jenner tabloid debacle and subsequent (incredibly powerful and inspiring) interview, gender identity has been forced into the forefront of the public debate.

This is no less than amazing. This is something we should ALL be talking about.

Now more than ever, black and white are your two options for any kind of opinion. You either love the Kardashians or you hate them. The dress is either black and blue or it’s white and gold. Everyone should have guns or no one should.

Comment culture has made us into a strongly-opinionated fleet that leaves no room for middle ground. The Internet has taken something extremely valuable away from us: it’s taken away our gray area.

I don’t mean for this to be taken out of context. I am not referring to a gray area between right and wrong, between yes and no. I’m not referring to a gray area where I say one thing and mean another.

I’m talking about a gray area of identity and ownership.

What Miley is doing is perfectly demonstrating how to mean what you say and expect no less than to be taken seriously for it.

When she says she doesn’t identify as a girl or a boy, that in fact she would rather identify as nothing, then that’s exactly what she is. Even calling her “gender-queer” is a bit of a stretch, since she’s not using that word to describe herself.

It’s a complicated thing for a celebrity to identify themselves. No doubt Miley’s words will be taken out of context, flipped, stretched and contorted beyond recognition.

But she doesn’t care — and that’s a very valuable lesson.

Young people, especially young women, grow up with so much uncertainty. We’re told who to listen to, who to admire, what behavior is “slutty” and what behavior will grant us access to a life deemed acceptable.

There’s not a lot of room for understanding your own body, your own intentions, desires and goals.

You’re identified at birth with a gender that carries an incredible amount of social weight. And for some, that weight is so heavy that suicide is the only answer.

When you’re faced with so many decisions that already seem made for you, right down to your gender identity, speaking your own truth is an incredibly terrifying task.

When Bruce Jenner spoke out about his transition to becoming a woman, he was called attention-seeking. Yet, he did it anyway and adamantly. No one should have to be concerned with the outcome of their truthful words or how others might hear them.

The part that matters is the truth.

I can understand Miley’s struggle with gender. I’m a lesbian, and gender and identity is something I struggle with every day. To hear a young woman who faces so much criticism in her everyday life state, “I don’t relate to what people would say defines a girl or a boy, and I think that’s what I had to understand: Being a girl isn’t what I hate; it’s the box that I get put into” is incredibly powerful to me.

In fact, it’s freeing.

It isn’t just young people she’s standing up for. It’s every single person that’s ever felt stifled by an identity they were assigned at birth or even an identity they gave themselves. It’s standing up for me and the times when I want to agree that I find a man sexually attractive and don’t say it, in fear that I’ll misrepresent my own identity.

Miley isn’t representing or misrepresenting any identity. She’s just being herself.

Whatever label you put on yourself or the world puts on you, it doesn’t mean half as much as the what you feel inside and your pride to express every worthy thought you have.

Because we’re all worthy of that — celebrity or not. We’re worthy enough to be proud of what makes us unique and what makes us not quite fit into a box. We’re worthy enough to find our own identity and be okay with the parts of ourselves that still might not fit tidily under that umbrella.

What we really need to learn is this: labels and identities aren’t one-size-fits-all. Neither are people.

You’re never going to be just one thing — and that’s f*cking awesome.

What It Was REALLY Like Working As an Abercrombie ‘Model’

I just read in the Wall Street Journal that the Abercrombie Company said it would stop hiring sales staff on “body type or physical attractiveness” and will relax its infamous “look policy.” “Brand Representative” will replace “Model” as the title for sales staff as well. According to the article, overall, the company’s marketing — which was heavily sexualized — is going be to be toned down.

As a former “model” on the sales staff, what do I have to say about this?

It’s about damn time.

When I was in college, babysitting wasn’t cutting it during the winter months and I needed another job. I was in the mall one day when an overly-bubbly blonde girl wearing an Abercrombie and Fitch distressed denim skirt with branded flip flops and no stockings (it was December in New Jersey, mind you) approached me.

“Would you be interested in working here?” she asked me, clipboard in hand.

“I am looking for a part-time job, actually.”

“Well, we are having a group interview on Saturday at 4. You should totally come! Wear Abercrombie. It helps.” She explained.

“Um… OK. Sure.” I agreed.

Working in retail never appealed to me, but I needed the extra money.

