‘The Front Runner’ charts implosion of Gary Hart campaign

“The Front Runner” captures what turned out to be pivotal moment in politics and media, zeroing in on the moment when the look-the-other-way mentality about candidates’ personal indiscretions forever changed. At its core, too, is how that shift torpedoed the 1988 presidential run by Gary Hart, played with convincing indignation by Hugh Jackman.

‘Blade Runner’ is long but undeniably ambitious

“Blade Runner 2049” boasts such an enticing assortment of elements it’s frustrating that they aren’t assembled into a movie that fully delivers on its promise. Yet despite Ryan Gosling, a striking visual template and Harrison Ford reprising the role he played in the 1982 sci-fi classic, glitches mar this undeniably ambitious but drawn-out exercise.

Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) prowls the steel-and-microchip jungle of 21st Century Los Angeles. He's a "blade runner" stalking genetically made criminal replicants. His assignment: kill them. Their crime: wanting to be human. The story of Blade Runner is familiar to countless fans. But few have seen it like this. Because this is director Ridley Scott's own vision of his sci-fi classic. This new version omits Deckard's voice narration, develops in slightly greater detail the romance between Deckard and Rachael (Sean Young) and removes the "uplifting" finale. The result is a heightened emotional impact: a great film made greater. Most intriguing of all is a newly included unicorn vision that suggests that Deckard may be a humanoid. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Is Deckard a replicant? As with all things in the future, you must discover the answer yourself.

Champion Runner Suzy Favor Hamilton On Why She Became A Vegas Escort

How could a former Olympian — also a wife and mother — end up as a high-priced Vegas call girl? In an interview with Dr. Phil airing Tuesday, world-class runner Suzy Favor Hamilton describes what led her to live a secret life as Vegas escort Kelly Lundy, pulling in $ 600 an hour to make any man or woman’s fantasy come true, and getting an even bigger rush than crossing an Olympic finish line could offer.

“It started on our 20th anniversary,” she explains in the video above. “We wanted to do something fun, crazy. Work on a bucket list.” So she says she and her husband arranged a trip to Las Vegas, where they would jump out of an airplane. But there was more. “We decided, probably more me, that we wanted to make this fantasy that people talk about come true, so we arranged a threesome,” says Hamilton, who says she was taking medication for depression that she says made her hyper and reduced her inhibitions.

“It was a life-changing moment after the threesome,” says Hamilton. “It was euphoria. I felt so uplifted and wanted to do it again … I knew I was going to come back to Vegas and have some more fun.”

Ultimately, she joined a Vegas escort agency and says she continued getting a high from being paid for sex. “I didn’t want it to stop. I wanted more sex,” she says. “I had a disease, and I chose sex as the fuel to make me happy.”

She tells Dr. Phil in the video above, “You have to understand: The money part of being an escort fueled my mania. It was just another way, another part of the risky behavior that a bipolar person likes. I had no idea I was bipolar. Doing anything sexual also heightens the riskiness and makes the feeling better and better.”

Favor Hamilton reveals that she had close to 100 clients, some of whom would pay $ 6,000 for an overnight stay and offer generous tips. “I got tons of gifts,” says Hamilton. “I got diamonds, I got furs, and I got Louis Vuitton purses. It was unbelievable the things I was getting, fueling my mania, adding to that rush and that riskiness.”

On Tuesday’s episode of Dr. Phil, hear from Suzy’s husband. Did he agree to his wife becoming an escort? Check here to see where you can watch.

Brooks-sponsored Runner Nick Symmonds Nixes Nike; Aims to Speak at SxSW

Whether an act of will, independence or marketing genius, the recent decision by Brooks Running-sponsored runner Nick Symmonds not to compete with the Nike-sponsored U.S. team at this month’s IAFF World Championships still has people talking.
The entrepreneurial runner earned a spot on the team that will compete in Beijing starting Aug. 22, after winning the 800 meters at the U.S. Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. in June. But unlike his fellow American world championship qualifiers, Symmonds balked at signing the Statement of Conditions that would have required that he wear the designated USTAF team uniform for all team functions, while in China.
A Brooks spokesman declined to say Wednesday whether Symmonds consulted with any of the company’s executives before he went public with his decision. Nor was there any indication from the Seattle-based $ 500 million brand how he might be used in marketing down the line. Symmonds did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
In its 101st year in business, Brooks Running, a Berkshire Hathaway-owned company, has a reputation for pitching friendlier, more approachable branding than juggernauts like Nike and Adidas. Brooks’ “Run Happy” campaign includes advertising and international events. Symmonds’ independent thinking may be something Berkshire Hathaway’s

Mile Runner: Ed Droste Goes to India!

