‘First Man’ soars as tale of Neil Armstrong and stoic heroism

If stoic heroism sounds pretty good right about now, “First Man” lands at a welcome time. The “La La Land” reunion of Ryan Gosling and director Damien Chazelle produces a soaring, IMAX-worthy look at Neil Armstrong’s life in the decade leading up to the moon landing, providing a reminder that fulfilling John F. Kennedy’s vision was as much about grit, guts and determination as any feat of engineering.

Genre: Documentary

Price: $ 12.99

Rental Price: $ 4.99

Release Date: September 29, 2017

Legendary comedian Gilbert Gottfried has had quite the career. Rocketing to fame in the 1980's, he was thrust into public consciousness thanks to his brash personality and off-kilter comic timing. Now, foul-mouthed and unapologetic after decades of flying solo in both his work and in his personal life, Gilbert has shockingly reinvented himself…as a family man. Director Neil Berkeley’s "Gilbert" reveals an unexpected side to the iconic comedian. The film peeks behind the larger-than-life persona at a more personal story about growing up in Brooklyn and becoming a husband and father late in life. Gottfried’s ability to bring humor to even the darkest situations has, at times, gotten him into trouble. Still he soldiers on, an expert craftsman at bringing his audience to the edge (and sometimes pushing them over). Gilbert strips the comedic character away to reveal the man behind it. Berkeley allows the audience an intimate — even vulnerable — view of Gottfried out of character.

Neil deGrasse Tyson Changed Bill Maher’s Mind About Water On Mars

Bill Maher was not into the big Mars news when it came out. Then Neil deGrasse Tyson came along.

On Friday’s “Real Time,” Maher explained deGrasse Tyson actually convinced him that the discovery of water on Mars was extremely important.

“I’m admitting, you know, I changed my mind,” Maher said before deGrasse Tyson went into his “spiel” about how many important discoveries like atoms and electricity were also written off at first and how life on Earth could’ve possibly been “seeded” from Mars.

More importantly, the scientist also says there is ice at the poles of Mars, prompting Maher to ask the most vital question, “So they might have room service?”

“Possibly,” deGrasse Tyson laughed.

“Real Time with Bill Maher” airs Friday at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.

RISD Taps Neil Gilks as Apparel Design Department Head

Neil Gilks has a new gig as RISD’s apparel design department head.
The British designer first got a glimpse of the students’ know-how, while working as the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s director of educational initiatives and professional development for the past few years. He also served as a guest critic for RISD students’ gearing up for the Providence, R.I. school’s annual runway collection. In that role earlier this year with fellow jury members as Derek Lam, Tina Lutz and others, Gilks doled out his share of precise, yet always humorous criticism to such former seniors as Elizabeth Hilfiger.
Gilks is not a rookie to the world of academia, having spent 13 years at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, where he earned a bachelor’s and two master’s degrees in fashion design, before going on to teach there as well.
Describing RISD as “a great hub of positive energy, which is really refreshing,” Gilks said, “You don’t feel that energy at every school. I’ve always been impressed with the level of design that’s going on here, and I think it can get even better. I’m also excited about the opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration at RISD.”

Neil DeGrasse Tyson Talks Pluto With Stephen Colbert, Explains Why Earth Could Be A Dwarf Planet Too

As humans caught their first glimpse of Pluto’s surface on Tuesday — thanks to New Horizons’ historic flyby – comedian Stephen Colbert sat down with astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson to chat about the “9th rock from the sun.

Pluto was downgraded from a planet to a dwarf planet in 2006, and Tyson has often been credited with playing a central role in its demotion. During the interview, Colbert tried his hardest to get Tyson to change his position in light of the new images.

“It looks like a planet, it’s got atmosphere, it even has a heart – unlike you,” the comedian said.

Tyson refused to budge.

“[Calling Pluto a planet] would insult all the other planets,” Tyson quipped.

However, the director of the Hayden Planetarium did concede that these terms are all relative.

“Jupiter is more bigger compared to Earth than Earth is compared to Pluto,” Tyson told Colbert. “Jupiter is 11 times wider than Earth and Earth is five times wider than Pluto, so if we were Jovians, Earth would be a dwarf planet too.”

