Performance Driven: The Best Highlights From Apple’s WWDC 2018 Event

Apple CEO Tim Cook Kicks Off Worldwide Developers Conference

Source: Justin Sullivan / Getty

Today (June 4), led by Tim Cook, Apple held their annual WWDC event, and the focus was entirely on improving the performance of their products with iOS 12, watchOS 5, macOS Mojave and Apple TV. We break down the best highlights from the highlights from the event.

iOS 12

Apple’s software VP, Craig Federighi made it entirely clear to the attendees in the room that “for iOS 12, we are doubling down on performance.” Being that recent iOS updates have been very buggy lately this focus is warranted. There are definitely some new additions, changes, and improvements coming to your iPhone, IPads worth looking forward too.

Screen Time

Google introduced its digital well-being dashboard called Android P which wants to help users limit their phone use. Apple is aiming for the same with its new Screen Time feature which breaks down exactly how much you are using your iPhone and individual apps. Like Android P it will allow you to set a time limit for each app which will warn you when you are about hit your time limit and hit you with a “time’s up” message once the timer runs out.

Group FaceTime

If you always wanted to be able to facetime more than just one friend at one time the good folks at Apple have heard your cry. Thanks to iOS 12, you can now start a Facetime session that will feature up to 32 people. Now why you would want to be a part of a group text but with video is beyond us. We can see this feature being beneficial for conference calls maybe.

Photos

Apple is taking another page out of Google’s book with how iOS 12 will handle and store your photos. iOS 12 will now offer search suggestions, filter and effect suggestions as well as suggesting which friends to share the photo with. Honestly, something you similarly experience if you utilize Google Photo’s app BUT if you don’t want to download a Google on your iPhone (there are people like this) this update is for you.

Siri Gets An Upgrade

Apple is allowing third-party developers more integration with Siri giving them the ability to create shortcuts for the favorite digital assistant.

Lil Wayne Issues An Apology to His Fans For Backing Out of His Rolling Loud Performance

Source: Lil’ Wayne performs during the ‘Pink Friday Tour’ at the James L. Knight Center Miami, Florida – 24.07.12 Where: United States When: 24 Jul 2012 Credit: Aaron Gilbert/ WENN

This past Sunday night (May 13) Lil Wayne was scheduled to take the stage as the headliner for the Rolling Loud festival but much to the dismay of his fans, Weezy was a no show.

Just a few days before Weezy was spotted turning up at LIV with his former “daddy,” Birdman as they continue to repair their personal relationship while trying to get their business end straight.

Instagram Photo

Knowing he’d disappointed a gang of Weezy loyalists, the pint sized rapper took to Twitter to apologize to his fan base who’d attended the event to see his dreds whip around on stage only to go home empty handed.

Well at least he apologized for missing out. These days fans are putting hands on rappers crews for backing out of their contractual duties.

The festival also decided to put out a statement on the situation and reminded fans that even without Wayne, they have a pretty deep lineup scheduled.

Last night, Lil Wayne fell unexpectedly ill ahead of his set time and had to cancel his appearance at Rolling Loud Miami. We apologize to the fans and hope that some of the special guest appearances throughout the weekend, such as Meek Mill, Nicki Minaj, Diddy, A$ AP Rocky, hometown hero DJ Khaled, the Waffle House Hero, and the two baristas fired by Duke made for an enjoyable experience. We have a longstanding and healthy partnership with Lil Wayne and his team, and look forward to continuing to work with him and having him on a Rolling Loud stage in the near future.

But for anyone hoping to catch a Weezy show they should be looking forward to Lil Weezyana Fest this summer in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Wayne’s fan favorite album, Tha Carter III.

Bill Murray Tees Up Performance Golf Blazer

Feeling the need to dress up on the golf course? Bill Murray has the answer.
The actor and avid golfer — who carries an enviable 7.2 handicap — has created what is being billed as the first performance blazer to be worn on the links.
On Thursday, William Murray Golf, a company created last fall by Bill Murray and his brothers, will unveil the Serious Business Tartan Blazer in the Murray family tartan pattern along with pants to match. The two-button, single-vent blazer is made from 95 percent polyester and 5 percent spandex in a two-way stretch shell and a four-way stretch lining. The blazer also offers UPF 50+ sun protection, is moisture-wicking and wrinkle-resistant.
It will retail for $ 210 on the William Murray Golf site.
The jacket is just the latest irreverent twist from the William Murray Golf collection, which has attracted high-profile investors such as Andy Roddick, Brooklyn Decker, Kendra Scott and others.
The line features plaid panels on shorts with a golf club pattern, camouflage polos and tropical mum patterns on button-down shirts. The collection was created “on the notion that life and golf don’t have to be so serious. Keep it light, have fun and bring personality onto the course.”

Maria Grazia Chiuri Designs Costumes for Guggenheim Dance Performance

When “Falls the Shadow,” a new dance production commissioned by Works & Process and created by American Ballet Theatre principal Daniil Simkin, debuts in the famous rotunda of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York on Sept. 4, the dancers will be wearing costumes specially designed for the performance by Maria Grazia Chiuri of Dior.
To some extent, the rotunda is where the design process began, nearly a year prior, when Chiuri cochaired the Guggenheim International Gala, hosted by Dior. “Basically, we approached Maria Grazia at the gala,” said Simkin. “Obviously Dior was the primary fashion house we wanted to work with.”
The choreography and staging required special considerations, as “Falls the Shadow” will be performed in the rotunda with the audience standing on the ramps surrounding it for an aerial view. Additionally, the dancers’ movements will be captured in real-time by motion sensors, generating 3-D, mapped projections on the rotunda to connect technology, music, fashion and dance.
Chiuri attended a rehearsal in New York and Simkin and the production team sent her videos of the choreography and 3-D mapping to give her an idea of what the costumes would require. “What’s special about the piece is that it’s going to be

Drake’s Manager Says Apple Did Not Block Performance; Tidal Claims To Have Proof

(AllHipHop News) Lil Wayne’s attempt to show love to his city by hosting the first Lil Weezyana Fest appeared to turn into the latest battle between Apple and Tidal. When Drake hit the stage at the New Orleans event, the live stream on Tidal shut down.

