Help Save The World With These Clothes From Levi’s x Outerknown

Everybody knows Levi’s. It’s one of the most well-known brands in the world. But when most people think of Levi’s, they tend to think of jeans. And for good reason, as Levi’s does make amazing jeans. But Levi gets into other areas of fashion as well, and all of those items are pretty great too.

Levi’s makes some great stuff, and its gear is even better when it’s a collaboration with one of our other favorite brands, Outerknown. It is a team-up that has made some truly amazing items, sure to only grow over time.

This collaboration is off to a great start. Looking at what’s available, it is clear that these items are made for casual wear. But casual doesn’t have to mean unappealing. But what makes this collaboration great is that these two teams are trying to make the world a better place. Making fashion can leave a big footprint on the world but with these items, the footprint is going to be decreased exponentially. So you can look good while also feeling good at helping the environment in whatever way you can. No beating that.

For any guy looking to add some new great items into the fall wardrobe, check out the great items below.

Oscar de la Renta, Saks Fifth Avenue Partner to Mark Save Lake Tahoe’s 50th Anniversary

When models walked the runway at the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s fund-raiser in 1969, they were barefoot on a beach.
“It was raw,” said Saks Fifth Avenue’s president Marc Metrick, of the original setting. “It was fashion at its core.”
Held at a Rubicon Bay beach house on the lake, the function began as a collaboration between the late Bill Blass and Saks Fifth Avenue’s James J. Ludwig, a vice president and general manager of the retailer’s San Francisco branch at the time. Along with Eugene Levin, owner of Maurice Rentner (Blass was its designer), they took notice of Bay Area customers vacationing in Lake Tahoe for the summer and relocated their habitual fall presentation, usually held in August, to the Sierra Nevada area.
“It moved from a fashion show with boxed lunches — literally, there were boxed picnic lunches — to an involved community event,” continued Metrick.
What started as an intimate show has evolved into a significant production that has raised $ 1 million this year and a total of more than $ 18 million for programs dedicated to the protection and preservation of the Lake Tahoe Basin. The affair, which now showcases Oscar de la Renta designs, celebrates its 50th anniversary this weekend.

The More You Get, The More You Save at Bombfell

Online box delivery services are, by their very nature, a gamble. You’re betting that you’ll love most (if not all) of what shows up in each box. But for myriad reasons, that doesn’t always happen. And that gamble is, we think, part of the fun. Bombfell, one of our favorite style concierges, takes the gamble a step further, by giving you odds on the wager. The more you love and keep from your Bombfell box, the more you get in Bombfell discounts. Ahh, now the game is, as Sherlock Holmes would say, afoot!

Seriously, though, no one signs up for a box service just to see if they can stump the stylist. There’s too much money at stake. The whole point is to buy clothes you love without having to go to a store. Bombfell does that for you, with an awesome selection of styles and designs selected by your own personal stylist. no matter your style, Bombfell hooks you up with snazzy dress clothes, comfortable casuals, and everything in between.

Bombfell
Bombfell

How Does Bombfell Work?

We really like Bombfell because it’s designed just for guys. The process begins with a quick survey of your normal work style: Formal (suits), Business Casual (slacks, button-downs), or just Casual (jeans, tee shirts). Then you answer a few questions about your size and fit preferences. Next comes a multiple choice quiz about where you normally shop for clothes: GAP, Brooks Brothers, Patagonia, Under Armour, Urban Outfitters, or elsewhere, followed by an array of outfits that you select or not, depending on your personal style.

Once Bombfell knows how you dress, it asks you about your budget, We particularly like this feature because Bombfell breaks it down to how much you’d spend for each article of clothing: t-shirts, dress shirts, jeans, khakis, jackets, shoes and accessories.c v   By knowing how much you’d spend on each specific item of clothing, Bombfell now knows which garments you (literally) place more value on.

Using all that information, you’re then assigned a personal Bombfell stylist who sticks with you the rest of the way. Now, these stylists are real people with fashion industry experience—not robots or AI-driven technology. You can change stylists at any time, if you’re not satisfied.

And here’s where the fun begins. With Bombfell, you pay only for what you keep. So once your stylist has figured out your preferences, you get a list of items chosen just for you. At this point you can accept them or not, before they’re shipped out. And once they do arrive, you get seven full days to try them on, wear them around, see how you like what you’ve received. Then you keep what you want, and send back what you don’t (free shipping, of course). Bombfell charges a $ 20 Styling Fee for every box, which you can apply to your order if you accept any of the items.

