Why Democrats Hear a Secret Racist Dog Whistle and Republicans Don’t

One of the biggest misconceptions about Trump supporters is that they see President Trump the same way his critics see him, and yet they like him anyway. The implication of that belief is that all Trump supporters are racists because they damn-well-know they support a leader who is one. Hardly a day goes by without some stranger on Twitter telling me in ominous tones that I will someday pay dearly for being a racist “apologist.” They assume I see President Trump the same way they see him.

In my book Win Bigly, I describe how the public is watching two movies on one screen. In Movie 1, Trump is a monster with many flaws, racism being at the top of the list. In Movie 2, President Trump ran on a platform of being a Republican who disdains political correctness, and the predictable outcome of that is non-stop accusations of racism. As a public service, I compiled some of the plot differences in the two movies, roughly in the order they happened, so you can compare the two scripts. I won’t try to convince you to switch movies. I’m only making the point that Trump supporters literally don’t see what anti-Trumpers regard as obvious.

Housing Discrimination Scene

Movie 1: In 1973, five years after the Fair Housing Act, Trump’s business settled a claim that it had discriminated against African-American applicants, thus proving he is a racist.

Movie 2: Employees of Trump’s company, whose incomes depended on their job performance, discriminated against African-American applicants in the belief that other potential tenants would be racists and less likely to want to live in a diverse building. Housing discrimination of that type is illegal. The Trump organization settled the suit out of court and took steps to make sure it wouldn’t happen again. There are no facts in evidence of Trump’s inner thoughts from 45 years ago.

Central Park Five Scene

Movie 1: In 1989, Trump paid for a full-page ad in the New York Times calling for the death penalty for five African American men falsely accused of rape, thus proving he is a racist. He has never apologized, thus confirming he is a racist.

Movie 2: in 1989, Trump paid for a full-page ad in the New York times saying it was time to get tough on crime, including perhaps using the death penalty. The ad made one indirect reference to the Central Park incident as an example, at a time the police and prosecutors believed the accused were guilty. The ethnicities of the accused was neither mentioned nor implied in Trump’s ad. The topic was crime. When the accused were later cleared, Trump did not apologize, which is normal for him. He doesn’t apologize for anything.

Birtherism Scene

Movie 1: Prior to running for President, private citizen Trump promoted the conspiracy theory that President Obama might have been born in Africa, thus proving Trump is a racist.

Movie 2: Questioning a rival’s eligibility for office, for any reason, is normal politics. We observe Trump using every available form of persuasion against any critic who gets in his way. For example, during the 2016 Republican primaries he also questioned whether Ted Cruz was a Canadian citizen (he isn’t), and wondered aloud if Cruz’ father might have been involved in the assassination of President Kennedy (he wasn’t). In order to believe Trump was acting racist in questioning President Obama’s birth certificate, one must also believe he would not use the same tactic against a white candidate if the opportunity presented itself. In Movie 2, that seems deeply unlikely.

“They’re rapists” Scene

Movie 1: During the speech in which Trump announced his candidacy, he referred to illegal immigrants from Mexico as “rapists,” thus proving he is a racist.

Movie 2: President Trump noted that one of the big problems with illegal immigration from Mexico is that there are criminals in the group, and this country doesn’t need any more crime. This message was consistent with his tough-on-crime stance. The call-out of rape in particular might have been inspired by stories such as this one from Huffington Post, one of the President’s most vocal critics.

Failure to disavow KKK Scene

Movie 1: In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, candidate Trump hesitated to disavow David Duke and the KKK, thus proving he is a racist.

Movie 2: President Trump disavowed David Duke, the KKK, and White Supremacists multiple times, both before and after the Jake Tapper interview. Trump said he couldn’t hear Jake’s question because of a faulty earpiece. Trump seemed confused and/or hesitant about the question.

During the Tapper interview scene, Trump asked for a list of who he was being asked to disavow, clearly signaling that he sensed a trap coming. Would Trump next be asked to disavow non-racist groups that supported his tough-on-immigration stance? The media had already branded those supporters as racist too. In trying to avoid that obvious trap, Trump fumbled the question and made things worse. But racism was never the problem.

