Offline Dating Vs Online Dating

The advantages of offline dating are you can meet a member in person at an event in your city. Offline dating companies typically host Mixers in different cities for its members and many Mixers don’t charge a fee to attend. There is a cash bar and members are encouraged to purchase one drink that the venue keeps. This arrangement allows the offline dating company to host free Mixers. The member don’t pay to attend, the offline dating company doesn’t pay for space to host the Mixer and the venue makes money from the cash bar.

YouTube Star PewDiePie Apologizes After Using Racial Slur Online

YouTube star Felix Kjellberg (SHEHL’-burg), who goes by the online name PewDiePie, says he regrets using the “n-word” during a video live stream, saying he was an “idiot”.

Famed Gamer PewDiePie On Fade Watch After Blurting N-Word Online

PewDiePie, a popular live gamer who runs a highly-viewed YouTube channel, has found himself once again the focus of controversy. The native of Sweden blurted out the n-word with the hard “r” over the weekend during a live stream, adding himself once more to the on sight fade watch for being a spineless racist masking his harsh words as jokes.

Born Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, the 27-year-old YouTube “star” boasts over 57 million subscribers on his channel and well over 14 billion plays. A figure in the “Let’s Play” movement, PewDiePie’s gaming exploits, and over-the-top humor has made him something of a cult star in that select circle.

During a broadcast, while playing PlayerUnknown’s Battleground, an opponent was assaulting him with shots which Kjellberg replied online with, “What a f—–ng n—-r sorry, but what the f–k.”

Kjellberg then said, “I don’t mean that in a bad way.”

Right.

This latest offensive slip comes after PewDiePie lost contracts with Disney’s Maker Studios and YouTube after urging his fans to post anti-Semitic jokes and videos of his featuring reported Nazi imagery. Game makers  Campo Santo plan to file DCMA takedown requests to remove videos of Kjellberg playing its Firewatch title, according to Variety.

PewDiePie has yet to respond to the drama, but according to his Twitter feed, he’s not worried about the fade that should be raining down on him from on high soon.

British Online Retailer Avenue 32 Shuts Operations

DEAD END: British online retailer Avenue 32, which sold contemporary women’s wear, has shut down, the company said Wednesday.
The business posted a message on its web site: “Goodbye…After 6 wonderful years, we have decided to focus on new projects and so, sadly, Avenue32.com is now closed. Thank you for being such loyal customers. Orders placed before 11th August 2017 will be processed as normal and the returns period remains at 15 days from receiving your order.”
Launched in 2011 by chief executive officer Roberta Benteler, who had spent her career in private equity, Avenue 32 was backed by Germany’s Benteler Group, which makes steel tubes, components and systems for the auto industry.
Sources said the closure came down to financing as the company struggled to generate sales. Financials experts say it’s difficult for small online retailers to secure funding and financing nowadays: Not only do they have to show they are profitable, they are also facing competition from all directions. They have to compete with the big online luxury players such as Net-a-porter.com, Moda Operandi, Stylebop.com, Mytheresa.com Farfetch and Matchesonline.com, stand-alone brand sites and Instagram sellers. Last year, e-tailer Atterley Road ceased operations as it failed to secure new investment. The web

IN AN INSTANT: While many know Paul Margolin as the president of Marc Bouwer Inc., even more know him from Instagram. That was until Wednesday when his account was hacked — and gone with it, 46,000 followers.
That was unwelcome news for Margolin, who has worked as a social influencer with such brands as The Underwear Expert, Morphine Lips and the Chappy dating app, among others. When not working in Bouwer’s Fulton Street studio and office, he has been fielding requests from Musefind and WeTrend. More often than not, Margolin posted images with his fiancé Sergio Zapata. The 360-degree drone-shot video of Zapata proposing to Margolin near Bethesda Fountain in Central Park helped to make them a popular InstaCouple.
“My Instagram stories were getting 4,000 views on a story. There is a value to all of it,” Margolin said. “Plus, I just disappeared to everybody. I only followed 350 and I was followed by 46,000.”
In his 20s Margolin ditched a short-lived modeling career to help Bouwer start his company from the designer’s Greenwich Village apartment. 10 Reasons I Quit Online Dating

Like basically every person alive right now, I tried online dating. I figured if I wasn’t on there, I was missing out, missing an opportunity and missing finding my person.

2015-11-09-1447077860-3327227-Barrett_4964.jpg

I tried everything from tindr, to Jswipe, to grindr, to every other word that is missing an “e” in it.

I made lots of matches, talked to lots of “interesting” men and even went on a fair number of first dates.

However, after partaking in my own dating experiment, during which I went on one date every night for a week, and two dates on Friday, I finally reached my ultimate conclusion.

Online dating just isn’t for me.

I want to preface that for everything I say, I know there are a ton of people who will disagree, and have the relationships to prove it, but as I ventured into and out of the virtual dating sphere I found out a lot about myself. Additionally, I know my experiment might sound extreme, but I needed something extreme to happen for me to really give it up once and for all.

This is what I found out:

1. I Was Bored

If you’ve ever been on any of these apps, gay or straight, you know that most of your hunting, swiping and searching is done when you are bored. If you live in a cosmopolitan like myself then chances are you aren’t necessarily bored a lot because you have work, friends, fitness and a ton of other things constantly at your disposal, but boredom somehow creeps up on you. All of a sudden you’re bored at work, bored at home, bored with your friends, bored at the gym. I think you catch my drift.

Life just isn’t as exciting as you want it to be, and the thought that maybe just around the next swipe is the person you’ve been searching for all along is exciting.

However, the problem arises when you finally do get excited, but continue to keep swiping because why not?

2. No One Was Ever Who I Thought They Were

As you make matches, swipe past people and possibly converse you start to build an idea of who the person is on the other side of the phone. You create an ideal, and all of a sudden every little nuance becomes a bigger complexity to who that person is, and how they operate.

You can’t help, but think, “Damn, where have you been all my life?”

And then bam.

Mister Amazing loses his luster. He either starts creeping real hard, says something that throws everything off, disappears or just never decides to meet up.

If by some crazy force of nature you guys do set a date and meet, chances are he is not who he claimed to be, or who you built him up to be.

His confident demeanor is replaced with one that is far less interesting, and not having the phone as an easy buffer shows you a much different person than the one you thought you had been chatting with.

This is why after 6 first dates in 5 days, I not once found myself wanting a second date.

3. I Am Pickier Online Than In Real Life

Having someone be presented essentially as a two-dimensional option, rather than a real life opportunity makes them feel much more disposable. I know personally, I looked at everything: from what you said on your profile, to how you said it, to what pictures you picked to best represent you with not just a little bit of judgment, but a lot.

There was no energy, no butterflies, no eyes from across the room to say, “Hey, wait there’s something special about this one, and we can’t put our fingers on it.”

It was all brain, and no heart in who I decided to virtually flirt with. You literally became a resume that I could toss into the trash pile without any real thought, or feeling, which isn’t how finding our potential partner should work.

4. I Became Way More Shallow

Sure, whether it’s real life or virtual reality, the first thing you notice is how someone looks, but in a real life, you quickly see how someone acts, moves, sounds, etc.

These other important attributes are what creates someone individuality, and takes them from being just anyone to uniquely them.

If I didn’t like what I saw, I was quick to swipe left. No thought other than, nope, not what I think I like. Hair, eyes, skin color, height, weight all became your stats in a world where I had never used statistics to make my choice of who I might be interested in.

Yes, all those things did and do continue to play a part of who I am interested in, but online they became all I saw, and I left little room to be more open-minded than had I been meeting these gentlemen in person.

Sometimes you just don’t know you’re best angles, and sometimes you do, which is why I always say buyer beware when it comes to what you think you’re getting online.

5. I Don’t Like Games

And that’s exactly what all these things are, games.

While none of these apps call themselves games, it doesn’t take much effort to realize that that is exactly what they are. Video games, if you will, where you become the player, and everyone else is the game.

There are rules, directions and even moments asking if you’d like to chat, or “keep playing.”

They say don’t hate the player, hate the game, and that is exactly what ended up happening for me. I hated the game and playing only made me like myself less and less.

6. I Wasn’t Honoring My Truth

Going off the idea that these things are a game with rules, I quickly found myself changing who I was to best “win” at the game.

I was holding myself back, I was playing up certain parts of myself, and playing down other characteristics, all so I could be more “desirable.”

I became who I thought I was supposed to be, not who I was. I acted more way casual, and less emotional than I really am. I put only the best pictures of myself out there, but not what I look like when I wake up in the morning.

I filtered myself in basically every way, and took what makes me uniquely special out of the equation, so I could be more “marketable.” That isn’t sexy, romantic or interesting. It’s dishonest, dull and way too technical for something that shouldn’t be so systematic.

7. I Wasn’t Happy

While I didn’t realize this till months later, I was simply unhappy with my life. I was using the idea of dating as an escape from my own life because well, it’s an easy distraction, and even easier the more venues, or apps, you have to keep the hunt alive.

I don’t think this is necessarily true for everyone facilitating these tools, but I do think it’s way more common than many people realize.

It’s another numbing device in the avoidance of ourselves. Focusing your attention on others as a way to not look in the mirror, and find what is truly wrong, hurting or uncomfortable at this moment in our own lives.

It’s really easy to think that when you find someone a lot of your issues will just subside or disappear, but the truth is until you start to work on you, you’ll never be happy, coupled up or single.

One of the hardest things to do is look in the mirror and be honest with yourself because there usually is a lot of sadness, confusion and disappointment. However, when you finally admit this to yourself, you take the first step to changing all of that.

8. It Made Me Crazy

Thinking about who I could meet, having numerous conversations with multiple people and trying to keep up with all of it was exhausting.

Call me old-fahsioned, but I think there is something beyond romantic about meeting someone, one person, and courting each other. Finding out about each other, focusing on just him and seeing where it could go.

Having Larry, Moe and Curly in the wings just kept me unnecessarily anxious, unfocused and a part of the three stooges.

Call me crazy because I for thinking I wanted to, or could juggle that many men at one time.

9. I Wanted A Relationship/Boyfriend

I know many people will disagree with me when discussing this topic, but hear me out.

As I chatted, met and repeated each of these steps with guy after guy, and there even was one named, Guy, I found myself constantly sitting across the table from someone, who wasn’t on my page.

Maybe it was the guys I was swiping right to, the app I was choosing to facilitate or any other number of reasons, but it seemed like most of these men didn’t actually want a relationship.

They wanted something, but not a relationship.

They wanted validation. They wanted attention. They wanted someone to have dinner, a conversation or sex with, but not actually a relationship.

Essentially, they wanted to win the game, by winning me over, and that was that.

Winning meant different things to different people, but it never felt like there was two winners at the end of it all, and in my opinion, there is no point in taking part in anything where you don’t have two winners.

I know that life won’t always make this the outcome, and that’s ok, but to go into anything with only your wants, needs and desires in mind, sets you and your potential partner up for a lose/lose situation.

I truly believe it’s either two winners, or two losers and the later played out far too frequently in this unwinnable game.

10. It Just Isn’t For Me

In the end we all have the right to do, act and say as we please, but as I had swam through the never ending pool of virtual daters, I found myself tired, numb and even more bored than when I had started.

I didn’t like the shallow conversations I was having to have over and over again. I didn’t like the lack of emotion that was fostered through staring at my screen for hours, and I didn’t like that I felt bad day after day about not finding what I had been searching for.

After being off all dating apps for about a year, I can honestly say I am more at peace with my life, my love life and myself. I have met some great guys in real life, “organically,” if you will, who have showed me that there are some great ones still out there, and you don’t need to be staring at your screen to find them.

Frankly, you need to be doing the opposite. Look up, look around you, look all over. There are great, funny, interesting individuals all over the place: at work, on the subway, in the grocery store, on the street. The key is to just get over yourself, and say hi.

Yes, you might get rejected, but that’s ok!

We let so many people walk right past us, sit down next to us, and stare at us, but never take a leap of faith and say hi because we don’t have a buffer. Forget about the buffer, forget about your pride, forget about everything because when you see someone in real life, and they give you butterflies, you need to honor that feeling and fly with them.

Dating isn’t a game, there shouldn’t be rules, and the longer you stay a player the longer you just get stuck playing a video game.

I’m not saying quit everything all at once, but I am saying that if the thought of doing that scares you, you’re probably addicted and actually do need one big break from all of them.

Enjoy the process, enjoy your time and most importantly enjoy yourself because until you do, no one else is going to enjoy you either.

Finding inner peace shows, and will create peace in all other aspects of your life. Whether it’s dating, relationships or work confidence is gold.

Good luck, and happy dating.

10 Tips for Fighting Stigmatizing and Defamatory Comments Online

With Thanks to The Bisexual Leadership Roundtable, The Anti-Defamation League, The Daily Dot, and Facebook.

As a citizen of the United States of America, I’m proud of our country for many reasons. One of those reasons that’s especially important to me as writer, poet, and LGBTQ activist is the fact that the First Amendment grants our citizens freedom of speech–a critical condition for facilitating discussions that help our society advance.

Recently, however, I had an experience that made me question where we draw the line between freedom of speech and defamation–and what recourse there is for those who believe they’ve been defamed. Here’s what happened:

On September 30th, 2015, The Daily Dot ran my article titled “Why I celebrate my scarlet letter,” which was originally published under a different title on the Huffington Post. But when they promoted it on their Facebook page, something horrible happened.