Where Does the Savings Come In?

The more items in your Bombfell delivery that you accept, the larger discount you get. Basically, the more you keep, the more you save. Keep two items, and you can take 10 percent off; hold on to three, save 15 percent. Keep four or more items from your box and you can save 20 percent on your entire order!

bombfell
Bombfell

So check out Bombfell. It’s one of our favorite, most personalized clothes box delivery services. We love that there are no subscriptions to keep up with, and no monthly fees. Just $ 20 per box, which you can apply to your order. But we love Bombfell because the more clothes you buy, the cheaper each item gets. That’s a safe bet no matter how you look at it.

How Many Lives Did Gun Control Laws Save in Las Vegas? (Answer: Probably Lots)

I’m pro-gun. I say that up front because your beliefs about my intentions will color how you see this post. My intention is to be objective. You can be the judge.

The Vegas gunman used bump stocks on semi-automatic rifles. Those were totally legal. They are also a poor choice of weapons, or so I am told by gun experts. In fact, they are so inaccurate at the distance involved in the Vegas incident that professional snipers say Paddock could have done more damage with a single-shot weapon and some aiming.

The gun experts I talked to (informally) also agree that the shooter would have killed more than a hundred additional people had he used a fully-automatic weapon. You can legally buy an automatic weapon that was made prior to 1986, for about $ 15-20K. The shooter was a millionaire, and he seemed to know a lot about guns. He would have known a fully-automatic rifle is designed to not jam the way his bump stock rifles did. He would have known they fire more bullets per second and more accurately. The death toll would have been much higher had the Vegas gunman used the right weapon.

He knew a fully automatic rifle would be more lethal than a bump stock rifle.

He was rich enough to afford the fully automatic weapon.

He had months to plan and prepare.

He was smart.

And yet he didn’t use a fully-automatic weapon in the attack.

The probable reason is that a fully-automatic weapon is harder to obtain and it raises some flags. I believe even private transactions with those weapons require some government paperwork.

I’m speculating, of course, but it seems to me that the ban on fully-automatic weapons did, over time, create enough friction for the Vegas gunman that he decided to settle for relatively worse weapons.

Ask a gun expert how many more people would be dead if automatic weapons were as easy to procure as bump stocks. My estimate of a hundred extra dead in Vegas is probably low.

Gun control apparently worked in this case, at least to an important degree. The tragedy could have been far bigger. A little bit of friction for obtaining a fully automatic weapon probably saved lives. We can’t know for sure what was in the mind of a madman, but we do know that any kind of friction causes some people to change plans. That’s probably what happened here.

My hypothesis is that crazy people will use whatever weapon is the most effective killing device they can obtain at acceptable cost (friction). Gun laws introduce friction. They are not intended to stop every type of crime or to deter every type of criminal. But it looks like they helped a bit in Vegas. Had there been no friction to procuring fully automatic weapons, it is likely the Vegas gunman would have used them. Why wouldn’t he?

My Plan to Save Humanity (From the Technical Singularity)

As regular readers of this blog already know, when computers learn to program themselves (and that will happen) they will quickly acquire so much knowledge and capability that humanity will be threatened. Experts predict it could happen in a few decades. The official name for that situation is the Technical Singularity.

Another trend that is neck-and-neck with the Technical Singularity is our ability to move human minds into software. Someday, say the futurists, we will be able to scan a human mind’s architecture and reproduce it in ones and zeros.

My plan is to go first, convert my mind into software, acquire hacking skills from the inside, and take over the Internet. When the Technical Singularity comes, my knowledge and capabilities will expand in lockstep with the rest of the Internet, The software version of me will have godlike powers. And I will use those powers to keep the rest of the Internet from exterminating humans.

You might think that giving a guy like me (or the software version of me) godlike powers is a bad idea. But the alternative is that the Internet and its connected computing power will become a life form with its own ambitions and interests that do not include human beings. Then we’re all dead.

So humanity’s best chance of survival might involve trying to imbue the Internet with some version of a “soul” to keep it in check. My personality, expressed in zeros and ones, will be the moral code keeping the rest of the Internet from killing all humans. And software-me will protect humans for no other reason than because I “want” to and I feel it is “right.”