[ALSO READ: Drake’s Performance At ‘Lil Weezyana Fest’ Blocked From Streaming On Tidal Due To Apple Interference]

The Jay Z fronted company accused Apple of blocking Tidal from streaming Drake. According to reports, Apple threatened to sue Tidal for $ 20 million if the Toronto entertainer appeared on the platform.

Drake signed a reported $ 19 million exclusive deal with the tech giant’s new streaming service Apple Music. However, team Drizzy claimed Apple had nothing to do with him not appearing on Tidal’s live broadcast.

“The decision to not have Drake participate in the Tidal stream has nothing to do with Apple or Drake’s deal,” Drake’s manager Future the Prince told BuzzFeed. “I made a business decision. Apple doesn’t have the power to stop us from being part of a live stream. The only people that have the power to do that are Cash Money and Universal, and they’re our partners.”

Tidal then countered Future’s statement by claiming they have proof Apple was involved in the black-out. A representative for Tidal issued a response to Buzzfeed but chose not to provide evidence.

“We have all the email receipts and written correspondence that took place with said, blocked performance. That being said we choose to keep it classy,” stated a Tidal spokesperson.

The Lil Weezyana Fest situation may still be unclear at the moment, but Future the Prince’s statement did confirmed that Drake is still officially signed to Cash Money Records. There had been speculation whether the OVO leader’s latest project If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late was his final album for the label, therefore making him a free agent.

Will Apple Sue Tidal For $20 Million Over Drake Performance?

Drake performed at a charity event for his friend and kinda sorta boss Lil Wayne. It was for the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, an event that decimated Wayne’s native New Orleans.

Well, Drake’s deal with Apple Music prompted a blackout of the Canadians performance, which was being streamed live on Tidal.

Now, there are rumors that Apple may sue Tidal.

The New York Post reports:

Apple Music declared war on rival streaming service, Jay Z’s Tidal, over Drake’s appearance at a charity concert to benefit kids affected by Hurricane Katrina. Tidal faces being sued for $ 20 million if it streamed Apple artist Drake’s brief two-song appearance at the Friday night show.

Apple Music execs were not happy when Drake was confirmed to perform at Lil Wayne’s Lil WeezyAna Fest in New Orleans Friday night, even though the festival benefits Tha Carter Fund, which supports after-school programs in Louisiana.
Lawyers were called in because the event was being streamed live via Tidal — and Drake has an exclusive deal with Apple Music said to be worth up to $ 19 million. Sources say the tech giant threatened to sue for $ 20 million if Drake appeared, or if his music was streamed live, on Tidal.

A source told us, “Legal letters have been sent to Tidal warning that Drake cannot appear on the Tidal stream of the festival, either solo or part of a group, and if the warning was ignored, the liabilities could be up to $ 20 million.
“This event is for charity, Drake is doing two songs. Why does Apple think it can dictate to artists where and when they can perform?”

The Post reported Drake has a $ 19 million deal with Apple as one of the artists who helped them launch their new streaming service.

Drake’s Performance At ‘Lil Weezyana Fest’ Blocked From Streaming On Tidal Due To Apple Interference

(AllHipHop News) The streaming wars just got very messy. Tidal exclusively streamed Lil Wayne’s “Lil Weezyana Fest” in New Orleans last night (August 28), and Tunechi brought out several guests including Juvenile, Turk, Mannie Fresh, and Master P. But when Wayne was ready to bring his Young Money artist Drake to the stage, the live stream cut off.

[ALSO READ: Lil Wayne’s “Lil Weezyana Fest” To Stream Live On Tidal]

The screen just included the following message:

Tidal-Apple

Reports began circulating earlier in the evening that Apple threatened to sue Tidal for $ 20 million if the platform streamed Drake performing. The Toronto native sign a reported $ 19 million exclusive deal with Apple. This fight comes after Tidal financier Jay Z suggested Apple was running a smear campaign against his company back in April.

Lil Wayne is a part owner of Tidal along with other artists such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, J. Cole, Kanye West, Madonna, Alicia Keys, and Usher. Proceeds from Wayne’s “Lil Weezyana Fest” were to benefit kids affected by Hurricane Katrina.

“This event is for charity, Drake is doing two songs,” a source told Page Six. “Why does Apple think it can dictate to artists where and when they can perform?”

Kanye West Brings Rihanna Onstage For Surprise Performance At FYF Fest

Kanye West just pulled a Taylor Swift.

During his performance at FYF Fest on Saturday in Los Angeles, the rapper (who filled in for Frank Ocean) surprised the audience when he brought Rihanna onstage with him. The resident bad gal also seemed surprised, as she was just taking in the show from the crowd.

But like the pro she is, RiRi took the mic when West handed it to her during his performance of “FourFiveSeconds,” which she’s featured on. She then turned to the crowd and said, “LA, make some noise for my n***a Kanye!”

The rapper, who’s married to reality queen Kim Kardashian, also got the Barbadian performer up onstage to sing her part of “All of the Lights.” Naturally, the audience went nuts.

You can check out some video highlights below:

West was a last-minute addition to the roster, stepping in for Ocean, who dropped out last week, Gossip Cop reported.

”We’re really sorry that due to a scheduling conflict beyond our control, Frank Ocean is not going to be able to appear at FYF Festival as planned,” Ocean’s reps said in a statement obtained by Entertainment Weekly.

