5 Cool Things You Need to Know About Crown & Caliber

Crown & Caliber founder Hamilton Powell came up with the idea of a creating a trustworthy online wristwatch marketplace when listening to a friend complain about trying to sell a Patek Philippe Gondolo. That friend’s options were limited to eBay, Craigslist or, the option he went with, the local pawnshop.

The watch was sold to the pawnshop for $ 5,200, but when the friend walked back through the doors a few weeks later, he noticed the price tag said $ 12,500. Ouch. The fact is, before Crown & Caliber came onto the scene, the business of buying used luxury watches was one seemingly destined to stay fraught with uncertainty. On the authenticity side, even high-profile buyers have admittedly been taken advantage of in the shadowy world of fake Rolexes.

Since launching its website five years ago, the company has helped thousands find the piece of their dreams and sleep soundly in the process, all while building a cool community of collectors. Here’s everything you need to know.

TAG Heuer Carrera (1)

IT EMPLOYS A TEAM OF SWISS-TRAINED WATCHMAKERS

Once a watch comes through the doors of the Atlanta headquarters, it gets fully inspected by a team of classically trained watchmakers, technicians, and refinishers. The kind of people who love watches so much they would be tinkering with timepieces even if they weren’t getting paid for it. This team of specialists makes sure that each outgoing product is operating to their Swiss-certified standards, is made of authentic parts and, of course, keeps accurate time.

ITS INSTAGRAM WILL SERIOUSLY UPGRADE YOUR FEED

Our social media feed is always in need for more mechanics and less bad food photos, which makes @crownandcaliber an easy click. Expect plenty of desirable wrist candy like the Rolex GMT-Master II “Pepsi” or the OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra. Not only that, but they also do a great job of spotlighting iconic watch lovers with their favorite pieces, like Buzz Aldrin with his OMEGA Speedmaster or Steve McQueen with his Tag Heuer Monaco.

IT PRODUCES A SLICK SERIES CALLED “WATCH STORIES”

The artful docu-series profiles people within the diverse watch community, from sportscar racers to auction house heads to chefs, and goes in-depth on the moments and pieces that define them as collectors. Their latest is with renaissance gentleman and Crown & Caliber ambassador Spike Feresten, who hosts one of the most popular automotive podcasts Spike’s Car Radio for Podcast One. Feresten wrote for fellow car enthusiast Jerry Seinfeld on the hit sitcom Seinfeld, and like his old boss he has the kind of car collection that will make any red-blooded man drool. Not to mention a watch collection to match, stocked with racing brands like Rolexes, Tag Heuers, and Tudors.

IT EVEN OFFERS COOL ACCESSORIES BEYOND TIMEPIECES

For most men, spreading your regular watches out on the bureau for selection is a perfectly passable way to display them. But if you are a Crown & Caliber kind of guy, you may be looking for a slightly more elevated presentation. Luckily it also offers watch boxes, cases, and winders from luxury designers WOLF. Family-owned since it was founded in the 1800s, the team designs the products to be passed down generations, just like your watches.

THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERY RANGE OF COLLECTOR

Whether you are a young professional looking for your first statement piece, or a seasoned collector, there is something for you on Crown & Caliber. The selection features over 40 brands, including signature pieces like the Cartier Tank Francaise, inspired by the French Army’s Renault FT-17 Army Tanks, and the Panerai Radiomir Black Seal. For those in search of their “grail watch”, you may want to check in on the regular; currently a like-new IWC Portuguese Minute Repeater Limited Edition can be snagged for $ 50,000. Looking to treat yourself? Pour a scotch and set aside some time to click through over 2000 timepieces. Better make it a double.

You can shop all the watches at crownandcaliber.com.

This Is the Skincare Regimen You Need to Clear and Prevent Acne

We’ve all had a pimple—or a colony of them—every one as unwelcome as the last. Sometimes they’re fleeting, a result of poor post-gym hygiene, while other breakouts are chronic, a result of genetics or stress.

Regardless of the origins, or if you’re already panicking about the appearance of the next ones, you can make an effort to maximize your skin health. But, with so many mixed messages it’s hard to know what works and doesn’t, including the most effective products for warding off breakouts.

The Skincare Products a Dermatologist Travels With

That’s why we sourced unbiased experts—a pool of board-certified dermatologist, actually—and asked them for the best products that round out an anti-acne regimen, be they preventative, reactive, or both. Here’s the regimen you should put into practice immediately. You’ll notice long-standing, skin-clearing effects some 2-3 months down the line—as well as far fewer breakouts and remnants along the way.

Start with the right cleanser—and cleanse 2x per day

Salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and benzoyl peroxide: These are three ingredients you should memorize. Each one is effective at preventing and minimizing breakouts.

“An effective salicylic acid wash (such as CLn Acne Wash) is a great way to start the day,” says Rhonda Klein, M.D.

Salicylic acid and glycolic acid work to dissolve dead cells that might clog pores.

“And a benzoyl peroxide 2-5% wash is a great anti-acne evening cleanser (such as PanOxyl),” she adds, since it fights the bacteria that take residence in your pores during the day.

The lower grades, around 2%, are good for your face, and the higher grades, nearing 5%, are good for your body.

The Best Minimalist Skincare Regimen, According to Dermatologists

Kassie Gaitz, M.D., suggests benzoyl-peroxide cleansers in particular to her patients who suffer from acne breakouts on the back, chest, and shoulders.

You might hear about benzoyl peroxide topical creams that can be worn overnight. Speak with your dermatologist about whether or not this is a good route for you. They tend to be high grades that can dry out your skin, plus they bleach your towels and pillowcases, which can make it an expensive habit.

There’s another overnight solution anyway, one that nearly every single dermatologist recommends; we’ll get to that later down the list.

Only use scrubs preventatively

Marisa Garshick, M.D., warns that scrubs will only aggravate acne. They should instead be used cautiously on skin that’s already clear—preventatively, that is—and you should rely on the other products on this list to minimize existing breakouts.

Use a non-comedogenic moisturizer

If you are prone to acne, then you might want to avoid oil-based moisturizers, says Jennifer S. Kitchin, M.D. They are comedogenic, meaning they clog your pores and lead to one-off pimples or bigger breakouts. Instead, stick with oil-free, non-comedogenic products (look for that term), like Olay Complete Lotion All Day Moisturizer With SPF 15.

Use retinol products overnight

Retinol is the miracle cream. It’s universally accepted as the best defense against signs of aging, and an essential pillar of a minimalist skincare regimen. It’s also going to be your key defense against acne, since it minimizes pores, balances the skin, and even reduces deep acne scars that otherwise take months to get rid of. It’s important to use them overnight for a couple reasons: 1.) They work with the body’s regenerative cycle to expedite healing and improve your skin. 2.) They make you sensitive to light and are deactivated by UV exposure. (So you need to cleanse thoroughly and use an SPF–packed product the next morning.

Can Vitamin C Serums Slow Aging and Undo Sun Damage?

Kimberly Jerden, M.D., recommends speaking with your dermatologist first and foremost, to decide if a prescription-grade retinoid is best for you. That being said, “aside from my favorite prescription retinoids, I am picky about buying over the counter retinoids because many aren’t strong enough or not proven to convert,” she says.

But there is one she endorses wholeheartedly: PCA Intensive Clarity Treatment 0.5% Pure Retinol.

Do a mask once per week

An at-home face mask feels incredible, and that’s because it’s doing good to your skin: It absorbs all the grease and gunk that accumulates in your pores—deep from within the pores, that is—and gives you a very clean canvas from which to start your week. Dhaval Bhanusali, M.D., warns against doing masks too often though.

“Masks are strong. They often have salicylic acid, which, given the occlusion of the mask, really helps get the acid into the oil glands of the skin,” he says. “This then decreases oil production.”

In a bad way, since your skin’s oil is what keeps it hydrated. It’s merely the excess oil you want to eradicate. So, limit yourself to once a week on deep-cleaning masks in order to avoid excessive drying.

However, you can’t really overdo the ultra-hydrating masks, since they have a different and pro-nourishment objective.) Precede a cleansing mask with an actual cleanse, follow it with a rinse, then a moisturizer (or a retinol if it’s the end of the day). Have a look at our favorite masks, as well as the favorites of our dermatologists.

You Know You Need A New Lawyer When…

– The prosecutor sees your lawyer in the hall, and they high-five each other.

– During your initial consultation he tries to sell you Amway.

– He tells you that his last good case was a “Budweiser.”

– He picks the jury by playing “duck-duck-goose.”

– During the trial you catch him playing his Gameboy.

– Every couple of minutes he yells, “I call Jack Daniels to the stand!” and proceeds to drink a shot.

– He frequently gives juror No. 4 the finger.

– Just before he says “Your Honor,” he makes those little quotation marks in the air with his fingers.

– Whenever his objection is overruled, he tells the judge, “Whatever.”

– He giggles every time he hears the word “briefs.”

– He keeps citing the legal case of Godzilla v. Mothra.

– He begins closing arguments with, “As Ally McBeal once said…”

You Can Wash Google and Levi’s New Smart Jacket as Much as You Need

Rolling out a new product, especially one that takes proof of an entirely new concept to the masses, is never going to be without its hiccups — and that’s a lesson John McCarthy has been learning over the past week. McCarthy is the head of product for Google’s Jacquard initiative, which introduced a much-touted $ 350 smart jacket with Levi’s in late September, and he’s heard one piece of feedback over and over since the launch: a complaint that you can’t wash the jacket too many times before it goes off kilter. (The care guidelines posted on Jacquard’s official site read: “the jacket is designed to withstand up to 10 washes … but your experience may vary by usage and wash conditions.”)

