Samantha is not living the life she thought she was living. Teenager Samantha Rhodes has wandered the desert since her war-torn childhood in bleakest solitude, until the day she discovers an animatronic genie in the sand capable of reversing her fortunes, and fulfilling her wildest wishes.  After a chance encounter with a starving stranger named Ryder begging for help from a distant village, Samantha and her genie Adam rediscover the outside oases in all their revenge-driven brutality. And from the curious way the lizards and birds watch her with glassy eyes, the way the stars in the sky grow exponentially in number during nights of tragedy, and the way captured raiders whisper of a blue goddess wandering in the darkness, Samantha finds herself drawn deeper into a superstitious world filled more with mystery than with terror. And within the wreckage of secret, ancient tunnels beneath the moonlit sands, Samantha discovers why the god of her oasis has given her a magical, weaponized genie.  Along with the frightening truth about the stars in their midnight skies.

Bridget Foley’s Diary: And the Oscar Woes To…

Hollywood can’t get out of its own way.
This week’s news that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will add a most popular movie Oscar not only sent civilian social media into conniptions, but also the Hollywood press and Oscar voters. Reaction was immediate and one-sided, mostly variations on, “what the heck were they thinking?”
Getting less attention, but as important, is the decision that, in the interest of keeping the broadcast to a viewer-friendly three hours, some awards will be presented during commercials, with winners getting their few seconds of fame via edited snippets as at the Tony Awards. That move speaks to an identity dilemma: Is the Oscars’ primary function the acknowledgment of achievement or entertainment? In a perfect world, the two would beautifully coexist, but the world is far from perfect, and Hollywood is hardly a nonprofit enterprise.

An Oscar statue.

Still, it takes a village to make a movie. It’s sad that the organizers of this mega event, supposedly creative thinkers, can’t conjure a better way to reverse the ratings bleed (down 19 percent last year), than to de-emphasize the essential contributions of off-the-radar types. Before the new Popular Oscar gets added, there are 24 awards, which sound

Oscar de la Renta Resort 2019

Describing a fashion show as very “mother-of-the-bride” is not always a compliment. Yet it was accurate and deliberate in the case of Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim’s resort collection for Oscar de la Renta. If there was ever a time to go in that direction, this was it.
Garcia and Kim were already looking at a Wedgwood book by Rizzoli as a key reference for the lineup in February when “we got Meghan [Markle’s] phone call to help dress her mom for the royal wedding,” Garcia said after Tuesday’s show, referring to the ODLR ensemble Doria Ragland wore to her daughter’s, the Duchess of Sussex, nuptials last weekend. He noted that the request to dress the most watched mother-of-the-bride in recent memory and the bridal registry china inspiration were a happy coincidence, so the designers went with it.
The English pottery brand’s heritage informed many of the collection’s colors and patterns. Everything in the lineup would be appropriate for an event on a wedding weekend itinerary — the rehearsal dinner, reception, bridesmaids’ dresses, morning after brunch. The show opened with a series of ivory and pastel stretch wool dresses that were minimal in shape with hemlines cut like architectural petals. There were

Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall 2018

A sea-life-inspired collection shown via mini runway show at Pier 40, overlooking the Hudson River — the references were impossible to miss in Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim’s pre-fall collection for Oscar de la Renta. Cute illustrated seagulls appeared as a print on a shirtdress and on an intarsia blond mink coat. Fishbone motifs included sequined embroidery on an ivory merino shirt with tied shoulder details over houndstooth tweed trousers, and giant ivory laser-cut leather applique on a black tulle evening dress.
“We designed for a summer delivery,” said Garcia. “When it gets to the stores, it’s going to be what you want to wear to your summer house.”
The lineup was extremely commercial, full of takes on white shirting and blouses, which Garcia noted is a best-selling category. The shirts were worn with things such as a navy and white window pane boucle skirt, a navy dip-dyed plaid pencil skirt, a pair of extralong pinstripe skinny trousers that zipped at the ankle, and a neatly tailored black crepe coat with pearl embroidery at the cuff and matching cropped trousers. The pieces were nice and cleanly cut to be filed under the polished modernist fashion category, but Garcia and Lim still need

