The Essential Skincare Routine Every Man Should Follow

Think of the best men’s skincare regimen like making a sandwich, or a pizza, or following any recipe, really. There is a specific order that you need to follow in order for everything to work together to achieve the shared goal. Of course, your skincare routine won’t satisfy your hunger pangs, but it will nourish and hydrate your skin, which is the shared goal of all the products you use.

The Best Skincare Products Every Guy Needs

There are two that are mandatory and the rest is optional, but extremely beneficial. Here’s everything you need to know about the best products to consider.

Grooming Essentials, But Better: 22 Carefully Curated Products

Cleanser (Mandatory, Daily and Nightly)
First things first: Wash your face. You should not be applying anything to your face if it isn’t clean. That’s because there’s a thin layer of sweat, oil, and grime that has built up, and it will prevent the products you use from absorbing and from doing their jobs. Plus, cleansing unclogs the pores, and prevents them from clogging, so add another tally for doing it twice daily: when you wake up and before you hit your pillow. Do it after exercising, or after you get too sweaty or dirty during the day.

Even if you don’t have sensitive skin, it’s wise to use a product that touts itself as gentle, so that you don’t flush your face with abrasive cleansing agents multiple times a day. Otherwise, it’s a recipe for dry, irritated skin. Stick with gentle cleansers that also accommodate sensitive skin, like Aesop Cleansing Milk or Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser.

Exfoliant (Twice Weekly)
While a cleanser helps flush away dirt and grime, an exfoliant is an abrasive product that lifts dead skin cells away from the surface of the skin, preventing them from clogging pores. This process then allows the healthy, strong skin cells to put their best face forward. In this way, exfoliating can promote cellular turnover in the skin, helping to heal dark spots and blemishes faster. However, it should not be used on acne or active, healing wounds. Stick to a twice-weekly usage, as anything greater would only aggravate the healthy skin cells and cause redness or irritation. We recommend exfoliating at night so the skin can rebound fully overnight.

Two exfoliants we love are Brickell’s scrub, packed with pumice and jojoba beads, and Menaji’s face and body scrub, which is generously portioned to cover every inch.

Toner (Optional, As Needed)
If you have oily skin or if you use all of the products in this regimen, then you may need a natural toner before proceeding. A toner “resets” the skin’s natural pH levels and regulates oil production. These things are otherwise aggravated by excessive product use, or by one’s own genetics. Typically, toners are a simple splash that you can apply with a cotton ball. They absorb and dry quickly. Be certain to avoid anything with alcohol that dries the skin—that will do far more damage than good. You really can’t go wrong with witch hazel, like Thayer’s. Tea tree toners are also great at balancing and neutralizing the skin, like that from The Body Shop.

Serum (Optional)
If you want to kick your skincare regimen up a notch, the easiest way to do so is with a serum. It’s lightweight and seeps deep into the skin to help hydrate and nourish your skin. There are tons to choose from: Some promise radiant skin, while others help clear up dark spots, shrink pores, or firm fine lines. Others even exfoliate.

If this is your first foray into serums, however, then start with one that focuses on hydration. Pick a hyaluronic acid serum, since the ingredient soaks up moisture to keep skin firm. You can apply it morning and night—just a couple drops should do the trick. We recommend trying the hyaluronic acid serums from The Ordinary or OSEA.

Eye Cream (Optional)
Another optional product: eye cream, but we’re guessing more of us find it mandatory than not. That’s because eye cream can correct a host of problems, like under-eye baggage, dark circles, as well as fine lines and wrinkles. The skin around the eyes is thinner and more fragile than the rest of the face, and it’s a lot more sensitive, too. That’s why you find eye-dedicated products targeted alongside moisturizers. Many of them also contain peptides, which boost collagen and elastin production.

You can pick a caffeine- and hyaluronic-packed one for the daytime to help stimulate blood flow and boost moisture levels—for that, pick Supply’s eye cream. Or, for nighttime, you can pick something that prevents the onset of puffiness and dark circles, like Kiehl’s overnight eye cream.

Retinol (Optional, Nightly)
Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that works wonders as an anti-ager. It helps shrink pores, reduce breakouts and wrinkles, and more. The only caveats: It can make your skin sensitive to sunlight, so it really should be applied for nighttime use; second, if you’re going to sign on to using retinol, you won’t see results for about three months, and you’ll need to use it indefinitely to keep said rewards. And if you experience any peeling or redness at first, it might just be that your skin is adjusting to the retinol, but most OTC products have low enough doses of retinol to do this.

There are all kinds of retinol products out there, and you might see them under different terminology, like retinoids, Retin-A, tretinoin, and so forth. The latter is the common name for most dermatologist-prescribed versions of retinol. These are typically higher-strength products that have profound effects on the skin, though they may also render it more sensitive to sunlight. Just work with your doctor to find something that works well for you. Just note that the prescriptions are often deemed “cosmetic” by your insurance company, and they may not cover its use. (A typical tube can run $ 100 otherwise, which is why many people stick with lower-grade, OTC products which double as their overnight moisturizer.) If you choose the OTC route, we suggest Philip Thomas Roth’s retinol serum (which should yet be topped with an overnight cream) or Drunk Elephant’s nightly retinol cream.

