‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ Finally Tops ‘Black Panther’ For No. 1 Weekend Box Office

John Boyega Attends Special Screening of Pacific Rim: Uprising in NYC

Source: Ilya Savenok / GettyImages / Ilya Savenok / GettyImages

Black Panther is no longer no. 1, but the new film in the top spot is worthy. Pacific Rim: Uprising, which stars John Boyega, won the weekend box office with $ 151 million.

Not too shabby for a sequel.

Reports Deadline:

Legendary/Universal’s Pacific Rim: Uprising came in slightly higher than Saturday estimates, topping $ 150M worldwide on its opening weekend with $ 150.5M. The debut clocked $ 122.5M at the international box office, including $ 65M in China which was the biggest home for the original 2013 film — and a large part of why the sequel was greenlit under the previous leadership of Wanda-owned Legendary.

As for Black Panther, it is now the no. 1 grossing superhero flick, of all time.

‘Black Panther’ Remains No. 1 At The Box Office After 5th Week

Chadwick Boseman

Source: Marvel Studios / Marvel Studios

Black Panther has plenty of staying power. T’Challa’s Marvel flick remained atop the weekend box office, relegating new flick Tomb Raider to second place.

Reports the New York Times:

The return of a blockbuster action franchise couldn’t bump “Black Panther” from the top of the box office this week. The Marvel movie earned another $ 27 million for its fifth straight week at No. 1, leaving “Tomb Raider” to settle for second place.

“Black Panther” has now made $ 605 million domestically, making it the second-fastest movie to reach $ 600 million behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Globally, it has made $ 1.2 billion and sits in 14th place all time. But ticket sales fell steeply in its second weekend in China, where audiences complained about “political correctness.”

Umm, later for China and their critique of Black Panther being “too Black.” It’s 2018—catch up. No shots.

As for Tomb Raider, it reportedly made $ 23.5M its first weekend. However, with a budget of $ 94M, that’s disappointing, to say the least.

‘Black Panther’ feels like a cultural watershed

Black superheroes have reached the screen before, but seeing the collective weight of Marvel/Disney thrown behind a blockbuster like “Black Panther” still feels like a cultural watershed, one that the movie exuberantly embraces. Boasting perhaps the strongest supporting characters yet among Marvel titles, director Ryan Coogler’s visually dynamic film should transform a lesser-known comic-book hero into a household name.

‘Black Panther: Welcome to Wakanda’ Fashion Event Features 10 Designers

“Black Panther: Welcome to Wakanda,” a nod to the fashion inspired by the new superhero movie, will be presented by Marvel Studios on Feb. 12 as part of New York Fashion Week.
The red carpet event takes place at Industria at 775 Washington Street from 8 to 10 p.m., and several stars from the movie are expected to attend.
Designers including Chromat, Cushnie et Ochs, Fear of God, Ikiré Jones, Laquan Smith, Sophie Theallet and Tome worked with Marvel Studios to create one-of-a-kind pieces interpreting different characters and themes from the movie. The designers were selected for their dedication to empowerment and individualism through fashion.
The seven bespoke pieces will be unveiled the night of the event and installed in a Wakanda-inspired venue that guests can explore. Following the event, the looks will be auctioned off via Charitybuzz.com in support of Save the Children.
Jones called the experience “awesome and great.”
“I was honored, and I saw the film with my partner. It’s an attempt to help uplift the voices of people who have been marginalized historically and in the present day, both in the U.S. and globally, and Ikiré Jones specifically does that by using fashion as a vehicle to address these issues. It’s beautiful

New Black Panther Party & KKK Engage In Standoff Over Confederate Flag [Photos]

If you or someone you know is still trying to push the innocent “Southern pride” association onto the Confederate flag, consider yourself a good fried of the KKK.

The infamous racist mob held court at South Carolina’s statehouse a week after Governor Nikki Haley had the rebel symbol of hate permanently removed.

The kicker, this time around, was members of the New Black Panther Party were also on the grounds conducting their anti-protests for the flag.

Reports The Washington Post:

The Loyal White Knights of the KKK, which calls itself the largest chapter in the United States, held a rally in Columbia, S.C., on Saturday afternoon to protest the removal of the flag, which was spearheaded by Republican Gov. Nikki Haley.

The New Black Panther Party showed up earlier in the day to protest, on the north side of the statehouse. Members encouraged the hundreds who came to keep things peaceful, while also encouraging African Americans to take ownership of their problems and fight back when necessary.

When Klansmen arrived later, the groups clashed intermittently. A man wearing a Confederate flag vest was slugged in the head, and a skirmish erupted. Police could be seen breaking up other fights, detaining people and hauling them away. One group stole a Confederate flag and sought to set it on fire before police intervened.

The Klan rally, which ended around 4 p.m., featured no speakers but chants of “White power!” from the around 100 who attended.

Saturday’s event followed a swift reckoning for the Confederate flag that began soon after photos of Charleston shooting suspect Dylann Roof surfaced, showing him displaying banner long associated with racial hate groups like the Klan. Roof, an apparently self-radicalized loner who grew up in and around South Carolina’s diverse capital city, is accused of killing nine people praying at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C., last month.

Check out pictures of the standoff on the flip. As you can see, the only thing keeping these trolls empowered these days is trolling.

Ava DuVernay Passes on Directing ‘Black Panther’

Ava Duvernay Turns Down Marvel’s “Black Panther”

The internet was all a-buzz when it was announced that Ava Duvernay, most notably known for directing “Selma,” would leap into the Marvel Universe with “Black Panther.”

The film maker said that the deal is dead. She and Marvel were unable to reach an agreement creatively.

“I guess I’ll declare my independence from this rumor on 4th of July [and] Essence weekend!” said DuVernay, today from the well attended festival in New Orleans. “I’m not signing on to direct Black Panther. I think I’ll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be. Marvel has a certain way of doing things and I think they’re fantastic and a lot of people love what they do. I loved that they reached out to me.”

The Black Panther, an African super hero, will make his cinematic debut in next year’s guaranteed blockbuster “Captain America: Civil War.” It simply wasn’t meant to be, even though

“I loved meeting Chadwick and writers and all the Marvel execs. In the end, it comes down to story and perspective. And we just didn’t see eye to eye. Better for me to realize that now than cite creative differences later. I love the character of Black Panther, the nation of Wakanda and all that that could be visually. I wish them well and will be first in line to see it,” she said.

A replacement director has not been announced, but Duvernay said she would know before the end of the summer.