Watch the Pluto chat go down in the video above.

Neil Barrett Resort 2016

Neil Barrett offered a new take on traditional bouclé fabric by working it in a black-and-white camouflage pattern — just one element of his cohesive resort collection focused on a strong feminine aesthetic filled with men’s references. “Bouclé is usually very ladylike, so my idea was to make it look more street and cooler,” said the designer. The graphic cloth was cut into a range of easy-to-wear staples, including a biker jacket worn over a fluid, asymmetric dress; a knee-length skirt paired with a loose cotton crewneck sweater, and a linear coat with a round collar.

Playing with geometries, Barrett created movement in some pieces via pleated panels, which appeared on a bonded crepe and duchesse mini dress, as well as on ankle-length pants with a more masculine attitude. The collection also included chic and covetable outerwear hybrid options; one style combined the silhouettes of a peacoat and a cape, while another was a zippered, elongated bomber transformed into a coat.

Neil Young’s New Music Video Mocks Starbucks, Monsanto, and GMOs

Neil Young's New Music Video Mocks Starbucks, Monsanto, and GMOsFolk legend and environmental activist Neil Young has released the first music video from his anti-GMO concept album, The Monsanto Years, with his band Young and Promise of the Real. The song, titled "Rock Star Bucks a Coffee Shop," pokes fun at Starbucks, agrochemical giant Monstanto, and genetically modified organisms. In the video, Young, while singing lyrics like "I want a cup of coffee, but I don't want a GMO.

Neil Young Releases Anti-Starbucks, Anti-GMO Anthem ‘A Rock Star Bucks A Coffee Shop’

Rocker Neil Young has released a new anthem about Starbucks, but don’t expect to hear it at any of the company’s coffee shops.

In the tune “A Rock Star Bucks A Coffee Shop,” Young rips into Starbucks for its alleged support of genetically modified organisms, a.k.a. GMOs.

“I want a cup of coffee but I don’t want a GMO,” Young sings. “I’d like to start my day off without helping Monsanto.”

The tune has Young’s vintage sound, from his trademark distorted electric guitar to his distinctive voice, and the video shows him and the band tossing their coffee cups.

Check it out in the clip above.

The new song will be part of Young’s upcoming concept album, “The Monsanto Years,” which drops on June 30 and features Lukas and Micah Nelson, sons of country music legend Willie Nelson, as well as Lukas’ band, Promise of the Real.

Young and the band performed an acoustic version of the title track at an event in Hawaii over Memorial Day weekend.

The Farm Aid co-founder has accused Starbucks of teaming up with Monsanto to try to derail a first-in-the-nation law in Vermont set to take effect next year that would require the labeling of products with genetically modified ingredients.

“Hiding behind the shadowy ‘Grocery Manufacturers Association,’ Starbucks is supporting a lawsuit that’s aiming to block a landmark law that requires genetically-modified ingredients be labeled,” Young wrote on his website last year. “Amazingly, it claims that the law is an assault on corporations’ right to free speech.”

Starbucks, which is an “affiliate member” of the GMA, has said it does not support the lawsuit and denies participating in it or aligning itself with Monsanto on the issue.

“Starbucks has not taken a position on the issue of GMO labeling,” the company said in a statement released online. “As a company with stores and a product presence in every state, we prefer a national solution.”

NBC’s Fall Schedule Lacks Comedy, But Has A Neil Patrick Harris Variety Show

Brace yourself for a whole lot of drama on NBC this fall.

The network announced its fall 2015-2016 lineup Sunday. The new slate includes variety show “Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris,” “Heroes” revival “Heroes Reborn,” crime thriller “Blindspot,” Wesley Snipes’ thriller “The Player,” couples comedy “People Are Talking” and medical drama “Heartbreaker.”

The most surprising feature of the schedule is its drastic lack of comedies. Besides “Undateable,” which was renewed for a third season of all-live episodes, NBC’s only other half-hour comedy is newcomer “People Are Talking.” Both shows will air back-to-back on Friday night, meaning that NBC will have only one hour of comedy programming per week this fall. That’s the lowest number of comedies the network has had since the fall of 1978, according to Vulture, revealing that comedies clearly aren’t a priority for the peacock network.