Hiring Steve Bannon Scene

Movie 1: Steve Bannon is a known white supremacist, so having him on the campaign staff and later briefly as an advisor in the White House proves Trump is a racist.

Movie 2: Steve Bannon is tough on illegal immigration, and tough on immigration from Muslim-majority countries with poor government records. His critics have framed him as being a racist because of it. People who know him personally say he isn’t.

The Racists Support Trump Scene

Movie 1: Racist groups support Trump because they hear his secret racist dog whistle, thus proving he is a racist.

Movie 2: Racists approve of Trump’s tough immigration policies in part, one assumes, because they think it will allow fewer non-whites into the country. Non-racist Trump supporters support Trump’s immigration policies because they place a high priority on law and order. Different groups can like the same thing for different reasons. For example, target shooters like guns, and murderers like guns, but that doesn’t make target shooters murderers.

Trump’s Awkward Language About “the blacks” scene

Movie 1: Trump once referred to African-Americans as “the blacks,” thus proving he is racist.

Movie 2: Trump says almost everything differently than the average person, and he doesn’t obsess over political correctness.

Judge Curiel Scene

Movie 1: President Trump said a “Mexican” judge couldn’t be fair, thus proving he is racist.

Movie 2: President Trump spoke about the judge using the common vernacular, in the the same way Americans typically talk about their own ethnic backgrounds. Ask a neighbor whose grandparents immigrated to the United States from Italy to describe his family and he’s likely to say, “We’re Italian.”

Trump mentioned Judge Curiel’s Mexican heritage to point out that it could be a source of bias in the Trump University case because the media had successfully framed Trump as being racist against U.S. residents with Mexican roots. In the context of a legal case, it can be good strategy to question a judge’s impartiality. The intended effect of it is to influence the judge to bend over backwards to avoid the appearance of bias. In this situation, Judge Curiel had to rule on when to schedule the trial, and he chose the option that had the best appearance of fairness, scheduling it after the election, as Trump preferred. Trump’s legal strategy probably worked.

Charlottesville Scene

Movie 1: Trump called White Supremacists “fine people,” thus proving he is a racist.

Movie 2: Trump has publicly disavowed white supremacists numerous times, both before and after running for president. In the context of Charlottesville, the “fine people” he was referring to were non-racists who prefer keeping confederate statues for historical/cultural reasons. The anti-Trump wing of the media distorted President Trump’s statements to fit their racist narrative, saying incorrectly that he referred to the racists with tiki torches as the “fine people.” He didn’t.

For a longer explanation, see my blog post on the topic.

Calling NFL Kneelers “Sons-of-bitches” Scene

Movie 1: President Trump referred to the African-American football players kneeling during the national anthem in protest of police brutality as “sons of bitches,” thus proving he is a racist.

Movie 2: President Trump would criticize any American who disrespected the country. The main topic of the NFL protests has been police brutality, but the method of protest strikes many observers as disrespect for the flag.

Shithole Scene

Movie 1: During a closed meeting, Trump referred to people from several non-white-majority countries as “shit,” thus proving he is a racist.

Movie 2: In the context of immigration, Trump referred to some countries as “shithole countries” as a shorthand way of saying they have poor educational systems and low-performing economies. During the meeting, Trump asked for an explanation on the pros and cons of favoring those countries for immigration versus a merit-based system.

Animals Scene

Movie 1: President Trump referred to illegal immigrants as “animals,” thus proving he is a racist.

Movie 2: President Trump referred to MS-13 gang members as animals and the media took it out of context to mean immigrants in general.

The Roseanne’s Tweet Scene

Movie 1: Roseanne tweeted that Valerie Jarrett, who is part African-American, was like a cross between the Muslim Brotherhood and Planet of the Apes. Years earlier, Roseanne once tweeted that Susan Rice, who is African-American, was a man with big swinging ape balls. President Trump did not disavow Roseanne’s comparisons of black people to apes, thus proving he is racist.