SPF Moisturizer (Mandatory, Daily) or Overnight Moisturizer (Mandatory, Nightly):
Moisturizing is the final step in any and all skincare routines and just as important as cleansing your face. That’s because moisturizer both nourishes and protects the skin. A daytime moisturizer should be packed with SPF to also shield the skin from harmful UV rays. Look for broad-spectrum hydrators that block both UVA and UVB rays, and something with SPF 30 or more is preferred—Cardon’s SPF moisturizer checks all the right boxes.

Since you don’t need sun protection while you sleep, pick a dense overnight cream that will work double time to help cells regenerate and to give you the most nourished skin when you wake up. Some are also packed with retinol for a 2-in-1 boost (like Clark’s Botanicals’), while others work to detox and recover skin (such as Grown Alchemist’s).

Not every guy should follow the exact same regimen. Here are some additional tips from Dr. Michele Green, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, on what to consider using in your routine if you have…

Oily Skin: Green notes that, while sebum production is good for the skin’s health, an overproduction of it (as seen in oily skin) can feel grimey and can clog the pores, leading to acne and blackheads. She recommends using a lightweight, lipid-free cleanser. (We love Elta MD’s foaming cleanser.)

“After cleansing, apply a toner to help open the pores,” she says. “Select a toner with alpha hydroxy, salicylic, or glycolic acid, since these ingredients facilitate cell turnover, control oil, and remove dead skin cells.” (Try REN’s clarifying toner.)

Green says that, in general, the best types of hydrators for nourishing and regulating oily skin include gel-based products and lightweight formulas. “These elements provide your skin with the nourishment it needs without clogging the pores.” (Lab Series’ hydrating gel is an excellent option with a matte finish.)

Sensitive Skin:
One ingredient Dr. Green encourages her sensitive-skin patients to seek is bakuchiol. “ Bakuchiol is a derivative of the Babchi plant which in studies have shown to have the same effects on the skin as retinols,” Green says. However, bakuchiol products won’t be irritating on skin like retinol ones. “Although this alternative works differently, the benefits are the same: It stimulates collagen, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, plus improves skin texture, acne, and hyperpigmentation.” (Give Ole Henriksen’s Retin-ALT bakuchiol serum a go.)

As for toners, moisturizers, and serums, Green says to avoid anything salicylic acid and other alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs). Instead, stick with witch hazel. “Witch hazel offers the same benefits as salicylic acid. It is a natural herbal extract with the ability to cleanse the pores, soothe the skin, thus preventing blackheads and acne.” (Again, Thayer’s witch hazel is a surefire bet.)

“When it comes to a moisturizer for sensitive skin, jojoba oil works great,” she says. “It is very similar to the skin’s natural sebum which makes it a great alternative for added moisture. It has the ability to provide moisture only in areas that need it while maintaining moisture levels in other areas.” (Pyunkang Yul’s oil is a winner here.)

Acne-Prone Skin:
“Select a skin-balancing skin cleanser to balance oil control while also cleansing the skin,” Dr. Green says. (Her own brand, MG Skin Labs, makes an excellent pore-minimizing, skin-toning cleanser.) “Cleansers like this should contain a combination of benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid,” she says. “Salicylic acid works to gently exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin which can clog the pores. Benzoyl peroxide treats the acne-causing bacteria. The combination of these two is effective at treating acne.”

Next, you should add a step after cleansing: Apply a treatment product (and you should avoid exfoliating, while we’re at it). “This product should also contain salicylic acid or glycolic acid,” she says of daytime use. As for nighttime, consider retinol or tretinoin as outlined above in the general regimen, after serum application. “These ingredients work well on acne-prone skin to control breakouts.” (She often recommends Differin adapalene gel, an OTC acne-fighting gel with adapalene, which is a form of retinoid. “Adapalene works by killing bacteria that causes acne and also promotes cell growth allowing the skin to heal faster.”)

As for moisture: “Acne-prone skin needs a moisturizer containing hyaluronic acid and Vitamin C,” she says. Together they’ll help the skin rebound from acne and scarring, while also promoting maximum moisture and reducing future breakouts. (Vichy’s serum + moisturizer combo is a good duo for this.)

Designer Billy Reid on How to Look Fit and the One Thing Every Guy Should Do Before a Big Event

Have you ever noticed the guys who love to dole out style advice are often the ones that actually need some themselves? The guys with the real knowledge don’t feel the need to evangelize about how to get great style—you have to ask. That’s exactly what we did when we saw designer Billy Reid backstage at his Spring/Summer 2020 runway shot in Florence, AL, the location of his flagship store and his annual food and music festival, the Shindig.

Reid’s aesthetic—a mix of laid-back Southern roots and sharp New York sensibility—blends loose silhouettes, intricate patterns, and cool, neutral hues. It’s a style that’s born of inspiration and necessity.

“I’ve spent my whole career traveling to New York, Alabama—everywhere,” says Reid. “So I only keep things in my closet that fit me well and will outlast trends.”

Read on for Reid’s tips on building a closet, looking slimmer, and the one thing you should always do before any dressed-up event.

Our 2019 Fall Fashion Preview, Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II

Buy Fewer—Better—Things

Billy’s approach to his closet is the same as his collection: quality over quantity. “It’s better to have high-quality pieces that really fit you well than just a lot of clothes taking up space,” Reid says. When paring down his closet, he asks himself what he would take on a two-week trip if he had to pack right then. Anything that doesn’t fit that mold gets the axe.