NBC’s fall schedule is rounded out with renewed shows “The Blacklist,” “Grimm,” “Chicago P.D.,” “Chicago Fire,” “Law & Order: SVU,” “Mysteries of Laura,” “Undateable,” “Celebrity Apprentice” and “Hollywood Game Night.”

Check out trailers for four of NBC’s new shows below:

After Joan Didion, Joni Mitchell, and Neil Young, Quincy Jones Is the Latest Style Icon Turned Model

Quincy Jones for Buscemi

When the image of 80-year-old literary icon Joan Didion in Céline’s spring campaign first started circulating online, the outpouring of love and admiration from all corners of the Internet was unparalleled. And then just days later, Saint Laurent creative director Hedi Slimane unveiled the latest poster child for his brand of louche, rock ’n’ roll luxury—none other than Joni Mitchell. Needless to say the fashion blogopshere was atwitter once again.

Now it seems that some seriously stylish gents are trying their hand at modeling, too. Music legend Neil Young was cast in Supreme’s spring campaign dressed in the label’s simple box logo tee, flannel shirt, and hat, and today billboards of music impresario Quincy Jones, the new face of Buscemi—a sneaker line designed by Jon Buscemi, cousin of actor Steve—popped up on the Sunset Strip in L.A. Dressed in a suit, flanked by his signature piano and headphones, the iconic music producer balances Old World sensibilities with signature flair. But it’s not the mogul’s first turn in front of a fashion photographer—back in 2006, he appeared alongside Molly Sims in ads for Jimmy Choo. Given the current trend for older, wiser models, who’s to say what leagues of distinguished gentlemen the new season will bring? Here’s hoping that Sean Connery trades in his kilts for Prada fall 2015, or that Anthony Hopkins swaps out his Savile Row suits for Loewe.

Neil Patrick Harris, Narciso Rodriguez, Jenna Lyons, and More Come out to Celebrate The Center 2015 Dinner

Neil Patrick Harris and Jeffrey Tambor

After reopening its recently renovated and refreshed home just two months ago, The Center hosted an appropriately lavish celebration last night at Cipriani Wall Street toasting pillars of the LGBT community including actor Jeffrey Tambor, president of MTV and Logo Stephen Friedman, and COO of Combs Enterprises Brian Offutt. Sprinkled inside the former New York Stock Exchange home were actors Neil Patrick Harris, Mary-Louise Parker, and Alan Cumming; a bevy of models including Xiao Wen Ju, Devon Windsor, and Jarah Mariano; and designers such as Narciso Rodriguez, Alexis Bittar (who’s also a newly minted board member), Chris Benz, and Courtney Crangi with Jenna Lyons.

In a crowd filled with so many powerful icons, including Edie Windsor who pioneered the marriage equality movement in the landmark Supreme Court case, what were guests most excited about? “Jeffrey Tambor!” exclaimed Lyons in head-to-toe J.Crew and sporting a new cropped do. Crangi added, “This is a big deal as The Center is such a big part of our culture.” Tambor’s Transparent costar Judith Light, looking resplendent in a Nina Ricci frock punctuated by sparkling earrings from Verdura, beamed over her costar’s award and recalled her fondest memory. “He and I go back a long, long way,” mused Light. “I worked with Jeffrey Tambor at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater and have the most extraordinary memories of him in this one play that we did. It was a Feydeau farce called Cat Among the Pigeons. I would stand behind the set and look at the audience; he was so funny that the audience was practically falling out of the balcony. But he’s an extraordinary human being too. His devotion to this part and this work has been unparalleled.” The work Light referred to is Tambor’s Transparent performance in which he plays a trans woman. “Jeffrey Tambor has really gone out of his way and embodied a part of the LGBT community that I think sometimes doesn’t have such a strong platform for speaking. It’s worth celebrating,” said Chris Benz, creative director of Bill Blass.

