News in Brief: Anthropologists Unearth Possible Missing Link Between A- And B-List Celebrities

LOS ANGELES—In a groundbreaking discovery that could help shed light on the evolution of fame, anthropologists from UCLA announcedThursday that they had unearthed a potential missing link between A- and B-list celebrities. “Though such a link has been hypothesized for decades, our team was able to identify a possible transitional individual, which we discovered in a recent independent film, who appears to exist between big-name, bankable movie stars and the secondary tier of supporting and small-screen actors,” said lead researcher Heather Collins, noting that any evidence linking the leading cast of Avengers: Age Of Ultron to California’s most vaguely recognizable character actors could serve as a clue to how stars have ascended the Hollywood ranks over the ages. “When considering the highest apex celebrities, such as George Clooney or Meryl Streep, we must ask: What preceded them? This missing link could be the key to understanding how a …

Is Sexless Dating Even Possible If You’re Over 40?

There are many reasons men and women have an interest in dating. They range from just wanting to have fun, the desire to meet interesting people, the need or want for sex, or the biggie: the hope of falling in love. But what if you have an interest in dating, but wish to take sex off the table? Is that realistic in today’s society and is it even possible when you’re over 40?

My gut reaction to this question is, why does dating have to equate to sex? Not just for dating over 40, but for any age? I look at dating and sex as going hand in hand if the chemistry and situation is right, but I think the two are mutually exclusive until that happens.

I think people put way too much pressure on themselves when it comes to sex. Having sex seems to be everyone’s biggest fear–men and women–in dating after divorce, which is understandable because it is a vulnerable, scary time where self-esteem isn’t at its best.

I have to wonder if there are expectations from daters when it comes to sex. I, personally have no expectations of sex or no sex when dating, and I don’t think there are any rules when it comes to dating and sex.

If someone tells me he or she went on a first date and had sex, I don’t judge. Do I think it is wise? In the majority of cases, no. But there are exceptions.

If someone says, “I’ve been out with this guy five times and we still haven’t slept together,” I don’t judge, either. One or both of the people have to feel like it is right to take things to a physical level, and if neither or one does, then sex is off the table, right?

The only thing I think is kind of gross, and again I’m not judging anyone else, but for me, I couldn’t sleep with someone who I suspect is sleeping with other women. I have written this before and people have written back and said, “Get over it!” But that’s just my stance. Everyone has to do what they feel is right for them.

Sex can be breathtaking and fun and exciting and mean the world with the right person. Sex can also be awkward and boring and considered a huge mistake if under the wrong circumstances or with the wrong person. Every situation is different.

My opinion is, if you want to engage in sexless dating, go out on dates with no expectations of sex. Assume you aren’t going to get physical and enjoy feeling safe in that comfort zone. Go on dates for companionship, interest, fun, to make new friends, and maybe even for a really nice kiss.

If you find yourself in a situation where someone expects sex, that’s his problem. No one should ever feel obligated or pressured to do anything he or she does not want to do. Also, make sure you never put yourself in a unsafe situation, like going back to the home of a guy you just met, or having him over.

On the other hand, you might surprise yourself. You might meet someone you really like and you might end up wanting to sleep with him. I’m sure it is hard to imagine if you go into dating with a sexless mindset), but I’ve seen it a thousand times in newly separated men and women. The spark ignites and it is totally unexpected. If and when that happens is dependent on the situation, the two people, and honestly, the stars. It’s beautiful to see, as a moment like that brings anyone who has ever had a broken heart hope and rejuvenation.

Just remember that dating doesn’t have to mean sex, unless you and the person you are dating wants that.

Take the pressure off yourself and just enjoy your sexless dating. As scary as it might seem, dating can be really really fun and interesting. Dating means the possibility of meeting people who become gifts in your life. And dare I say that finding love could happen? Don’t rule that out. Statistics show that a couple falls in love every 93 minutes!

Honestly, I just made that up, but one thing is for sure. You aren’t going to meet him (or her) if you sit on your couch. So, if you choose, engage in sexless dating and stop thinking too much about the pressure of taking off your clothes. Most of that pressure is probably coming from you.

