Spike Lee connects past to urgent present in ‘BlacKkKlansman’

Spike Lee films can be guilty of feeling didactic, but the material suits the message — and the director’s passion — in “BlacKkKlansman,” a fiery, wild true story infused by an overt cautionary warning that the past could be prologue. Tense, provocative and entertaining, it’s not clear how well the movie will age, but Lee’s latest joint feels tailor-made for the current moment.

The Charlottesville Fake News Was the Best Persuasion Play of the Past Year

Now that some time has passed, and emotions have subsided a bit, I can tell you about the best persuasion play of the past year. The credit goes to the anti-Trump media. They convinced much of the world that the President of the United States referred to a bunch of racists with tiki torches in Charlottesville as “fine people.”

What President Trump did say is that some “fine people” were at the event. I see only two ways to interpret that statement. One interpretation is completely ordinary and the other is batshit crazy. The batshit crazy interpretation is the one the anti-Trump media persuaded you is the real one. They would have you believe that the President of the United States publicly and unabashedly sided with self-labelled racists who were chanting anti-Jewish slogans. We are asked to believe President Trump took sides with the anti-semitic chanters despite having a Jewish daughter, Jewish grandkids, Jewish son-in-law, and several Jewish top advisors. We also know President Trump is so popular in Israel that they are considering naming a train station after him. And Netanyahu gets along with President Trump great. Probably has something to do with President Trump’s decision to move the American embassy to Jerusalem.

Amazingly, the anti-Trump media successfully persuaded half the public in this country that President Trump intentionally and publicly took sides with racists who have intense hatred for his family and close advisors. President Trump clarified soon after his first statement on Charlottesville that he disavowed the racists. But the haters didn’t believe it. They were locked in their hallucination bubble.

Let’s compare two interpretations of President Trump’s “fine people” statement.

Batshit Crazy Interpretation: President Trump is so dumb, and so racist, that he decided to publicly side with racists against his own family and his closest advisors. And yet, while being so dumb, he somehow succeeded in multiple fields and became President of the United States with no prior experience. This interpretation also requires that Israel, his family, and his closest advisors are so dumb that they haven’t noticed how racist President Trump is against them.

or…

Totally Ordinary Interpretation: President Trump assumed there were some non-racist Republicans at the event for their own reasons, such as supporting historical landmarks, or supporting free speech no matter how awful it is. And he was right, although there were not many of them. Here’s a clip of some “fine people” who were in attendance. They say they like free speech and they hate racists.

We all know President Trump has a track record of speaking out on a variety of topics without having all the details. That’s one of the few things that both his supporters and his detractors can agree on. So compare the hypothesis that he decided to side with racists against the interests of his own family, in public, while President, to the hypothesis that he thought (correctly) that some non-racist Republicans were also in attendance.

Which of those two versions of events seems most likely to you?

Is it even close?

Man tries to distinguish an apple from a banana and fails

I don’t blame the public for falling for this well-orchestrated persuasion scheme by the anti-Trump media. Their collective persuasion on this point has been solid. Lately, the people opposing Trump simply list Charlottesville as one of the many “proofs” of his racism, as if no further explanation is needed. I can’t tell if the pundits believe their own interpretations or if they simply think the public will. It would look the same.

I propose a test to see if anti-Trump news professionals and pundits who consider Charlottesville as proof of President Trump’s racism will commit to their positions in public. You can test this at home with your Trump-hating friends. Simply print out my blog post and ask them to read the two interpretations I listed and ask them to tell you which one seems most likely. If your subject tries to change the topic, you have your answer.

I predict that 100% of people who believe President Trump called racists “fine people” will change the subject as soon as you make them read the two competing interpretations of events in close proximity. That’s your tell.

And if you want to rub it in, ask your Trump-hating subjects if they believe President Trump would NOT have pursued the birther issue against a white opponent if the opportunity had been the same. Remind your subject that President Trump uses every weapon available to him, all the time, no matter what. He not only accused Ted Cruz of being born in Canada but he suggested Cruz’ father might have been in on assassinating Kennedy.

I tested the birther argument today on Twitter when a critic brought it up. He changed the subject.

Enjoy!

