Preview Virgil Abloh’s New Take on Couture for Spring ’16

virgil abhol

“For me, Off-White is a diary,” says Virgil Abloh. Judging by the response Kanye West’s right-hand creative has had since launching the label back in late 2013, it’s a journal that a lot of people are keen to open up. Tomorrow Abloh will present the brand’s third women’s collection at the Galerie Joseph on Rue de Turenne, a lineup stemming from a simple, even stark, jumping-off point: the white T-shirt and jeans.

Photo: Courtesy of Off-White

For Spring ’16 (dubbed Off-Day), Abloh has tapped into fashionable women’s newfound affinity for dressing down. Gone are the days of Going-Out Tops; sneakers are a staple of the industry’s most boldface front rows. And so the designer came to re-examine the iconic combo, embracing tees—a garment that served as one of Abloh’s earliest forays into fashion with his popular Pyrex Vision styles—and denim. This summer he headed out to San Francisco and plumbed the depths of Levi’s 150-plus-year archive; for Spring he’s collaborated with the heritage brand on retooled vintage pieces, patchworking “pure denim that hasn’t been indigo-dyed, with jeans that have been worn.” Other elevations of the workwear staple will include a denim evening gown, while your basic Hanes shirt will find new life in pieces created in collaboration with New York City artist (and Alldayeveryday art director) Othelo Gervacio. The pair borrowed elements from the rich visual vocabulary of the Grateful Dead, repainted by Gervacio onto garments, ripped to shreds, and tied back together.

As Abloh tells Vogue.com, “I’m 35, I like nice things, I like special things, and I think the old way of couture has a different relation to culture. For me, a pair of jeans that are custom-made with a person in mind, that have all these details—and as a designer I can go down the rabbit hole and create something special—that’s the spirit that I’m trying to unveil in Off-White.”

Check back tomorrow for complete Off-White Spring 2016 collection photos.

Berlin Fashion Week Preview: Mix It Up

A climate of change appears to be developing in Europe’s largest, strongest, but also most stubbornly set fashion market: Germany.
When Berlin Fashion Week takes off July 7 to 10, the city will be hosting more than a dozen trade fairs and platforms, plus about 50 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin runway shows and presentations. Representing almost every conceivable orientation and apparel category — mainstream to niche designers, streetwear to alpine folkloric, high-tech to green, large sizes to kids — Berlin’s ever-expanding offerings have sometimes been criticized as a disconnect in a retail environment where safety and sameness reigns.
Despite a healthy overall consumer climate, German apparel retail sales continue to lag. Average sales for 2015 to date are down 2 to 3 percent compared with the same period last year, “and things weren’t so great then, either,” noted Jürgen Dax, director of the German Apparel Retailers Association. “Many customers simply aren’t coming into the stores. Everything is always available via the Internet, and other leisure activities seem to be more attractive [than shopping].”
Yet Dax noted German retailers are shifting from the defensive to the offensive to consider what they can do to make their stores more interesting, noteworthy and appealing. He predicted

Popcorn Preview: Effie Gray

Effie Gray (2014)
Cast includes: Dakota Fanning (I Am Sam), Emma Thompson (Love Actually), Derek Jacobi (The King’s Speech), Russel Tovey (The History Boys), Julie Walters (Harry Potter series), Tom Sturridge (Pirate Radio), James Fox (Sherlock Holmes), Greg Wise (Sense and Sensibility), David Suchet (Poirot)
Writer: Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility)
Director: Richard Laxton (An Englishman in New York)
Genre: Drama | History (108 minutes)

“Once a beautiful young girl lived in a very cold house in Scotland.” When a young man came to visit, “he wrote a fairy story just for her. She was 12. Then when she grew up, she married the rich and famous man, leaving dreary old Scotland behind.” Effie is now 18 and she promises her sister Sophie that she can come visit her in London. In the carriage with her new husband, Effie realizes it’s “the first time we’ve ever been entirely alone.” Looking at Effie’s beautiful face, John Ruskin feels everything is “perfect.” The streets of London are teaming with life, but the Ruskin home, Denmark Hill, isn’t actually in London… it’s really a country estate. As soon as the newlyweds arrive, John’s mother whisks him off to the bath and Effie gets a tour of all the home’s new acquisitions… the ones John’s father believes are worth the most money. “You’ll never want for money,” he tells Effie. In the bedchamber later that evening, Effie is a little unsure what she’s supposed to do. For that matter, John seems unsure, too. When she lets her nightgown fall to the ground, he walks away.