News: Experts Say Best Option Now Is Keeping Nation As Comfortable As Possible Till End

WASHINGTON—Saying there were no other options remaining and that continued intervention would only prolong the nation’s suffering, experts concluded Tuesday that the best course of action is to keep the United States as comfortable as possible until the end.

According to those familiar with its condition, the country’s long, painful decline over the past several decades has made it clear that the most compassionate choice at this juncture is to do whatever is possible to ensure America is at ease during its last moments.

“We need to accept the fact that the U.S. doesn’t have long—simply helping it pass that time in comfort is the humane thing to do,” said economist Danielle Martin, speaking on behalf of a large group of experts ranging from sociologists and historians to lawmakers and environmentalists, all of whom confirmed they had “done everything [they] could.” “Attempting to stabilize …

SuicideGirls Respond to Richard Prince in the Best Way Possible

Gagosian Gallery

On Tuesday, Missy Suicide, the founder of the online alt-community SuicideGirls, received an email from one of the site’s photographers: Her Instagram image had been reproduced and sold for $ 90,000.

The controversial appropriation artist Richard Prince had taken several of the group’s Instagram images, in fact—provocative photographs of girls with rainbow-colored hair and tattooed limbs—blown them up to nearly six-feet-tall, and sold them for a boatload of money. Prince has made headlines for appropriating famous images before, from a Marlboro campaign to the cover of The Catcher in the Rye, but the backlash to his most recent copyright infringement has reached an all-time high.

“It’s such a violation because the people that are actually featured in the images couldn’t even dream of affording that,” Missy told us by phone. “I can’t imagine someone spending that much money on anything other than, like, a house.”

Missy and the rest of the SuicideGirls ruled out the idea of pursuing legal action and opted for a more clever response: creating a print that people can actually afford. Yesterday, they turned the tables on Prince and released their own blown-up prints—for just $ 90.

Online print store Eyes on Walls offered their services to the project free of cost, with all proceeds going to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit defending digital civil rights. In just one day, the SuicideGirls have already sold more than 250 prints. “We’re not making any money on the endeavor, but we’re trying to soften the blow a little bit.”

For the founder of the site, the story is Robin Hood in reverse: Prince is “stealing from the masses and feeding it to the rich.” In the art world, the verdict on Prince’s ethics is mixed. New York magazine’s Jerry Saltz called his exhibit “genius trolling,” while others say he’s a phony. Without fail, however, Prince draws a comparison to another famous image appropriator: Andy Warhol.

Missy sees things a little differently—the Instagrams are an expression of her group’s identity. “The difference is that Andy Warhol was stealing from a corporation and Prince is stealing from a kid,” she said. “It’s like a kick in the teeth to punk rock. He’s appropriating a culture.”

This Possible ‘Harry Potter’ Couple Would Ruin Harry Potter’s Childhood Even More

Harry Potter might want to keep away from the latest edition of The Quibbler.

Following a recent Instagram post, the online speculation is that Harry’s dad, James Potter, aka actor Robbie Jarvis, may be dating Luna Lovegood, aka actress Evanna Lynch. And if Harry’s childhood wasn’t ruined before, it definitely is now:

That photo isn’t all, though. Despite the fact that E! wasn’t given conformation from Jarvis’ reps that the two were dating, other cute photos just seem to add to the evidence. Take this one for example:

Trying on hats with @msevylynch. Which one of us looks better? #fancy

A photo posted by Robbie (@awildrobbieattacks) on

And check out this one where they apparently took Polyjuice Potion and transformed into owls. Nice try, James and Luna, but we know it’s you:

Owls!

A photo posted by Robbie (@awildrobbieattacks) on

So why is this such a big deal? OK, first, let’s skip past the fact that in “Harry Potter,” Luna came in during Ginny’s year and is younger than Harry. Just forget that. But didn’t Harry also take Luna to Professor Slughorn’s Christmas party? Now his dad might be taking her out? Oh, and what about Lily Potter, James? What about Lily?