I started a Patreon account to fund — via micro-donations as low as one dollar — the expansion of my Periscope content on the topic of persuasion, usually about politics. Step One involves converting my Periscope videos into audio-only podcast form for greater reach. That work is in progress. I’ll work on topic indexes next, and perhaps topic summaries in text form. YouTube is a lower priority because fans already post my Periscopes there. At some point I might do that myself.

Patreon funding will motivate me to express my opinions as often as practical without worrying about the sensibilities of sponsors, advertisers, or corporate bosses. I appreciate all of you who are making this happen.

Thinking Past the Sale – Trump Persuasion Series

Trump issued a series of five tweets in quick succession as a response to the controversy over the Obama-birther guy at the Trump event.

Why five tweets?

I assume the two-dimensional chess pundits will tell you it is a sign of desperation from a campaign that was always destined to flame out. Sure looks like a guy grasping at straws, right?

Maybe it is.

The Master Wizard Hypothesis has another filter on this. According to this way of thinking, Trump just made you think about which of several reasons you will choose to agree with him.

He made you think past the sale.

And to get there he said at least one, maybe two, things you agree with. That’s pacing. It is a tell.

On the Master Wizard scale, this was an A+ performance in engineered persuasion. Will it be enough?

Depends what the Master Wizard in the White House does next.

Reminder

I remind readers that the Master Wizard Hypothesis is for entertainment, not enlightenment. Truth is at a different URL. All we are doing here is seeing how well the data fits the hypothesis, especially for predictions. This is just for fun. And yes, I am forcing the data to fit the hypothesis. That is the whole point. You should do the same with whatever hypothesis you prefer as an explanation of Trump’s success so far. Then compare. None of this should be confused with science.

Kate Winslet On Her Past Marriages: ‘No One Really Knows What Has Happened’

Kate Winslet is twice divorced but you’re not likely to hear the “Titanic” star talk about what went wrong in either marriage.

There’s a reason for that. In a new interview with the WSJ. Magazine, the 39-year-old Oscar winner said she made a concerted effort to keep the details of her personal life under wraps when she divorced director Jim Threapleton in 2001 and ”American Beauty” director Sam Mendes in 2010. (She married third husband Ned Rocknroll in 2012.)

“No one really knows what has happened in my life,” she told the magazine. “No one really knows why my first marriage didn’t last; no one knows why my second didn’t. And I’m proud of those silences.”

Winslet, who has a child from each of her marriages, also discussed how she’s dealt with public interest in her marital setbacks.

“I know lots of people who are not in the public eye who have gone through several marriages, I really do, and it’s just those are the cards that life dealt me,” she said. “I didn’t plan on its being that way . And f– me, it hasn’t been easy, you know.”

Winslet may try to keep her private life private, but she couldn’t help but rave about third husband Rocknroll – the nephew of Virgin magnate Richard Branson.

“Thank God for Ned — really. He’s just so incredibly supportive, and he’s so much fun. He’s absolutely everything to me. And to all of us.”

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar U.K. back in 2013, Winslet called Rocknroll — who was born Edward Abel Smith before legally changing his name – her “soulmate.”

Getting Married Past This Age Increases Your Risk Of Divorce, Research Suggests

Want to get married and stay married? Don’t rush to get hitched when you’re young — but don’t wait too long, either. Once you’re past your early 30s, the risk of divorce starts to creep up again, according to new analysis.

Nicholas Wolfinger, a sociologist at the University of Utah, looked at data from the National Survey of Family Growth and found that while the risk of divorce declines steadily from your teens into your late 20s — it starts to rise again somewhere in your 30s

Once you reach the age of 32, the odds of getting a divorce increase by 5 percent each year

As Wolfinger breaks it down on the Institute For Family Studies blog, “Those who tie the knot after their early thirties are now more likely to divorce than those who marry in their late 20s.”

Wolfinger writes that it’s “no mystery” why those who marry as teens face a higher risk of divorce: most of us don’t have the coping skills or maturity to deal with marriage in our teens or early 20s, he suggests — and marrying young correlates with lower educational attainment, which increases the risk for divorce regardless of age

But why does waiting until you’re well into your 30s increase the odds? Shouldn’t you be better equipped to handle the stresses of marriage the older you get?