A Facebook user made an extremely hurtful, defamatory comment about me. It was so atrocious that I won’t even repeat it here. Suffice it to say, the comment was completely unfounded. Moreover, it was a blatant example of biphobia, as well as stigmatization of people who work or have worked in the adult industry.

Of course, it was likely the product of a cyber bully looking to push some buttons. But that didn’t make it any less cruel, not to mention potentially damaging on both professional and psychological levels. So I set out to get the comment removed. America is, after all, the home of the brave, too. And every time someone stands up to a bully, it’s a step towards a safer and more tolerant society for us all.

Tip # 1: If you feel physically threatened by an online comment, report it to your local FBI office.

I didn’t feel physically threatened, though I certainly felt the comment was intended to incite prejudice against me. I decided to report it to Facebook first.

Tip # 2: Report the incident to the platform in question via its designated channels.

On Facebook, to the right of a comment, there’s a small “x” that allows you to hide it. I clicked the “x” and was presented with an option to report the comment, which I did.

Tip # 3: Engage your community.

While I waited for a response, I shared my concerns with the other members of the Bisexual Leadership Roundtable, many of whom were kind enough to also report the issue to Facebook. To our surprise, each of us received what looked like an automated response from Facebook stating the comment didn’t violate their Community Standards.

Tip # 4: Determine whether you’re using the right terminology.

I’d initially reported the comment to Facebook as harassment, but then I realized the terminology might be incorrect. Upon review of Facebook’s Community Standards, I learned they remove hate speech directed at private individuals and public figures. This begged the question: if the comment didn’t qualify as harassment, was it hate speech? Or was it defamation?

Some research into hate speech and defamation quickly showed the comment qualified as both. So despite being somewhat discouraged, I knew I had to follow through with the matter, this time using more appropriate terminology.

Tip # 5: Find other channels to communicate your concern.

There’s usually more than one way to connect with a company. Over the course of the next week, I contacted Facebook via their private messaging app, as well as through a number of email addresses I found online, requesting they reconsider their earlier decision and remove the comment. I also reached out to The Daily Dot via email and a direct message.

Tip # 6: Stay calm and focused.

As the days passed and the comment remained visible for all to see, I grew more upset and frustrated. But I realized I couldn’t let my frustration get in the way of looking at the situation objectively.

Tip # 7: Be patient.

Facebook has almost 1.5 billion users worldwide. The Daily Dot has had more than 23 million unique visitors to its website. With thousands of people contacting these companies each day, I knew it could take a while for my request to land on the right person’s desk.

Tip # 8: Seek expert advice.

After calm consideration, I decided it was time to ask the experts for help. And that’s when I had the good fortune of connecting with Norman Abbot, Assistant Regional Director at the New England Chapter of the Anti-Defamation League.

It proved to be a turning point. Norman encouraged me to keep reaching out to both The Daily Dot and Facebook. Together, we came up with the idea to email people in leadership positions about the matter.

Tip # 9: Determine who’s in a position to help you, and reach out to him or her in a positive, polite manner.

In a last-ditch effort to be heard, I wrote both to Facebook’s General Counsel, as well as Nicholas White, The Daily Dot’s Editor in Chief and CEO, once again explaining the situation and requesting they delete the comment.

To my relief, the very next day, Austin Powell, Managing Editor at The Daily Dot, emailed. He informed me that the comment was now hidden to everybody but the original poster; a strategy proven to be more effective than deleting comments or blocking users in this kind of situation.

Minutes later, Matt Silverman, Director of Audience at The Daily Dot, contacted me via a Facebook direct message, apologizing for the delay and explaining that my email had likely been overlooked among the deluge of messages his team receives every day. He also emphasized that this was exactly the kind of comment his team works to remove on a regular basis.

Finally, that same morning, Facebook ‘s legal department got back to me, saying they’d looked into the matter but by then, it had already been resolved.

Tip # 10: Make note of successful strategies, and share them with others.

Sharing successful strategies with others can be key in combatting online defamation and stigmatization.

For example, Austin Powell advises that if you have a concern about The Daily Dot, you can use their feedback widget on their website. You can also contact authors via their email addresses in their bylines. And their About page lists the full staff along with email addresses. Most publications have a similar system. And Facebook offers an online form to report a violation or infringement of your rights.

Looking back on the experience, there was a point in this process when I was almost ready to give up. I felt as if I were invisible; as if nobody at these large corporations was at all concerned about my rights and wellbeing. But the encouragement of the bisexual community, as well as Norman Abbot’s kind support and objective insights, inspired me to keep going. And when I finally received responses, they were as respectful and effective as I could wish for, especially those from The Daily Dot.

In short, the experience taught me an invaluable lesson: with community support and determination to reach people who are in a position to help, we can fight defamation and stigmatization. And that’s why I’ll forever be grateful to the Bisexual Leadership Roundtable, the Anti-Defamation League, The Daily Dot, and Facebook.

The Over-50 Step-by-Step Guide To Online Dating Success

Last month, I wrote a piece on the differences between what men worried about when they were dating in their teens (“Will she laugh at my peach fuzz?”) compared to their concerns when dating Over 50 (“Will she laugh at my back hair?”). You can read the other 24 here.

When it comes to overall changes in the world of dating between then and now, the very best improvement has to be online dating. Truly, it’s an historic innovation that ranks up there with the cotton gin, penicillin, and those lights in the parking garages that show you which spaces are empty.

Online dating just makes everything so simple.

Instead of spotting someone of interest; figuring a way to get to know him or her; doing your best to make a good impression; then working up the courage to ask her out (man) or hoping he will (woman), you merely fill out an online form, add some pictures, click a button, and boom: it’s game on.

How that game will go is impossible to say. Maybe you’ll find the love of your life, as the major online dating companies all seem to promise. Maybe you’ll engage in a steady stream of short-term, non-committed, sexually-driven encounters as a few of my friends did. Or maybe, like me, you’ll just have a nice time and meet some interesting people (okay, fine, I know what you’re thinking — yes, of course I’m envious of those friends…).

If you’re single and considering a full profile site like Match or OkCupid, or if you’re in a less than ideal marriage and wondering about online dating (check out this article on that situation), here’s a step-by-step look at getting the process started:

Get a separate, nondescript email address. You can do this for free through gmail, hotmail, yahoo, or others. Privacy is certainly a factor, but it’s also easier to keep your dating correspondence separate from your regular personal and business email. You’ll get lots of emails from your dating site, and hopefully a flood from people eager to meet you.

Choose your dating site screen name. Dating site screen names span the entire gamut. People use first names or initials, a personality trait (Loves2Laugh), a favorite activity (GolfNut), their hometown (LABabe), their profession (ElMatador), or a combination (NYCDocRuns). It’s wide open, and gives you a chance to highlight something(s) about yourself to catch their eye. So be prepared before you go online, recognizing you’ll likely have to add random characters (zip code, birth year, underscores) to achieve uniqueness. If you use a full-sentence-in-a-screen-name like “Imaybthe14U2luv4evr,” chances are good U will B 4gotN.

Add pictures. Okay, here’s a fact: your primary picture will make or break your online dating experience. But wait, you say. I’m on a full profile site because I abhor the shallowness of swipe apps like Tinder. I’m so much more than my picture; I’ve got hopes and dreams and wit and style, all of which I need to express fully so potential dates will know the true me, inside and out.

Yeah, that’s great. But if they don’t like your picture, they’re not reading a word you wrote.

Which isn’t to say you’ve got to look like Brad or Angelina to succeed at online dating. Of course not. But this photo needs to show you at your best. A clear shot, a nice smile, and bright eyes will help you score points (an Over 50 photo tip: looking up at the camera can help prevent that mess below our jaws…). Avoid hats, sunglasses, and being too “artsy.” And this picture must be mostly your face — if you’re turned away, or you’re too small to really make out, you’re going to get passed on.

Then add at least four or five additional pictures. They should both prove your primary shot isn’t a fluke, and illustrate other aspects of your life. You might include photos with your kids, your dog, traveling, hiking or biking, perhaps a business portrait. At least one should show your body head to toe. And make sure they’re consistently good. You don’t want someone to click through your pictures and go, “Wow … very nice … excellent … oooh, that’s too bad. Pass.”

Your pictures must be fairly recent. Not yesterday, but not (original) Clinton Administration. It makes absolutely no sense to post old photos, then show up looking like the parent of the person your date expected. At that point, there is zero chance you’ll win him or her over with your sparkling personality. And if you do have to use a great shot from the 00’s, cop to it and put the date in the picture’s caption.

Remember: a photograph transmits a tremendous amount of information. Be aware of that fact when choosing yours, and when browsing other’s.

Write your profile. For the “essay portion,” keep these basic concepts in mind:

First, be brief. Shakespeare didn’t know from online dating, but his “… brevity is the soul of wit” is spot on. Nobody is going to wade through through a fifty line block of solid text about what it will take to be your soulmate. Thanks to the internet, most people just skim, looking for nuggets of interest. Make it easy for your reader.

Secondly, stay positive, but show some humility. Nobody’s life is perfect, and portraying yours that way won’t make you look good. You’re over fifty and single — something didn’t work out at some point along the way. And that’s okay, since it’s the same for the people reading your words. By all means emphasize the good things in your life, but noting you’ve had a down or two among the ups only makes you more genuine, relatable, and approachable.

And finally, rather than presenting a dry list of your specific skills or traits, tell your potential dates what’s in it for them. For instance, instead of saying you’re a great cook, mention how much you enjoy preparing a gourmet meal for two. Rather than bragging about the extensive travel you’ve done, note how wonderful it would be to show a very special someone the timeless beauty of Florence. In other words, don’t sell the feature, sell the benefit.

Answer the questions. In the “multiple choice” section you’ll select the best answers about yourself, and what you’re looking for in a potential date.

First biggie is age, and again the suggestion is to be honest. Some people list themselves as younger for “search purposes,” then tell the truth in their profile; that’s not as bad as using ancient pictures, but again gets you off to a poor start. Similarly, be honest, or at least honest-ish, for questions about your height, body-type, exercise frequency, etc.

As for questions about what you’re seeking in a date, go as broad as possible. List yourself as open to a wide age-range, at least a few years beyond your own. For topics like religion, ethnicity, hair color, etc., select “no preference” as often as you possibly can. Showing how open you are makes you look better to people inspecting your profile, and should lead to more contacts. You’re under no obligation, so why not have as many options as possible (and really, are you so “athletic and toned” that you’ll only date someone who’s likewise)?

Go Live. Launch your completed profile on a Sunday. Then get busy looking for people to approach, enjoy the contacts that pour in for you, or both. If things go well, you may have dates set for the very next weekend, and be off and running.

Next time we’ll look at approaching people you’re interested in, evaluating and responding when you’re contacted, setting up that first date, and the date itself.

How To Get Online Dates If You’re A Woman Over 50 (May Involve Cheating)

When High50‘s online dating columnist Louisa Whitehead-Payne’s efforts produce a distinct lack of invitations from men, our writer makes an objective appraisal of just what type of women are getting the interest and why.

Reality bites hard. I have been rejected by my first two hopefuls. Invitations to connect are not exactly pouring in. Market research is the answer.

I switch gender and take a look at what I would see if I were a bloke. There are so many more women than men out there! The odds are really stacked.

Encounters Dating lists the most popular profiles so I look at who gets the most views. My views are in double figures but the hotties are in the hundreds.

What works are very pretty, feminine portraits. Long hair. Blonde preferably, but not exclusively (thank goodness, as I am brunette). The most hit-upon lady also has a glammy holiday shot of her in a white lace playsuit, with long brown limbs much in evidence. Bitch.

My intrepid-looking pic (windswept hair, freckle-faced, no make-up) clearly doesn’t cut the mustard compared to girly-girly pretties. Not even with Halong Bay behind me to show how interesting I am. Bugger! And I thought we had come a long way.

Now I should point out that I am tall, slim, good-looking and actually a match for the top 10 older ladies. I was just staggered that the girly presentation was everything. Still. At our age.

I Knocked Seven Years Off My Age

Age. That was the thing. I look at the age of women that the men were seeking by changing my age on a fake profile I created. Suddenly hundreds of men that were not a match were suddenly a match.

Most men aged 50 to 60 are looking for women around five to 20 years younger. Further Googling reveals that the average number of years women take off their age on dating sites is 15. Fifteen! Frankly, I can’t say I blame them.

Why Do Women Our Age Endure Online Dating?

But what happens when they turn up for a date? I could not bear the horrified disappointment in the eyes of a date when creature more elderly than expected rocks up. So I chop seven years off as I think I could get away with that.

I am learning to play the game.

Sex Buddies

A newly single girlfriend is coming for the weekend to compare notes. Let me tell you about Gayle. Her first online dating experience was on an extramarital website. Despite an unhappy, sexless marriage she hadn’t wanted to split up while her kids were still at home.

She was specific about what she wanted: a tall guy with a six-pack and a shaven head. She would meet him for a glass of wine and they would part after 15 minutes or go upstairs to the room she had booked and have sex.

The men she spoke to simply didn’t believe she didn’t want dinner first. But she didn’t need a hot meal, she needed hot sex. And that is exactly what she got.

But then she fell in love with her first date. And left her husband for him. Then, after five years together, he wouldn’t commit, so she walked away. This time, she says, she is dating properly rather than improperly.

The Injustice Of Marketing Ourselves

Two ballsy but bruised ladies, then. Drinking red wine and sharing stories. At the end of the evening we are seething with resentment about the injustice of it all. We are angry that we have to market ourselves to men more than they seem to have to do to us.