Voldemort has done some pretty messed up things to Harry Potter before, but this might be crossing the line.

That being said, we wish all the happiness in the world to the potential couple because they are just actors and Harry Potter isn’t real. Or that’s what people want you to believe, anyway.

Representatives for the actors did not immediately respond to The Huffington Post’s requests for comment.

PBS Investigates Possible Censorship Of Ben Affleck’s Slavery In ‘Finding Your Roots’

NEW YORK (AP) — PBS is conducting an internal review following revelations that producers of “Finding Your Roots” may have violated the network’s editorial standards after a request by Ben Affleck that the program not reveal he had a slave-owning ancestor.

Meanwhile, Affleck has expressed regret for seeking to have the information omitted from the episode that featured the actor and aired last October.

“We deserve neither credit nor blame for our ancestors and the degree of interest in this story suggests that we are, as a nation, still grappling with the terrible legacy of slavery,” Affleck posted on his Facebook page Tuesday night.

The review by PBS and New York station WNET began Saturday, according to a statement released Tuesday by PBS spokeswoman Anne Bentley.

“We have been moving forward deliberately yet swiftly to conduct this review,” she said.

In his Facebook post, Affleck acknowledges that, initially, “I didn’t want any television show about my family to include a guy who owned slaves. I was embarrassed.”

He says he lobbied Henry Louis Gates, the Harvard scholar who hosts and produces the show, “the same way I lobby directors about what takes of mine I think they should use.”

“It’s important to remember that this isn’t a news program,” Affleck said of “Finding Your Roots,” which traces the ancestry of well-known guests. “You voluntarily provide a great deal of information about your family, making you quite vulnerable. The assumption is that they will never be dishonest but they will respect your willingness to participate and not look to include things you think would embarrass your family.”

Affleck’s request came to light last week in hacked Sony emails published online by whistleblower site WikiLeaks.

Gates and PBS said then they didn’t censor the slave-owner details. Instead, more interesting ancestors of the actor emerged and Gates chose to highlight them instead.

But in an email exchange between Gates and Sony Pictures co-chairman and chief executive Michael Lynton — part of a trove of hundreds of thousands of emails and documents from last year’s Sony hack published online by WikiLeaks — Gates asks Lynton for advice on how to handle Affleck’s request.

“Here’s my dilemma,” says Gates in one email, dated July 22, 2014 — “confidentially, for the first time, one of our guests has asked us to edit out something about one of his ancestors — the fact that he owned slaves. Now, four or five of our guests this season descend from slave owners, including (prolific documentary filmmaker) Ken Burns. We’ve never had anyone ever try to censor or edit what we found. He’s a megastar. What do we do?”

Lynton replies that it all depends on who knows that the information was in the documentary already.

“I would take it out if no one knows, but if it gets out that you are editing the material based on this kind of sensitivity then it gets tricky. Again, all things being equal I would definitely take it out,” Lynton wrote that same day.

When the segment aired Oct. 14, Gates focused on an Affleck ancestor who was an occultist, a Revolutionary War relative and Affleck’s mother, who was a “freedom rider” in 1964.

On Saturday, PBS said the network did not know of the exchanges between Gates, Sony and Affleck, and wasn’t part of editorial decisions made by Gates and his fellow producers.

5 Possible Choices for Hillary’s Running Mate

One thing we know for certain is that it won’t be a quasi-Republican, weak-kneed, moderate Democrat. Unless Mitt Romney comes riding in on a white horse at the last minute, and becomes a formidable opponent, she won’t need to kiss up to moderate Republicans. Polls show her doing remarkably well against anyone already mentioned, including Jeb Bush.

Another thing we know is that it won’t be Joe Biden. While it’s possible he’d accept a position in Hillary’s cabinet (Secretary of State or Defense) he’s already done his time. Although the job has been depicted, historically, as thankless and puerile, Biden seemed to thrive in the position. No shrinking violet, it gave him the public platform he coveted. Still, it’s a case of “Been there, done that.”

Here are five choices in descending order of probability.