With that, she crossed off something on her clipboard and pranced off.

I returned on Saturday to find myself sitting in the store’s lounge area with a group of people, men and women, around my age. We all looked alike. We could have been related. White. Thin. Straight teeth. No acne. The other thing that separated me from the other girls was that their hair was pin straight, and mine with thick and very curly.

The manager introduced herself to us and got right into what was expected of us going forward. There was no interview process. She didn’t know anything about me. She didn’t know that I hated retail, that I wasn’t the best “people person” and that I didn’t always dress head to toe in their brand. She didn’t know my availability, which would be limited because I was taking 21 college credits that semester, or that I would have to quit in five months when summer arrived because I babysat for a family full-time. She didn’t know if I had drug problem (I don’t). All she knew about me, and the others, was our outward appearances.

We were each handed a pamphlet, the cover adorned with a shirtless man. She went over the fact that we weren’t called “representatives” or “sales associates,” we were to be called “models.” She discussed how our hair couldn’t be heavily styled or dyed an “unnatural” color. She talked to the girls and explained we could not ever don fake nails (or painted nails in general), heavy eyeliner or colored lipstick. We couldn’t wear black… ever, because the company did not make any clothing in black. Flip-flops could be worn year-round, but she rambled off a long list of shoes we couldn’t wear when working. Uggs were permitted. I hated Uggs, so I’d be wearing flip-flops even if it was snowing outside.

We would be privy to a 30% discount. The lights were to be kept low, the music high. Every 15 minutes, someone was to go around the store and spray the clothes with a designated cologne. She then went over how every so often, we will need to “recruit” a certain type of person to work with us — just like how we were recruited. She gave us the checklist of who we would have to troll the mall for, and it was ridiculous. If smartphones existed back then, it would have been online in an instant. It was a checklist that basically was their laundry list of all things that they believed made someone “attractive.” At the bottom was a different list for “minorities,” which according to that manager, they “needed” every once in a while to avoid a lawsuit.

As we were leaving, another group of kids my age were heading into the lounge area. The manager nonchalantly mentioned that these were people who did not meet the criteria to be “allowed” on the floor to interact with customers, but they would be good working in the “back,” which I would later find out was the stock room.

I was young and I needed the money. I remember going home that day and telling my mother that I believed I was hired just based on preconceived notions of what they believed was attractive. I didn’t feel flattered. Actually, I felt even more self-conscious.

I worked on and off for the Abercrombie Company for two years, so call me a hypocrite, but I was a full-time college student and they worked around my schedule. I can go on for days about the horrors I experienced there. How one day I forgot to remove my nail polish from the weekend and had to go home and take it off. How we had mandated “overnights” where I would have to work from close of the store until 8 in the morning the next day for certain inventory projects. How shirtless male models would stand outside the store urging young teenage girls to come in and buy something. How a lot of what mattered was literally only skin-deep.

The fact Abercombie is just “getting with the times” more than seven years since I have worked there, even stepped foot into that place, is crazy to me. During my time there I was constantly hearing about lawsuits over discriminatory hiring practices.

Abercrombie never celebrated diversity, be it race, religion or pants size. In real life, every single person is different. Even identical twins have differentiating fingerprints. We didn’t hatch from eggs or pods. To think that Abercrombie “got away” with celebrating everyone being “the same” in a very diverse world for this long is astounding.

For Abercrombie, it’s sink or swim at this point. Adapt or die. Now, a major thing the company has to worry about is if too much damage to their image has been done to ever bounce back from their bigotry and boost sales.

Unlike when Abercrombie was at the height of its popularity, the world has finally begun to see the immense “beautiful” in the “different.” Thus, the less appealing brands like Abercrombie are becoming. Being different is celebrated far more now than it was back even when I was younger.

Cookie cutter clones aren’t the prime examples of “pretty” anymore, and for crying out loud, they never should have been from the start.

Meet Gunilla Lindblad, the Swedish Model Who Defined the Haute Hippie Look in ’70s Vogue

Gunilla Lindblad

It’s safe to say that Gunilla Lindblad, a flaxen-haired Swedish model who arrived in Paris in 1968, never imagined that she would be cast as the ultimate haute hippie in Vogue. Yet in the early seventies, Gunilla, posing for her husband photographer Jean Pierre Zachariasen in free-spirited fashions, created incredible images that captured the spirit of the times and showed how the grass-roots boho style could be achieved by women who liked the look but didn’t necessarily want the lifestyle. (There were only so many Rolling Stones to go around, after all.)

