The Stanford Prison Experiment

Kyle Patrick Alvarez

Genre: Thriller

Price: $ 14.99

Rental Price: $ 3.99

Release Date: July 17, 2015

What happens when a college psych study goes shockingly wrong? In this tense, psychological thriller based on the notorious true story, Billy Crudup stars as Stanford University professor Dr. Philip Zimbardo, who, in 1971, cast 24 student volunteers as prisoners and guards in a simulated jail to examine the source of abusive behavior in the prison system. The results astonished the world, as participants went from middle-class undergrads to drunk-with-power sadists and submissive victims in just a few days. Winner of two awards at the Sundance Film Festival, including Best Screenplay, and created with the close participation of Dr. Zimbardo himself, 'The Stanford Prison Experiment' is a chilling, edge-of-your-seat thriller about the dark side of power and the effects of imprisonment. Featuring an extraordinary cast of rising young actors, including Ezra Miller, Olivia Thirlby, Tye Sheridan, Keir Gilchrist, Michael Angarano, and Thomas Mann.

Infographic: How To Reform The Nation’s Prison System

With pressing issues such as overcrowding, overuse of solitary confinement, and the long-term incarceration of nonviolent offenders, many critics of the nation’s prison system are calling for sweeping reforms. Here are some of the proposals to improve the prison system:

  • Create thousands of productive jobs for inmates constructing more prisons
  • Use solitary confinement only in cases of severe guard anger
  • Slightly shorter prison sentences for those who were wrongfully convicted
  • Take preventative measures by working with kids to convince them not to grow up in areas with disproportionately high incarceration levels
  • Some more dogs to read to or train or whatever
  • Ease the emotional strain caused by inmates’ separation from their families by imprisoning their loved ones with them
  • Increase length of a life sentence to 150 years to really deter potential criminals
  • Avoid whole prison reform headache by solving nation’s education, mental health, drug problems instead

The madman who killed twelve people and injured 70 others during the July 20, 2012 premiere of The Dark Knight Rises, attempted to plead insanity for his gun crazy actions but was still held accountable for first-degree murder on July 17 of this year.

After nearly a month-long of deliberation, the verdict has come down and unlike Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokar Tsarnaev, the jury has decided to spare Holmes his life and sentence him to life in prison.

Reports the Associated Press:

It took jurors only about 12 hours of deliberations to decide the first part — they rejected his insanity defense and found him guilty of 165 felony counts.

The defense then conceded his guilt, but insisted during the sentencing phase that his crimes were caused by the psychotic breakdown of a mentally ill young man, reducing his moral culpability and making a life sentence appropriate.

The jury’s final decision came after days of tearful testimony from relatives of the slain.

The case could have ended the same way more than two years ago, when Holmes offered to plead guilty if he could avoid the death penalty. Prosecutors rejected the offer. But the victims and the public might not have ever learned in detail what was behind the shootings had the plea deal been accepted.

The trial — featuring a journal where Holmes had secretly described his murderous plans — provided a rare look inside the mind of a mass shooter. Most are killed by police, kill themselves or plead guilty. By pleading insanity, he dropped his privacy rights and agreed to be examined by court-ordered psychiatrists. Holmes told one that he had been secretly obsessed with thoughts of killing since he was 10.

His parents testified that he seemed a normal, affectionate child who withdrew socially in adolescence and became fascinated with science but did not seem abnormal. Holmes studied neuroscience hoping to understand what was happening to his mind. But it was when he moved from San Diego to Colorado to attend graduate school that his meltdown accelerated.

Let’s just hope they make it hell on earth for him and he lives until he’s 89-years-old.

Silk Road Founder Sentenced To Life In Prison

If you were aware of the black market website, Silk Road, during its heyday at the top of the decade, then you were already one step closer to committing a felony. The online marketplace for heavy drugs such as heroin, cocaine and ecstasy amassed millions in revenue before being shut down in the November 2014.

Now, Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht has to answer for the multiple crimes, including at least one victim overdosing from the drugs being purchased, with a life sentence in prison.

Reports the New York Times:

Mr. Ulbricht, 31, was sentenced by the judge, Katherine B. Forrest, for his role as what prosecutors described as “the kingpin of a worldwide digital drug-trafficking enterprise.”

Mr. Ulbricht’s novel high-tech drug bazaar operated in a hidden part of the Internet sometimes known as the dark web, which allowed deals to be made anonymously and out of the reach of law enforcement. In Silk Road’s nearly three years of operation, over 1.5 million transactions were carried out involving several thousand seller accounts and more than 100,000 buyer accounts, the authorities have said.