ELIZABETH WARREN
If Warren is looking for a podium from which to preach her long-needed, anti-Wall Street reform philosophy, here’s a question: Which will get her more attention–the U.S. Senate, where she’s one of 100, or the Vice-Presidency of the United States? Hillary personally likes Liz and would love to turn her loose, allowing her to say all the things that she, as president, probably can’t say.

The obvious downside would be inducing people to vote for two women. Hillary would be our first female president, but ushering in the first woman vice-president on the same ticket might be too much to ask of the non-progressives. On the other hand, for women voters still on the fence, a Sorority Sister ticket might just be enough to sway them.

HOWARD DEAN
He’s smart, ambitious, antsy, regretful at not having made more of his earlier (2004) opportunity, and eager to mount another appearance on the national stage. Both he and Hillary come off as preternaturally intelligent, but what she lacks in old-fashioned likeability and trustworthiness, Dean possesses in spades. He’s also an M.D., a family doctor. It would be a great pairing.

BERNIE SANDERS
Like Howard Dean, another Vermonter, and my personal favorite. But unlike Dean, he’s a wise and savvy prairie socialist who would give the ticket the necessary “leftwing heft” it requires. His place on the ticket might encourage hope-to-die McGovernites and Ramsey Clark loyalists to vote for a “hawk” like Hillary.

Although Sanders will be 75 years old come election day in 2016, he is physically and mentally fit. Indeed, even at his advanced years, he is arguably mentally sharper than Rick Perry was when he was a fraternity pledge at Texas A&M.

ANTHONY VILLARAIGOSA
Former Mayor of Los Angeles, and perennial political wannabe. His virtues: He’s likeable, he’s Latino, he’s articulate, he’s wildly ambitious, and he’s just humble and clueless enough to interpret being added to the ticket in order to secure the Latino vote as a “compliment.” Also, anyone who failed the bar exam four times can’t be all bad.

BILL CLINTON
A bloodless coup. Hillary becomes president. Bill becomes vice-president. Hillary suddenly resigns. Bill becomes president. He vows to accomplish in his third term what he couldn’t finish during his first two. Ken Starr beware. Payback is a bitch.

My Life Would Not Be Possible Without Feminism

I recently got married. I have two children. I own a house, and I have a full-time job. At first glance, none of these circumstances may strike you as remarkable. In fact, maybe you share in many of them. But if I had been born even 50 years earlier, I wouldn’t have many of the rights that I have now to love who I love, make choices about my body and own property.

I don’t want to bore you with a long history of feminism, first and foremost, because I don’t know the long history of feminism, but I do know this: Without it, my life would not be possible. In the mid-1800s, women in the U.S. earned the right to own property. This might not seem like a big deal, but at the time women were property.

That’s right. The husband owned the wife, the land and the money. If the husband died, sometimes the wife was allowed to own his property, but she wasn’t allowed to do anything with it. It just had her name on it, which was actually his name. The whole point was to keep the property — the woman and the land and the money — in the family or owned by the brothers, the sons and the fathers. This had far-ranging implications.

It still forms the foundation of many of our current arguments about pro-choice and abortions. It still impacts the laws that we have about who can marry and why. It’s the reason that we objectify women’s bodies and try to outlaw yoga pants. But here is how it affects me.

After I graduated from college, an idea that only made sense if I was going to contribute something to society besides children and clean laundry, I got a job. My job paid me money. I used that money to pay my rent and go out to eat a lot. This is the first way that I enjoyed feminism.

While eating more than my fair share of blue cheese and paying my fair share of rent using money from my new job, I met someone and fell in love. This person also happened to be a woman with her own paycheck, her own cheese and a house that she had purchased by qualifying for a loan at a bank.

After a little more than a year of dating, we decided that we wanted to be together forever, but we couldn’t get married because there were no laws indicating that a woman could own another woman. In fact, the idea that two women would want to merge households was a concept that had been overlooked entirely. There was no law for it. And no law against it. Just blank space.

So, we did the next best thing, we bought property together. We also got a joint checking account. And for many people, including our employers but excluding our government, this demonstrated enough commitment to each other that we could get other benefits, like paying for each other’s health insurance and getting a couples discount at the gym.