Also worth celebrating were the $ 1 million dollars raised last night between the private donations and live auction items which included a walk-on role in Transparent and tickets to the MTV Video Music Awards this summer. But the main focus on the night was The Center’s new youth programs. “I’ve known about The Center for 24 years and utilized it,” said Bittar in a summery suit. “Tonight, they’re talking about the first-ever teen LGBT outpatient treating addiction in the USA. First ever.” Serving youths between the ages of fourteen and 22, “it’s such an important need in the gay community where addiction of all types is prevalent.”

With 300,000 visitors to The Center every year, Tambor was thrilled with the large turnout and the donations but felt that there’s always room for improvement. “This is a very, very important event,” said the actor. “The awards are tremendous but we’re here to raise awareness. To bring light and awareness takes money. And the revolution takes money. I’m here to be a part of that.”

Neil Patrick Harris’ Kids Will Make Your Holiday Spirits Bright

It’s a video that would make even the Grinch say, “Awwww.”

Neil Patrick Harris shared a precious family moment with his 1.2 million Instagram followers on Wednesday, and we can’t thank him enough for spreading the holiday cheer. Harris and his husband David Burtka’s 4-year-old twins, Harper and Gideon, sang “Jingle Bells” as they decorated their Christmas tree in their pajamas. Oh, and the fact that they miss some of the lyrics somehow makes it ten times cuter:

Yay! David is back home, and the family all together! Time to trim us a tree! #trim #carols #JingleFeels

Neil LaBute Q&A: The Controversial Playwright Talks About His L.A. Theater Takeover

2014-07-24-NeilLaButebyAaronEckhart.jpg

Fans of safe and saccharine theater in Los Angeles better run and hide this summer because acclaimed and controversial playwright Neil LaBute doesn’t just have one production currently in town — he has two!

Vilified and labeled as a misanthrope and misogynist thanks to his unflinching brand of art, indeed his plays and films have shocked many, including films In the Company of Men, Your Friends & Neighbors, Nurse Betty and The Shape of Things to Come. It’s interesting to have LaBute’s unrelenting drama, often filled with self-absorbed characters and very poignant and disturbingly social themes, takeover Los Angeles theater.

Continuing with his beauty trilogy in Reasons to Be Pretty at the Geffen Playhouse, LaBute takes on society’s ongoing fixation with beauty and in particular one man’s inability to say the right thing — ever. When Greg makes an innocuous, off-handed remark about his girlfriend Steph, it triggers a battle by which their relationship will forever be defined. Tony nominated for Best Play, Reasons to Be Pretty continues a series that includes The Shape of Things, Fat Pig (a previous Geffen Playhouse hit) and Reasons to Be Happy.

Meanwhile, across town on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood, LaBute’s personal In a Dark Dark House focuses on the many effects of sexual abuse and the way society might be expected to react to abused victims.

While LaBute has recently directed episodes of AMC’s “Hell on Wheels” as well as the good natured ensemble comedy Death at a Funeral possibly giving way to a kinder and gentler LaBute, it’s his taut dramas that have caused critics and some audiences to label him as a pariah.

Who can forget Aaron Eckhart’s character Chad in In the Company of Men hatefully blather, “Women. Nice ones, the most frigid of the race, it doesn’t matter in the end. Inside they’re all the same meat and gristle and hatred just simmering.”

Or that other gem of his, “Never trust anything that can bleed for a week and not die.”

You can see why LaBute is a lightning rod, even if the man himself doesn’t.

Your name and work evoke a strong gut reaction. Do you consider no reaction the worst kind of reaction?
I probably do. I would think just about anybody would feel that way. We’re taught at some age to always want positive reaction but it makes sense when you’re out there asking questions, which is a big part of what playwrights are supposed to do, not always having answers but at least asking questions. I think, depending on the questions, it’s very important to take the temperature of people. If people think you have nothing to say or you’re of little interest that would probably be the worst.

