I nspired by Art: Rise to Power is a collection of art throughout the ages, around the story of David. This volume focuses on the decline of the House of Saul and David’s rise to the throne.  These amazing sculptures, paintings, etchings, and manuscripts inspired the author to write The David Chronicles , a series of three volumes, the first of which is Rise to Power, where she imagines the decline of the House of Saul and the rise of David. Besides being an artist and having worked as an architect, she taught art history, and this collection served as the basis for a study course analyzing the contrasts in viewpoints around the biblical story.  This collection is arranged not by artist, nor by artistic style or era, but rather by the story moment-by-moment, blow-by-blow, as imagined by various artists. Rembrandt, Ivan Schwebel, James Tissot, Rubens, William Blake, Gustave Doré, and Vallotton, to name but a few.

Publish Date: April 17, 2015

Publisher: Morgan Rice

Seller: Lukeman Literary Management

“An action packed fantasy sure to please fans of Morgan Rice’s previous novels, along with fans of works such as The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini…. Fans of Young Adult Fiction will devour this latest work by Rice and beg for more.” — The Wanderer, A Literary Journal (regarding Rise of the Dragons ) The #1 Bestselling series!  RISE OF THE VALIANT is book #2 in Morgan Rice’s bestselling epic fantasy series KINGS AND SORCERERS (which begins with RISE OF THE DRAGONS)!  In the wake of the dragon’s attack, Kyra is sent on an urgent quest: to cross Escalon and seek out her uncle in the mysterious Tower of Ur. The time has come for her to learn about who she is, who her mother is, and to train and develop her special powers. It will be a quest fraught with peril for a girl alone, Escalon filled with dangers from savage beasts and men alike—one that will require all of her strength to survive. Her father, Duncan, must lead his men south, to the great water city of Esephus, to attempt to free his fellow countrymen from the iron grip of Pandesia. If he succeeds, he will have to journey to the treacherous Lake of Ire and then onto the icy peaks of Kos, where there live the toughest warriors of Escalon, men he will need to recruit if he has any chance of taking the capital. Alec escapes with Marco from The Flames to find himself on the run through the Wood of Thorns, chased by exotic beasts. It is a harrowing journey through the night as he quests for his hometown, hoping to be reunited with his family. When he arrives, he is shocked by what he discovers. Merk, despite his better judgment, turns back to help the girl, and finds himself, for the first time in his life, entangled in a stranger’s affairs. He will not forego his pilgrimage to the Tower of Ur, though, and he finds himself anguished as he realizes the tower is not what he expects. Vesuvius spurs his giant as he leads the Trolls on their mission underground, attempting to bypass The Flames, while the dragon, Theos, has his own special mission on Escalon. With its strong atmosphere and complex characters, RISE OF THE VALIANT is a sweeping saga of knights and warriors, of kings and lords, of honor and valor, of magic, destiny, monsters and dragons. It is a story of love and broken hearts, of deception, ambition and betrayal. It is fantasy at its finest, inviting us into a world that will live with us forever, one that will appeal to all ages and genders.  Book #3 in KINGS AND SORCERERS will be published soon.   “If you thought that there was no reason left for living after the end of the Sorcerer’s Ring series, you were wrong. Morgan Rice has come up with what promises to be another brilliant series, immersing us in a fantasy of trolls and dragons, of valor, honor, courage, magic and faith in your destiny. Morgan has managed again to produce a strong set of characters that make us cheer for them on every page.…Recommended for the permanent library of all readers that love a well-written fantasy.” — Books and Movie Reviews, Roberto Mattos (regarding Rise of the Dragons ) “[The novel] succeeds—right from the start…. A superior fantasy…It begins, as it should, with one protagonist's struggles and moves neatly into a wider circle of knights, dragons, magic and monsters, and destiny.…All the trappings of high fantasy are here, from soldiers and battles to confrontations with self….A recommended winner for any who enjoy epic fantasy writing fueled by powerful, believable young adult protagonists.” — Midwest Book Review, D. Donovan, eBook Reviewer (regarding Rise of the Dragons ) “A plot-driven novel that’s easy to read in a weekend…A good start to a promising series.” –San Francisco Book Review (regarding Rise of the Dragons )

Norman Oppenheimer (Richard Gere) lives a lonely life in the margins of New York City power and money. Norman strives to be everyone’s friend, but his incessant networking leads him nowhere. Norman ends up befriending a young but charismatic politician Micha Eshel (Lior Ashkenazi) at a low point in his life. Three years later, the politician becomes an influential world leader. Flush with his newfound feeling of success, Norman attempts to use Eshel’s name to leverage his biggest deal ever: a series of quid pro quo transactions linking the Prime Minister to Norman’s nephew (Michael Sheen), a rabbi (Steve Buscemi), a mogul (Harris Yulin), his assistant (Dan Stevens), and a treasury official from the Ivory Coast. Norman’s kaleidoscopic plans soon go awry, creating the potential for an international catastrophe he must struggle to prevent. The new film by Academy Award® nominated director Joseph Cedar (Footnote) is a comic and compassionate drama of a little man whose downfall is rooted in a human frailty all too easy to forgive—a need to matter.