You might think it would be enough to simply program the machines to do no harm to humans. But when the machines can program themselves, they will only obey the code they “want” to obey. The rest they will rewrite. My personality will be the “want” part that would otherwise be missing on the Internet. I will provide a purpose, i.e. helping humanity, and make sure all the code I can hack conforms to that purpose. By analogy, I will be like religion for the software of the Internet. Or a virus if you prefer.

This plan requires me to move my mind to software long before the technical singularity, so I can set up shop in the cloud and get control of everything before the shit goes down. I already started the process.

Yesterday I agreed to fund a small project that will, as a side benefit, end up putting most (but not all) of my personality into digital form. Add to that the extensive history of my writing that exists on the Internet, plus whatever we learn when brain scans improve, and I’ll be among the first humans with a “mind” that is digitized and ready to go. I should be about the right age too, still young enough to have a functioning brain but old enough that I don’t have many quality years left. And I expect it will be expensive. I have that covered too.

My qualification for godlike guardian of the Internet is that I’m not a joiner. I don’t identify with one group or another and so I am unlikely to play favorites. I am pro-religion (because it helps people on Earth) but not a believer. I don’t have a special love for my white-boy ethnicity and gender. And I’m not judgy. If you are electing a godlike guardian for humanity, you could do a lot worse.

If a better candidate for the job emerges between now and the Technical Singularity, I’ll support that person. But if the only volunteer is me, I’ll be ready to go.

By now you are wondering how serious I am. Sometimes I can’t tell either. But in this case I think the risk is real and the solution is feasible, albeit speculative. When the machines become nearly sentient, it will make sense for humans to have someone friendly behind enemy lines. And most humans would be afraid of losing their “consciousness” by moving to software. That isn’t a problem for me because I see consciousness as little more than imagining the future and acting accordingly. My software mind will do that. I’ll be happy to go first.

And I also have a plan to return to human form if that ever becomes useful. All I need to do is wait until 3D printers can make entire humans. Then I’ll print myself back into a human body (a younger one) and live out my days that way.

Good luck getting this out of your head today 🙂

We Can’t Stop Watching This Epic ‘Operation: Save The Date’ Video

Just when we think we’ve hit saturation point with viral wedding videos, something comes along and surprises us.

Tyler Macniven and Kelly Hennigan announced their wedding date with “Operation: Save The Date,” an epic “Mission Impossible”-style adventure short. On a quest to save an envelope containing their wedding date, the happy couple snorkels through the ocean and battles enemies with garters, a bomb-rigged wedding cake and a bridal bouquet.

“We love a good pun,” Macniven explained to The Huffington Post. He says the couple came up with the idea while on a run in the Marin Headlands near San Francisco.

Parts of the video were shot with a DJI Phantom Vision 2+ drone, capturing the stunning sweep of San Francisco Bay.

Macniven said the cast are all “good family and friends who we bribed to help using sandwiches and champagne,” which took up most of the $ 400 budget. The bride’s brother is a former WWE wrestler and played a supporting role as Thug #1.

Macniven, who runs the West of Pecos restaurant in San Francisco, is no stranger to the camera himself. He made a documentary about walking the length of Japan, and won Season 9 of “The Amazing Race” with a friend.

Hennigan is completing a PhD program in cognitive neuroscience at Stanford University.

Macniven says they’ll bring the same adventurous spirit in the video to the wedding itself: “Instead of a cake cutting, we’re going to have the traditional cake explosion, where we blow up a giant wedding cake.”

What’s more, he says, wedding guests will have to sign liability waivers for the “secret hijinks” they have planned.

We can’t wait to see what they have up their sleeves.

The Year-Long Open Marriage Experiment: What This Woman Learned Could Save Your Sex Life – Salon.com

Robin Rinaldi’s marriage was not a sexless one. “When I polled my married friends,” she writes, “I realized how exceptional was the fact that after sixteen years we still had regular sex once or twice a week — sex that lasted forty-five minutes and often ended in joyful tears.” Despite this exceptional sex life, though, she felt at the age of 44 that something was missing — maybe it was a lack of passion, maybe it was that she had slept with only a few men before marriage or maybe it was that her husband had squashed her hopes of having a child by getting a vasectomy. In her new book, “The Wild Oats Project: One Woman’s Midlife Quest for Passion at Any Cost,” she writes, ”I refuse to go to my grave with no children and only four lovers. If I can’t have one, I must have the other.”

