Luciano Benetton Receives Doctor of Fine Arts From FIT

Luciano Benetton and designer, engineer and inventor Chuck Hoberman were awarded honorary degrees of Doctor of Fine Arts Thursday at the Fashion Institute of Technology’s commencement exercises at Radio City Music Hall. In addition, artist Harry Bertschmann received the President’s Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Lilliana Vazquez, celebrity stylist and TV personality, spoke at the morning ceremony for students graduating from FIT’s School of Art and Design and School of Liberal Arts, while Hoberman, who invented the Hoberman Sphere, and has over 20 patents for his transformable inventions, addressed graduates of FIT’s Jay and Patty Baker School of Business and Technology in the afternoon.
Hoberman offered some words of advice to the graduates. First, you need a lot of ideas to get to the good ones, don’t be afraid to have a vision, don’t stress waiting for one big light bulb moment, write your ideas down, sketch, you need to be experts in something specific, and when you hit a wall, invent your way out of it.
As reported, Benetton, who just turned 83, has been back in the news because in January he resumed having the reins of the family-owned company as executive president, with the goal to turn around the fashion group

Yohji Yamamoto Receives Design for Asia Lifetime Achievement Award

HONG KONG — “Let me say, I think I’m a good dressmaker, but I’m not a very good talker,” said Yohji Yamomoto.
The Japanese designer was in Hong Kong at the Design for Asia gala dinner Friday night to accept a lifetime achievement award. Dressed in all black, he tipped his signature hat onstage as he collected the accolade, given to a figure who has demonstrated “visionary shaping designs across a variety of fields, and who uses design to educate and promote wider use of design in society.”
Although the 74-year-old designer has been a celebrated figure for many years — best known for his dark and avant-garde tailoring — he shared that the night held extra special meaning for him.
“In my long career, in design, architecture, [I’ve been to] so many parties, this is the very first time that I have such a warm feeling, I really appreciate this. Please let me become your family,” he said.
In 2011, Yamamoto received the Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters, the highest honor in arts and culture in France, where he has shown his collections since 1981.
The night also honored hotelier Adrian Zecha, the founder of the Aman resorts and a new affordable luxury hotel

Man Receives Father’s Day Card From Dead Son — 26 Years Later

The Father’s Day card may have been 26 years too late, but for one dad in Lynchburg, Virginia, it was a priceless gift from beyond the grave.

In 1989, Duane Schrock Jr. wrote his dad a note for Father’s Day and sent it in the mail. The card was lost in transit and his dad never received it.

Until now.

Duane Schrock Sr. told WSET that his son’s card finally found its way to him, fittingly arriving at his home a few days after Father’s Day this year.

“Somebody picked up the ball and carried it and after all these years they must still have forwarded it,” Schrock, who is 87, told the news outlet. “I still kind of tear up when I think about it.”

The card had evidently been returned to sender and forwarded on several different occasions. Shrock says he’s moved all around the country in the intervening years.

fathers day card

“Dear Dad,” the card read, per ABC News. “We haven’t been in touch for quite a while, I’m doing fine and am very happy in Richmond, I’d like to hear from you. Have a Happy Father’s Day. Love Duane.”

Shrock said the letter was an especially poignant surprise as his son, who was gay, died of AIDS in 1995. Shrock added that their relationship had been strained when Duane was alive because he’d struggled to accept his son’s homosexuality.

The letter, Shrock told WSET, was “like a sign from heaven that his son is doing just fine.”

Kelli O’Hara Receives “Our Leading Lady” Award for 15 Years On Broadway (VIDEO)

2015-06-12-1434133235-5861471-KelliSteve2.jpg

By Steve Schonberg; Video Producer: Meredith Ganzman

SCROLL DOWN TO WATCH THE INTERVIEW AND SEE KELLI RECEIVE THE “OUR LEADING LADY” AWARD!