We’re furious that a little light cheating is necessary to attract a man of the age we want. It’s crazy that two successful and sassy women are having to pander to what men like to get what we want.

And Gayle is super annoyed when I say her holiday body shot made her thighs look fat and that she shouldn’t use it on her profile.

Profile Pictures

I decide to stop seething and swallow my pride. Gayle decides to seethe for longer and says she’ll keep the fat thigh shot. She is principled… me, I’m a pragmatist.

So I upgrade my photos to pretty-pretty selfies. And, guess what? The interest in me quadruples.

I get the bit between my teeth and decide to favorite every man I find interesting on both websites to see what happens. If the odds are stacked against you and it’s a numbers game, you need to play those odds. I don’t like losing so I decide to play to win. And the fat thighs don’t make it on to Gayle’s profile either.

So, ladies, swallow your pride, lower your age, gussy yourself up and play the numbers game. All’s not fair in internet love so get over it and play to win.

Online Reviews Can Impact a Business’ Reputation, Sales

A few weeks ago I surprised my lucky special lady with an online purchase. This was to make up for an argument the night before in which she was of course wrong, but I felt the need to make things right nonetheless. Needless to say, time was of the essence, so I opted for the “same day delivery” service.

12 Chic Online Wedding Invites That Make the Case for Going Paperless

wedding invitations

Emily Post is probably rolling over in her grave knowing that online wedding invitations even exist, but that doesn’t mean that sending them is a faux pas. In fact, they cost less and make keeping track of RSVPs much more seamless. Wedding planning can take a lot out of even the most organized, OCD bride, and if one element of the process can be made easier, why not indulge? E-invites, though often quite garish, are becoming more and more prevalent and, thankfully, more stylish. If you know where to look, the calligraphy can be beautiful, the templates creative, and the designs made in the same sophisticated vein as the real deal. As much as Mrs. Post might have lamented it, here are 12 of the chicest online wedding invites to click on in lieu of paper.

What Men Want, According to Online Dating

I’m trying this online dating thing. You see, I’m late 30s and almost officially divorced. As a single mom, I don’t have much options meeting men and when I do go out, guys in their mid-20s flock to me. It’s sweet but not really practical.

So here I am, finally splashing in the big kid pool called dating. I wasn’t sure what men wanted at my age. I mean, I had been monogamous for years and so I didn’t know what to expect. I signed up for a few sites, and low and behold, I have learned a few things about what men want, according to online dating. I thought it would be conversation, company, and maybe sex.
Turns out it’s not exactly what I had expected.

Yard Work:
“I’m looking for a woman to go fishing with and do yard work. I hope she enjoys it!”

This was a message I received from a man.

Note, if you have ever seen me with a weed whacker, you would know that enjoying yard work + Laura is virtually impossible.

Apparently men don’t want good conversation, they want someone to pick those damn weeds!

Answer Their Damn Messages:
“We could have had something good together!”

I hadn’t responded to the 50th email of his so he was angry about all of our romantic tensions dying.

Apparently, men want to be acknowledged just like women, even if they’re stalkers.

Find Good Plastic Surgeons:
The first message I received from one man was: “I love your tits. Where did you get them done?”
Apparently, men want to know the names of good plastic surgeons for their future ex-wives I’m assuming.
P.S. They’re real, Kiddo.

No Games, No Drama:
No games. No drama. I’m no drama. I’m no games. I’m not here for games.
The game and drama speak is endless. Men shout from their online profiles: NO DRAMA.

Apparently, men are becoming VERY serious about their online dating and attempting to cover up their endless need for drama with a refusal of said need.
Everyone knows that when thou protests much there is something to hide.

A Foot Rub:
“I would love someone to rub my feet.”
Apparently, this guy’s concubine was out to lunch and he just needed a fill-in.
Hey if the pay is good…why not?

More Kids: But In His Order:
“I want more children. A boy first and then a girl, and a year apart total.”
Apparently, this is a baby-making service and not an online dating tool. I wonder how he planned on guaranteeing the gender of the kids?

I’ve Been So Blessed:
I messaged one man saying hello. He got back to me stating that “I am incredibly blessed with the ability to already find two people to talk to and so I will be closing all opportunities at this time.”

Apparently, he wasn’t blessed with two women to date but blessed with a gift from God or the ability to sound like a contestant in the Miss America contest.

At this rate, I may not be meeting quality men but at least I’m “learning” so much and laughing about it!

Signed,
The Woman who has Real Breasts & Hates Yardwork

‘Sexist’ Tweet About Amal Clooney Prompts Outrage Online

She’s a renowned human rights lawyer whose clients have included Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and the state of Cambodia. She’s been appointed to several United Nations commissions, and has spent time teaching at Columbia Law School, The Hague Academy of International Law and other respected institutions.

Yet, on Saturday, when the Associated Press penned a tweet about Amal Clooney (née Alamuddin), they chose not to identify her by her many achievements but instead by her marriage to actor George Clooney.

The decision prompted outrage on social media, as many netizens accused the news outlet of sexism.

In the wake of the criticism, the AP did not edit or remove the original tweet about Clooney, but in a subsequent post referred to the attorney as a “human rights lawyer.”

Clooney, 37, had been in the news because of her involvement in the trial of Egyptian-Canadian journalist Mohammed Fahmy.

Fahmy was one of the three Al-Jazeera English journalists who were handed three-year jail terms on Saturday for broadcasting material deemed “harmful to Egypt” following the 2013 military coup.

Clooney, who represented Fahmy, has called on Egyptian presidentAbdel Fattah el-Sissi, to pardon the men.

“The verdict today sends a very dangerous message in Egypt,” said Clooney after the ruling. “It sends a message that journalists can be locked up for simply doing their job, for telling the truth and reporting the news. And it sends a dangerous message that there are judges in Egypt who will allow their courts to become instruments of political repression and propaganda.”

That Time ‘Gilmore Girls’ Predicted The Future Of Online News

“Gilmore Girls” was a groundbreaking show. It was celebrated for its portrayal of a nuanced relationship between a single mother and daughter, was written in a trademark style and has experienced a major resurgence in popularity in the past year, since coming to Netflix.

We always knew the show was special, but we didn’t realize how extraordinarily prescient it could be at times. In fact, one of its main characters predicted the future of feel-good news (the kind of thing you’d see on Upworthy today) all the way back in 2005.

In the show’s sixth season, Lorelai Gilmore expresses her frustration with all of the bad news being reported in the newspaper, then says she plans to start her own publication that’s only for “good” news.

Sound familiar? It should. Positive-leaning sites like Upworthy, ViralNova and even The Huffington Post’s own Good News page have attracted huge followings in the past few years.

Research shows that exposure to inspirational news can significantly improve your mood – which might explain why these sites have become so popular.

Lorelai’s idea was a good one, and it was years ahead of its time. (Upworthy launched in 2012.) And to think we always considered Rory the smart one!

Hackers Claim To Dump Ashley Madison User Data Online

By Alastair Sharp and Josephine Mason

TORONTO, Aug 18 (Reuters) – Hackers dumped online personal details of more than a million users of infidelity website AshleyMadison.com, tech websites reported on Tuesday, the latest high-profile cyber attack that threatens to wreak strife in relationships across the globe.

After threatening to release salacious details on as many as 37 million customers of the website, which uses the slogan “Life is short. Have an affair,” hackers claimed to publish a huge cache of email addresses and credit card data stolen in July.

Reuters was not immediately able to confirm the authenticity of the posting. Avid Life Media, which owns Ashley Madison and Established Men, widely described as a “sugar daddy site,” did not verify the data was real, but said it was aware of the claim.

The hackers used the dark web which is only accessible using a specialized browser.

Still within hours, thousands of email addresses from North America and Europe including many linked to corporations and universities sprouted up on other sites as people decrypted the database. It is possible to create an Ashley Madison account using someone else’s name and email.

The hackers have appointed themselves as “the moral judge, juror, and executioner, seeing fit to impose a personal notion of virtue on all of society,” the company said in a statement.

“These are illegitimate acts that have real consequences for innocent citizens who are simply going about their daily lives,” it said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the theft alongside the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and local police, it said.

The hackers, who call themselves The Impact Team, leaked snippets of the compromised data in July and threatened to publish names and nude photos and sexual fantasies of customers unless Ashley Madison and another site owned by Avid Life were taken down.

“Avid Life Media has failed to take down Ashley Madison and Established Men,” tech website Wired quoted The Impact Team as saying in a statement accompanying the online dump.

“We have explained the fraud, deceit, and stupidity of ALM (Avid Life Media) and their members. Now everyone gets to see their data,” the hackers said, according to Wired.

Other higher-profile attacks such as those on big companies, like Sony Pictures Entertainment and Target, have seen credit card data of customers stolen, unleashing massive financial damage to individuals and companies.

But this data dump appeared to confirm that the hackers were not driven by blackmail or commercial motives, but rather ideological ones.

The intrusion into the private lives of individuals marked a watershed moment in cyber crime as the data spread across the web, said Ajay K. Sood, General Manager for Canada of cyber security firm FireEye Inc.

“These guys want as much notoriety as possible. This isn’t cyber terrorism. It’s cyber vigilantism,” he said.

Avid Life has said it is convinced the hackers were formerly connected to the company.

Still the dump was massive, according to Troy Hunt, a Microsoft security expert, who said more than 1 million unique email addresses were attached to payment records.

Wired said 9.7 gigabytes of data was posted, and appeared to include member account and credit card details.

Toronto-based cybersecurity firm Cycura, which was hired by Avid Life to investigate the attack, said it was not authorized to speak on the matter. (Reporting by Alastair Sharp and Josephine Mason; Editing by Alan Crosby)

My Husband Left Me For A Younger Woman — And Now I’m Online Dating

In the second instalment of her dating exploits after her husband walked out for a younger model, our new 50-something columnist Louisa Whitehead-Payne* hears from a horny farmer on Muddy Matches, lies about her age and finds that a ‘tactile soulmate’ is code for ‘sex with someone I like’.

As you read last week, I have eliminated escorts and adult dating from my enquiry into online dating. Despite not having had sex for six years, I’m going after something a bit more vanilla. But how to decide among the bewildering array of websites?

EHarmony, Match.com, Zoosk? I try one and to my horror it’s like a computer game or a supermarket loyalty scheme. You have to wink at people and earn coins! For what, for goodness sake? I find this gamification undignified and trivializing. Not for me … not the sort of fun and games I am after at all.

Muddy Matches: Hello Farmer

The Telegraph website recommends the usual suspects, plus there is Encounters from The Times and an odd one called Muddy Matches. Maybe there are dirty people on it? It turns out it is for people who like the country or who live in the country. Well, I have just moved to the country so I qualify…

The people on the site seem straightforward. Amid the odd horny-handed sons of the soil and pics of men and their tractors, there are some who look eminently suitable. And some with red trousers so there might even be some posh boys to boot! I pays my money and look to take my choice.

Goody, you can add people to your favorites so I save everyone who I think I might look at later. All of a sudden I get a message from handsome Nobby in Norfolk, who notes that I have added him to my favorites. What! How does he know? It doesn’t say he’s a clairvoyant on his profile. Why don’t they tell you that saving a person’s profile sends an alert to them? I had no idea! I have clearly said hello to dozens of men who no doubt will be on to me in a heartbeat.

Men’s Profile Photos

Dishy Nobby, who appears to own an Aga cooker (a good sign, I think), asks me why I haven’t uploaded a picture and I say that the site has yet to approve it. (Sites check pictures to keep it clean.)

The men’s pictures are generally poor quality. Lots of furtive selfies. I try to gauge if they are handsome. Tall, it tells you. Dark, some of the photos are so bad that, frankly, it’s hard to tell. Some even have cropped someone out as you can see a female hand just showing round the shoulder.

I discover that the norm is to have a portrait as your profile and a full length in the additional photos so that people can assess what sort of bod you have. There are lots of pics of men on holiday in their swimmers. Generally porkers don’t put a bod shot in.

A ‘Tactile Soulmate’: Code For Sex

I quickly work out that most men in their 50s are looking for much younger women. Good job I had lied about my age, then! It seems that to attract a man in his mid-50s I need to be 35 to 50. So my dating age of 48 looks like a good call. I am only lying to an algorithm, I tell myself.

When I meet them and they can see how lovely I look, I’ll come clean. The rank injustice of it makes me want to run round screaming.

People also speak in code. Men want tactile soulmates, it seems. I find this off-putting; are they proposing to stare meaningfully into my eyes and then feel me up in public? I later realize that this means they like sex, and the soulmate part means that they’d prefer to quite like the woman too.

The Times Dating Site: Encounters

A friend of mine recommends Encounters, a site for Times readers, so I subscribe on the basis that the men will be likely to be older and intelligent if not necessarily tall. There are loads more men than the Muddy ones. Lots more men from London. Lots more odd people, including a Mr Grey who wants to spank us.

I am not very keen on dating men from London. Probably unfair, but I feel that there is too much competition. Too many young women from Eastern Europe with great bodies, small bank balances, trick pelvises (probably) and 30 years on me. I won’t stand a chance.

Messages from all my favorites on Muddy Matches roll in. Not. There is one from a toothless man in his seventies in my inbox and I am still waiting for handsome, Aga-owning Nobby to get back to me.

You need to learn a new language. Find out how the sites work before you start. The odds are stacked against you if you are female and older. But, life isn’t fair, and you just have to get over it.