New York Cares and The Fashion Foundation Help New Yorkers in Need

‘TIS THE SEASON: More than halfway to its goal of collecting 125,000 donated coats, this year’s annual New York Cares Coat Drive has less than a week to go.
New Yorkers can drop off coats at multiple locations including the group’s West 31st Street warehouse, any New York Police Department precinct, all Queens library branches and Grand Central Terminal or Penn Station through Dec. 31. Those who don’t have jackets to give can text “coat” to 41444 to donate money that will be used by the nonprofit to buy and deliver coats. The city has at least 1.7 million people living below the poverty line including 60,000 who are without permanent housing, according to a New York Cares spokeswoman.
The group has collected and donated 1.8 million coats to New Yorkers in need over the past 29 years. This year’s requests from shelters, social service agencies and schools is an increase compared to last year’s tally of 109,000 coats.
Another local group, The Fashion Foundation, recently wrapped up another charitable initiative. Founder Amanda Munz helped to brighten the holidays for 100 students in three different Brooklyn schools by arranging for each of them to receive a complementary gift-laden backpack. Everything you need to know about the CMA Awards

Put on your cowboy boots! It’s almost time for country music’s biggest night. If it’s anything like in past years, the 51st Annual Country Music Awards will feature heartwarming performances, comedic sketches from the hosts and exciting award reveals. Here is everything you need to know before Wednesday night. Who’s Hosting? This year’s CMA Awards hosts came as a surprise to no one: 2017 will be Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood‘s 10th consecutive year hosting the show. In their last nine ceremonies, the hilarious pair have had some unforgettable moments. There was the 2008 comedic parody “Mamas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Kanye,” which Paisley (a 14-time CMA Awards winner) penned, and the 2011 “Tim and Faith Have Barbies” sketch, which was Underwood’s idea. The cohosts prepared for their ‘Gangnam Style’ dance onstage in 2012 with three weeks of practice and coaching from a former Michael Jackson choreographer, they revealed at a CMA Festival event in June. But perhaps the most iconic bit by the dynamic duo happened in 2014. Paisley took the stage and revealed to the world that five-months-pregnant Underwood would be having a boy: “I’m so happy! I know something y’all don’t know!” Paisley said to the crowd before revealing the baby’s sex. Who’s Performing? JUST ANNOUNCED! First #CMAawards performers revealed including @GarthBrooks, @CarrieUnderwood, @LittleBigTown AND MORE!! Watch them perform LIVE Wed, Nov. 8 on @ABCNetwork. See all performers at CMAawards.com A post shared by Country Music Association (@cma) on Oct 18, 2017 at 6:00am PDT This year’s ceremony will feature performances by some of country music’s biggest stars, including Carrie Underwood, Garth Brooks, Miranda Lambert, Thomas Rhett, Brothers Osborne, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Little Big Town, Old Dominion, Jon Pardi, Chris Stapleton and Alan Jackson — to name a few. Jackson is a 2017 Country Music Hall of Fame inductee who has received 81 CMA Awards nominations throughout his career; this year will be his 24th CMA performance. But beyond those performances, the show will also highlight some exciting collaborations. Reba McEntire — the most nominated female in CMA Awards history — will be paired with her competition for Female Vocalist of the Year: Kelsea Ballerini. The 24-year-old “Yeah Boy” singer is a five-time award nominee, and 62-year-old Reba is a 50-time nominee. FormerOne Direction star Niall Horan will make his CMA performance debut with country’s Maren Morris to perform their pop-country crossover song “Going Blind,” which Horan released on his debut solo album, Flicker, last month. Other collaborating pairs will include Dierks Bentley and Rascal Flatts, who are nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year and Vocal Group of the Year, as well as Brad Paisley and Kane Brown. What About the Nominees? Miranda Lambert is this year’s top nominee with five nods total, and her 11th nomination in the Female Vocalist category, which she has won a record six consecutive times between 2010 and 2015. Lambert has a total of 44 CMA Awards nominations spanning her career and is the most awarded woman in CMA Awards history, nabbing 12 trophies since 2010. Tying for second-most nominations are Little Big Town and Keith Urban, who each earned four nominations total. Other notable include people from all throughout the entire country music sphere: Garth Brooks, Luke Bryan, Chris Stapleton, Rascal Flatts, Florida Georgia Line, Lady Antebellum and many more. Taylor Swift‘s name even appears on the nominee list: The country-turned-pop singer is up for Song of the Year for her songwriting on LBT’s hit “Better Man.” Who Did NOT Make the Nominee List? Many were surprised that country star Blake Shelton — five-time Vocalist of The Year and a current coach on The Voice — was not nominated for a single category. Another list absentee is “They Don’t Know” singer Jason Aldean, who recently won Entertainer of the Year at the 2017 American Country Music Awards in April. Although Lambert has the most nods of any artist, some fans were surprised she did not receive one for the Entertainer of The Year category, which has no female nominees this year. Read the full list of nominations here. Who Decides the Winners? The nominees and winners are chosen by the 6,300 industry professional members of Country Music Association. Established in 1958, CMA was the first trade organization dedicated to a specific genre of music. The first CMA Awards show was held in 1967 and it has since become the longest-running annual music awards program on network television. This year’s CMA Awards will be held at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. ET. The show will air live on ABC.

Port 101: Everything You Need to Know About This Oft-Misunderstood Wine

port

Slowly, port is shedding its image of old-fashioned grandeur. While the sweet after-dinner quaff still suffers from stodgy connotations of a pipe-smoking grandfather reading Proust by the fireplace, this antiquated perception is unfortunate. Like sherry, which has seen an explosive nationwide resurgence thanks to bartenders weaving it into their contemporary concoctions, port is a fortified wine modern-day imbibers are beginning to rediscover. Sipped on its own, it’s a silky complement to the likes of post-prandial bleu cheese and bittersweet chocolate ganache tarts, or can even be relished alongside pork tenderloin; incorporated into cocktails, it adds a luxurious heft welcomed in autumnal tipples. Behold, an abbreviated primer on Portugal’s oft-misunderstood wine.

What Is Port?

In the same company as sherry, Madeira, and Marsala, port is a fortified wine—not to be confused with dessert wines like foie gras–happy Sauternes from France or Tokaji from Hungary, which boast large quantities of natural sugar. A fortified wine means its fermentation process has been halted by a jolt of grape spirit or brandy. This additional surge of alcohol ensures residual sugar and the sweet, lush mouthfeel synonymous with port. History buffs, take note: This process traces its roots back to the 18th century, when a spat between Great Britain and France led the Brits to Portugal to indulge their usually French-sated wine habits. A reinforcement of brandy ensured the wine they procured would still be fresh after the long haul back home. A roll call of such well-known port producers, including Taylor’s, Croft, Sandeman, and Graham’s, signifies how intertwined port’s history is with Great Britain’s.

Port is made exclusively in Portugal’s remote, verdant Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the northern part of the country that is hailed as the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. On intensely steep hillsides, narrow terraces of vineyards teem with indigenous grape varieties like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinto Cão.

The mountainous landscape is staggering, best glimpsed from a train winding its way up from charming Oporto, the coastal city from which the wine takes its name. Although the grapes are grown in the Douro Valley, they have long been brought down the river in rabelo boats to be aged and bottled in the more weather-opportune caves of Vila Nova de Gaia, then marketed and exported from Oporto. At least one night in Oporto, say, dining on cod with “exploding” olives at Cantinho do Avillez and sleeping at the glamorous wine-themed The Yeatman hotel—where a treatment at the Caudalíe Vinothérapie Spa is mandatory—provides an urban contrast to the appealing rusticity of the Douro.

The Murderer’s Row, developed by cocktail educator Andy Seymour, features Fonseca Bin No. 27, bourbon, pear juice, muddled blackberries, lemon juice, and agave syrup.

What Are the Styles?

Given port’s tremendous aging potential, it is available in a number of (admittedly confusing) varieties. These are the different types one is most likely to encounter on a wine list:

White port: Port immediately conjures the image of a brooding red wine, but less well-known white port is its drier, zippier sibling. Bartenders, realizing its potential as a quenching alternative to gin, are now keen to meld it with tonic in myriad permutations. In this form, or simply on the rocks with a slice of citrus, it makes for a perfect summertime aperitif.
Bottle to try: Fonseca Siroco

Pink port: Spawned from red grapes, pink port is a relative newcomer to the category. Fresh and light-bodied, it can be served chilled and mixes rather nicely in bright cocktails.
Bottle to try: Croft Pink Port

Ruby port: Affordable and accessible, ruby is a great entry point for port drinkers. Comprised of a blend of grapes that hasn’t been aged for more than three years, it’s fruity and meant to be savored young.
Bottle to try: Fonseca Bin No. 27

Tawny port: This blended port, a go-to companion for dessert, acquires its distinctive amber hue from prolonged aging in oak before bottling. When a tawny is designated a colheita, it means the bottle contains grapes from one stellar vintage.
Bottle to try: Taylor Fladgate 20-Year-Old

Vintage port: This top-notch port is the most revered, but constitutes just a tiny portion of port sales. Aged in a barrel, then unfiltered and further aged in the bottle, it acquires complexity (and crust) and stars the grapes of one spectacular vintage. Save it for special occasions.
Bottle to try: Croft 2011 Vintage Port

Late-bottled vintage port: Less expensive than coveted vintage port, these wines spend more time softening in wood and are ready to be drunk as soon as they are bottled.
Bottle to try: Niepoort 2011 Late Bottled Vintage

The By the Fireside, served at Manhattan bar the Up & Up, is made with Croft 10-Year-Old tawny port, Café du Monde chicory coffee syrup, lemon juice, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

How Do You Drink It?

Port, in its naked, unadulterated state, is firmly entrenched in nightcap territory with good reason: It’s a heady send-off that lingers. Splurge on one of the great vintage ports and one might not crave anything else beyond good company and music. But it would also mesh nicely with aged Gouda or hearty venison. A ruby, abundant in fruit flavors, is a natural complement to desserts like blackberry cobbler or a juicy juxtaposition to a platter of smoked meats, while washing down salted almonds with white port is a magical sensation. Whether it’s with caramel flan or a chocolate layer cake, tawnies are what to seek out when the sweet tooth strikes.

But there’s now another alluring way to acquaint oneself with port, and that’s by drinking cocktails. Adrian Bridge, CEO of the Fladgate Partnership, which encompasses the brands Taylor’s, Fonseca, and Croft, says that Croft Pink was developed with cocktails especially in mind. “Port has an immense range of styles. The sommelier cares about the vintage port, but give the more accessible Croft Pink to a bartender and there are no rules. Bartenders have proven that port isn’t this scary thing that can only be sipped to toast the Queen of England,” he jokes.

At The Yeatman, which Bridge also runs, the Port Tonic is a staple, blending one part white port with two parts tonic, ice, and mint. An ideal summer tipple, it has been reimagined by countless bartenders, who turn to unexpected ingredients like basil and marmalade to give it depth. As the colder months wear on, however, it’s time for more nuanced creations like the holiday-perfect Coffee Cocktail. This frothy classic, which first appeared in the circa-1887 third edition of Jerry Thomas’s cocktail behemoth The Bartenders Guide, contains no energizing caffeine, but does unite ruby port and Cognac with a whole egg and simple syrup.

“The use of port in cocktails creates a great flavor combination because, depending on the style, it can add sweetness, tannins, and color at the same time,” says Alba Huerta, proprietress of hit Houston bar Julep. “The sugar levels are high, but the traces of wine production are also present. It can usually keep for a few weeks, unlike wine that keeps for a few days, so you can use it several times without the concern of it turning too quickly.”

Last holiday season, patrons of Cure, in New Orleans, were treated to the Bird of Paradise, mingling white port with Bittermens’ Commonwealth Tonic Liqueur, lemon juice, and whole nutmeg. Those who settle into Chicago joint Parson’s Chicken & Fish for the night can wait for their hush puppies with a Purple Drink, a mélange of table wine, port, and orange blossom water that tastes like a melted Popsicle. In New York City, at Brooklyn hangout Dram, Tonia Guffey makes the Feed Me Diamonds, an ode to the MNDR song of the same name. “It’s so eerie and beautiful,” Guffey points out. “It made me want to craft a drink around it.” The result was mixing Taylor Fladgate 10 Year Old Tawny Port with Armagnac, lemon juice, crème de cassis, and cinnamon simple syrup capped off with champagne.