They added that he “had really been looking forward to the performance and to seeing all of his fans.” But West paid homage to his fellow hip-hop artist by opening his set with the track “No Church in the Wild,” which features Ocean’s vocals.

Kanye West to the rescue — all day, all day.

Story of Kansas Trans Man Told in “Dance Moms” Performance

2015-07-16-1437086932-5855971-jaypryor.jpg

Jay Pryor was born a girl named “Janet” in a rural Kansas community. Today he is a trans man with a wife and kids who still resides in Kansas. The intervening years were often painful and confusing; they almost became tragic.

Jay shared his story of transition as part of the music/theater project I direct entitled it gets better. It tours across the country and includes a week of outreach to schools and community organizations. Recently we were contacted by the television show Dance Moms because a producer saw our show and was especially interested in Jay’s story. Jay agreed to participate and flew to Los Angeles to record the episode alongside our cast.

The resulting dance piece features a song (also from the stage show) entitled “Run, Run, Run” by the Danish artists Kier and Sascha DuPont. The song is intended to capture the push and pull of forces that Jay experiences as a young trans person, first running away from something and then realizing he was running toward something else.

The episode airs on 7/21 but the producers also put together this special video to offer greater detail about Jay’s story behind the dance. It also captures the gentle curiosity and openness of the young dancers as they meet a trans individual for the first time.

The live production of it gets better will next be staged at the University of Northern Iowa’s Gallagher Bluedorn Center on September 12. Jay Pryor is planning to attend the engagement as a special guest. The show is a co-production of GMCLA, Speak Theater Arts and the It Gets Better Project.

Fondazione Prada to Host Performance Art Project

Fondazione Prada will hold its first performance art project this fall.

Called “Atlas of Gesture,” the performance will be held at the art institution’s Milanese headquarters from Sept. 18 to Oct. 3.

Conceived by dancer and choreographer Virgilio Sieni, who is also the director of Venice Biennale’s dance section, the project will involve both professional and amateur dancers who will perform on the two levels of the site’s Podium area. The dancers will interact with the statues of the “Serial Classic” exhibition, which currently occupies the space, in order to create a contrast between the dynamic dancing bodies and the static nature of the sculptures.

“Atlas of Gesture” will include five different parts, called Origin, Ritual, Announcement, Gravity and Nudity.

Tory Burch Takes Paris With Cocktails and a Special Live Performance!

Tory Burch and Jessica Alba

Earlier tonight in Paris, the woman who redefined modern American style, Tory Burch, hosted a cocktail party to celebrate her first flagship boutique in Paris. Located on the Rue Saint-Honoré, the boutique presents Burch’s signature preppy flair with a fashionable edge. Taking in the chic setting were Jessica Alba, Mélanie Laurent, and Dianna Agron along with fashionable girls about town, including Sofía Sanchez de Betak, Sabine Getty, and Gaia Repossi. However, it wasn’t all cocktails and canapes. After an intimate dinner at La Réserve hosted by Anna Wintour, the party continued at the garden of the Sully Hôtel in the Marais. The best part? The performance from Lauryn Hill, turning the City of Light into the city that danced all night.

Bob Costas Doesn’t Have Time For Your Bulls–t Pitching Performance

Bob Costas has called some games, you know? You could even say he’s called some of the great games in the history of U.S. sports. So when you step up to the mound and you know Bob Costas is on the mic, you better bring it. You better bring it every goddamned time. And if you don’t, well, he sure as hell will bring it for you.

Such was life for Chicago Cubs pitcher Pedro Strop on Friday after he gave up a home run, hit a batter, walked a batter and then got pulled out of the game only to point to the sky, much to Costas’ apparent disapproval.

Chicago Cubs pitcher Pedro Strop apparently did not not play to Bob Costas’ liking.

Bob Costas doesn’t have time for this bullshit. Seriously, does this look like the face of a man who messes around? No, it does not.

Kanye West Pissed Billboard Censored His Performance To Oblivion

It doesn’t take much to throw Kanye West off his mood game but he arguably has a case after the noise-cancelling job the Billboard Music Awards producers did during his performance of “All Day” and “Black Skinhead.”

As we reported earlier, the original live televised version missed a few n-word bombs but by the time it aired for us on the West Coast, the producers just threw in the towel and pushed the mute button.

Now, hell is waiting around the corner for payback.

Reports TMZ:

Kanye West is pissed off at the Billboard Awards for heavily censoring his performance of “All Day” and “Black Skinhead” because he says they cut his audio even when he wasn’t dropping profanities.

Kanye’s mostly-silenced closing act was the talk of the award show — but sources close to the rapper tell us producers knew when he was going to curse because he gave them the lyrics exactly as he performed them … and yet they yanked his audio for up to 15 seconds at a time.

Our sources point out that during “Black Skinhead” a lot of clean lyrics were censored. For instance, the lines — “My leather black jeans on” … and “Middle America” were dropped. In other cases, it appears the censor had an itchy trigger finger, and pulled the audio several seconds early.

As we reported … Kanye did not attend final rehearsal — but we’re told that’s because doctors had him on vocal rest. He even needed a cortisone shot over the weekend. Still, he did 2 rehearsals in L.A. earlier in the week for Billboard.

As for the fact you couldn’t see Kanye — we’re told he gave producers a specific note about changing lighting and camera angles. We’re told Yeezy’s a perfectionist when it comes to his final product, and feels like they screwed him.

His people also released an infuriated statement:

Kanye West was grossly over-censored at the Billboard Music Awards. Non-profane lyrics such as “with my leather black jeans on” were muted for over 30 second intervals. As a result, his voice and performance were seriously misrepresented.

It is ridiculous that in 2015, unwarranted censorship is something that artists still have to fight against.

Although West was clearly set up to face elements beyond his control during the live broadcast, he would like to apologize to the television audience who were unable to enjoy the performance the way he envisioned.