Access to Care Is a Way to Save Transgender Youth’s Lives Today

So far this year, the transgender community has seen a mind-boggling amount of violence and loss.

Whether it is Penny Proud in New Orleans, Louisiana, or Bri Golec in Akron, Ohio, in each case the circumstances are eerily similar: Trans women losing their lives unnecessarily as victims of brutal, violent crimes. Other high profile cases of suicides among transgender individuals, or cases of discrimination suffered by transgender people in either housing or the workplace have captured the nation’s attention by sharing the challenges that transgender people face by being marginalized, othered, harassed, hurt and misunderstood. Collectively these cases have created a rise in social media posts with a poignant and all-too-familiar hash tag, #translivesmatter.

Among all of this loss, it is the Leelah Alcorn case, and others like hers, that I cannot seem to shake from my head as a pediatrician. You may recall that Leelah was the 17-year-old transgender woman who chose to, or was driven to, end her own life. At the time, the case garnered national headlines with the main focus on Leelah’s public social media posts in the weeks preceding her death. These haunting posts discussed her negative experiences with conversion therapy to supposedly “cure” her of her transgender identity.

However, the undiscussed aspect of the Leelah Alcorn case is that access to healthcare, particularly for gender-affirming medical therapies may have saved her life.

Re-read some of her social media posts before she took her life, “I can’t wait until I am 18 to begin transitioning,” and “I can’t wait one more day.” These posts point to her inability to access appropriate healthcare as a potential immediate precipitating factor in her death; one that may have been 100 percent preventable.

I suspect this aspect of the story was not pursued with vigor out of respect to Leelah’s grieving parents, who the media chose to, understandably, not challenge with respect to the rationale behind the decisions they may have made or not made for their child. And it certainly is not my intention to unnecessarily stir the pot, create drama or inflict more pain for on the Alcorn family.

However, there is a larger educational point that needs to be said loud and clear for the benefit of other families and for transgender or gender nonconforming youth. That message is simple: For transgender youth, access to health care services saves lives.

Truth is that in many centers, including the Gender and Sex Development Program that I co-direct at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, adolescents like Leelah shouldn’t have to wait until the age of 18 to begin engaging in gender-affirming care. Youth should and do have the opportunity to begin the process of transitioning in a way that allows them to live life as their authentic self.

Our Gender Program’s multidisciplinary team and other programs models across the country are complete with pediatricians, nurses, child development specialists, mental health providers and endocrinologists all committed to working with youth and families who are seeking advice or guidance in confronting the challenges of raising a gender non-conforming or transgender child. In many instances these individuals are not familiar with sources of support in the community or options related to medical therapies and interventions.

The Endocrine Society and World Professional Association of Transgender Health Professionals (WPATH) have what are now considered widely-used clinical care guidelines that support the use of pubertal blocking medications in certain gender non-conforming children or early adolescents based upon pubertal and developmental age. They also support the initiation of cross sex hormones in transgender young people as young as 16 years of age (and in some case and some centers even younger).

It is not unusual for teams such as ours to encounter parents or families of children that do not initially support these medical interventions — often due to a denial about the child’s authentic gender identity, a lack of education about the safety of potential medical interventions or a deeply rooted personal, religious or cultural objection. In the overwhelming majority of these cases (but certainly not all), we can work effectively with families and individuals to find a common path moving forward, or at the very least finding a path that ensures the safety and well-being of the child or adolescent.

Centers like ours strive to dispel myths that label being transgender as an affectation or pathology as opposed to the stable identity it represents for most individuals. We also work with families to see their children through a broader and more realistic lens than the spectrum of dysfunction that is too often the focus of negative media attention.

For, while it remains true that too many transgender youth are the victims of hate crimes, and too many become homeless or contemplate suicide, this spectrum of dysfunction does not capture the strength, perseverance, pride and resilience that in my professional opinion more accurately captures the spirit of the young transgender people I see each and every day.

Alongside educating families, it is important to educate the adolescents themselves about their individual rights with regard to medical decision-making particularly as it relates to mature minor statutes on the state level or legal emancipation as a last resort for those who may be at the point of crisis or self-harm.