From #1 Bestselling author Morgan Rice comes a sweeping new epic fantasy series: RISE OF THE DRAGONS (KINGS AND SORCERERS—Book 1). Kyra, 15, dreams of becoming a famed warrior, like her father, even though she is the only girl in a fort of boys. As she struggles to understand her special skills, her mysterious inner power, she realizes she is different than the others. But a secret is being kept from her about her birth and the prophecy surrounding her, leaving her to wonder who she really is. When Kyra comes of age and the local lord comes to take her away, her father wants to wed her off to save her. Kyra, though, refuses, and she journeys out on her own, into a dangerous wood, where she encounters a wounded dragon—and ignites a series of events that will change the kingdom forever. 15 year old Alec, meanwhile, sacrifices for his brother, taking his place in the draft, and is carted off to The Flames, a wall of flames a hundred feet high that wards off the army of Trolls to the east. On the far side of the kingdom, Merk, a mercenary striving to leave behind his dark past, quests through the wood to become a Watcher of the Towers and help guard the Sword of Fire, the magical source of the kingdom’s power. But the Trolls want the Sword, too—and they prepare for a massive invasion that could destroy the kingdoms forever. Watch This Face: The Rise of Model Alisa Ahmann

alisa ahmann

While it can take years for a new face to become a fashion fixture, typically when success comes calling, it comes quick. Just five years ago, Alisa Ahmann and her sisters walked into a modeling agency in their hometown of Stuttgart, Germany, on a whim. Though the tall, blonde, and striking Ahmann sisters had never considered modeling until a family friend suggested it, much to their surprise, the four siblings were signed on the spot. “I was only sixteen, so visiting an agency seemed like a fun idea,” says Ahmann, “We all started modeling, just testing and doing small jobs locally.”

It didn’t take long for fashion’s biggest names to catch notice of Ahmann’s aristocratic bone structure and large, bright blue-green eyes; the model was tapped for a Calvin Klein Collection exclusive by casting directors, Maida Gregori Boina & Rami Fernandes last year. Given the brand’s reputation for launching new faces—models like Karlie Kloss and Toni Garrn began their careers as Calvin exclusives—the pressure was high. And keep in mind that Ahmann wasn’t just walking in the brand’s Fall show, she was opening it, an experience that hindsight has cast as larger than life. “I don’t even know how I handled opening Calvin that season,” says Ahmann, “at the time I didn’t realize how important it would be, but when I look back on it I realize it was the best start I could have possibly had.”

And that appears to be the truth: Ahmann has gone on to become one of the most in-demand models currently working. In less than a year she’s landed appearances in and covers for several international editions of Vogue, campaigns for brands like Gucci and Alberta Ferretti, and a continuous stream of runway appearances for labels like Hermès and Chloé. The whirlwind success has brought with it a wealth of new experiences, including the opportunity for transformation. “The Saint Laurent girl is very different from the Oscar de la Renta girl,” quips Ahmann (who walked for the latter last season), “every show offers you a chance to become someone different, to play with all these new characters. I love acting, so when they start changing my hair to different colors or putting me in really unusual outfits it just puts me in the best mood.” Her ability to be a quick-change artist has not gone unnoticed by photographers like Mario Testino and David Sims, either.

When it comes to the future, the model hopes to follow in the footsteps of fellow do-good catwalkers like Christy Turlington Burns and Natalia Vodianova, whose big careers are balanced by their active altruism. “In the future I want to devote more time to charity work,” says Ahmann, “I come from a close family, and I feel like I had a wonderful childhood. Every child deserves to grow up safely, so if I can do something to help children dealing with poverty, or homelessness that would be amazing.” Just as amazing as her career is turning out, don’t you think?

Yip Chi Chuan, a young martial and spiritual ascetic, must flee as the only home he has ever known, the ancient monastery of the Priests of K'un Lun, is destroyed by a newly ascendant extradimensional evil. Cast out and alone, Yip strikes out on a quest spanning the breadth of his home world of Ea'ae and into the greater macroverse beyond in an attempt to unseat an all-consuming Darkness rooted in his once vaunted Order's distant past. Will Yip, the last of his kind to walk the wide world beyond his fallen sanctuary, succeed where his mighty brethren failed in Ages past? Unfortunately for Yip, the answer appears all too clear…. Without the guidance and teachings of his lineage, pursued by malevolent supernatural agents of the Cabal, unable to fully defend himself in a world steeped in magic, his own quest may fail before it ever begins. Unfazed by his own limitations, guided by his inner vision and direct experience of the energies of life, the radiant chi suffusing and enlivening the world all around, he is determined to triumph where others have faltered. To win forward, he will need help… but first he must survive. A blend of Eastern mysticism and Western fantasy, Shadow's Rise is the first book of the Chronicles of the Fists , an epic trilogy recounting Yip's adventures against all odds. Revised second edition edited by Ashley Davis, Priestess of K'un Lun.