“To be fed diamonds was something people would allegedly do to overthrow tyrannical figures. In this song, the dictator is her head fighting with her heart. She’s consumed by love. She says, ‘What’s the good in being good?’ To me that was like, ‘Yeah, fuck being good and behaving. Give me luxuries.’ So naturally I picked up a rich, round 10-year tawny port because it’s so decadent and elegant,” explains Guffey. “While it makes an excellent sipper, mixing with port is really sneaky and awesome because it’s got the body to hold up to spirits and the complexity is really wonderful. After shaking it up, I topped it with sparkling Brut, because again, if you’re going to be bad, be downright sinful.”

Will Kim Kardashian Need Emergency Surgery?

Kim Kardashian is facing frightening issues surrounding her long-awaited second pregnancy, as sources claim the mother-to-be may have to have her uterus removed after giving birth.

During her first pregnancy, she suffered from placenta accreta, a condition in which the placenta grows too deeply attached to the uterine wall. In the video clip above, The Doctors explain that she may have this problem again during her second pregnancy, and it could lead to an emergency hysterectomy.

Celebrity Health Challenges

“Basically, this is an abnormal implantation of the placenta,” explains Dr. Jennifer Ashton, an OB-GYN, who is not Kardashian’s treating physician. “Normally, the placenta sits inside the uterine cavity and after the baby is born, it detaches or it’s removed without difficulty.” With placenta accreta, however, it can be very difficult to detach. Dr. Ashton adds, “It can cause catastrophic hemorrhage or bleeding … This is a major obstetrical issue.”

What to Expect When Your Water Breaks

The condition affects about 1 in 530 pregnancies, and typically a C-section delivery is planned before the woman’s due date, with a multidisciplinary surgical team in the room in case the mother’s life needs to be saved via surgery.

Everything You Need to Know About Day Three of Paris Fashion Week

paris fashion week lanvin

The fashion scene was abuzz with the news out of Paris Fashion Week’s third day, from the supermodels on Balmain’s runway to the upside-down ones on Rick Owens’s. Get the scoop on those stories and more here.

1. The day started at Chloé, where Clare Waight Keller crafted an ode to women recognizable by one name only: “Kate, Chloé, Cecilia, Corinne, Rosemary, Emma, and Courtney.” The results ranged from rave-ready pants to dreamy day dresses.

2. Julien Dossena sent out pieces at Paco Rabanne that played on fashion’s dual obsessions: athleisure and nostalgia. We think they’d fare best at this summer’s music festivals, places where the cool factor is just as important as the comfort one.

3. Olivier Rousteing presented a slinky safari at Balmain today that culminated in a series of cascading ruffles.

4. At Balmain, Sam McKnight readied Rousteing’s army with bombshell ponytails, telling Vogue.com, “She’s sexy, yes, but she’s really more of a warrior.”

5. Behold, the week’s most exciting star snaps, including the unlikely pairing of Diplo and Travis Scott at Balmain.

6. Rick Owens, Paris’s resident fashion philosopher, offered a treatise of women’s strength, harnessing models together for their march out. Oh, and there was some relatable ready-to-wear, too.

7. There was a certain “greatest hits” mood at Alber Elbaz’s Spring collection for Lanvin, with reworkings of the themes he knows and loves: deconstruction, sequins, loose glamour, and the house of Lanvin itself.

8. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself reaching for the bobby pins and bows this weekend. Guido Palau’s artfully messed chignons at Lanvin were as charming as Elbaz’s clothes.

10. From DHL tees to velvet midi dresses, Vetements’s Spring collection covered a lot of ground. Mixed in with the oversize blazers and shrunken corsets was plenty for the brand’s cool-kid customer to fawn over.

11. Just because Gosha Rubchinskiy doesn’t show a women’s collection doesn’t mean he can’t make an appearance at Paris Fashion Week. The Russian designer tried his hand at modeling, opening the Vetements show.

12. Get a closer look at The Row’s one-off presentation at the Château de Courances, complete with live music and plenty of French fare.

Everything You Need to Know About Day Two of Paris Fashion Week

maison margiela spring 2016

It’s safe to say that a little glitz has made its way to Paris Fashion Week. It was there in the crystal trimming at Maison Margiela, the sequin embellishment at Dries Van Noten, and—most of all—the gilded affair held in the Tuileries by Pat McGrath and Vogue.com to celebrate the launch of her first product, a shimmering gold pigment. Catch up on all that news and more from the City of Light, below.

1. In between the shows, Pat McGrath and Vogue took over the Tuileries offering golden makeovers to lucky guests. Among the revelers were Bella Hadid, Stella Maxwell, and Jamie Bochert.

2. But before McGrath hit the Tuileries, she crafted a space-age silvery look at Maison Margiela.

Photo: Kim Weston Arnold / Indigitalimages.com

3. But what of the Margiela looks? John Galliano sent out one of his most commercially viable collections yet, with cropped blazers, ankle-length skirts, and plenty of accessories. That isn’t to say it wasn’t an artful trip through his many inspirations, from ’50s ladies to Japanese geishas.

4. Galliano’s bias-cut skirts at Maison Margiela know no gender. Meet the male models who strutted out on the designer’s catwalk.

5. With flowy blouses printed with phrases lifted from Paul Nougé poems (“Je suis belle on me l’a dit” appeared on a roomy blouse), the Lemaire woman was feeling good this season. Perhaps because, as one editor confided, she was planning on dropping $ 1,000 on pieces from the brand’s Uniqlo collab.

6. One can always count on Dries Van Noten for a phantasmagoria of color and print, but this season was really something. Inspired by women of impeccable—and adventurous—personal style like Madonna and Peggy Guggenheim, the designer sent out swirling furniture prints, sequin embellished jackets, and semi-transparent turtlenecks that added a surreal styling twist.

7. “Location, location, location!” goes the adage about New York City real estate, and as two New Yorkers, Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen must know it well. They chose a château outside Paris to stage a show for their top clientele, presenting their shirred chiffon minidresses and flowing caftans against a romantic scene.

8. What Virgil Abloh does with the simple inspiration of jeans and a T-shirt at Off-White is anything but basic. See the designer’s latest in experimentation here.

9. Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant’s debut at Courrèges focused on updated permutations of the Courrèges classics.

Mickey Factz: Drake I Heard You Need A Ghostwriter, Hit Me Up (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) It seems Aubrey Drake Graham will not be able to shake the ghostwriting tag any time soon. Yet another emcee keeps the story going. This time it was New York City rhymer Mickey Factz.

[ALSO READ: Drake’s Producer Noah “40” Shebib Once Said: You Have No Credibility If Someone Writes Your Raps]

The Y-3 mixtape creator stopped by Sway In The Morning, and he started his visit off by participating in Sway’s5 Fingers of Death.” Factz ended a nearly 11-minute rap with a message for Drake.

“Aubrey, I heard you need a ghostwriter. Hit me up man, if you want some more fire,” spit Mickey.

Later in the interview, Factz talked about connecting with Drake before he reached superstar status. The two rappers teamed with Travis McCoy for the track “Overdose.”

“I was a fan of Drake before he was popular. I would go on his Myspace page, and he had a record up there with Trey Songz and Pusha T,” explained Mickey. “I reached out to him , and said ‘Yo, we need to work.’”

According to Factz, he and Drizzy worked on other music together that did not make it onto So Far Gone. Apparently they lost contact after Drake signed to Lil Wayne’s Young Money.

Mickey stated he’s not bitter about his current career situation. He told Sway he just wants to be mentioned among great lyricists such as Elzhi, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Kxng Crooked, and Rakim.

Do Transgender People Still Need To Take Hormones After Their Reassignment Surgery?

Model, actress, and designer Isis King may have been born biologically male, but ever since childhood she knew she was woman. Establishing a transgender identity does not come easy though, and at 23, Isis was homeless, living at a New York City LGBT shelter. After finding work as a background model for an America’s Next Top Model photo shoot, host Tyra Banks took an interest in her, and asked Isis be a part of the show’s next season. Within months, Isis was in the national spotlight as the first transgender contestant on Top Model, and she has used her platform to follow her dreams ever since – expanding her modeling and acting career, designing her own fashion line, and serving as an activist for transgender people everywhere.

Hormones and Testosterone?
Taking hormones was the first medical change Isis adopted in her transition from male to female. Does she still have to take them? “Yes!” she says emphatically. Even after genital reassignment surgery, Isis doesn’t naturally produce female hormones. Continuing to take the hormones helps with health issues in her new body – avoiding osteoporosis and the like. “It’s almost postmenopausal,” she says. One benefit of the reassignment surgery is that her hormones have a little less competition – she no longer produces testosterone.

What Friends Really Need From You When They’re In Pain

When a friend or loved one is in pain, it’s likely that your immediate reaction is to offer comfort. You may want to help through your actions or your words, but this nurturing instinct is often trailed by one nagging fear: What if I do or say the wrong thing?

No matter what situation is causing your friend to hurt, life coach Iyanla Vanzant believes that there is one universal approach you can take to help ease their pain.

“Your presence is enough,” Iyanla says. “Sometimes you don’t have to have anything to say… You don’t have to bring anything to the table. Your presence is enough.”

Iyanla has seen the power of this principle work firsthand in her experience as a spiritual advisor and the host of “Iyanla: Fix My Life.” Not only does she take the time to listen to those in the midst of crises, but Iyanla also encourages their loved ones to be fully present and open their hearts as well. That, she adds, is when an additional move towards healing can take place.

“In the stillness and the silence of your presence, pray,” Iyanla suggests.

This prayer doesn’t have to a prayer in the religious sense of the word; rather, it’s about putting forth good vibes and positive energy, beginning with how you personally view your friend in this moment of despair.

“Don’t see the person as ‘broken,’ and don’t see them as where they are right now,” Iyanla says. “Call in and see for them the end result.”

If you’re concerned that allowing yourself to be fully present might invite negativity into your own space, don’t be, Iyanla says. The exact opposite happens.

“Just because your friend is hurting doesn’t mean you have to get down in the pain with them. In fact, in your presence, you can pull the energy up and pull them out of the pain,” Iyanla explains. “Just remember: Your presence is enough.”

The new season of “Iyanla: Fix My Life” premieres on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 9 p.m. ET on OWN, with an emotional, three-part episode focusing on the coming out stories of two gay pastors.

Vogue’s Fall Music Guide: The 12 Albums You Need This Season

lana del rey

As you head indoors after Labor Day, let good music on good speakers be your consolation prize. Here, twelve albums to watch out for this fall, including big-ticket moments from Justin Bieber and Lana Del Rey—and a handful of surprises.

Empress Of, Me (September 11)

Empress Of is Lorely Rodriguez, a 25-year-old singer who writes, produces, and engineers everything entirely on her own, and who composed her debut album while living alone in a tiny town in Mexico. A feeling of seclusion is everywhere on this album, from the title—the defiantly independent Me—to the sense in all its songs that she is dancing by herself, even when laying her voice on top of a joyful club beat. Me is uniquely, undeniably pretty.