“What do married people do?” she asks the next morning. “I must work,” he answers. Effie soon learns that Denmark Hill is as cold as her family home in Scotland… but it isn’t the temperature. It’s the Ruskins. “You have married no ordinary man,” John’s mother tells her. “The only way you can help him is to leave him alone.” John is an author of everything from social comment to art criticism. Because of John, the young artist, Everett Millais has a show at the Academy. That’s where Effie meets Lady Eastlake… who is so taken with Effie that she insists on an invitation to dinner. Although the Ruskins contend that nothing is wrong, Lady Eastlake can see that there is. “She means to poison me,” Effie says when the housekeeper insists she take the “medicine” Mrs. Ruskin gives her. Thankfully, the young couple will be spending some time in Venice, while John works on his next book about the decay of Venice.

Based on actual events, John and Effie were married in 1848… the height of the Victorian era. The details of their marriage would have been soap opera worthy had they happened in the 20th century, but in Victorian England, a woman had very little recourse if her marriage wasn’t a happy one. In depicting the events of John and Effie’s marriage, the movie is quite reserved and beautifully nuanced. Many of the filmmakers come from Merchant Ivory Productions, and Effie Gray is very much in that tradition. It’s hard to know with certainty what went on in the marriage, but there are letters and written accounts that served as source material. Even John’s friend Everett cringes when John says about Effie, “Women should learn to depend on themselves, rather than constantly craving companionship.” Effie hopes that spending time in Venice will bring her husband closer, but he is quite disagreeable… “Once she was a virgin; now she’s a harlot.” Is he talking about Venice or Effie?

Popcorn Preview: Woman in Gold

Woman in Gold (2015)
Cast includes: Helen Mirren (The Queen), Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern), Charles Dance (The Imitation Game), Daniel Brühl (Inglorious Basterds), Katie Holmes (Batman Begins)
Director: Simon Curtis (My Week with Marilyn)
Genre: Drama | History (109 minutes) Parts in German with subtitles

As the film opens, we see the restless Adele Bloch-Bauer sitting for a portrait by Gustav Klimt. Who would have guessed that a family portrait would become the center of an Austrian identity crisis? Especially a portrait of a Jewish woman. In 1998, Maria Altmann’s sister Louisa is laid to rest. As Maria leaves the cemetery with her friend Barbara, she asks about Barbara’s son, the struggling lawyer. “I found some letters in my sister’s belongings, and I need someone I can trust to look them over.” The timing isn’t good because Randy Schoenberg may not be struggling for long. He has an interview at Bergen Brown Sherman. Although Mr. Sherman isn’t so impressed with Randy’s Pasadena experience, Sherman must be a music lover. “Are you any relations to Arnold Schoenberg?” “My grandfather,” says Randy. “Well, let’s give it a go, Mr. Schoenberg.”

“You look tired and stressed,” says Maria when Randy gets to her bungalow. “But you’re not so bad looking,” she adds and invites her friend’s son in for homemade strudel. On the mantel is a photo of the Bloch-Bauer family in their Vienna home. There are the sisters and their parents, along with their aunt and uncle, who lived with them. Aunt Adele had no children, so she doted on the two girls like a second mother. But Maria didn’t ask Randy over to look at the photo. She has letters about Aunt Adele’s painting, which “was taken off our walls in Vienna.” “And you want to be reunited?” “Wouldn’t that be lovely!” The first meeting with Randy seems like a waste of time, but he takes the letters to read anyway. Later over lunch, we learn that Maria could have a case, but Randy doesn’t think the case is for him. Anyway, why is Maria so insistent? “We have the same history.” Indeed Randy’s grandfather Arnold was in the Bloch-Bauer home many times. But it isn’t family ties that win Randy over… it’s the estimated value of the painting.

