You Can Wash Google and Levi’s New Smart Jacket as Much as You Need

Rolling out a new product, especially one that takes proof of an entirely new concept to the masses, is never going to be without its hiccups — and that’s a lesson John McCarthy has been learning over the past week. McCarthy is the head of product for Google’s Jacquard initiative, which introduced a much-touted $ 350 smart jacket with Levi’s in late September, and he’s heard one piece of feedback over and over since the launch: a complaint that you can’t wash the jacket too many times before it goes off kilter. (The care guidelines posted on Jacquard’s official site read: “the jacket is designed to withstand up to 10 washes … but your experience may vary by usage and wash conditions.”)

Why Do They Hate Science So Much?

I love science more than you do. I would have sex with science if it let me. Sometimes I worship science. It has earned my trust, unlike whatever absurdities other people believe in. I am a man of reason.

Sure, science has a few warts. Don’t we all? And remember, science is more of a journey toward truth than a destination. We expect corrections along the way. Those corrections are an essential part of the scientific journey to truth.

We know the scientific method is the best method because it was invented by Sir Isaac Newton, the same man who invented calculus, when he wasn’t conjuring gold using alchemy. But he also got several things right, including inventing gravity. Imagine no gravity, right?

I love science because it makes me smarter reading about all the results and stuff. And by that I am not talking about definitely smarter. One has no way of knowing for sure when science is done unfolding its mysteries. So until the train reaches its destination of truth – and no one really knows for sure when, or if, that will happen – we have to accept some doubt along the way. That is how rational people think. Not morons. Morons are dumb.

And so it pisses me off when people start saying that the knowledge I have been receiving at the altar of science since I was a wee boy, especially in the field of psychological research, is mostly brainwashing and bullshit, only slightly more credible than a horoscope. Why do the morons hate science? Is it a moron thing?

For context, I am guessing that dumb ol’ horoscopes, being general in nature, are accurate only about 25% of the time, by luck. Science obviously beats that. By a mile. Duh.

To back up my point, check out this article showing charts and graphs. I believe statistics and whatnot are involved. And variables. I don’t have time to get into the weeds of it. The point is that I have a preconceived notion, and I pointed you to a link, so I think we are done here.

Scott

Buy my book because I love science. More than you do.

Today, of course, high-heeled shoes are synonymous with femininity. Men who want to add a bit of height have to do so with inserts on the DL, and any non-cowboys wandering around with heels visibly higher than normal might get a few judgy looks. But for about 130 years in the 17th and 18th centuries, Western men wore heeled shoes as an expression of power.

Italian, Ferradini, 1972-1975. Worn by Elton John. Celebrities strutted on stage in outrageous outfits and high glittering heels such as this pair, but more conservative men also paired higher heeled shoes with their suits.

It makes sense if you consider the value placed on height. Tall people, particularly men, are associated with confidence and prestige — we actually tend to pay them higher salaries. So one of the questions Elizabeth Semmelhack, curator of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, poses through the exhibit is not why men wore heels at one point, but why they ever stopped.

“We’re so nervous about the idea of men in heels today,” Semmelhack told The Huffington Post. “Hopefully, what this exhibition will do is highlight for people that what’s really curious about the history of men in heels is our current attitude towards it.”

Semmelhack theorizes that heeled shoes were borrowed from Asia, where they were used for horseback riding, in the early 1600s. Persia had been gaining political influence around that time, and exoticism in dress was a symbol of high status. It wasn’t long before women began wearing heels, too. Semmelhack explained it was (somewhat unsurprisingly) trendy for women to borrow from mens’ closets in the 1600s, and there they found high-heeled shoes. Never before in the history of mankind did everyone’s butts look so fantastic.

Persian, 17th century.