Lana Del Rey, Honeymoon (September 18)

Is it possible that Lana Del Rey is finally fed up? On the first single, “High by the Beach,” from her upcoming album, Honeymoon, Del Rey sounds ready to kick out whatever jerk caused the two albums’ worth of agita. What does Del Rey sound like without the toxic guy? Not all that different, actually: just as noirish, if maybe a little looser and jazzier. She’s left behind the psych rock of last year’s Ultraviolence, and though “High by the Beach” reignites some of the hip-hop influence of her first album, the other Honeymoon tracks released so far feature Del Rey singing like a crooning Isabella Rossellini in Blue Velvet, the character she was probably always destined to play.

Fetty Wap, Fetty Wap (September 25)

Is there a more joyful presence in music than Fetty Wap, the 25-year-old singer-rapper from New Jersey? His song “Trap Queen” has been inescapable this year, with Wap’s signature howl, which splits the difference between Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Drake, ringing out from seemingly every passing car in America. His string of follow-up singles has all been promising, too, so expect this self-titled debut album to be a major crowd-pleaser.

Disclosure, Caracal (September 25)

It’s not easy to pull off a sophomore album when your debut lights the world on fire, as Disclosure’s first record of house music, 2013’s Settle, so forcefully did. “Latch,” which introduced the world to Sam Smith’s voice, is probably as close to a mandatory wedding party jam as anyone has recorded in this decade. But Disclosure, made up of brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence, has managed to make a second album, Caracal, that is a little poppier but not a huge departure. Smith is back for the first single, “Omen,” and Lorde and Lion Babe guest on a pair of exuberant tracks.

Julia Holter, Have You in My Wilderness (September 25)

Critics have used all kinds of labels to describe Julia Holter’s elusive music—“ambient pop,” “art pop,” and “baroque pop,” to name a few—but “sweater-weather pop” would work just fine, too. There are layers upon layers of ornate sounds in her music, and, coupled with her gleaming voice, Have You in My Wilderness feels like a cozy, if slightly ominous, embrace.

Janet Jackson, Unbreakable (October 2)

Everything teased so far from Janet Jackson’s new album—her first in seven years—is excitement-heightening. The opening single, “No Sleeep,” which hit the radio this summer, is promisingly slinky. There is a collaboration with Missy Elliott, in all of her post–Super Bowl glory. And, most awesomely, Unbreakable finds Jackson reuniting with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the Minneapolis producers who collaborated on all of her best work, from Control through All for You.

Kelela, Hallucinogen EP (October 9)

And speaking of Ms. Jackson, Kelela sounds a bit like the Rhythm Nation pop idol on “Rewind,” the first single from her upcoming EP, Hallucinogen. The Brooklyn R&B singer is incredible at mixing and mashing influences, from techno to Y2K pop, and then spitting it all out in totally seductive, modern ways. Cut 4 Me, her 2013 debut mixtape, is a master class in contemporary cool, and all signs point to Hallucinogen being equally slick.

Alex G, Beach Music (October 9)

Alex G’s pensive indie pop has been an insider favorite for years, and his songwriting has garnered him comparisons to Elliott Smith, albeit a slightly peppier version. Now the 22-year-old artist is following up last year’s watershed DSU by releasing his first album on a major label. It finds him opening up his sound a bit—there’s a trumpet!—while still maintaining the intimacy that makes his music so inviting.

Joanna Newsom, Divers (October 23)

It’s been five years since Joanna Newsom put out her last album, an eternity to her loyal hive of enraptured fans. We still know very little about Divers, but the first single, “Sapokanikan,” is classic Newsom, influenced by the Old World but excitingly urgent, too. The song is named for the Lenape village that existed on the island of Manhattan before the Europeans arrived, and the video, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (who directed Newsom in Inherent Vice), is a simple close-up shot of Newsom skipping through modern-day New York City, humming along as the song descends from its pleasant opening piano into slightly more foreboding sounds.

Grimes, TBD (October)

Grimes has been through quite a lot since the release of her highly acclaimed Visions, the album that made her a star in 2012. She reportedly recorded an entire album only to scrap it because, as she wrote on her Tumblr, “it was depressing.” A couple of one-off songs, “REALiTi” and “Go,” seemed to indicate an impending release, and then nothing came of them. But finally, in May, she confirmed in a series of tweets that her new album will come out in October. No title yet, but all signs point to it being worth the wait.

Justin Bieber, TBD (November 13)

If you’re not back on the Bieber bus—if the roasts and apologies have not been enough to earn your favor—let the overwhelming strength of his new music convince you. Bieber’s output so far this year has been impossible to dislike. First there was the Skrillex-and-Diplo-produced “Where Are Ü Now,” an angelic pop anthem that made perfect use of Bieber’s cherubic voice. And now there’s “What Do You Mean?” the first single from his upcoming comeback. The full album is sure to win back your heart, tears and all at the VMAs.

Tinashe, Joyride (November)

Tinashe’s Aquarius was one of the strongest debuts of last year, instantly minting her as a powerful new voice in R&B and pop. And yet, she hasn’t achieved the level of megastardom commensurate with the quality of her work. Joyride could change that. Though she has not released any songs yet, she has confirmed contributions from some of the biggest names in production, including Max Martin (he of “. . . Baby One More Time” and, more recently, “Can’t Feel My Face”), Dr. Luke, Hit-Boy, and Boi-1da. “I can’t be ignored,” she says in the album’s trailer, below. Nor should she be.

The Will They or Won’t Theys:
Frank Ocean, Rihanna, Kanye West, Adele

Being a music fan in a post-Beyoncé world is to be in a constant state of high alert. The biggest stars guard release dates as though they were gold codes, then drop music at the most unexpected of times. (Just last week, Miley Cyrus unleashed her new album in one swoop at the end of the VMAs.) So what do we know about the highly anticipated album releases of Frank Ocean, Rihanna, Kanye West, and Adele? Very little, except that they’ve been teased for what feels like centuries. All four are supposed to come out before 2015 is over, but don’t hold your breath—and keep an eye on Twitter.

John Oliver’s Guide To Everything Students Need To Know

In many parts of the country, the conclusion of Labor Day weekend marks the start of the school year, and while “Last Week Tonight” was off for the holiday, host John Oliver recorded a video that has everything students really need to know

Sort of.

In the four-minute YouTube clip, Oliver shares a bit of wisdom for each of the major subjects taught in school (and he tries to do it without swearing… but doesn’t quite succeed).

For American history: “Google ‘Warren G. Harding penis named Jerry’ right now,” Oliver advises, referring to the 29th president. “And you will not be disappointed.”

Oliver also touches on world history, especially the European explorers and colonists.

“Now, as adults, you will realize that these men were basically genocidal lunatics,” he says. “But for now, enjoy thinking of them as thrilling adventurers and discoverers.”

Oliver manages to get around to math, biology, chemistry and English as well — all within those four minutes — and even has a “Guide To Who Dies At The End” for many of the books students will be assigned to read for class.

Check it out in the clip above.

24 Questions Black People Need White People To Answer, Like Right Now

“Do y’all really think Miley is the one who created twerking? Really?”

This is just one of “24 Questions Black People Have For White People,” according to a new video released by Buzzfeed.

Five black people pose questions that open dialogue around white privilege, appropriation and more. Some other necessary questions they ask are: “Why is it that white crime is seen as an isolated incident but black crime is a representation of my entire community,” or “Why do you want to say the N-word so badly” and ”Why is it that white people always act as though they’ve discovered a new trend when people of color have been doing it for virtually years?”

White people often appropriate black culture without giving us credit — from slang words we created to the hairstyles we rock – and we want to know why!

See the rest of the questions in the video above.

10 Reasons Why You Need To Experience Afropunk Fest: Present By The Odd Side

One year ago, we took a trip through New York City to cover Afropunk Fest. The music festival, located at the Barry Commodore Park in Brooklyn, was something very unique compared to the several festivals we have covered. Armed with innovative street style, the love of music and open minds, concert-goers were able to come together and show a completely different side of culture for Blacks in this country. Along with an ever-growing yearly line-up that features superstars that represent it’s culture, the experience itself makes Afropunk a gem in NYC. One year later, the festival is expanding internationally. There was an inaugural festival in Paris as well as another that will happen in Atlanta on October 3rd.

There are several reasons why Afropunk is a one of coolest festivals during the summer, and we’re here to give you some dope reasons why you need to experience this weekend. Here are 10 reasons why you need to experience Afropunk Fest:

1. Afropunk’s yearly lineups are unique to it’s culture

Every year, Afropunk has supplied a lineup featuring artists that help empower the culture. From Danny Brown to Bad Brains, the festival always showcase a diverse group of music artists with similar attributes. There’s only one place you will find D’Angelo, Shabbazz Palaces, and HO9909 all in one place. This year, the lineup is far more stacked, including artists Lauryn Hill, Kaytranada, Kelis, Goldlink, and a hell of a lot more.tumblr_inline_nr4keegpzB1r1sixa_500

2. There’s some really good Hip Hop acts.

They might not be superstars like Rick Ross or Drake, but several rappers that come to Afropunk are great additions to the festival. Don’t think these are your normal rap acts either, you end up hearing diverse sounds and seeing some beautifully insane moments here. Afropunk is the type of place where many have seen hip hop performances ranging from Jean Grae to Das Racist. It is also the type of place where you see moments like this happen:

3.  The DJ’s are sick!

Along with a diverse lineup of artists comes a diverse list of DJs at Afropunk. The Gold Stage is where most of these destructive disk jockeys kill the turntables. From Samba, to Reggae, to Trap music, your ears will explore new terrains and will get you moving along with the other hundreds of people grooving. There’s nothing like a group of people getting more energized throughout one DJ’s set, no matter what genre of music it is. Once you get done with a sick performance, this is the place to be for breaks.

4. There are some legendary acts there

As said before, Afropunk brings in legendary musicians that help fire the culture. Every year there seems to be a incredibly extraordinary artist headlining the festival. Last year it was D’Angelo, the year before it was Chuck D and Questlove, the list goes on. The bigger this fest gets, the more innovative the headliners are. Really! Who would expect Grace Jones and Lenny Kravitz to have performances this year?

5. There’s nothing but love here.

One major thing about this festival is that there are no barriers between festival goers. One of the most important things about Afropunk is that there is no type of hate promote on the grounds. They even have a couple banners to prove it. That means no homophobia, racism, “fatphobia”, you name it. None of that is allowed here, and it keeps the interactions fans positive.  You might just make a couple of friends in a mosh pit made to some band you never heard of.

6. Soulection will make an appearance this year (Lakim x Goldlink)

One of fastest growing music collectives online happens to be Soulection. From Sango to Esta, there’s a long list of artists that have contributed to bring an all new sound to modern music. Although Soulection won’t be as deep as they normally are in NYC, Lakim and Goldlink will be killing different stages for the squad. We’ve already encountered both artists in DC last month, so we already have high expectations for these two performances.

7. Don’t sleep on the rock bands

There might be some dope hip hop artists at this festival, but don’t shy away from the bands that perform there either. They provide some of the most energetic performances at Afropunk. There are some really good acts that come here every year too, like TV on the Radio or Bad Brains. The rock bands are truly one of the factors that make the festival full of life.

8. The street style here is dope

Looking at people’s clothes may not be the amped reason to go to Afropunk, but it definitely is a nice addition to the experience. The urban terrain gives several fans the opportunity to show out during the weekend. You might not find this many people with unique outfits in one place until next year. We anticipate it being even more cooler this year. There have been several publications that have mentioned Afropunk about the diverse street style alone.

