Tilted in a big way toward comedy, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” offers Marvel an opportunity to show off its lighter side, after the operatic grandeur of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Black Panther.” It is also, on most levels, less appealing than its predecessor, a generally fun movie that doesn’t possess much bite.

First published in 1920, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s debut novel  This Side of Paradise  was a sizzling sensation that put the young American author on the map. This heart-rending romance is about a brilliant Princeton University student full of potential whose life is thrown into turmoil by desire. While in school he goes back to Minneapolis where he re-encounters a young lady whom he met as a little boy, and starts a romantic relationship. The book's initial printing of 3,000 copies sold out in three days. Virtually a record of the ‘Lost Generation’ in its college days, This Side of Paradise  is a devastating treatment of Fitzgerald’s characteristic theme of true love blighted by money and lust.

The Chef, the Designer, the Dish and the Setting: The Red Velvet Side of Life in Dubai

2015-11-10-1447148237-7201442-TAHR_TADD_EXTERIOR6_HR.jpg

The Dubai Fountain and neighboring hotel, The Address Downtown

Don’t know about you but hearing the words “red velvet” always makes me think of those wondrous events where mere mortals are kept away from the celebrities by velvet ropes. In the United Arab Emirates, there is no lack of premieres or celebrities, as highlighted by recent sightings that ranged from Jackie Chan to Brad Pitt (plus Angelina), Dennis Quaid, Malala and the entire Star Trek Beyond cast. Things are only bound to get steamier once the Dubai International Film Festival kicks off in early December.

Yet when I asked three Dubai-based master chefs to draw inspiration from the fashion exhibited as part of the Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience and create their own gourmet creations, I never expected that this style and taste experiment would turn into a kind of metaphor for life. And I definitely did not anticipate that a red mesh dress by Singaporean designer Max.Tan would be turned into an edible study in deconstructing, and then re-assembling, the perfect red velvet cake.

2015-11-10-1447148291-7353423-image11.jpg

I started out knowing full well that I would be awed by the wonderful ambiance of Downtown Dubai, now a must-visit tourist destination but also a gourmet and fashion mecca for any self-respecting jet-setting world traveler, and that the chefs’ creations would remind me why I love food — and those who prepare it with passion — so much. But what I didn’t expect was to find such distinct interpretations by three men who each represent the best the world has to offer. As chefs of course but also, most importantly, as human beings.

While seafood was conquered by chef Steve in part one of this series, dessert undeniably belonged to chef Abel Vieilleville, the Executive Pastry Chef for The Address Downtown. The wonderfully soft-spoken, Cannes native explained that when he went through the collections by the various designers, the red-mesh dress creation by Max.Tan, a design house based in Singapore, “inspired freedom in me.” And what a beautiful word that is, freedom. Chef Abel continued, “the design is really wide, the dress is made out of mesh, it is beautiful, and although like a structure that looks really fabricated, it’s really light.”

2015-11-10-1447148352-8730380-DSC_6067.jpg

Chef Abel has worked in the food industry for the past 24 years, after studying in the South of France. His parents owned a restaurant for 26 years and so, chef Abel explained, “I was brought into the business at an early age, always focused on dessert.” His first move away from French kitchens was to England, where he worked with Michelin-star chefs, and after working with Chinese-French fusion cuisine in the UK, decided to move to China, which he called, “a fantastic experience.”

When I asked the chef if he thought food to be an international language, he pointed to his time in China, where he said, “ninety-nine percent of the staff was Chinese, so we had a language barrier, yet people could understand better, through a dish, the vision of the chef.” Finishing with another gem, “food helps to communicate.”

His move to The Address Downtown was through what he calls “the stepping stone, of neighboring Oman,” but he admitted that he always wanted to come to Dubai, which he believes, “has the ability of becoming the city of the future.”

As far as those looking to join the culinary arts, chef Abel was kind enough to give away the secret of success by pointing out that, “as a chef you need to be passionate and give one hundred percent of yourself. Passion is not something that you learn, you cannot teach it.”