Movie 2: Roseanne said she didn’t know Valerie Jarrett was part African-American, and neither did most Trump supporters who couldn’t deduce her ethnic background by looking at her. That suggests Roseanne uses insulting monkey references no matter the assumed ethnicity of the target. President Trump did not disavow Roseanne’s tweet because the accusation that it was intentional racism was fake news. Trump supporters see Roseanne’s Planet of the Apes reference as a humorous comparison to the character played by Helena Bonham Carter, a white actress. And Trump supporters understand that white people routinely compare other white people to monkeys. For example, parents call their own grandkids monkeys. And they sometimes refer to large white men as big apes. In Movie 2, Roseanne made a terrible mistake, but it wasn’t an intentional racist reference.

Muslim Ban Scene

Movie 1: President Trump succeeded in banning several Muslim-majority countries from immigration to the United States, thus proving he is a racist.

Movie 2: President Trump banned immigration from countries with dysfunctional governments because it is hard to do background checks without reliable government records. The focus on Muslim countries is because Islamic terrorists can more easily blend in with Muslim refugees than they could with non-Muslim refugees, and we know they have tried to do exactly that.

As I often say, we humans are not good at knowing which movie is the “real” one because the facts in evidence often fit more than one explanation of the past. So instead of looking to the past, I recommend seeing which movie best predicts future scenes.

For example, if you had been making predictions based on these different movies, Movie 1, predicted that President Trump would not be popular with Israel, and he wouldn’t take the bold step of moving the American embassy to Jerusalem. But both of those outcomes are compatible with Movie 2.

Movie 1 would have predicted there is no way President Trump would grant a posthumous pardon of African-American boxer Jack Johnson because it wouldn’t fit the racist dog whistle script. But Movie 2 is compatible with the pardon. Same with the pardon of Alice Johnson.

Movie 1 would have predicted that President Trump would underplay the fact that black unemployment reached its best level in the history of America. That’s the sort of accomplishment that would make his racist supporters stop hearing the secret racist dog whistle. It doesn’t fit. But President Trump’s frequent highlighting of gains for African-American citizens fits Movie 2 perfectly.

I realize no one reading this post will change movies because of it. My only point today is that mainstream Trump supporters are not knowingly supporting someone they believe to be a racist. It only looks that way to the folks trapped in Movie 1.

Texans Players Kneel During National Anthem To Protest Racist Team Owner

The “inmates” have spoken. Houston Texan players took a knee during the National Anthem in direct response to comments made by team owner Bob McNair last week.

Cardi B Calls Hotel Staffers “Racist Muthaf*ckas” After Getting Thrown Out

Cardi B must be saying “it was all good just a week ago” because this past weekend has seen her go through some weirdly tough times.

After apparently breaking up and getting back together with her boo Offset, Cardi found herself getting the boot from the Hilton Hotel in Albany, New York.

According to TMZ the “Bodak Yellow” rapper was staying at the Hilton Hotel when around 1am people began to complain about the noise coming from her hotel suite. After a heated exchange with hotel security, Cardi and her team were ordered to vacate the premises which she did but not before getting caught on video yelling “racist muthaf*ckas” to the hotel staff in the lobby.

A rep for the the Albany PD told TMZ that the hotel manager called them around 1am to report that Cardi had a party going on and the aroma of marijuana was filling the hallway. By the time the police arrived on the scene Cardi was already in the process of leaving and contrary to what the hotel manager said, police found no evidence that anyone in the suite was partaking in the chronic. Even though no one on the team was dirty, everyone complied with the request and left the hotel but obviously not before Cardi gave her two cents on the situation.

Shia LaBeouf Goes Full Racist On Cops, On Cue Says He’s An Addict

Shia LaBeouf went full racist, and it was all caught on video. So of course, he has apologized and said he’s pretty much a dope fiend, so please don’t be mad.

The actor was arrested for charges including public drunkenness and disorderly conduct in Savannah, GA, and he was taken to the local station.

This is where he went on a privilege-soaked tirade against the arresting officers. But LaBeouf then upped the struggle ante by throwing in racist jabs.

