Spike Lee connects past to urgent present in ‘BlacKkKlansman’

Spike Lee films can be guilty of feeling didactic, but the material suits the message — and the director’s passion — in “BlacKkKlansman,” a fiery, wild true story infused by an overt cautionary warning that the past could be prologue. Tense, provocative and entertaining, it’s not clear how well the movie will age, but Lee’s latest joint feels tailor-made for the current moment.

This is the third film based on Tom Clancy's high-tech espionage potboilers starring CIA deputy director Jack Ryan. Harrison Ford, returning to the Ryan role after his first go-round in 1992's Patriot Games, is assigned to a delicate anti-drug investigation after a close friend of the President (a Reaganesque Donald Moffat) is murdered by a Colombian drug cartel. When Ryan discovers that the President's wealthy friend was in league with the cartel, the President's devious national security adviser (Harris Yulin) and an ambitious CIA deputy director (Henry Czerny) send a secret paramilitary force into Colombia to wipe out the drug lords. The force is captured and then abandoned by the President's lackeys. It falls to Ryan to enter Colombia and rescue them, aided only by a renegade operative named Clark (Willem Dafoe), with both his life and career on the line.

EXCLUSIVE: Maison Margiela to Present First Men’s Collection Under John Galliano

MAN UP: With Paris Men’s Fashion Week set to kick off Tuesday, management at Maison Margiela has confirmed that the house on Friday will present the first men’s collection entirely created and developed under the direction of John Galliano.
The show will take place in the Salle Turenne of the Musée de l’Armée in the Hôtel des Invalides, a complex of buildings in the city’s 7th arrondissement containing museums and monuments relating to the military history of France.
Since joining the OTB-owned house in October 2014, Galliano has had no official involvement in the men’s collection, according to Riccardo Bellini, the house’s chief executive officer. It’s been a step-by-step process for the designer.
“Creating a new aesthetic language rooted in the maison’s couture spirit has always been at the core of Mr. Galliano’s creative vision for the future of the house. Rather than curating the past we have chosen to look at the future and John Galliano’s vision represents a forward-thinking view on the maison and its DNA,” he said. “This collection will offer an elevated and powerful new foundation for men’s wear, strongly positioned within the luxury arena.”
For men’s, the brand counts about 60 direct stores and around 400 multibrand and department stores worldwide.

First Lady Melania Trump to Present Inaugural Gown to Smithsonian

HISTORY LESSONS: Hervé Pierre will be on hand Friday morning when First Lady Melania Trump presents the inaugural gown he designed for her to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.
“She asked me if I wanted to be her date, and I said, ‘Oh hell, yes,’” Pierre said with a laugh. “As a foreigner who became an American, to have your gown put in the Smithsonian Museum is a big huge honor. I got chills. I know how in the designer world, there are lots of big egos. I have always tried to manage my ego for many, many years. But in this case, there is nothing to be ashamed of — it’s a big ego thing. I’m really really proud of it.”
David Skorton, secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, and John Gray, director of the National Museum of American History, will help welcome 200 guests at the private unveiling in Flag Hall of the vanilla silk crepe off-the-shoulder gown with a slit skirt and ruffled accent trim from neckline to hem. Pierre said, “When you are on Earth, it is important to leave a little mark. My name will be in the museum forever. I’m not a painter. That will

10 Reasons Why You Need To Experience Afropunk Fest: Present By The Odd Side

One year ago, we took a trip through New York City to cover Afropunk Fest. The music festival, located at the Barry Commodore Park in Brooklyn, was something very unique compared to the several festivals we have covered. Armed with innovative street style, the love of music and open minds, concert-goers were able to come together and show a completely different side of culture for Blacks in this country. Along with an ever-growing yearly line-up that features superstars that represent it’s culture, the experience itself makes Afropunk a gem in NYC. One year later, the festival is expanding internationally. There was an inaugural festival in Paris as well as another that will happen in Atlanta on October 3rd.

There are several reasons why Afropunk is a one of coolest festivals during the summer, and we’re here to give you some dope reasons why you need to experience this weekend. Here are 10 reasons why you need to experience Afropunk Fest:

1. Afropunk’s yearly lineups are unique to it’s culture

Every year, Afropunk has supplied a lineup featuring artists that help empower the culture. From Danny Brown to Bad Brains, the festival always showcase a diverse group of music artists with similar attributes. There’s only one place you will find D’Angelo, Shabbazz Palaces, and HO9909 all in one place. This year, the lineup is far more stacked, including artists Lauryn Hill, Kaytranada, Kelis, Goldlink, and a hell of a lot more.tumblr_inline_nr4keegpzB1r1sixa_500

2. There’s some really good Hip Hop acts.

They might not be superstars like Rick Ross or Drake, but several rappers that come to Afropunk are great additions to the festival. Don’t think these are your normal rap acts either, you end up hearing diverse sounds and seeing some beautifully insane moments here. Afropunk is the type of place where many have seen hip hop performances ranging from Jean Grae to Das Racist. It is also the type of place where you see moments like this happen:

Afropunk

3.  The DJ’s are sick!

Along with a diverse lineup of artists comes a diverse list of DJs at Afropunk. The Gold Stage is where most of these destructive disk jockeys kill the turntables. From Samba, to Reggae, to Trap music, your ears will explore new terrains and will get you moving along with the other hundreds of people grooving. There’s nothing like a group of people getting more energized throughout one DJ’s set, no matter what genre of music it is. Once you get done with a sick performance, this is the place to be for breaks.