Louis C.K. Debuts New Special Online Before Going On Hiatus

Louis C.K. announced Friday that he’ll be taking an “extended hiatus” from his much-loved series “Louie” in order to pursue other projects. But Saturday, the comic revealed a consolation prize for fans: He’s released a new special on his website called “Live at Madison Square Garden.”

Sure, it’s not all-new material. Some of the Madison Square Garden show, he explained in a letter to fans, was repeated from his last special, “Live at the Comedy Store.” BUT some of it wasn’t. So if you didn’t make it to New York City to watch any of the last three shows he did at MSG — most of you, probably — parts of it will be new to you. It costs whatever you feel like paying, anywhere from $ 1 to $ 85.

Louis C.K. continued on in his letter to let us know he’s having a good summer, and feels pretty good about the world, even though parts of it are “a huge mess.”

“I hope you’re all relatively okay or better,” he wrote. “I hope that nobody shoots anybody today. What are the odds of that? Low. But I hope it.” Same.

Online Retailer Advertises Plus-Size Leggings In A Truly Awful Way

No, no, no, no, no.

Shopping is a daunting experience. Shopping for plus-size clothing can be even more so. When a retailer screws up and say, unfortunately mislabels a product, it’s downright exhausting.

Herry He’s Store, a China-based retailer sold on Aliexpress.com, is the most recent offender. Instead of making what might have been the obvious choice (using a model that actually fits into the leggings), instead, the store had a thin woman squeeze both her legs into one pant leg. Yes, really.

As Mic writer Michelle Garcia pointed out, it’s not as if the brand didn’t have access to a larger model. Additional photos show the pants displayed on a person that appears to wear one leg on each side. “It wasn’t enough to just show this larger model wearing these pants?” she asked.

The photos not only misrepresent what the product would actually look like on someone if they purchased them, but they are a pretty lousy sales tactic, too. We’re not sure who would jump on the opportunity to buy a pair of leggings that is basically saying: check out this skinny woman who could wear one half of your pants on both legs!

The Huffington Post reached out to Herry He’s Store for comment and did not hear back by the time of publication.

7 Mistakes You’re Probably Making On Your Online Dating Profile

Having no luck getting a decent guy or woman to message you on online dating sites? We hate to say it, but it may be because the profile you’ve created is unremarkable. (Hey, you’ve been in a relationship for years — possibly even decades; there was no need to master the art of the perfect Match.com profile.)

To help you land a date, we asked a handful of dating experts and coaches to weigh in with the most common mistakes they see divorcées making in their profiles.

Read what they had to say – and their advice on how to write a better profile — below:

1. Your profile picture is less than flattering.

Online daters wade through hundreds and hundreds profiles to find one person worth meeting for coffee. Of course they’re making snap judgments about you based solely on your profile photo. That grainy, low-res photo you uploaded from Facebook isn’t doing you any favors – and don’t even think about posting a pic from five years ago.

“Every photo sends a message,” said dating and relationship expert Damona Hoffman. “Don’t think you need to post a photo from back in the day that’s overly sexy to get a date. With clever cropping and your best angle, you can direct people’s eyes to exactly what you want them to notice about you.”

To get casual, totally flattering profile photos, Jeffrey Platts — a dating expert and men’s coach based in L.A. — recommends having a friend snap photos of you any time you’re feeling “sexy, confident and well-dressed” while hanging out.

“It just takes 30 seconds and you’ll be adding to your collection of great photos to choose from,” he said.

2.  You’re boring people to tears in your “about me” section.

Your front-facing, model status profile pic may be what draws people in, but a compelling “about me” section that shows off your personality is what will land you a date. Describing yourself as a “laid-back guy who loves the beach and getting drinks” is the meh-est of meh descriptions.

“That pretty much describes 99 percent of singles,” said Platts. “If I tell you I’m going to buy you any smartphone you want, you wouldn’t just say ‘Thanks, just get me one that makes calls and can surf the web.’ No, you’d tell me get the a 64GB iPhone 6 Plus in white. You want someone to want you because of you, not simply because you’re a warm-bodied male or female.”

To spice up your profile, Platt suggests injecting some humor and personality into it: “Then people who share similar values, interests and lifestyles will gravitate toward you.”

3. Mentioning your ex — or any other failed relationships.

This should go without saying: Don’t bring up your ex or other low-points in your romantic history. Divorce may have taught you what you categorically don’t want in a new partner, but don’t waste valuable space in your profile listing out negative traits you don’t want in your life.  Surprisingly, it’s something Laurie Davis, founder of online dating concierge service eFlirt, said she sees all the time while doctoring the dating profiles of divorcées.

“It sets a negative tone for your profile — not the most attractive quality to lead with!” she said, “It’s best to keep your last relationship, and all the baggage that came with it, out of your first impression.”

4. Your word count is out of control.

Adopt the Goldilocks principle when considering the length of your profile: Not too short, not too long, but just right. You want to tell a story about yourself that’s intriguing but leave the whole story for the dates to come.

“Say just enough in your profile to get them to want to meet in person and reveal the rest there,” said Hoffman.

5. Your username is forgettable.

Sorry, SexyLady432 and Soccerfan1973, but you may want to rethink that username. What you call yourself won’t likely be a deal-breaker for most but it’s worth taking the time to come up with something original and more grown-up than the examples above, said Platt.

“Look, I know that as more and more people sign up for online dating sites, the good usernames get swapped up but there’s still room for creativity and personality,” he said. “Test out several variations until you come up with one that you like and is available. You can always try lumberjackyogi and crossfitqueen.”

6.  You post pics of your kids or talk endlessly about being a parent.

Your kids may be adorable, Honor Roll-making angels but that doesn’t mean they should be the stars of your dating profile. While it’s natural to include details about your kids or life as a parent in your profile, you don’t want to overdo it — and you definitely don’t want to include pics of the kids, Davis said.

“Even if the photos with the kids are simply the most flattering, I’ve’ found that what works best is to keep the focus on you, and you alone, in your photos,” she said. “Crop out the others around you, in particular children.”

7.  You send an awkward first message.

You now have the tools to write a profile that hits all the right marks, but remember: all the hard work you put into your profile can be upended if you send inappropriate messages to people you’re interested in. A mere “hi” or “hey baby” aren’t likely to go over well.

To ensure you’re sending an initial message that won’t offend or bore people, Platt recommends putting it through a “would I ever say this in real life?” litmus test.

“Imagine going up to someone at a bar, saying ‘hi’ and just standing there silently. You wouldn’t, so why do the same thing virtually? And women (and men) get literally hundreds of these messages. I’ve yet to meet a woman who has written back to an initial one-word message.”

To knock it out of the park with your first message, Platt said to “Write something that shows you actually read their profile. And the easiest way to do that is directly mention something that he or she wrote about and ask them a genuinely curious question about it.”

In a sea of “hi” and “hey babys,” Platt said you’re sure to stand out.

Kanye West’s “All Day/I Feel Like That” Video Leaks Online

No matter how exclusive your event may be, the internet will always find a way to leak online. That’s pretty much what happened to Kanye West today. According to Fake Shore Drive, someone was able to sneak a camera into the premiere of his video for “All Day/ I Feel Like That”. The Los Angeles event was so exclusive that many people were not permitted to bring any recording devices.

Although that video was later removed, DDotOmen ended up getting the official video available for fans.

News in Brief: Online University Allows Students To Amass Crippling Debt At Own Pace

SAN DIEGO—Touting its wide range of financially ruinous academic programs that can be tailored to meet anyone’s scheduling needs, officials at Enterprise College announced Monday that the online institution is committed to letting students amass a crippling amount of debt at their own individual pace. “Even if you work full-time and are busy raising a family, Enterprise College’s flexible courses make it easy to get back to school and take out enough student loans to completely devastate your personal finances for years to come,” said spokesperson Kerri Williams, describing how the for-profit college accommodates those who prefer to rack up their overwhelming debt a few thousand dollars at a time as well as those who would rather just plunge $ 30,000 into the red in two short years. “At Enterprise College, you can take as long as you need to acquire your impossible-to-shoulder burden, and with more …

What Happens When Your Bestie Writes Your Online Dating Profile

No one knows you better than your best friend. (Seriously, if you ever became famous and the two of you had a falling out, he or she could write a killer tell-all book about you.)

So given all your friend knows, would you let him or her craft your online dating profile? In the BuzzFeed video above, intrepid singles give their besties complete control over their “about me” sections.

“Bump everything up,” one woman advises her friend. “Don’t put tall, put supermodel tall.”

“Supermodel tall, supermodel funny,” her friend types.

In the end, most of the singles have high hopes for their new, BFF-approved profiles.

“She’s putting so much more thought into this than I do in my regular profiles,” one guy says. “I think I’ll get better matches because she was more honest about who I am than I usually am.”

Blogger Takes Off Her Makeup To Reveal The Ugly Truth About Online Harassment

You look disgusting.

That’s the title of beauty blogger Em Ford’s latest YouTube video, a three-minute feature that’s about far more than lipstick and mascara.

Ford, a 20-something from London who suffers from adult acne, has been posting photos of herself without makeup for the past three months. In the video, she washes off her makeup to highlight the disturbing online harassment she faces. She includes a smattering of the horrible comments she receives on social media daily, like “ugly,” “revolting,” and “I can’t even look at her.”

She decided to share the video in an attempt to challenge societal preconceptions of beauty.

“Over the past few months, I’ve received thousands of messages from people all over the world who suffer or have suffered from acne, an insecurity or self confidence issues,” she wrote on her blog, My Pale Skin. “I wanted to create a film that showed how social media can set unrealistic expectations on both women and men. One challenge many face today, is that as a society, we’re so used to seeing false images of perfection, and comparing ourselves to unrealistic beauty standards that It can be hard to remember the most important thing — You ARE beautiful.”

The video has racked up over 400,000 views since it was posted on Wednesday.

Prince pulls music from most online streaming services

US singer PrincePop icon Prince has opened a new chapter in his fraught relationship with the Internet as he suddenly pulled his music from most streaming services. The sole streaming service that still carried the "Purple Rain" legend's music as of early Thursday was Tidal, which was re-launched this year by rap mogul Jay Z. It streamed much of a peace concert held by Prince in May in Baltimore in the wake of the death of an African American man in police custody.

30 Days of Online Dating: Wherein I Explore the Art of the Third-Night Stand

This is a modern dating experiment. One girl. Five dating sites. Hundreds of chats. Thirty days. Thirty dates. Eighteen guys. (?) boyfriend. To start at the beginning, click here — or jump right in at date twenty-five below.

Date 25/30: Tinder James*

TJ: Would you be up for doing something in Manhattan Beach Friday night?

Translation: Would you be up for doing me in Manhattan Beach Friday night. Heyo. Reading right between those well-spaced lines, Tinder James.

AHERHEROIESJRSEJJKAWHEJKAH. I’m not really the one-night stand kind of girl. (Not that I think there’s anything wrong with being the one-night stand kind of girl…it’s juuust not really my MO.) Granted, this is our third date, but it still sort of feels like the same thing. With TJ’s half-baked plans and could-be-(much)(much)-better conversation, I don’t really see a date four in our future. Alas, this whole experiment was about opening myself up to new experiences**, sooooo South Bay here I come! (Sorry, Mom.)

I tell TJ to expect me around 8p.

TJ: Okay. I’m going to get cleaned up. You can park at my place and we can head out from here. Cool?

Absolutely. Not even pretending to meet somewhere else. Really digging the efficiency here.

8:03p: I arrive in Manhattan Beach.

8:07p: I circle the block for the third time, still searching for the address. My GPS continues its campaign for most useless navigation device of the year.

2015-06-05-1433546366-8081259-nav.png

If I could use the map to navigate to this destination, I wouldn’t be asking you, now would I. UGH.

8:10p: TJ is guiding me into the incredibly tiny driveway from his vantage point in the window above. No, really, don’t come down.

8:14p: I am met in the entryway, already itching for a spirited beverage of some sort. Fun fact: Long distance drives do not make anything grow fonder.

TJ: Are you hungry?

I mean, I haven’t eaten yet, if that’s what you’re asking.

Please see fun fact above regarding distance/general attitude on life.

We walk down to Pisces Sushi on Highland, where we have an almost average conversation over sushi, sake, and Sapporos.

Might need something a little stronger to make this happen.

We stroll down to a little dive bar. Well, I should specify, we stroll down the street and stand on the corner for a solid six minutes, debating where to go. This is your hood, TJ — call an audible. Please make something audible. (His voice hasn’t gotten any louder since our last date. I still don’t understand how a voice can be so consistently soundless.)

He settles on OB’s Pub & Grill. Sawdust on the floor, peanuts on the table, and remarkably stiff cocktails a mere order away. Divine. And somehow perfectly appropriate for the evening at hand.

Two loaded cocktails later, TJ finally starts to open up — about his anger management issues and penchant for bar fights. Ho-kay. Maybe we should go back to that less conversation thing. He also hates his roommate, so I have that to look forward to when we get back to his place. Thank you, Jesus, for bolding and italicizing the expiration date on this one.

We stop at a liquor store on the way back to grab, well, more liquor. Because, you know, our souls are so compatible and stuff.

Everything goes pretty much as expected from here on out — except for the part where he insists on carrying all 118*** lbs of me from the couch to the boudoir. Thirty feet away. Seriously, man, I can walk. This is so awkward. (Currently regretting every peanut.)