In one newly release clip, Shia came for a Black officer.

Says TMZ:

In newly released video, while Shia was being fingerprinted he looked at a black officer and said, “You’re going to hell, straight to hell, bro.”

A white cop questioned the drunk actor, and added … “That doesn’t mean he’s going to hell.” Shia responded, “It means a whole lot, bro.”

LaBeouf goes on to say he was arrested for being white. True story.

But but wait, there’s more. LaBeouf taunted a white officer by telling him his wife watches porn movies involving large black genitals. Again, true story, bro.

Right on cue, LaBeouf has apologized and says he is an addict who has hit bottom. No mention of rehab since he’s busy shooting a movie in Savannah, though.

We hope he gets the help he needs. Also, sober or lucid, he’s still a racist. So there’s that.

Donald Trump “Fired From NBC After Racist Mexican Remarks

The Donald Trump’s decision to generalize Mexican immigrants as “rapists” and criminals has led NBC to leave him and his Miss America pageants out on the curb.

NBC announced today, June 29, that they would no longer broadcast the The Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants on their network.

“At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values. Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump,” they said in a statement obtained by Deadline. “To that end, the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe Pageants, which are part of a joint venture between NBC and Trump, will no longer air on NBC .In addition, as Mr. Trump has already indicated, he will not be participating in Celebrity Apprentice on NBC.”

Following his laughable presidential bid, Trump spoke out his ass regarding the country’s North American counterparts, focusing on the extreme negative of a select few.

“When do we beat Mexico at the border?,” he cried. “They’re laughing at us, at our stupidity. And now they are beating us economically. They are not our friend, believe me. … When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They are bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

Of course there was backlash but Trump promises not to take this lying down. Following the announcement that his services over at NBC were no longer desired, he released a statement revealing his intention to sue the company.

“If NBC is so weak and so foolish to not understand the serious illegal immigration problem in the United States, coupled with the horrendous and unfair trade deals we are making with Mexico, then their contract violating closure of Miss Universe/Miss USA will be determined in court,” it read.

“With my statements on immigration, which happen to be correct, [NBC is] going to take a different stance – that’s okay,” he said. “As far as ending the relationship, I have to do that, because my view on immigration is much different than the people at NBC. You have to stop illegal immigration. I know NBC might disagree with me, but you cannot have illegal immigration.”

Dylann Roof’s Website Featured Racist Content, Confederate Flag Photos

As the nation becomes uncomfortably familiar with alleged Charleston church shooter Dylan Roof, details are forthcoming that suggest the 21-year-old exposed himself to radical racist ideals. Two twitter users apparently discovered a website that seems to be registered to Roof and features racist content, photos of the Confederate Flag and other questionable items.

Twitter users @HenryKrinkle and @EMQuangel discovered the now-defunct website “lastrhodesian.com,” which ties in with photos of Roof wearing a jacket emblazoned with the former invaded African region of Rhodesia’s flag. Roof reportedly penned a rambling manifesto that puts Roof in charge of some manner of the white revolution he dreamed up in his head.

More from Raw Story:

In a chilling confession, the author defended what he was about to do, writing, “I have no choice. I am not in the position to, alone, go into the ghetto and fight. I chose Charleston because it is most historic city in my state, and at one time had the highest ratio of blacks to Whites in the country. We have no skinheads, no real KKK, no one doing anything but talking on the internet. Well someone has to have the bravery to take it to the real world, and I guess that has to be me. ”

In the document (seen below) the author expressed unhappiness with Jews and Hispanics, but saved his real ire for blacks, writing, “I wish with a passion that n*ggers were treated terribly throughout history by Whites, that every White person had an ancestor who owned slaves, that segregation was an evil an oppressive institution, and so on. Because if it was all it true, it would make it so much easier for me to accept our current situation.”