With festival season just getting warm, and the seventies back in fashion, bohomania shows no signs of slowing down. And while Kate Moss and Florence Welch might be the current standard-bearers of the look, its roots stretch way back to the late sixties and early seventies; and as far as the Vogue archives go, that road almost always leads back to Gunilla. So we reached out to this four-time cover girl, and asked her to share her story.

On Meeting Mrs. Vreeland
As Lindblad remembers it, Diana Vreeland was seated at her desk in in the Graybar Building when Sarah Slavin ushered her into the editor’s red-walled office. The raven-haired Vreeland, recalls Lindblad (then newly arrived in New York from Paris), “stood up, and she came towards me, and she took me in her arms, and she said: ‘I could eat you!’ I said: ‘Oh, thank you very much.’ I didn’t know what to say.”

Three days later, Gunilla and her husband, J. P. Zachariasen—who had initially resisted showing his portfolio to Vreeland—were booked for 20 pages in the magazine. It was the kick-off of a two-year journey that would result in images that defined the haute hippie look.

Coup de Foudre
Lindblad and Zachariasen’s story began two years earlier, in April 1968 in the South of France. The Swede from Malmö first laid eyes on the Parisian journalist, on hand to help drive and model as a favor to a friend, in the airport in Marseille, after which they never parted.

The Vogue Years
Their first Vogue story, on fake furs—worn shaggy and with scarf-wrapped heads—was shot in Central Park (call time 5:00 a.m.) and was followed by a trip to OMS Ontario Motor Speedway in California where Gunilla posed with the rugged actor Pete Duel, race-car driver John Guedel, and, as Lindblad remembers it, a rather recalcitrant Michael Douglas. And then it was on to Fiji in a 707 that was empty from Hawaii to the newly independent country.

“The editor was Babs Simpson and me, no hairdresser, no makeup person, no assistant,” Gunilla says. “It was the three of us. So Diana Vreeland told me, she said: ‘Gunilla, I want you to do your own makeup every day. It has to match the dresses, so if you wear purple you have to put purple makeup. I want you to wash your hair every day so it’s totally clean.’” (This was haute hippie fashion, after all—no sweaty, slept-in locks allowed.) Simpson, an avid bird-watcher, left much of the styling to the smiling Gunilla who modeled “sixteen pages of marvelous and unexorbitant clothes for suntime.” Many of these were in dramatic cotton prints, cut to keep the midriff bare, and accessorized with head scarfs, fringed belts, gladiator sandals, and broad-rimmed hats—bohemian staples then and now.

On Working with Helmut Newton
The Zachariasens’ photographic partnership in Vogue was brief, if memorable, but their love affair with each other, and with fashion, didn’t end there. A year after the Fiji shoot, Gunilla (a four-time Vogue cover girl) was shot by Helmut Newton, in a very different guise. (“Gunilla was one of Helmut’s favorite models—he had this thing about tall blondes,” one-time Vogue editor Mary Russell has said.) Fashion was changing, and Gunilla was cast as a polished bourgeoise (a bit like Catherine Deneuve in Belle de Jour: proper icy exterior, but with strong sexual undercurrents). “He was so innovative,” Gunilla says of Newton. “[At the time] everything had to be so styled, [but] he liked to shoot the electric outlet in the background, for example. At the same time he wanted the girls to have perfect red nails—always we had to have red nails—and the hair. For a long time he wanted me to curl it and to have very full volume. They built it up in the back with stiff paper.”

On Opening Paris’s First Concept Boutique
In the mid-seventies, Zachariasen, who by this point had put down his camera, in partnership with Gunilla, his brother Olivier, and a stylist named Catherine Barade, opened a bazaar in Les Halles, “the stomach of Paris,” Zachariasen says. They called it Upla, removing just one P from the existing storefront, originally home to the Union of Milk and Poultry Products (Union des produits laitiers et Avicoles). “The idea was a little bit like an old-fashioned general store in the western part of the United States,” says Zachariasen, who had the idea of importing American workwear to Paris after becoming “fascinated with the way the construction workers were dressed,” in New York.

