Bill Cosby’s last lesson: Separating the public person from the private one

Bill Cosby, the man once fondly known as “America’s dad,” is going to prison. And while it’s a lesson we have learned time and again in the past, it’s hard to think of a more profound juxtaposition in terms of the need to separate the public image from the private man.

TIME Calls Bullsh*t On Trump’s Claim He Was Up For Person of the Year

Donald Trump, a known liar and alleged pedophile endorser, took to Twitter to claim curved TIME magazine because they were only “considering” him for Person of the Year, again. After getting clowned for his usual foolishness, TIME called bullsh*t on his claims.

“Time Magazine called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named “Man (Person) of the Year,” like last year, but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!,” tweeted Trump.

Let’s take into account that Cheeto is a narcissist who in the past went to the trouble of making fake TIME covers featuring himself.

Shortly after Cheeto’s tweet, TIME stepped up and confirmed the obvious.

“The President is incorrect about how we choose Person of the Year. TIME does not comment on our choice until publication, which is December 6,” tweeted TIME’s official Twitter account.

So the known pathological liar, lied again.

Y’all President can’t be trusted, about anything.

Yo Gotti Named Person Of Interest In Young Dolph Shooting

Yo Gotti has been named a person of interest in today’s shooting of Memphis rapper Young Dolph in Hollywood. The cops must have been perusing Twitter.

Actually, according to TMZ, witnesses at the seen are who say Yo Gotti was involved.

Reportedly, both Yo Gotti and Young Dolph were staying at the same hotel, the Loews Hotel in Hollywood. Needless to say, that was a horrible twist of fate.

While both Gotti and Dolph represent Memphis, the two rappers have well-known beef. Allegedly their respective entourages crossed paths, an altercation occurred and shortly thereafter shots were fired.

It’s always the weed carriers that end up f*cking sh*t up for the breadwinner rapper isn’t it?

Who is the Better Business Person – Trump or Fiorina?

The common wisdom goes like this:

1. Fiorina ruined HP and Lucent totally by herself yet made a fortune in CEO pay. Therefore, Fiorina is bad at business. She only makes money for herself, not the stockholders. Also, she eats employees and poops them out.

2. On the other hand, Donald Trump is a successful entrepreneur across several lines of business. Therefore, he is the better business person.

But then you say…

3. “But what about Trump’s four bankruptcies? His partners lost money!”

Then someone with more than ten minutes of business experience says…

4. Trump had a diversified portfolio of holdings. Some were guaranteed to be better than others. So he did the smart thing and created separate entities that could fail individually, just like any stock investor with a diversified portfolio. Plus, banks and investors require that sort of separation as a requirement for funding. There really wasn’t a second way to do it.

But then you say…

5. “I saw a calculation that said Trump would be richer now if all he did was invest the tens-of-millions he got in inheritance in stocks. So he must be bad at business.”

Then I say…

6. Trump’s successful run for the presidency (if he succeeds) will make the Trump brand ten-times more valuable by the time he leaves office. The presidency is an investment for Trump in ways it would not be for anyone else. Becoming President, should it happen, makes the Trump brand valuable in perpetuity whereas otherwise it might have withered after his passing.

After you hear that last point, perhaps you think Trump is a far better business person than Fiorina. All she did was ruin HP and Lucent. At least Trump built some businesses and created jobs, even if several of his ventures could have worked out better.

Now I will convince you that Fiorina is Trump’s equal in business, as far as we can tell.

For starters, both Trump and Fiorina are capitalists operating within the rules of the system. The point of capitalism is to maximize your own gain, not the gain of your customers or your stockholders. We like to happy-talk about how everyone is in it as a team, but capitalism only works if we all know that to be a lie. The system works best when people pursue an enlightened selfishness that understands how things work. Here I am not judging capitalism; I am simply describing it.

So, by the standards of business, and the rules of capitalism, Fiorina elbowed her way to the top of two enormous companies and walked away richer each time. That is an A+ performance under the rules of capitalism.