Judge Forrest echoed that message. “What you did was unprecedented,” she told Mr. Ulbricht, “and in breaking that ground as the first person,” he had to pay the consequences. Anyone who might consider doing something similar, the judge added, needed to understand clearly “and without equivocation that if you break the law this way, there will be very serious consequences.”

Mr. Ulbricht was convicted in February on charges that included engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise and distributing narcotics on the Internet, each of which carried potential life terms. The government had also alleged that he had solicited the murders of people he saw as threats to his operation, and that at least six deaths were attributable to drugs bought on the site.

At the hearing, the mother of one such victim and the father of another each delivered emotional statements to the judge. The father, identified as Richard, whose 25-year-old son had died after using heroin that prosecutors said was purchased on Silk Road, accused Mr. Ulbricht of being driven by greed in making drugs easily available to vulnerable people.

“I strongly believe that my son would be here today if Ross Ulbricht had not created Silk Road,” he said, adding, “All Ross Ulbricht cared about was his growing pile of bitcoins.”

A tearful Ulbricht expressed remorse for his actions at his sentencing but you know they say hindsight is always 20/20.

Savagery: Cop Shooter Smiles At Judge After Being Sentenced To 110 Years In Prison

On Easter Sunday 2012, Nakwon Foxworth found himself in the center of a hostage situation where he eventually fired–and wounded–four police officers in Brooklyn.

Following his guilty verdict, a judge rejected all his self-defense arguments and sentenced him to a mind-blowing 110 years in prison, to which Foxworth met the revelation with a cheesy grin.

Reports NYDailyNews:

“I’ll be back,” Nakwon Foxworth said in Brooklyn Supreme Court after apologizing to members of his own family “for my absence” since he was arrested in April 2012 — but never uttering a word of condolence to the Emergency Service Unit cops he shot.

Foxworth, 36, was convicted at trial last month by a jury that did not buy his self-defense argument that he opened fire on cops in the Sheepshead Bay apartment where he was barricaded only after, he claimed, they shot at him first.

The incident happened April 8, 2012 — on Easter Sunday — after Foxworth began arguing with moving men over items blocking the building hallway. Foxworth, who had an arsenal in the apartment, briefly held his pregnant girlfriend and infant son while hostage negotiators tried to defuse the situation.

But the key piece of evidence, Assistant District Attorney Kenneth Taub pointed out, were text messages Foxworth sent during the standoff indicating he had no intention of returning to prison.

It should be noted that while a jury easily convicted Foxworth of shooting the officers, the polar opposite couldn’t be accomplished for Cleveland cop Michael Brelo’s shooting, especially when his aftermath looked like this.

Love & Hip Hop New York’s Mendeecees Harris Going To Prison, Has To Forfeit VH1 Checks

Love & Hip Hop New York’s Mendeecees Harris just got out of prison in March of 2014 but it looks like he’s going right back.

The 36-year-old pseudo reality star pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges and he’s looking at some serious time in the bing. And all his hard-earned TV money is going to government resources.

Via D&C

Love & Hip Hop star Harris, 36, pleaded guilty to narcotics conspiracy in front of U.S. District Judge Frank Geraci Jr. It took nearly an hour for Harris to answer all of the questions related to what Geraci called “a rather complicated agreement.”

During the appearance, Harris admitted he was involved in a drug trafficking operation that between 2005 and 2012 shipped cocaine and heroin to the Rochester region.

Under an agreement with federal prosecutors, Harris also turns over money from his television show and paid appearances. He’s paid after every episode airs. That money, which the federal government will keep, has totaled more than $ 103,000, said his attorney Donald Thompson.

Harris, who is free on a $ 600,000 bail package, will face a sentence of 8 to 10 years in federal prison and/or a fine ranging from $ 15,000 to $ 5 million. He will also face four or five years of supervised release, Thompson said.

Harris’ co-defendants Ronald Walker, and Mendeecees Harris’ brother Tyrus Harris, previously pleaded guilty to their roles in the case. Walker is serving 10 years in federal prison.

Geraci agreed to allow Mendeecees Harris to remain free on bail until his sentencing, which is scheduled for Aug. 31 at 3 p.m.

Harris and his fiancée, hip-hop producer Yandy Smith, will be getting married on live television next month on Love & Hip Hop Live: The Wedding. In February, Smith gave birth to the couple’s second child.

Something tells us the show will still go on.

Fela Kuti in an Unpublished Interview Conducted After His Release From Prison

The release of Alex Gibney’s new documentary on the late Nigerian pop star Fela Kuti spurred me to sift through my own personal journalistic archives to find an audiotaped interview I conducted with Fela in 1986.