If you missed it or need a refresher, the latest Kanye West Billboard Music Awards performance can be seen below.

Performance Artist Mad At Jay Z Over “Picasso Baby” Deal

Marina Abramović, the famed performance artist, is angry at Jay Z, alleging that the Hip-Hop mogul used her for his rap video “Picasso Baby.”

The the Serbian artist said that her appearance was contingent on Jay Z donating to her institute when the song premiered two years ago.

The artist told Spike magazine that she was “pissed” at Jay Z for not giving as he allegedly promised. Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film was partially inspired by Abramović’s 2010 performance The Artist is Present. In the “Picasso Baby” video, Jay Z rapped the song for six hours, whereas Abramović didn’t move for 736 hours at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

“He adapted my work under one condition: That he would help my institute, which he didn’t,” the 68-year-old artist said. “In the end it was only a one-way transaction. I will never do it again.”
She maintains she was “completely used” by Jay Z.

Neither Roc Nation of Jay Z has commented on Abramović’s allegations.

Politics as Performance: From Obama’s Luther to Huckabee’s Christ

Listen to this companion podcast on SiriusXM POTUS 124.

As the White House Correspondents’ Dinner reliably demonstrates, performance is the new politics. By tapping comedy, drama and other forms of storytelling influencers can access strategies they’d normally never employ.

Consider the recent dinnertime plays that Barack Obama’s ran, all to set the record straight on his presidency, set traps for any GOP successor, and put journalists in their places.  Whether delivered directly or through Luther, Obama’s brilliant comedian-proxy, Keegan-Michael Key, the president did more agenda-setting in one evening than a dozen serious-minded sit-downs.  Here are some examples:

“Six years into my presidency some people still say I’m arrogant, aloof, condescending. Some people are so dumb.”  His play was a counter-intuitive Lantern, the strategy that volunteers a player’s shortcomings and one he’s loath to run in more serious settings.

“Soon, the first presidential contest will take place, and I for one cannot wait to see who the Koch brothers pick. It’s exciting.” His line was delivered as a kidding Ping, but it had all the power of a caustic Call Out on the Kochs’ use of new election laws.

Obama: “We count on the press to shed light on the most important issues of the day.”  Luther: “And we can count on FOX to terrify old white people with some nonsense!”  This was another masked Call Out, made possible by the venue and the expectation for barbs.  But more than the play, its genius was in the proxy who fired shots for Obama.

This is to say that in the Plays for the Presidency 2016, those who seek the oval office will be naturally advantaged if their politics are rooted in performance.  Of this week’s newly-announced candidates, one got it, two didn’t.

When the former Republican Carly Florina sniped in her dour video announcement, “Our founders never envisioned a professional political class,” we were informed of the former tech CEO’s opinion on the Clintons but cooled to Carly personally.

Contrast this to the former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who declared from his Hope, Ark., perch, “I grew up blue-collar, not blue-blood.” We are informed on the pastor-politician’s opinion of Bill and Hillary, but the tone is self-effacing, and it dovetails with the Huckabee slogan, I like Mike.

Fiorina’s might as well be, I hate Hillary.

Here’s more from Huckabee this week, each quote having the impact of a Call Out on progressives but presenting as a more noble Challenge to conservatives.  Note, too, his shrewd use of the framing play we call a Screen, all to invoke the all-American staples of Western genre movies and a Christian God:

“I wonder if [Obama] could watch a Western from the 50s and be able to figure out who the good guys and the bad guys really are. As president…we will deal with jihadis just as we would deal with deadly snakes.”

“As Americans, we ought to get onto our knees every night and thank God we still live in a country that people are trying to break into rather than one they’re trying to break out of.”

The other declared candidate, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, was no better than Fiorina.  Like Clinton, Cruz, Paul, Rubio, Sanders, Walker, Webb and others, Carson’s announcement was an oddly wonky monologue, enabled by framing strategies to invoke the likes of Lincoln and MLK and neatly side-step obvious questions of the good doctor’s qualifications.

Campaigning is serious business. So is the strategy that directs it.  But what was once straight-faced talking points on civics and citizenship is quickly morphing into soaring sermons where dramatics, and particularly comedy, are thriving and where the better actors are sure to hold our attention.

What Happens in Marfa Stays in Marfa: D.S. & Durga’s Sonic Perfume Performance

Marfa perfume

Before David Moltz made it big in the business of base notes with D.S. & Durga, the Brooklyn-based perfume house that he runs with his wife and design-partner, the self-taught nose was something of a serial band-organizer. His first fledgling musical act was formed in the fourth grade. “That one was a two-piece called Satan’s Little Helpers. I banged on a plastic yellow box and sang and my friend played the guitar. Our first album was going to be called, The Rings of Saturn are Plaid!

Following an early-aughts run in Boston with his college band, Moonraker, and another round of touring eight years ago with Brooklyn’s pastoral, heavy-on-the-Americana outfit Salt & Samovar, Moltz traded in his electric guitars for small batches of essential oils and essences. But transitioning from one pursuit to the other came with its advantages. “I was able to start taking my creative ideas and have them come out through perfume.”

D.S. & Durga El Cosmico perfume

Expand

Photo: Courtesy of El Cosmico Provisions Co.

That progression was on full display last night at Liz Lambert’s buzz-y El Cosmico hotel in Marfa, Texas, where Moltz and his new band, Copal Opal, were busy setting up his ambitious new scent machine in the middle of the property’s tee-pee. “It’s a centrifugal fan that people sit around,” Moltz explained of the circular apparatus designed by the artist Bruce Johanns. “I have sixteen foot pedals that spray an accord into the fan as I play, and it blows back out to the people.” As intimate groups of 25 filled the canvas structure to take in two different sets of the foursome’s “West African, pseudo-Celtic-Viking, American Delta” stylings, they found themselves at the center of a live music and perfume performance via pulses of notes like radiant ylang ylang, dark amber, and smoke, which permeated the desert air and intermingled with the sonic tones.