2015-11-10-1447148393-6475307-RedVelvet.jpg

Chef Abel named his architectural, stylized creation very simply “Red Velvet”. It is his homage to the beloved cake, possessing all the traditional ingredients, down to the cream cheese frosting, and the chocolate, contained in both the dome and in the small berry flavored flat squares and white chocolate flowers. The berry sorbet went through a whole theatrical production, which of course made the dessert even more spectacular, with the help of liquid nitrogen, poured on with giant insulated gloves.

2015-11-10-1447148463-4825014-DSC_6095.jpg

But once again, the proof should be in the pudding, and a dessert that looks splendid but doesn’t taste divine has no reason for being, in my humble opinion. Thankfully, one bite of chef Abel’s deconstructed, reinvented “Red Velvet” creation and I was hooked. With one spoon containing it all, from berries, to spherified pomegranates — think pomegranate caviar — to white chocolate flowers and sweetened, deliciously rich cream cheese, with its soothing flavor, and the powdered strawberries, I thought heaven didn’t seem like such a faraway place, after all…

2015-11-10-1447148505-4276079-TAHR_TADD_SPA2_HR.jpg

To end the day, I managed to book a treatment at The Spa at The Address. I got their 60-minutes signature massage, which combines aromatherapy and Swedish techniques. When my therapist introduced herself as “Jelly” I knew I’d found my own private sanctuary, a mixture between the spa of my dreams and the grown-up version of a candy store, though one surrounded by glamour, fashion and all the dates I could eat. Yes, because there are incredible Emirati dates in the relaxation room as you re-emerge from your massage — enveloped in a hot shoulder wrap , sipping cucumber/mint water and overlooking the beauty of Downtown Dubai.

For some famous last words, check out the YouTube video below to hear what chef Abel had to say when I asked him about his favorite dessert — you know, that go-to dish he turns to in those times of need, when even a sublimely talented, wonderful culinary artist needs some soul healing.

The Odd Side: Songs for the Fall

Welcome to The Odd Side, a column that explores the effects of Hip Hop’s transformation through new sounds.

It’s been a while since we supplied you with some good music to get the summer going. But now that it’s the Fall, the sound seems to change just like the seasons. While projects like Travis Scott’s Rodeo graced us into the times, there’s much more either dropping soon or on Soundcloud. The artists in today’s installment kind of add the vibes and style of the season, oddly. Taking out the heat and ferocity of the summer, and supplying music that fits the colder weather. Here’s a couple of songs for the fall.

Mac Miller – The Clubhouse

Recently, Mac Miller has been releasing a couple of singles from his anticipated project GO:OD AM, and they’ve been getting quite the attention on Soundcloud. The latest leaked single was “The Clubhouse”, a cut with a banging beat, DJ scratches, and a flow by Miller so fly it makes you feel like you’re on Cloud 9. Hope to hear more dope music from the Pittsburgh rapper this week.

Melo-Zed – Stimulus

HM&M Recordings is a Los Angeles record label that has been getting listeners hip to new age producers like Kaytranada, Gravez, and Ta-Ku. Now though, it’s this young 19-year old producer named Melo-Zed. “Stimulus” is one of his newest songs out of HW&W, and it sounds so damn cool. Zed’s new track has a Dilla-like bass line with a futuristic twist, that is until the beats switches up with a reggae-like kick. The sounds of what might be a Janet Jackson sample also adds a smooth element to the song, making it the track you might want in rotation at night.

Jordan Bratton – Frank

This New York artist has been recommended in a past installment of The Odd Side, but he once again deserves a spot in this one as well. Compared to his past singles, “Frank” seems to be a small switch up from the artist’s  usual sound, using a more heavy hitting beat than many of the other tracks in his repertoire. However Bratton’s vocals and unique lyrics still continue to be the main attribute to the single.

Goldlink ft. Louie Lastic – Movin’ On

Although this came out around the end of the summer, “Movin On” definitely is the cut to play now. The track is strongly influenced by Tupac’s classic song “I Get Around”, but VA producer Louie Lastic adds a modern spin to it. The chorus at the hook also gives the song some flavor as well.