9. Afropunk showcases a ton of art.

Along with the music, street style, and DJ’ing, Afropunk also showcases some dope art. Most of it is located at one spot on festival grounds, but you still come across some extremely dope images while you travel from stage to stage.

10. Afropunk tries to take on social issues

Many people may be familiar with Afropunk because of its musical acts, innovative street style from festival goers, and the culture. However, this festival tries to also promote the importance giving festival goers knowledge about modern issues in our society. You’ll find a ton of different booths at Activism Row in the entrance of Barry Commodore Park. Not many festivals attempt to inspire people to actually stay informed about what problems are going on outside of them.

We will be at Afropunk once again this year to cover some the festivities. Keep it locked at AllHipHop for performances, street style, interviews, and much more.

Infographic: What You Need To Know About ‘Female Viagra’

The FDA recently approved the sale of Flibanserin, a pink pill intended for women diagnosed with low sex drive; critics have questioned the pill’s effectiveness, while advocates are praising the move toward supporting both men and women with these sexual issues. Here are some of the most common questions about Flibanserin:

Q: How does Flibanserin work?
A: Women simply take the pill daily for four to eight weeks, feel no increase in happiness or desire, and then discontinue using it.

Q: Is it safe?
A: No. The female libido is a cloven-hoofed beast that must be caged.

Q: Where can I get Flibanserin?
A: From any doctor in possession of clipboards and pens with the Sprout Pharmaceuticals logo.

Q: What are the possible side effects?
A: Trial participants reported feelings of being duped, ripped off, and lied to.

Q: What are some of the proposed brand names?
A: Pink …

The One Thing You Need to Get Over a Painful Breakup

Breakups can be agonizing. You miss your ex, you feel lonely, being single is a significant change, and you’re feeling bitter, angry, and hopeless in relationships. A breakup is a loss and it can be devastating.

I’ve had my share of difficult breakups for sure. When I was inexperienced in heartbreaks, I handled them horribly — indulged in vices, became preoccupied with my ex, and hoped for (a next to impossible) reconciliation. After realizing I was losing a lot of my time to someone who didn’t want anything to do with me, I eventually was able to find the freedom and beauty in moving on. Which led me to the golden rule of healing: Focus on yourself! This is the one thing you need for a healthy recovery.

In love and life, you can’t breakup with yourself, so your best investment of time will always be you. Take all of the attention, time and interest devoted to your ex and bring it back home to you. This can be an emotionally vulnerable time and you must nurture yourself until you are feeling stronger again. (You are likely to end up feeling even stronger than before!)

I like to think of the healing process as cocooning and emerging as a butterfly! Here are some suggestions to get you through:

Improve your health. Taking care of your bod can give you better energy, think clearer, boost mood, relieve stress and many other benefits. Some ways of accomplishing that include getting more sleep, developing your exercise habits, and eating natural foods.

Redecorate your home or bedroom. Make it yours! Out with the old and in with the new. Purging feels great — so do that too! Get familiar with donating items to charity, or selling at pawn shops, eBay, consignment and Craigslist. I have black-or-white rules in the “breakup purge” process and it goes like this:

Items belonging to the ex: donate or sell.
Gifts from the ex: donate or sell.
That sweater you wore on your first date that always reminds you of him/her: donate or sell.

This concept takes the emotion out of the object, and makes space for better things (and relationships) to come your way.

Learn something new to enrich your life. Take a class, begin a new hobby or explore something you’ve always been interested in. When I was diet coaching, my most successful clients kept themselves busy to avoid their fixations. The short-term goal is distraction to take your mind off of things. The benefit of having a constructive distraction is that you are able to cultivate your personal growth in the long term, helping you become stronger, smarter and happier.

Nurture other relationships. Your boyfriend wasn’t the only relationship in your life. Maybe you’re not feeling successful with that particular relationship but think of how many successful relationships you do have or could have. Reap what you sow: develop the positive relationships and you will attract more positive relationships!

Career. I live in New York City and this is pretty much the go-to diversion. When a relationship ends, people tend to find themselves with more time or concentration to develop their careers, find new jobs, change industries, start businesses and more!

Do Women Really Need the Newly Approved “Female Viagra”?

irving penn for vogue

It might surprise you, but for some women, the Ginuwine Pandora station and a quick vape are not enough to get in the mood. Surveys have estimated that about 10 percent of women have something called hypoactive sexual desire disorder. It was with this condition in mind that the Food and Drug Administration yesterday approved Addyi, the first prescription drug to enhance sex drive in women green-lighted by the agency. (Street names: “female Viagra,” “pink Viagra,” “girl boner in a bottle.”)

Created by Sprout Pharmaceuticals, Addyi, known generically as flibanserin, was engineered to treat women whose lack of libido is causing them distress. Sexual pleasure is a critical part of emotional health, the premise seems to be, and if you’re not able to give and receive it, your psychological and physical well-being may be at risk. And given that men have a whole host of available drugs to better their sex lives, it seems about time women got their own magic pill, right?

Interestingly, Addyi is actually the first approved drug to increase libido at all. The drugs aimed at men, Viagra and the like, are intended to help men achieve an erection, not to increase horniness. Also unlike Viagra, Addyi is not a pill one takes an hour before sex to get going, but rather must be taken daily, long term, in order to see results.

The big question is, of course, whether a lack of sexual libido in women is an actual medical condition that needs to be treated. Surely a low sex drive is just as normal and ultimately natural as a high one. (Of course the first sex drug for women is aimed to increase libido. I’m sure many men would like to “fix” this “problem” in their partners.) At the same time, sex is an important component of a healthy relationship, and if you’re not apt to do that, your relationship could suffer tremendously; for these people, the pill may offer hope.

The other big question is whether the drug actually works. Many people are saying it doesn’t, or, at least, that it doesn’t work well enough. Several pharmaceutical giants have reportedly attempted to make and sell such a drug, including Pfizer (which produces Viagra), Bayer, and Procter & Gamble, but they ultimately abandoned their efforts. The FDA previously rejected Addyi itself twice, in 2010 and again in 2013, citing marginal effectiveness and considerable side effects, including nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, and fainting, which can lead to serious injuries.

Following the rejections, campaigns like Even the Score have argued that it’s sexist to have so many drugs for men on the market but none for women. Now that the drug has been approved, critics are saying that the FDA was pressured into green-lighting the drug by a feminist lobby, and that the drug’s negative effects outweigh the potential benefits. Particularly strong opposition is coming from Leonore Tiefer, clinical associate professor of psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine, who told Time: “I am very opposed to the drug and have been since it first went to the FDA in 2010 and it was rejected. Then it was rejected a second time. The drug hasn’t changed, the data hasn’t changed, and my opinion hasn’t changed. I think it’s a disaster. It’s unsafe and it doesn’t work. That is all a drug is supposed to do. Work and be safe.”

In any case, the drug will come with a label warning doctors and patients that combining the pill with alcohol can cause dangerously low blood pressure, and thus fainting. Because the pill must be taken daily, women on the medication would have to be cool with being basically sober. (To whom I would ask: Maybe the reason that you’re never horny is because you’re never drunk?)

The drug will be available starting in October. Which means that, very soon, many women may be making a tough decision: Would you rather be able to drink or be sober and nauseous in exchange for a minimally heightened sex drive?

Having more options for ways to increase desire is a positive thing. But you might try a vibrator before jumping to the meds.

Everything You Need To Know About Moving On After An Affair

Moving on with your life after you’ve been cheated on can feel like an impossible task — especially if your S.O. decides to stay with his or her affair partner.

First, you need to give yourself permission to feel everything: bitterness, sorrow, confusion, rage (in moderation).

But at some point you need to move on and not let the affair define you. Below, experts on the subject of infidelity share their best advice for letting go and starting over after an affair.

1. Stop telling yourself you’ve been wronged.

No, it’s not right that your ex cheated. And if he or she has moved on with the affair partner, it definitely doesn’t seem fair. But if you’re ever going to move on, you need to stop thinking of the affair as an injustice, said Tracy Schorn, the author of Leave a Cheater, Gain a Life: The Chump Lady’s Survival Guide

“Every time you go down the rabbit hole of how unfair it is and compare how happy they are after what they did, ask yourself, ‘OK, so what am I going to do about it? How am I going to move forward anyway?'” she advised. “That’s all you control — you. You don’t control the crappy things other people do. You only control how you’re going to respond. So focus on what you control — your new, cheater-free life.”

2. Accept that the marriage is over.

Once you’ve made the decision to end the marriage or relationship, commit yourself to leaving. That means figuring out the logistics of divorce (Where are you going to stay? Should you retain a lawyer or is mediation your best bet?) and also coming to terms with the finality of your decision, said Caroline Madden, a marriage therapist and the author of Fool Me Once: Should I Take Back My Cheating Husband?

“Stop waiting for your spouse to come through the door,” she said. “Stop arguing about the affair. There is nothing to argue about anymore.

Instead, Madden said to “take an honest inventory of how the marriage wasn’t working for you. If he or she was cheating, your needs probably weren’t being met and you deserve to be with a spouse who doesn’t bail during rough times.”

3. Stop wasting your energy hating the affair partner.

It may feel cathartic to disparage and name-call your ex’s affair partner when you rant to your friends, but at some point, you’ll need to curb your anger, said Madden. Since your ex was the one who made your marriage vows, the lion’s share of the blame should rest on his or her shoulders, she added.

“When you waste your energy thinking about the affair partner, you get sucked into  comparing yourself to him or her and hating yourself,” Madden said. “You may think you are judging her, but you’re actually judging yourself.”

Even if you think you’re fitter, more accomplished and an all-around better person than the other man or woman, drawing comparisons is ultimately a losing proposition, she said.

“In any event, your husband or wife chose the other person over you,” she said. “If you keep thinking about her, you will continue to hurt yourself, more and more.”

4. Don’t let anyone dictate forgiveness.

Forgiveness is the next step to moving on but don’t let anyone rush you, said Schorn.

“Don’t let anyone dictate that timeline or say that you ‘must’ forgive,” she said. “Let go of some superhuman expectation of magnanimity and forgiveness. Just focus on building your new life. You’ll get to the ‘meh’ stage eventually, I promise.”

And if you’re worried that forgiveness is a tall order, it may help to know how Schorn defines the word when it comes to infidelity.

“Forgiveness means your ex doesn’t have the power to hurt you any more,” she said.  ”It takes a long time to get there. In the process, be kind to yourself.”

5. Don’t tell the kids.

You may be completely devastated but if you have kids, that doesn’t give you permission to tell them about mommy or daddy’s new “friend,” said Madden.

“If you tell them, you will involve them in deep adult issues that will threaten their foundation for all relationships,” she said. “It could cause them to worry and wonder if they can ever really trust their future romantic partner.”

She added: “The time to tell the truth will eventually come, but for now, let them have their childhood a little bit longer.”