Saks & League to Save Lake Tahoe Hold Annual Oscar de la Renta Luncheon

Oscar de la Renta’s Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, special guests at the annual Saks Fifth Avenue and League to Save Lake Tahoe luncheon last Saturday, decided to get a close-up look at the nature under threat — and got more than they bargained for.
“Laura and I were going to do a hike at 6:30 in the morning when we saw a bear tear right out of the neighbor’s gate, which was quite the wake-up call. That thing was running fast and I was terrified,” Garcia related. The pair ended up waiting it out and completed their hike, and also enjoyed swimming and waterskiing on the lake.
The centerpiece of the event was a showing of the resort 2018 collection in front of 650 guests at the Schumacher family estate on the shores of the famed body of water.
Created 48 years ago when Bill Blass began showing his collection there to a small group of clients and friends, the event has evolved into a benefit luncheon and fashion show partnership with Oscar de la Renta and Saks Fifth Avenue for almost 20 years. This year’s event raised a record $ 1.1 million.
“We were lucky enough to go on Oscar’s last trip to Lake Tahoe,

Oscar de la Renta Bridal Fall 2016

Peter Copping infused his gorgeous bridal collection with a ready-to-wear influence, reinterpreting styles from his spring 2016 runway with a bridal twist — and a particular focus on separates. Case in point: an elegant silk faille trumpet gown with a Chantilly lace bustier covered in organza “petals” drew from a similar style from Copping’s spring collection, seen there in a black cocktail version. Delicate embroidery — such as pearls, pale pink floral appliqués, sequins and bugle beads stitched together to create flower shapes — covered sheer bateau necklines and voluminous ballskirts, creating a soft, ethereal and distinctly feminine mood. A couple of sheer lace tops, done in short-sleeve and halter versions with ribbon ties, could be styled over column gowns or worn on their own with Copping’s frothy tulle skirts, one of them covered in hand-cut rosettes.

Oscar de la Renta Honored at Crystal Charity Ball in Dallas

FOURTH TIME’S A CHARM: Oscar de la Renta is the only design house that has been featured four times at the Crystal Charity Ball luncheon and fashion show, the biggest annual event at Neiman Marcus’ flagship in downtown Dallas. On Friday, designer Peter Copping and company executives Alex and Eliza Bolen were on hand to present de la Renta’s resort collection to 480 guests seated in a white tent next to the store.
First, however, came a presentation of the 10 Best Dressed Women of Dallas – socially prominent figures who are in the charity’s exclusive membership of 100. All donned looks from Copping’s fall collection for the house.
“I really enjoyed seeing the 10 best-dressed women because that really brings it home,” Copping said. “You can sit in your studio and be designing all these great clothes, but to actually see who the women are who wear it – that is really interesting and a great learning curve.”
The honorees were Katherine Coker, Janie Condon, Heather Esping, Margaret Hancock, Pat Harloe, Julie Hawes, Ashley Hunt, Patty Leyendecker, Francie Moody Dahlberg and Christi Urschel. The charity also paid tribute to “Hall of Fame” honoree Sarah Perot and honorary chairman Ruth Altshuler, a nonagenarian

Oscar de la Renta RTW Spring 2016

Signs were all around the Oscar de la Renta spring show indicating that Peter Copping has gotten settled since his arrival at the house last fall, when he was not only new on a big job but also navigating extremely emotional, hallowed ground. With sensitivity and reverence to his forebear, Copping made his own necessary adjustments and the results were splendid. For starters, he moved the runway out of the showroom to the Prince George Ballroom, where the set had the intimately grand ambience of a couture salon and the convenience of the ground floor — bye bye elevator crush at 11 West 42nd Street. Copping lobbied to relocate the show to make it more of an event worthy of the house. It was a good decision.

On each seat was a single red carnation, de la Renta’s favorite flower and a significant bloom in Spanish and Latin culture, which were the primarily references for Copping’s beautiful collection. He isn’t mounting a radical overhaul. The changes to the venue and the clothes are in the interest of updating and personalizing the point of view at de la Renta while remembering what’s appropriate for the house. Copping based the Spanish and Latin

Oscar de la Renta Resort 2016

Peter Copping’s creative direction at Oscar de la Renta is still in its infancy, as he discovers the world of the late designer and how to treat it. Resort was Copping’s second collection — third if you count bridal — for the house, and he used it to explore one of de la Renta’s signature motifs — bright color — through the lens of his favorite places. “I really wanted to marry two of Oscar’s worlds, New York City and Punta Cana,” Copping said. It goes without saying that de la Renta’s love for unapologetic femininity, which Copping shares, was also a major factor.

Beach colors of marigold, magenta, persimmon and marine blue were used in bold floral prints and embroideries, sometimes in tandem on printed dresses with embroidered over-bodices. Copping tends toward a light construction, which refreshed neat daywear, such as a black-and-white mini daisy dot cotton poplin skirt suit, and gave breathing room to voluminous taffeta gowns and cocktail dresses that riffed on opera coats. Swimwear-inspired bodices and a filmy caftan — Copping’s first ever — underscored the air of ease that’s wafting through the house.