The heels themselves became gendered, with slender heels for women and blocky ones for men. Then around the middle of the 18th century, men started to abandon them. But there have been exceptions. John Lennon wore boots with heels, followed by plenty of glam rockers. “Elevator shoes” (with height-boosting insoles) provided a discreet option. And somehow the cowboy boot — which is definitely a high heeled shoe for guys — has stuck around as a symbol of rugged masculinity. As we reconsider notions of gender and its role in society, the heel is a prime example of how arbitrary definitions of gender can be.

Feel free to imagine Ron Swanson in any of the shoes below. If you find yourself in Toronto, the exhibition, titled “Standing Tall: The Curious History of Men in Heels,” runs from May 8, 2015, until May 2016.

English, c. 1690-1715. This pair of men’s mules features high flared heels in keeping with turn of the 18th century fashion. The red leather covering the high heels was meant to bring attention to them and also a conveyed a sense of continental sophistication as red heels were famously worn in the court of French King XIV.

American, Justin Boots, 20th century. The packer boot, like the more iconic pull-on cowboy boot, originated on the frontier and was worn for horseback riding. Evolving from 19th century lace-up boots, packers allowed wearers to customize the fit of the boot. The addition of the low-slung heel enabled the boot to stay stable in the stirrup.

The Loft Is So Much Better Than You Think It Is Going to Be

The Loft is a surprisingly entertaining film that keeps the audience in the dark as to its villain(s) until the very end. The fact the ending is logical and difficult to anticipate makes this movie an above average feature. There is also some solid acting from a cast not particularly known for the type of roles they are inhabiting.

The premise of the film is that five friends partner up to buy a loft where they can have complete privacy. Vincent (Karl Urban) is the man with the plan but his buddies Luke (Wentworth Miller), Marty (Eric Stonestreet) and Philip (Matthias Schoenaerts) eagerly commit to their share of payment and accept their keys. All of the men are married but this does not seem to be a problem except for Chris (James Marsden) who intends to be faithful to his wife (Rhona Mitra). His fidelity lasts until he meets Anne (Rachel Taylor) and falls completely in lust.

Now all five men are using the lift for their various trysts. Everything is going smoothly until one morning they discover a body in the bed. Since there is no sign of a break in and the alarm code has been entered they become suspicious of each other. Still all claim complete innocence, but in this film no one is who or what they claim to be.

Both Urban and Marsden have more screen time than the others so they could be considered the leads. However in this movie the supporting players get to have the meatier scenes. Stonestreet who is best known for his current role on Modern Family as Cameron, is a complete surprise here as the drunken, woman chasing Marty. Equally good is Miller, who once starred in the Fox series Prison Break. Here he is an intellectual and also a shy man.

The movie operates with a present day story interspersed with numerous flashbacks. In many movies this has proven to be an annoying way of telling a story and I generally prefer a linear approach. In this film, however, the back and forth storytelling works. Each flashback provides another peeling back of a layer of deception. There is one “aha” moment after another.

In The Loft movie the women are not the prominent players but Isabel Lucas and Taylor, who play Sarah and Anne, manage to make their presence known. Both are beautiful women and that adds to the validity of their roles.

The movie is rated R for violence, profanity and nudity.

The Loft arrived with little advance fanfare so it might not even be on your entertainment radar. If you like movies that keep you in the dark until the reveal then this is a movie you want to see. Believe me, it is so much better than you think it is going to be ,

I scored The Loft a high up 7 out of 10.

Much of Society’s Unrest Caused By Barrage of Negative Stereotypes in Films

By Anthony Major
UCF Forum columnist

Everybody has a perception about what the image of art should say — or not say — but few have an informed opinion. The power of the communicative arts transcends the mere power to inform. That power is used in film, television, newspapers, radio, art, magazines, music, theatre and the new social media network as a means of influencing and shaping attitudes by providing images and opinions.

This power of film is universal as it transcends place, race and gender. It has the power to set or change behavior.