On Sunday, June 7, famed Broadway actress and fan favorite, Kelli O’Hara (who I profiled here, last year) was finally recognized by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing for her remarkable contributions to the stage, taking home her very first TONY Award following a total of six nominations over several years.

In the weeks leading up, fans took to social media with a fervor, debating who exactly should win for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. Many were in “Camp Kristin” for Chenoweth’s outstanding performance as Lily Garland in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of On The 20th Century. Others rooted for theater legend Chita Rivera and her performance as Claire Zachanassian in Kander and Ebb’s final musical, The Visit (which Rivera has said will likely be her final role on Broadway).

However, the support for O’Hara was fierce, and her fans were ultimately vindicated on TONY night as she received the award for her stunning and complex performance as Anna Leonowens in the Lincoln Center revival of The King and I.

Weeks before the TONY Awards, our team at Center On The Aisle (#COTA – the website I run in addition to contributing here on The Huffington Post) was also split, but peace came by acknowledging exactly what this incredible recognition represents. All three of these women were frontrunners, and deserved to win for different reasons. However, if the TONY Awards have a weakness, it’s that other than its Lifetime Achievement awards, they celebrate only a single performance–not the performer’s body of work and total contribution to the art form.

Realizing this, our team did a little research and found out that this year did not just bring Kelli her sixth nomination, her performance in The King and I marked a total of 15 years on Broadway, and her 10th Broadway show.

To acknowledge this, the #COTA team (with the help of a special celebrity guest included in the video below!) decided to take matters into our own hands and recognize Kelli O’Hara for all of these incredible performances (whether she won the TONY Award or not), which collectively have made her one of the most recognizable and talented actresses on stage today.

Check out the video below to see me present Kelli with Center On The Aisle’s first ever award, titled “Our Leading Lady.”

Andrea Lardini Receives Honorary Degree

Andrea Lardini, president of high-end fashion company Lardini, received an honorary degree in engineering management on Wednesday from the Università Politecnica delle Marche, a university in Ancona, on Italy’s central east coast.
Dean Sauro Longhi and professor Maurizio Bevilacqua presented the degree to Lardini, who gave a lecture titled: “From the Marche a successful Made in Italy, built on creativity, determination and courage.”
Lardini was recognized for his commitment to and passion for his family company; he had previously abandoned an engineering management course after two years of study to focus on the Lardini business.
Lardini, based outside Ancona, has produced garments for a range of luxury firms, such as Burberry, Brooks Brothers and Etro, and also manufactures a namesake men’s wear line, which debuted in 2013. The company produces an estimated 1,700 garments daily, employing 400 people directly and 700 indirectly.
Last year, Lardini’s turnover was 60 million euros, or about $ 79.7 million at average exchange.

Memories Pizza In Indiana Receives Donations After Backlash Over Gay Weddings Stance

An Indiana pizzeria under fire for saying it would refuse to cater a gay wedding shut down on Wednesday after its owners said they received threatening messages.

However, a GoFundMe page set up for Memories Pizza in Walkerton has raised more than $ 40,000 in just six hours.

The pizzeria made national headlines this week when its owners called the business a “Christian establishment” and said the state’s contentious Religious Freedom Restoration Act would allow it to refuse to make pizzas for a hypothetical gay wedding.

That led to a flood of angry reviews on Yelp as well as the threatening messages.

I don’t know if we will re-open, or if we can, if it’s safe to re-open,” co-owner Crystal O’Connor told TheBlaze, the news network run by conservative talk show host Glenn Beck. “We’re in hiding basically, staying in the house.”

The fundraiser was set up by Dana Loesch of TheBlaze, and Lawrence B. Jones III, a contributor to the network.

“Nobody should ever have to suffer or suffer alone for their faith, for standing up for Christian principles,” Loesch said on her broadcast.

Earlier in the day, Memories co-owner Kevin O’Conner said he would serve a gay customer in his store, but wouldn’t provide pizzas for a gay wedding.

That lifestyle is something they choose. I choose to be heterosexual,” O’Conner told ABC 57. “They choose to be homosexual. Why should I be beat over the head to go along with something they choose?”

