Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Moj Mahdara Partner on Beauty Competition

Modelpreneur Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Beautycon Media chief executive officer Moj Mahdara have their sights set on creating their own beauty competition-style TV show. “We’re working on it,” said Mahdara on Thursday night in Los Angeles, where she and Huntington-Whiteley hosted an influencer-packed dinner to celebrate the winner of their “Next Beauty Star” social media contest.
“We were introduced through a mutual friend, actually our facialist Shani Darden, and I felt like I’d known Moj for 100 years,” explained Huntington-Whiteley, who in May launched her Rose Inc. lifestyle platform which highlights new products and personalities in the beauty space. “We talked about how we could bring the brands together and feeling like we wanted to create a mentorship program to find the next rising star in the industry.”
They set five weekly challenges for their followers (create a blue smoky eye, glowing makeup, a sun-kissed look using pastel products), reviewed submissions sent via social media channels, and picked the winner, Cameron Day, who they will be sending to beauty school in L.A. “We loved Cameron and she had a really great story, coming to beauty later in life and moving to L.A. from Detroit to start her career. Hopefully she’ll be doing my makeup soon,”

The Pop-up Economy: Citizens of Humanity, Janessa Leone Partner at The Platform

Call it a pop-up economy. Perhaps a combination of retail uncertainty, high rents and fickle shoppers, the pop-up shop may soon need to change its definition as more and more of them appear in Los Angeles, and persist longer than the intended period. But the concept has not worn out its welcome at The Platform, the hipster retail collective in Culver City, Calif., which from the get-go has welcomed these “temporary” shops along with permanent ones.
One of the first to open there two years ago, The Edit by Freda Salvador and Janessa Leone, a partnership between the independently owned shoe brand and hat brand, respectively, has graduated to permanent status and is welcoming a pop-up of its own, with L.A.-based premium denim brand Citizens of Humanity.
The tie-up, which opens May 17, marks the first time The Edit has incorporated apparel items into its store, which necessitated bringing in some new fixtures and dressing rooms along with incorporating the jeans on the existing shelves with accessories.

An Open Letter To My Ex-Husband: Thanks For Loving Me And My New Partner

A year after her divorce, Neecey Kirby has nothing but gratitude for her ex-husband Kris. Though the pair split up in 2014 after five years as a couple, they’ve stayed friends for the sake of their two young boys. Looking back, Kirby says that spending her late 20s and early 30s with Kris changed her life entirely for the better.

Below, the mom of two, who lives in Memphis, Tennessee, thanks her ex-husband for all he’s done for her and their kids.

I’ll never be the ex-wife at the table bashing her ex-husband, hoping everyone hears it. In fact, I’m the ex-wife thanking her ex-husband. I look back now at the time we were together and realize it laid the groundwork for who I am today.

Kris, you and I have been divorced for a year this fall. We separated first, went through marriage counseling and tried our best but it didn’t work.

While married, we fought against a lot of things people told us would lead to us failing as a couple. While actively proving them wrong, we found other hurdles no one warned us about. You’re 10 years my senior and deal with mood swings, but you always try to better yourself. I’m younger, sharp-tongued and bullheaded in my beliefs. We’re opposites, but you showed me beauty in a life I had never lived.

I’ll never regret the years we were together. I created a home for myself with you, when I never really had much of one before. You helped me grow, you showed me love and compassion even in our differences. We had our own family drama, of course, but you you truly made me understand what it means to be part of a family.

Family, for me, would start with us creating our sons. We have two of the most beautiful children. Thank you for them. I see you in them every day. We had them fifteen months apart and though we hardly slept and were a bundle of nerves most of the time, we kept running and tried to do our best as parents.

We tried so hard — and depended on each other so much to fulfill our individual needs — I think we ran ourselves dry. And with everything in me, I’m sorry that I wasn’t in the marriage any longer. Yes, I know the reasons we didn’t work out. But I hold no resentment.