“That leaves me with my favorite jeans, my navy blazer, some T-shirts, a suit, exercise clothes, and then some more laid-back items,” he says. “Essentially, I boil it down to just what I need.” Reid wears clothes largely in solid neutrals like navy, black, white, and gray—with some small dashes of color—because they always look great together and will always make for a timeless look.

Essentially, I boil it down to just what I need.

“Of course, you’ll still have that tux you wear once or twice a year, but those everyday essentials can take you a lot of places.”

If you have a massive closet, a good place to start is weeding out anything you haven’t worn for the past year. Then you can start assembling the pieces you definitely want to keep by using Reid’s method.

7 Stylish and Sustainable Clothing Brands You Can Feel Good About Wearing

Don’t Overdo It

A tie bar or a pocket square can add some panache to your look and show off your personal style. However, wear them along with suspenders, a pocket square, a lapel pin, and a chain wallet, and you’ll come across as trying too hard.

“I love accessories,” Reid says. “I think men need them. But stick with just one.”

For example, if you’re wearing a sport coat, adding a pocket square can be a bold statement by itself. The temptation could be to combine it with other pieces, but Billy says the right way to nail the look is to commit to just one accessory and own it.

“You don’t need that extra lapel pin—unless you’re a senator.”

The Best Leather Boots to Wear This Fall

Big Event? Always Wear-Test

If you’ve ever pulled out a jacket or suit before a wedding or ceremony only to find that it doesn’t fit well or isn’t tailored correctly, you probably learned this trick the hard way. Reid suggests that before any notable event—or any time you need to look your best—to wear your planned outfit well in advance.

“When Sean Connery landed the role as 007, he knew he’d be wearing one gray suit a lot, so for weeks before filming he wore it every day. Apparently he even slept in it,” Reid says. “That’s why he looked so relaxed and confident in the film.”

To that end, Reid outfitted Daniel Craig with his iconic peacoats for Skyfall and made the delivery weeks early so Craig could live in them before filming.

Wear-testing will also help you realize if the finer tailoring details—cuffs, hems, length—need tweaking. Shoot to have your look three weeks before the big event and wear it at least twice so your look will say you know how to own a room.

Courtesy image

Less Fabric is More Flattering

Tailoring is a specialty of Reid’s, and he knows how the right cut can make you look fit—or fat. To trim down your silhouette, he suggests using less fabric whenever possible. For tops, this means band collars for formal events and Henleys for something more casual.

“Removing a collar makes your neck look longer and creates a slimming effect,” he says. “It’s a trick women use often, but it can be translated into menswear, too.”

The same goes for your pant width. A baggier fit—unless that’s the intended effect—can make your bottom half look heavy, especially in photos.

“On ESPN, the sportscasters often wear slimmer-cut pants that are cut like jeans, because they want that slimmer leg.”

All the Cool, Casual Style Essentials You Need for City Living

Achieve this same look by opting for slim-fit pants—even on bigger guys. Having no more than 2 to 3 inches of excess fabric at your leg when standing is the perfect way to make your overall shape look slimmer in a flash.

I love accessories. I think men need them. But stick with just one.

Mind Your Proportions

Just as the width of your clothes is essential, so is the length.

“Wearing a jacket that’s too long can weigh you down,” Reid says.

It’s essential to find your own just-right jacket length to even out your proportions. Reid wears his jacket a bit shorter than a typical off-the-rack jacket in his size, but it took him a while to figure out what worked best for him.

The old-school trick is to cup your fingers against your palms to find the spot where your jacket should hit. “It’s not so scientific, but it’ll give you a feel for what’s right.”

For the best results, Reid recommends working with your tailor to experiment with different lengths and find the one that’s right for you.

“Once you train your mind to see the small differences, you’ll start noticing it with all your clothes, and you’ll look better for it.”

Why You Should Consider a Laser Facial

A spa facial is great, but you can really get one at home: wash, exfoliation, steam, blackhead removal, mask, lotion. What’s your bathroom not outfitted for? Laser facials. We spoke with Kelly Rheel, owner of Flash Lab Laser Suite in New York City, about why you might want to get zapped.

What Does a Laser Facial Do?

There are different machines, but some of the most sought-after models shoot lasers at skin to boost collagen production to make your face look healthy and feel softer. Lasers can reduce acne scars, improve tone, and remove tattoos. The FDA-approved Clear and Brilliant machine is widely available and costs about $ 400 per treatment. You’ll notice a change after one session, but some people will want to do three to six monthly treatments. (Many spas offer package deals.)

What Men Need to Know About Laser Hair Removal

What Does it Feel Like?

It stings, but it’s over in about 15 minutes. Some treatments go deeper into the skin, and your technician will apply numbing cream half an hour before you get going. (Also, a pre-treatment whiskey helps.)

Will I Be Red in the Face?

Your skin will be pink and warm to the touch for up to 24 hours, then feel rough for up to three days. It’s not so severe that you have to hide out. Just hydrate and use a moisturizer with SPF.