Jarreau Vandal – Be Alright

Kendrick Lamar’s single “Alright” might be the song that people sing in the streets, but don’t sleep on this edit by this Soulection producer. “Be Alright” focuses more the crazy production, with the chorus keeping you interested in the buildup of the beat. The song also includes a keyboard and guitar to fill in and add the tones in the back as well.

He’s beautiful with gray eyes, tall, chocolate… and he’s worth fighting for. Meet Omari a gorgeous, hard working, twenty-eight year old man from the Southside of Chicago. No matter how hard he works at his job at UPS, it is never enough to take care of himself and his long-term girlfriend. After continuous pressure from his older cousin, Ching, Omari finally traded in busting his ass for working under Ching hustling three major blocks on the Westside. All is good as Omari juggles work and the drug game. That is, until Ching involves him in the murder of, who ends up being, the Governor’s nephew. As he dodges homicide detectives, Omari is also trying to dodge getting caught between two loves. He’s been committed to Aeysha for seven years, but is falling each day for Simone, an older more established woman who is at his every beck and call. After years of playing the side chick, Simone finally finds love that she thinks is all her own. Just as she settles into loving Omari, she finds out about Aeysha and her desperate mind begins to plot on how to finally win her man. Simone’s best friend, Tammy, thinks Simone is crazy as she herself is running from an obsessed ex-boyfriend who is persistent in trying to kill her. Tammy lives in hiding for months as she asks herself this burning question; how can a man love a woman with the same hands that he is willing to kill her with? As the murder investigation leads to arrests, the walls come down on these lovers. Murder, sex, and indictments lead to unforeseen tragedy and unexpected love.

10 Reasons Why You Need To Experience Afropunk Fest: Present By The Odd Side

One year ago, we took a trip through New York City to cover Afropunk Fest. The music festival, located at the Barry Commodore Park in Brooklyn, was something very unique compared to the several festivals we have covered. Armed with innovative street style, the love of music and open minds, concert-goers were able to come together and show a completely different side of culture for Blacks in this country. Along with an ever-growing yearly line-up that features superstars that represent it’s culture, the experience itself makes Afropunk a gem in NYC. One year later, the festival is expanding internationally. There was an inaugural festival in Paris as well as another that will happen in Atlanta on October 3rd.

There are several reasons why Afropunk is a one of coolest festivals during the summer, and we’re here to give you some dope reasons why you need to experience this weekend. Here are 10 reasons why you need to experience Afropunk Fest:

1. Afropunk’s yearly lineups are unique to it’s culture

Every year, Afropunk has supplied a lineup featuring artists that help empower the culture. From Danny Brown to Bad Brains, the festival always showcase a diverse group of music artists with similar attributes. There’s only one place you will find D’Angelo, Shabbazz Palaces, and HO9909 all in one place. This year, the lineup is far more stacked, including artists Lauryn Hill, Kaytranada, Kelis, Goldlink, and a hell of a lot more.tumblr_inline_nr4keegpzB1r1sixa_500

2. There’s some really good Hip Hop acts.

They might not be superstars like Rick Ross or Drake, but several rappers that come to Afropunk are great additions to the festival. Don’t think these are your normal rap acts either, you end up hearing diverse sounds and seeing some beautifully insane moments here. Afropunk is the type of place where many have seen hip hop performances ranging from Jean Grae to Das Racist. It is also the type of place where you see moments like this happen:

Afropunk

3.  The DJ’s are sick!

Along with a diverse lineup of artists comes a diverse list of DJs at Afropunk. The Gold Stage is where most of these destructive disk jockeys kill the turntables. From Samba, to Reggae, to Trap music, your ears will explore new terrains and will get you moving along with the other hundreds of people grooving. There’s nothing like a group of people getting more energized throughout one DJ’s set, no matter what genre of music it is. Once you get done with a sick performance, this is the place to be for breaks.