And here it is, a transcript and audio clip of my mostly unpublished interview with Fela, perhaps the first one-on-one he granted after being released from prison in ’86.

On June 17, 1986, seven weeks after his release from Nigeria’s toughest prison, Fela spoke exclusively with me. And, bravely, he remained defiant against the military regime in Nigeria that had imprisoned him.

As is the case with many interviews that I conducted as a writer for music trade weekly Cash Box, the Q&A remained unpublished (except for a few lines published in the June 21, 1986, issue of that magazine).

Kuti is probably best-known today as the inventor of Afropop, a massively influential musical form that mixed jazz, rock, funk and revolutionary politics.

Fela was also famous for having fought against oppression in Nigeria. In the early ’80s he was imprisoned by his country’s autocratic regime for three years on what appear to have been politically motivated charges.

After he was released from prison in April 1986, he visited New York City, appearing at a Manhattan press conference on June 13, 1986 (my interview was not a part of that conference) before performing for Amnesty International at Giants Stadium in New Jersey on June 15.

Here’s an edited version of the conversation I had with Fela on June 17, 1986. (And here’s a link to audio clips of my conversation with him.)

Paul Iorio: It must be a big change for you to be out of prison now.

Fela Kuti: Yeah, it’s a big change for me. It’s a good change.

Iorio: Did you write a lot of songs in prison?

Fela: No. I just kept my brain blank. I left my mind blank in prison.

Iorio: You were transferred to Kirikiri. Was that, as they say, Nigeria’s toughest prison? And was it tough on you?

Fela: [Kirikiri] is one of the toughest prisons, but it was not tough on me. I lived through it. It was tough on the body. I lived through it….

Iorio: Do you think your spirit is stronger because of this experience?

Fela: Much more stronger.

Iorio:There was a period when you were in the hospital and they transferred you over to Maiduguri prison. At that point nobody heard anything from you for about six weeks. What happened to you?

Fela: They just took me to the prison … and it was very, very uncomfortable, very far away from everybody. And visitors weren’t allowed for me for about five months.

Iorio: Were you afraid for your life?

Fela: No, no, no, I was never afraid for my life…. We just try to face the government….

Iorio: Are you still going to speak out against the Nigerian government? … You’re not going to back down?

Fela: No, I’m not going to back down. I still intend to [protest the government]. I’m not backing down….

Iorio: Would you ever consider getting involved in Nigerian politics … ?

Fela: Yes, definitely.

Iorio: You mentioned that some of the military people have your records and like your music.

Fela: Oh, yes. Everybody in Nigeria likes my records.

Iorio: Do you think Amnesty International had a lot to do with getting you out of prison?

Fela: Not much. They tried to make people aware of it. But there’s not much they could do….

Iorio: While you were in prison, what was the worst thing that happened to you?

Fela: The worst thing that happened to me [while I was in prison] was that my record was produced by somebody else, Bill Laswell. And that really fucked me up in prison.

Iorio: That was “Live in Amsterdam”?

Fela: No, no, “Army Arrangement” … destroyed me completely, fucked my mind up…. When you’re in prison, you can’t do anything about what’s happening outside.

Iorio: But at the same time, people were being carted out dead every day; there were beatings.

Fela: Oh, yes.

Iorio: But it never happened to you?

Fela: No.

Iorio: Was that because everybody knew who you were?

Fela: Yes, exactly.

Iorio: You were more than disappointed with “Army Arrangement.”

Fela: Yes, Bill Laswell’s production. I had a production [before I went] to prison. So they abandoned my production and put in a new one…. They knew that [I’d given] instructions that it not be produced by anyone. They knew how I felt about it.

[I was unable to contact Laswell for comment on this claim. Of course, Laswell is welcome to give his side of the story in the comments section here.]

Iorio: How about “Live in Amsterdam”? Do you harbor any bad feeling that EMI released that instead of releasing “Perambulator”?

Fela: EMI did so many bad things. They didn’t look out for my interest at all…. They just wanted to rush something out…. “Live in Amsterdam” wasn’t a good recording. I only [made] it happen because the system wanted it, because the company complained … and demanded a live album.

[Any executive from that era of EMI is free to rebut Fela’s statements in the comments section.]

Iorio: Is there a Fela record that you consider is your best?

Fela: No, I don’t.

Iorio: Do you think that you could live a better life as a musician if you were to leave Nigeria?

Fela: I could never leave my home…. It inspires me a lot.