Was Fiorina’s management bad for shareholders and employees? Maybe. But since we don’t know how another CEO would have performed in each of her situations we are left to imagine it. And then we confuse our biases with reason.

There’s a reason that science demands a control case. Without the control, test results have no meaning. Yet we think we can judge Fiorina’s job performance without a control. If there is no control, it ain’t science. And if it ain’t science, it is just guessing.

I know I haven’t changed your mind about Fiorina’s business skills yet. But I’m not done either. I was saving my best point for last.

I call this move The High Ground Maneuver, and by now my regular readers are alert to this method of persuasion. Watch how powerful it is even though I pointed out my method in advance.

— The High Ground Maneuver —

I say…

Every seasoned business person knows that failure teaches you more than success. Trump has had plenty of failures. He knows what they look like, he knows how to manage risk, and he knows how to recover.

Likewise, Fiorina has been in the corporate cage-fights for years. One assumes she picked up some skills because – in case you haven’t noticed – she shook off all of that bad press from HP and Lucent and made herself a legitimate contender to lead the largest economy on the planet.

Is Fiornia bad at business? Maybe. But the scoreboard (her bank account and her surge in the polls) say otherwise. That is the only objective data we have. To say more would involve imagining how things would have gone at HP and Lucent without Fiorina. And your imagination is not evidence.

I say Trump and Fiorina are both super-hardened by failure. Both are at the tops of their games, and both are serious contenders for the presidency. Given the data at hand, if you don’t see Trump and Fiorina as equals in terms of business skills, you might want to have a talk with yourself about gender bias.

If you would like to learn more about how companies can extract value from failure, read The Other F-Word, by John Danner and Mark Coopersmith. They teach at Haas School of Business (Berkeley), where I got my MBA long ago. Now I work with them in the Berkeley start-up ecosystem.

My book takes a similar view on failure, but in the context of the individual.

In Top Tech Blog, whenever I see a story that says science has figured out a way to “mimic a spleen,” I get worried that the rest of my body will become worthless too. The spleen is like the canary in the colon. It always goes first.

Divorce Doesn’t Go Away and 9 Other Pointers Every Divorced Person Needs You to Know

We all know someone who’s divorced or divorcing or thinking about it. When we hear a couple is splitting, we feel a momentary sadness for them and then move on to our next task. Why? Because divorce isn’t shocking anymore. It’s become an unfortunate rite of passage for nearly 50 percent of us. But the numbers mean little to the people who have gone — or are going — through the process. The strength in numbers thing doesn’t apply to divorce because each and every divorce is uniquely decimating.

So, be mindful. Know that divorced folks are hurting in ways that may never resolve despite their best efforts to move on. Here are some tips for not shooting yourself in the foot around those who’ve dismantled their marriages and lives.

1. Being divorced isn’t a character flaw. Recently, I heard some friends discussing a male acquaintance. They didn’t have very many kind things to say about the guy. One friend chimed in while simultaneously rolling her eyes, “Well, he’s divorced so…” What the heck does that mean? That the ending of his marriage proves that he’s not of sound mind or character? Being divorced means his marriage didn’t work out and that’s it.

2. Being divorced doesn’t mean they can’t complain about the fallout. Even those in favor of ending their marriages may not be prepared for the emotional and financial consequences of doing so. Life is entirely pulled to pieces after a divorce. It’s a tough and lonely struggle. So, when your divorced friend complains she’s having a hard time making ends meet, your response should not be, “Well, this is what you wanted, isn’t it?”

3. Divorce doesn’t go away. Divorce is something you do that forever becomes something you are. It becomes part of the fabric of your being. Don’t dismiss someone’s divorce with, “Oh, that was ages ago! You must have completely moved on by now!” That’s not how it works. The long-reaching implications of divorce — emotional, financial, psychological — may never completely resolve.

4. Divorce isn’t always the reason kids screw up. Heck, doesn’t everyone’s kids screw up at some point? To assign a child’s behavior to his parent’s divorce isn’t entirely fair. Do kids sometimes act out as a result of divorce? Sure. But there may be something deeper going on that warrants a closer look. “Oh, well, you know his parents are divorcing,” is dismissive and unfairly judgmental.