The next morning, he’s fixing me a cup of tea, I’m fixing to leave, and my BlackBerry has found itself in a fix. It’s dead. In all the excitement over my one-way trip to Ho-ville, I neglected to charge my precious phone/I’m supposed to be meeting up with friends and sort of need the address of where that meeting spot is. Cue: One of the more excruciating hours of my life. LINGER LINGER LINGER.

Later that evening, I’m at dinner with one of my guy friends:

Me: Dude. My ABS. So much pain. WTF did I do to them.
GF: Hahahaha. From all the SEX you had last night. You’ve got to get yourself in sex shape, girl.

He then theorizes logistics, landing on what he believes to be the exact play-by-play of my ab-ripping rumble in the heyyyy. Really happy he’s finding so much pleasure in my pain. Really happy all of our mutual friends are finding so much pleasure in my pain. (GF thought this landmark event was 100 percent deserving of a group text announcement.) (I need new friends.)

Tinder James would text weather nonsensicals for a couple days and send a status check one week later.

TJ: Hey, how was your week and weekend?

And scene.

*Not his real name
**Is that what this experiment was all about? I can barely remember anymore. (Also, heyo.)

Men’s 6 Pet Peeves About Middle-Aged Women’s Online Dating Profiles

2015-06-06-1433577878-636944-898173148816530425.jpg

Last week I shared my six pet peeves about middle-aged men’s online dating profiles, and I promised everyone that this week I’d focus on middle-aged women’s online dating profiles. Since I’m far more familiar with men’s profiles, I recruited some of my single male friends (and the Twittersphere) to help me with this post. The following list is my best attempt at summarizing the results of my informal survey, with a few of my own observations based on a bit of research I conducted myself. Disclaimer: if you’re a woman between the ages of 45 and 60, living in the Chicagoland area, and I popped up on your “Viewed Me” list, I’m sorry, really. Anyway, here goes:

  1. Waaaay too Many Pet Photos. This was a huge complaint among the men I interviewed. They are looking at your profile to learn more about you, not your pets. So delete the pet photos, particularly the ones without you in them. Oh and while we’re on the topic of pet photos, I have a personal request of all you single, middle-aged women out there on dating websites: please, please, please delete any and all photos of your cats. This is so important. I can’t emphasize it enough. Single, middle-aged women already have to deal with far too many negative stereotypes, and the cat photos (you cuddling with your cats, you kissing your cats, multiple cats on your bed) only serve to reinforce them. I once wrote a blog post about how dating sometimes made me feel undesirable, and I got hundreds of comments from single middle-aged men throughout all of North America informing me that I must live in a dark apartment with 100 or so cats, so really, please delete them.
  2. No. More. Instagram. Photos. I love Instagram photos because many of the filters make my eyes look strikingly blue (or green, or lavender), and some even shave about 10 years off my face. But do I post these photos on my online dating profile? No I do not. Why? Because my eyes aren’t really that blue (or green or lavender), and I’m about 10 years older than my Instagram photos would have you believe. This was the number one complaint among the men I interviewed – artistically filtered (i.e., deceptive) photos. Truth in advertising ladies, truth in advertising.
  3. Looking for Your Knight in Shining Armor. I’m not sure if men have an issue with this one, but I find it a tad bit, well, exploitative when women don’t list an occupation or income level, and yet have a lower income limit for men of $ 150,000 per year. C’mon now, it’s 2015. Let’s put our interests and actions where our collective feminist mouths are. Gender equity means we are financially responsible for ourselves. Period.
  4. Athletic and Toned Means, well, Athletic and Toned. I hate the body descriptors as much as you do (well, except for you size 0 women out there, you probably love them), but I do think it’s important that we at least strive for honesty. The word on the street is that far too many women out there in the online dating world are using the “athletic and toned” descriptor in reference to their “about average” bodies (this complaint applies to men as well, of course). The thing is, there really isn’t anything wrong with having an about average (or curvy) body so let’s take the pressure off ourselves and heed the advice of Amy Schuler, and recognize once and for all that a little meat on our bones isn’t going to kill us, and it isn’t going to drive away the good guys either (right, good guys?).
  5. Tone Down the Boudoir Shots. You say you want a quality man who respects you as a human being and is interested in having a serious relationship with you, and then you post photos of yourself next to your bed (or on your bed, or in your bed, or in someone else’s bed). And if you aren’t posting photos of yourself next to your bed, (or on your bed, or in your bed), you’re posting photos with far too much cleavage. Now, that’s absolutely fine — I have no problem at all with this, and I’m sure many men don’t have a problem either — but what some men do have a problem with is when women post said super-sexy glamour shots and then complain to their friends, or make statements on their profiles about how all men are dogs and only want them for sex. And while we’re on the subject of complaint-filled profiles…
  6. Stop Using Your Profile to Complain about Men. Several men noted how many women’s online dating profiles are comprised primarily of complaints about men – either their profiles, or their behavior in general. I agree with the men on this one. There is no point in using your profile narrative as a soapbox for your negative perception of all single, middle-aged men (for heaven’s sakes use a blog for that). So while I’m certain there are men (and women) out there who are logged on and behaving badly, I believe that women must take responsibility for their own choices. We can maintain our positive expectations while at the same time heeding our inner voice that warns us when something isn’t quite right. Far too often some women are guided not by common sense, but by wishful thinking and a desire to be nice and not appear rude, so we ignore the big, red flashing warning lights raging in our heads and proceed without caution. I once met a woman who expressed great sadness that she just couldn’t trust the men she met online. She then proceeded to tell me a story about one of these men who spent days (yes, days) wooing her via email. He told her stories of his limitless wealth and his connections to powerful people all over the world. She slept with him on the second date (after he promised to whisk her off to a private island that next weekend). But that’s not all. She also gave him all of her identifying information when he told her that she needed to be vetted by “his people.” And guess what? Yep! Her identity was stolen. Complaining about how she could just no longer trust men she met online was a bit like complaining about how she could just no longer trust Nigerian princes.

One more thing. I would like to ask all of my middle-aged online dating male and female compatriots a favor. Please, let’s rid our profiles of these overused phrases once and for all: glass-half-full, sensual, drama-free, and easygoing. And these, let’s omit these too: “I look 10 years younger than I am,” “I hate talking about myself, but…” and any and all derivatives of “my friends/mom/ex/kids tell me that …I’m a glass-half-full optimist, who is easy going and looks 10 years younger than I am.” I think that if we can all agree to clean up our profiles then maybe, just maybe, we can find some common ground and get back to the business of falling in love (or at least having fun trying).

5 Steps That Will Make You Love Online Dating Over 50

When I first started dating in my mid 40s, I had no clue what to do when it came to navigating the world of online dating sites.

I look back and wince at how often I allowed men to make me their email pal or phone pal. The worst part is, I was thrilled by it. You see, I figured they picked me out of every other woman to speak with. So in return, it was my duty to let them yak for hours about themselves and their days.

Night after night, I’d think I was doing the right thing. But guess what … No date ever came out of a single one of those nighttime talkers.

I had to learn the hard way how to set boundaries and move interesting men through the process to get first and second dates with them. I don’t want you to have to learn the hard way. Take the tips in these five steps to move from, “Oh, he looks cute,” to “Yes, I’d like to go out with you again!”

Step 1: Don’t choose ‘the one’ based on what you see online.

Some men look great on paper, don’t they? Then you meet them in person and you think, “What happened to the one I thought was so great online? Where is that guy?”

This happens because you paint a picture in your mind of who someone might be based on a couple of paragraphs and a small profile picture. More than likely, he isn’t that person and you’ve set yourself up for being disappointed when he’s not who you thought he was.

Try and leave out any expectations and pictures of who you think a man might be until you’ve actually met him.

Step 2: Making contact.

I usually recommend you let men contact you. I always found it fizzled when I was the first to get the ball rolling.

Now that being said, I know of two very good relationships where the woman contacted the man first.

It’s worth a try if you are really interested in a man, but make sure you aren’t attached to whether or not he writes you back.

Keep emails to a maximum of three to five each between you. Beyond that, you are becoming his pen pal. You really want to take it to next step fairly quickly.

Step 3: Using the phone to your advantage.

I recommend limiting phone conversations to one to three at the most. Limiting the number of calls keeps you from endless nights on the phone that go nowhere.

This gives you the opportunity to screen a man. If you choose to meet without this step, you could be quite surprised by who shows up.

I remember a date with a guy who asked me to meet him at an ice cream shop. I thought it was a cute idea. The problem was, he had no job and no money for dating, so no ice cream!

I would have found that out if I’d spent some time on the phone with him before meeting him.

It really is worth squeezing in at least one call to see if he has any obvious deal breaker qualities so you aren’t wasting your time on the next step.

Step 4: Taking it to the first date.

So he sounds nice on the phone. Now it’s time to get off the phone and meet in person.

I like meeting for coffee or tea. A meal is great but it can be very long and you have to be at your best for at least an hour. It’s exhausting, and it leads to feeling worn down by dating.

Meeting at a coffee shop can be short and sweet and you can be out of there within half an hour or less once your beverage is done.

If the date is going well … you can take it to a meal but I do suggest limiting first dates to less than two hours. Leave some mystery and intrigue for next time.

Step 5: Getting that elusive second date.

You’ve painted a picture of him in your head, and guess what… He’s done the same thing about the woman he wants and if you don’t fit that picture, a second date is not going to be in the cards.

Try and remember, it’s not about you! It’s about him and his idea of who he wants.

Women do the same thing. Think of all the guys you have turned down because they didn’t fit your picture of Mr. Right.

Try and view every date as a way to get to know someone new and interesting. And promise me this: if he doesn’t ask you out again, don’t write, text or call him.

Move on to the next guy because your goal is to have someone who wants you in his life. When you think about it, do you really want a guy you have to push to ask you out again?

The Dos And Don’ts Of Writing An Online Dating Profile

2015-05-20-1432121097-7789267-design17.jpg

There is such a lot of conflicting advice out there on how to write your online dating profile. And let’s be honest, it is important to get it right. I’ve found it helpful to think about your profile rather like a cross between a CV and a great piece of PR. Does that sound tough? Well, if you want to stand out from everyone else online then it’s well worth spending some time thinking about what you want to say and how you want to come across to potential dates. It’s not about making things up but it is about thinking creatively. It’s about showing rather than telling. Nobody wants to read yet another profile about loving country walks, watching films curled up on the sofa, having a good sense of humor …. yawn!

With a good few years dating experience behind me and now with the wonderful job of helping people create an Irresistible Dating Profile these are the dos and don’ts of profile writing that I’ve learned.

The Dos

  • Facts not fiction — if you are a couch potato don’t talk about your fitness schedule … unless you’re looking for someone to help you off the couch.
  • Do be happy to stand out — celebrate your unique qualities.
  • Be interesting — what’s the most interesting thing about you?
  • Be succinct — not quite Twitter-like but make your profile snappy.
  • Be specific — instead of saying ‘enjoy Friday nights out in the bar’ say ‘Friday evenings I can be found enjoying Cabernet Sauvignon with my oldest friends, catching up on each other’s latest adventures.’
  • Paint a picture of your life — fitness might be important to you (and 2 million others) so say more — you get your annual skiing fix in Boulder Colorado, you’re working towards the next Ironman.
  • Be different — share your unique hobbies or leisure activities. Stand out. Free diving, growing bonsai trees or burlesque dancing … share it!
  • Be playful with your username and headline — create a hook. You want possible matches curious to know more.
  • Do share some of your values — talk about those things that are important to you in life, you’re more likely to attract those who are compatible.
  • Make sure you’re in a great frame of mind before you write your profile — play your happy music and wear your lucky t-shirt.
  • Give details — If you say you love music, say which band and when you last saw them. If you love cooking say why and who inspires you. If you love gardening say how it makes you feel … You get the picture?

The Don’ts

  • Don’t be shy and uncertain about yourself. Go easy on the self deprecation.
  • Don’t tell lies, however minor because you will be found out! And a relationship that begins with a lie will not recover. If you’re 43 don’t say you’re 38. Just don’t.
  • Don’t make demands on the type of person you’re looking for … this is not a shopping list. Don’t start a sentence with, “you must be…” or, “I’ll only date someone who is…” Get over yourself!
  • Don’t be a victim. Don’t badmouth your ex and don’t talk about dating disasters. It’s not nice.
  • Don’t TELL what a cool person you are. Instead SHOW by sharing some great stories of adventures or a snapshot of your life.
  • Don’t start each sentence with “I” … that’s boring. Mix it up a little. Instead of “I love cycling and went to Paris to watch the final stage of the Tour de France. It was brilliant” How about, “Standing on the Champs Elysée for the final stage of the Tour de France was a dream come true for the avid cyclist I am. Being surrounded by so many likeminded people was inspiring.”
  • Don’t go on about things you dislike. It’s not attractive
  • Don’t go overboard on exclamation marks, emoticons. You’re not a teenager.
  • Don’t be afraid to say what you want. Looking for a life partner? Say it.
  • Don’t be lame — ‘my friends made me sign up’, ‘I don’t know what to write’, ‘my character? Don’t know really but my friends say I’m fun to be around’ … pleease…just don’t do it!

If you use these as pointers when you’re writing your profile you will stand out … that’s a promise! I love that I now get time with amazing people guiding them to creating a stand out dating profile. If you’d like some one-to-one support take a look and see how I could help you.