O’Conner also told the Daily Beast that he had never been asked to cater a gay wedding.

“I don’t turn anybody away from the store, I don’t have a problem with gay people,” he was quoted as saying. “I just don’t condone the marriage.”

After the story went viral, the restaurant’s Yelp page quickly filled with negative reviews and images. However, those reviews will likely be removed as they do not describe a firsthand customer experience at the business.

“Non-germane, media-fueled reviews typically violate our Content Guidelines,” a Yelp spokesperson told The Huffington Post. “One of these deals with relevance. For example, reviews aren’t the place for rants about a business’s employment practices, political ideologies, extraordinary circumstances, or other matters that don’t address the core of the consumer experience.”

Reviews that don’t meet guidelines are generally removed.

Angelina Jolie Named Honorary Dame, Daniel Day-Lewis Receives Knighthood

LONDON (AP) — Angelina Jolie can add royal recognition to Hollywood stardom. The Oscar-winning actress has been named an honorary dame — the female version of a knight — by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II.

Jolie, a United Nations special envoy, received the honor on Friday for her work combating sexual violence in war zones. Jolie, who won a supporting actress Academy Award in 2000 for “Girl, Interrupted,” has spoken of scaling back her movie roles to focus on humanitarian work. She said that “to receive an honor related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to.”

Because she is not a British or Commonwealth citizen, Jolie won’t be entitled to use the title “dame” before her name. Previous U.S recipients of honorary knighthoods include director Steven Spielberg, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and former President Ronald Reagan.

Jolie, who was in London this week to co-host an international summit on sexual violence, was among hundreds of people recognized in the queen’s annual Birthday Honors List for services to their community or national life.

Most of the honors go to people who are not in the limelight — from soldiers and civil servants to academics and entrepreneurs — but there is always a sprinkling of famous names.

Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis was made a knight “for services to drama” and can now call himself Sir Daniel. The actor, who won Academy Awards for “My Left Foot,” ”There Will Be Blood” and “Lincoln,” said he was “entirely amazed and utterly delighted in equal measure.”There were damehoods for novelist Hilary Mantel, author of the prize-winning Tudor page-turners “Wolf Hall” and “Bring Up the Bodies,” and for fashion designer Zandra Rhodes.

Actress Maggie Smith, who plays the imperious Dowager Countess of Grantham on TV’s “Downton Abbey,” was made a Companion of Honor, an award limited to 65 people “of distinction.”

“Homeland” star Damian Lewis was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, or OBE.

The British actor said he was “very surprised but very happy” with the honor.

“I decided to do the very un-British thing of accepting the compliment,” Lewis said.

OBEs also went to Beatles expert and author Hunter Davies, musician Talvin Singh, and John Simpson, longtime editor of the Oxford English Dictionary.

In the field of science, there was a knighthood for physicist Thomas Kibble, whose work contributed to the discovery of the Higgs boson — the so-called “God particle.”

Among those honored for charity work was the late Stephen Sutton, a teenager who raised 4 million pounds ($ 6.8 million) while battling terminal cancer. Sutton, who died in May at age 19, was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire, or MBE.

Sylvia Lancaster, who founded a campaign against hate crime after her daughter, Sophie, was attacked and killed by a gang of youths in 2007 because of her Goth appearance, received an OBE.

Recipients covered a wide range of achievements, from confectioner Chantal Coady, honored “for services to chocolate making,” to civil service debt manager Barry Cox — “for services to debt” — and Arthur Dean, president of the Dwarf Sports Association. He was recognized for services to people with restricted growth and to disabled sport.

Britain’s honors are bestowed by the monarch, but recipients are selected by committees of civil servants from nominations made by the government and the public.

In descending order, the honors are knighthoods; Commander of the Order of the British Empire or CBE; OBE; and MBE. Knights are addressed as “sir” or “dame.” Recipients of the other honors have no title, but can put the letters after their names.