6. Don’t isolate yourself.

If you can swing it, find a therapist who can help you process the rollercoaster of emotions you’re undoubtedly feeling. If not, reach out to that one friend who always dispenses balanced, nonjudgemental advice, said Samantha Rodman, a psychologist and the author of How to Talk to Your Kids about Your Divorce.

“Don’t go it alone if you don’t have to,” she said. “Even online forums can be helpful to start to realize that you’re not alone.”

7.  Rediscover yourself.

Infidelity can do a number on your self-esteem. When you start to feel really low, remind yourself of how bad ass you were — and still are! — by exploring hobbies and interests you put on the back burner during the marriage, said Rodman.

“Think about what makes you feel confident and most like yourself, whether it’s cooking, taking a dance class or even just spending some time with friends,” she said. “Activities that you left behind in your old relationship can make you feel more ready to move on and enjoy your future.”

8. Don’t let your ex steal your joy.

You know the saying “the best revenge is success”? It’s 100 percent true. Let your elaborate scheme for vengeance fall to the wayside and decide instead to live your life with gusto. Nothing will tick your cheating ex off more, Schorn said.

“People who cheat have a vested interest in rubbing their fabulous, new, sparkly life in your face —  it has to be fabulous to justify the trail of broken hearts and broken homes,” she explained. “Ignore. Block. You’re still you. Cheaters might try and take your children, your pension, and your wedding china — but they can’t have your soul. You captain that.”

Dr. Phil – The Huffington Post

Why I No Longer Need to Be a ‘Beautiful Boy’

There is a nuanced and etching sadness the moment you realize that you’re not what others would consider conventionally attractive. I realized my body was shaped differently than other boys one summer afternoon in the aisles of a TJ Maxx with my mother.

As she swept through the aisles pulling down discounted bottles of designer anti-frizz shampoo and glancing at overstocked heels she could never wear, I asked her if I would be able to go look at some underwear for myself. Navigating through racks of faux fur coats and jumpers, I pushed past a family of four huddled around a sale rack of tank tops to the men’s underwear section. As soon as I reached for a four pack of Hanes — white, briefs — my hand began to shake and my heart threatened to burst out of my chest. I held my hand in the air for a few seconds, wondering if I were having a stroke when it began to occur to me that my eyes were laser-locked on the package the underwear model on my Hanes container was sporting.

Immediately I began to pace the underwear section, making sure to carefully pause at equal interims to stare at the sock section just to the left. In my mind, anyone passing would have just thought I was a very confused shopper, when in actuality it looked like I was cruising.

Eventually I steadied myself and walked directly in front of the underwear wall. There they were. All of my first boyfriends in a row. Each with perfectly coiffed hair, dimples that I wanted to kiss goodnight and abs I wanted to grate fresh mozzarel off of.

I scanned the rows and rows of underwear models and found the most beautiful one: a man with olive tan skin, dirty brown hair, and green eyes that challenged me to touch him. Holding him in my hand, I felt my athletic shorts rise and stiffen — I had to use the underwear pouch to hide myself as I stumbled back to my mother. I found her in the perfume aisle whispering softly to herself, “…if only I had somewhere to wear this.” Keeping the underwear glued to me long enough for my hard-on to go down and for her to usher me to the front of the store, I felt elated when the cashier placed them in a bag for us. My beautiful man was coming home with me.

Although my fascination with underwear models continued, I didn’t really understand there was a difference between me and them. It wasn’t until I discovered porn that I began to know that there are binaries that exist in the world; that there are “gorgeous” people who have been photoshopped and lit into resembling plastic ethereal creatures, that there are plain people and more importantly, that I definitely fell into the latter category.

After the thunderous sounds of my father’s snores would reach my ears upstairs, I would boot up my PlayStation portable and log onto Sean Cody. Thumping my elbow against the wall as I went at myself I was transfixed by how sculpted their bodies where. The way their hulking shoulders lifted each other up and how their bodies twisted and smash into each other in such a visceral way excited and confused me.

After I would finish I would walk to my mirror and stare at it for 30 minutes or so. If I turned my body to the right and sucked in my stomach until my face purpled, I almost looked like I could have abs hidden underneath years of baby fat and homemade carrot cake. If I dropped my voice to a gruff growl I could almost mimic their moans as they fucked on screen.

I was never considered a particularly attractive boy by anyone who had met me. Inheriting my mother’s thick hair it constantly appeared like I had a growth protruding from my scalp every time my hair grew past three inches. It was woolly and full and when my mother would cut it every two weeks she’d leave it in the garden for birds to build sturdy nests from.

The first time I kissed a girl she ran her fingers through it and a rough knot snagged her ring in what she would later tell her friends was my “dog fur.” I never knew when to stop eating chinese, or pizza, or icecream, or second dinner and it never occurred to me that eating two bagels for breakfast wasn’t the best idea.

I was born chubbie and it wasn’t until my growth spurt that I even began to consider how being thin meant people would treat you differently. The same summer I grew eight inches my grandmother took me out shopping for an entirely new set of clothes. “A strapping man like yourself needs pants that fit you,” she told me as she ran her credit card at the Macy’s check-out line.

High school was a particularly unique challenge for me because although I had grown in height, my face remained frozen in the past. I look back at my senior year photo and I see a boy with sea-foam green braces (at the time I thought they would look cool, in actuality they looked like I had shoveled spinach into my mouth right before the photo was taken), hair slicked back so it looks wet and the concealer I had begged my mother to put on me that did little to hide the acne that had colonized on my face.

When we’re young we rarely see ourselves clearly in the way we do as adults. We feel, at the time, that our faces are final and that we will never be as beautiful as we are in that moment. I would return home from college for the first time seven months after my senior year photo was taken as what many would consider “a new man.”

Sometimes seven months can feel overnight, and my transformation felt like it had happened while I was having night terrors. My braces came off, my face thinned out and my acne decided to stop being a complete dick-wad. A week into college my roommate advised me that only middle-schoolers and poor people used LA Looks, and I promptly poured my bottle of level 7 hold gel down the drain.

I felt like one of those children who were never able to drink in high school, so during college they become alcoholics. Except instead of just drinking I was after a different type of buzz. One that can only come from another person paying attention to you; a buzz that comes when someone feels a carnal urge just from looking at you and you alone.

The first time I began to wield my looks was when I flirted with a bartender and he gave me three free shots. He was around 5’4″ and looked like a fat Justin Timberlake. He said if he gave me the shots I would have to kiss him. I did and ended up getting so drunk I passed out in the back of my friend’s car on the drive home.

I started getting free entry to clubs, free dinners and free gifts from the men who seemed to like whatever I was exuding. Eventually it wasn’t enough for these men to just want me, I needed them to have me. The first time I slept with a stranger in college he fumbled to take off my shirt and his breathe smelled like Jack Daniel’s.

While he scratched and grabbed at my back he called out “Tyler!” like he had loved me for years. We lay there in the dark for a few minutes after, the hum of my fan saving either of us from having to make conversation. I never asked him who Tyler was or his own name. I just liked the way he said Tyler like it was the only name he ever wanted to say again. Maybe Tyler had abs. Maybe he was a handsome man. For a night being him didn’t seem so bad.

I began to notice that the men I was attracting had a certain appetite for youth. They ranged in age and build but one thing would remain the same: their fascination with my beauty. In their eyes, I was never handsome, or hot, or studly. I was pretty, beautiful, gorgeous.

At first these words showered over me and bathed me in a warmth I had never known rubbing my fat rolls together in the mirror as a child. But like all things that fill up empty voids inside of you, they began to trickle out of me faster than I could keep the well of compliments filled up.

There is a difference in being a beautiful boy and a handsome man. I discovered this when men would tell me as they dressed that they liked being with me; that sleeping with me felt like sleeping with a woman. I began to rub my stomach again in the mirror at night and pull at the cheeks on my face willing them to become more hollow and chiseled. Being told I was a beautiful boy was like suddenly becoming a famous child star, but knowing that your moment in the spotlight was fading fast.

There is nothing left for me anymore in the touch of a stranger and there is nothing left in the words that I used to desperately crave to hear. Now when people tell me I’m pretty it feels like a stab to the man I want to be. There is no difference in affection when it comes to being called gorgeous or being called handsome; and it has taken me a few years to understand why these seemingly interchangeable words have bothered me so much.

When I was a boy all I wanted was to catch someone’s eye; to be the underwear model that some confused person lusts over. I wanted to be a shiny thing that was revered, polished, put up on a pedestal. But as soon as I got it I realized that there is nothing left in seeing yourself in a mirror and only wondering what others are looking at. I keep waiting for this knowledge to catch up to my actions. I keep waiting to stop waiting for compliments that will eventually stop coming.

There is a picture my parents keep above their fireplace of a four-year-old me standing, fully-clothed, in the toilet. My mother loves to tell the story of her son sneaking off every 20 minutes or so to climb into the toilet and flush himself down. Depending on when she tells the story, she had to change his clothes four times, sometimes seven. His hair is blonde and his cheeks look perpetually filled with helium, ballooning them in a cartoon way. He is four and he hasn’t heard of abs, or burgers, or how hollow a grab of his ass can feel. I look at this boy: wet, happy, and smiling, but I don’t recognize him anymore.

Want To Have Better Orgasms? Here’s What You Need To Know

Imagine being sexually active for your entire adult life and never having an orgasm.

For Loly, a woman in her mid-twenties living in France, that scenario was a reality. Even though she was healthy, sex-positive and actively looking for ways to achieve orgasm, she didn’t find a way to do it until she came across an exercise that changed her life forever.

Of course Loly isn’t the only person — female or male — who has trouble with orgasming. Even though almost all of us are physically capable of having them, that doesn’t mean we are having them. And for those of us who can orgasm, all too often they can still be hard to come by, show up too soon or take forever to achieve.

So, for the latest HuffPost Love+Sex Podcast, host Noah Michelson (helming the show by himself this week due to co-host Carina Kolodny being out of the studio) went in search of tips, tricks and — ultimately — the truth about how everyone can achieve orgasms. And not just any orgasm but the very best orgasms possible.

To help him in his quest, Michelson chatted with Jenny Block, author of the recently published book O Wow! Discovering Your Ultimate Orgasm, and Ian Kerner, sex therapist and author of She Comes First: The Thinking Man’s Guide To Pleasuring A Woman:

7 Products for a Post-Workout Makeover: Here’s What You Need in Your Gym Bag

nicolas kern vogue april 2014

It’s a common dilemma: You may have found a favorite high-intensity exercise class, but do you have a good post-cooldown routine for freshening up all worked out? Stepping onto the city streets with wet baby curls and purple-tinged cheeks defies logic when you’ve spent the past hour or so pushing yourself to the limits with the aim of feeling good on the inside and outside.

Fortunately, a gym bag packed with the right essentials can make all the difference. If time is limited, Ursa Major Essential Face Wipes will solve the shower dilemma and buy you some time between the end of class and the route home. These neatly packaged bamboo cloths refresh and exfoliate while removing sweat and excess oil, without stripping skin—genius. Slathering on Shiseido’s Urban Environment sunscreen, meanwhile, restores that essential sun barrier and doubles as a creamy moisturizer, while Klorane’s cult Dry Shampoo renders washing hair, for a while at least, pretty much redundant.