Regal Cinemas Fires Troll For Shooting Off Racist Tweets [Photos]

At the current state of America, Black people have zero tolerance for any sort of perceived racism crossing their paths. A historic Black church was just shot up (during a prayer service of all times), a white woman famous for pretending to be Black for civil rights is becoming a viral sensation right underneath or unsuspecting noses and police officers are still using sledgehammers to solve ant-sized problems. So when Twitter user Hyley DiBona began to spew off ignorance via her Twitter account, she got the 1000 times the attention than her 2,988 followers generally attracts.

As the nation mourned over the nine lives lost inside the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, allegedly at the hands of 21-year-old Dylann Roof, DiBona showed just how her privilenge blinded her to the realities of the world.

“Don’t complain about being a minority and say whites are a problem when your ancestors chose to come here knowing they would be a minority,” she exclaimed in the start of unprovoked tweets. “Half of minorities might as well have ‘you should feel bad for being white’ tattooed on their foreheads. IF YOU ARE A MINORITY AND DONT LIKE IT, GO BACK THATS WHAT FREEDOM IS.”

After she noticed she had garnered an audience, she tweeted the n-word, relishing in the type of a behavior a culture vulture is known to do. When angered Twitter users pointed out the fact that her views could be aligned with her employer, DiBona taunted them, revealing that she worked for Regal Cinemas and even took pictures of minority movie goers urging them to “go home.”

That was all that was needed to fan the flames and DDotOmen spearheaded a movement that garnered the attention of the country’s largest chain of theaters.

Swiftly and fiercely, she was fired.

That ‘Racist’ J.Crew Ad Isn’t Racist. Here’s Why.

There’s a photo of a J.Crew ad being shared around social media right now that shows a black male model with the words “We Own Them.”

View post on imgur.com

Seems pretty racially insensitive, right? Here’s the good news: it’s been ALTERED.

j crew

We looked for the ad ourselves and found it in the July 2015 “Style Guide” catalog. The real ad actually reads: “Stripes: We Own Them.” Yes, that means that someone took it upon themselves to deliberately place their thumb over the word “stripes,” prompting a lot of folks to call the ad racist as the photo soared to the top of Reddit’s homepage on Tuesday afternoon.

jcrew ad

It’s unclear where the photo originated, but it’s already been seen more than a million times on Imgur alone and is spreading across Twitter. Sadly, situations like this are believable and often taken at face value since the fashion industry is plagued with racially insensitive imagery and a blatant lack of diversity.

We’re relieved that this J.Crew ad won’t be added to that notorious list.

The Huffington Post reached out for J.Crew for comment, and will update this post with any response.

Black Family Gets Racist Letter Demanding They Move Out 84 Percent White Neighborhood [PHOTOS]

Ronica Copes of the village Lindenhurst, New York got an unpleasant surprise in her mailbox last week and it wasn’t from some bill collector or The Maury Show.

The Black resident of the East New York community received an anonymous letter stating that her family’s presence wasn’t welcomed in the “84% white population.”

“Sooooo, I’m checking my mail and when I come across this I can’t help but laugh..wait, it’s not funny though,” an astonished Copes wrote on her Facebook page, Thursday, May 21. “Where they do that at? Oh yeah Lindenhurst. Unbelievable but then it’s not…our daily reality, I’ve just never seen it in this form.”

According to the New York Post, Copes 37, a freelance publicist and caterer, have been living in their residence since 2013 so it appears the racists just now mustered up enough courage to speak out.

The Town of Babylon, the hub for Lindenhurst, got wind of the letter and issued a statement denouncing its message.

The Town of Babylon was made aware that an anonymous letter was delivered to an African-American family in Lindenhurst that espoused racist hateful views. Elected Officials from the Town of Babylon and Village of Lindenhurst have issued the following statement.

“We strongly condemn this hateful letter and are working closely with the Suffolk County Police and our Anti-Bias Task Force to investigate this incident. The best way to fight bias is with solidarity and we stand with all of our residents in declaring that there is no place for this type of intolerance and hatred in the Village of Lindenhurst, the Town of Babylon, or anywhere in our community. We are, and always will be, a strong diverse community that does not cede ground to hostility, ignorance, or hatred, wherever it may appear.”

– Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer
– Lindenhurst Village Mayor Tom Brennan
– Babylon Deputy Supervisor and member of Babylon Anti-Bias Task Force, Tony Martinez
– Babylon Town Councilman Tom Donnelly
– Babylon Town Councilwoman Jackie Gordon
– Babylon Town Councilman Lindsay Henry
– Babylon Town Clerk Carol Quirk
– Babylon Town Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma
– Lindenhurst Village Deputy Mayor Michael Lavorata
– Lindenhurst Village Trustee Joan Masterson
– Lindenhurst Village Trustee Darrel Kost
– Lindenhurst Village Trustee Maryann Wecerkle

The Suffolk County Police Department are also investigating the letter as a potential hate crime.

White Principal Loses It With Racist Rant During Graduation Ceremony [VIDEO]

Last Friday (May 8) at the TNT Academy in Stone Mountain, Ga., a graduation ceremony shifted gears into a negative space after the alternative private school’s principal, Nancy Gordeuk, blurted out some questionably racist statements. Gordeuk has since apologized, but the damage might be far too severe to recover from.

As reported by The Grio and NBC News, video clips of Gordeuk’s racist rant began to be distributed throughout social media. It all began when Gordeuk made the mistake of ending the graduation ceremony before TNT’s valedictorian made his speech.

As people began to file out to the parking lot, Gordeuk, also the founder of TNT, took to the microphone and blasted Black members of the audience for leaving. Raw Story also reported on the situation and broke down some of the exchanges between Gordeuk and attendees.

More from Raw Story:

“I think y’all owe this young man an apology, especially that goober that was coming through with his little thing. That was so rude,” she says, alluding to an unidentified student. “Where are you, you little coward? Come on back up here and let’s talk.”

After that remark, three white people can be seen standing up and leaving. Seconds later, Gordeuk says, “Y’all are the rudest people I’ve ever seen in my life.”

The crowd reacts with alarm, as Gordeuk orders staff members to close the doors. The man videotaping Gordeuk can be heard urging others, “Just let her do her thing.”

“You people are so rude to not listen to this speech,” Gordeuk continues, as the unidentified valedictorian, a white person, stands near her. “It was my fault that we missed it in the program. Look who’s leaving, all the black people.”

Gordeuk issued a written apology on Saturday, but many are calling for her to step down from her post. She told NBC News the rant was just a moment of frustration, but others allege it was a sentiment she’d been hiding inside all along.

Cutty From The Wire Barks On Racist NYC Train Passenger [VIDEO]

Freddie Gray’s death and the protests that followed drew the line between police and Black and brown civilians deeper in the sand. Those feelings of angst resonated throughout the country, as shown in this footage of actor Chad L. Coleman reacting angrily to racist comments said by a New York City train passenger.

Famous for his roles as Cutty on Baltimore-based series The Wire and Tyrese on The Walking Dead, Coleman spoke with TMZ   after the video went viral.

Admittedly frustrated by the happenings in Baltimore, Coleman said he overheard a white man say, “No, we don’t know that ni**er,” on the 4 train, after deliberating with a friend about how they recognized him.

The actor says that he wasn’t drunk, if that’s what you were thinking. Peep the footage below.

Roger Moore Takes Back Racist Idris Elba James Bond Jab

Roger Moore, an actor who played the iconic James Bond character in film made what some felt was a racist jab towards English actor, Idris Elba. Moore seemingly balked at Elba playing Bond but has since backtracked on comments he made in a magazine.

Moore, who played Bond in seven films, was quoted in an interview in Paris Match magazine where he not only took a dig at Elba but also threw Cuba Gooding Jr. under the bus as well.

“A few years ago, I said that Cuba Gooding Jr. would make an excellent Bond, but it was a joke,” said Moore “Although James may have been played by a Scot, a Welshman and an Irishman, I think he should be ‘English-English’. Nevertheless, it’s an interesting idea, but unrealistic.”

The last portion of his comment was apparently aimed at the speculation that Elba would play the super spy after the Sony Pictures email hack revealed talks of that role switch occuring. The Grio reported on the backlash that Moore received over his viewpoints, and the actor took to Twitter and essentially took back his comments.