We still got asked if we wanted separate checks at restaurants and when I bought a car, the dealer suggested that I talk to my husband before I made a final decision, so I went shopping elsewhere. We suffered these indignities with stoicism and sarcasm, and then 10 years and four dogs later, we decided that we wanted to have children.

This, again, is where property, in the form of cold, hard cash, came to bear. I bought blood tests and lab results, medical procedures and tissue donations in the form of human sperm. Most of this was not covered by our medical insurance, in spite of the fact that I had a very generous plan and a supportive employer. After three years of credit card loans and psychological torture, I gave birth to a baby girl. And almost two years after that, I had another one.

In the eyes of the law, I was the parent and my spouse was not, so she adopted our children. What does this mean? It means that we paid someone, social services, to evaluate our house, our relationship and our circumstances to determine if she was worthy to be a parent. It means that I went to court and testified that, yes, in fact, the woman I would marry if the law would allow such a thing, was the other parent to my children and she was not coercing me for the opportunity to live with them, wipe their noses and badger them about picking up the pieces of their Barbie playhouse.

She was, in fact, in love with them. She was there when they were born. She got up in the middle of the night to comfort them when they are sick and defend them with the ferocity of a wild animal when a mean gesture was made in their direction. And then, one day, months after my oldest daughter had started kindergarten, and I was taking the youngest back to daycare after a visit to the dentist, I got a call.

“The Attorney General is issuing marriage licenses,” my spouse said.

“He is? How ironic!” I said. “Do you want to get married again?”

“No, do you?”

“Not really. But if it’s important to you, I will.”

The week before, we had just returned from a trip to Chicago where we had flown together without friends or family and without much warning to tie the knot. We were waiting to see if a “gay marriage” law would pass in Colorado, but it was the end of September and we were running out of time that year. So we bought plane tickets, made a beeline for the marriage license office, enjoyed a day in the city, said “I do” and came home.

It’s been a tremendous amount of work exercising the rights I’ve been granted and being responsible for the property I own. We have bankrolled the entire thing with 78 cents on every dollar that a man would have had for the same job done. We have filled out forms and jumped through hoops to take what might have been granted easily or celebrated more if we were a man and a woman with jobs, a house and children. But I’m still tremendously grateful for what I have. Many people have much, much less.

So when Nicki Minaj, Shailene Woodley and Carrie Underwood are not sure if they are so “extreme” as to be feminists, I would suggest that they have another look at the string of diamonds, the mansion or the record contract that drives their privileged lifestyle and ask themselves if they would like to have all that freedom and independence transferred to their father or their brother, because women shouldn’t own property, they should be property. Your choice. And that alone, having the choice, is feminism.

Granada Defender Fails To Block Goal In Worst Possible Way

Real Madrid trounced Granada CF on Sunday with a final score of 9-1.

But as this Vine painfully illustrates, it wasn’t for a lack of effort, as one Granada defender left it all on the field — and then some — while failing to block the first goal of the game, scored by Gareth Bale:

Following Bale’s game-opening score, Cristiano Ronaldo proceeded to score five goals of his own, three of which he scored in a period of just eight minutes.

Grace Helbig’s Mom Dealt With Her Temper Tantrums In The Best Way Possible

In her viral videos, Grace Helbig comes across as that cool friend with the best one-liners and silly attitude. As a kid, she wasn’t always so chill.

The YouTube star recently sat down with Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show,” and revealed what she was like as a child.

“I threw temper tantrums a lot, which I think is just being creative with your emotions,” she joked.

One such creative moment for little Grace included a temper tantrum as a result of her mom telling her she couldn’t have the cookies she wanted. According to the YouTuber, things got pretty aggressive.

“I think I was like 6 years old, and I grabbed her hair and ripped a chunk of her hair out,” she said.

To teach her a lesson, Grace’s mom drove her and her brothers to show them the place they would end up if they misbehaved — the police station. A little girl happened to be walking into the station at the same time, which definitely worked in her mother’s favor. The experience, or what Grace called “an abbreviated ‘Scared Straight’ program,” was successful, and she vowed to never be a bad kid again.