For those who wouldn’t dare entertain such a thought, Yves Durif’s wide-tooth detangling comb deserves bag space: It’s the perfect way to scrape wet hair into a slick, shower-fresh knot. As do Josie Maran’s multitasking color stick and Tweezerman’s arguably life-changing lash curler. The final touch? Pinrose’s collection of slim, single-dose travel fragrances, tagged with kooky and uplifting names like Campfire Rebel and Garden Gangster. Now who wouldn’t feel empowered for the remainder of the evening after a couple of dabs of that?

Divorced Women Need Casseroles Too!

Early in the marriage separation process, a dear friend tried to shore up my flagging courage. “I know this is going to sound awful,” she began. “But what if “R” (my husband) were dead? You’d have to somehow survive and carry on.”

I thought about her remark for a long time. Then I had an epiphany: My husband — of nearly 30 years — is dead, even though “R” is still alive. I felt like a widow, but because my situation didn’t fit the standard definition, I was left to mourn on my own, without the traditional support given to a woman who has lost her husband. I responded to my friend: “My husband is dead. Here’s the difference: Nobody’s bringing me casseroles.”

I realized that I had been left to deal with all of the grief, loneliness and despair of widowhood, but without the outpouring of sympathy and support that people would naturally provide to an actual widow.

In our culture, casseroles are a symbol for the expression of comfort from others. When a woman becomes widowed, everyone in the community instinctively comes to her aid, bringing casseroles and other food, offering to help with household chores, childcare, etc. However, when a woman’s husband leaves her (but not the planet), she is often also abandoned by the people around her — including some of her closest friends. Some may view her situation as threatening, worrying that if this couple’s long, apparently happy marriage broke up, the same thing could happen to them. Other friends want to reach out, but aren’t sure how to proceed. They don’t know what to say, or they may assume the woman doesn’t want to talk about her situation. So they keep their distance and remain silent. Some acquaintances are merely “couples” friends. They enjoyed going out with the husband and wife, but they wouldn’t think of socializing with a single woman. Also, people are busy. They have their own relationships, jobs, kids and challenges.

There are so many reasons (plausible and otherwise) why people keep their distance and withhold support from someone experiencing a breakup. If only they would realize how much a simple casserole — real or metaphorical — would mean to a grieving, frightened, newly-single woman.

Don’t let it happen to you. If you’re a separated or divorced woman experiencing “nobody’s bringing me casseroles” syndrome, here are three ways you can make it easier for others to provide the support, advice and socialization you need (and which they would provide if they only realized how much you need it):

  1. Don’t project a false image. When my husband and I first separated, I made a point of regularly posting pictures of myself on social media showing how fabulous my newly single life was. Because I write about the theatre, I see a lot of Broadway shows and concerts, so I showed myself with various celebrities in exciting New York City settings. This was an attempt to show the world (and my ex, who is still my Facebook friend) that I was doing just fine on my own, thank you very much. However, the real story was that I wasn’t doing very well. I was devastated, depressed, scared and lonely. But because my online hype was so convincing, people didn’t reach out to me. They figured my life was swell and that I didn’t need anything from them. (I’m not recommending that you use social media to rant against your ex or to overshare depressing details of your life. But keep in mind that if you paint too rosy a picture, people will assume you’re living the high life and that you’re not in need of their friendship).
  2. Reach out. Because I was so intent on projecting a positive public image (see #1), I often felt isolated and lonely. I knew I had to take action to turn things around, so I did something rather drastic. I sent an email to 16 women friends. The subject line was “A Favor.” I explained that my social media image was basically an act, and that it didn’t reflect my real-life situation. I told them that I would continue to reach out to them, but that it would mean a lot to me if they would also occasionally include me in their plans — maybe ask me over for a coffee or a glass of wine or invite me to a social gathering. I promised them I would be a charming guest and that I wouldn’t mind if I were the only single person there. The response was incredible. A few friends praised my “bravery” in reaching out. One woman invited me to her Zumba class. Two other friends took me out for drinks. A married couple happily asked me join them for dinner (and then generously picked up the tab). I always tell my son, “If you don’t ask, you don’t get.” Thankfully, for once, I took my own advice.
  3. Get out. Have you heard of “Meetups?” It’s the world’s largest network of social groups. There are over 200,000 Meetups, based on topics from the obscure (Sag Harbor Music & Motorcycle T-shirt Quilt Meetup) to cultural (Marc Chagall Art Lovers) to recovery (Sober Singles over 40). These local groups provide an opportunity to meet new people, indulge a favorite hobby, or acquire a new one. I went to a “Badass Board Game” Meetup event in New York City, and although I was the only non-Millennial in the group, my young partner and I won the grand prize, defeating a team of self-professed “Jenga Ninjas.” I met some terrific young people and had a blast.

Also consider: Take a class (foreign language, yoga, personal finance, etc.). Volunteer. (This provides a triple pay-off: it’s a great way to help others, to meet nice, caring people, and it will help you forget your own troubles). In addition, check out your local library for free educational programs.

Most importantly: Make sure you, in turn, reach out to help others in need. Remember: sometimes everyone needs a casserole, whether real or metaphorical.

25 Things That We Need to Bring Back From the 1990s

The 1990s were a simpler time. Shoulder pads were still socially acceptable, millennials did not yet know that they could make zero dollars an hour writing articles on the internet telling the world how great they are and Sally Jesse Raphael still graced our television screens every afternoon. Yes, it was a wonderful time and I am happy to report that it seems as though everything old is new once again. With Space Jam getting a much deserved sequel, reboots of Full House and The X Files in the works and The Limited Too set to reopen its doors next year, and god willing a Clinton in the White House again next year, the 1990s are making a serious comeback. So while we are reliving the vida loca, here are a few other things that Americas should welcome back from the greatest decade to make this world a better place to live in. As if!

1. Slap Bracelets — Kids these days are too soft. It’s time for this cool accessory that also doubles as a weapon to make a return. As far as I am concerned, there is no better fashion statement to make on the playground than cheaply made zebra patterned piece of fabric that also doubles as switchblade.

2. Lip Smackers — Why wouldn’t you want to walk around with you mouth tasting of Dr. Pepper, kettle corn or salted pretzel (yes, that is a real flavor) all day? And nothing says “I love you,” quite like rolling up to your girlfriends house, laying one on her and smelling of cherry cream soda for the remainder of the day.

3. Passing Notes — Kids these days swap text messages in between classes to communicate, but what to do when you need to destroy evidence from parents? Come on guys — notes written on papers are so much easier to destroy than iPhones. And less expensive.

4. Family Matters — Yes, we are all excited that The Tanners are coming back into our lives next years, but can’t we throw the Winslow’s a bone? I would love to know what Carl and the gang are up to these days and if they ever found their youngest daughter who mysteriously disappeared without a trace.

5. Spice Girls — This needs no explanation.

6. Beanie Babies — I personally would like to bring these back because after years of collecting and hoarding them and thinking they were going to appreciate in value, it turns out they aren’t worth shit.

7. Lisa Frank — The unsung hero of gay pride. Everything was a rainbow with this woman — unicorns, dolphins, princesses, kitty cats. Time to make your way back to the forefront, girl. The world could use a few more rainbow hummingbird lunch boxes is in it.

8. The Macarena — The Bar Mitzvah circuit has not been the same since this song went out of style. Because nothing says: “Mazol Tov Jordan Abromowitz” quite like watching your over weight middle aged aunt who’s in a dress two sizes too small trying to navigate her way through the world’s least complicated dance moves.

9. Frosted Tips — You know what I’m talking about, all of the members of N*SYNC. I loved my frosted tips and (not-so-secretly) wish they’d be in style again in places outside of Alabama. They were like a yellow ray of hope in an otherwise dishwater brown mess of a mane.

10. Dunk-a-roos — What a messed up world we live in where a kid can’t go to school, eat his or her lunch and top it off with a delicious snack that consists of a cookie that you dip in icing. What is this? Communist Russia?

11. Jonathan Taylor Thomas — my beloved, where have you gone? Was the local chapter of the fan club I started for you not enough? Come back to us. We will embrace you as we did before and make you an even bigger, brighter star.

12. Pogs — Kids these days are so lucky that they have so many options when it comes to play time. I say, bring the circular, cardboard cut-out dishes that cost a shocking amount of money back to toy stores. They teach you things like … how to count? I don’t actually know what they were for but I loved them and would gladly welcome them back into my house (psyche-out, I still have all of mine from middle school!)

13. The Mickey Mouse Club — While Disney still churns out the stars as quickly as one of the Kardashian girls has a pregnancy scare, nothing will top the 1990s revival of The Mickey Mouse Club that brought Britney Spears, Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake and many others into the world. But NOT Jessica Simpson. You lose Jessica Simpson.

14. Mall Madness — a game that it supposed to teach you how devastating credit card debt can be which was a lesson that clearly didn’t resonate with me or my gambling addiction.

15. The Babysitter’s Club — Ann M. Martin, where art thou? This series of books taught every young girl (and closeted gay kid) the value of opening a small business, the trials of tribulations of having a friend with diabetes, how to gloss over your friend (Claudia — I’m looking at you) being a slut but being able to see the best in her and how to include your frumpy and kind of ugly friend (Mallory) without making her feel left out. These a lessons every 2015 child needs too, damn it!

16. Taylor Dayne — It’s my opinion that global warming with reverse its course, ISIS will throw down their weapons and Greece’s economy will bounce back if the world was given one more Diane Warren penned power ballad that included a sexy saxophone solo sung by Taylor Dayne.

17. Carmen San Diego — How in the hell are children supposed to know where things are these days? By reading? Please! I would have no idea where Tierra del Fuego was if it weren’t for this fedora wearing, trench coat loving renegade.

18. Tetris — I wouldn’t know how to move furniture into a truck without this game and no one who as ever helped me move who is under the age of twenty-five knows how to either which is reason enough to bring this gem back.

19. Gushers — When I was a fat kid growing up, Gushers were the only “fruit” I consumed. They were not only delicious, but because they tasted like strawberries, grapes and kiwis, they were nutritious too!

20. The Oregon Trail — not sure what this computer game was supposed to teach you, but had I not played it as a child, I would have never known what dysentery was or that I could die from it at any moment and without warning.

21. Ricky Martin’s Career — Those two magical years we spent together were years I will never forget, Ricky. We thought you were in it for the long haul after you ushered Latin pop music into America. Now we’re just somehow stuck with Pitbull.

22. MTV — It’s called “Music Television” not “Shows About Unwed Mothers Having Babies Television.” Remember waiting all day by the television to see the “Oops… I Did It Again” music video on TRL and then taping it on a VHS and playing it over and over again so that you could learn the dance moves and be just like Britney? Well, I do.

23. Models, Inc.90210 got a revival. Melrose Place got a revival. When’s it going to be Models, Inc‘s turn? Nothing is more entertaining than a bunch of models and their super hot photographer boyfriends sleeping around and occasionally shooting each other for no reason. I know, the cheese stands alone on this one, but at the rate the entertainment industry is going we are bound for a Models Inc. 2.0 eventually.