Dream Watches: The Most Lustworthy Timepieces Every Guy Should Have in His Collection

Some watches are true icons of style. From functional dive watches to statement-making dress watches and classic pilot watches, here are three essential pieces that are particularly lustworthy, courtesy of Crown & Caliber’s client services manager, Nathan Nerswick.

Dive Watch: Rolex Submariner 114060

“There is no other dive watch,” Nerswick says. “Enough said.” This stainless steel Submariner 114060 with its classic black dial and bezel runs for about eight grand, but other Subs range in price from $ 6,000 all the way up to $ 26,000.

Dress Watch: Patek Philippe Calatrava

“For a lot of people, Patek Philippe is the ‘grail,’ the dress watch, and the Calatrava has the perfect timeless understated style,” Nerswick says. This specific Calatrava, pictured above, comes with a price tag of $ 15,000.

Pilot Watch: IWC Mark Series

If it’s a truly authentic pilot watch you want, check out this one, which was “worn by actual pilots,” according to Nerswick. “The IWC Mark series is rooted in the idea that form follows function.” And it’s yours for $ 3,500.

5 Things You Should Consider When Buying a Pre-Owned Watch

When it comes to shopping for your next luxury watch, you should begin your search by first asking yourself a few simple questions.

“What is your budget? Start there,” says Nathan Nerswick, a client services manager at Crown & Caliber, the Atlanta-based online watch shop where you can sell luxury timepieces and buy everything from a used OMEGA Speedmaster to a Rolex GMT-Master II.

“A lot of people don’t want to talk about money, but I think that’s kind of a baseline,” Nerswick tells Men’s Journal in the video above. “You need to be able to say, ‘Hey, I’m willing to spend $ 5,000.’ Cool, let’s look at $ 5,000 watches.”

Inside the Lab: Crown & Caliber, the Online Luxury Watch Shop

Knowing your budget can help you narrow down your search, especially when you’re looking at the endless options online. Next, Nerswick explains to also focus on the other watches you own. “There’s a big difference between it being your first watch or your fifth watch,” he says, “and so that can really inform the direction we’re going.” But there’s plenty more to consider, especially for the place you’re buying the watch from.

“When you’re looking to buy a watch from anyone—certainly online—the No. 1 thing you need to ask them is if they have actual trained watchmakers,” says Jason Allen, Crown & Caliber’s chief marketing officer. The online shop has its own in-house watchmakers in Atlanta who authenticate and work on every watch that goes up on the brand’s website.

12 Awesome Fair Trade Grooming Products You Should Try

October is National Fair Trade Month. Why should this matter to you? If you’re making more ethical and informed decisions about the products you buy, whether it’s coffee or clothing, you should know the Fair Trade seal means that the farmers and workers behind the brands are paid fairly, fragile ecosystems are protected, communities are supported, and supply chains remain socially conscious. Add grooming products to your list.

Some of the best and most effective natural ingredients for your skin and hair, including coconut, argan, apricot, and brazil nut oils, are produced by small-scale farmers around the world. If you’re filling your body with organic food and drinking Fair Trade-certified beverages, consider taking the same care for the ingredients you’re slathering on your skin and hair. They’re often a healthier alternative—and easier to find than ever online and at your local stores. Here, a dozen of the best grooming products to treat your body—and your soul.

Grooming Habits Every Man Should Take up

Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wipes

Keep these portable wipes handy in your desk drawer, camping backpack, or gym bag for an instant refresh anywhere—no water required. In one swipe, you’ll tackle dirt, oil, and head off acne with the antibacterial and antiseptic properties of hero ingredient, tea tree oil. The oil, sourced from from the foothills of Mount Kenya, provides local farmers with a steady income and sustainable farming systems, and it funds area community projects, too.

Out of Africa Olive Shea Butter Hand Cream

You don’t have to be a Stark or a Lannister to know that winter is coming. This super-rich hand cream, made with organic shea butter, will soften those wind-cracked hands and leathery winter skin with the healing power of vitamins A and E. The brand also works closely with women’s cooperatives in Benin, West Africa, to provide income, health benefits, and education to the community.

[$ 11; amazon.com]

Dr Bronner’s Organic Magic Balm

You may know this iconic brand for its line of organic castile soaps, but the more recently introduced Magic Balm is an equally stellar find. Apply a coating of this solid salve to new tattoos, gym-induced chafing and other assorted dry patches—from shaggy cuticles to scaly elbows to sandpaper heels—and they’ll instantly be smoother. The easy-to-use tin is chock full of organic ingredients, including beeswax, and oils from coconut, avocado, jojoba, olive, and hemp. The Fair Trade coconut oil sourced from Samoa even helps local farmers improve their land and diversify their crops.

Nubian Heritage Abyssinian & Chia Seed Bar Soap

You’ll appreciate the earthy scent of this bar soap that uses chia seeds to scrub away dirt and dead skin. The nourishing amaranth extract softens your texture while ginseng encourages smoother, revitalized, and younger-looking skin. (Check out: 20 Ways to Look Younger—Without Looking Like You’re Trying.) The brand focuses on organic and natural ingredients, and the shea butter in this soap is ethically sourced from women’s co-ops in Northern Ghana.