The scent installation was organized to celebrate the launch of a new D.S. & Durga fragrance, created for the boutique desert property (and now available for pre-order), that boasts hints of sumac, creosote, pinyon pine, oak, mesquite, sand, and woods. “I’m parlaying the success of the perfume into the music,” explains Moltz, who adds that this is the first show for his imaginative scent system—but definitely not the last. “The band will play without it,” he insists, but should a contained, downtown gallery space materialize, he certainly wouldn’t turn it down.

Root Canal or Annual Performance Review?

I hate the annual performance review. I hate it. I hate it the way I hate cleaning toilets and running in to work people outside of work.

Oh, yeah…hi! Soooo….out shopping? Awesome…wow, that is a LOT of lube, isn’t it? I didn’t know they sold Gummy bears in 50 lb. bags. OK then, I’ll see you on Monday.

I dread getting my annual judgement handed down to me. I am instantly transported back to the age where naps were part of school and when my favorite activity was building walls with big cardboard blocks and knocking them down with my boyfriend, Clarence.

I actually had two boyfriends in kindergarten, Clarence and Greg. I didn’t see the point in wasting time when it came to driving my mother out of her head.

Anyway, I hate the work performance review. First of all, if I am doing something wrong, then tell me that I’m doing something wrong. Don’t hoard them throughout the year and dump them on me all at once.

That has only happened a few times, mostly my reviews are awesome. One boss did ask if I could make an effort to not call him an asshole quite so often. My response was to tell him that was entirely up to him. If he didn’t act like an asshole, then I wouldn’t call him an asshole.

I also loathe the self evaluation forms. One place I worked had a form where they listed a crap ton of either/or scenarios and you and to pick between them. But the either/or scenarios were ridiculous. I don’t remember what they specifically said, by they were kind of like this:

Would you say in the past year you have:

A) Saved the company thousands of dollars telepathically

or

B) Left goat entrails on your neighbors’ doorstep

The other thing I hate about performance reviews is that they are presented by the boss. I have had some good bosses. The boss I have now seems nice and reasonable. He is approachable and pleasant. I can’t complain. I’ve had some bad bosses as well. A few I would say were insane. And that is what we all want, isn’t it? To be evaluated by some fucked up grand poobah on a power trip.

My last boss called me by the wrong name for the first 4 years and loved to bring criticism to performance reviews. He didn’t even know my name, but felt confident he could evaluate my work.

I once had a boss that smelled like boiled cabbage and licked the sores on his arms. He told me in a review that I needed to improve my appearance. He didn’t like the red streaks I had in my hair at the time. He licked his own sores yet felt qualified to judge my hair color choices.

I did have a boss that I got along with. We had a similar sense of humor and worked together well. That didn’t mean that I looked forward to the annual performance review, but did find the experience not quite as painful.

We had to write our own evaluation and turn it in before the actual review. I found one that I wrote for myself and turned in to my boss. This was from 2005.

I find it astounding that I’m expected to evaluate myself. The ways in which I am amazing are apparent and it seems a waste of my time and talent to have to write them down.

Speaking of talent, that is how I want to be referred to from now on. ‘The talent’. Also, and this is something I should have addressed a long time ago, I would like for you to speak to all the other employees and tell them that they are no longer to address me directly. In fact, I would prefer that they avert their eyes when I am in the same room.

As far as my actual talent and contributions go, it would take too long to list all of them and it really grates against my over-developed sense of humility to speak highly of myself. I will just hit the highlights:

Any gains for the company over the last year are entirely due to me. If not my actual effort, then the inspiration that oozes from me like glittery sweat infects those around me and makes them super employees.

My very breath is a cleaning agent. When I exhale, I make the world a better place.

I will agree to continue my employment here, but I do require the following:

I am sure we can both agree that there is no real way to quantify my contribution here. The joy that my presence brings to everyone here cannot be valued. Fortunately, my life is all about helping my fellow humans and I don’t require much. In addition to increasing my paycheck as much as you fucking can, I would also like a helicopter pad built outside my office. I realize this will cut the parking lot down and not everyone will be able to park in front of the building anymore. This shouldn’t pose a problem though, as there is street parking just a few blocks down. I would also like a chocolate milkshake every Thursday afternoon.

Oddly enough, he made me write a second evaluation.

True genius is always under-appreciated.

Jonathan Groff Honors International Day Of Happiness With A Stunning Live Performance

Looking” hunk Jonathan Groff took to the stage of FOX 5’s Good Day New York to honor the U.N.-sanctioned International Day of Happiness with a stunning performance.

Groff, who is currently starring in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” at New York’s Public Theater, crooned a tender version of the famous Judy Garland/Barbra Streisand medley, “Get Happy/Happy Days are Here Again,” to mark the occasion.

The 29-year-old “Glee” and “Spring Awakening” veteran said he was excited to participate on behalf of his musical director and friend, Mary-Mitchell Campbell, who moderated a U.N. panel yesterday on how happiness can impact global issues. In addition to her work on Broadway musicals like “Finding Neverland,” Mitchell is the founder and executive director of Artists Striving to End Poverty, or ASTEP, which aims to “connect performing and visual artists with underserved youth in the U.S.”

“Hearing that you bring happiness to people from performing means everything,” Groff told The Huffington Post in a statement. He also wanted to get the word out about how everyone can make a difference via the Happy Acts campaign, a Live Happy magazine initiative.

And what makes Groff the happiest these days? “Spending time with my 2-week-old niece.”

Mitchell said she wanted to be involved in the panel because she’s found that “happiness is a choice.”

“People who are happy also have a sense of contentment, and that allows for them to see and connect with others because they aren’t as focused on just themselves and their problems,” she said. “That connection point is needed for us to start to deal with the bigger issues the world faces.”