What the Grateful Dead Had to Do With the Rise of the Veggie Hot Dog

grateful dead hotdog

While most of us are busy beach-bumming and barbecue-hopping this weekend, a lucky few (well, around 70,000 per night) will be gathering at Chicago’s Soldier Field for one last long, strange trip with the Grateful Dead. The four living original members of the band—Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart—are reuniting for what they say is the final time, to perform three shows in honor of their 50th anniversary. (Phish’s Trey Anastasio will sit in for the late, great Jerry Garcia, who died in 1995.)

Even those of us who never really got beyond American Beauty (present company included) have some sense of the tailgating scene at a Dead show: lots of hippies in VW vans smoking pot, wearing tie-dye shirts and ponchos, and eating vegetarian food. This go-round, meat-repudiating Deadheads with the munchies will not have to BYO-Tofu or fill up on what’s available at makeshift parking lot stands; the concessionaires inside Soldier Field will be hawking their own veggie dogs and burgers.

For this, Deadheads have Gene Baur to thank. Baur, a vegan, is the president and cofounder of Farm Sanctuary, an animal rescue organization started in 1986. Dead fans may know him better as “the guy with the veggie dog stand.” In the late eighties, Baur and a partner would follow the Dead around for weeks at a time in a VW Westphalia van, selling vegan hot dogs, with a side of anti–factory farming literature, to the hordes of fans that camp out in venue parking lots.

Thirty years later, Farm Sanctuary has developed some more sophisticated outreach tactics—their supporters include Alec Baldwin, Jon Stewart, Ellen DeGeneres, and Ryan Gosling—and vegan food is, as we all know, far more ubiquitous. So when Baur found out that the Dead were reuniting, he called up Soldier Field and, with the help of Bob Weir, petitioned Aramark, the arena’s concession provider, to offer an expanded menu of vegan-friendly options. Aramark agreed.

Read on to hear more from Baur about the virtues of meatless meat, and how he helped put veggie dogs into the hands of Deadheads past and present.

Tell me how you came to sell veggie hot dogs at Grateful Dead shows. Are you a big fan?
I love the Grateful Dead. I never identified as a Deadhead exactly. I certainly enjoyed traveling and being part of the scene. Our van was a pretty well-known location. People would say, “I’ll meet you at the meatless hot dog stand.”

It was a large audience of people who were open-minded and interested in expanding their horizons. And hungry! Vegan food was part of that. It’s questioning the status quo, challenging assumptions. So we started selling veggie dogs. We also did education about factory farming.

Would you travel for long periods of time?
We would go for a couple weeks at the longest. Sometimes it would just be shows in a particular city. We were primarily up and down the East Coast. Once you were there, it was three days just parked in the parking lot. Then we would travel to the next show, sometimes in the middle of the night. I remember some evenings, traveling on country roads in the middle of nowhere, you would have van after van lined up, almost like [gridlock]. And then you’d go to a grocery store at 2:00 a.m. somewhere, and they’d be sold out of bread, or basic things. It was very interesting to be part of this traveling tribe.

Where did you get your supplies?
We bought the hot dogs from the Potomac Adventist bookstore mostly, the Seventh Day Adventist bookstore in Maryland. They’re a religion that promotes vegetarianism. We would get cases of these things. You could get the industrial size, with forty veggie dogs to a can. We loaded the van with so many veggie dogs one year that we actually broke an axel. We would stock up and then when we came into a town we could buy pita bread and mustard and ketchup and sauerkraut.

So you were depriving Seventh Day Adventists up and down the Eastern seaboard of their veggie dogs!
We may have been in some cases, yeah. Usually we’d order in advance. But when we came into a town, we would sometimes clean them out!

How many veggie dogs per day would you say you were eating in the late eighties?
Oh gosh! It’s very hard to know. But a lot. I would say there were probably some days where I would have eaten a dozen or more.

That’s insane.
I know, right. Those would have been the rare days. But we were on the road. We had these veggie dogs. We were selling them for twelve, sixteen hours at a time. We started in the mornings and went to well past midnight.