My Cyber Dance Card Is Empty: Online Dating After 40

Recently I met a single girlfriend for coffee and she bitched, “Jesus, this online dating thing is like having a part-time job. I can’t manage all the emails. I have to use descriptive code names to keep them straight: 90 degrees, Firepower, Beard of Love, Jagger Tongue and Hairless Harry. But-“

“What’s the 90 degrees stand for?” I interrupted.

“He’s got a curved –“

“Really? A right angle? I’d like to see that.”

I cringed as she complained about being overwhelmed with dates. That hasn’t been my experience. There’s no line of single men wrapped around my cyberblock. “Yeah…I don’t know,” I confessed, “I think it’s time for me to throw in the towel on the whole online dating thing and go back to wearing comfy undies.”

“Don’t do that. You need to get out. Be seen. Have fun. You can’t spend every Friday and Saturday night in your bathrobe watching HGTV.”

“I’m all for having fun, but the online thing never works for me. One weirdo insisted I send him a selfie on the scale to verify I have curves, not rolls. Another said he was divorced when he wasn’t. One creep’s opening line was, “So…what’s your favorite line in The Hobbit?” I might just buy a Snuggie, a Slurpie punch card, and adopt seven or eight cats,” I said.

“Lemme see your profile,” she insisted.

I thought it was pretty decent. After all, I’m a writer. I sounded smart, creative and kinda funny. But after careful examination, I realized it read more like an ad for a rescue dog: friendly, outgoing, dependable, and loyal. It may have been code for: please take me home, pant, pant… I’m desperate…pant, pant. The only thing missing: great at licking balls.

My friend was adamant, “Men are looking for a sexy, confident woman, not a lonely pup from the pound. Simply bedazzle your profile. Add stuff like: former gymnast, culinary whiz specializing in aphrodisiacs, and financially independent Victoria’s Secret hoarder.”

“Yeah, but that’s a bunch of bull. I’m not all those things,” I said.

“Right,” she said, “but who cares? You only need to sound interesting. You don’t need to actually be interesting.”

“Oh God,” she moaned, continuing to read my profile. “Epic fail here. You can’t mention you’ve got three boys.”

“But I have three boys–“

“Well, you don’t need to brag about it. Kids are a turn off. The mother-thing is a drag.”

“The mother-thing? Most men have their own children.”

“News flash: divorced 45 year-old men don’t want to date 45 year-old moms. They want women in their 20s and 30s. Younger women — even if they have six kids. In fact, 50-60 year-old men want women in their 20s and 30s, too. I suppose some older men might settle for a 45 year-old.”

“Settle? Jesus, don’t hold back.”

“Yeah, well, this is the shit people don’t tell you when you get divorced.”

“You see,” she continued, “for the most part, men 55 – 65, the ones who might have an interest in you, have grown children. They don’t wanna carry your lawn chair to soccer games, spend Saturdays at swim meets or help with homework on school nights. They rode that roller coaster with their first wives. You need to appear flexible, carefree, and able to travel on a whim. They won’t invite you to the BVI or Vail if you’ve got three kids. They want a playmate, not a second family to raise.”

“So, let me get this straight,” I said. “I should fake that I don’t have kids in order to get dates with men who have kids, who I’ll eventually have to stop dating because I have kids.”

My friend bit her lip and tapped her fingernail on the table. “Yeah,” she said, “basically you’re screwed. Good thing you have a dog.”

Online Dating Survey: Single Moms Are Finding Love 10% Faster

This Mother’s Day, online dating site PlentyOfFish polled over 1000 single mothers between the ages of 19-50 with children under 18 years old.

So let’s look at the online dating behaviors of single moms and what their children think of their dates. If you think being a single mom reduces your chance of finding love online, this is a misconception among many others.

This survey revealed that 44% of women dating are line are single moms and their reasons for going online and what they’re looking for may surprise you. With almost 28% of single moms admitting they’ve been dating online for over three years, this survey states that they might not be looking for a knight in white armor.

What’s exciting for single moms, it is turns out they’re finding love 10% faster than women without children at home and turns out that 43% of the survey respondents said they started dating online after hearing success stories. And Does this mean you should post photos of your children in your online dating profile? As an online dating expert and dating coach, I’m not a fan of having your children appear as your primary profile photo, but believe it’s important to state within the text portion of your profile that you’re proud of your children (and list their ages). It turns out that an overwhelming 76% of single moms do indeed mention their children and/or post photos of them in their profiles.

2015-05-05-1430860837-8993740-POFMothersDaySurveyChart5updated.png

According to POF:

Like many online daters, single mothers are looking for partners they can relate to. Accordingly, they are 3.4 times more likely to date a single father than childless women are. In contrast, single moms are half as likely to date childless men as women with no children are.

But what do the kids have to say about their mom’s dates?

According to POF, 63% of moms said they’d consider their child’s disapproval of a potential partner as a major red flag or a deal-breaker.

Other key findings include:

  • 53.99% said that online dating allowed them to get to know someone without sacrificing time with their kid(s).

This Is How It Plays Out When An Online Romance Fizzles IRL

On tonight’s ‘Catfish,’ one person’s virtual feelings didn’t translate to a real-life romance.
News

Widow Says She’s In Love With Online Suitor; Stepdaughter Believes It’s A $200,000+ Scam

Seventy-year-old Kaye recalls meeting “Aaron,” the man she now calls “the love of my life,” on a dating website in March 2014. “The first time I heard his voice, it was like fireworks went off,” she says. “When he says I love you, it just gives you chills.”

Kaye says they’ve been “dating” for a little over a year, although they’ve never met in person. But she says that doesn’t bother her and that she can’t wait to marry “Aaron” — who she says is a retired airline engineer, aviation instructor and entrepreneur — as soon as he returns from the United Kingdom, where, as she explains, he claims he is stuck dealing with “business issues.” Eager to help him, Kaye admits she has sent “Aaron” thousands of dollars.

“I know in my heart, I believe it with everything I have within me, that he will be here,” Kaye says. “I don’t know when, but he will be here.”

But Kaye’s stepdaughter, Kathy, says she doesn’t believe “Aaron” really exists — and she’s concerned her stepmother is being scammed to the tune of $ 200,000.

“My stepmother, Kaye, was like a mother to me. I spent every day with my mother until this ‘Aaron’ guy came along,” Kathy says. She claims that she learned from others that her mom was marrying “Aaron” and was devastated. “I cried and cried and asked her why she didn’t tell me. She got very rude and told me I was nothing to her. It was none of my business. I knew something was drastically wrong.”

10 Clues Your Online Lover Could Be A Scam Artist

Kathy shares why she believes her mother is being duped. “In one breath she told me she met ‘Aaron’, and in the next breath she said she had never met ‘Aaron.’ I knew right then this person was scamming her,” she says. “I became very suspicious that my mother was giving ‘Aaron’ money, because she was selling my dad’s belongings. My mother finally admitted two weeks ago that she was sending all this money to ‘Aaron.’”

Kathy turns to Dr. Phil for help saying, “I want this man out of her life totally and completely forever.”

Watch the video above as the women come face to face, and see more from the show here. And, on Friday, Dr. Phil tries to unravel the mystery and find out who “Aaron” really is and if Kaye may be getting scammed.

30 Days of Online Dating: Stuck in the Friend Zone

This is a modern dating experiment. One girl. Five dating sites. Hundreds of chats. Thirty days. Thirty dates. Eighteen guys. (?) boyfriend. To start at the beginning, click here — or jump right in at date nineteen below.

Date 19/30: Friend Zone Ryan*

In the midst of my experiment, who should appear, but a blast from the not-so-distant past. Friend Zone Ryan and I have been pals for a few years now, starting back when we used to be neighbors-ish. We sort of hooked up a couple times that first summer, with me pumping the brakes pretty swiftly. FZR stopped trying and I proceeded to pine away. Because there’s nothing more addictive than that oscillating trifecta of affection, ambivalence, and disinterest.

A few months ago, he skipped my birthday for a stupid reason and I decided we weren’t friends anymore. The next week, I ran into him at a mutual friend’s party and decided his reason was totally valid and we were totally still friends. A few shots, one very platonic sleepover, and a room service brunch later, FZR was dropping me off at home, saying he was going to take me out for a birthday dinner.

And then I never heard from him. We were so not friends anymore.

Until last Monday.

Walking home from a writing session, I hear my name being shouted from a familiar vehicle. Oh, hello stranger. Brief catch-up sesh. We’re still friends.

FZR: I still owe you dinner!
Me: Oh, that’s right – you totally do. [So much nonchalance.]
FZR: Just let me know when and where…

He continues on to his office; I head back home. We may still be friends, but I have zero expectation of a follow-up to this conversation.

A few hours later…

FZR: Where/when are we dining?

Well, color me surprised.

I slot him in for Thursday (So weird how calendar space can open up like that!) and suggest a smattering of restaurants that run the gamut from casual/trendy to fine dining. He makes a reservation at Hatfield’s — or, as the LA Times termed it back in 2010, a gracious restaurant for grownups. Look, Ma — I’m a grownup!

Really excited for this best friends forever reunion dinner. Right? This is a friend thing. Totally a friend thing. Not a date. Why would it be a date? That’d be weird. Gross. No way.

…I’m a child.

FZR’s house is pretty dead center between my place and Hatfield’s, so he sends an Uber to grab me, with further instructions to swoop him up en route. Belted in the backseat, it doesn’t take FZR long to inquire about my personal life. I pause. We’ve never really talked about our personal lives before. Is this his way of making it clear that this is a BFF situation? Or is this him attempting to get a clearer view of the landscape before the night’s momentum kicks in?

I decide he’s asking because he heard about my 30 Days of Online Dating from one of our mutual friends, and is just trying to make conversation without coming off like a stalker. I delve in real deep to the stories of my multiple suitors. He hadn’t heard about my project. Oh, that’s cool. NBD. This is just me cementing my feet in the friendliest of areas.

FZR is all manners and charm every step of the way, as per usual. Be still my etiquette-obsessed heart. We cozily settle into the back corner table — my favorite spot in almost every restaurant. (Feel free to pocket that piece of information for future use, gentlemen.)

Over the Croque Madame, we chat recent trips, etc. Just a month before, I had travelled to his hometown for the very first time. “Why didn’t you tell me you were going?” Because you said you were going to take me to dinner and then you never called, so I decided we definitely weren’t friends anymore? In lieu of way too much truth, I fumble out something about not knowing why I didn’t, but I should have, and would absolutely hit him up for the phone-guided tour next time around.

Thankfully, the next course arrives to alleviate my awkward. Momentarily. Just as I’m about to take a bite of buttery black cod, FZR launches into a story about a girl he was recently set up with by a friend of ours. Apparently, she is just as smart and witty as I am, and he totally f*cked it up. Of course she is. Of course you did. Did I mention this cod is delicious? The topic of my brainy twin somehow bleeds into 50 Shades of Grey, a book I have not read and refuse to endorse. FZR says he has encountered more than a few senoritas suffering from post-Christian Grey syndrome — they come into the bedroom hot, but not necessarily in a good way. Oh man! All this talk of whores has me dying for another cocktail.

We’re still friends. Just friends.

The LA Times said we were not to miss Hatfield’s “sugar and spice beignets shaped like soft little pillows and served warm with a complex Venezuelan chocolate fondue and a charming milkshake shot dressed up with preserved ginger”. So we don’t. FZR immediately spills the charming milkshake shot, attempting to slice into one of those soft-ish pillows. The server’s there in seconds to clean it up, assuring us that it happens all the time.

FZR: Thank you for that; I appreciate you trying to make me look better in front of her. Isn’t she the best date ever — didn’t even skip a beat.

My pathetically slutty lashes flutter at the D word. Calm yourself, children; it’s merely a polite turn of phrase. Seriously, stop that. You’re making us all look bad.

We Uber me home; FZR walks me to my door; we say goodbyes.

FZR: If you feel like going out and getting really drunk, you know who to call.

Right. Yes. Yes, I do. I might just go ahead and wait a few weeks for my dignity to piece itself together, though, if that’s cool with everyone.

We’re still totally friends.**

**We really are, though. FZR, if you’re reading this — don’t make it weird.

30 Days of Online Dating: I Didn’t Mean to Say Yes

This is a modern dating experiment. One girl. Five dating sites. Hundreds of chats. Thirty days. Thirty dates. Eighteen guys. (?) boyfriend. To start at the beginning, click here — or jump right in at date seventeen below.

Date 17/30: Tinder Taylor*

Tinder Taylor works as a sports agent, so it doesn’t take long for our Tinder tête-à-tête to segue to a shared love of college football. Two days later, he sweetly asks me to dinner. Common interests and visible manners? I accept.

We set a date for that coming Sunday, which I manage to completely forget about. (Really need to step up my Outlook game.)

He waits a week to ask me out again. I wait a day to reply. (Not purposefully – just having a little trouble keeping up with all this communication. This experiment has turned into the full time job I’ve always tried to never have.)

TT: Hey Stacie! Hope you had a good weekend. I’m pretty open this week if it looks good to get together.

Really hoping he can do tonight – I just had a cancellation and need to squeeze someone in to stay on this whole thirty dates in thirty days schedule.

Me: Hey! Weekend was great, thanks. This week’s a bit packed bc a friend’s coming in town. I’m actually free tonight, though, if you happen to be around.

TT: Ya that sounds good. Have you ever been to Gyu-Kaku? We could meet there at 8 if that works.