The researcher isn’t entirely sure but suggests it might have something to do with what he calls the “selection effect”: those who wait to wed may be the type of people who just aren’t cut out for marriage. Ouch

“They delay marriage, often because they can’t find anyone willing to marry them,” Wolfinger explains in his blog. “When they do tie the knot, their marriages are automatically at high risk for divorce. More generally, perhaps people who marry later face a pool of potential spouses that has been winnowed down to exclude the individuals most predisposed to succeed at matrimony”

The Huffington Post reached out to Wolfinger for comment but he did not reply by the time of publication.

For those of you suddenly feeling like you just. can’t. win regardless of when you decide to marry, take heart: This is just a statistical analysis based on general trends and may not reflect your personal experience. And overall, the divorce rate in the U.S. continues to drop from its peak in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Phew.

Dylann Roof Slipped Past FBI Background Check To Buy Gun

Dylann Roof, the 21-year-old white man accused of killing nine people in a Charleston, S.C. church, shouldn’t have been allowed to purchase the gun he used in the crime. According to the FBI, Roof was able to slip past a criminal background check due to a loophole in the system and obtained the .45-caliber handgun.

The New York Times reports that the FBI came forward and admitted that its National Instant Criminal Background Check System failed to prevent Roof from buying the gun from a South Carolina arms dealer. It was previously reported that according to Roof’s uncle, his father purchased the gun for his son. However, the Times is writing that Roof purchased the gun after he was initially marked as a red flag case prior to receiving it.

From the Times:

Mr. Roof first tried to buy the gun on April 11, from a dealer in South Carolina. The F.B.I., which conducts background checks for gun sales, told the dealer not to proceed with the purchase because agents needed to do more investigating about Mr. Roof’s s criminal history.

Under federal law, the F.B.I. has three days to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to deny the purchase. If the bureau cannot come up with an answer, the purchaser can return to the dealer and buy the gun.

In the case of Mr. Roof, his application was not resolved in three days and he returned to store and was sold the gun. The F.B.I. said the delay was the product of a breakdown in communication between federal agents and local authorities in South Carolina.

A Washington Post report from June explained how Roof was arrested and charged for narcotic drug possession back in February of this year, which would have made it impossible for him to buy a gun in the first place. How the story is being framed now is that Roof did indeed purchase the gun himself.

FBI Director James Comey expressed his disappointment regarding Roof and the background check slip-up.

Country music struggles with its Confederate flag past

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Country artists are struggling to articulate their feelings about the Confederate flag's history and symbolism amid heightened debate following the recent massacre at a South Carolina church. The killing of nine churchgoers on June 17 has renewed calls for the emblem to be removed from government displays — South Carolina's House approved a bill early Thursday to pull it down from the front lawn of the Capitol there — as well …

When her marriage ended in divorce after 10 years, Carol Schaffer wasn’t eager for a fresh start. Still shaken up by the split, Schaffer said she held tight to the people and pastimes she loved and only introduced new things into her life (hiking, “Seinfeld” binge-fests) if they helped her heal in some way.

“You can’t change everything about your life right away after a separation,” Schaffer, who lives in California, recently told The Huffington Post. “Some people are tempted to make all kinds of changes to themselves and their lives right away, but I took the most comfort in the things that stayed the same like cooking big dinners and having sit-down meals with my kids.”

Below, Schaffer shares five things (some tried-and-true, some new) that made life a little more bearable during her divorce.

The Most Iconic Faces To Inspire Men’s Grooming Over the Past 30 Years

This article was written by Emma McKay and was originally published on AskMen.

On a crisp late January evening in Paris, in a sprawling bar, Le Perchoir, spanning several stories high above the streets of the 11th arrondissement, pro kiteboarder Youri Zoon ambles in for his interview. As we talk, the bar fills up with a who’s who of Parisian cool, posing for photos and sipping bespoke cocktails: fashion industry savants, women in faux fur and big felt hats, avant-garde musicians. We’re here to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Biotherm Homme, a high-end French skincare brand (disclosure: I was there as a guest of Biotherm Homme).

Youri’s passionate about his sport, and his enthusiasm shines through in his lack of canned responses. We talk about kiteboarding more than we do moisturizer. As the face of Biotherm Homme’s Total Recharge line and the subject of the brand’s new 360-degree Oculus Rift video (shot using six GoPros strapped to his head), Zoon’s life exposes him to all the punishment that wind, salt and sun can bring. Between his extreme activities and frequent air travel, Zoon’s skin is no stranger to fatigue and dehydration — this guy legitimately needs cold weather skin care.