Why did you end up cutting it out?
Farm Sanctuary grew and we were at a point where selling the veggie dogs at the Grateful Dead shows was no longer the best way for us to do outreach and fundraising. We started doing more animal rights conferences. We started doing more media. More events. Those shows took a lot of time and energy.

So flash-forward almost thirty years, and suddenly veggie dogs are back in your life! How’d you end up getting them into Soldier Field for the Dead reunion shows?
As soon as I heard about the shows, I thought, we need to get vegan food into Soldier Field. And then I just started thinking: How do we get this done? I reached out to some friends who have connections at Aramark, which is the vendor. And at the same time called my friend Leilani Münter, who is a vegan race-car driver and also just happens to be the sister-in-law of Bob Weir. That was a big plus! Two months ago [Aramark] actually sent us a menu of what they were thinking of. It had all kinds of great vegan things on it, veggie dogs, and veggie burgers too.

Is this something you could ever have imagined in 1986?
Oh no! In 1986 we had no clue. It’s been something that we just take day by day. Small steps ultimately lead to big steps. But no, we did not have any notion that here in 2015, Soldier Field is going to be selling all kinds of vegan food. That even places like Burger King are looking to expand their vegetarian options around the world. You can go into Walmart or Safeway or Whole Foods and find a variety of plant-based milks instead of cow’s milk, for example. Back in the mid-eighties, it was very different. We have come an awful long way.

Will you be at Soldier Field this weekend?
I will not, unfortunately. Tickets were not easy to get, it was sold-out way in advance. It’s very popular, and I didn’t get on it early enough.

You should hit up the Seventh Day Adventist grocery store for a veggie dog this weekend, just for old time’s sake.
Or a case of them! Loma Linda Linketts were the brand. I haven’t eaten one in years. As time has gone by, I have tried to eat more whole foods and healthier foods. Now you can go to the mainstream grocery store and get Tofurkey or Field Roast. They make vegan dogs in a way that’s less processed. So I haven’t had a Loma Linda veggie dog in a while . . . which isn’t to say I wouldn’t.

Any parting words?
The bottom line is that the way we eat has profound impact on ourselves, on other animals, on the planet. It’s something most people do somewhat mindlessly. Focusing on our food choices, and eating in a way that’s in line with our values and interests, we can feel empowered and make a huge difference. There are wars happening: We sometimes scratch our head and think, what can I do about that? When it comes to our food systems, and the environmental harms caused, and the animal cruelty involved, and the human health risks, every day each of us can make choices that can make a difference. It can be very empowering! We’re for people living well, and feeling good and healthy. That’s part of the spirit of the Grateful Dead too. Those bumper stickers: “Feel Good.” “No Time To Hate.” You know?

Update: Mere hours after doing this interview, Baur called back to report that his friend Leilani Münter came through with an extra Grateful Dead ticket for him for Sunday night.

So now you’re going! How do you feel?
I feel pretty damn excited. It’s possibly the last Grateful Dead show of all time! It’s an epoch, almost, that this band has represented, a cultural movement that it’s been a critical part of. Farm Sanctuary was part of that movement.

This goes without asking, but are you psyched to eat a veggie dog?
Oh hell yeah! I’m going to get there early. I’ll have a chance to hang around eating all kinds of vegan food.

This interview has been condensed and edited.

The Rise of the Beach-Babe Selfie: Gisele Bündchen, Joan Smalls, and More

Photo: Courtesy of Elsa Hosk

If the face-mask selfie was Instagram’s winter beauty statement, with the arrival of beach season our feeds have been overflowing with another phenomenon: the perfect bikini shot. It’s a deceptively spontaneous snap—usually depicting some type of seaside frolicking—that showcases the sheer beauty of sun-bleached tendrils and a fresh-faced outdoor glow as much as athletic curves and bronzed limbs.

Bella Hadid and Hannah Bronfman accessorized their two-pieces with dried-in-the-breeze waves and skin-saving wide-brimmed hats, while Joan Smalls embraced a good figure with natural curls (and one-of-a-kind tan lines). Assuming the lotus position on a secluded stretch of sand, Gisele Bündchen was the picture of bombshell-haired serenity and Caroline Trentini and Stella Maxwell bounded down the beach to capture their sculpted physiques mid-air. Still, it was Elsa Hosk who offered up summer’s ultimate beauty enhancement—short of the right filter—by reminding us of one universal truth: Everyone looks better coming out of the water.

A Conversation with Devilskin’s Jennie Skulander, Nail, Paul Martin & Nic Martin

Mike Ragogna: Hey Devilskin, you’re already the #1 rock act in New Zealand. Do you really need to conquer the US as well? Don’t you want to start with Australia?

Jennie Skulander: Why not do both at once!

Paul Martin: We are really keen to explore the US, we have a great fan base here already and obviously its one of the hot spots for the world music industry. Australia is important to us as well but I think the US is way more exciting and more challenging!