4. There are some legendary acts there

As said before, Afropunk brings in legendary musicians that help fire the culture. Every year there seems to be a incredibly extraordinary artist headlining the festival. Last year it was D’Angelo, the year before it was Chuck D and Questlove, the list goes on. The bigger this fest gets, the more innovative the headliners are. Really! Who would expect Grace Jones and Lenny Kravitz to have performances this year?

D' Angelo and the Vanguard at Afropunk 2014

5. There’s nothing but love here.

One major thing about this festival is that there are no barriers between festival goers. One of the most important things about Afropunk is that there is no type of hate promote on the grounds. They even have a couple banners to prove it. That means no homophobia, racism, “fatphobia”, you name it. None of that is allowed here, and it keeps the interactions fans positive.  You might just make a couple of friends in a mosh pit made to some band you never heard of.

6. Soulection will make an appearance this year (Lakim x Goldlink)

One of fastest growing music collectives online happens to be Soulection. From Sango to Esta, there’s a long list of artists that have contributed to bring an all new sound to modern music. Although Soulection won’t be as deep as they normally are in NYC, Lakim and Goldlink will be killing different stages for the squad. We’ve already encountered both artists in DC last month, so we already have high expectations for these two performances.

7. Don’t sleep on the rock bands

There might be some dope hip hop artists at this festival, but don’t shy away from the bands that perform there either. They provide some of the most energetic performances at Afropunk. There are some really good acts that come here every year too, like TV on the Radio or Bad Brains. The rock bands are truly one of the factors that make the festival full of life.

8. The street style here is dope

Looking at people’s clothes may not be the amped reason to go to Afropunk, but it definitely is a nice addition to the experience. The urban terrain gives several fans the opportunity to show out during the weekend. You might not find this many people with unique outfits in one place until next year. We anticipate it being even more cooler this year. There have been several publications that have mentioned Afropunk about the diverse street style alone.

9. Afropunk showcases a ton of art.

Along with the music, street style, and DJ’ing, Afropunk also showcases some dope art. Most of it is located at one spot on festival grounds, but you still come across some extremely dope images while you travel from stage to stage.

AfroPunk Fest 2014

10. Afropunk tries to take on social issues

Many people may be familiar with Afropunk because of its musical acts, innovative street style from festival goers, and the culture. However, this festival tries to also promote the importance giving festival goers knowledge about modern issues in our society. You’ll find a ton of different booths at Activism Row in the entrance of Barry Commodore Park. Not many festivals attempt to inspire people to actually stay informed about what problems are going on outside of them.

We will be at Afropunk once again this year to cover some the festivities. Keep it locked at AllHipHop for performances, street style, interviews, and much more.

This effects-heavy installment is the inevitable sequel to one of the more effectively spooky and financially successful horror films of the '80s. The Freeling family is trying to grapple with the devastation wrought by the ghosts and ghouls that destroyed their lives. Steve (Craig T. Nelson), Diane (JoBeth Williams), and their kids, Carol Anne (Heather O'Rourke) and Robbie (Oliver Robins), have been reduced to living in the home of Diane's mother, Jess (Geraldine Fitzgerald) because the insurance company refuses to believe what happened to their house. The Freelings are unfortunately unable to escape patches of unholy ground living in a house that is just as haunted as the last. The evil spirit of the mad cult leader Kane (Julian Beck) has returned in an effort to kidnap Carol Anne. After realizing what's happening, the Freelings call upon the psychic medium Tangina Barrons (Zelda Rubinstein) for help, and are aided by a benevolent Native American spiritualist, Taylor (Will Sampson).

Photographer, Felipe Vasquez, Shares New Photo Series About the Dark Side of Falling in Love (NSFW)

2015-08-14-1439521743-7373196-Chapter1BodyBetraysItself.jpg
Chapter 1 – Body Betrays Itself

Recently, I met with photographer, Felipe Vasquez. He gave me a peek at his newest project, Soliloquy, and we discussed love, vulnerability and possession. A photograph from each chapter of Soliloquy is included throughout the interview, the other images can be found at his website. To see more of his work, check out his instragram account @amphibian06.