Cocokind Facial Repair Serum

Night time is the best time to heal the damage we do to our skin all day long. Apply just a few drops of this serum before you hit the sheets will repair damaged skin, even out your skin tone, and reduce everything from redness to sunspots. (Find out why serum is the one grooming product every guy needs.) The organic oil trifecta of softness—coconut, avocado, and rose hips—absorb quickly.

[$ 10; amazon.com]

Honestly pHresh Prebiotic Natural Deodorant

A moment of truth here: The aluminum in your nuclear-strength antiperspirant that keeps your armpits dry could be harmful in high doses. Most other natural deodorants use baking soda to eliminate the bacteria that causes smells, though they can mess with the pH of your skin and give you rashes. This magnesium-enriched stick glides on easily, and attacks the bacteria that causes odor, leaving a deep and woodsy scent behind.

Eco Lips Sweet Mint Balm

Tender lips shouldn’t be coated with a harsh petroleum. We like the ultra-smooth texture of this vegan balm that protects your smackers with a light and easy formula of Fair Trade sunflower and coconut oils. Vitamin E will heal the rough stuff and the stimulating mint flavor will keep your mouth feeling fresh.

[$ 11, for 3; amazon.com]

Alaffia Coconut + Sea Salt Face Scrub

Get the dirt out with a natural scrub that’s tough on oil on your skin. This cleanser combines ethically traded virgin coconut oil, sea salt, and sugar for gentle exfoliation and deep cleaning that’s easy for everyday use. The brand sources the coconut oil and other ingredients through cooperatives in West Africa that empower women.

[$ 10; alaffia.com]

Lush Fairly Traded Honey Shampoo

Give your stressed locks a break from the drying detergents found in most shampoos. This natural formula contains Free Trade honey and linseed to add shine and softness to your hair. It even naturally moisturizes without weighing down your hair. Best of all, like all Lush products, it’s made by hand.

[$ 14; lush.com]

Andalou Naturals Men Grooming Style Balm

We know, it almost seems contradictory that a natural hair styling product can control and define your unruly hair. But this formula of aloe, organic hemp seed oil, cocoa seed butter, and other earthy ingredients can tame your mane as well as your beard. (Check out: How to Tame Your Wild Beard.) You’ll appreciate the fresh scent in addition to the fact that the company uses sustainably sourced ingredients and donates a significant portion of its profits to charitable partners. Your beard will feel better, and you just might, too.

Shea Moisture African Black Soap & Butter Shave Cream for Men

Great shaves start with a slick surface. Razor burn or bumps? Consider trying out this cream. The natural shea butter helps moisturize skin and creates a protective coating between your face and the blade. Bonus: Ten percent of this brand’s sales go to helping women-led businesses, or The Sofi Tucker Foundation, that helps organizations aimed at economically empowering women and their communities both across America and in Africa.

[$ 11; amazon.com]

Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint All-One Toothpaste

You have to hand it to this California-based brand. It’s been a pioneer in sourcing ethical and natural ingredients—and continue to expand its offerings, including this tooth paste introduced last year. Inside: 70 organic ingredients, including Fair Trade and organic coconut flour and coconut oil. And, if you were wondering if it was: vegan, fluoride-free, non-GMO certified, NSF-certified, a minty paste that uses coconut flour and coconut oil to leave teeth feeling clean and bright? Well, you’re in luck.

19 things every man should own

We’re grown-ups now. It’s time to put down childish things. Your PlayStation is no longer your most prized possession. Air Jordans have moved from everyday attire to casual wear. Most of all, you’ve started doing things for yourself. That means you require a list of necessities, and that’s where we come in.We’ve done the leg work. Some items you might have already and others might be on your wishlist. But here’s a rundown of everything a man like you needs.

1. A tailored suit

As a matter of both utility and principle, every man needs at least one suit in his closet. But do it right. Make sure the suit is tailored to fit your body and show off the hard work you’ve done in the gym, and in the kitchen. Go for a neutral color, like navy, grey or black.

2. Brown and black dress shoes

A nice pair of shoes can upgrade any outfit. If you’re going to choose one, go with a brown pair that you can mix in with any look. In terms of style, an oxford loafer is like the universal shoe for your wardrobe. They work with jeans, khakis, and slacks.

3. Shoe polish

You wash, dry, dry-clean, and iron your clothes. Are you giving your shoes the same attention? Because the same principle applies: A little effort goes a long way.

4. A leather belt

Here’s a general man-law: If your pants have belt loops, wear a belt. Another tip: Always match your belt with your shoes.

5. A sports jacket

A sports jacket or blazer can upgrade just about any outfit. Whether you’re wearing a T-shirt and jeans or a dress shirt and pants, a sports jacket will stamp some maturity on it.

6. Cologne

Here’s something you already know: Women like a man who smells good. If you’re just starting out picking a fragrance, find one scent you like. Then build on that. Just don’t bathe in it. Spray a little on your chest and the base of your throat.

7. A wallet

We’re all too old now to just shove things in our pockets. Just remember, this isn’t your father’s giant, bulging leather wallet that protrudes from his back pocket. Go for a thinner version or use a simple card holder.

8. A travel bag

You’ve graduated from backpacks and gym bags. Toss your things into a more respectable carrying case that’s perfect for a weekend getaway or business trip.