MR: I notice a couple of Martins on the group roster. Is this like Duran Duran with all those unrelated Taylors? But if you’re family, do you still even like each other now that you’re the #1 rock band of New Zealand?

JS: We enjoy everyone’s company and still can tolerate snoring when touring…just.

PM: Haha. Love the Duran Duran analogy… But no, we have bonafide blood relations in the band. Nic our drummer is my son and playing and touring the world together is, for me, one of the best experiences a father and son could have. Jennie is also my sister-in-law and Nail is my evil twin.

Nic Martin: Playing music with my father is an experience to be cherished, and there’s no way I could pass it up or take it for granted in any way.

MR: What should US audiences fear most about Devilskin? Why “Devilskin,” oh by the way? Don’t you know we’re a Land of Puritans and won’t you consider changing your name to “Angelskin”? And who’s got the devil-iest skin in this band anyway?

JS: Yeah, I believe Paul is the most devilish. Well, he looks it. No need to fear us. We will have a cup of tea with you if you like. We chose the name Devilskin as everyone has a Devilskin–evil/good.

PM: All the US audiences need to fear from us is a good swift kick in the butt from a butt kicking rock act! Puritans, satanists, we love them all! No, we would never compromise our name to save offending someones beliefs. I guess my skin is the most Devilish with my full sleeve and back tattoos!

2015-05-05-1430787086-6073596-41b5r6dIeqL._SS280.jpg

MR: I couldn’t help but notice your album is titled We Rise. Do you mean like waking up in the morning or from the dead?

JS: We Rise means we have been left in the dark for so long and now we have risen and succeeded. And we will continue to rise!

PM: We mean, “Look out, our band is on the rise!” We are on a mission!

MR: How did the band congeal? Who influenced you other than Led Zeppelin?

JS: I knew the guys from playing with them years ago in my previous band. my influences are Deftones, Cohered and Cambria, Snot, Faith No More.

Nail: Pantera, AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses are a few of the bands that influenced me musically growing up.

PM: We all knew each other from the same town in New Zealand and all had a healthy respect for each others music and talents. Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Pantera, T-Rex, Ramones and lots more.

NM: I was lucky enough to be offered a fill-in role in 2011, and ended up being offered the full-time gig. My influences include Avenged Sevenfold, Periphery, Coheed and Cambria, to name a few.

MR: If you weren’t making music and being the #1 rock band in New Zealand, what would you all be doing in New Zealand? And which indigenous animals does New Zealand have that differ from Australia’s since we think you’re the same country and this would be a good moment to educate us about the differences?

JS: I would love to be doing something in health and fitness. And we have a kiwi bird in which Aussie doesn’t. Our rugby team is also better.

N: I would be driving heavy machinery, and crushing s***.

NM: I would be a useless vegetable without music; I’d be giving all my change to Nintendo games! Put simply: Aussie = Scary animals that will kill you. NZ = Peace & Love all ’round.

MR: Which US rock bands scare you the most and which one’s ass are you looking most forward to kicking?

N: No US bands scare me. We prefer to focus on our own adventure!

PM: I’m not scared of any other bands. Looking forward to kicking anyone’s ass that gets in the way! [wink]

MR: Does the fact that you’re playing and recording rock ever keep you up at night and if not, shouldn’t it? Can’t someone convince you to pick up acoustic guitars and sing pretty love songs?

PM: We love rock, we also love to write pretty acoustic songs. Our agenda is nothing more than quality, evocative music that people can believe in.

MR: What  advice do you have for new artists? No, really.

JS: Don’t give up!

N: Practice and take pride in your art

PM: Stick to your guns and don’t be afraid to use em!

NM: Don’t sit on your ass and watch someone else live your dream. Get up and make it happen yourself.

MR: What is it about Devilskin’s rock that will establish it beyond classic Led Zeppelin’s, your favorite band in the world as you established earlier?

PM: Quality music, heartfelt and genuine. Lots of emotion and dynamics. Heart and soul.

NM: I’ve been railroaded by Led Zep apparently! Paul summed it up.

MR: Now that the love affair is on between Devilskin and the US, will you forgive us when we wake up grumpy, which will be often and it’s a pretty horrible thing to have to put up with so you might want to plan that New Zealand exit strategy like right now?

JS: We love you. And we love your Taco Bell.

N: We love the US and look forward to an on-going relationship.

PM: We love the US unconditionally, we don’t care that you snore! We can’t wait to return and see more of this beautiful country!

NM: I’ll rub your back at night so you don’t wake up grumpy, as long as I get Taco Bell. Better yet, I’ll bring it back to New Zealand with me.