24. Slang — “Talk to the hand cause the face a’int listening” could very well make its way into present day vernacular, with a few tweaks of course. “Talk to the hand bae, cause your basic face a’int on fleek.” Or something to that affect. Meanwhile, I still says things are “da bomb” likes it’s 1996.

And finally #25 — someone needs to find a way to bring Jonathan Brandis back from the dead IMMEDIATELY! #seaQUEST4LIFE.

Here’s What All Women In Sexless Marriages Need To Know

Stuck in a sexless marriage? You’re not alone. According to data scientist Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, the top-searched marriage complaint on Google is “sexless marriage.” (What’s more, searches for “sexless marriage” are three and a half times more common than “unhappy marriage” and eight times more common than “loveless marriage.”)

Many of those searching for answers are women struggling to understand why their spouses aren’t reciprocating their desire for sex. We reached out to marriage therapists and sex experts to share the advice they give women stuck in sexually unsatisfying marriages. Read what they had to say below.

“Many women are the ones with a higher sex drive in their marriages but women commonly don’t discuss this dynamic openly with friends. Also, the media portrayal of relationships makes women think that males have a constant high level of sexual desire. On the contrary, many women struggle in sexless marriages. Outside of therapy, I’d say that finding a support system can be invaluable. There are forums online where women share their experiences, such as the Dead Bedrooms forum on Reddit.” — Samantha Rodman, psychologist and couples’ counselor

“It may not be you, so stop beating yourself up. It is no indicator of how sexy you are as a woman if he is initiating or not. Many times men stop initiating sex because they are stressed or they are experiencing some kind of erectile dysfunction and they’re too afraid to tell you. Men define their sexuality by their ability to perform and if they cannot achieve an erection upon demand they may withdraw. Keep being affectionate and let him know there is no pressure to get to the ‘finish line.’ Let him know you still want to cuddle and be close and then if you still want a ‘happy ending,’ well, frankly, you can take care of it yourself. If he wants to participate, he might find himself more turned on than he thought himself capable. Don’t wait for him to take charge. It is OK as the woman to be the driving force of your sex life.” – Tammy Nelson, certified sexologist and sex therapist and the author of Getting the Sex You Want

“Our libido often dips with age and in tandem with life stressors — juggling multiple jobs, kids, family, home and self care. That said, if several months have passed with no sex and it’s troubling you, the matter needs to be addressed. Sometimes, all you need to do is communicate. But there may be physical, psychological or marital issues that require work. If it turns out there is a physical issue — your over-40 husband is having trouble maintaining erections, for instance — a trip to the doctor can do wonders. But if the issue is decreased physical attraction, know that it usually has less to do with appearance and more to do with unexpressed and unresolved unhappiness in the relationship or marriage. If this is the case, you’re in the right place: couples’ counseling.” – Robert Weiss, LCSW, senior vice president of clinical development at Elements Behavioral Health

“If he has erectile dysfunction or the inability to get or maintain an erection, he may have prostate issues and it is important to get that checked out right away. Have him schedule an appointment with a urologist. Rule out any health problems before you begin talking about what could be happening emotionally. When you have ruled out cancer, his testosterone levels have been checked, and you have had discussions around his stress levels, then you can look deeper into your relationship.” — Tammy Nelson

“If your spouse is not willing to see a sex or relationship therapist (alone or with you), it’s very telling. I recommend going to professional in almost all cases if either partner is still emotionally committed to their sexless marriage. But if your partner really doesn’t give a damn about you or the marriage and the two of you are just co-existing, then you really need to think about what you want the rest of your life to be like.”  – Pepper Schwartz, certified sexologist and the author of Prime: Adventures and Advice on Sex, Love, and the Sensual Years

“The good news is that for most otherwise healthy (emotionally intimate) couples who are both willing to put in work, it’s relatively easy to spark a new fire. To start, a little romance never hurts. And yes, I am talking about toys, new positions, new places and unexpected romance within your relationship. Be intimate, share quiet moments where you simply look at each other, hold hands and talk about your feelings. Nothing, not even sex, is more intimate than having a compassionate partner who has your back. As for the sex itself, try mixing it up. Tell your spouse about your secret sexual fantasy, and ask if he or she is willing to try it. And then ask about your partner’s secret fantasy and offer to indulge it.” –  Robert Weiss

Why Silicon Valley’s Paid Leave Policies Need to Go Viral

paternity leave

On Tuesday, Netflix announced it would start offering unlimited maternity and paternity leave for its employees. Both biological and adoptive parents now have the option of taking up to a paid year off after having a child, with the option of coming back part-time, if they wish to do so.

Netflix chief talent officer Tawni Cranz explained the thought process behind the company’s decision on its blog: “We want employees to have the flexibility and confidence to balance the needs of their growing families without worrying about work or finances,” she wrote. “Experience shows people perform better at work when they’re not worrying about home.” The streaming giant was already known for providing generous work benefits, such as unlimited vacation time, but its unlimited parental paid leave policy is downright groundbreaking.

As of now, the U.S. is still the only developed country that does not legally mandate new parents get any paid time off; federal law only requires employees be able to take up to twelve weeks unpaid. And while many employers do offer some form of paid leave, tech corporations, like Netflix, are currently providing the greatest amount of salaried time off to new parents.

In the past few years, Silicon Valley has been leading the charge in creating progressive family policies and has become known for offering unique perks to better manage the work-life balance. Facebook, for example, provides $ 4,000 in “baby cash” to new parents. Microsoft announced this week it’s letting expecting moms leave the office two weeks before they’re due. Meanwhile, IBM just announced it will provide breastfeeding moms the option to express-ship pumped milk back home while they’re traveling for work.

The tech sector is even more forward-thinking when it comes to paid paternity time off. Twitter offers new dads ten weeks off, while Google, Pinterest, and Kickstarter give up to twelve. The most generous companies are Facebook, Instagram, and Reddit, which all offer up to seventeen weeks off to both men and women who have a new baby. Yahoo and Apple offer lower amounts of time: eight and six weeks, respectively. But that’s still way more than the national average. A study conducted by Boston College’s Center for Work and Family found that 76 percent of fathers went back to work after one week or less and 96 percent after two weeks or less.

But are tech dads really taking all—or any—of that time off? Yahoo senior director of product management Fernando Delgado previously worked at Google when both of his daughters were born. At the time, Google granted new fathers seven weeks off. “When each of them was born, I took off two weeks immediately,” he said. “Then after that, I would take a week off every four weeks or so, until I used up all of my paternity leave.” During his time at home, he helped his wife adjust to their new life with a baby, and aside from checking emails occasionally, he admits he disconnected from work quite easily.

Paternity leave not only provides new dads with valuable bonding time with their children, but it also relieves some of the pressure placed on women to put their careers on hold in order to care for a newborn baby. While many men in the workforce are still affected by the stigma of paternity leave, according to Delgado, it’s not a problem in Silicon Valley. “The majority of my friends who work in tech and had kids took all of their paternity leave time off,” he explained. “Most of them did the same thing I did—[they took] two weeks and then continued taking time throughout that first year.”

One of the strongest arguments against passing federal paid parental leave is that it might end up hurting business owners, but with huge new IPOs regularly announced and Google’s stock price climbing yearly, perhaps it’s time to reconsider. In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Susan Wojcicki, the CEO of YouTube, which is owned by Google, said business and employee satisfaction improved after Google increased paid maternity leave from twelve weeks to eighteen, and paid paternity leave from seven to twelve weeks. The turnover rates for new moms also dropped by 50 percent.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that he and his wife Priscilla Chan are expecting a child later this year. It’ll be interesting to see how much time he’ll take off out of the seventeen weeks that Facebook grants. If he does decide to take a considerable amount of leave, perhaps it’ll serve as an aspirational example for working dads around the country.

Why You And Your Partner Need To Negotiate Sex

How important is sex in a marriage? So important, according to Dr. Phil, that it should actually be a topic that’s on the table and actively negotiated between two partners.

“When you define sex, you have to think about it much more broadly than most people do. It involves all forms of physical contact; it involves the emotional aspects and elements,” Dr. Phil says in the video above. In other words, the emotional and physical aspects of a relationship are intertwined, and there will inevitably be pain if your needs are not being met. He concludes, “It’s not something to be shy and bashful about. It’s something that you should talk about openly and candidly. It is what sets that relationship apart from all others. It is important that you discuss this rather than just build resentment or feel neglected.”

Here’s All You Need to Know About the Candidates in Thursday’s GOP Debate

Ten of the Republican Party candidates for president will participate in the first debate of the 2016 Presidential Campaign on Thursday in Cleveland, Ohio.

Fox News, the official network of the GOP, has announced the names of nine of the candidates in the debate. The tenth will either be Ohio Gov. John Kasich or former Texas Gov. Rick Perry. What is it going to be, Fox, beets or liverwurst?

The GOP’s remaining candidates will sit on folding chairs at the back of the auditorium, with forlorn looks on their faces, wondering why they’re not one of the popular kids.

And we’re left to wonder: Why is there a debate in August 2015 for an election that’s 15 months way?

With so many candidates, where can you find the distinctive qualities of each one in a way that gives them the seriousness they deserve?

Right here:

Donald Trump said he would tab Sarah Palin for a top cabinet post if he was elected president. In response, Trump’s candidacy was immediately endorsed by the nation’s comedians, comedy writers, and editorial cartoonists.

Ben Carson said he doesn’t “really want to run” for president. We really don’t want you to run for president either.

Rand Paul said he supported his family’s opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act because it meant — and this was his quote — people couldn’t “have cigar bars anymore.” He really said that.

Rick Perry called the murders of nine blacks inside a Charleston, S.C., church an “accident.” This was a massacre. Perry is an accident.

Mike Huckabee does not accept evolution as a science. This is not surprising for someone who has spent so many years in GOP politics.

Mike Huckabee says that rapes, though “horrible tragedies,” have produced admirable human beings. He calls this “compassionate conservatism.”

Chris Christie puts the bully in bully pulpit.

Ted Cruz was not born in the United States. How can he run for president? Has anyone seen his birth certificate? What’s he hiding? He must be Kenyan and a Muslim. And a Socialist. And maybe even a Kardashian.

Marco Rubio gave up a promising career as a ventriloquist after learning while making a nationally televised speech that he could not talk and drink water at the same time.

Donald Trump says that global warming is real, but that it’s untouched by human hands. Like his hair.

As governor of Florida, Jeb Bush reportedly invested $ 1 million in state pension money to fund pornography films. Bush defended himself by saying he wanted to see people do to each other what his family has been doing to the American people for generations.

Rick Perry started wearing glasses to look smart. It hasn’t worked. He just looks like Rick Perry wearing glasses.

Jeb Bush told Fox News that, given the information he now has, he would have supported the invasion of Iraq. This means that George W. isn’t the dumbest Bush, and Rick Perry isn’t the dumbest person running for president.

Scott Walker is the only college dropout among the GOP candidates for president. Rick Perry and Mike Huckabee all graduated from college. How hard can it be?

John Kasich and Scott Walker hope to get elected president by attacking teachers. Why not? It worked so well in China, Iran, and Afghanistan.