5. Their next relationship isn’t a cure-all. So, your divorced friend is now in a good relationship. And you’re so happy for him. It seems this time around he’s really found Mr. or Ms. Right. But these new relationships are far more complex. Perhaps there are stepkids involved. Or angry, vindictive exes to deal with. Be patient with your friend as he navigates this often sticky road of second marriage.

6. Divorce changes friendships. When folks re-partner, there are a lot of traditions to merge. You may have spent the last 20 years celebrating every July 4th with your divorced friend, but now she has a partner who has spent the last 20 years celebrating it differently. Now your friend must make choices and compromises. Although it shakes up your expectations, be compassionate with her as she makes the hard decisions in order to keep her new relationship on track.

7. Don’t flaunt your intact family. Of course, you’re thrilled you’re celebrating your 20th wedding anniversary or gleefully planning the trip of a lifetime with your spouse, but be mindful to whom you’re speaking. There’s nothing wrong with telling your divorced friend about your plans, but be sure you’re not flaunting hurtful circumstances your friend has little chance of ever duplicating. Would you gush about parenting and pregnancy to someone who’s struggling with infertility? Of course not. So same goes for life’s milestones your divorced friend may never get to celebrate.

8. Don’t say you know what they’re going through. Because if you haven’t gone through it, you don’t. Divorce is a loss that shakes up one’s life on every conceivable level. And there are far and few other circumstances you can say the same about. Better to say, “I might not understand everything you’re going through, but you can always count on me to listen.”

9. Be ready to choose sides. This is a tough one you may swear you’ll never do but then life with your divorced friend proves to be complicated. Perhaps his new wife is at constant odds with your friend, his ex. Turns out that inviting them both to your daughter’s wedding may prove disastrous. Ask yourself which one was your true friend before their divorce. If that’s crystal clear, your decision has been made. If both partners were your true friends, speak with them about how to handle these uncomfortable situations. They will be better at guiding you because they’re living it every day.

10. Don’t disappear. Your friend needs you now more than ever. Get comfortable with divorce if you’re not. Your friend is not a social pariah, she’s a wounded puppy. She feels helpless and hopeless at times, regardless of how her life looks from the outside. Help her walk this difficult path knowing you play an intrinsic and irreplaceable part in her healing process.

To The Person Who Is Reading This Open Letter About This Open Letter

Let me first say, thank you.

This open letter hasn’t had an easy life. It started out as nothing. The bills were piling up. Family and friends had lost faith in its ability to get done.

And slowly with the help of a few good samaritans like yourself, it’s blossomed into the series of words that you’re reading right now.

You saw this open letter hitchhiking around on the information super highway and instead of driving past it, you stopped and you gave this little open letter a chance. Counted out by so many, this open letter had no one to turn to, and you stepped up.

You didn’t clap for my super un-athletic kid playing sports. You didn’t pay for my expensive Starbucks drink which, let’s be honest, I only get on the slight chance someone in front of me will pay for it. And you didn’t leave me a smile as a tip, which my student loan officer continues to refuse as payment.

The truth is, you didn’t have to click on this open letter at all. And you didn’t have to read this open letter, which thanks you for reading this open letter you didn’t have to click on. But despite the adversity placed in your path, you forged ahead and proved that you did read this open letter.

It’s not a perfect open letter, and will never claim to be. And yet, like people, that’s what makes open letters great, the imperfections. But you know what is perfect? Your curiosity.

Thank you.

‘Love Yourself’: Agender Person Goes From Being Bullied in the Newark Projects to Gracing the Cover of French Vogue (VIDEO)

I’m From Driftwood is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit archive for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer stories. New stories are posted on the site every Wednesday.

Author’s note: When asked which pronouns Andre prefers, they responded, “You can refer to me however you’d like. I don’t want that stuff to get in the way of the message.” I chose to use the pronouns “they,” “their,” and “theirs” when referring to Andre.