“It’s a little bit like what Colette is today,” Gunilla explains. The first to carry Kiehl’s, they also sold products from Santa Maria Novella, Belgian shoes, bikes from Holland, furniture, and designs by designers including two then-unknowns, Claude Montana and Azzedine Alaïa. They made a smash with their own label bags, hunting style but done in bright hues, and Smith’s painter’s pants (a so-called “anti-jean”), which they ordered in colors and imported from jobbers Zachariasen tracked down in Freeport, Long Island. “They thought I was totally crazy,” the Parisian says, but then Caroline of Monaco bought the jeans and they became very fashionable indeed. “It was the seventies,” Zachariasen says by way of explanation and “it was pretty spontaneous.”

On Real Seventies Style
Spontaneous, also, were the shows Kenzo Takada put on. The Paris-based Japanese designer was, Gunilla says, “one of the hottest designers at the time, for models. Everybody was dressed in Kenzo because he was really the one who started all the catwalks. Before, all the fashion designers’ [shows] were very structured—you were wearing a number . . . The pret-a-porter had not really started. It was really Kenzo who was leading the way—and Yves Saint Laurent also (I remember buying a lot of pants at Saint Laurent)—but Kenzo was the young one. What he did, he booked all the top models, who were photographed in the magazines, so it was fabulous doing his shows, and very often he gave you clothes or you were paid in clothes; it was a lot of fun. The show was always like two hours late, always on a Monday evening at seven o’clock. Nobody had eaten and they would give us cheap champagne . . . once I dropped a skirt and I didn’t even know! (It was in silk, he had all these layers of silk skirts, one on top of the other.) Karl Lagerfeld was there, watching. Saint Laurent was there. It was the show to see.”

After Joan Didion, Joni Mitchell, and Neil Young, Quincy Jones Is the Latest Style Icon Turned Model

Quincy Jones for Buscemi

When the image of 80-year-old literary icon Joan Didion in Céline’s spring campaign first started circulating online, the outpouring of love and admiration from all corners of the Internet was unparalleled. And then just days later, Saint Laurent creative director Hedi Slimane unveiled the latest poster child for his brand of louche, rock ’n’ roll luxury—none other than Joni Mitchell. Needless to say the fashion blogopshere was atwitter once again.

Now it seems that some seriously stylish gents are trying their hand at modeling, too. Music legend Neil Young was cast in Supreme’s spring campaign dressed in the label’s simple box logo tee, flannel shirt, and hat, and today billboards of music impresario Quincy Jones, the new face of Buscemi—a sneaker line designed by Jon Buscemi, cousin of actor Steve—popped up on the Sunset Strip in L.A. Dressed in a suit, flanked by his signature piano and headphones, the iconic music producer balances Old World sensibilities with signature flair. But it’s not the mogul’s first turn in front of a fashion photographer—back in 2006, he appeared alongside Molly Sims in ads for Jimmy Choo. Given the current trend for older, wiser models, who’s to say what leagues of distinguished gentlemen the new season will bring? Here’s hoping that Sean Connery trades in his kilts for Prada fall 2015, or that Anthony Hopkins swaps out his Savile Row suits for Loewe.

This Business Model Cuts Profits To Give Poor Communities Access To Healthy Food

One nonprofit is using its expertise on bringing better foods into underserved areas to help other groups hoping to do the same.

D.C. Central Kitchen (DCCK) — an organization fighting hunger — produced a manual for other nonprofits to utilize based off of its successful Healthy Corners program. The manual — made available for free in February, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy — provides crucial information on how the program got off the ground, why it was successful and what tactics didn’t work along the way.

The Healthy Corners program partners with dozens of local businesses to provide fresh produce and nutritional snacks to corner stores in the capital’s food deserts — low-income neighborhoods that lack grocery stores or markets.

Through the program, DCCK sells produce to local stores at wholesale prices without trying to make a profit — something other food distributors don’t do — which helps the businesses sell the food at affordable, below-market rates.

According to the nonprofit’s website, Healthy Corners sold nearly 141,368 units of produce and snacks at participating locations in the last year.

A lot can happen in a year. Our Healthy Corners program went from partnering with 29 to 68 corner store locations,…

Posted by DC Central Kitchen on Monday, December 29, 2014

“We don’t have all the answers,” Michael F. Curtin, Jr., CEO of the nonprofit, wrote in the manual. “We do have a few though, and we’ve asked lots of questions over the past four years.”