Thank you for loving my new partner, Sarah, simply because you know I love her. I know that your ex-wife finding love in an alternative lifestyle is hard and probably brought about so many unanswered questions for you, but when she came into my life, I was finally figuring out who I could be. You gave me confidence and helped shape the person I am today. She fell for everything you helped build. And I thank you for that.

Thank you for harboring no ill will toward my happiness, or my decision to let Sarah take an active role in our beautiful sons’ lives. We created those boys when we were strong as a couple and they’re growing to be the best parts of all three of us daily. You’ve helped me keep their lives so joyous and safe in a way I never experienced growing up. I trust that when you find love again, our sons will benefit from having the best parts of four parents in their lives.

Thank you for co-parenting with me. I never have to wonder if your heart is in it, and you trust that everything I do is for our sons.

Lastly, thank you for who you are. You were the only road I could have taken to lead me where I am today. You are responsible for so much of my happiness and for that, I thank you the most.

— Neecey

Cynthia Vincent Latest Designer to Partner With O’Neill

PRINT PLAY: The tribal and floral prints Cynthia Vincent is known for will soon be on the wetsuits and swimwear of O’Neill.
It’s the surfwear brand’s second time partnering with a designer and follows the rollout of fall pieces done in conjunction with Anna Sui, which hit stores a few weeks ago and saw quick sell-through on pieces such as a cream-colored kimono and crochet bikini.
“We’re really careful to partner with someone who will elevate our current looks,” said O’Neill women’s design director Rachael Hill. “There’s definitely synergy there. [The designer collaborations are] not necessarily a departure for us as much as it is an expansion and kind of captivating another customer we wouldn’t get otherwise.”
The collection for summer 2016 is expected to hit retail in April and is organized into three categories: sportswear, retailing from $ 59.50 to $ 99.50; swim, ranging from $ 46 to $ 110; and wetsuits priced between $ 140 to $ 200.
The company’s now turned to its holiday collection, which will also infuse designs from Vincent and could possibly include party dresses, chunky sweaters and giftable items, such as cosmetic bags or footwear. However, Hill said the collection is still in its early stages.
Additional designer collaborations are possible for the future

Why You And Your Partner Need To Negotiate Sex

How important is sex in a marriage? So important, according to Dr. Phil, that it should actually be a topic that’s on the table and actively negotiated between two partners.

“When you define sex, you have to think about it much more broadly than most people do. It involves all forms of physical contact; it involves the emotional aspects and elements,” Dr. Phil says in the video above. In other words, the emotional and physical aspects of a relationship are intertwined, and there will inevitably be pain if your needs are not being met. He concludes, “It’s not something to be shy and bashful about. It’s something that you should talk about openly and candidly. It is what sets that relationship apart from all others. It is important that you discuss this rather than just build resentment or feel neglected.”

Tyga Sued $1.6M For Cutting Partner Out Of Last Kings Line

If Tyga is indeed cursed for the year 2015, this newest lawsuit has painfully he still has roughly an half of year to endure it.

The embattled rapper is being accused of doing some shady business regarding his Last Kings clothing line.

Reports TMZ:

Tyga screwed a woman — not named Kylie — by lying to her, and jacking her concept for a clothing company to the tune of more than a MILLION bucks … or so she claims in a new lawsuit.

According to the docs … Tyga and Chuon Guen Lee formed the clothing line Last Kings in January 2013 — and she says Tyga promised to heavily promote the line and get it on shelves in the popular clothing chain, Tilly’s.

Lee says none of those things happened, and then Tyga made off with more than half a mil in merch. The real kick in the gut — she says he started another company with another partner, and cleverly named it … Egypt Kings.

Needless to say, Lee is not amused by the wordplay. She’s suing Tyga and his new partner for $ 1.6 mil, plus damages.