Clip from A-Ra

4. There are some legendary acts there

As said before, Afropunk brings in legendary musicians that help fire the culture. Every year there seems to be a incredibly extraordinary artist headlining the festival. Last year it was D’Angelo, the year before it was Chuck D and Questlove, the list goes on. The bigger this fest gets, the more innovative the headliners are. Really! Who would expect Grace Jones and Lenny Kravitz to have performances this year?

D' Angelo and the Vanguard at Afropunk 2014

5. There’s nothing but love here.

One major thing about this festival is that there are no barriers between festival goers. One of the most important things about Afropunk is that there is no type of hate promote on the grounds. They even have a couple banners to prove it. That means no homophobia, racism, “fatphobia”, you name it. None of that is allowed here, and it keeps the interactions fans positive.  You might just make a couple of friends in a mosh pit made to some band you never heard of.

6. Soulection will make an appearance this year (Lakim x Goldlink)

One of fastest growing music collectives online happens to be Soulection. From Sango to Esta, there’s a long list of artists that have contributed to bring an all new sound to modern music. Although Soulection won’t be as deep as they normally are in NYC, Lakim and Goldlink will be killing different stages for the squad. We’ve already encountered both artists in DC last month, so we already have high expectations for these two performances.

7. Don’t sleep on the rock bands

There might be some dope hip hop artists at this festival, but don’t shy away from the bands that perform there either. They provide some of the most energetic performances at Afropunk. There are some really good acts that come here every year too, like TV on the Radio or Bad Brains. The rock bands are truly one of the factors that make the festival full of life.

8. The street style here is dope

Looking at people’s clothes may not be the amped reason to go to Afropunk, but it definitely is a nice addition to the experience. The urban terrain gives several fans the opportunity to show out during the weekend. You might not find this many people with unique outfits in one place until next year. We anticipate it being even more cooler this year. There have been several publications that have mentioned Afropunk about the diverse street style alone.

9. Afropunk showcases a ton of art.

Along with the music, street style, and DJ’ing, Afropunk also showcases some dope art. Most of it is located at one spot on festival grounds, but you still come across some extremely dope images while you travel from stage to stage.

AfroPunk Fest 2014

10. Afropunk tries to take on social issues

Many people may be familiar with Afropunk because of its musical acts, innovative street style from festival goers, and the culture. However, this festival tries to also promote the importance giving festival goers knowledge about modern issues in our society. You’ll find a ton of different booths at Activism Row in the entrance of Barry Commodore Park. Not many festivals attempt to inspire people to actually stay informed about what problems are going on outside of them.

We will be at Afropunk once again this year to cover some the festivities. Keep it locked at AllHipHop for performances, street style, interviews, and much more.

News: Climate Change Deniers Present Graphic Description Of What Earth Must Look Like For Them To Believe

WASHINGTON—Evoking cataclysmic scenes of extreme weather and widespread drought and famine, the nation’s climate change deniers held a press conference Wednesday to describe exactly what the Earth must look like before they will begin to believe in human-induced global warming.

The group of skeptics, who said that the consensus among 97 percent of the scientific community and the documented environmental transformations already underway are simply not proof enough, laid out the precise sequence and magnitude of horrific events—including natural disasters, proliferation of infectious diseases, and resource wars—they would have to witness firsthand before they are swayed.

“For us to accept that the average surface temperature of the Earth has risen to critical levels due to mankind’s production of greenhouse gases, we’ll need to see some actual, visible evidence, including a global death toll of no less than 500 million people within a single calendar …

How Highly Gendered Toys Present an Exclusively Heterosexual Worldview to Children

When I was a child, these are some of the things I saw in daily life:

• Books, movies and TV shows about husbands and wives, boyfriends
and girlfriends

• Paintings of male/female couples

• Wedding books, photo albums, gowns, bride-and-groom cake
toppers and other wedding-related items

• Men and women walking down the street holding hands

• Math worksheets with word problems about Susie’s mommy
and Susie’s daddy

• Barbie and Ken

The list goes on forever.

Today’s children are more likely to see two men or two women holding hands, more likely to have a friend or relative who is openly gay and more likely to have a schoolmate who has two moms or two dads. But when girls and boys walk into a toy store in 2015, they see a significantly more gendered, heteronormative arrangement and selection of toys than I did as a girl forty years ago! Toys, grouped by gender, are prescriptive of gender roles. It is not only a problem of limiting the ways to be a girl or a boy, as I have written about extensively. It is also a problem of promoting an exclusively heterosexual worldview.

In the boy aisle are the toys that show boys they will become men and husbands who work outside the home at a variety of exciting jobs, make important discoveries, run/jump/play and impact the environment (by fighting, building, solving problems and mysteries and using superpowers to save the world).