He noted that, despite what some may believe, poor community members will buy healthy foods if they have access to them.

Often, available options in food deserts consist of fast food restaurants and convenience stores offering limited choices when it comes to affordable fruits and vegetables, according to the Department of Agriculture. The department — which deems an area a food desert if it meets specific criteria concerning poverty and access to supermarkets — reports there are about 23.5 million Americans living in such communities.

Although DCCK has celebrated progress with its Healthy Corners program, research suggests advocates need to do more than simply place healthier options in food deserts, such as provide nutrition education to community members, NPR reported. That’s why DCCK offers services like cooking demonstrations and marketing support to stores — so residents understand the benefits of eating healthier and can learn how to incorporate doing so into their lives.

Oakland, California-based Food Shift is one of four groups that have taken advantage of the manual thus far, Erica Teti-Zilinskas of DCCK told the Chronicle of Philanthropy. Food Shift is partnering with other groups to create a similar program bringing healthy foods to local stores, and plans on benefitting from the DCCK manual in making its own initiative successful.

“It’s really helpful to have a model that has already done this and is working,” Food Shift Director Dana Frasz told the outlet.

Rain Dove, Androgynous Model, Is Breaking Barriers In Fashion

Rain Dove is an androgynous model making waves in the fashion world with her captivating gender non-conforming look.

Having turned heads during New York’s Fashion week, Dove is slated to participate in the Queer Fashion Week taking place in Oakland, California, April 16-19. Dove is just one of many models who are changing the face of fashion today as people come to understand the many shades and hues of human identity as it intersects with the world of fashion.

The Huffington Post chatted with Dove this week about her thoughts surrounding visibility, her experiences in the fashion world and what she sees as the future of fashion.

rain dove2

The Huffington Post: What does it mean to you to be a visible, androgynous model?
Rain Dove: Well, to be seen by and visible to any person for any reason is an honor. To be recognized by others in my field of fashion and film is I’m sure just as rewarding and humbling as it is for any successful carpenter, doctor, lawyer, chef, vet, driver, or biologist. To be a “visible androgynous model,” well it means something is being done right and that I have the opportunity to make a sizable dent in how the world sees fashion. There will never be another Rain Dove. There will never be another YOU. And I’m grateful to be able to share my journey with the world.

What have your experiences been like in the fashion world?
Challenging, adventurous and rewarding. There’s the challenge of learning to keep your self-worth and ego in check. Not everyone will see your beauty and not everyone will find you attractive or believe you are worthy of their clothing or publications. You have to be satiated with just being authentically yourself at the end of the day. Every time I put on a new garment, do a new shoot theme, or don new makeup, I am exploring another person’s vision of how they see me. This has allowed me to define and enjoy/face sides of myself I wouldn’t normally. It’s made for some really interesting stylistic discoveries such as the fact that I enjoy the temporary feel of high heels, the pressing of corsets, briefs over boxers. Most importantly the fashion world has led to the knowledge that since every image is of me, it represents me and, therefore, everything I do is perfect stylistically and nothing could be wrong because there is no wrong way to be me as long as I’m choosing to be it. Knowing that nothing was wrong with wanting to wear what I wanted because I wanted to wear it, that was the rewarding part because that’s the part I get to share with the world. Hopefully they will understand it for themselves and discover that satisfying truth in their own ways.

rain dove3

How do you think fashion is changing in terms of queer representation?
I think fashion is always changing and I think advertising is the real issue. I feel that there are several types of fashion, but two main branches. High fashion. Commercial fashion. The real conflict of representation of sexuality lies in commercial fashion. Commercial fashion means including stores and brands such as Gap, Aeropostale, H&M, DKNY, Forever21. Commercial fashion, in America at least, is the most common and prominent. Therefore their advertising is also the most prominent. Advertisements tell us all kinds of things we can expect out of the clothing as our environment when we don the garments or accessories. It tells us what type of person it would look best on — what age, race, sex — it tells us where to wear it outdoors, at a fancy cocktail party, in a relaxed home environment. And, most importantly, it tells us who we can attract wearing the garments by showcasing couples. The real lack of queer representation is the showcasing of same-sex and generally queer couples in advertisements. The reason commercial brands are slowly shifting is because sociopolitical movements are making it easier for them to do so. See. at the end of the day it isn’t the fashion world’s job to change social policies and representations of individuals or groups of people. The fashion world is made up of private entities — designers, photographers, distributors. A private entity does not have to start having queer advertising simply because we are upset. At the end of the day, a private entity needs to be able to remain in business, it needs to pay its staff, pay its rent and be able to expand. I think the fashion world and all of its private entities will change in whichever direction money lies most profitably for them. If the queer community bands together and can loudly state and prove that they have the spending power to make businesses not only richer, but also to compensate for any potential cliental loss for representing the the queer community — then I think you will see growth and change.