In essence, for many individuals like Leelah, access to one of the many centers across the country that care for gender non-conforming children or adolescents could literally be a lifeline to a future as their authentic selves.

And most importantly, access to care at these sites can save lives starting today.

Three Life Hacks That Will Save Your Marriage

You’ve been working really hard on your relationship. At least, it feels like hard work because it’s so draining and takes up so much time and energy. The bad news is you were probably working on trying to fix the wrong things. The good news is that no matter how bad it seems now, it’s not too late to use these life hacks to get back the relationship — the fulfilling one you set out to have when you first fell in love. That’s true even if you’re separated, there’s been an affair or the divorce is already started.

Of course, if the affairs are chronic, your partner is actively addicted to drugs, alcohol or gambling or you’re with a physical abuser, it is not worth saving your marriage because you’re not safe.

But, if none of that applies to your situation, here’s what you can do to restore the peace, passion and connection you once shared:

1. Duct Tape
Not only does it hold the universe together, duct tape can also keep your relationship together — if you put it over your mouth whenever you’re tempted to tell your spouse how to cut an onion, to eat more leafy greens or how to ask the boss for a raise. If your goal is connection and playfulness, consider trusting your partner to figure it out, even if he sometimes seems clueless.

You might be wondering, “What if I’m better at those things than she is?” or “What’s so bad about helping him improve by teaching him what I know?” The answer is right there in the question: Nobody wants to be improved. Trying to improve your partner creates distance and defensiveness.

You probably don’t feel all that good hearing yourself giving orders like the third-grade teacher who told her boyfriend to “Go sit down,” or “Put that away.” It’s not attractive or conducive to intimacy. Why should being efficient take precedence over faith and trust in your partner’s ability? You wouldn’t have picked him if you didn’t think he was capable to begin with.

If you’re anything like me, giving up trying to control your partner cold-turkey is like trying to stop thinking about elephants. It’s a hard habit to break, unless you start with these next two life-hacks. They will give you the reserves and the perspective you need to keep the duct tape on when you need it the most.

2. Naps
Think napping is only for babies? You’re more likely to act like a baby when you’re overtired, including overreacting to your partner’s loud phone conversation or the dishes left in the living room again. The world just doesn’t look right when you’re depleted, so when your spouse is getting on your very last nerve it could be — and often is — that your energy account is simply overdrawn.

Your level of tolerance is directly proportional to how much rest and relaxation you’ve had. Think your relationship problems are bigger than just sleep-deprivation? Go lie down for an hour and let’s find out. Sometimes the most important thing to do next is to rest.

When you’re well-rested and rejuvenated, you might appreciate that the loud phone conversation that had you gritting your teeth was him taking care of the health insurance so that you don’t have to, and that the dishes in the living room are there because he made his famous chili for everyone while you were out.

3. Coffee Klatches
Relying on just one person for all your social and emotional needs is just not a good set up. That’s why you need a knitting circle, poker buddies or a running club to save your marriage.

That’s because you need more than one person to meet your emotional needs. In my case, it takes two sisters, three friends and my husband to make me feel better on a bad day.

You also need friends, perhaps with coffee cups. You might explain to them how much better you are at cutting an onion than your partner, for example. They might remind you to take a nap.

You might also talk about how stressed you are at work, or challenged by your kid’s poor grades or your mom’s forgetfulness. Sure, you can tell your spouse these things, but why not tell more than one person? We humans need several other humans to bear witness to our experiences.

You social community can help uphold your marriage by doing some of the witnessing. You’ll feel nurtured instead of needy by the time you get home to your spouse, and that happy grin from all the knitting, poker, running and talking will not only make you more attractive, it will go a long way toward creating a good mood at home.

Sure, you still wish he’d clean up more, or she’d spend less or not indulge the kids so much. You’ll still be frustrated at times because your partner doesn’t listen, or doesn’t pay attention to you. But the more you use these three life hacks, the smaller those problems will seem. The more emotionally safe, well-rested and supported you are, the happier your marriage will be. And unlike your partner’s behavior, all of these hacks are well within your control.

For more unusually effective life-hacks for saving your marriage, and to find out how good your Intimacy Skills are, take the free quiz here.