Randy’s firm gives him a week to spend on the case, and he convinces Maria to come back to Vienna with him. It’s an emotional week and memories of her youth are flooding back at every turn. As the film alternates between the modern day case and the events of the 1930s, we get a deeper understanding of why restitution is so important. Although the Austrian government has been pushed into greater transparency, there’s little chance of getting back a painting that has become part of the Austrian identity… although the name of Adele’s painting has been changed to erase her Jewishness… she’s now just the “Woman in Gold.” “She is the Mona Lisa of Austria. Do you think they will just let her go?” The case goes through many twists and turns. Is it going to “open a whole can of worms… or is it just about restoration of a single worm?” The filmmakers do an excellent job of engaging us in the story, even though many of the plot elements have been altered considerably from actual events. (There’s actually enough interesting material for a miniseries… “Wouldn’t that be lovely!”) While there are many excellent performances, Helen Mirren stands out as the prickly and complicated Maria. There are many moments when they felt like giving up. But Maria is learning to “face the ghosts” and to stand up to those who tell her, “You people never give up.”

Popcorn Preview: Dial a Prayer

Dial a Prayer (2015)
Cast includes: Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect), William H. Macy (Shameless), Tom Lipinski (Labor Day), Glenne Headly (Don Jon), Aral Gribble (Loading Zone)
Writer/Director: Maggie Kiley (Brightest Star)
Genre: Comedy | Drama (97 minutes)

With “Lead Me Gently Home” playing on the sound track, we hear a mellow voice saying, “With God, all things are possible.” We realize we’re looking at a phone bank with about a dozen mellow-voiced counselors talking to callers. On the other hand… “Dial A Prayer. How may I pray for you?” says Cora… without a molecule of conviction. As we soon learn, it’s Cora’s first day, and frankly, she need a lot of training. “Daily Devotional is offering a free trial.” “It’s another record week at Dial A Prayer,” supervisor Bill announces over iced lemon cake. Yum! “The work you do redeems you with the Lord. You’re serving the master… God, not me!” Oh, Bill’s such a joker at times! Dial A Prayer is going to be extra busy with all the holiday needs coming up. But Bill knows they’ll be up to the challenge. What he really wants to know about is Cora’s serve. Serve? “Volleyball. If you can answer the call, you’d better join the league.”

At 4:00 sharp, Cora is out the door… but not so fast. Bill catches up and gives her the company T-shirt. Cora is creeped out by the whole place. Days later when sneaking out back for a cig break, she encounters a young man who’s been looking for her. “You’re the one I spoke to. I’m Chase…” as if Cora is supposed to remember everyone she prays for. Apparently, Cora helped him find his way. However, it’s obviously Cora who needs navigation, because she’s just going through the motions. In flashbacks, we begin to see that Cora isn’t working at Dial A Prayer by choice. She’s doing time for that church vandalism incident that went terribly wrong. “We’re allowing you to repent.” How long is she going to have to work with “those freaks?” she wonders. “Don’t think you can just go through the motions and get away with it,” Bill warns her. After some soul searching, Cora decides to put some effort into her job. “Everyday is a new beginning.”

Dial a Prayer is the second feature film by writer/director, Maggie Kiley. It’s an enjoyable hour and a half; even though Cora, the central character, seems to mope through life… always as dreary as the interminable Michigan winter. Although the film feels highly independent, the script was good enough to bring in actor William H. Macy, who does an excellent job as Bill, the sometimes unnaturally chipper supervisor. Obviously, the world of a prayer phone bank provides abundant opportunity for either cynicism or sermonizing, but the film avoids both… which could be a disappointment for audiences who are hoping for either of those points of view. As the plot thickens, we see that Cora existence in this world touches others, even though she seems to feel nothing she does matters. “Nothing is impossible with God,” says Bill. “Maybe believing it’s working is enough.” The script capitalizes on virtually every religious slogan there is, but perhaps a woman who doesn’t work at Dial A Prayer sums it up best… “It’s ok. I’m ok. It’s all ok.”