rain dove3

What do you see as the future of fashion in terms of the way that it intersects with the queer community?
I see that one day we will have more pressing matters globally than who people sleep with, what sex they are and are they fitting within social norms for their age/race/genitalia/socioeconomic status. Photos with queer couples, or sex ambiguous personages, will be the least of people’s worries. One day, in the world, we wont even identify ourselves as anything other than human. Queer, straight, agender, noncomforming — all the labels will be seen as superfluous information. The queer subject wont even be a topic of discussion. It will be so integrated it will becoming boring and moot. And that’s when we can all live happily ever after to orgasm and dress how we want… getting on with our lives and fixing other larger heavier issues with mankind.

‘Price Is Right’ Model Accidentally Gives Away A Car In Huge Fail

Well, that’s one way to win a car.

On Thursday’s episode of “The Price is Right,” one contestant was trying her best to guess the price tag on a new car. It turns out she didn’t have to try that hard: After one incorrect guess, model Manuela Arbeláez accidentally revealed the real price as well.

“Congratulations! Manuela just gave you a car!” said host Drew Carey.

The look on Arbeláez’s face says it all. Unfortunately, going behind the price tags won’t hide her from the Internet. But, hey, at least she didn’t fall on a treadmill or something. That would be really bad.

Who’s That Girl? Meet Fernanda Hin Lin Ly, the Pink-Haired Model Who Stole the Louis Vuitton Show

Fernanda Hin Lin Ly

As model Fernanda Hin Lin Ly leans against a Pepto pink backdrop in SoHo on a recent Monday afternoon, a pair of passersby stroll past and crane their necks—twice. The bubbly Australian beauty had better get used to it: She inspired a similar double-take reaction last week when she walked the Louis Vuitton runway in Paris, where her rose-colored hair set her apart instantly from a sea of leggy blonde and brunette counterparts, prompting a “who’s that girl?” refrain amongst showgoers seated inside Nicolas Ghesquières hypermodern set.

As it turns out, there were no pre-show trips to the salon or last-minute gimmicks leading up to Ly’s statement-making debut at the fashion house’s fall show. The eighteen-year-old model has always taken her hair into her own hands. “I was fifteen when I started [dyeing it]. I did it because I felt like it,” says Ly of experimenting with her color, which has gone through several shocking shade changes. Most recently, “I tried to go to blonde, and it came out copper. It was a disgusting orange, so I dyed it red, and slowly made it lighter and lighter,” says Ly, who has also been through variations of lavender, silver, blue, dark blue, and countless gradations of ombré. A few years back, she bought a bottle of pink hair dye, which, she recalls, inspired “a shake of disapproval from my mother—but the damage was done!”

Fernanda Ly

Expand

Photographed by Kathy Lo

That game-changing decision eventually led to Ly being spotted in a Sydney shopping center at the age of sixteen. Soon after, “I sent my photos in [to an agency], and now I’m here,” says the model, who was on holiday early last week “when I received a call to go to Paris the next day for Louis Vuitton.”

Now back in New York for a few months, her look is attracting its fair share of attention—but it doesn’t draw any stares back home. As an architecture student at the University of Technology in Sydney, “there are a bunch of us with weird hair,” she says of her classmates, adding that, if anything, “it’s odd to have normal hair.”

So what’s the upkeep for her particular shade of watercolor pink? It’s easier than you think: Ly’s favorite products include Redken’s All Soft shampoo, daily conditioner, and hydrating mask. As for the dye she uses to get her exact color, she recommends Manic Panic’s Cotton Candy Pink, which was bright at first, but has naturally faded into a seafoam variation of the shade. To maintain the integrity of the color, she washes it every third day. And while some girls her age may dream of snapping up the white shearling polar bear coat she wore down the Vuitton runway come fall, Ly is more likely to be plotting her next above-the-neck transformation. “Everyone else saves up to buy clothes—but I buy hair dye,” she admits with a smile. With dedication like that, we’ll can’t wait to see what turn her neon-toned strands will take next.

