‘Birdman’ Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu Addresses Immigration Reform, Donald Trump In Speech

As Donald Trump gave “Saturday Night Live” viewers a satirical sneak peak at what life in the United States would be like if he became president, Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu spoke candidly about what life is actually like for Mexicans living in Mexico and the U.S. today.

Iñárritu delivered his speech Saturday at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where he was being honored alongside artist James Turrell as part of the museum’s Art+Film Gala.

Below is a partial transcript of the “Birdman” director’s speech, which was originally published in English and in Spanish on Medium.com.

As a Mexican, I consider the honor I am receiving tonight a recognition to the whole Mexican community for their eminent hard work and vibrant cultural contributions made for years and years to the city of Los Angeles and the United States.

I have been extremely fortunate to shoot films around the world; sharing human experiences with different kinds of people, regardless of where we are from.

We are the only creatures on planet Earth that want to see ourselves in the mirror. Because we know we are the same, but we are different, we need to share. We need to see ourselves projected in other members of our species to, in turn, understand ourselves. Cinema, is that mirror. It is a bridge between the others and us.

Unfortunately, there are currently people proposing we build walls, instead of bridges. I must confess that I debated with myself, if I should bring up this uncomfortable subject tonight. But in light of the constant and relentless xenophobic comments that have been expressed recently against my Mexican fellows, it is inevitable.

These comments would be unacceptable if they were targeted against another minority, nevertheless, these millions of people do not have a voice or any rights  — even though they have lived here all of their lives.

These sentiments have been widely spread by the media without shame, embraced and cheered by leaders and communities around the U.S. The foundation of all this is so outrageous that it can easily be minimized as an “SNL” sketch, a mere entertainment, a joke.

But the words that have been expressed are not a joke. Words have real power; and similar words in the past have both created and triggered enormous suffering for millions of humans beings, especially throughout the last century.

Visit Medium.com to read Iñárritu’s speech in its entirety.

Infographic: How To Reform The Nation’s Prison System

With pressing issues such as overcrowding, overuse of solitary confinement, and the long-term incarceration of nonviolent offenders, many critics of the nation’s prison system are calling for sweeping reforms. Here are some of the proposals to improve the prison system:

  • Create thousands of productive jobs for inmates constructing more prisons
  • Use solitary confinement only in cases of severe guard anger
  • Slightly shorter prison sentences for those who were wrongfully convicted
  • Take preventative measures by working with kids to convince them not to grow up in areas with disproportionately high incarceration levels
  • Some more dogs to read to or train or whatever
  • Ease the emotional strain caused by inmates’ separation from their families by imprisoning their loved ones with them
  • Increase length of a life sentence to 150 years to really deter potential criminals
  • Avoid whole prison reform headache by solving nation’s education, mental health, drug problems instead

Real Alimony Reform

Those who follow me on Huffington Post and elsewhere are aware that I am an advocate for the reform of laws concerning alimony or spousal support. I have written on the topic in the past, most recently last October. At that time, I wrote about efforts underway to reform these laws in other states, and lamented about the lack of any initiative to do so being undertaken by the California legislature. In my almost thirty years of practicing family law, I have listened to clients complaining about the fact that they will be saddled with an unending obligation to pay support to their ex-spouses because they were married over ten years. In almost every instance, I have advised them that they need to take the issue up with the legislature. I am unaware of a client who has ever followed through on that advice.

However, I recently learned of someone (not a former client) who is taking action to see that laws regarding the duration of spousal support are reformed in California. Steve Clark is a resident of Orange County who, after his own divorce, decided that the law needed to be changed. To accomplish that, Steve wrote his own proposed bill seeking to end the concept of “lifetime” alimony. He worked with the Office of Legislative Counsel to ensure that his bill would be compliant with the California Constitution. He has created a website which has information regarding his proposed bill and how you can join the effort to support it. Steve needs 365,880 signatures from registered California voters by November 2, 2015 in order to have the bill placed on the ballot for the November 2016 general election.

Steve has been getting the media’s attention with his bill. On May 20th, the Los Angeles Times did an article on Steve and his quest to reform the law. Steve is hosting a number of “petition signing events” which are listed on his website. If you are interested in seeing these outdated laws changed, you may want to check Steve’s website and sign his petition. It’s refreshing to see that someone is actually taking the initiative of getting these laws changed in California.