Take it from Grace, kids. Don’t mess with your mother.

‘Morning Joe’ Hosts Blame Rappers For Racist Frat Video And Twitter Responds In The Best Possible Way

Black Twitter blasted the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Wednesday for their controversial remarks about the racist actions of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity members at the University of Oklahoma.

Hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough brought up rapper Waka Flocka Flame’s “disgust” with the video and his decision to cancel his upcoming campus appearance before suggesting that rappers are in fact to blame for the fraternity’s racist behavior.

“If you look at every single song, I guess you call these, that he’s written, it’s a bunch of garbage,” Brzezinski said. “It’s full of N-words, it’s full of F-words. It’s wrong. And he shouldn’t be disgusted with them, he should be disgusted with himself.”

“The kids that are buying hip-hop or gangster rap, it’s a white audience, and they hear this over and over again,” Scarborough added. “So do they hear this at home? Well, chances are good, no, they heard a lot of this from guys like this who are now acting shocked.”

Brzezsinski clarified her comments in a later appearance on MSNBC, saying, “The students in the video are responsible for their behavior. And as we said on our show this morning, they did it, and it’s beyond appalling.”

“In no way is anybody else to blame for what they did on that bus,” she continued. “They are responsible and they made that choice.”

But the backlash had already begun. Twitter users took to their timelines to slam the statements through a satirical hashtag that has since become a trending topic: #RapAlbumsThatCausedSlavery.

Here are just a few examples of the tweets proving Black Twitter never disappoints:

Disneytoon Studios worked closely with CalFire to make “Planes: Fire & Rescue” as authentic as possible

“Do your research.”

That is the lesson that John Lasseter — Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney & Pixar Animation Studios — has repeatedly drilled into the artists that he works with. That before they jump feet-first into developing a brand-new animated feature, these filmmakers must first understand the world that this movie’s characters are supposed to occupy.

2014-07-16-CalFire3.jpg

In the case of Pixar’s “Up,” this meant that Pete Docter and his production team had to go to Venezuela. Where it then took them three days of hard traveling by airplanes, jeeps & helicopters before they finally reached Mount Roraima (i.e., the highest point of the Pakaraima chain of tepui plateau in South America) and Angel Falls.

And when it came to Disney “Frozen,” animators & effects artists flew to Jackson Hole, WY in the middle of winter. Just so that they could then don authentic period clothing like long skirts and mush through deep snow. So that — when it came time to animate Anna’s struggle to reach Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post & Sauna — they could then get all of the details just right.

But when it came time to research “Planes: Fire & Rescue,” the story team from Disneytoon Studios didn’t get to fly off to South America or Wyoming. They just hopped in a car and drove on down to the Hemet-Ryan Air Attack Base. Where they then talked with dozens of aerial firefighters who work for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection AKA CalFire.

2014-07-16-CalFire5.jpg

“We worked with these guys for four years,” Paul Gerard, the director of Creative Development for Disneytoon Studios, explained. “And CalFire helped us so much with ‘Fire & Rescue.’ They let us know everything that you’d possibly want to know about Air Attack. And we’d then not only try to incorporate as much of that information as we possibly could into our film … Well, we’d also invite members of the Air Attack team to come look at our movie while it was still on reels. We’d then take the additional notes that these guys gave us and fold them into our film to make ‘Fire & Rescue’ as authentic as possible.”

Now I know that — especially for folks outside of the animation industry — that it may sound kind of strange that Disneytoon Studios would put this much effort into a sequel to 2013’s “Planes.” Given that the first film in this series had been such a success … Well, it must have been awfully tempting to just put this project on auto-pilot. Have Dusty Crophopper compete in yet another ’round-the-world race.

“But that’s not how we do things here at DisneyToon Studios,” said Jeffrey M. Howard — the co-screenwriter of both the original “Planes” as well as “Fire & Rescue.” “We weren’t looking to repeat ourselves with the second film in the ‘Planes’ series. We wanted to do different things with Dusty this time around. Have him go off and explore an entirely different corner of his world.”