The 7 Best Model Moments From the Fall 2015 Runways

Caroline de Maigret

What makes a standout model moment? It’s more than the number of runways that a model walks, the height of her cheekbones, or the particular insouciant allure that goes into a perfectly half-tucked shirt when the girl goes “off duty”—it’s all about those singular moments that somehow, seamlessly steal the show. From stylish DJs to comebacks, here see the eight model moments that defined fall 2015.

Caroline de Maigret at H&M

Sure, Caroline de Maigret may have strutted for less than 20 seconds on the H&M fall 2015 runway, but with every step and swivel, it was a moment of pure Parisian cool. Plus, when you set off into your DJ booth-cum-spaceship in a metallic jumpsuit and those Pinterest-famed tresses, you once again solidify your longtime spot as commander of the runway.

The Breakout Star

Model Moments

Expand

Photo: Monica Feudi / Feudiguaineri.com

It only took one exclusive on the Prada runway to make “Who’s that girl?” waves ripple throughout the social media sphere. And “that girl” this season was Dominican Republic native Lineisy Montero, who went on to walk Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Céline, and Balenciaga. And with that steely, transfixing gaze, we expect that there’s lots more to come.

The Low-Key Street Style Maven

Mica Arganaz

Expand

Photographed by Phil Oh

Meet Mica Arganaraz, the model who won our hearts in the street style sphere as the representative of all things tousled-chic. Entirely slouchy cool in quintessential monochromatic off-duty garb but always with a dose of high-octane contrast, the Argentinian native’s covetable shaggy-wispy crown and her too-cool-for-school ensembles were a much-lensed-favorite on the sidewalk.

Blast From the Past

Freja Beha

Expand

Photo: Kim Weston Arnold / Indigitalimages.com

Sure, there’s always a comeback. But this season, Prabal Gurung had a whole crop of nineties and cusp-of-the-millennium heavy-hitters, including Tasha Tilberg, Kirsty Hume, Luca Gadjus, Frankie Rayder, and Christina Kruse. And then of course, there was Erin O’Connor, who opened the Marc Jacobs show and Brazilian bombshell Fernanda Tavares’ cameo at Esteben Cortazar. And as for a much-welcomed appearance by a more recent face? There was none other than Freja Beha, who opened Louis Vuitton in all of her classic, messy-haired glory.

The New Front Row

Expand

Photo: Getty Images

At this point a celebrity-heavy front row is a given, but 2015 was the year that the models took over. And it wasn’t just the #Instagirl set like Kendall Jenner, Cara Delevingne, and Jourdan Dunn (who sat pretty at Topshop): Caroline Brasch Nielsen took in the show from a ringside seat with Helena Christensen at Edun, Aymeline Valade showed face at Chloé and Ming Xi and Tao Okamoto made the rounds at Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren. Talk about a guest list takeover!

A Very Late Naomi Campbell

Naomi Campbell

Expand

Photo: Getty Images

We’ll say it once and we’ll say it again: Naomi Campbell gets a lifetime pass. And that point was best proven at Burberry this season, when she unapologetically strutted in about seven minutes late but had a look that was entirely worth the wait.

Never-Better Nepotism

Georgia May Jagger

Expand

Photo: Getty Images

Leave it to Sonia Rykiel to embrace the jackpot of gene-pools. The 2015 show was well-represented by the lucky gene club, with Jagger sisters and Georgia May, Ella Richards (daughter of Keith Richards and Lucie de la Falaise), and Kate Mosss younger half-sister Lottie Moss (making her runway debut) all present and accounted for. Which is not even to mention the brothers of both Ophélie Guillermand and Joséphine Le Tutour, who walked as well. Add in Edie Campbells younger sister Olympia, who walked Louis Vuitton, and Pat Clevelands daughter-slash-doppelganger, Anna Cleveland, who walked both Marc Jacobs and Dries Van Noten, and you’ve got nepotism done right.