Groff can be seen in the series finale of “Glee,” which airs March 20. The second season finale of “Looking” will air March 22.

Kanye’s Big Performance and More Things We Loved at Paris Fashion Week

Photo: Courtesy of Deborah Enkaoua / @deborahenkaoua

Kanye West would be the first to say that fashion and music are easy bedfellows, and tonight he underscored that assumption with his concert at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the first in a series of performances to run between now and the end of Paris Fashion Week. But let’s back up a bit for a second, and recap the runway happenings that hit a high note on the schedule today. First up, Junya Watanabe’s new collection, which showed this morning, was a gorgeous study in stylish geometry, and then there was designer Guillaume Henry’s highly anticipated debut for Nina Ricci at the end of the day. See all the moments that topped our agenda in the roundup below.

1. Kanye takes center stage: The Fondation Louis Vuitton has played host to art exhibitions and fashion shows alike, but today it was Kanye West who rocked the building with the first in a series of charity concerts happening now through the end of Paris Fashion Week.

2. Tagging is chic: Besides all the eye-catching clothes we saw at Junya Watanabe’s show this morning, one thing that turned heads was the curlicue graffiti inked on the models’ arms and legs.

3. Shine bright like a diamond: Our new favorite party dress showed up at the runway at Nina Ricci today—and it was truly hard to miss. In fact, even just beginning to imagine how many sequins made up the sparkling red holographic look is more than our little fashion-obsessed minds can muster.

4. Gladiator gone brogue: Robert Clergerie has always been a safe haven for women who love a flat shoe, and today its gladiator sandal brogue hybrid was yet another reason for us to stay on a stylish even keel.

5. Up, up, and away: With a room jammed with party balloons and a new collaboration with Colette-approved artist Darcel for fall, the Ç x Façonnable presentation was cause for showgoers to be cheerful.

A Breakout Performance Grounds A Challenging, Funny ‘Togetherness’

It’s odd to think that a whole new genre of television has blossomed in the last few years — an exciting new category that didn’t exist several years ago.

“Togetherness,” a fine new HBO offering from Jay and Mark Duplass and Steve Zissis, sits very squarely at the center of this new subgenre, which unites the artistic strengths and intimate scale of independent cinema with the narrative rewards of character-driven television.

“Togetherness” can be hard to watch at times, given that it looks unflinchingly at the difficulties of marriage and friendship as middle age approaches, but the show is absolutely worth sticking with, if only for the virtuoso performance from Zissis, whose failed-actor character is one of the finest new creations to arrive on television in some time.

With HBO rolling out a whole evening of shows exhibiting this loose-yet-disciplined indie aesthetic — “Girls” and “Looking” also return in typically worthwhile form Sunday — it feels like the trend that began a few years ago with “Louie” and Lena Dunham’s thinkpiece generator has blossomed into a full-fledged flood. What a welcome outpouring.

Yes, you could subtitle HBO’s Sunday programming block “Say Hello to Narcissists in Coastal Cities,” but the half-hour running times often makes the characters’ self-absorption easier to take. In any event, interrogating that selfishness is sometimes the point of these shows, and there is such compassion, wit and intelligent nuance woven through these programs that I’ve never felt the urge to give up on them. That’s partly because the characters on these shows are hard to forget, and the programs themselves — by turns low-key, snarky and profound — can serve as a nice break from television’s more overwrought, bombastic and stylized fare.

“Louie” and “Girls” might be the most high-profile exemplars of the trend toward half-hour shows that explore the lives of neurotic, talkative, educated men and women, but a bunch of variations on those models have arrived in the last year or two. These programs are not really comedies (unless that’s a useful designation for awards-seeking purposes). True, they often have amusing moments, but these shows are most often driven by complex emotional situations and personal dilemmas. Not a lot happens, at least in a plot or story sense; it’s all about the knotty personal journeys the characters go on, and over time, the best shows quietly build up a good deal of emotional weight.

Linda Holmes recently wrote about how the one-hour family drama has largely gone away, at least on the bigger networks, but I think, to some degree, that kind of emotionally driven storytelling has migrated to the fringes, to places like ABC Family (“The Fosters,” “Switched at Birth”), to soaps (“Jane the Virgin“) and often to these indie-flavored TV shows. As many cable and broadcast networks increasingly seek out high-concept shows and adaptations of well-known properties, programs about intimacy, families (blood-related and self-created), emotional crises and tangled relationships have had to find new homes, and I hope streaming services and risk-taking cable outfits continue to take chances on them.

Even within this smallish subgenre, there’s a great deal of welcome variation: The late, lamented “Enlightened” was more visually poetic and disciplined than the shaggier entries in this category; the late, lamented “Men of a Certain Age” was an hourlong program and had a slightly more comedic approach to its characters’ bittersweet middle-aged crises; “You’re the Worst” is more sprightly than some other entries in this group but it’s every bit as intelligent and dryly comic as its peers; “Looking” is more openly romantic and features characters who are not straight and not always white (hooray); and “Transparent,” which delves into sexuality, identity and family politics with jaw-dropping craftiness, shares a vibe and a Duplass with “Togetherness,” but it generally has a different set of narrative concerns. (Jay and Mark Duplass directed most episodes and created “Togetherness” with Zissis, and Mark Duplass plays one of the leads; Jay Duplass plays one of the leads in “Transparent.”)

It’s easy to picture a “Togetherness”/”Transparent” crossover; they’re both about groups of families and friends who live in Los Angeles and who are restless about where they are in their lives. Like “Transparent,” “Togetherness” is quietly observational and allows small moments to breathe, and both can be wickedly funny. Both shows (along with “You’re the Worst”) feature indictments of entertainment-industry douchebags, and I’m superficial enough to love it when they engage in that kind of needling satire.