SCAD to Premiere Oscar de la Renta-Inspired Short Film at Cannes

The Savannah College of Art and Design will premiere the 21-minute short “Ovation for Oscar: An Exhibition at SCAD Museum of Art” with a double billing Thursday at the Cannes Film Festival. Told from the perspective of SCAD student and former Oscar de la Renta intern Sloane Mayberry, the documentary is a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the “Oscar de la Renta: His Legendary World of Style” exhibition at SCAD that was curated by André Leon Talley and was on view this spring. Alex Bolen, chief executive officer of Oscar de la Renta LLC, is among the members of the late designer’s inner circle who shed some light on his many talents.
As the first posthumous museum tribute to the designer, who died in October, the show featured 60 ensembles from such notables as Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Oprah Winfrey and Sarah Jessica Parker. In addition to the SCAD museum show, the film (which was made by SCAD alumni and undergraduates) also delves into the yet-to-be-released Rizzoli book “Oscar de la Renta: His Legendary World of Style,” written by Talley and photographed in conjunction with the exhibition.

Peter Copping on His First Bridal Collection for Oscar de la Renta

new-holding-osca-de-la-renta-bridal

“It’s her prerogative to be the center of attention,” says newly appointed Oscar de la Renta designer Peter Copping of the modern bride’s mentality. (As if she needed any encouragement!)

Copping stayed true to the house’s elegant and feminine codes for his first bridal show, while incorporating subtle twists—plunging-back here, lace inserts there—that ensure the spotlight stays where it should: on the bride. Or more specifically: on her entrance as she walks down the aisle.

“You have to remember: Most of these dresses are seen from behind,” Copping tells me after the show yesterday. “That was something I really wanted to consider: to think how it would look when the bride is in front of everyone, and to make it as gorgeous as the front.”

Other considerations? The modern bride isn’t afraid to let her hair down and party. And that makes maneuvering the first dance with elegance and ease more important than ever.

“A wedding is a day of celebration and it’s important that the bride really enjoys herself—she’s not encumbered by her dress,” says Copping. A tall order when you consider the voluminous confections that were on the runway yesterday. Take a closer look at the collection though, and you’ll find some very clever convertible design tricks: The tulle skirt on one dress peels off to reveal a form-fitting column dress, and on another, two tiers of tulle can be removed for a short “ballerina-type” dress. “So she can really party on and have fun until the small hours of the night,” explains Copping.

And what does the designer make of the growing trend among brides to have not one but two wedding gowns? “I think that’s a very good idea,” he says. “Obviously, it’s good for business. So let’s keep that trend going.” We’re all for it—with one caveat. “If you do go for two weddings dresses, there has to be a balance,” says Copping. “One has to feel a little bit understated, or be shorter, so it makes sense for you to have two.” Happily Copping’s varied offering—which had everything from princess gowns to minidresses—has got you covered on all accounts.

Lupita Nyongo’s $150,000 Oscar Dress Stolen From Her Hotel Room

A major heist went off after the Academy Awards, apparently. Lupita Nyongo’s $ 150,000 pearl Oscar dress was stolen from the London Hotel in West Hollywood, Calif., police announced Thursday (Feb. 26).

Nyong’o was not in room when the dress was swiped, reportedly on Wednesday between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.

The Oscar winner left her room for most of the day, at which point the thief jacked the one-of-a-kind Calvin Klein Collection creation by Franco Costa.

Authorities were called to the hotel Wednesday night, after a publicist for the actress reported the crime. The thief is believed to be on hotel surveillance, but police have not yet apprehended a suspect. They are said to be reviewing the hotel’s footage.

Nyongo’s publicist declined to comment on the heist, as did the hotel.

The show-stopping dress was adorned with 6,000 pearls. Nyongo coupled the look with Chopard diamonds for a “diamonds and pearls” theme, which she called an “homage to Prince.”

Oscar Plan to Give All Awards to Beyoncé to Prevent Kanye ProtWests

The Oscar awards committee today announced controversial new plans to give all future awards to singer Beyoncé Knowles in an attempt to stop rapper Kanye West from storming the stage.

The sight of Kanye, producer of such international hits as “Jesus Walks” and “Gold Digger”, helping himself to the podium steps has become a common sight in recent years and has been dubbed ProtWests or ProtWesting by satirists with too much time on their hands.