Popcorn Preview: Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter

Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter (2014)
Cast includes: Rinko Kikuchi (Pacific Rim), Nobuyuki Datsube (Oboreru Sakana), David Zellner (Kid Thing)
Director: David and Nathan Zellner (Kid Thing)
Genre: Humor | Drama (105 minutes)

We first encounter Kumiko as she walks along the water’s edge wearing her oversized red hoodie and carrying a piece of white cloth. Her footprints follow the line of the serf. To her left are the high rock outcroppings that also follow the shape of the shoreline. When she gets to a particular spot, she compares the rock shapes to the embroidered image on the cloth. They match exactly, and Kumiko finds the entrance to a cave. Just inside, there’s a large rock, which she moves to one side, revealing treasure. It’s an old, dirty and damp VCR tape. (It’s the one that played at the beginning of the movie… so badly damaged that we thought the projection equipment needed fixing.) Back home, we see that Kumiko is not nearly as committed to housekeeping as she is to her treasure hunting. She feeds her bunny Bunzo by emptying the last crumbs of his bag of food right on top of his cage. That VCR is going to have to dry out before she can play it.

Monday morning, Kumiko heads off to work in downtown Tokyo. She’s one of an army of eager, polite and chipper young Office Ladies who put on their OL uniforms and serve their managers… doing chores like making tea and taking suits to the cleaners. This isn’t Kumiko’s destiny, is it? Back home, Kumiko and Bunzo share a cup of Ramen noodles, as they watch the tape. It’s Fargo, and Kumiko seems to be primarily interested in one scene… it’s the one when the William H. Macy character buries treasure in the snow and marks the spot with a red plastic scraper. Damn! It’s the phone… “It’s your mother. I haven’t heard from you in a long time…” Eventually she gets around to what’s on her mind. “Are you getting that promotion?” Kumiko says yes. [She lies.] “Are you dating?” “No.” Mom’s not happy with Kumiko’s progress toward her ultimate destiny… finding a boyfriend and getting married. Nor is Kumiko’s boss, who feels free to give her advice on how to live her life. Kumiko is 29, after all and she really should have been married by age 26. When her boss hires another OL to help Kumiko, the handwriting is on the wall. Ms. Kanazaki is the new OL and Kumiko’s days are numbered.

Anyway, the options of being either an OL or a wife aren’t Kumiko’s destiny. She’s a treasure hunter, after all. And she’s just uncovered the best clue of all. A little proactive planning… bye-bye Bunzo… plus a bit of unexpected good luck gives Kumiko what she needs to fulfill her destiny. That scene from Fargo is the focal point of Kumiko’s hunt. Speaking almost no English, Kumiko not only gets herself to Fargo but somehow manages to enlist the help of total strangers. At a certain point, we begin to wonder what we are watching. Is it the fulfillment of an improbable fate? Or is she living out the end days of a tragically out-of-touch individual. While she’s in Japan, her actions seem cute, albeit rather bizarre. In America, Kumiko seems more bizarre than cute. Rinko Kikuchi as Kumiko walks a fine line between reality and fantasy… sanity and insanity. “You take me to Fargo?” she asks everyone. “I’ll take you to the Mall of America. It’s a lot more fun.”

Popcorn Preview: Merchants of Doubt

Merchants of Doubt (2014)
Writer/Director: Robert Kenner (Food, Inc.)
Genre: Documentary (96 minutes)

At first we wonder if we’re in the right movie. Magician Jamy Ian Swiss puts on his signature red shirt, suit and tie for a performance at the Magic Castle. “My occupation is deception,” he says. “I make an honest living.” He explains that his audience expects to be fooled. “I take offense when people use tricks to fool the public and block needed change.” For example… tobacco… in 1978, scientist Stanton Glantz put forth the outrageous notion that indoor spaces needed non-smoking areas. “Bullshit,” was the cry. “It’s not about science. It’s about politics!” The focus soon changed from science to the scientists. “People would think we were paranoid delusional.”

Then one day a large box mysteriously appeared. Someone inside Big Tobacco collected documents dating from 1958 to 1984 and sent them to Glantz anonymously. It turns out there was abundant evidence from tobacco industry scientists, showing that tobacco was “addictive… harmful… a carcinogen…” In 1994, top tobacco industry executive all testified before congress that tobacco wasn’t addictive. Around this time, the industry hired PR firm Hill and Knowlton. “You can’t prove that cigarettes don’t cause cancer. What you can do is cast doubt.” They unleash an army of pseudo-scientists to refute real scientists. Doubt buys time, and time is worth money… 50 years worth, in the case of Big Tobacco.