9. A nice watch

Yes, you could check the time on your cell phone or your tablet, or your laptop or the positioning of the sun. But a nice watch says a lot about your taste. Consider it the grandfather of all accessories.

10. A grooming kit

Unless you have a live-in barber, consider this an essential tool kit for your face.

11. A quality chef’s knife

You don’t really need an entire knife set unless you want it for decoration. If you’re going to buy one kitchen knife, make it a chef’s knife. Don’t let the price tag scare you off. It’s better to have one knife that can do five things than five different knives that you barely use.

12. A cast iron skillet

It’s non-stick, easy to clean, and you can use it on the stove and in the oven at any temperature. Plus, it’s sturdy, doesn’t scratch, and can probably last you a lifetime.

13. A passport

It’s your bus pass to see the world. Get a passport. Get some stamps in it.

14. An iron and an ironing board

Yes, it’s easier to take all your clothes to the cleaners, but that’s not always practical. You never want to leave home looking like you slept in your clothes. And you’ve passed the stage where it’s okay to iron your shirt on the kitchen counter.

15. A lint roller

Having a lint roller can be a life saver. It’s usually more effective and easier on fabric than a lint brush.

16. A pair of sunglasses

Find a pair that compliments your face. Aviators and wayfarers are safe bets if you’re looking to add a little flair.

17. A recipe book

Read this carefully: Women. Love. A. Man. Who. Cooks. Whether it’s a do-it-yourself date night dinner or you’ve got the choice of either cooking or ordering Chinese, it’s time you learned to fend for yourself.

18. A toolbox

We’re not saying that you should become Bob the Handyman, but you should have easy access to a hammer, wrench, and screwdriver at all times.

19. A universal remote

The family of remote controls sitting by the television—one for the TV, one for the cable, and another for the DVD player—they have to go. Make your life easier.

4 Can’t-Live-Without Grooming Products You Should Add to Your Routine

Long gone are the days when men had to siphon off facial moisturizers, serums, and hairspray marketed to women that they found in the medicine cabinet. There are a bevy of products out there for men in masculine scents: cedar, tobacco, leather.

However, there’s a big group of guys who don’t want to smell like a cigar club—and an equal number of women who eschew sweet, floral scents that are sold to the fairer sex. Over the last year, the products in my bathroom have shifted to almost exclusively unisex. The scents tend to be clean and herbaceous, and all the products are on the must-have list (instead of nice-to-have—I wouldn’t know firsthand, but I have yet to meet the guy who needs four kinds of beard oil). Check out some of our current favorites, below, that you’ll want to add to your regular routine.

20 Ways to Look Younger — Without Looking Like You’re Trying

EIR NYC Pitted Deodorant
Courtesy image

EIR NYC Pitted Deodorant
This Brooklyn-based all-natural unisex brand has quite a few products I use on the regular, particularly the Surf Mud Pro face stick for SPF protection and the fizzy Active Face Wash. But it’s the deodorant I’m particularly crazy about. It comes in a biodegradable tube, and is non-obvious enough that I can throw it in my bag if I know it’s going to be a hot one. The protection is as good as I get from drugstore brands, and I love the smell of evergreen trees and sand, reminiscent of the northern coast of California. This is the sort of thing I stock up on and give to my friends to try.

Maapilim Facial Mud Mask
Courtesy image

Maapilim Facial Mud Mask
If you haven’t tried a mud mask before, you’re going to love it. Cake this stuff on, which smells soothing, like a ceramics studio, wait until it gets dry and matte, and wash it off with a cloth. Clear pores and oil-free skin await, which makes this a summer must-have. Getting it off can be a bit of a production, so if you’re short on time in the morning, rub some across your nose and chin, have coffee and brush your teeth while it dries, then wipe off the mud and go.

[$ 38; maapilim.com]

Sachajuan Dry Powder Shampoo
Courtesy image

Sachajuan Dry Powder Shampoo
There are some mornings that a full post-workout in the shower isn’t in the cards and the best you can hope for is a paper towel wipe-down and forgiving coworkers. On those days, I add one more thing to the express itinerary—dry shampoo. These products are supposed to give you a quick refresh and soak up some scalp sweat. Fair enough. But often, they come out too powdery and you turn out looking like an 18th century barrister. This spray comes out fast, cold, and mostly clear. Plus, it gives your hair a little lift and style as it dries.

[$ 35; sephora.com]

Youth Corridor Ultimate Antioxidant C Boost Serum
Courtesy image

Youth Corridor Ultimate Antioxidant C Boost Serum
I’m 34, but a few months ago I realized there were lines and sagging on my face that made me look (and feel) quite a bit older. So I’ve been pretty religious about applying a few drops of this serum to my mug every morning, and man has it made a difference. My skin looks brighter and it’s more resilient, especially when I spend the whole day in the sun. And it feels healthier to the touch. It’s pricey, but a bottle should last you about a year.

How to Determine If You Should Talk About Politics in Public

When candidate Trump first set about the job of redefining politics (and reality) back in 2015, people had lots of predictions about how things would turn out. One year isn’t long enough to know everything we need to know about his presidency, but it’s long enough to to check some of our predictions. As a public service, I put together a list of predictions that various people made about Trump that you can use to evaluate your own predictive powers. Count the number of items on the list that you once predicted would be true. I’ll tell you how to evaluate your score at the end.