Sasha Luss Is Not Like Any Other Model on Instagram—And That’s a Good Thing

Sasha Luss

Most models are pretty straightforward with Instagram. They post a selfie, and you are graced with a hashtag that reads #selfie. If they drink a green juice, you may learn that it’s #spinach— or #kale. And if they are getting a facial, you would be able to understand that due to the caption that reads #facial. (Which is not even to mention the bevy of paid-for promotional Instagrams hawking products or new ad campaigns.) But then there is blue-eyed Moscow native Sasha Luss—a seriously in-demand face who walked 23 shows this season including almost all of the major houses, has graced campaigns from Chanel to Dior, and is also basically Socrates on social media.

For Luss, or @sashaluss, and her 150K followers, she gets personal, deep, and philosophical in her social media, in Russian as often as in English. A selfie is not a mere selfie, it’s paired with a Russian pop song or a poem. A regram of a street style shot is paired with a roughly translated quote about beauty and love by Françcoise Sagan. There have even been odes to furry friends: “The eyes of dogs are surprisingly humanlike. I love them, they are smart and kind, but people treat them with evil. Love your four-legged friends. They are the only friend that you can buy.” (Point taken! We think?)

In English, Luss’s captions can be even more abstract. There are pop song lyrics, by everyone from Hozier to Counting Crows, and quotes from popular films like The Devil Wears Prada: “Yes, because that’s really what this whole multibillion-dollar industry is all about, isn’t it? Inner beauty. . . .” But lest you think Luss has anything but love for her career, cast your eyes to hashtags like “#beautyiseverywhere #thisindustryseesbothsides #insideout #loveit.” Or the existential Jack London caption on a selfie taken in bed, “I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.”

And every once in a while, her musings aren’t so profound—smiling editorial snaps accompanied by “I have a big mouth. Easy to chew,” or her posing with a nervous-looking facial expression that is described as “When u actually realize that fw is about to start o____O.” After all, even Luss understands that sometimes a beautiful photo that speaks for itself needs little explaining—though we have to admit, we really do like it when she puts her own deep-thought spin on it.

Alexander Wang’s Brunette Brigade: The Designer’s Model Army Goes Goth

Alexander Wang backstage beauty

It was a little darker than usual backstage today at Alexander Wangs downtown Pier 36 show space, where models peeked out from behind slick, slightly matted strands of jet-black hair. Among the designer’s usual lineup of raven-hued favorites, including Kendall Jenner, Binx Walton, Jamie Bochert, and Catherine McNeil, there were a few formerly blonde faces shrouded in inky, choppy layers. For Wang’s fall 2015 collection of chained, studded, and shredded separates, hairstylist Guido Palau explained, “We dyed a few of the girls black this week, because it’s just a dark-haired look. The blondes look good, but this was a heavy goth moment. I mean, listen to this music,” he said, pointing to a speaker pumping out Prodigy. “Wait until you see the shoes.”

A handful of models—including a formerly platinum Ashleigh Good—were sent to colorist Victoria Hunter at Manhattan’s Whittemore House for the transformation in advance of Wang’s show. “It’s more modern than that shiny blue black that you might get out of a box,” said Whittemore of the multi-tonal matte hue she whipped up for the occasion. “There are different levels within the hair, and more golden undertones under the base. It’s punk, but it looks natural. This is the new black.”

Once dyed, Guido and his team shaped shaggy layers around the cheekbones and cut a few swaths of forehead-skimming fringe. “It’s that late seventies–rock shape. Alex wanted to see different personalities on the runway—different haircuts, different lengths—and layers give personality,” he said, admiring Bochert’s face-framing strands as she walked by.

“I’m in my element,” admitted Bochert, whose own coffee shag seemed predestined for this show. “It’s reminding me of being a teenager, when I would dye my hair black—I was listening to The Cure and Nine Inch Nails, I was really into goth,” she said. “When I went for my fitting Alex said, ‘There’s no way I couldn’t have you in this one.’”

For a finishing touch of grunge, Palau practically soaked the models’ hair with Redken Diamond oil, pulling pieces in front of the face and pushing it over the ears. “The dirtier, the better,” he explained of the slick, slightly sweaty effect, which looked well suited to the designer’s club kids. “It’s the latest incarnation of the Alexander Wang girl,” he said. “Cool, urban, downtown.”  Prepare for a hair blackout south of Fourteenth street.