But it isn’t just tobacco. Acid rain, DDT, global warming, asbestos, ozone, flame retardants… the industries and interest groups are very diverse and the tactics have become very sophisticated. They blame the scientists. They blame socialism and communism. They blame big government, trying to take away our freedom. They do anything and everything to extend the length of time it takes for a public groundswell to force legislative change.

Although the primary concern in Merchants of Doubt is global warming, the film doesn’t focus primarily on environmental issues. It’s really about the dirty tricks that are used to cast doubt. Just when you think there is nothing more they can do to hijack important issues, the film shows us yet another… and another. It actually becomes painful to watch! By the time there’s a groundswell demanding action on the environment, it’ll be too late… if it isn’t already. The magician shows us one of his standard tricks and how he uses sleight of hand to fool us. “Once revealed. Never concealed.” And it’s true… After he shows us how it’s done, we see it every time. The filmmakers hope to reveal how merchants of doubt fool us, and they hope we’ll stop being fooled by the dirty tricks. “The earth is getting warmer — no question about it.”

Popcorn Preview: American Sniper

American Sniper (2014)
Cast includes: Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook), Sienna Miller (Foxcatcher), Kyle Gallner (A Nightmare on Elm Street)
Director: Clint Eastwood (Unforgiven)
Writer: Jason Hall (Paranoia) Based on the book by Chris Kyle, Scott McEwen and James Defelice
Genre: Action | Biography | Drama (132 minutes)

The sounds are a mix of the call to prayer and tank movement. The scene looks like a post-war dystopia. It’s Fallujah and this is Chris Kyle’s first tour of duty. He’s on a rooftop calling in the sighting of a man with a cell phone. He looks like he’s reporting troop movements. Chris gets the green light, but the man disappears. A woman and a kid come out of the house. She’s definitely carrying something. It’s a grenade, and she gives it to the kid. “Green light. Your call.” In a flashback, we see Chris back in Texas with his father. They’re deer hunting and Chris takes a perfect shot the very first time. “A fine shot. You’ve got a hell of a gift,” says Dad. Both Kyle boys are taught Kyle family values, like the difference between a sheep, wolf and a sheepdog. Sheep are weak. Wolves are aggressors. Sheepdogs are the ones who protect others from the wolves… a lesson Chris takes to heart from a young age. Chris and his brother want to be cowboys and they spend most weekends on the rodeo circuit. But when they watch the 1998 attack of the US Embassy in Dar Es Salaam on TV, Chris knows as a sheepdog, he needs to fight for his country.

At the recruiting office, they give him a brochure for the Seals… and we soon see Chris in basic training. “We’re looking for warriors, not quitters.” Training is brutal but Chris makes it to sniper school, where his “hell of a gift” sets him apart. At the local bar, Chris’s demeanor sets him apart, too. “I’m not a redneck. I’m from Texas,” Chris says when Taya tries to give him the brush off. Persistence pays off and Chris and Taya are married just months after 9/11 and right before Chris’s Seal Team ships out. Back in Fallujah, Chris’s laser focus and excellent aim get him noticed. His friend Biggles dubs him “The Legend” and the name sticks. But whatever he manages to do, he still thinks he should be doing more… for example, helping the marines on the ground. “We need you on over watch,” his commander tells him. “All these guys… They know your name. They think they’re invincible because of you.”

American Sniper is the story of Chris Kyle, a real life war hero, who served 4 tours of duty in Iraq… “The deadliest sniper in US military history.” It’s a remarkable movie… part macho adrenalin rush, part character study and part psychological drama. It will definitely be too violent for many moviegoers, which is a shame because it’s so well done. It’s a very gritty film… without obvious computer-enhanced pyrotechnics. A very beefed-up Bradley Coopers is phenomenal as Chris Kyle… part patriotic warrior, part no-nonsense skilled sniper, part family man and part psychological shut-in. “Even when you’re here you’re not here,” Taya tells him. Chris’s family means everything to him and he wants to be there for them, but each deployment makes him even more of a military killing machine. Before long, he has a bounty of $ 180,000 on his head, and the infamous jihadi sniper “The Butcher” is determined to collect. The filmmakers have taken some liberties with the Chris Kyle autobiography, but they’ve certainly captured the sheer hell of it. “This is evil like I’ve never seen before.”