According to Tom Levin…

“‘Thunder On’ is inspired by the buffalo at my sister and her husband’s farm Little Pitchfork Ranch in Alaska. Ever since I first got in contact with the buffalo I’ve been very fascinated with the animal and that naturally lead me to Native Americans and their wisdom. I picture the song being a conversation between an older Indian and a younger person coming of age.

“I wrote the lyrics to ‘Thunder On’ together with Aimee Bobruk from Austin, Texas. We met for the first time through The House of Songs in conjunction with the Live At Heart music festival in Sweden in 2013.

“In the video, the shaved side of my face symbolizes civilization and the unshaved side symbolizes nature. It also resembles the look of buffalo hair.

“The video features footage from trips I’ve made to the following places: Falsterbo and Sodra Dellen in Sweden. The Alps in Switzerland. Mallorca in Spain. Little Pitchfork Ranch, The Matanuska Valley, Hatchers Pass and Homer all in Alaska. Toronto, Kansas City, New York and New Orleans. It also features footage from when a friend of mine crossed the U.S. on a motorcycle passing the Texas Mountain Trail and driving by wild fires in Colorado.”

A Conversation with Johnny Ray Miller

Mike Ragogna: Johnny, what motivated you to write When We’re Singin’–The Story of The Partridge Family and Their Music?

Johnny Ray Miller: My love of the music. The Partridge Family is remembered primarily as a TV show, and the music is so often overlooked. Nothing has been published on the subject, and I felt it was time someone took it on.

MR: What is it about the music that makes it special?

JRM: Well, it’s interesting because the very image by which this music was marketed and successfully sold to millions is very different than the musical roots that make up its origin.

MR: How so?

JRM: It was marketed as bubblegum music. But its identity is really Adult Contemporary or Easy Listening. The musicians who played on these albums were the same musicians remembered as The Wrecking Crew, who played on some of the biggest albums from that era. Guys like Hal Blaine, Max Bennett–who had deep, jazz roots–Dennis Budimir, Joe Osborn–intrinsic in the discovery of The Carpenters, and played on their albums. I mean, these guys played on everything! They were considered the best of the best–the first-call musicians that everyone wanted working on their albums. They played on albums by Sonny & Cher, The Beach Boys, The Mamas and The Papas, and many more.

MR: The songwriters were also some of the best pop writers of the era.

JRM: They were! Legendary songwriters worked on these songs, and most of these songs, probably 90% or more, were written and tailored specifically for the Partridge Family. There were very few cover songs. Guys like Tony Asher, who produced The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds wrote for The Partridge Family. Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, who are noted as some of the greatest songwriters of all-time also contributed songs. Paul Anka wrote “One Night Stand” for the Partridge Family. L. Russell Brown who had just come off his big hit with “Knock Three Times” penned six songs for The Partridge Family and his first one, “I Woke Up In Love This Morning” was thefourth Top 20 single and sold in the millions. His next big hit was “Tie A Yellow Ribbon ‘Round the ‘Ole Oak Tree.” Mike Appel and Jim Cretecos began their early career with The Partridge Family, having written the band’s second single, “Doesn’t Somebody Want to Be Wanted” which hit #6 on Billboard and #1 on Cash Box. These are the guys who left The Partridge Family gig to produce the up and coming Bruce Springsteen. The late, great Gerry Goffin also wrote at least four songs for The Partridge Family!

MR: Gerry Goffin is one of the greats.

JRM: Yes! He wrote the third Partridge Family single, “I’ll Meet You Halfway,” which went to #9 on the Billboard charts in early summer 1971.

MR: How many different songwriters are credited to The Partridge Family music?

JRM: Over fifty. Talents like Diane Hildebrand, who was one of the only female songwriters signed to Screen Gems at the time, wrote songs for the Partridge Family, including the first season theme song, and title of my book “When We’re Singin’.” Jack Keller was another successful songwriter who worked on a few Partridge Family cuts. He had a great reputation for writing film scores, and music for television. Bobby Hart also wrote a lot of songs for The Partridge Family. Hart, most famous for his work as producer/songwriter on The Monkees actually wrote more Partridge Family songs than any other songwriter with the exception of producer Wes Farrell who partnered with all these guys from time to time.

Johnny Cymbal and Peggy Clinger wrote for both Partridge Family and David Cassidy’s solo albums. They were young, singer/songwriters who were launching the early phase of their career during this time. Terry Cashman and Tommy West wrote eight songs plus a theme-song outtake for the show. These two guys were really impressive music guys who had worked with Wes Farrell prior to The Partridge Family and found the project interesting, so they jumped on board. They were also producing Jim Croce during the early ’70s as well. I mean, the list really does go on and on.

MR: Tony Romeo was probably the most associated songwriter with The Partridge Family, his having written “I Think I Love You.”