2015-08-14-1439521848-3343465-Chapter2Purification.jpg
Chapter 2 – Purification

Phillip M. Miner (PM): It’s called Soliloquy. A soliloquy is a conversation, what conversation were you having?

Felipe Vasquez (FV): Traditionally, a “soliloquy” is sort of like a monologue, only that it functions more as an inner conversation, rather than a speech to an audience. I titled it this because the project works to me almost as a play. It is staged into chapters; each as a buildup to a new scenario. I worked on every segment in a stream-of-consciousness manner and later grouped them into a more cohesive storyline.

2015-08-14-1439521927-3713322-Chapter3Ascent.jpg
Chapter 3 – Ascent

The narrative explores the mental, physical and emotional effects of spirit possessions by creating a comparison to the act of falling in love; drawing upon a series of self-portraits that illustrate the notion of succumbing to the presence of another being, human or otherwise, to the point of absolute self-abandonment.

Soliloquy reflects my relationship experiences with men and how they’ve affected my life. But also, the more universal idea of commitment and how we can give in so selflessly and lose control over ourselves at such extremes.

2015-08-14-1439522012-9269826-Chapter4AnOfferingtoSaturn.jpg
Chapter 4 – An Offering to Saturn

PM: I think possession is an appropriate way to think about love.

FV: It’s a nihilistic way of thinking about it. I was talking to a friend and he said, “It’s interesting that you see love in that way because to me, it’s not about giving in entirely and becoming taken. It’s more about giving and receiving.”

Love, obviously, as any other aspect of the human experience, has many sides to it. We all navigate through life differently and bring in and take away things from one another, but I also think that love, in particular, is a tumultuous experience that is universally encountered in extremes. It is something we can all relate to.

2015-08-14-1439522078-9169403-Chapter5him.jpg
Chapter 5 – (him)

PM: Looking at it, the narrative focuses on the darker side of love.

FV: It definitely derived from a dark backbone. When I began working on the series, I was in quite a harrowing mindset. I was full of anger and anxiety and the focus became figuring out a way to transfer all that negativity into a substantial body of work. The references that were coming to me came from media that explored the brutality and the agony but also the tenacity of humanity. As I was going through the process, however, I determined I didn’t want the series to be so one-sided and I needed to give it a broader range.

Eventually, the pace became more organic and I included segments that would work as breathing time from all the tension. “Purification,” for instance, represents the idea of water cleansing a moment of sudden inhibition. While “Ascent” carries on that sense of relief by expanding on the cool tonality of its imagery. These two chapters are placed in the beginning of the series, as I wanted to provide the narrative with a sense of irregularity — a path that doesn’t run linearly, but rather erratically, to then pick up on a very chaotic speed to its climax. The way human relationships often function.

Prior to Soliloquy, I was coming out of some poisonous relationships that felt like a cycle where one bad situation could only be fixed by a worse one. This is undoubtedly the most autobiographical project I have ever created.

2015-08-14-1439522541-1016889-Chapter6Seed_.jpg
Chapter 6 – Seed

PM: You mentioned references. Who inspired you while you were creating this.

FV: Music is vital to me. It has always helped me solidify concepts and establish accurate emotive outputs within my creative process. With Soliloquy, I was inspired by the ferocious voice and compositions of Diamanda Galás and Margeret Chardiet’s gorgeous noise project, Pharmakon. But even more so, by the work of Austrian artist, Soap&Skin, whose emotionally charged music has served as a catharsis during some of the darkest periods I’ve endured.

I’m also very much influenced by film. I consider Lars Von Trier to be the greatest filmmaker of our time — a true storyteller unafraid to expose the vast spectrum of the human experience, and in this particular case, his film Antichrist was a big influence as was Andrzej Żuławski’s Possession.

2015-08-14-1439522609-3798143-Chapter6Seed.jpg
Chapter 6: Seed

I admire Matthew Barney and Marina Abramović because of their ability to use the corporeal to emote a large range of subjects. Barney’s take on sexuality, mythology, metamorphosis and the definition of gender, played a crucial role on the development of this series. While Abramović’ courageous and relentless use of her body as a form of expression, has consistently motivated me to challenge my own endurance and to eloquently channel that energy into art.