Me: Make it 8:30 and that’s perfect

Tinder Taylor turns out to be an absolute doll. Shorter than I expected, but a huge sweetheart. And Lord knows my 4.5″ heels aren’t doing much to help the height discrepancy.

Seconds after our hello, we run into a friend of mine in the entrance of Gyu-Kaku. I introduce TT, immediately adopting the most friend-vibey of mannerisms. The whole blindish date aspect of this thing is still a little weird for me.

As we fire up our Japanese BBQ, we talk. TT is super fond of his job and adores his family – – we discover we both have an autistic brother/it’s quite nice to chat similar experiences. We cap it all off with a s’mores sesh, before grabbing the check and hitting the pavement.

Post-goodbyes, I turn to walk toward my apartment. TT gawkily inquires (half at my back) if I’d like to go on a second date. This is the best situation when you like a guy and are so stoked to say yes. This is the worst situation when you think a guy is such a nice guy, but you sort of don’t want to say yes.

I say yes.

I say yes knowing I’m probably going to ignore his text messages. Because I’m a child who avoids even the smallest confrontation like the plague. No, you know what – this will be such good practice! Practice being a grownup and saying, hey, I think you’re a really great guy, but I just don’t think we’re a match in the board game of love. But yay to both of us for passing Go?

One week later, I tell him I have gotten back together with my ex.

It’s a work in progress.

Teal Carpet At Portland Airport Becomes Online Superstar

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Visitors and Oregon locals lined up inside Portland International Airport to have their photos taken with an odd celebrity — a piece of nearly 30-year-old carpet.

Ever since Oregonian’s learned the iconic teal carpeting at the airport known as PDX was being torn up, the floor covering has become an online superstar. More than 40,000 “foot selfies” — photos people took of their feet on the carpet — were plastered on Instagram.

Demand for actual bits of the carpet have been so high airport officials are giving four local vendors 1,000 square yards each to incorporate into items.

Airport authorities say the carpet is too old for continued use. They said the process to replace the carpet was well under way before they realized how popular it was.

The Truth About Online Dating

Excerpted from the show Failing Forward, The Bluesical by Ken Kirsh

After my wife and I untied the knot, I had to put myself back on the market. If you thought adolescence was awkward, try posting pictures of yourself online so people can instantly judge and dismiss you. I’d rather go back to high school and up to a girl sweating through my Lynryd Skynrd T-shirt with a face full of acne and take my chances.

Women say guys rarely look like their picture, but I can assure you it goes both ways. Whoever said the camera doesn’t lie never went on a match.com date.

But if you think about it, online dating profiles are like online resumes. What guy is gonna say anything bad about himself on LinkedIn: “I’m always late, and I do NOT like working with other people.” And what girl on eharmony is going admit “I haven’t flossed in three weeks, and I have chlamydia…again.

Most of these dating sites have you fill out way too many questions. I think you can actually become a US citizen in less time.

That’s why Tinder is so great. It isn’t a dating site so much as an addictive app like Words With Friends. You don’t have to write anything, just post a few pictures. Then people can swipe right for ‘yes,’ left for ‘no.’ It’s like being in a bar that encourages eye contact and instantly fixes you up if there is. Maybe Words with Friends should develop their own dating app…Words With Friends With Benefits!

2015-03-30-1427680178-5259957-FailingForwardTheBluesical.JPG

But for most dating sites, you have to wade through these long descriptions. I kind of know what goes through a woman’s mind when she’s reading a man’s profile. But I can tell you exactly what a guy is thinking when he reads a woman’s profile:

Girl. I like to go out in my little black dress and get crazy but also stay at home in blue jeans and do nothing.

Guy. She sounds conflicted.

Girl. Here’s a picture of my best friend and me at the beach.

Guy. Please don’t be THAT one!

Girl. No hookups please.

Guy. Yeah, if he’s hot and you get a little drunk, you’ll be fine with it.

Girl. Please don’t lie about your height.

Guy. Damnit!

Girl. I love to travel and discover new restaurants.

Guy. Ok, this could still work.

Girl. Please don’t contact me if you’re just looking for a physical relationship or if you’re emotionally unavailable.

Guy. Well, I don’t know what emotionally unavailable means. I do know what physically unavailable means, and that makes me emotionally sad.

Girl. You should have a sense of humor, be confident, intelligent, athletic and toned, and earn over six figures.

Guy. Is this an actual person she’s talking about?

When you’re younger, dating is fun and there’s lots of time to be wrong. When you’re older, it’s a pain in the ass and there’s no time for mistakes.

Plus, it’s complicated:

You live near each other…but there’s no chemistry.

There’s chemistry…but your schedules don’t line up.

One of you is finished raising a family…the other wants to start one.

Thankfully, every once in a while, you do connect. Everything lines up and all that effort becomes worth it!

30 Days of Online Dating: eHarmony Is for Grownups

This is a modern dating experiment. One girl. Five dating sites. Hundreds of chats. Thirty days. Thirty dates. Eighteen guys. (?) boyfriend. To start at the beginning, click here — or jump right in at date thirteen below.

Date 13/30: eHarmony James*

2015-03-11-1426115772-7974301-eharmonyjames.jpg

Love the same page. eHarmony James and I made it through the quick questions, kicked a$ $ on the makes n’ breaks, and I even managed to successfully traverse the “digging deeper” stage of eHarmony’s Guided Communication without relinquishing an inch of sardonic territory. Great success. That only took two and a half weeks.

Our real life meet n’ greet takes place over tea and orange juice at my home away from home, La Conversation. Our server and a few of the familiar faces were quite amused to see an obvious first date in action.

eHarmony James is great. He’s smart. He’s funny. He loves his family. He loves his work. He’s super grounded. He’s also super serious. This guy knows exactly what he wants. My ovaries tremble. On the outside, I’m totally cool and we chat about almost everything. Like eHarmony Andrew, eHJ tells me he hasn’t read my blog because he didn’t want to feel like he was spying on me. Must be an eHarms thing.

At one point, I bring up a man-friend of mine who happens to possess very limited game where girls are concerned, and chooses to employ it solely on young, and generally struggling, actresses/models.

eHJ: I could teach this guy a few things. Guys have to work their way up to the nice girls. They need to do the whole a$ $ hole, get a hot dumb girl to go home with them thing because they’ve seen it in the movies and it looks awesome — it looks like the dream. And then they grow from there.

He’s such a grownup.

When eHJ excuses himself to the restroom, a dear family friend stops by the table to add her two cents to the situation.

DFF: He seems like a very nice young man. But maybe a little boring? Yes, maybe too boring.

Yes, maybe too boring, DFF.

eHJ tells me he’d love to get together again, but will leave the ball in my “very fashionable court”.

So sweet.

Back at home, I attempt to set up a location for my date that evening with Tinder James. Emphasis on the Tinder.

Me: I’m in Beverly Hills, so anything here or Weho or Culver City’s pretty easy to get to. Honor Bar on Beverly Dr. is cute…or Duplex on 3rd. Or 3rd Stop on 3rd.

eHJ: I think you’re setting up a date with the wrong guy Stacie

Sh*t. Not again. I really need to start eliminating all the duplicate names. Like the five-year-old that I am, I fabricate an obviously fake, over-explanatory explanation.

Me: Ha! Oops. Well, he’s a 21-year-old sorority chick hoping to get into fashion, so it was an easy mistake. You all look alike.

eHJ responds well.

eHJ: Ah. Too bad. I enjoy a little competition

Like I said — grownup.

30 Days of Online Dating: I Should Have Broken the Rules

This is a modern dating experiment. One girl. Five dating sites. Hundreds of chats. Thirty days. Thirty dates. Eighteen guys. (?) boyfriend. To start at the beginning, click here — or jump right in at date eleven below.

Date 11/30: Match Nathan*

My second date with Match Nathan. Our first was a meh dinner/drinks session, but thanks to my pesky rules, I had no choice but to say yes to tonight – dinner at Baco Mercat followed by a one-man show at Mark Taper Forum.

A pre-date Gchat from me to one of my closest friends:

Match Nathan is picking me up in an hour. I’m worried I’m going to seem unexcited/jerkish — especially given how nice he is. I can feel myself doing the thing where I get bratty and over someone, so I’m sort of thinking I might make myself a little pre-date cocktail to tone down my inner a-hole haha.

F. I’m out of vodka. 60 minutes to make a liquor run, consume said liquor, and get myself gussied up for this date. Absolutely necessarily in that order.

Match Nathan had both texted and emailed his excitement earlier that day. Multiple times. I replied to the first two, but found I was short on deep breaths for the rest of them. It’s not totally his fault — my anxiety is at an all-time high trying to juggle the whole scheduling multiple dates a day thing, and slogging my way through 18,000 cheese-laden conversations with virtual strangers every hour. And I’m PMS-ing.

2015-03-02-jesspms.gif

Be nice. Just be nice. Just be f*cking nice.

He’s late. Not only is he late, but he fails to give any updates until this text message:

MN: Downstairs in 1 min…

Is that an order? I slowly lace up my shoes, freshen up my lipgloss, grab my bag, and head toward the door. He calls. I give my phone the death stare down before answering. “Hi, I’ll be right out.” I exit the building to find him frantically plodding toward me. “We’re going to be late. I couldn’t figure out what was taking you so long.

This is not going to go well.

On our previous date, when discussing downtown, I explained that as much as I love certain aspects of that part of the city, I find it confusing to navigate. So the first thing he asks me to do on this date…is navigate. That better be some extra dry humor. The second thing he asks me to do on this date is to use my “fancy phone” to let Baco Mercat know we’re running late.

This was a terrible idea.

The third thing he asks me to do on this date is to explain why I didn’t reply to his “funny GIF.” Because it wasn’t “funny”? I focus all my attention on the scenery. Self-meditation is a thing, right?

At the restaurant, MN takes it upon himself to order for me — without taking it upon himself to ask me what I’d like first. I take it upon myself to call our server back over and revise said order, adding another Tito’s soda to the tab while I’m at it. Dinner is a rushed affair, aside from a five minute disagreement between MN and our server over the correct pronunciation of ‘feta.’ I watch in fascination, unable to eat, all the while wishing I had made this cocktail a double.

Post-dins, we scurry over to Mark Taper, get our hands on a couple drinks and a container of gummy bears at the cart outside — er, I get one hand on mine, as MN yanks the other toward the theater’s doors. As we reach the entrance, we run smack into a very dear friend of his. Of course. Hi, sir. Lovely to meet you. No, this is not what you think. No need to remember my name. Can we go inside now, please.

With barely a word, I run to the ladies’ room. All attempts at breathing into a paper towel are futile. It was worth a shot. MN is hopping impatiently — but an enamored impatience! — on his toes upon my return.

We walk toward the front. He does have lovely seats.

MN: Oh nice — we have the whole row to ourselves.

Um. For what, exactly? And if we have so much room, why are you leaning your very broad self halfway into my seat?

MN: Make sure you turn your phone off.

Thank you. Am I a child?

The show — Humor Abuse — is delightful. My left obliques get a stellar workout, thanks to my aggressive lean-out. (Sorry, Sheryl Sandberg.) Regardless, I have never been so happy to see a curtain close in my life. Thank God. Now let’s get out of this freezing cold, into your car, and back to Beverly Hills.

MN: I want to go check out this fountain over here.

I can sort of understand how he is unable to read the emotions undoubtedly plastered across my face — but this shiver is not subtle. There’s not so much of a want as there is a need where your jacket is concerned, but that’s cool — don’t even offer. Let’s check out this stupid fountain that looks like every other stupid fountain that was ever invented. And then let’s get lost on the way back to your car because you decide to “try a new way.” And you should probably yell at the parking attendant while you’re at it, too. Because this is all his fault.

Now, there are a lot of ways this night could end.

What? No. No. There is only one way this night can end. As soon as possible and with me alone in my own bed.

What’s that? That’s not how it ends?

MN: Want to go grab a drink?

I take full responsibility for this part. I didn’t know what to do. I panicked. I had already revealed that my tomorrow was empty. What’s my excuse? I’m having a terrible time, despite the fact that you’re a nice guy who planned what should have been a delightful evening? I can’t say that. So instead, I say yes. Yes, I would love to continue on this four and a half hour (so far) nightmare of a ride.

He points us toward The Varnish, taking the scenic route down Skid Row, because he’s sure a girl like me hasn’t seen a thing like that.

This is so romantic.

I love The Varnish. It is so hard for me to have a terrible time at the The Varnish. Let’s just say, my plan to stick to one drink goes right out the window when I realize he’s settling in for the long haul. I kick back three immediately. Maybe if I get alcohol poisoning, I can finally go home?

At one point, he asks me to tell him about some of my most awkward dates.

I decide it best not to lead with the one we’re currently on.

When we finally leave, I do a veritable sprint to the car. He catches up, jogging over to my side of the vehicle. I think he’s opening my door; he thinks he’s going in for a kiss.

It’s not a stellar combination.

MN: I’m sorry. I —

Me: No, it’s totally fine. I uh —

I turn, open the door, and strap myself in.

There is complete silence and zero eye contact for the entire drive home.

But he really is such a nice guy?

The 15 Do’s And Don’ts For Posting Pictures Online

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. This is so true, especially when it comes to online dating.

Your picture is the first thing a man sees so it had better be good if you want him to notice you.

This is why I created a list of do’s and don’ts just for you. I want you to get dates with great guys and I know it all starts right here in knowing exactly what to do when it comes to posting great pictures online.