If everybody were to love your work, is that not the reaction you would want either?
I’m not the kid in class who only wants negative attention, that’s certainly not me. I’ll take nothing but positive attention, that’s OK. I feel that I’ve had almost negative attention for some things. I know what it feels like on both ends. You’re always trying to connect and tell stories that are different than what everyone else has. I’m always looking to connect with an audience, and yet, sometimes it’s negative but through that negativity sometimes you’ve left them with something to think about. I think both sides of that can be useful.

In college, some of your plays where shut down immediately after their premieres. How do you define success–just opening?
Getting in front of an audience, in this world, is the requirement for the endgame, at least for theater. Once you’ve written something you’re part of the way there. You do need to get in front of an audience. To have a connection with an audience is ultimately the goal.

With everything you’ve accomplished, is there still room for you to grow as an artist?
Of course, that’s why I probably go back to teach as often as possible, just because you learn a ton from teaching people. There are so many parts of this world that I’m interested in. I get more interested in editing as I work in film; I haven’t done much television and that world is new to me. Broadway is still a creature that I’m weary of. Event at my age, there are a lot of aspects that I have to learn or try to fail at.

Your name sparks a reaction. What’s the biggest misconception about you?
The ones that I hear upon meeting people sometimes are, ‘You’re much nicer than I thought you’d be.’ I wonder what it was exactly they were thinking. They imagine you’re the worst. They never seem to think you’re the best at what you can imagine. You were able to think of something, therefore, that must be you. Also, for the last seventeen – eighteen years, there’s been this label of misogyny that started with In the Company of Men, that’s a hard one to kick because people label you and once they’ve done that, they make it very hard for you. If they see something else, they’ll say, that’s no as misogynistic. For a movie that so many people actually saw as being a critical essay of men, being labeled misogynistic I thought was strange.

Is it fair that 17 years later people so closely identify you with that film?
I don’t think it would hurt to reassess things every five years or so. That would be nice of people to check in on that sort of thing. I know how it happens but it’s a bummer when you don’t agree with it.

Can you talk about the power of the written word and what the various outlets mean to you?

Theater is still a place that allows you to say anything you want to say and take on anything that is of interest to you. There is no taboo, not for me at least. There’s nothing that shouldn’t be taken on.

Film, I think, is a medium that people still see as a more popular form of entertainment. Television, I think, is becoming a great place for writers and storytellers. I like this idea of telling multiple stories about a set of characters. I always turn the page and write about a new group of people. For a writer, that’s a really interesting task to take on.

You have two shows currently playing in Los Angeles. What’s that like?
They’re two very different ones as well. I’m really excited by the people who are in them and also the directors.

What originally inspired these two productions?

You never know. I ended up with this third play in this trilogy about beauty; and I knew I wanted to do something about beauty and the way that we’ll change ourselves or change for others. In a Dark Dark House was just a story that came to me, not thinking about my own past so much as filtering what I knew about the lives that these characters have and then wanting to tell a story about siblings.

You’ve called In a Dark Dark House very personal, yet this version was tweaked from its original form when it premiered in New York. Is it still as personal now?
I think so. The work that was done honed the structure and I moved things around and ultimately I think this version is the best structure of the play. It’s not autobiographical but it’s touching on things that were close to my life.

So plays are never finite?
Oh God no! I just wrote a new monologue for Amber Tamblyn in Reasons to Be Pretty. She had some questions and thoughts and it led me to write something. They’re finished for now until somebody opens the book again and you start working on it again.

Reasons to Be Pretty marks your fourth collaboration with the Geffen Playhouse. What do you like about that theater?
It’s nice to have a home somewhere. Because you can spread yourself so far around and with so many people, it’s always great to go back to a place or group of people who you know and work with. It’s great when the Geffen is interested in me doing something again. I love the space but I also love the people who run the place.

Are you happy playing in intimate theaters or do you want Broadway or the Pantages, which is the big theater in Los Angeles?
I tend to write things that are often pretty small cast and I love small theaters. That said, there are things you write that you think could be for Broadway but I tend not to think or write in those terms. Sadly, what usually drives people to think something would be good for Broadway is the fact that they have some star who might be interested. Rare is the play that I’ve written that I think it can only fit on a stage for a thousand people. They’re often very intimate character studies.

