Sports News in Brief: Study: Human Reaction Time Now Best Measured By How Long It Takes To Pause ESPN Video Player

STANFORD, CA— Providing new insight into the inner workings of the central nervous system, a study published Friday by researchers at Stanford University revealed that human reaction time is now most accurately measured by the speed at which a person is able to pause a video on “The data clearly indicates that one’s ability to respond to sensory stimuli is best represented by the number of milliseconds that pass between seeing the video player load at the top of an ESPN article, hovering the cursor over it to reveal the control bar, and then hitting the pause button,” said Stanford neurologist Dana Frankel, adding that upon processing the audiovisual prompt, the brain will immediately begin firing neurons that signal the fingers to stop the video before sounds of a pre-roll commercial begin playing. “We’ve also found that we are able to actually improve upon this reflex …

The Reaction John Kasich Got For Embracing Gay Marriage Shows How Far The GOP Has Come

WASHINGTON — Ohio Gov. John Kasich drew applause during Thursday’s Republican presidential debate for saying that he accepted gay marriage even though it was counter to his “traditional” views.

“Our court has ruled and I said we’ll accept it,” Kasich said in response to a question from moderator Megyn Kelly about what he would do if his child were homosexual. “And guess what? I just went to a wedding of a friend of mine who is gay.”

“Just because they don’t think the same way doesn’t mean we shouldn’t love them,” he added. “That’s what we’re taught when we have strong faith.”

The crowd cheered Kasich’s response. The reaction contrasted starkly with a 2011 Republican presidential debate in which audience members booed Army Capt. Stephen Hill, a gay combat veteran, for speaking favorably about the repeal of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

“In 2010 when I was deployed to Iraq, I had to lie about who I was because I was a gay soldier, and I didn’t want to lose my job,” Hill said via videoconference during the debate. “My question is, under one of your presidencies, do you intend to circumvent the progress that’s been made for gay and lesbian soldiers in the military?”

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum responded to Hill by vowing to reinstate the ban on being openly gay in the military. “What we’re doing is playing social experimentation with our military right now, and that’s tragic,” he said, prompting cheers from the crowd.

“The military’s job is to do one thing, and that is to defend our country,” Santorum continued. “I believe this undermines that ability.”

Here’s What Happens When 50 Men Give Their Reaction To The Word ‘Gay’

How do men respond to the word “gay” in 2015?

A new video from Cut Video brings together 50 men ranging in age from 10 to 50-years-old for an experiment in word association in which each participant is asked about his reaction to the word “gay.”

The results are almost entirely positive, and say a lot about the social and political climate for queer people in 2015. Perhaps the most striking element of the video is the way that the word doesn’t even seem to phase the younger boys taking part in the project, while many of the older man have clearly been on a path to acceptance in order to get to a comfortable place with the term.

Check it out above.

Twitter Reaction To Jim Bob And Michelle Duggar Interview: Pure Horror

Wednesday night’s Fox News interview with “19 Kids and Counting” stars Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar about their son Josh’s admission that he molested five underage girls, including his sisters, caused the family name to immediately trend on Twitter.

Within hours, there were more than 10,000 tweets with the #Duggars hashtag, and many were horrified by the couple’s attempts to downplay their son’s behavior:

Several people commented on the awkward six-second pause during a part of the conversation in which Michelle Duggar was asked about the hypocrisy of robocalls she had made in an effort to fight a law promoting LGBT rights, which she warned would lead to transgendered people preying on children in restrooms.

That even drew a response from talk-show host Montel Williams:

Williams also shared his thoughts on Facebook:

There is something very sinister beneath the surface – these are people who basically said they thought they could be as preachy as they wanted because the records were sealed, these are people who seemingly minimize what happened in their home and essentially sent a message to their daughters to smile, nod and forgive. It’s eerily reminiscent of the ‘keep sweet’ mantra in Warren Jeffs’ FLDS.”

Others pointed out the hypocrisy of the Duggars craving the media spotlight with a TV show but then complaining about the media attention that the case has drawn:

Even “God” weighed in:

Fox News will air more of the interview on Friday night.

Laverne Cox’s Reaction To Caitlyn Jenner Reveals The Impossible Expectations Trans Women Face

There has been a din of voices — many of them cisgender — weighing in on Caitlyn Jenner’s Vanity Fair reveal. The majority of commentary has been support and praise. Aside from the usual string of transphobic comments from Internet trolls, most reactions have been positive, revolving around Jenner’s bravery, beauty and “realness” — concepts that the cis mainstream often clings to when embracing trans women. So when Laverne Cox posted a Tumblr blog yesterday celebrating Jenner, but also unpacking the politics of beauty surrounding Jenner’s warm reception, it was an interesting moment to gain real perspective from a trans woman.