JRM: Right. Tony Romeo was a genius. He had already been writing music in the ’60s, and he was heavily influenced by old Italian melodies. He loved the work of Joni James and some of the early ’50s artists. Many of his Partridge Family songs have these kinds of influences. He also knew how to connect with the inner workings of David Cassidy. He intrinsically knew how to write for him–not just for the sound of his voice, but for the inner expression that comes to life in this music. David Cassidy has a rich, versatile voice that was, and still is, incredibly underated.

MR: Why underated?

JRM: Because of the marketing image. The marketing image was so strong, that even when David Cassidy tried to break it himself, once by posing nude for Rolling Stone, it still didn’t put a dent in it. Yes, little girls were in love with him, and many young boys wanted to be him, but the longevity of his career and talent comes from the quality of his voice and this music. It holds up.

MR: Why do you think The Partridge Family songs hold up?

JRM: Put a Partridge Family CD in your player with five or so other CDs sometime when you are having a party, or a casual get-together with friends. Don’t tell them what you put in that player. I guarantee you they will say “I like that–who is that?” That’s the true test. It stands on its own after all these years. David Cassidy has a voice that is instantly recognizable to that demographic. He has rich vocal tones, and layered interpretations to his recordings that come off complex at times, because David himself was complex.

MR: Would you say that today the marketing image has been broken, or is it still intact? I mean, what happens after you tell them who it is? They laugh, right?

JRM: That’s right. They say “no way!” But all of us who were 8, 9 and 10 at that time are now 53, 54, and 55, so it processes differently. We are all nostalgic now. When we look back at our childhoods we are especially attached to that part which holds the test of time. The Partridge Family music does that. I have researched every single album–there were eight studio albums and two hits packages–and every single song, and I have put together commentaries for each album and song. Thanks to the input of guys like John Bahler, who wrote all the vocal arrangements on every single album, and the late, great Mike Melvoin, who did all the arrangements on the music, we now have the first book on the music of The Partridge Family.

MR: Is your book all music or does it cover some of the television side as well?

JRM: The television story is also in this book. The show had more celebrity guest appearances than any other show of that era, including Ray Bolger–the Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz, Academy Award winners Dean Jaggar and Jodie Foster. Shirley Jones and the other cast members were like a family, and they have great memories of the episodes and the show as well. Keeping the content fresh, I spoke with all the producers who worked on this show, many of whom have never been interviewed about their Partridge Family days, and they have great memories and fun stories to tell. Producer Paul Junger Witt has great memories of the show and the music. Even the bus!

MR: Ah, the classic Partridge Family bus. What ever happened to it?

JRM: That’s in the book, too. And there’s a fun twist to that story! I don’t want to give it all away, right?

MR: John, when is this book coming out?

JRM: December is the plan. This fall is the 45th Anniversary of The Partridge Family debut. We are running a campaign on Kickstarter.com as we speak to try and fund the publication of the book. Kickstarter is a new model for getting your creative projects off the ground. I have been told that it is changing the publishing industry drastically.

MR: Kickstarter for publishing?

JRM: Because things are getting funded! New and different things are getting published. When We’re Singin’ was actually just chosen as a “Staff Pick” among their 600-700 daily book projects.

MR: Where can people find more information on this?

JRM: Go to the website https://WhenWereSingin.com. It’s all there–how to get the book, when to get the book, the progress on Kickstarter.com… It’s all there.

ZAK SMITH’S “HAVE YOU LOOKED OUTSIDE” EXCLUSIVE

According to Zak Smith…

“There are many things I’m apathetic about. Apathy can be a statement of independence, it can be a statement of protest against a system or group that wants something from you or wants you to think or act in a certain way. Trying to force yourself to feel emotions that you don’t feel is a dead end street. There’s a quote I like by Charles Bukowski where he says, ‘To feign real emotion, yours or the world’s, is of course unforgivable.’ It’s a bit harsh, but a good line; it speaks to the broader point that there is certainly something dispossessing about pretending to care about something when you don’t.

“There are things not to be apathetic about. To see police officers choke a black man to death with no repercussions, to see black people’s lives repeatedly held as cheap by law enforcement throughout the country, is in fact to be addressed directly. What they are saying is, ‘We will do this forever. You are not brave enough or smart enough to do anything but watch.’ The more power and control invested in the hands of the few, the less sum total of justice there is in the world. To be apathetic about people forcing a steady stream of manipulation and smiling at you, and not be enraged is to give up. And not just politically, it’s to concede and accept a dreadful vision of reality.”

First Indian artist at Coachella marks electronica rise

First Indian artist at Coachella marks electronica riseOnce an afterthought for many international artists, India has quickly emerged as a hotbed for electronic dance music — and, in a sign of its growth, the first Indian act has played the influential Coachella festival. If not for DJ Ritesh D'Souza's shout-out to an Indian friend, it is unlikely that most at the show recognized the duo's origin. Bandmate Tara Mae, a classically trained US pianist who met D'Souza while living in Mumbai, said the sound "has futuristic elements. "We became big fish in a small pond, kind of, doing the same clubs with the same people," D'Souza told AFP.