“An interview I gave to Paris Match implies I said something racist about Idris Elba. That is simply untrue. #Lost in translation,” tweeted More on Saturday.

Thus far, it doesn’t seem like Elba or his reps have issued any comments regarding Moore.

Do you think Idris Elba should play the iconic and traditionally white James Bond character? Sound off in the comments.

Could You Be Racist And Not Know It? 10 Ways To Change For The Better

Just because you cringed in disbelief and outrage when you watched the viral clip that recently made headlines of a racially offensive chant by some of the SAE fraternity members at University of Oklahoma doesn’t mean you don’t have work to do when it comes to race. According to Dr. Charles Gallagher, a professor and chair of the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at La Salle University, we’re all a little racist. Is it possible you draw on racist stereotypes to shape your views? Gallagher, who recently faced off with David Wayne Hull, an Imperial Wizard of the White Knights of the KKK, on a heated episode of Dr. Phil suggests you answer these questions to determine how you define race, and if you might draw on racist stereotypes to shape your views:

1. If an Asian person walks into a classroom, do you believe he or she is good in math?
2. When you see two to three black men walking down toward you at night with hoodies on, do you cross the street? Or think about going in another direction?
3. Do you believe that most of the Latinos who live in California are undocumented?
4. Do you believe that populations such as Jewish, Latino, Asian, or black are over 30 percent in the U.S.?
5. Do you believe whites are the minority in America?

Do you still question whether racism and prejudice play a part in your life? Further explore it here.

If either of these tests has given you concern about your use of racial stereotypes, Gallagher — who’s currently writing a book called Colorblind Nation: The Denial of Race and The Rise of Racial Inequality — suggests you might want to consider these tips for improving your attitude about those who may be different from you.

1. Talk to your family: Think about the history of your privilege. What advantages have you been afforded because of your race? Look into your past and see where you come from and the role it plays in your personal success today.

2. Avoid stereotypical language: Be mindful that words and phrases that a person uses to describe a group can easily fall into being a stereotype. When you hear someone say, “All black people do …,” or “Latinos always …,” or “I never met an Asian person who …,” that should raise a red flag. Ask the person if he/she is referring to an individual or speaking for the 40 million Latinos, 10 million Asians, or 38 million black people in this country. Does he/she really believe every person in these groups shares the same behaviors and beliefs?

3. Don’t tolerate racist jokes: Racism isn’t funny. If you listen, you’ll see how people around you really talk about race. We filter out the people we love and give them a pass. Don’t give them a pass.

4. Be introspective: Be honest about your own biases and where they come from. Overcoming racist attitudes in a society starts with you.

5. Vote: Young people historically don’t vote. Be engaged politically, educate yourself on the issues and a candidate’s rhetoric before you give him/her your support.

6. Don’t let the media dictate to you: TV writers have a huge rolodex of stereotypical and hyperbolic characters. It’s lazy. They roll out the “Latino domestic” or the “all-wise black woman,” and the viewer fills in the rest.

7. Learn your family’s history: The only way not to repeat the past is to learn from it. What may have been normative for your grandparents may be different from today or much the same. Eighty percent of blacks are mixed race, and that’s true for many whites as well. Knowing the history helps to shape the future.

8. Teach through example: As Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” You can set a positive example or be the role model of more accepting behavior.

9. Step out of your comfort zone: Take yourself into communities you don’t normally visit. Walking in another’s shoes is the best way to understand someone different from you. Try new food, listen to new music, try a new place of worship, shop at a new produce store; anything you can do to branch out and learn about different cultures.

10. Know thyself: Ask yourself these questions: Are your friends a diverse mix of people, or do you stick with your own kind? If you’re in the racial minority, how does that make you feel? Take some time to have a conversation about these questions with people around you, and learn what their views are.

Professor’s Theory About What Led The SAE Fraternity Brothers To Sing Racist Chant (VIDEO)

In a 9-second video that quickly went viral, students from the University of Oklahoma’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity chapter were seen on a bus clapping, pumping their fists and laughing as they sang a racist chant. The video sparked outrage, and the university expelled two students and shut down the fraternity chapter.