“Yes, Caitlyn looks amazing and is beautiful,” Cox wrote, “But what I think is most beautiful about her is her heart and soul.”

caitlyn laverne

Cox argued that the emphasis on trans women’s beauty can be dangerous, writing, “There are many trans folks because of genetics and/or lack of material access who will never be able to embody [cisnormative beauty standards]…we should be seen as ourselves and respected as ourselves.”

Too often, mainstream acceptance is based on how traditionally feminine a trans woman can look, and often, a lack of material access, or a lack of desire to appear traditionally feminine makes it harder to achieve that acceptance. There’s no denying that wealth and whiteness inform Jenner’s positive and groundbreaking public reception.

What is perhaps most interesting about Cox’s commentary, is how just beneath the surface it seems to address (and maybe even critique) the parallels and differences between her own journey and Jenner’s.

“I have always been aware that I can never represent all trans people,” Cox writes, a sentiment she’s expressed before to address the criticism she’s received surrounding her celebrity.

Cox has an enthusiastic following, but she’s been called out in the past for being a “bad” feminist or a “bad” trans activist. In 2010, She got flack for allegedly perpetuating patriarchal ideals of womanhood on the reality series “TRANSform Me,” where she and two other trans women instilled cis women with confidence via feminizing makeovers that included getting rid of “boy clothes that women should not wear.”

In April, she appeared nude in Allure magazine, and the photo shoot was both praised as an empowering moment for trans women of color, and drew ire from feminist critics, most notably the blog feministcurrent. Blogger Meghan Murphy wrote: “So we are to believe that…achieving a ‘perfect’ body, as defined by a patriarchal/porn culture, through plastic surgery, then presenting it as a sexualized object for public consumption equates to ‘radical self-acceptance?”

At her talk at The New School last October with bell hooks, the feminist author praised Cox as a “goddess for justice,” but in the same breath accused her of conforming to Eurocentric and patriarchal ideals of beauty with her high heels, designer dresses and signature blonde wigs.

Jenner, on the other hand, has not received nearly as much criticism about her traditionally feminine appearance. Some have suggested that there’s a double standard in the way Jenner has been accepted vs. how Cox has been, that as a white woman Jenner has been afforded less scrutiny and more accolades, and that her cover photo (as Marc Lamont Hill put it on Twitter) has “smuggled in the same old cis/Eurocentric narratives about womanhood.”

Of course, the overwhelmingly positive reaction to Jenner’s transition is ultimately a good thing, and it makes sense. She’s older, she was once a beloved Olympian who represented the epitome of hypermasculinity, and has been a reality TV star connected to one of the most talked-about families in America for the last nine years.

But whether intentional or not, the image of Cox’s Time magazine cover beside Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover, speaks volumes. The timing of Cox’s blog post, and its simultaneously celebratory and critical tone, sparks questions about how the narratives of visible trans women are constructed. The Jenner buzz has a lot to do with celebrity culture and the current conversation around trans people, but it also brings up questions about race and privilege that have yet to be addressed in a meaningful way.

And yet, it’s difficult to know where and when it’s right to leverage these kinds of critiques. Did Cox’s essay detract from Jenner’s history-making moment? As it critiqued the beauty-conscious culture that informed support for Jenner, was it also critiquing her glamorous look? It’s hard to say.

Defending herself last year against bell hooks’ accusations that her feminism is compromised by her highly feminine presentation, Cox said: “This is where I feel empowered, ironically, and comfortable. I think it’s important to note that not all trans women are embracing this, but this trans woman does. And this trans woman feels empowered by this.”

Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover, similarly, is an empowering moment — even as we complicate its implications. That, perhaps, is the biggest takeaway from Cox’s essay. The expectations put on the current group of visible and successful trans women, both white and WOC, are becoming increasingly unrealistic.

Why is it the responsibility of trans women, as they knock down doors, to also subvert gender norms, to smash the patriarchy, and to defy deep-seated standards of beauty? It isn’t, and it shouldn’t be. Cox, Jenner, and all trans women should have the freedom and the agency to make their own decisions, and to walk in their own truths. There’s a larger conversation to be had, of course, about what Jenner’s Vanity Fair spread means going forward: how it will trickle down to less privileged and visible trans people, and if it will in fact effect political change. Caitlyn Jenner has cited Laverne Cox as an inspiration to her, and in spite of everything, there’s a power in that. Today, Jenner has not only graced the cover of a respected mainstream magazine and garnered the support of millions of people. Finally, she is being seen, and heard, on her own terms.

Woman Faces Friend Who Lied To Her About Having Cancer (And It’s Not The Reaction You Expect)

Imagine your best friend telling you she is facing the battle of a lifetime: incurable cancer. Then, after you’ve supported her in every way you could — even shaving your head in solidarity — you discover that the cancer diagnosis was a lie.