You always get great talent in your plays, from David Duchovny to Ed Harris. What attracts big name actors to your work or is it that they just have to work?
It’s probably a mix and that’s OK for me. I think actors do, at some point, get a sense of a person who like actors and writes for actors, and is interested in them. I certainly feel that I’ve always liked actors and they get a buzz off me that says that. I never tend to write for people, as many good actors as I’ve had, I always have written just for characters and then good actors will appear. But like you said, some actors just want to work.

What do you hope audiences take away from a production of yours?
I just hope that there’s something that they find there, whether it is characters or themes. I tend not to write about themes so much, but I love the idea that somebody in today’s world, because we’ve created this kind of speed that we devour information these days, that any time that somebody goes to see your work and thinks about if for any length of time is a total victory.

Both Neil LaBute productions play through August 31. In a Dark Dark House plays at the Matrix Theatre, and Reasons to Be Pretty plays at the Geffen Playhouse.

A Letter Home: A Conversation with Neil Young

A Conversation with Neil Young

Mike Ragogna: Neil, your new album A Letter Home, might be the most personal album of your career. You recorded singer-songwriter classics that are dear to you with an old Voice-o-Graph recording booth that was popular during the forties and fifties. What inspired you to take this approach?

Neil Young: Well, I was visiting with my friend Jack [White] in Nashville and we were using his studio for a Willie Nelson tribute that we did for Willie’s birthday. Jack and I share a love of gizmos. We like mechanical things. So Jack was showing me some of his old gizmos and at the same time he was recording. People were coming and recording on the booth because it’s like from the state fair or something so people used to make records and send them to their friends, you’d put in a quarter or whatever and be able to record a record and send it. It was kind of like the email and voice mail of the day. So he was showing me this and people were coming in and making records, and the limit of the duration is two minutes and twenty seconds. I was working with it, and I put something down on it, just a little bit of song that I’d written or something. I listened to it back and I said, “Okay…all right! Why don’t I make an album on this thing?” He said, “Yeah, we can make an album!” I said, “Give me a little time to think of what it is,” but I’d also been working in the back of my mind on a roots project–“roots” being, “Where did I come from? What made me who I am? What music has effected me over the years? What feelings have I gotten from music that really made a difference? Where did the music that I love come from? What did it sound like?”

As all of this was percolating in the back of my mind, Jack was recording on his little machine that he has and I thought, “Ah, this all comes together for me.” So that’s when the idea came to do the album. It took me three months to locate the right songs and learn them and transcribe the lyrics. So I would find the lyrics somewhere and I would copy them out by hand, because that’s the way I remember things really well, as well as I do remember things, which is not that well, but that’s another subject for another time, probably the medical part of Huffington Post. But anyway, I did that and I created this record just singing those songs. I had a list of songs and I went in with Jack three months later after I had compiled the right list of songs that I really believed in and I practiced and I learned the chords really got used to what the little intricacies of the songs were. There are some great songwriters here. It’smore of a tribute to songwriting and to those folks that wrote those songs and to the art of singing a song and having it be what it is instead of it being a big production. So that’s kind of what it is.

MR: You cover a couple of Willie Nelson songs, Gordon Lightfoot songs, a Tim Hardin song… These are all songs that resonated with you strongly, right?

NY: Oh yeah, that’s the only reason I do them. They have to resonate with me personally in my life and what I believe and how I feel, on a personal level and on world levels. “On The Road Again” is kind of a world-level song for me. It’s like, “Yes, I love this, this is how I feel, I’m that kind of guy, I AM that guy.” Then there are other songs in there that are extremely personal and loving songs that are about relationships and my life at the time. I was living those songs, so they all work for me.

MR: There are songs on this album that seem to relate to other periods of your life or even other songs you recorded. For instance, “Needle Of Death,” “Needle And The Damage Done,” of course, comes to mind.

NY: Yeah, and “Ambulance Blues,” which is another song that I wrote is based on Bert Jansch’s “Needle Of Death,” it’s almost the same chords, you can see how I copped all the changes, I was so influenced by him I basically rewrote his song with a different theme. That’s the folk process, which is something that some people are still into. I am, so it means a lot to me.