Did you once believe…

Trump will never win the GOP nomination.

Trump will never win the presidency.

Stocks will drop if Trump is elected.

President Trump will deport ten million illegal immigrants.

Trump will be gone (impeached, jailed, or quit) by end of 2017.

Trump’s immigration ban on several Muslim countries will be found unconstitutional.

Trump colluded with Russia, and that’s a crime.

Trump obstructed justice (a crime) by firing Comey.

Trump’s skills as a “con man” might get him elected but it won’t transfer into doing the job of president.

Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel will cause huge problems.

Trump’s tweeting will cause huge problems.

GOP will never embrace Trump.

Trump will get nothing important done.

Trump will not work effectively with leaders of other countries.

GOP senators will vote against GOP priorities because of President Trump’s mean tweets.

Trump will not nominate qualified judges to the Supreme Court.

Trump is incompetent.

Presidential approval polls are a good predictor of how a president will perform.

The military won’t follow Trump’s orders.

GDP will never stay above 3%.

— end —

I didn’t get any of those predictions wrong. But if you got 15 or more wrong, you might want to consider never saying anything about politics out loud again for the rest of your life. Just a suggestion.

Clinton supporter expresses surprise at his lack of prescience

Okay, okay. I know you are quibbling with a few items I included on the list. Maybe you think the bad news for Trump — such as the alleged Russia problems — will sink Trump eventually. We can revisit this list next year. But if you are wrong for three years straight — about almost everything Trump-related — please adjust your confidence in your predictive powers accordingly.

If you got 15 or more of those predictions wrong, please consider reading a copy of my book, Win Bigly, to learn how to use what I call the Persuasion Filter to predict better.

Why Black Lives Matter (BLM) and Republicans are Natural Allies (or should be)

One of the big changes in our national consciousness, thanks to President Trump, is that many of us are starting to see politics in terms of “deals.” We are also thinking about a growing economy. Compare that approach to the Obama/Bernie/Clinton worldview that is more about wealth transfer in a world of scarcity. For my purposes today, you don’t need to decide which approach is better. I only make the claim that we are more focused on the Art of the Deal than at any time in American politics. This is one of the many ways President Trump is in our heads.

And the deal-making mindset, along with some lucky coincidences, has created the greatest opportunity for improvement that the African-American community has seen in decades. At the same time, Republicans have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to earn a larger share of the black vote in 2018 and beyond. All we are missing is the right deal. Is there a potential deal that is good for President Trump and the GOP while also being good for BLM?

Yes. And it isn’t even hard.

I’ll get to that deal after some necessary context. (It’s worth your time.)

You probably remember that candidate Trump famously asked African-American voters during the campaign “What the hell do you have to lose?” It sounded like a weak offer when I first heard it. But combined with his deal-making approach to politics, you could also see it as an invitation to pitch some ideas. The door is open.

Some of you might recall that when Colin Kaepernick started the kneeling trend in the NFL, I publicly offered to help translate any ideas he might have for improving the lives of black Americans into “Republican language” so there would be some hope of persuading the group that held the most political power. I never heard any specific suggestions from Kaepernick. But as I often say, he gets full credit as a Master Persuader for capturing our attention and holding it. He has skin in the game, he broke no laws, and he turned a back-burner issue in America into a front-burner issue. I give Kaepernick an A+ for American activism. Was Kaepernick offensive to people who love the flag and respect the police? Absolutely. That’s why we paid so much attention. But he didn’t break anything except for the way we think, and that was his objective.

As of this writing, Kaepernick only got us halfway to where he wants us to be. He lacked specific suggestions for improvement. Black Lives Matter has been similar. They get high marks for attracting attention, but they have so far been more provocative than helpful. I need to pause here to tell you that BLM has a wide range of personalities and priorities in it. On one extreme you have folks who are anti-police, anti-borders, pro-violence, and other unhelpful positions. But other chapters support the rule of law, including support for police, and are looking for practical solutions to real problems. If you dislike the extremists in BLM, consider supporting the BLM leaders who are focused on peaceful and practical solutions. That’s the mindset that gave us Martin Luther King Jr. I think that worked out for everyone.

Black Lives Matter (NY Chapter), under the leadership of Hawk Newsome, just came up with a set of suggested improvements that can — with a little negotiating — appeal to both Democrats and Republicans. If both parties like what they see, Republicans have the stronger hand because they are in power at the moment. The tie goes to the party that can make things happen. Love him or hate him, President Trump does make things happen. And he likes making deals. In other words, BLM of NY is answering President Trump’s invitation with a “What do you have to lose?” offer of their own.

If you have the time to hear my persuasive pitch of BLM-NY’s ideas on video, see them here. For the full persuasive effect, watch the video before reading the “spoilers” that follow. But this blog post can be consumed without watching the video.

I contacted Hawk Newsome to see how I could help his cause after watching a video in which he flipped a crowd of Trump-supporters from haters to friends in about five minutes. It was one of the most impressive acts of persuasion I have ever seen. Watch it here and see what I mean. This isn’t the BLM you thought you knew.