Photo: Courtesy of Ed Droste

Every year, my dear friends Philippe von Borries, Piera Gelardi, Kate Thompson, and Hisham Bharoocha and I use our saved miles to take an annual trip to a far-off destination, usually in Asia. In the past we’ve explored Myanmar, Hong Kong, and Thailand, and this past New Year’s, we decided to go to India. India had been high on my list of places to visit for years, and I was beyond thrilled at the chance to not only experience a new country and culture, but to spend a good, quality two weeks exploring a far-flung land with some of my best friends.

It turned out that the easiest way for me to get there with miles was on two overnight flights with British Airways: one from L.A. to London, then one from London to Mumbai. I met up with Philippe and Piera at Heathrow and we arrived together, a full day ahead of Kate and Hisham. We truly hit the ground running, without taking a moment to process jetlag, so giddy we were to be there. We wandered around contentedly, exploring and watching dozens of kids and adults playing cricket at the Oval Maidan, not far from our hotel. I couldn’t believe how vibrant the city was. People were so amazing and friendly, helping us with directions to the market, where we saw tons of colorful vegetable stands and textiles (and a slightly depressing “pet section” of caged animals that we passed by briskly). As the sun set on our first half day—it had felt like three—we found our way to the colorfully lit Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station, formerly called the Victoria Terminus, where we took in the organized chaos of the afternoon commute.

After an amazing meal at Mahesh Lunch Home, we finished off the evening by greeting Kate and Hisham for a drink, then went to bed early, in anticipation of the following day’s many plans. First up, we were dying to see the insanely complicated dabbawala lunch-delivery system, where hundreds of men (with a seemingly indecipherable code system that is studied around the world) pick up homemade lunches and deliver them to thousands of workers across the city. We went from train station to train station only to discover that it was a national holiday, and that, sadly, we wouldn’t be able to witness the spectacle. (One more reason to go back!) So we decided to visit the Dhobi Ghat, a giant facility where generations of families work in rather rough conditions to do the city’s laundry—for individuals, hospitals, hotels, even clothing brands. Most tourists look down from a bridge that crosses over the complex, but we decided to venture deeper in and ended up taking an amazingly interesting tour of the facility, meeting people and witnessing the intricate maze of washrooms, sterilization areas, and more. It was really mind-blowing how much laundry comes in and out of the Dhobi Ghat each day.

Later on we had lunch at the delicious Swati Snacks spot, then wandered over to the not highly touristic Banganga bathing tank, a picturesque pool where people bathe. We spent a good hour weaving through streets around it, befriending stray dogs and hanging with kids, before our last stop of the day: the Haji Ali Dargah mosque. At low tide there is a walkway that opens up and allows you to enter, passing by hundreds of vendors. It was very crowded but also tranquil. We seemed to be quite the novelty there—for a good 30 minutes, locals visiting the mosque asked us to pose for pictures. It was an amazingly surreal juxtaposition. Next to the mosque was an unfinished structure with open walls, four floors full of people eating and hanging out, and an aerial view of people playing on rocks below.

With New Year’s Eve approaching, we flew to an airport near Jaipur, then drove an hour or so to the small of village of Samode, which was absolute magic. We spent hours wandering the streets and talking with locals. Our hotel, the Samode Palace, was an amazing spot, filled to the brim with historical furniture and murals. We rang in the New Year at a party for the hotel and village, full of optimism and excitement for the coming year. 2014 had been a trying one for a lot of people I knew, and I was suddenly putting a lot of stock into the concept of a New Year new start. Our first day of 2015 was one of the most magical, but I’ll get to that in the next column. . . .