Biotherm Homme’s choice of Zoon over a more recognizable celeb or model got me thinking about the kinds of men who’ve appeared in grooming campaigns over the years. How do brand ambassadors reflect men’s evolving attitudes toward grooming? I decided to take a closer look at some of the most iconic faces from the past 30 years of marketing grooming products to men. I’ve included men’s underwear ads in this roundup because, as intimate and personal products that haven’t always been marketed directly to men, they follow a similar trajectory to grooming ads, addressing men’s appearance-related aspirations through a focus on the male physique of the moment.

Putting Men In The Picture

In 1985, when Biotherm Homme’s first product, an anti-wrinkle cream for men, launched, only about a quarter of all men’s products were actually purchased by men, so marketing campaigns for men’s grooming products inevitably targeted women.

Women were still the focus in 1990, when Chanel launched a campaign for its new men’s cologne, Egoiste, in which the male subject never actually shows his face. The ads represented a shift for the brand. Arie Kopelman, then-president and chief operating officer of Chanel, spoke to the New York Times in 1991 about the campaign, explaining that, “The focus has always been on the women’s products. Until now, we’ve never put any marketing power behind the men’s fragrances.”

Mark Wahlberg for Calvin Klein, 1992

2015-03-27-1427487474-8797763-markwahlberg.jpg

In 1992, long before Bieber ever slunk around in CK boxers, Calvin Klein introduced Mark “Marky Mark” Wahlberg into its campaigns, and the rapper/actor’s abs as captured by the late legend Herb Ritts helped sexualize — and popularize — something as previously mundane as men’s underwear. Then-Calvin Klein Senior VP Neil Kraft, who was behind the Wahlberg campaign, recently explained to AdAge: “[Wahlberg] appealed to women, he appealed to gay men and he appealed to men who wanted to be him.” The campaign had a massive impact on the men’s underwear industry, boosting sales “exponentially.”

Tyson Beckford for Polo, 1993

2015-03-27-1427487499-8264717-TysonBeckford.jpg

With their Tyson Beckford campaigns, the all-American Polo Ralph Lauren brand introduced a face and a muscular, sculpted physique who could play Marky Mark’s game while giving the alpha male a distinctive new look. Beckford helped define the ’90s, to the point that in 2014 he was named by Vogue as the No. 1 male model of all time.

Larry Scott for Acqua di Gio, 1997-2007

2015-03-27-1427487579-4356191-LarryScott.jpg

Larry Scott was the face of Armani’s Acqua di Gio for a decade. He pioneered the now-iconic “wet guy” look, and it’s been a go-to for marketing men’s fragrances ever since. We don’t really know if he’s been rolling around on a beach, if he just surfaced from a deep dive or if he just stepped out of the shower, and it doesn’t really matter — we see the wet guy up close, with beads of water trickling down his face. He must smell good.

David Beckham for Armani, 2008

2015-03-27-1427487546-9758015-DavidBeckham.jpg

David Beckham was the face of Armani, and just about everything else, in the late 2000s. “The biggest metrosexual in Britain,” according to the man who coined the term, was also husband to a woman successful in her own right, a tattooed father and a legendary retired soccer player. Appearing in ads for Pepsi, Samsung, Adidas and Burger King, H&M and more, he represented the male ideal on an international scale: accomplished and attractive, with rebellious sex appeal. His signature scent, Intimately Beckham for Him, which launched in 2006, was one of the first male celebrity scents on the market.

Clive Owen for Bvlgari Man, 2010

2015-03-27-1427487608-5394885-CliveOwen.jpg

With its campaigns featuring Clive Owen, who had appeared in ads for Lancôme’s Hypnose Homme just three years earlier, Bvlgari Man also drew upon the actor’s power as a credible influencer. His poses in these ads are relaxed; they present him as a multidimensional, interesting guy, somebody you could see yourself having a drink with.

Isaiah Mustafa for Old Spice, 2010

2015-03-27-1427487632-1902003-IsaiahMustafa.jpg

Isaiah Mustafa’s Old Spice ads helped usher in the viral internet era with a memorably big splash of aftershave. The zany ads got people talking, and that meant they were talking about Old Spice — a brand many guys previously identified with their grandfathers — again. Brut retaliated that same year with its “Slap a man in a towel” “Brut slap” online campaign, in which a man somewhat resembling Mustafa, wearing a towel, could be slapped via a click of a mouse.