Tyga’s reps tell us, “These, like other allegations, are completely false. This was a business relationship that went sour and was ended last year. We learned of the complaint via TMZ and are aware that individuals will continue to attempt to cash in on Tyga’s success.”

Speaking of success, Birdman is reportedly unhappy with Tyga’s latest album, floundering on the charts.

Gay Man Recalls Homophobic Nurse Trying to Sabotage Baby’s Adoption by Him and His Partner (VIDEO)

2015-06-24-1435173922-7415368-AndyMiller.jpg

I’m From Driftwood is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit archive for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer stories. New stories are posted on the site every Wednesday.

Andy Miller and his partner were having a dream come true: They were about to be parents, and sooner than they realized. Andy explains:

[W]e talked to [the birth mother] on Tuesday. On Wednesday we made a plan to drive down to San Antonio to meet her for dinner, meet her and her family. It went very well. By the time we got back to Austin, we were told that she had picked us, and then on Thursday we were invited to come back down, because she was having a sonogram to figure out the sex of the child.

Within just a week their baby boy was born. While the birth mother was resting with the baby, Andy and his partner took a break from the hospital to get some food. When they returned from eating, they had a flurry of phone messages from the mother, crying and urging them to get back soon. A nurse had been questioning her about her decision to let a gay couple adopt her baby. Andy recalls:

[The nurse] said, “I don’t know how you’re gonna do that. Aren’t you afraid he’s gonna hate you for doing that?”

And she said, “Well, that’s really not any of your business.”

And the nurse just kept going on and on, asking questions about, “Aren’t you afraid those boys are gonna hurt that baby? Aren’t you afraid that he’s not gonna grow up and be normal?”

Fortunately, the birth mother did not fall for the nurse’s fear mongering and still chose Andy and Brian as adoptive parents. From that point on, the day was full of tears — happy ones:

[W]e were sitting down there with my mother and being very calm, trying our best, and when our social worker came off the elevator and just kind of flashed us the [thumbs-up], all three of us just kind of broke down in tears at that point.

9 Things You Can’t Change About Your Partner (So Don’t Even Try)

couple fighting retro

Love can move people to do things they never thought possible: Who among us ever believed they’d find someone worthy of sharing an order of fries? That’s the power of love, people.

As powerful as being in a relationship can be, there are some things that even love can’t change — namely who your partner is at his or her core. Below, experts weigh in with nine things you can’t change about your S.O., as hard as you may try.

1. Her relationship with her family.
You know that saying, “You don’t just marry a person; you marry his or her entire family”? It’s 100 percent true, said Karl Pillemer, a professor of human development at Cornell University and the author of 30 Lessons for Loving: Advice from the Wisest Americans on Love, Relationships, and Marriage

“People’s feelings about their own families are deeply ingrained, and they are not likely to alter significantly after you tie the knot,” Pillemer said. “You can come to compromise, but if your spouse and your family don’t get along, pressing for change is not likely to work. Instead, I’d tell you to give your S.O. a free pass to avoid unnecessary get-togethers. Family togetherness is nice, but not at the expense of your relationship with your partner.”

2. Whether he’s an extrovert or an introvert.

Opposites attract, but only up to a point: Somewhere down the line, you may wish your introverted partner was a little less inclined stay in for yet another night of Netflix — and he very well might wish you’d reign in your social butterfly ways.

“Your partner’s temperament is one thing you really can’t change,” said Samantha Rodman, a licensed psychologist and dating coach. “One great example is whether they are an extrovert, who relaxes by being around others, or an introvert, who relaxes by being alone. People who marry across extrovert/introvert divide will have to accept their partner’s needs for social interaction, or, conversely, for time alone to recharge.”

3. Her hobbies.
When work or family life gets stressful, hobbies and pastimes are what keep us going. Don’t bother trying to change your S.O.’s favorite activities, said relationship coach and writer Chris Armstrong.

