Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill & Harrison Ford Reunited At The ‘Star Wars’ Comic-Con Panel

The “Star Wars” panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday brought together a handful of original cast members.

Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford joined several other actors from the franchise on stage. It marked Ford’s first public appearance since the actor was injured when his plane crash-landed in MarchFisher and Hamill had previously reunited at the “Star Wars” Celebration event earlier this year alongside former co-stars Peter Mayhew and Anthony Daniels, but it was truly a treat to see Luke and Leia with Han Solo.

And for the record, Ford says he’s feeling “fine”:

Although “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” director J.J. Abrams said the new trailer won’t debut until the fall, a behind-the-scenes reel was shown during the panel. The video featured a look at “The Force Awakens” cast on set, including Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Lupita Nyong’o.

A few key details about the upcoming film also were revealed on Friday. Adam Driver, Domhall Gleeson and Gwendoline Christie all came out as members of the Dark Side during the panel. While we knew Driver will play a bad guy named Kylo Ren and Christie will play Captain Phasma, we learned that Gleeson is also an evil character. The “Ex Machina” star will play General Hux, who’s in command of Starkiller base, a new location that’s an homage to Luke Skywalker’s original last name in the “Star Wars” scripts

It was also confirmed that Simon Pegg will indeed be in “The Force Awakens.” However, we won’t see his face, since his character will be hidden in a costume.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is out on Dec. 18.

All-Women Panel Talks TV Sex Scenes And The Problem With ‘Strong Female Characters’

The women of Showtime’s TV series just broke down exactly why sex scenes on television are so important.

On Jan. 12, the Television Critics Association held an all-women panel titled “Sexuality and Television: A Female Perspective.” The panel, which focused on the impact of sex scenes on TV, featured women from multiple Showtime series including actresses Emmy Rossum, Shanola Hampton (both from “Shameless”), Maura Tierney (“The Affair”), Caitlin FitzGerald (“Masters Of Sex”), and writer/producers Nancy Pimental (“Shameless”), Michelle Ashford (“Masters Of Sex”) and Sarah Treem (“The Affair”).

Rossum kicked off the session, telling the audience that sexuality is “no different from showing any other part of life” on television. “It’s interesting that the women who write on these shows get to explore different facets of sex: Sometimes (as humans) you have sex for reasons that have nothing to do with sex,” she said. “It’s about power, insecurity or maybe to feel good. These women don’t show it in a gratuitous way.

When one critic asked the panel whether sex scenes could reach the level of “exploitative,” Tierney responded that it’s subjective: “You have to be in the scene to decide if a scene is exploitative,” she said. “It’s up to the actor to decide.” Treem, who recently won a Golden Globe for Best Drama Series for “The Affair,” then added that she doesn’t feel that any of the three shows’ sex scenes are exploitative. “We use sex as communication in our show,” she said. “We hope our sex scenes move the story forward.”

“We don’t do the scenes unless they’re necessary. If they’re not furthering the story, they can be emotionally exploitative,” Rossum, who plays Fiona, a character who has a lot of sex on “Shameless,” agreed.

When the term “strong female character” came up the women had mixed feelings on the phrase and questioned whether it should be used at all. BuzzFeed reported that Treem said she didn’t mind the term: “When I hear ‘strong female character,’ what it says to me is a character that’s taking action and isn’t passive or reactive to a male character.”

FitzGerald expressed qualms with the term:

This word “strong,” I find a little tricky. We have heard ‘strong female character’ so frequently, and I think the word ‘strong’ puts me in line with a very specific masculine energy. I appreciate what the sentiment is supposed to be with that phrase… but all of us are strong in our vulnerability, our nakedness, emotionally or otherwise. And so, I just think we need other kinds of words: “comprehensive,” “whole,” “complete,” “real.”

“How about just ‘strong character’?” Rossum chimed in. “I’ve never heard anybody say ‘strong male character.’ Nobody talks about that at all. I guess men have always been No. 1 on the call sheet, but now women are and that’s great. So let’s not make it a gender thing.”

Rossum summed up the theme of the panel discussion perfectly when she said, “There’s no lack of balls on behalf of our writers to write a female character who is gutsy,” Deadline reported. “We’re not confined to showing the most culturally acceptable part of the character. We show everything about them.”