Girls learn the yin to the boys’ yang. They see a toy aisle that tells them they will become women and wives who work inside the home, who spend a lot of time cultivating their physical appearance, who focus on attracting males, who are physically sedentary and passive, and who raise babies, cook and clean.

The two aisles can be taken together to represent the heterosexual couple — the bride and groom, but in a decidedly archaic depiction of marriage. Obviously, this message is not a healthy one for raising strong, empowered girls or sensitive, nurturing boys, but it is also unhealthy for any child who is gender-nonconforming or who will not grow up to fulfill traditional heterosexual gender roles.

For the child who does not like the trappings that the world rigidly assigns to his or her gender, or who knows somewhere deep inside that he or she does not fit into the world of play that is presented as all there is, there is discomfort. There is confusion. And often, there is compliance and a very private, perhaps entirely secret thought process that goes something like this: I am not like other girls. I am a girl, but I like the things in the boy aisle. But I can’t go over there, or I could get teased. People will think I’m weird if I like to play with boy toys. Kids might bully me if they know I do not want to be a princess or a bride when I grow up. What I really want is to be a firefighter. But I can’t, and I can’t tell anyone.

A boy who wants to play with dolls will experience similar cognitive dissonance at the toy store. Why? Is pretending to care for a baby not a way of practicing parenthood? For some reason we encourage that behavior in girls, but not in boys. And then we talk about wanting men to be more nurturing fathers to their children. For many parents and other adults in the lives of boys who are not traditionally masculine in their interests and behavior, there is real fear. Fear that this boy might be gay. Disgust that this boy is like a girl, because being feminine is considered a negative trait for boys growing up in a patriarchal society. There really is nothing worse boys can be called than like a girl. As a woman, that offends me!

For these children, profound feelings of isolation and loneliness can be commonplace. This problem can be solved quickly and easily if we as a society so choose. It has already begun to be solved in Europe. There are toy stores across the pond that no longer separate toy aisles by gender. Instead, toys are grouped by type: you have the building toys here, the dress-up costumes there and the arts & crafts kits around the corner. There are no gendered labels. No gendered signage. No downsides! Boys and girls walk through these stores and go to the sections that interest them. What could be simpler? What could be healthier? When will America follow suit? Most importantly, what’s a good reason not to do this? Seriously. How will it hurt you or your child? Inquiring minds want to know.

I hope the thinking changes, for the sake of all children, especially those who do not fit the mold we have artificially constructed for them, and who are often bullied for it. Words like “tomboy” and “sissy” have been used for generations as labels for gender transgression, which is when a girl “acts like a boy” or a boy “acts like a girl.”

I hate these labels. I use them here because I have no other nonacademic, mainstream vocabulary readers could relate to, and because I believe that beginning to see these words negatively is a good thing. These words are not only descriptive but also prescriptive. They say to a child, “that toy is not for you” or “that activity is not for you.” These words are not just limiting, but shaming. Telling a child that his or her natural joy in something that is otherwise safe, fun and stimulating is “for” the opposite gender is essentially saying, “Get back in line.”

I say, take away that line. Let kids choose. What are we so afraid of? If we are fine with choice, it is time to show the toy manufacturers and marketers that their financial profiteering off the gendering of our children’s toys (so they can make twice as much money selling “separate but unequal” products for boys and girls) is over. This means the labeling and signage must go away. There can be pink vacuum cleaners and princess gowns. There can be super heroes and science kits. All that needs to stop is the messaging about what is for whom. The world is full of all kinds of girls and all kinds of boys and a spectrum of sexual orientations and gender identities. We don’t have packages and signs stereotyping toys as being “for white children” or “for children of color”–I mean, can you imagine?

So if we wouldn’t segregate toys racially, let’s stop socializing children from birth to accept stereotypes in terms of gender roles and heteronormativity. Let’s open it up for them and see what blossoms.

Gigi Hadid’s Birthday Present From Cody Simpson Proves They’re A Couple With Compassion

When it comes to her birthday, Gigi Hadid is all about giving, not getting.

The model, who will turn 20 on April 23, asked for gift cards from McDonald’s and other restaurants for her birthday. Instead of using them on late-night McFlurry runs, Gigi plans on giving them to people she sees on the street who might need help getting their next meal. Who was the first person to help her spread the love? None other than her singer boyfriend, Cody Simpson.

If your birthday is comin up and you don’t know what to ask for!!!!!!

Chromeo's 'White Women': The Funky Synchronicity Of Music's Past And Present

Chromeo's 'White Women': The Funky Synchronicity Of Music's Past And PresentThis is Chromeo's time. The musical team of David Macklovitch and Patrick Gemayel, aka Dave 1 and P-Thugg, released their newest album, "White Women," on May 12. It is instantly catchy, irresistibly funky and undeniably danceable. It incorporates a hefty portion of the past, but it couldn't possibly sound more like the present. It's also, by the way, excellent. For Macklovitch, who spoke with HuffPost about the group's latest release, the album is the celebration of a long union. "Chromeo's been around for 10 years now, and it's a big commitment to each other, and not only to each other