A spokesperson for the committee told us, “I think it’s become obvious that Kanye knows best; I mean take the Grammys. Awarding the prize to a genial newcomer like Beck who barely has thirty years in the music industry instead of Beyoncé was just unforgivable and, frankly the totally impartial committee should have known better. As should E! News for branding the microphones that they paid for with their own money.”

“Originally we thought that awarding statues to recipients based on a consensus from a large and diverse group of industry professionals was pretty fair, but then Kanye brought to our attention that this just didn’t sit well with him.”

Despite Ms. Knowles, 34, not actually doing anything to qualify for the movie industry’s highest award this year, a source close to Mr. West made it clear that “they shouldn’t let that stop them, or buddy, Kanye will.”

Other organizations said to be considering similar moves are the SAG Awards, The Producers Guild and the Nobel Peace Prize Committee. A spokesperson for the latter told us, “We considered other moves to prevent Kanye protWesting us, such as large fences around the stage with really big spikes, armed guards or just not inviting him to anything with a statue, but we think that in the long run just giving all the awards to Beyoncé will work out better.”

The Signature Beauty Looks of the 2015 Best Actress Oscar Nominees, from Marion Cotillard to Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon

The Oscar nominations were announced today to a flurry of Internet chatter (Jennifer Aniston was robbed! What about Selma?). One thing that can be universally agreed upon, however, is that the Best Actress nominees have already won us over on the red carpet this year with powerful signature beauty looks as distinguished as their performances.

Take Bond Girl turned Gone Girl star Rosamund Pike, who masterfully walks the line between ladylike and edgy with a penchant for pretty nude makeup, a sleekly styled bob—and the occasional flash of her fearless undercut—while The Theory of Everything contender Felicity Jones went from fresh-faced ingénue to a sophisticated force to be reckoned with both on and off the silver screen.

But it’s not just Academy Award first-timers who’ve been stealing the spotlight. In contrast to her practically barefaced performance in Wild, Reese Witherspoon regularly pays tribute to Old Hollywood glamour—glossy, side-swept curls, neatly painted crimson lips, and the occasional smoky eye. With her impossibly radiant skin and fine-boned features—to say nothing of her covetable red mane—Still Alice front-runner Julianne Moore hasn’t lost an ounce of appeal since her first Oscar nod for Boogie Nights almost 20 years ago. And with her thoughtfully polished take on Parisian elegance, this year’s surprise nominee, Marion Cotillard, (Two Days, One Night) reminds us that even the most classic sensibility can have spectacular range.

Here, a look at the 2015 Best Actress contenders’ best beauty looks.

73 things you didn’t know about Reese Witherspoon (aka Little Spoon):

Oscar Winning Costume Designer Colleen Atwood Vies For Yet Another Nomination

You might not know her by name, but costume designer Colleen Atwood’s visual impact on the silver screen has hardly gone unnoticed. A frequent collaborator with heavy hitters Tim Burton, Jonathan Demme and Rob Marshall, Atwood has lent her creative talent to more than 60 feature films, including “Edward Scissorhands,” “Beloved” and “Silence of the Lambs.” She’s picked up three Academy Awards for Best Costume Design (“Chicago,” “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Alice in Wonderland”), with another seven nominations. And she shows no signs of stopping there.

“I moved to New York in 1980 with $ 800,” she told The Huffington Post. “I sewed labels on for bespoke designers in SoHo.” Her technical skills would quickly improve as she’s become known for inconceivably intricate designs and brilliant, one-of-a-kind pieces. Honored recently at the Middleburg Film Festival, Atwood received the Distinguished Costume Designer award.

colleen atwood

Colleen Atwood, with an Oscar-nominated design for “Snow White and the Huntsman.”

Atwood’s latest project embodies her strengths, creating far more elaborate designs than fans would recognize from a stage production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods.” “The trickiest aspect of about ‘Into the Woods,’ and the thing that changed when it became a Disney film, is that Little Red was played by an adult [on Broadway] and in the film she is played by a child,” Atwood explained.

Rob Marshall, director of the ambitious and star-studded adaptation of “Into the Woods,” in theaters Dec. 25, has had the good fortune to join forces with Atwood on numerous occasions.

“Johnny [Depp] was actually very involved in the creation of [his costume],” Marshall told HuffPost, “because he is a creative force, obviously. He was very inspired by the wolf of the cartoons of Tex Avery from the ’40s, where the Wolf is dressed in a zoot suit and a fedora, and it’s like a wolf in sheep’s clothing.”