1. DON’T wear clothing that reveals too much. A little cleavage is acceptable but showing three quarters of your breast covered only by a small piece of material is not okay. When you do this, men think you are looking for a sex partner, not a relationship.

2. DON’T post pictures where a man needs a magnifying glass to see you. I don’t care how beautiful that mountain is behind you. If it takes up more space than you do, don’t use the picture.

3. DON’T post pictures with your friends. How many times have you looked at pictures men have posted with friends, wondering which one is the guy who wrote the profile? And how often did you wish it was the guy’s friend posting the profile because he was hotter? Men do the same thing when you post pictures with other women. Do yourself a favor and only post pictures of you!

4. DON’T post pictures with other men, even if he is your son, brother or father. Believe it or not, men think he’s someone you’ve dated in the past, and it turns them off to see you with another man.

5. DON’T take SELFIES. No one likes seeing someone’s toilet or the camera covering half your face in the mirror.

6. DON’T post pictures with your animals and grandchildren. They may be cute but believe it or not, they are seen as competition for your time with men.

7. DON’T post pictures that make you look mad, sad or indifferent to life. I know you may be wondering, who does this? But believe me when I tell you, lots of women do. And it’s a huge turn off to men.

8. DO know that men are visual creatures. The first thing he will look at is your picture, not what you’ve written in your profile.

9. DO take a picture that shows your best assets. If it’s your legs, be sure to show them. If it’s your waist, show that. You want to grab a man’s attention with what is great about you.

10. DO know that you have 10 seconds to get a man’s attention. Make your picture count!

11. DO post at least two great pictures of you; a good headshot and a full body shot. When you only post a headshot, men think you are hiding something you don’t want them to see. And often that’s exactly what you’re doing.

I know you’re probably figuring once they get to know you, it won’t matter. Believe me, it does matter and it makes him think if you’re dishonest about this, what else aren’t you telling him? Be honest here because in reality, you want a guy who accepts you for exactly who you are so you may as well show him who you are upfront.

12. DO hire a pro; or ask a friend or one of your kids who is camera savvy to do this for you. The advantage of a professional picture is they help you stand out from everyone else on the site. Just make sure the photographer does minimal retouching.

13. DO wear clothing that makes you look and feel your best. You take a better picture when you are feeling like the amazing woman you are.

14. DO post recent pictures. I admit it’s nice to look like you’re 40 again but there’s something wrong when a guy has to call you because he can’t figure out which one you are at Starbucks when you’re meeting.

15. DO SMILE! Men are naturally drawn to pictures of women who smile. Your smile makes you glow and gives the impression you are fun and positive to be around. This is so attractive to the men you want to meet!

AARP’s Dating Expert Reveals The Differences Between Older Men And Women Who Date Online

More and more single people over 50 are turning to the Internet to find a later-in-life love connection, but there’s a clear gender divide in how they adjust to dating online, according to AARP dating expert Ken Solin.

Older men who look for mates online usually cast a much wider net than women, Solin told HuffPost Live’s Caitlyn Becker on Friday.

“Men tend to approach online dating like it’s a candy store and they’re a kid with a bag of dimes,” he said. “They just spin the dial, and you can tell … by the emails men send. ‘You’re cute, let’s talk’ — how many people did they send that to?”

On the other hand, women make more careful choices and are more likely to study a potential match’s profile before reaching out. Women also have a better understanding of how sex plays into a relationship, Solin said.

“It’s more difficult for men to understand that the best relationships — the hottest sexual relationships, passionate relationships — are also best friendships, and that’s critical,” he said. “We were raised to think that once you become friends with a woman, sex is over. Actually the opposite is true. Once you becomes friends with a woman you love, sex gets better.”

‘The Interview’ Becomes Sony’s No. 1 Online Movie Of All Time

By Liana B. Baker

Dec 28 (Reuters) – Sony Pictures said on Sunday that the “The Interview” had been purchased or rented online more than 2 million times, generating more than $ 15 million in the first four days after the controversial comedy’s wide theatrical release was shelved.

This would rank the film, which angered North Korea and triggered a cyberattack against the studio, as the No. 1 online movie ever released by Sony Pictures, the company said in a statement.

The film has also brought in $ 2.8 million in the limited theatrical run that began Christmas Day in more than 300 mostly independent theaters, according to tracking firm Rentrak.

Sony is likely to reap larger receipts. The company’s first online revenue figures do not include Apple’s iTunes purchases or rentals after Apple agreed on Sunday to carry the movie on iTunes, the biggest and most-used store of online content.

The $ 44 million film starring Seth Rogen and James Franco had been expected to gross at least $ 20 million in its opening holiday weekend if it had gone to wide release, according to Boxoffice.com.

After large movie theater chains refused to screen the comedy following threats of violence from hackers who opposed the film, Sony stitched together a limited release in theaters and a $ 5.99 video-on-demand (VOD) rental option on YouTube, Google Play and other sites starting Dec. 24. 30 Days of Online Dating: My First Tinder Date

Date 1/30: Tinder James*

2014-12-23-TinderBenjaminOpeningLinefinal.jpg

Mimicking form. Never fails. After that scintillating opener, Tinder James and I immediately (read: two days later) launch into a standard Tinder convo: Current state of mind (spectacular), mutual friends (one — merely a business acquaintance for the both of us), occupations (web designer and writer, respectively), hometowns (Omaha, NE for him and Lincoln for me.) Just enough in common to feel safe, without intersecting circles. Sounds like a go.

9:50p
Me: What brought you out to LA?

9:52p
TJ: It’s kind of a long story. I can tell you all about it over drinks tomorrow night. If you’re free.

It is a go. Woohoo! My first online date!! I am both excited and terrified. We agree to meet at Willie Jane, a cute restaurant/bar in Venice.

10:01p
TJ: What time works best for you? I’m free after 7.

F. What’s a normal date time?? 7:30p is so early. Is 9p too late? Does that seem slutty? It’s been a haute minute (and about six years) since I’ve been on a proper dinner date out on this coast. I decide to Facebook chat my trainer. He’s a judgy man in a committed relationship. He should know these things.

2014-12-23-AlexBedriadatetimeadvicefinal.jpg

Perhaps a bit too judgy. I settle on 8:30.

The next evening, I’m in my car, running about 20 minutes late, before I realize we never exchanged numbers. I don’t have the Tinder app on my BlackBerry, so it looks like I’m just going to have to hope Tinder James hasn’t given up on me by the time I make it out there.

Because it’s Venice, I spend another 10 minutes arguing with some skateboard kids over the one open parking spot on Abbot Kinney. (They’re trying to keep it clear for their “indie-street video shoot”. Obviously.) Sorry, TJ!

Finally at the door to Willie Jane, I pause, prepping myself for an awkward entrance. Thanks to slight nearsightedness and bizarrely terrible facial recognition skills, I can barely pick my friends out of a crowd half the time, let alone a virtual stranger — especially when working off a hazy memory of five inconclusive photos.

He spots me pretty quickly, thank God, and we head to a communal table. First things first: Drink orders. Second thing: Conversation. I decide to launch into a story about our mutual friend, stopping only when it becomes quite clear I’m referencing the wrong mutual friend. Apparently I’ve been having a few too many chats with a few too many men in my outer circle lately.

Tinder James speaks very softly and seems almost shy at first, until a surprisingly harsh bite of sarcasm punches in, knocking me a bit off-kilter. I respond by vacillating between inquisitive I’m sorry’s, incessant rambling, and stilted laughter. Gulp. Cringe. Grimace.

Because this is still Venice, we look over at one point to find ourselves seated next to a semi-decent friend of TJ’s, and the friend’s entire family. Everyone is just dying to know how we met!

From the depths of silence that follow, you would think we had first locked eyes over a dead body or something. Tinder James eventually eeks out a, “We have a few friends in common…”, and then we decide it’s time to get that check before anyone asks any more questions.

Out on the sidewalk, I have absolutely no clue how this date is going — and I’m usually pretty adept at gauging the waters. He suggests another (quieter) bar down the street. I take that as a positive. He likes cars and hates sports, so we have about zero things in common at this point, but as I always say, there’s nothing that more liquor and even more conversation can’t cure. Because quantity. (And Venice.)

When the clock strikes midnight, he unexpectedly nudges to continue on — and this Tinderella is never one to leave the ball early! We amble into The Victorian on Main Street, only to find ourselves surrounded by small children. And by small children, I mean college freshman. Mkay. This might be our cue to call it a night. Though it does feel like he’s finally starting to loosen up.

…He was.

Back at the cars, TJ skips right over the kiss, and goes in for the full-on, old school, 30 minute makeout sesh. One of my favorite hobbies! Maybe we have more in common than I thought?

Probably worth finding out.

30 Days of Online Dating: Tone-Deaf on eHarmony

Me: (In a whining sigh.) Hi.

Boy BFF: Hey, what’s up. Everything alright?

Me: (Still whining. Still sighing.) I don’t want to do this anymore.

BBFF: What are we talking about here.

Me: ONLINE DATING.

BBFF: Ahh, right. Yes. Hasn’t it only been, like, three days?

Me: Five. It’s been five. And today’s eHarmony Day. And it’s just so bright and shiny and smug and judgy. Like, I feel like it’s just sitting there all ready to f*cking marry me off, like, tomorrow. WHAT IF I’M NOT READY, EHARMONY. WHAT IF I’M NOT READY.

BBFF: Ho-kay. I think we need to calm down here for a second. It’s just a website.

Me: Is it ever really just a website?

BBFF suddenly realizes he has to go, citing a call on “the other line”. Because apparently it’s still 2001.

I take a deep breath, glare into my MacBook, and resign to get this last little sucker all set up.

Out of all the sites, eHarmony takes the most rigidly scientific approach to matchmaking. First there’s the profile, which boxes you in with awkwardly earnest fill-in-the-blank action:

2014-12-18-ehmyprofile.png

Next comes a series of questions, similar to those proffered on OkCupid, only slightly more political and definitely more pigeonhole-y: What do you think about America’s insanely high medical costs, do you put more stock in science or faith, in which direction do you cut your PB&J’s….

2014-12-18-eharmsadultageq.png

Maybe I will when I’m 30? Maybe I’m not old enough for this site…

When it comes to setting the parameters for your dream man, they stick pretty close to the basics. Smoking: No. Drinking: Few times a week. Ethnicity: White. Age: 27-41. Children: None yet, but want kids. Religion: Any. Income: Important. Education: Important. Match Distance – uhhh. Thirty miles is the shortest distance they’ll allow you to select?? Anything over seven in LA might as well be a long distance relationship. (Sidenote: There does appear to be a disproportionately large number of single men in Woodland Hills. Wink wink nudge nudge, ladies.)

Finally, I get to the actual talking-to-people part. Sort of. There is, thankfully, no chat option available on eHarmony – though you can “send a smile”, which sort of looks like one of those stickers your first-grade teacher used to give you for meeting your reading goal. There is also no quick message option. eHarmony has devised a very controlled get-to-know-your-potential-stalkers process called Guided Communication:

Stage 1: Quick Questions

You pick five questions from their list of fifteen or so and send ’em over to your Prince(ss) Charming. In answering their selects, you can either choose from the pre-fab A-D or compose your own response. I tend toward the latter as most of their options are a little cut and dry for my taste.

2014-12-18-eHarmonySomeoneElsesAnswer2.png

Note: The above-pictured responses do not reflect the views of the author. I am always competitive.

One question I include in my batch is, “What is your opinion on your mate having opposite sex friendships?” First of all, the word mate makes me cringe. Second of all, I expect most men to quell their weirdly jealous side for at least the pre-first date formalities, but the replies I get range from, “It makes me uncomfortable” at worst to, “I’m comfortable with a few well-established opposite sex friendships” at best. How…generous and trusting of you.

Stage 2: Exchange 10 Make & Breaks

These are pretty straightforward. You pick your top 10 from each list and send ’em over to compare and contrast. Kind of interesting, but fairly predictable.

Stage 3: By now, you’re probably starting to lose interest in this person you’ve never met and who means nothing to you yet, and you’re probably considering dropping out of this lengthy, lengthy process.

But then you take a deep breath and proceed to Dig Deeper. In this stage, you exchange three open-ended questions with one another. You can create your own or select one of eH’s, like, “Tell me about your closest friend. How long have you known them, and what do you like best about them?” (Sorry, Cindy, I caved and told them everything. Really hope our friendship can recover.)

Stage 4: Welcome to eHarmony Mail!

On the off chance you are both in any way, shape, or form still invested in this thing, you are now allowed to send a normal(?) message via their safe, anonymous email system. The funny thing is, as tedious as eHarms’ regimented communication feels, I find myself creeped out by the guys who “request to skip straight to eH Mail”. I mean, if we’re here to play the game, we may as well play by the rules.

A stance solidified by this special little confabulation:

2014-12-18-eharmsehmail.jpg

Nothing good ever comes of Googlaging people.

P.S. According to eHarmony, I like pale, Christian teachers who reside in the South Bay. Want to know your type? Find out here!

Online Dating Now Has Financial Perks … for Your Kids

MatchMadeBefore Tinder and okCupid made online dating not only socially acceptable but also kind of cool Match.com, and eHarmony were inconspicuously (kind of) connecting couples for years. Discretion has certainly faded since 1995 when the Internet got its first matching sites (Pew reports that in 2014 nearly one in ten Americans have tried online dating) so with the stigma of finding your mate practically depleted, it’s time for the early adopters to reap the benefits.