Michael Phelps for Head and Shoulders, 2012

2015-03-27-1427487656-3216691-MichaelPhelps.jpg

In recent years, companies began to select athletes over models and celebrities to promote men’s grooming products, and these athletes don’t all resemble David Beckham. As men who actually sweat, smell and expose themselves to the elements on a regular basis, athletes provided a more authentic opportunity to connect with men around the topic of male grooming needs.

At the Biotherm Homme party in Paris, Bixente Lizerazu, a current face of Biotherm Homme and a retired champion soccer star, explained to me how he witnessed grooming catch on in locker rooms: “It happened gradually, little by little, first of all in the changing rooms after training sessions, suddenly you noticed guys using creams. At first it was a little bit funny, or awkward, but it changed.” Brands seized on the opportunity to connect high-performance athletes with their products, especially when the opportunity was the 2012 Olympic Games, an event that had the entire world’s attention.

Ryan Lochte for Gillette, 2012

2015-03-27-1427487676-3922874-RyanLochte.jpg

Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte were just two of 150 top athletes sponsored by P&G, the parent company of brands like Gillette and Head & Shoulders, at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Like the Old Spice example, this Gillette campaign is the unmistakeable product of a viral internet era, hashtags and all.

Dwyane Wade for Dove Men+Care, 2013

2015-03-27-1427487700-789679-DwyaneWade.jpg

In 2013, as consumers tired of the “doofus dad” archetype they’d been served for years, brands took realness and relatability to a whole new level. Dove Men+Care worked with NBA star Dwyane Wade and ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas for 2013’s “Real Moments” campaign, presenting an image of hands-on fatherhood that speaks to modern guys. Dwyane Wade appears at home, with his kids, a natural setting in which he’s not being presented as a useless dad or an unattainable hero, taking the locker-room endorsement to a place that really hits home.

Juan Betancourt for Tom Ford, 2013

2015-03-27-1427487724-6216678-JuanBetancourt.jpg

The interesting thing about model Juan Betancourt in this 2013 Tom Ford ad is that he has a facial hair. In 2013, we were deep in a “peak beard” moment (and it isn’t over yet). The interesting thing about this ad campaign is that, although this particular image recalls the “wet man” look we’re so used to seeing in men’s grooming ads, other images in the campaign show Betancourt actively grooming himself — wearing a clay mask in one image, applying an under-eye cream in another. “For the first time ever,” Josh Meyer, CEO of Brickell Men’s Products, points out, “starting in 2013, men spent more on skincare products than they did on shaving products.” No question about it: men’s grooming has gone mainstream.

Jonas Kessler for John Varvatos, 2014

2015-03-27-1427487747-3732935-JonasKessler.jpg

In this ad, part of his 2014 campaign for John Varvatos, the bearded Jonas Kessler may be shirtless, but his frame is not nearly as “ripped” as a Wahlberg, Beckford or Beckham. The diversification of the kinds of images used to sell men’s grooming products reflects the diversification of the market in general. Explains Meyer, “The larger an industry, the more fragmented and specific it gets.”

Whereas just a few years earlier, men might have been self-conscious to admit any involvement with grooming products, at this point, men are legitimately interested in the benefits of looking their best. They want to look “well-groomed, tan, [with] less wrinkles, fuller hair, [have] no [or] less acne, smooth silky skin and anti-aging options,” according to Larry H. Oskin, president and founder of Marketing Solutions, a marketing agency specialized in the beauty industry. As Meyer points out, “younger men (ages 25-40)… grew up using hair gel and other ‘metro’ hair products for men, so using skincare is a natural evolution.”

Check out the original AskMen article to find out which how men’s grooming is being represented in ads in 2015.

SAE Failing At Attempts To Destroy Links To Confederate Past

The Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity’s good name has been effectively dragged through the mud after the revelation of the OU SAE racist chant video. Now it appears that the national SAE is attempting to remove connections to its pro-Confederate past in light of the spectacle that appeared in the viral clip.

Despite the SAE’s public stance that the Greek-letter organization is not racist, it appears that some links to a past that supported racism and segregation did exist. The team over at Gawker did some expert digging and found that the key language on the SAE’s website has been scrubbed but, as most know, the Internet is forever.