Hawk shared with me an early version of his chapter’s suggested improvements for the country. Again, I was impressed. The suggestions were beneficial to Americans in general, not just the black community, although that group might feel they have the most to gain, and perhaps they do. This was the same sort of persuasion strategy that got President Obama elected twice. Obama emphasized his policies, not his color, and that approach allowed people of every ethnicity to support him. BLM of NY figured out how to do the same thing. They offer practical suggestions that are designed to be good for people in general. I can support that.

Prior to publication of BLM-NY’s suggestions, I ran them past a prominent Republican to see what he thought. To my surprise, the prominent Republican — who shall remain nameless for now — told me BLM was thinking too small. So he offered as an alternative some bigger themes that I’ll share with you first because these are quite compatible with BLM’s priorities.

A Prominent Republican’s Vision for Improving Black Lives (because they matter):

  1. Create safer neighborhoods to attract jobs and create optimism.
  2. Fix school bureaucracies in communities where students are failing.
  3. Create apprenticeships for unskilled adults
  4. Address the opiod epidemic directly and by improving the environment.

You probably think those are good priorities. BLM agrees. And if I took it further and asked you which group thinks Charter schools are a good idea, you might be surprised to learn that the answer is “both.” On the big stuff, and on much of the small stuff too, BLM is entirely compatible with Republican ideals. When you are trying to make a deal, it helps to start with the parts upon which you agree.

Now I’ll share with you the BLM-NY list of suggestions. These ideas go directly to improving the credibility of the police. Republicans want the police to be credible too. Republicans also like good data, the rule of law, voting participation, and legal decisions that are free of bias. That’s what BLM-NY is focused on too. Here’s their list. Notice that every suggestion is useful for citizens in general, not just one ethnic group.

Ideas from Black Lives Matter – New York

  1. Prosecute and jail police that falsify reports.
  2. Police must call an ambulance if defendant complains of illness.
  3. Voting rights for people in prison
  4. Independent prosecutors for police killings of unarmed civilians.
  5. Comprehensive national database of police shootings.
  6. New York holiday for Day of Remembrance for victims of police brutality.

I’ll discuss these points in order.

Prosecute and jail police that falsify reports.

I think most Republicans would agree that a police officer who falsifies a police report must be held accountable. Republicans like the rule of law, and they like honesty. So far, BLM and Republicans are on the same page.

Police must call an ambulance if defendant complains of illness.

You might not know that people in police custody have died while begging for medical care that was not granted. I think we’d all want access to emergency medical care if we were in police custody. You might see some abuses of the system, but I think we’d all agree this one is worth discussing.

Voting rights for people in prison

I’ve never understood why prisoners lose the right to vote. Voting makes people feel part of the system. It seems like one of the few psychological influences that can nudge law-breakers toward becoming law-abiding. Realistically, only a small percentage of convicted criminals would bother to vote. The prickly part is that most would (presumably) vote Democrat. But Republicans can compete for those votes, and should. A good start would involve taking the lead in returning the vote to that class of folks.

Independent prosecutors for police killings of unarmed civilians.

Why not try independent prosecutors for police shootings of unarmed civilians? You could test it in one city or more and see how it goes. Budget-wise, I suspect we’d be better off in the long run with this sort of credibility-improving process. Perhaps you’d get less after-verdict violence. It’s worth discussing, and probably worth testing somewhere.

Comprehensive national database of police shootings.

Republicans will argue that the data does not show police are more violent with black suspects. African-Americans will tell you their lived experience says otherwise. BLM-NY offers the only sensible way forward, recommending national standards for reporting police violence against unarmed civilians. Who hates better data?

New York holiday for Day of Remembrance for victims of police brutality.

New York can decide on whether or not it wants a Day of Remembrance for victims of police brutality. I think the idea as proposed is divisive, framing the situation as one in which police are the bad guys. The point of the suggestion is to keep the problem of police violence against unarmed citizens in our thoughts, but I’m sure there’s a more productive way to do that. For example, if BLM and the GOP find a way to work together on some parts of this list, no one will forget that anytime soon. I prefer focusing on the positives.

Now consider how perfect the set-up is for a win-win deal between African-American voters and the GOP. President Trump’s biggest political problem is the perception that he’s a racist. Improving the economy and the job market doesn’t fix that problem, although it helps. But taking seriously BLM-NY’s list of suggestions — in some negotiated and improved form — would be a game-changer.

President Obama was hugely popular among black voters, but there is a sense in the African-American community that he didn’t deliver. Democrats have no charismatic leader at the moment, and not much power at the federal level compared to the GOP. Never before has the GOP been in such a strong position to make a play for a good portion of the African-American vote. All they need to do to get the ball rolling is take BLM-NY’s suggestions seriously as a basis for a deal. And BLM-NY is making that easy by presenting practical ideas that are not race-specific.

I spoke with Hawk again yesterday and both of us had just watched the recent viral video of a police shooting of an unarmed man in a hallway as it had been recorded on the police officer’s body cam. When you see the video you can understand why the cop opened fire. The man was reportedly armed, according to the initial call to police, and refused to keep his hands where he was ordered to keep them. In this case, the body cam protected the police officer as well as the reputation of the police by showing us exactly how the tragedy unfolded. Hawk and I were left wondering if a greater focus on body cams for police would be a practical approach to building confidence between the black community and police. I don’t know the answer, but here again we see a practical idea that I assume Republicans can embrace.

And to that I say, why the hell not?