2015-05-08-1431119520-6358299-AndreJ.jpg

“Love yourself.” It seems like a simple-enough mantra, but for Andre J. it took a lot of learning experiences to understand its true power. After being bullied while growing up in the projects in Newark, Andre moved to Los Angeles to focus on their art. Andre’s unique look and style gained a lot of attention and admiration, earning three appearances on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and Being Bobby Brown with Whitney Houston. Andre recalls an epiphany:

I was like, “Oh, my goodness! All of the things that people teased me about or called me names about, or those things that were supposed to be my flaws, were really my strengths!”

Despite the great experience in Los Angeles, Andre decided to move back to New York City. On the flight back, Andre saw a documentary on two-spirits:

[W]hen I saw that, I was like, “Oh, my goodness, so this is not just about ‘gay’ or ‘straight.’ This is really about the spirit of people; this is about the way people feel about themselves.” So when I returned back to New York City, it was just like I had this new idea of life, this new energy, this spice. I decide I’m going to wear a wig and women’s clothes and heels and dresses. When I was doing this in 2005, no one looked like what I was doing.

Now that Andre had finally become closer to who they really are, people began to notice. Andre was booked to be photographed by world-renowned photographer Bruce Weber and ended up being the first male-assigned African-American person to grace the cover of French Vogue. Andre explains what’s so special about finally being oneself:

I think the overall vision of what it is that you see comes from the depth of me loving myself. It’s not just about the exterior. The exterior is what it is because the interior actually is in alignment with it. I love myself.

Why You Should Always Say ‘Hi’ to That Cute Person on the Subway (VIDEO)

2015-04-29-1430338936-6124849-SimoneDavis.jpg

I’m From Driftwood is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit archive for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer stories. New stories are posted on the site every Wednesday.

We’ve all been there: You see someone cute on the subway but don’t know what to do or if you should chat them up. Simone Davis recalls finding herself in that exact scenario one morning on the way to work:

The train comes, and we get on the same train together. I keep looking up at her, and I keep looking back down at my poetry book and writing, and then I keep looking up at her. … I don’t say anything, because I’m too shy. And I’m thinking, “This girl will think I’m crazy for just walking across the train and talking to her out of nowhere.”

Fortunately, the object of Simone’s affection wasn’t quite as shy:

[J]ust before she gets off the train, she hands me a note. The train doors close, and I look down at this note, and the note says, “I’d like to read it/hear it when it’s finished.” And it has her email address after it. And I’m like, “Yes! I won!”

Unfortunately, it just wasn’t meant to be — yet. After some email mishaps, there was no communication between the two for a full year and a half. Fate wasn’t quite finished with these two, though. Simone’s friends insisted that she go out with them one night, and after some resistance she agreed:

I’m sitting there, having a good time with my friends, and in this girl walks, the girl from the train a year and a half ago. I start telling my bros this story, and they’re like, “What? What? What are you doing still sitting here?! Go in there and talk to her! Go in there and get her!”

After some dancing and reintroductions, Simone and Katrina hit it off once again. This time, though, they immediately set up a first date, which ended up involving a ferry ride and a first kiss. Simone’s advice? If you ever have a chance, take it and go all in:

Take that chance. Take that risk on speaking up, because unlike my story, we often don’t get second chances. Sometimes we only get one shot. It took one person to step up and to make that introduction to make this story happen.

A Question Every Person Going Through a Divorce Asks

It’s a question that every person going through divorce asks: How Do I Get Over this Hurt? They ask their friends, their family, their therapist, even themselves. They also ask me. And here is how I answer.

In most cases, when two people get divorced, one person wants it and the other doesn’t. I always have a hard time deciding whose shoes I’d rather be in because both breaking up with someone and being the one broken up with are gut-wrenching.

Here’s a benefit of being the one broken up with: Unlike the person who ended the relationship, the person who was broken up with will never have doubt that they did the right thing, or that things might have been different had they tried harder, or even that they miss the person and realize later they made a huge mistake.

The person who was broken up with didn’t have a choice. Their ex wanted the divorce. So, there is no self-doubt, guilt, or indecision. It was done to them.