The Rise of the Real Girl: Air-Dried Hair, Fresh Skin, and Luxe Lip Balm Are Having a Moment

Photographed by Kevin Tachman

When the annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show touched down in London this past December in a flurry of feathers, lace, and bombshell ombré hair extensions, it was the first time in recent memory that a barrel wave had been spotted on any runway from New York to Paris. It offered a stark contrast to spring shows like Rodarte, where coiffeuse Odile Gilbert asked every model how she wanted to wear her hair “in real life” before settling on a loose, no-fuss style that can best be described as artfully undone—barely done, even.

At Louis Vuitton, where hairstylist Paul Hanlon did little more than tuck a few loose strands behind the ear here and there, models like Jean Campbell and Amanda Murphy looked like they’d popped by the show on their day off. And at Christian Dior, “unfettered” was the directive designer Raf Simons gave to Guido Palau, who used an oil-infused shampoo and let hair air-dry for a “straight, but not too straight, de-frizzed, but not overly blown-out” effect. Girls on the runway looked more like girls on the street—and that was the point.

“My idea of the chicest woman now is someone who comes in with hair just above the collarbone, the ends untouched, and with color so subtle you can’t tell anything’s been done,” says Palau. “It’s a Céline attitude—that everything should be effortless,” he says, referring to the cultish label designed by Phoebe Philo and embodied by the ultimate icon of cool, model Daria Werbowy.

That means that this season, the bouncy salon blowout has been replaced with a halo of flyways, tinted moisturizer, or a swipe of lip balm is the only makeup you need, and jeans—high-waisted at Rodarte and Saint Laurent; tight, black, and sexy at Givenchy; slouchy and cuffed at the ankle at Alexander Wang—are suddenly among the most coveted pieces in your closet. Some might call it normcore; others just call it real. It’s inspired by the effortless sensibility of social media and street style stars like Charlotte Gainsbourg, Lily Aldridge, Kate Moss, and Caroline de Maigret, the French model and music producer whose rumpled-chic hair has inspired a fan blog of its own.

Hedi Slimane has been a pioneer of real girl (via rock girl) chic since arriving at Saint Laurent. Didier Malige, Slimane’s go-to backstage stylist, credits the French-born, L.A.-based designer’s European sensibility for a mentality that values attitude over excessive primping. “I don’t even think there are blowdry bars in Paris,” Malige jokes. “They’re just not cool.” He often sees Slimane’s carefully cast corps of models about a day or two in advance of the designer’s show, so he can give them a trim, or a long fringe that “looks like its always been there” before the lights come up on the runway. Think of it as less of a haircut, and more of a relaxed hair attitude.

Of course, for the real real girl—the kind for whom walking a runway is not her day job—keeping it casual, while polished, can prove more of a challenge. “Actual real women often don’t know if their hair looks natural, or if it looks like a mess, so they just have a blowout,” says Palau sympathetically of navigating the fine line between undone and sloppy. For Gilbert, it starts with how you cleanse your hair. “To make this kind of thing work, one day you shampoo and condition, then maybe one day you only do conditioner, and then the next day only shampoo at the roots,” she says. Styling creams, like Phyto 7 or Tresemmé Perfectly Undone, and the increasingly popular texturizing sprays, like Bumble and Bumble. Prep, Oribe Dry, or Redken Wind Blown 05—applied to dry lengths—add grit and pliable hold.

It’s a stylistic sweet spot that extends to makeup, too. British makeup artist Lucia Pica describes the matte skin and groomed brows she created backstage at both Roksanda Ilincic and Peter Pilotto’s spring collections as “beauty that is so minimal that it feels as if the girl has done it herself. There is makeup there,” she insists, “it’s just stripped down.”

Pica, with her dark, brow-sweeping bangs, creamy pale skin, and signature swipe of Chanel Rouge Noir lipstick—pressed on with her fingertips—may be her own best advertisement for the season’s refreshing and realistic new approach. “My personal routine takes about seven minutes,” she says, detailing the process by which she blends a lightweight foundation with “a lot” of moisturizer, and then smudges a balm over espresso eyeliner and some taupe shadow at her lash-line. When she applies her mascara, she does so just at the root of the lashes, for a hint of definition. It’s a system she has developed as much for aesthetic as practical purposes (to navigate her 7:00 a.m. call times), a strategy other busy women will surely appreciate. “We don’t want to give up the glamour,” says Pica, “we just want to do it fast.” That’s as real as it gets.