2014-07-16-CalFire7.jpg

Which — given that the central character of this series is a crop duster turned world-class racer — was something of a challenge. But it was actually “Fire & Rescue” director Bobs Gannaway who, during the research phase of this Disneytoon Studios production, stumbled across the factoid which eventually allowed Dusty to soar off in an entirely new direction.

“It was Bobs — as he was researching the history of agricultural airplanes — who discovered that these planes had also been used for firefighting. Only instead of dropping chemicals & fertilizer on fields, they’d then drop water on burning forests,” Howard continued. “And it was that neat bit of trivia — that crop dusters had once been used as single engine air tankers — that then allowed us to step away from the world of racing and go explore this entirely different aspect of aviation.”

Which is why Jeffrey, Bobs & Paul made their first trip to Hemet-Ryan Air Attack Base back in 2010. But what they thought was going to be a simple research trip suddenly changed the overall theme of their film.

2014-07-16-CalFire1.jpg

“Now you have to understand that a lot of us who worked on these movies were big aviation geeks. So we were like ‘Show us the planes. Let us see what you have,’ ” said Howard said. “And as the folks at Hemet-Ryan showed us their fleet, we discovered that all of their aircraft are repurposed. I mean, there’s actually one aircraft in the Western World that’s been purpose-built specifically for firefighting. Everything else was originally built to do something else.”

“Take — for example — the S2, CalFire’s main tanker. It used to be a sub fighter. And the OV-10 Bronco was a military reconnaissance plane. While the Huey had dozens of roles going all the way back to Vietnam,” Jeffrey continued. “So all of these aircraft had originally been designed to do other things. But now that they were part of the Air Attack fleet, they all had these brand-new lives doing different & challenging things. And taking that into account … Well, that’s when the idea that ‘Fire & Rescue’ might then become this story about second chances began formulating in our heads.”

So to get better acquainted with the world of CalFire, the folks at Disneytoon Studios regularly began making the 95-mile drive from the Disney Media Campus in Glendale to Hemet-Ryan Air Attack Base in Riverside. Where Battalion Chief Travis Alexander was happy to throw open the door and let Disney’s artists get better acquainted with the world of aerial firefighting.

2014-07-16-CalFire2.jpg

“They let us see everything, including the red stuff which they drop on fires. They call it slurry or mud. And it’s red so you can then see it as you drop it out of a plane. You can see from a distance. And it has the sort of consistency of snot,” Gerard stated. “Now I have an 8 year-old son. So I know a lot about snot. And that’s the stuff that they fill up the S2 with. Because on the sub hunter, they’ve built in these tanks. And on the back, they have this double gauge to just plug in and they then load up this plane up with slurry.”

“Now you have to understand that — when you’re working with artists & animators — we’re just a bunch of big kids. So as soon as you’d say ‘Hey, this slurry feels like snot,’ a bunch of animators would then immediately say ‘Let me feel,’ ” Jeffrey laughed.

The other thing that Gannaway, Gerard & Howard discovered as they continued to hang out at Hemet-Ryan Air Attack Base was that it wasn’t just the aircraft that had been repurposed. That a lot of the base’s buildings / support structures had either been repurposed or built from scratch.

2014-07-16-CalFire6.jpg

“We’d point at some building and say ‘Has that always been here?’ And the Air Attack team members would say Nope. ‘We just got some lumber and some corrugated metal and put it up ourselves,’ Jeffrey continued. “Everywhere you looked around the Air Attack base, the CalFire crew had made smart use of repurposed materials. Take — for example — the cabinets where they store their giveaway t-shirts and coffee mugs. These cabinets used to belong to this video game store that was just down the road. They were where that store used to store all of their Nintendos. That video store was just giving these cabinets away because they didn’t need them anymore. CalFire snatched these cabinets up and put them to great use at the Air Attack base. And that look — this place where the pieces didn’t often look like they quite fit together because they’re actually made up of all this hand-me-down equipment — began to inform the look & design of ‘Fire & Rescue.’ “

Mind you, this isn’t to say that everyone at Disneytoon Studios was immediately on board with the idea that Dusty Crophopper’s next adventure should be set in the world of aerial firefighting.