That’s what happened to Chelsey. When the 25-year-old learned that her dear friend Meaghan had terminal cancer, she banded together with other friends in support. In addition to shaving their heads, the women got matching tattoos and raised thousands of dollars to help with Meaghan’s medical bills. After 14 months of comforting their friend, Meaghan confessed that it was all a lie — she didn’t have cancer, and she wasn’t going to die. Hear why Meaghan says she faked cancer.

Now, for the first time since the truth was revealed, Meaghan comes face to face with Chelsey in the video above.

Meaghan apologizes to Chelsey for taking months to face her and says, “I want you to know that the reason I haven’t reached out is not because I don’t care or because I’m not sorry, because that’s not true. I think that I wanted to figure out as much as I could why I got to this point … I betrayed you. I betrayed your trust. I’ve done it before, and it wasn’t fair.”

Dr. Phil asks Meaghan, “Are you sorry for what you’ve done to her?”

“I am very, very, very sorry,” she says. “I am sorry to [Chelsey], to all of the girls, to my family.”

Chelsey addresses Meaghan. “I don’t want you to think that I hate you, because I don’t. I don’t wish any harm on you,” she says. “My first and still reaction has always just been heartbreak, knowing what kind of a broken place that must come from to do something like that and to feel so unlovable that you thought that’s something that you had to do. The amount of shame and guilt that you must feel is probably far worse than any punishment that could be inflicted on you.”

Chelsey says she and their other friends didn’t deserve what Meaghan put them through, but as awful as the situation has been, it’s better than Meaghan dying of cancer. “I wish that you could have stopped it before it went on as long as it did,” says Chelsey. “I think you can move on from this; I don’t think this has to define you.”

Shocked Parents Film Family’s Reaction To Finding Out Their Ultrasound Was Wrong

Parents Kyle and Danielle Williams were in for a big surprise on March 3 when their new baby — whom an ultrasound technician had said would be a girl — came out all boy.

“I was speechless and couldn’t believe my eyes,” Kyle told The Huffington Post. “I had been up 24 hours and thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.” Her husband in shock, Danielle didn’t hear the news until the doctor gave his congratulations on the birth of her baby boy. “She was in disbelief and thought we were all joking,” Kyle recalled.

After getting over their initial surprise, Kyle and Danielle decided to film the reactions of their various family members as they told them the girl they were all expecting turned out to be a boy. The final video, which has reached over 120,000 views on YouTube in just three days, features some truly golden moments — like the bit where Danielle’s mother Linda Monday-Jones learns her new grandchild’s sex while changing the baby’s diaper.

The family had to quickly shift from their baby name choice, Charlee, to Bentley Thomas Williams. But ultimately, when the Williams — who already have a 2-year-old daughter named Peyton — learned that the ultrasound technician had made a mistake, Kyle says, “We didn’t care. We are just happy to have a healthy baby.”

And as for little Peyton, “Our daughter really doesn’t fully understand the confusion I don’t think.,” Kyle said. “She was happy just to have a new baby sibling.”

Reaction to Bad News

When something unexpected and bad happens to you, what is your initial reaction?

I hate to admit this, but my first reaction is usually excitement. Nothing good or interesting happens when everything is working as expected. In chaos we find opportunity, as the saying goes. When one door closes, another opens, or so they say. And of course we have all absorbed the wisdom that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. But are those old saying enough to make you actually feel good when things around you are going to hell?

I sometimes wonder if my excitement in the face of problems is a common reaction. I know I conceal my excitement when I’m surrounded by gloomy pessimists who think the world has ended. It feels rude to exhibit happiness within the context of something going totally wrong. It makes me wonder if other people are closet optimists too, politely hiding their glee when they encounter huge problems.

I don’t know what made me this way, but when things go wrong, it automatically triggers my creative energy and I suppose I enjoy that rush, as well as the freedom that comes with destruction.

When my computer started giving me illegitimate errors saying my copy of Windows is counterfeit, I learned there was literally no practical solution (in my unique case) short of wiping the hard drive. Bad news, right?

But it caused me to add a second monitor to my system just to hold the error message pop-ups. After a week with the second monitor my productivity was way up because I put my useful work on top of the error windows. So I came out ahead.

At the same time, the Windows errors were enough to push me to switch to an all-Apple shop, which I had been putting off. So that is good too. I’m almost ready to cut over.

When i lost my ability to speak for more than three years I did a ton of vocal and speech exercises trying to get my voice back. In the end, the solution was a new and risky surgical procedure. Once I healed, my voice was more functional than ever because I learned proper speaking technique. In the old days, no one could ever hear me speaking above background noise. Now I do it easily because it turns out that technique matters more than loudness in that situation. And since we live in a noisy world, my new vocal abilities are a huge benefit to me nearly every day.

I would be hard-pressed to come up with an example of bad news in my life that didn’t lead to something positive. But perhaps that is selective memory.

My curiosity today is about your reaction to bad news in your own life. Does it excite you or depress you?