The most important aspect about the process of making Soliloquy was to pursue the idea of emotional transcendence through physical stimuli. Each time I entered the “stage,” I made it my ultimate objective to engage in situations where my body would be pushed to its limits. To access a place of exhaustion where the performance would deliver a moment of true emotional consumption.

2015-08-14-1439522450-5340830-Chapter7Penance.jpg
Chapter 7 – Penance

PM: Do you think being gay in a society that only recently accepted our relationships impacts our ability to have functional relationships?

I have experienced that in New York City things are enhanced and multiplied and more intense than they are in many places — I’m going to dare to say that. But I think in terms of relationships, you bring into this territory that is tricky as it is, every insecurity and fear that you have gathered in life. Most homosexuals grow up in an environment where it isn’t okay to be who you are. So you grow up with guilt and a burden that you now also have to balance with your partner’s. That, in addition to the baggage that society puts on us by telling us who to love and how to love them, becomes a very difficult dynamic.

This series is not exactly about identifying self-loathing or analysing my orientation, but my sexual-identity is as much a part of who I am as everything else. And though in my case this signifies being a homosexual, it is more so about general sexuality — the concept of carnal desire; the roles of dominance and submission; the heighten stages of euphoric romance, but also the voluminous depravities and the extents we can reach when we are overpowered by our feelings.

2015-08-14-1439522358-2840558-Chapter8RiteofLecheryandSuccumbingPartI.jpg
Chapter 8 – Rite of Lechery and Succumbing – Part I

PM: It feels to me that there’s a lot of vulnerability with this series.

FV: I knew from the beginning that I was going to bare it all with this project. I’ve done a lot of self-portraiture in the past that involves costumes and elaborate settings made to disguise my identity. With Soliloquy, I wanted a black backdrop that would set everything in a limbo, undefined and deserted, and therefore, place the spotlight solely on the character. The nudity was important to represent vulnerability and to emphasize on the primitive aspects of the human body.

There is a piece called “Seed,” where I’m covered in black, coarse hair. It is a point in which I wanted to highlight this concept of the body acting against you and literally bringing you to your knees under the presence of a higher power. At the end of this sequence, the character is licking the ground — embodying a sort of “master and servant” ideology where the struggle is both something tortuous and enjoyable; love being a difficult endeavor, sometimes devastating, but one that we also long for even at its darkest. The most vulnerable place a human being can be in.

Everybody Has A Tattoo, But Nobody Talks About The Side Effects

By Kathryn Doyle

(Reuters Health) – Tattoo health and safety regulations tend to focus on short-term risks like infections, but little is actually known about the long-term risks of living with ink under your skin, according to a new review in The Lancet.

“Almost everybody these days has a tattoo, and nobody is talking about the side effects of ink deposits,” said senior author Dr. Andreas Luch of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment in Berlin.

“There is no proof that these ink ingredients are safe, being injected into the body,” Luch told Reuters Health.

Between one and five percent of tattooed people suffer a bacterial infection, and some people can have allergic reactions to the ink, according to the report.

Those are short-term effects. It is harder to measure the long-term effects of ink since tattoo inks are in most countries classified as cosmetics, Luch said.

Since the inks are classified as cosmetics, their long-term toxicology can’t be tested in animals, Luch said. In his opinion, tattoo inks should be a completely different product category.

The skin barrier effectively keeps surface cosmetics out of the body, he said.

But tattoo ink is injected into living tissue, which contains blood vessels, nerves and immune cells.

“We need to assume that all of these ink ingredients, including preservatives, processing aids or whatever, will become systemically available in the body over time,” Luch said. “Regulation based on cosmetics is insufficient.”

Examining the bodies of the deceased who have had tattoos for decades has shown that up to 90 percent of the ink has disappeared from the skin, he said.

“We cannot answer the question what is going to happen with these inks,” whether they accumulate in organs over time or are excreted, Luch said.

Similar questions remain for laser tattoo removal: when the pigments are fractured and fragmented under the skin – where do they go – he added.