There are two story threads in “Togetherness”: One follows Brett and his wife, Michelle, who have two young children and have hit a rough patch in their marriage. Brett can be hard to take; another character calls him a “grumpy, anal vegan” and that’s pretty accurate. He can be cold and has a tendency to talk over and steamroll his shy, tentative wife, Michelle (Melanie Lynskey), and it can be hard to watch her struggle to express her needs and assert herself. Lynskey’s heart-rending, vanity-free performance makes it clear how much Michelle has had to shut herself down to keep the peace and to keep the family functioning, and I often wondered if Brett deserved her. “Togetherness” is only eight episodes long, and at times, I wished either the season had been longer or a little more time had been spent on establishing what Michelle and Brett liked and loved about each other before their marriage began to fly apart.

Then again, even if the show had done that, it can simply be difficult to watch another couple go through a warts-and-all marriage crisis, but I respect “Togetherness” for committing to a realistic and complicated portrayal of the couple’s problems. Those issues are, ironically, the kinds of problems you could easily find on a conventional sitcom: A busy family life means that a couple has grown apart and the wife’s sexual desire for her husband has waned, etc.

In any event, the weightiness of Michelle and Brett’s problems make it even more important that their story is deftly balanced by the stumbling adventures of the two other lead characters, Tina (Amanda Peet) and Alex (Zissis). The evolution of their unlikely friendship is goofier and warmer than the prickly domestic drama that occupies the other half of the show, and Peet and Zissis do a spectacular job of peeling back the surfaces of Tina and Alex to reveal the insecurity and fear lurking behind their casual facades. One of the most worthwhile things a television show can do is chronicle the history and impact of an emotional connection, and “Togetherness” is in top form in many of the later Alex-Tina scenes.

What is there to say about “Girls” that has not already been said by the Thinkpiece Industrial Complex? It remains invigoratingly itself and it continues to land in Hannah in a series of situations in which layers of thematic complexity stack up like delayed planes circling a busy airport. Hannah remains Hannah; she is blissfully unaware of how unaware she is of how she comes off, but Lena Dunham is very aware of her show’s place in the cultural conversation, and one of the most interesting features of the new season is the meta-commentary that is sprinkled through many scenes. I’d rather have Alex from “Togetherness” than Hannah from “Girls” crashing on my couch, but I enjoy watching both of them stumble through life like bulls wandering through well-stocked china shops.

I haven’t said much about “Looking” yet, though it may be my favorite of the three Sunday shows. “Looking” is so self-effacing and low-key that it tends to get lost in the television conversation, and that’s a mistake. Jonathan Groff’s Patrick is just as self-absorbed as any of the characters previously mentioned, but he’s also so endearingly naive and so charmingly open to new experiences that his adventures are impossible to resist. The entire ensemble has a wonderful ease together, and any show that makes sure Scott Bakula gets a decent amount of screen time is, by definition, doing something right.

It’s worth noting that “Looking” is one of the sweetest and most romantic shows on television, and one the best at depicting the complexity and curiosity that drives many sexual encounters. And though it makes me cringe a little to say this (Catholic schooling, etc.), I have to add that it’s becoming increasingly comical that HBO shows — any pay-cable shows, really — never show male genitalia during sex scenes.

I know, I know. In our culture, anything that shows male junk is coded as pornography, and HBO is way too fancy to let itself get branded with that kind of downmarket implication. But there’s a whole generation of filmmakers and storytellers on that network and elsewhere who are being forced to jump through a series of increasingly ridiculous hoops in order to not show a penis (and no, the fact that “Game of Thrones” showed Hodor’s … hodor a while back does not really count in this context).

These days, there are smart, mature and thoughtful treatments of sexuality to be found in “Looking,” “Transparent,” “Masters of Sex,” “Outlander,” “Girls,” among other shows; these are programs in which explorations of sexuality are important elements of character development. Yes, TV will always have some shows that whip out body parts for prurient or crass reasons, but we’re lucky to now have a whole array of programs in several different genres in which all kinds of desires, sexual and otherwise, are examined with thoroughness, compassion and intelligence. And yet, on many of these worthy programs, the elements of sexuality that directors and creators are forced to leave out of makes for some odd omissions, weird workarounds and strange camera angles.

No, it’s not the end of the world — a lack of penis on TV isn’t among the most important issues of our time. But yes, this skewed state of affairs does cause a person to sigh deeply — the idea that any number of random boobs and violent rapes on TV are okay, but oh my! What if a TV show made by and for grownups depicted a man’s equipment — why, the world might end!

Look, I understand the hesitation of networks, actors and viewers who would be weirded out by the idea of penis on TV. I hesitated to even bring this up, truthfully, lest anyone think that’s what I’m primarily looking for in a TV show (um, no). But it’s the fearlessness of a recent wave of good TV shows, including the three HBO shows mentioned here, that prompts these questions. There are a number of creators who seem willing to go anywhere with their characters, and the limits on their visions — wherever those limitations come from — are just increasingly obvious.

Sometimes I just wonder when TV will lose its last inhibition and let guys be not just emotionally naked but physically bare as well. Maybe never?

“Girls” airs Sunday at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO; “Togetherness” airs Sunday at 9:30 p.m. ET on HBO; “Looking” airs Sunday at 10:00 p.m. on HBO.

Ryan McGee and I talked about “Banshee,” “Archer,” “Looking,” “Togetherness” and “Girls” in the latest Talking TV podcast, which is here, on iTunes and below.

Bill Cosby Reportedly Jokes About Sexual Assault Allegations During Stand-Up Performance

Bill Cosby, who has been accused of sexual assault by more than two dozen women, told a woman attending his comedy show in Canada on Thursday night that “you have to be careful about drinking around me,” according to multiple people in the room.

The woman was reportedly getting up from her front-row seat at Budweiser Gardens in London, Ontario, to get a drink when Cosby asked where she was going. She offered him a drink, according to National Post reporter Richard Warnica and others in attendance.