A former mentor of mine, Rheet Taylor, once explained to me there are only two types of opinions: informed and uninformed. Which one should we all desire to have? It becomes increasingly difficult, however, to become informed when only one group is calling the shots as to what that image of a particular culture is seen through the arts, especially film — which has a larger-than-life image and gets exported throughout the world. As the Andre Agassi commercial for Canon cameras years ago said: “Image is everything.”

It is my opinion that negative images of African-Americans perpetrated by some of the media is the cause of a lot of the unrest happening across our nation and around the world today. The constant barrage of images of African-Americans as troublemakers, as threatening or as menacing, are so embedded in our psyche that when incidents happen — such as we saw in Ferguson, Mo., Staten Island, N.Y., or Ohio, where a 12-year-old was shot within seconds of police arriving at the scene — many feel they are justified.

As an audience, we all bring our own personal perception and bias, but these large visual and sound images in film affect us all and alter our perception and bias to the message projected for us to see. The size of the image has a lot to do with the power of the experience. We empathize with an image that is larger than us, in an experience that we cannot control. Good or bad, we’ve experienced an adventure on film and we leave with the negative images of African-Americans portrayed on the screen.

These bigger-than-life images are how the rest of the world perceives us, and that perception — good or bad — becomes the reality.

Leaving the production of the images in the hands of the few who control the economics, who themselves were influenced by negative images, brings predictable results. For example The Color Purple, Colored Girls and Training Day, which are all good films, all portray the black man in a negative way. We get a steady dose of Tyler Perry films, where the main character is a male dressed as a female, which many black comedians did to become successful, and a ton of negative reality-television shows.

To have more positive outcomes, we need to have a balance of positive images. We all say we want positive images, but what is positive, to whom and for what purpose?

Why do we keep having incidents like the recent leaked emails between Amy Pascal, co-chair of Sony Pictures, and producer Scott Rudin about what President Obama’s favorite films would be, and the comments of an unnamed producer in a New York Post article who said “Denzel Washington (who is a two-time Academy Award winner) shouldn’t star in blockbuster movies because he is black…the international market is too racist.”

Yet films like Shaft, Superfly, Trouble Man and a bevy of other African-American films boosted Hollywood during the ’70s. And the international markets have been duplicating African-American arts, jazz, Michael Jackson’s dances, even black dress and gestures for centuries.

When African-Americans live in a pluralistic society and try to preserve their culture and its meaning, it becomes difficult in a capitalist society, where to some, increasing the bottom line at all costs is imperative.

Where does this leave the artists? The artists, who are trying to balance out the bigger-than-life power called film, need to be supported. In Hollywood studios, there has never been an African- American who can “green-light” a film. Support of African-Americans in the boardroom, with the power to green-light, may one day balance out the bigger-than-life images that are both entertaining and economically successful.

We need to do our due diligence, and research and listen to differing viewpoints of all cultures. We also need to try to understand differing opinions of how the local and foreign media view our culture. That way we can have an informed opinion about what our fellow citizens are complaining about, real or unreal.

Gwyneth Paltrow's Paint-Splattered Chanel Bag Costs How Much?

When Gwyneth Paltrow steps out carrying a Chanel bag, it’s not really surprising.

When Gwyneth Paltrow steps out carrying a Chanel bag that is covered in graffiti, essentially making it look like a dirty sack that has been stepped all over, or perhaps thrown around the bottom of an airplane, that’s a whole different story.

The actress looked airport-chic in New York on Wednesday. That is, of course, with the exception of her large, unsightly, $ 3,800 Chanel bag. We’re all about a little good street art, but mostly when it’s on the street… and free. We were also caught off guard by her choice to carry this particular style out of all the more classic options that exist. Seems a little… non-goop to us.

Of course, if she wants to carry a paint-splattered bag, that’s her prerogative. And if she wants to carry a bag that could pay for a few months of rent in New York City? That’s cool too. After all, she doesn’t really care what we think, anyway.

What do you think of Paltrow’s purse? Sound off below!