“In costuming, a lot of actors dread the fitting — a new form of punishment — but once they’re in the room they love it,” Atwood said. “It’s about presenting a point of view. In a fitting, you can see right away whats not working for an actor.”

colleen atwood witch

The Witch. A sketch by Colleen Atwood for “Into the Woods.”

For “Into the Woods,” Marshall used Atwood’s longstanding relationship with Depp to his advantage. “[Atwood and Depp] have worked together on everything from ‘Edward Scissorhands’ to ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ they’ve done a million movies together and I’ve done a million movies with Colleen. So, we were able to find our stylized version of the Wolf, and let Johnny play it.”

Atwood reiterated Depp’s influence in the design process: “Johnny has a certain intuitive sense of style and character that is definitely something he owns,” she said. “I’ve known Johnny for 20 years, so I’ve seen Johnny become Johnny, in a way. In designing for him, I try to give him little magical things: for instance, when I did ‘Alice,’ thimbles for his fingers and a pin cushion ring I found on eBay.”

These “magical things” foster the talent’s eccentricities, Atwood explained, offering something more prominent costume pieces do not. “I don’t particularly like films where I have to go shopping and go through 25 people to decide which white blouse is the right white blouse,” she said. “That’s not for me.”

She’s managed to avoid being pigeonholed throughout her decades-long career, designing costumes for everything from ballets to commercials. But Atwood admits her most remarkable creations have appeared in Burton’s films, and that she’s turned him down just once. “The only time I’ve ever said no to Tim was ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,’ for personal reasons, but initially I was supposed to do it,” Atwood explained. “It was very tough, but its strange, because at the same time, right after I said no, which was heartbreaking because I really wanted to do it, they called me to do ‘Memoirs of a Geisha,’ which was a blessing in a different way,” she said. (Atwood’s work on “Memoirs of a Geisha” was recognized with an Oscar for Best Achievement in Costume Design — her second.) “In my career I’ve been extremely lucky.”

Not every film Atwood has worked on earned an Oscar nod, but that’s not what drives her work. “The Martian Girl dress [for Burton’s ‘Mars Attacks’] went through many evolutions. But it was the most awesome kind of costume, because it was so low tech,” she said. Known for fantastic, hand-made designs, Atwood proves that sometimes all it takes a little glitter and glue to pull off a showstopper. “People just didn’t get [‘Mars Attacks’] at the time and it’s such a cool movie. I remember the premiere was very industry. It’s a shame that the reaction wasn’t more positive — like one finger clapping — and I was really bummed for time. We went across the street to the party and Jack [Nicholson] and he looks and me and says, ‘Who cares! It’s a great movie,’ and I think he’s right and I’m really glad I did it.”

Though often months of planning goes into a single design, a somewhat abbreviated conceptualization has produced exceptional results at least once for the designer.

“I did that mask [worn by Hannibal Lecter in ‘Silence of the Lambs’] and it was loosely based on a hockey mask — and originally it was going have a different surface, but a sample came in to try on Anthony [Hopkins] and it was in raw fiberglass, which looked like skin, and I said, ‘Well, I think it’s done.’ It was so creepy that way that it worked,” Atwood explained. “We had no idea it would be so creepy.”

Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) in “Silence of the Lambs,” wearing Colleen Atwood’s now-iconic mask.

The impeccable severity of the costumes for “Gattaca,” 1997’s absorbing sci-fi flick starring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, were a testament to the designer’s resourcefulness. “‘Gattaca’ had a really low budget, but I found a lot of really beautiful ’30s men’s suits, and I recut some ’80s suits with modern fabric to make it work,” she said. “I could dress that way myself in that it’s urban timelessness, almost like a uniform.”

Amused by the notion that she’d ever imagine herself in, say, seductress Velma Kelly’s shoes, however, Atwood described her design philosophy as it relates to the dazzling pieces she created for “Chicago,” Marshall’s 2002 musical adaptation that racked up six Oscars of 12 nominations (including Atwood’s for the costumes). “When I design costumes, it’s an external thing,” she said, “not something that I see myself in. It’s a vision that I have of other things. My wardrobe, I tend to keep it rather simple.” In her own closet, Atwood reaches for Saint Laurent, and “usually something black.”

To emerging costume designers with aspirations to work in Hollywood, Atwood offers sound advice: “It’s different now, but it’s not different. If you get a job on a film, even if not in the department you want to be in, take it. If you’re good at your job and you work hard, people will notice — It’s a foot in the door … At the end of the day, I’m proud to say that I experience continual joy in what I do,” Atwood said, racking up Oscar nominations along the way.