Using the Wayback Machine, Gawker was able to pull up cached pages from the page and noted the epic differences. Prior to this, Think Progress highlighted the SAE’s proud boasting of its connection to the Confederacy and the founding of the fraternity during the Antebellum period.

More from Gawker:

Prior to this week, SAE’s official website was open and proud about its deep connection to America’s confederate states. Here is how the site’s “History” page opened prior to this week:

‘Sigma Alpha Epsilon was founded on March 9, 1856, at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Its founders were Noble Leslie DeVotie, Nathan Elams Cockrell, John Barratt Rudulph, John Webb Kerr, Samuel Marion Dennis, Wade Hampton Foster, Abner Edwin Patton, and Thomas Chappell Cook. Their leader was DeVotie, who wrote the ritual, created the grip, and chose the name. Rudulph designed the badge. Of all existing national social fraternities today, Sigma Alpha Epsilon is the only national fraternity founded in the antebellum South.’

That is pulled from the Wayback Machine, which last archived the page on Feb. 3 of this year. If you visit it now, you’ll notice that the final sentence—which touts SAE as the only one of America’s fraternities formed in the antebellum South—has been lopped off completely.

As history notes, the Antebellum period in the confederate states was a time of high wealth sparked by the insistence of those within the Confederacy to uphold slavery and ignore the wishes of the Union in the north. The deep wounds of Jim Crow segregation and discrimination have endured since then, and the SAE wasn’t shy about being born from that period where Blacks were severely oppressed.

Time will tell if the SAE will bounce back from this flurry of controversy, but it looks bleak thus far.

Gays of Future Past

For anyone under 30, it may be difficult to imagine a time when the gay-rights movement wasn’t operating at a milestone-a-minute pace. From Michael Sam’s “kiss seen ’round the world” to states like Oregon, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin tripping over themselves to let same-sex couples walk down the aisle, change is occurring at such a remarkable pace that it is difficult to contextualize how far we’ve come. Just 45 years ago gays had little choice but to quietly rise above the separate-but-inherently-unequal pre-Stonewall era. And it was only a generation ago that HIV demonstrated just how M.I.A. government and society could be — as long as the plague was knocking on someone else’s door. People who lived during these times were warriors on the front lines of history, but today the pace of change threatens to wash away the past in the eyes of a new generation. Fortunately a wave of artistic and media projects has emerged to remind us of these heroes, to refocus us on the type of activism that helped elevate the LGBT movement and to inspire us to make that final push.

How to Survive a Plague is the best documentary you’ve never seen. David France’s 2013 Oscar-nominated film uses archival video footage to tell the tale of the early days of the HIV struggle, where everyday-Joes-turned-activists Peter Staley, Bob Rafsky and Mark Harrington refused to play victims, taught themselves how to read medical journals and brazenly led the national conversation on treatment and prevention. Plague demonstrates how perseverance and the sheer desire to live can mobilize even the most intractable members of society, save Ed Koch and Ronald Reagan.

Next, Ryan Murphy’s much-ballyhooed adaptation of Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart provides a polished and effective complement to Plague‘s grainy documentary. That the story was even green-lit at all (it famously sat on Barbra Streisand’s desk untouched for 20 years) was due to Mr. Murphy’s sense of urgency and the foresight and finances of HBO, a company whose pioneering project development has done as much to expose the nation to the plight of the LGBT community as any non-for-profit or government entity. The Normal Heart, Kramer’s mostly autobiographical but fictionalized account of the early days of AIDS, conjures the ghosts of Fire Island past so that their struggles remain relevant and instructive.

Together these two films do more than share the story of AIDS with those who were either too young to understand or not yet born: They serve as a de facto master class in Activism 101. The AIDS epidemic rallied the gay community, bringing gay people out of the shadows with a vision, a voice and an in-your-face crusade that redefined the struggle for equality.

Of course, AIDS activists would never have had the tools to organize without following the playbook of those who had committed to the struggle before them. It is with this fact in mind that StoryCorps, the nation’s leading oral history project, created OutLoud, an LGBTQ project that aims to capture the stories of those who lived during the pre-Stonewall era. “What we are trying to do,” said Dave Issay, the founder and president of StoryCorps, “is to introduce the entire country to the lives, stories, struggles and victories of the LGBT community.” If exposure elicits change, then OutLoud is poised to become as much a vehicle for progress as it is a collection of stories. “The personal stories are the best way to move hearts and minds, much more so than statistics, and certainly hand-in-hand with the important litigation and advocacy work; it’s the human stories that in part have driven things forward.”