“My guess is that these young men — they’re probably not bad kids — but I bet they grew up in a white bubble. Their church is all white, their social networks are all white. They’ve probably never had someone of color in their living room to break bread,” says Dr. Charles Gallagher, a La Salle University professor and researcher in the field of racial and social inequality. In the video above, he tells Dr. Phil that he’s not surprised by the college students’ behavior. “When you get around same race groups of friends, things like this become OK.”

This episode of Dr. Phil airs Tuesday. Watch more here, including the story of a woman who says her father is an Imperial Wizard of the White Knights of the KKK and refuses to accept her biracial child.

‘Morning Joe’ Hosts Blame Rappers For Racist Frat Video And Twitter Responds In The Best Possible Way

Black Twitter blasted the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Wednesday for their controversial remarks about the racist actions of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity members at the University of Oklahoma.

Hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough brought up rapper Waka Flocka Flame’s “disgust” with the video and his decision to cancel his upcoming campus appearance before suggesting that rappers are in fact to blame for the fraternity’s racist behavior.

“If you look at every single song, I guess you call these, that he’s written, it’s a bunch of garbage,” Brzezinski said. “It’s full of N-words, it’s full of F-words. It’s wrong. And he shouldn’t be disgusted with them, he should be disgusted with himself.”

“The kids that are buying hip-hop or gangster rap, it’s a white audience, and they hear this over and over again,” Scarborough added. “So do they hear this at home? Well, chances are good, no, they heard a lot of this from guys like this who are now acting shocked.”

Brzezsinski clarified her comments in a later appearance on MSNBC, saying, “The students in the video are responsible for their behavior. And as we said on our show this morning, they did it, and it’s beyond appalling.”

“In no way is anybody else to blame for what they did on that bus,” she continued. “They are responsible and they made that choice.”

But the backlash had already begun. Twitter users took to their timelines to slam the statements through a satirical hashtag that has since become a trending topic: #RapAlbumsThatCausedSlavery.

Here are just a few examples of the tweets proving Black Twitter never disappoints:

Twitter Exposes Alleged SAE Frat Guy Who Led Racist Chant [Photos]

Nobody can hide in the world of social media, especially not racist and cowardice college students at the  University of Oklahoma. The alleged frat boy who led the racist chant that dismantled the entire universities SAE chapter in record time, has been exposed.

According to social media, his name is Parker Rice. There isn’t any real proof substantiating this just yet, but Rice’s name has been making the rounds for so many hours now that if it wasn’t him, he probably would’ve said something by now (unless he’s at work, or busy moving stuff out of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon frat house).

Social media is still aflame at the very thought of people acting like this—especially with the timing of its release. On Saturday (March 7), the nation was celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Selma march.

This video serves as a reminder of the institutionalized racism deeply rooted in the minds of young people who are assumed to be more progressive than the racist past from which they were clearly raised.

Madonna Says Controversial ‘Rebel Heart’ Photos Are Not ‘An Insult Or Racist’

Madonna is on the defensive after critics slammed the singer for tweeting photoshopped images of Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. to promote her upcoming album, “Rebel Heart.”

In a Facebook post shared on Saturday, the 56-year-old apologized before explaining her decision to share the photos. She wrote that her fans were the creators of the images, but added that neither she nor her fans are racist:

The controversial photos of Mandela and King, which were posted on Madonna’s Twitter account on Friday, feature the men with black rope bound to their faces, a la Madonna’s “Rebel Heart” cover art.

For comparision, here is Madonna’s “Rebel Heart” cover art:

Here are the altered photos of Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr.:

Madonna also tweeted similar photos of Princess Diana and Bob Marley in the style of the “Rebel Heart” album cover:

In December, Madonna tweeted various photos of people wrapped in black cords, including fans and celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Marilyn Monroe, Skrillex and Diplo. She also shared an altered photo of a statue of Jesus Christ with the “Rebel Heart” ropes wrapped around it.