“Just like at Walt Disney Animation Studios & Pixar, we have a story trust at Disneytoon Studios that directors can pitch their stories to. And one time after Bobs had pitched the story for ‘Fire & Rescue,’ one of the other directors here said ‘It’s really convenient — from a story-telling point-of-view — that just as Dusty lands, the klaxon goes off, there’s this fire and the team then has to go fight it,” Paul said.

2014-07-16-CalFire4.jpg

“But here’s the thing: One time when we had brought all of our artists down to Hemet-Ryan to talk with the Air Attack team and draw all of their planes, that actually happened to us. The klaxon went off and we then had to quickly get all of our artists off of the runway,” Gerard continued. “And we were like ‘Wow! A fire!” And the Air Attack team was like ‘You guys only hear about the big ones.’ And then they took off.”

FYI: That “You only hear about the big ones” line actually wound up in the movie. As did Hemet-Ryan Air Attack’s funky hand-me-down quality as well as its repurposed air fleet. Which is why — if you want to see the most authentic film that’s been made about aerial firefighting in the past 50 years — then you really need to go see Disneytoon Studios’ “Planes: Fire & Rescue.” Which opens in theaters this Friday.

Bill Murray Crashes Engagement Photo In Most Bill Murray Way Possible

As far as good omens go, this one’s got to be pretty high up there.

Ashley Donald and Erik Rogers were taking their engagement photos around downtown Charleston, S.C. in April when they got a surprise drop-in from the man, the myth, the legend himself: Bill Murray. Clearly, their marriage is destined for greatness.

Photographer Raheel Gauba of Fia Forever Photography — who captured the awesome picture and posted it to Facebook on Tuesday — explained to HuffPost Weddings how it all went down.

We were walking around downtown Charleston, taking in the romance of the city and enjoying the scenery. I found this staircase and asked the couple to go get comfortable. Now when I do these shoots, sometimes I get tourists whistling or making funny faces or simply congratulating the couple. When I set up Ashley and Erik, I saw this look of surprise on their faces as they looked over my shoulder. I asked them to look at the camera, but they just looked stunned and with his eyes, Erik motioned that I better look behind me. As I turned around to potentially ask the person distracting them to give us a moment, I see Bill Murray with his shirt up, belly out and patting it — his attempt to make the couple laugh. I joined the couple in the shock and surprise of the moment. At that point, I invited him to join the couple for a quick shot and he did. So genuine and nice of him to make the couple’s day!

Just last month, Murray crashed a bachelor party in Charleston and imparted some words of relationship wisdom upon the young gentlemen.

“If you have someone that you think is The One, don’t just sort of think in your ordinary mind, ‘Okay, let’s pick a date. Let’s plan this and make a party and get married,'” he said. “Take that person and travel around the world. Buy a plane ticket for the two of you to travel all around the world, and go to places that are hard to go to and hard to get out of. And if when you come back to JFK, when you land in JFK, and you’re still in love with that person, get married at the airport.”

Note to self: Book a trip to Charleston ASAP.

Beats music service sued by former executive amid possible sale to Apple

Colombia's track cyclist Edwin Alcibiades Avila Vanegas uses a pair of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones at the Velodrome during the London 2012 Olympic Games(Reuters) – Beats Electronics, which is close to being sold to Apple Inc for $ 3.2 billion, has been sued by the founder of a music service Beats bought two years ago claiming he has been cheated out of his share of the company. David Hyman, the founder of the music subscription service MOG Inc, filed a lawsuit on Wednesday in Los Angeles superior court claiming he was purposely terminated so that Beats could avoid granting him his equity stake in the company. Hyman claims that as part of the agreement Beats made to buy MOG in 2012, he would have been granted, over a period of time, 2.5 percent of the outstanding equity interest in Beats if the company reached a market value of $ 500 million or more. Rapper Dr. Dre and legendary music producer Jimmy Iovine, the founders of Beats Electronics, were not named in the lawsuit.