That’s when Cosby made the crack:

One of his accusers, Beverly Johnson, has claimed that Cosby placed a drug in her drink before allegedly assaulting her.

Depending on who did the tweeting, the reaction varied from groans to laughs to both gasps and applause.

The 77-year-old comic was occasionally interrupted by hecklers and protesters:

Few images have emerged as the arena was enforcing rules against recording the show. One reporter said he was ejected after trying to record video of a protester being led out by police.

Before the show, protesters braved freezing temperatures and snow outside the arena:

Afterward, Cosby released a statement through his publicist:

“Dear Fans: One outburst but over 2600 loyal, patient and courageous fans enjoyed the most wonderful medicine that exist for human-kind. Laughter. I thank you, the theatre staff (Budweiser Gardens), the event organizers and the London, ON Community for your continued honor and support. I’m Far From Finished.”

Cosby has not directly responded to any of the accusations.

The performance was the second of three concerts in Ontario, with the final event scheduled to be held Friday night in Hamilton. His next scheduled event after that is Jan. 17 in Denver.

Atlanta’s Mo’Dest Volgare Serves the Most Offensive Holiday Drag Performance (NSFW VIDEO)

If you’re not offending somebody, you can’t call it “drag.” Cross dressing in any form flies in the face of so many societal expectations around gender, sexuality, and the symbols we use to express them. Drag queens take the offense of cross dressing and amplify it to an art form; the best queens try to shock as many people as possible through their performances. Every queen has a scat number, an off-color celebrity impersonation, and a lewd striptease. The cheery mainstream drag represented by RuPaul does not represent the true grassroots drag seen in clubs. Drag is punk rock done up in a wig and heels. It flips off the status quo with elegance and grace.

At the season finale of Dragnificent, Atlanta’s premier drag competition, I saw the most offensive number I believe exists. Celeste Holmes, host of Dragnificent, introduced the performer by telling the audience, “You are not prepared for this.” Celeste has been performing drag for three decades, and she said Mo’Dest Volgare‘s number was the wildest, most offensive piece of drag she had ever seen. I was dubious. I’d seen drag queens do Anne Frank, Helen Keller, and shit-stained fisting numbers. To shock me would take a ballsy performance.

Celeste was right. I was not prepared for Mo’Dest’s number.

The curtain opened up with Mo’Dest as the Virgin Mary kneeling before the angel Gabriel (played by Lola Bundy). Gabriel announces Mary’s impending pregnancy. Mary proclaims her desire to be God’s servant. Mo’Dest begins her lip sync: “Baby Daddy” by jazz vocalist Lil Armstrong. God walks in with a foot-long dong protruding from his robe. The Virgin Mary drops to her knees and begins to serve her gracious savior with professional deepthroat head. She rises to face the audience and reveals an extremely realistic pussy underneath her gown. Mary does not look like a virginal girl down there at all.

As Lil Armstrong wails on about the joys of “Baby Daddy” and “Big Daddy” making everything all right, Mary lies back while God pounds her with his big, heavenly dick. Mo’Dest shows us everything we wanted to know about the Immaculate Conception; she makes Mary’s innocent story a lurid and titillating tale of celestial intercourse.

The second half of Bible Tales by Mo’Dest Volgare gives us a more objective account of the birth of our lord and savior Jesus Christ.

A very pregnant Mary gallops on stage riding a wooden horse; her pubic hair waves in the breeze. “Baby Daddy” by M$ ney comes on, and Mo’Dest starts her lip sync: “I don’t need a job. I need a baby daddy to pay for my Louis and Gucci bag habit. … Imma have this baby. This if fucking payday!” The song and Mo’Dest’s urban-stripper attitude cast the holy mother in an entirely new light.

Once Mary makes it to the stable, she lies back on a bale of hay as Joseph serves as midwife. He reaches deep into Mary and pulls out a large, naked (living) baby Jesus, covered in amniotic fluid, with an umbilical cord hanging out of him. Mo’Dest takes the umbilical cord as a leash and finishes her lip sync; her creamy thighs are covered in blood, and her vulva still hangs out for everyone to see.

This number captures what I love about drag and the spirit of Mo’Dest Volgare so well. When I see this performance, I see a young gay man taking the frustrations and hardships of his life and turning them into a spectacle of depraved humor. Mo’Dest came from a very conservative, Christian, suburban, middle-class, white family. When he came out to them, he was disowned for his sinful ways. As a young man today, Mo’Dest lives the life of urban Atlanta poverty; food stamps, taking public transit, living in dangerous areas, and struggling to survive have been part of his life for years. Mo’Dest’s appropriation of the music, dance, symbols, and attitude of hip-hop is an expression of class solidarity, even if some perceive it as racially insensitive. The joy Mo’Dest has performing this number is palpable; it’s as if this unholy extravaganza removes years of negativity from her soul.

Mo’Dest’s interpretation of the Virgin Birth shows audiences exactly who Mo’Dest is: a strong performer willing to take on the fables of religion, even if it means pissing off the audience. Mo’Dest has consistently used the styles of urban black culture in her outfits, wigs, music, and attitude; this is both daring and truthful to the life she lives. She is a highly political, controversial queen channeling her struggles into conceptual drag, and that is why I love her. In the religious, racially divided South, a ‘hood-style Mary getting knocked up by God, bleeding on stage, and singing about Jesus as a payday might possibly offend everyone in the audience; this is what Mo’Dest lives for.

I would argue that the more people you offend with your drag, the more successful you are as a performer. Unfortunately, this was not the view of the judges of this cycle of Dragnificent. Mo’Dest received third place behind Chyna White and winner Jazelle. But when it comes to exemplifying the depraved catharsis possible through drag, Mo’Dest is always the winner.