Now, is that easy to deal with? Absolutely not. It is brutal. But, here is one thing that might help you get over the hurt. Pretend I am a psychic who is able to see into your future. And, let’s say you are a woman, and this is what I predict for you:

It is five years from now. You are sitting at a kitchen table having dinner with an attractive man, who seems really happy being there. On your left ring finger is a diamond and a wedding band. The two of you are laughing. You look very very happy.

Here’s the thing. No one knows (including me) that this will be your scenario, and I don’t even know if being remarried is what you want. My point of painting this beautiful picture of your possible future is that you WILL have a beautiful future, and you WILL get a life that is happy and that works for you. It just takes time, and you have to go through the misery of your divorce to get to the other side (the happiness side.)

Remember that movie, The Shawshank Redemption, where Tim Robbins escapes from prison by crawling through a sewer pipe? It’s kind of like that. He had to spend 20 years digging a hole in his cell, and then he had to crawl through crap (literally) to get to deserved freedom and ultimate happiness. You are in that hole right now. I was there. So was every person who has ever gone through a divorce. But you will come out of it and have a future. It might be the future I just described, or it might be something else, perhaps a career you are passionate about, or a new hobby that changes your life. The beauty of it is that your future is your choice!

Thinking this way is how you get over the hurt. Grieve the loss, feel sorry for yourself for a little while, (not too long) and then get tough and start to rebuild. Focus on figuring out what you want — career, hobbies, friends, etc. and then go get it! As for future romantic relationships, it’s natural to feel scared that if you put your heart out there again, someone could do to you what your husband or wife did. But, try to overcome that fear because if you put your heart out there again, some guy (maybe the guy at your kitchen table) might love and cherish you forever. Ask yourself if it’s worth the risk.

You WILL get over this hurt. You just will. Changing the way you think about it helps.

First Person: Stevie Ray Vaughan is Gone but His Music Lingers On

First Person: Stevie Ray Vaughan is Gone but His Music Lingers OnI'm shocked to see that it has now been a full 20 years since Stevie Ray Vaughan and several others were killed when their helicopter, which they boarded after a sold-out concert, crashed into a hill on Aug. 27, 1990. I first became aware Stevie Ray Vaughan — like I did with so many other artists — through watching MTV endlessly through the '80s. Do they even make music videos anymore?) I would definitely put Vaughan on a par with Eric Clapton as a guitar god, and many others have even gone out of their way to compare him to Jimi Hendrix.

Angelina Jolie Never Thought She'd Have Kids Or 'Meet The Right Person'

Angelina Jolie may be starring in a fairy tale, but she never thought she’d be living one.

The “Maleficent” star covers Elle magazine’s June issue and admits that she never imagined her life would turn out the way it did.

“I never thought I’d have children, I never thought I’d be in love, I never thought I’d meet the right person,” Jolie, who has six children with fiance Brad Pitt, said. “Having come from a broken home — you kind of accept that certain things feel like a fairy tale, and you just don’t look for them.”

The 38-year-old also opened up to Elle about why she cast her daughter Vivienne as a young Aurora in the “Sleeping Beauty” adaptation.

“And my little Vivienne — we call her my shadow, because there’s nothing I can do to shake her. I can be tired, I can be grumpy, I can be in a terrible mood, and she doesn’t care. It’s ‘Mommy, Mommy,’ and she’ll cling to me,” Jolie said, adding that Vivienne was the perfect person for the role. “We knew that she would still do that thing, she’d still smile at me and insist that I pick her up. So we couldn’t really cast anybody else.”

Her son Pax, age 10, and daughter Zahara, age 9, also appear in the film, which hits theaters May 30. However, Jolie and Pitt don’t plan on keeping their children in front of the cameras for long: “Brad and I made the decision that we wouldn’t keep them from sets and the fun of making movies, but we wouldn’t [glorify it either] — we wouldn’t make it a good thing or a bad thing. But I would really prefer they do something else.”

“After two days of it, Brad and I were so stressed we never wanted to do it again,” Jolie added.