Fortunately StoryCorps will not be standing alone at the Stonewall tea dance. Openly gay German director Roland Emmerich, best known for popcorn blockbusters like Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, is also set to put his imprimatur on LGBT liberation by tackling 1969’s “little protest that could” in the upcoming film Stonewall. Emmerich was 14 years old at the time of the Stonewall riots, an event that no doubt left an indelible impression on the filmmaker. With the understanding that our window into the Stonewall generation is closing fast, Emmerich is taking a break from blowing up the world to blow up some minds instead. His timing couldn’t be better.

Not every entry in the modern canon of LGBT media is transcendent. For all the hype surrounding Dallas Buyers Club, it was, at its core, the story of a straight bigot who only turns to the gay community out of desperation — and for profit. And if you base your knowledge of the history of marriage equality on Jo Becker’s Forcing the Spring, you might naively draw the conclusion that the movement started itself a few years ago. While victors indeed get to write history, social movements are not won by spiking the football at the 50-yard line.

People can still get fired in 29 states for their sexual orientation (and in 32 states for their gender identity), and same-sex couples cannot get married anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line and, depending on their zip code, may have great difficulty raising a family. ENDA passed the U.S. Senate last November but — spoiler alert! — has hit a “dead ENDA” in the House of Representatives. Forty percent of all homeless youth in the United States are LGBTQ, and 400,000 children remain in foster care while many states make it difficult for gay couples to adopt. The last time I witnessed a victory this incomplete, President Bush was standing under a “Mission Accomplished” banner.

It is critical for young people today to understand how gay men and women of the 20th century were able to overcome the mightiest of obstacles, and these projects have made these experiences wonderfully accessible. Listen to the OutLoud interviews. Rent How to Survive a Plague. Unpeel the layers of The Normal Heart. The gays of future past have given us the rules of engagement, and now it’s up to us to see the mission through. So skip that next dinner out and volunteer with the Hetrick-Martin Institute, host of the Harvey Milk School. Volunteer for the Trevor Project and slow the tide of suicide in LGBTQ youth. Come to Provincetown for Family Equality Council‘s Family Week and watch how loving and inspirational gay families are. Get involved with Freedom to Marry, because Evan Wolfson is the godfather of marriage equality, and 19 states isn’t the end zone. Support the Treatment Action Group, and donate your old furniture to Housing Works, because there is still no cure for AIDS. Non-engagement is not an option, and President Obama can’t do it all for us.

In an age of ubiquitous techo-activism, some messages are just too important to deliver in 140 characters or less. With a dose of old-school engagement — and perhaps a few more HBO projects — someday soon the pride parade will take a page from St. Patrick and become an exercise in fabulous redundancy, transgender people will walk down the street without causing whiplash, and my children will be able to introduce their two daddies at school without the requisite reading of And Tango Makes Three. Until then, let’s keep the champagne on ice.

Toni Braxton Once Believed God Gave Her Son Autism Because Of Her Past Abortion

In her new memoir, aptly titled “Unbreak My Heart,” singer Toni Braxton opens up about a painful memory from her past.

The 46-year-old Grammy winner wrote about an abortion she had in 2001 and how she once believed God had later punished her for it. “I was suddenly faced with a choice I’d never thought I’d have to make,” Braxton wrote of the procedure. “Amid my major misgivings about abortion, I eventually made the gut-wrenching decision.”

Due to her very religious upbringing — in the memoir the singer says that studying the Bible took precedence over homework when growing up — Braxton began to feel a strong sense of guilt over the abortion. “In my heart, I believed I had taken a life — an action that I thought God might one day punish me for … My initial rage was quickly followed by another strong emotion: guilt,” she wrote. Braxton’s guilt was so heavy that she began to believe that God’s punished her for the procedure by giving her son, Diezel Ky Braxton-Lewis, now 11-years-old, autism. “I believed God’s payback was to give my son autism,” she wrote.

However, the R&B music icon told Us Weekly that she now feels differently about her past. “When my youngest son was diagnosed with autism I feared that I was being punished for my earlier actions. I have since realized that my son is special and learns in a different way.”