MR: Over the years, when you wrote for your various albums, were you inspired by some of these songs?

NY: Oh yeah. These songs meant a lot to me, the feelings in these songs, more than maybe the style–with the exception of Bob [Dylan]’s songs, of course, which I was extremely influenced by. I was mostly influenced by the sentiments in the songs and by the inner feelings in songs and the way they resonated with me and my own life and how I felt, the oneness with the writers of these songs.

MR: I know your mother passed and this is basically a “letter” to her. If this letter had been sent home a little earlier, what do you think the reply would have been?

NY: Oh, she would’ve liked it. She would’ve loved it, just the fact that I was communicating and it was for her. I didn’t plan that thing. Jack told me, “You know, they used to send messages on these records. It wasn’t always just music, there’d be a message.” Rather than write a letter, because maybe some people couldn’t write, they used these recordings to say what they thought and send a message. So that’s how that worked.

MR: You show the essence of the song with these recordings, it doesn’t rely on technology or production values for its level of quality. It interesting how popular music has progressed in the exact opposite direction, relying more on technology than ever before.

NY: I have deviated now and then on different projects, but for me, it’s mostly about the feeling and the performance. If you’re talking about the performance of the song and getting the feeling out, there’s no reason to even listen to it after you’re done if you felt it when you sang it. If I feel it when I sing it and I go, “I did it, that’s it, that’s how I feel, that’s what I did and that’s what the song meant to me, I got the message out,” then I don’t even have to hear it. I don’t care what it sounds like because I’ll never be able to do it as good as that again, so it doesn’t matter. I just move on. The whole idea of a singer-songwriter singing the song from the heart, singing a song that means something to them and actually singing a song that’s good enough to stand up on its own without any accoutrements, without any production, without any machines supporting it, without any formulated beats, without any computer making sure that all the rhythms are justified so that everything is perfect, you take all those things away and put a great song there with a great performance, even if it’s not by the greatest vocalists in the world or the greatest guitar player or instrumentalist in the world, if that person is believing what they’re singing and it’s truly there and the song is great and the song is written from a real place, then the song’s going to resonate with anybody who wants to listen to it.

MR: Neil, it’s also interesting that your PONO system celebrates the audiophile approach, the other extreme of what you did with this project.

NY: Well, it does. It celebrates something else. This project, released through PONO, will be clearer than anything anyone’s heard of this project. Even if it’s the vinyl version of this project where you can hear the clicks and pops and surface noise, the sound of it will be more. In the digital realm, copying this song and playing it back on PONO will be clearer than anything anyone’s ever heard, with more depth than ever before and with more of the emotions of the song revealed than they got the first time because there’s just more there. When you’re dealing with feelings and you’re dealing with the ears, which are clearly the window to the soul–there’s nothing like the ears, everything else is pretty well surface, although smelling is good, but visualization is mostly just a temporary rush. Feeling from the soul, coming in through the ears, that’s what PONO’s all about. It reveals everything that the song has to offer, everything that the original recording of the song contains is revealed and PONO will be a revolution for music as far as being able to actually enjoy it. It’s for music lovers. It’s for people who really enjoy listening to music because finally, they will get what they deserve. It will a revolution for those people.

MR: You’re still very passionate about the PONO.

NY: Well, I’ve put a great deal of my time into it because I feel that the art of the recorded sound is the history of music and everything needs to be preserved in a way that it’s worthy of.

MR: Do you think there will be more letters home? Are you intrigued to do more of these kinds of projects?

NY: You know, the future’s a huge, gigantic place. I have no idea what’s going on out there, I’m just going to walk into it and see what happens.

MR: Well you are the master of the creative process. Do you have any advice for people who want to pursue those kinds of paths?

NY: They just have to do what they feel like doing and not listen to anybody else.

MR: Is there any guidance that these future artists might need?

NY: Inner guidance. Listen to yourself. Everybody’s got their own.

MR: Cool. Is there anything in your near future that we also should be excited about?

NY: I hope so! I don’t know what it is, but I’d say, “Better be ready for it.”