“For one thing, your annoyance over their shopping or World of Warcraft love is probably much ado about nothing,” he said. “Individuality is important — we lose ourselves and lose control if hobbies are lost, plus the relationship as a whole can be harmed in the process. As I’ve told a client, if you know that a hobby is a big part of your S.O.’s life but it’s too much of a time-suck in your eyes, you two probably aren’t a good fit.”

4. His anger issues.
Many of us go into relationships believing we can change or fix things we don’t like about our partners. If the the trait in question is your S.O.’s anger issues, holding on to that belief can be downright dangerous.

“Explosive and disproportionate anger is one of the most common reasons people offer up for their marriages going south,” Pillemer said. “It’s an issue that needs to be taken with the utmost seriousness: Beware of a person who has a bad temper, who seems to get angry over nothing and, in particular, a person whose anger seems out of proportion to the situation. This is one personality characteristic that is almost impossible to change.”

5. Her religious beliefs.
While it’s certainly not always the case, having an interfaith relationship when you’re both deeply religious may prove problematic, Rodman said. Much of the time, the problems doesn’t arise until much later in the relationship, when a couple decides to have kids.

“People who were raised going to religious services frequently will often want to resume this practice when they have their own children, even if they didn’t attend services as a younger adult,” she said. “On the flip side, if your partner is an atheist and agnostic, it’s unlikely they’ll become devout believers just by virtue of being with someone with faith.”

6. His need for alone time.

You want to spend every waking moment with him, but he needs his space. You might read the request as hurtful, but consider the silver lining: Time apart often keeps a relationship fresh while ensuring that you both maintain your individuality, said Armstrong.

“When people are always together, they can feel as though the relationship is the only substantive thing going on in their lives,” he explained. “It can cause resentment. People want companionship but they also want meaningful connections and self-reflection to both recharge and keep their relationship fresh. Attempting to change a partner’s desire for alone time is a non-starter.”

7. Her need to plan every last detail.
You meticulously plan every last detail of your life, from when you’re taking your next vacation to when you want to have baby #1. Meanwhile, he’s a take-life-as-it-comes type. The divide may be endearing at first — you complement each other so well! — but eventually, it might become problematic . In any case, you’re not likely to change each other’s way of thinking, said clinical psychologist Jill Weber.

“Usually it is not a case of polar opposites, but rather a difference in degrees,” she said. “Some people are more regulated and are prepared to pay attention to the details of life while others are more likely to go with what they are feeling in the moment. The conflict plays out in a variety of ways — rules for how the children will be raised, spending and saving or even how to spend a weekend. Marriages where people vary strongly in their tolerance for delayed gratification can deteriorate to a condition where all of the energy in the relationship is going to trying to change the other.”

8. His thoughts on having kids.

If someone you’re seeing tells you in a straightforward way their true feelings on having kids, trust them. Moving forward with a relationship in the hopes that they’ll change their mind once you’re married or otherwise committed is a very risky gamble, said Armstrong.

“It’s perfectly reasonable for someone to say, ‘I can see myself having kids with the right partner’ but this is wholly different than someone going from ‘I don’t want kids’ to ‘I want kids,'” he said. “Some people do not want children because of the financial or time commitment required. Others have no desire because they don’t want to be responsible for another human being. Are they going to change? Not likely. Should you want them to? Absolutely not.”

9. Her sense of humor.
Whether or not you both crack up at Louis CK’s potty jokes may seem too minor to make this list, but having a similar sense of humor is more important than you realize.

“Older people I’ve interviewed have told me that some future marital problems can be diagnosed based on the question: ‘Do we think the same things are funny?'” Pillemer said. “Sense of humor is a strong indicator of compatibility. If you laugh at the same things, you are likely to see the world in similar ways. But there’s an even more important reason to take a careful look at your partner’s sense of humor: You will be stuck with it for many, many years. If his idea of high humor involves practical jokes and yours doesn’t, rest assured that you will not find the hand buzzer or the whoopee cushion more hilarious fifty years from now.”

How Should I Talk About My Ex’s New Partner To My Kids?

Reader Reeling writes,

I’m very curious about the introduction of a “person of interest” to kids when one parent is leaving the other parent to pursue their affair (emotional/physical, whatever).  The leaving spouse already has the potential desire of introducing someone new to the kids and the “left” spouse is still trying to figure out what the heck just happened. The kids are still confused and extended family is still reeling. Do morality clauses in parenting agreements do any good here to at least try to prevent overnights when kids are used to mommy and daddy? Do they do any good at all? How does the “left” spouse handle teaching the kids good moral standards when their other parent is exhibiting anything but. How does the left spouse handle the “just trust me to do the right thing” when there is no trust left?… kids are primary/upper grades elementary school aged children.

hand-83079_640

Dear Reeling,

I understand why you’re so upset. It would be hard not to understand. Kudos to you for focusing on your children’s transition and not your own pain. (By the way, you should find a supportive counselor to help you through this difficult time.) There are plenty of ways to ensure that your kids have the best transition possible, and one of them is letting go of what you cannot and should not control. If your ex had an affair, then he already has a relationship with some woman. It is likely it has been going on for a while, and if he left you for her, it’s serious. So you’re right that he will probably want to introduce her very soon, and then they will likely live together if not marry, and then the overnights will be constant. And before that they may be constant too.

This may be difficult for you to deal with, but what are your choices here? You can’t stop him from having a relationship. You can try to make some parenting agreement clause but usually those exclude serious relationships/fiances (and so he will likely just propose to her if she’s that important and if you give him an ultimatum like that). Your best bet is to focus only on your kids and their transition. Discuss with them that daddy may have another partner, and she will probably be very nice, and they should try to enjoy their time with her. There is absolutely no up side and only down sides to making your kids dislike this person. She may be their stepmother and it would be horrible for them to start off on a bad foot with her.

On a more important note, your ex’s poor choices when it comes to cheating on you do not have anything to do with his ability to be a good dad. He is right that you need to trust him — not with your own heart but with the hearts of your kids. If he behaves egregiously, like getting drunk around them or having loud sex with his new girlfriend, you can intervene at that point. But if he is anywhere in the realm of normal, he is worried about the kids’ transition too, and will be trying to be a good dad. You don’t have much of a choice but to trust him, so try to focus on his positives as a dad.

You need to realize that anything you do in this situation will affect your children, and you have the power to either make sure they remain close to their dad, or you could singlehandedly alienate them from him. Read this post about a reader whose parents trash talked one another, and the terrible effect on her. Read this one about how parents (even when still together) can mess up their kids by causing the kids to side with one parent against the other.

I am not saying you are going to alienate your kids from their dad. But I am concerned by what you call his “lack of morality.” If you mention this, or if you so much as roll your eyes about your kids’ dad in their presence, they are going to pick up on it and may start to view him as a bad person. This means that they will view themselves as created by a bad person, which means they will have low self esteem. Through whatever therapy and conversations with friends and family and whatever other self-care you need to do, you need to put on a game face in front of your kids and only mention the positive parts of dad. And if your extended family mentions anything bad about your ex in front of your kids, you need to stop them from doing that right away.

So, basically, you have to trust your ex to do the right thing, while you raise your kids however you would have before all this. On top of this, you have to focus on the positive parts of your kids’ dad and mention those parts out loud. Encourage them to love him. It is the best thing you can do as a mom and your kids will learn whatever they need to about your ex as they become adults. For now, loving him is the healthiest thing they can do, and you must facilitate and support them in their love of him and their trust in him, even if it nearabout kills you. (As I mentioned before, now would be a good time to start seeing a therapist who can guide you through this.)

Good luck and keep me updated. And till we meet again, I remain, The Blogapist Who Says, Stay Strong!