“In the U.S. the (Food and Drug Administration) has the authority to regulate inks, but is not currently doing so,” said Dr. Michi Shinohara, a dermatologist at the University of Washington in Seattle who was not involved in the review.

“Regulation of tattoo parlors and tattoo artists is left to the states, and the requirements for operating vary widely from very minimal (bloodborne pathogen training) to fairly complex (hundreds of hours of apprenticeship),” Shinohara told Reuters Health by email.

There are no industry standards for ink ingredients, the industry is minimally regulated, and few problems with tattoos are reported to authorities, she said.

Modern tattoo inks mostly contain organic pigments, but can also include preservatives and contaminants like nickel, arsenic and lead, Luch and his coauthors note. In one study in Switzerland, preservatives banned for use in cosmetics were found in 14 percent of tattoo ink samples.

Reactions tend to be more common from colored inks than from black and white ones, Luch said.

Tattooing has been going on for at least 5,000 years, but has become a modern trend, with roughly 120 million people in the western hemisphere having at least one tattoo, Luch said.

“The acute risks are well known,” including pain, bleeding, infection and allergic reaction, Luch said. “The tattooist at least needs to explain that something like this could happen,” he said.

But long term risks, like organ toxicity or cancer, are still unknown, he said.

“It’s an individual decision, we cannot tell someone not to get a tattoo,” Luch said. “I wouldn’t like to have a tattoo on my skin, but if a person likes colored skin, what can I say?”

It’s not necessary for people to stop getting tattoos, Shinohara said, “but I think people should be smart about it – research the parlor, ask about any recent problems, follow the aftercare instructions and report immediately to the tattoo artist and a physician for any problems that occur after tattooing.”

Life After Divorce Lies On The Other Side Of Fear

2015-07-09-1436470617-5279687-Stevenandmedesertyellowtop.jpg
Twelve years ago I was broken. I had just ended a 29-year marriage, sent my only kid off to college, and was left broke and unemployed, left with the cats and the dog to feed. Not exactly my life plan. I was alone for the first time in my life and filled with fear.

I sold the big house on the hill and started a new life in the city in a cute little condo that was to be my healing place. I traded the country club membership for a job and sold my Mercedes-Benz and bought a used BMW. I penned my book, “Single Past 50 Now What?” and was thrilled when it was published. I moved on with my life as best I could.

It took two years before I dated again. Broken hearts bring with them broken lives and battered self-esteem. It took time to mend, heal and get my head together.

When I did, I went about the business of rebuilding. The friendships I was graced with became lifetime alliances. Life was good again and I had learned how to sleep alone. A triumph of epic proportions.

I dated happily and smartly, laughed a lot and felt comfortable in my skin again. Everything in my world was just as I wanted it. Everything.

That’s about the time I received an email from an old high school friend of mine, a wonderful young man named Steven. We had been hangout buddies 40 years ago. I responded to his email and the conversations began.

We talked and it was as comfortable as ever. Much to my surprise I discovered that he had a crush on me back in the day (who knew?!). As the conversation unfolded he disclosed that he never married. He later shared that he had been waiting for me … all these years.

Who does that? He did.

We began long-distance phone dating (a lot more exciting than it sounds) for three months. The time came to meet in person (can we say “nerve wracking”?). I flew back home to L.A. and reacquainted myself with the man who was one of my favorite people in years gone by.

The next year and a half was filled with twice-a-month visits from Steven. Southwest Airlines loved us, as he booked his fares from L.A. to Denver months in advance. Even in record breaking snow storms, the man never missed a weekend. At the end of those months together, it was time for a commitment.

It wasn’t long before I followed this man across the country, with everything I owned in tow. I was about to take a second chance on love. If you knew me at all, you would know that I’m the LAST person to ever follow a man anywhere.

Despite my fear and my doubt, he was the risk my gut was telling me to take.

Here’s the thing, when I find myself sitting on my front porch in my rocking chair at the ripe old age of 93, I’d much rather scold myself for making a bad decision than simmer in regret for something I didn’t have the courage to try.

The truth is, life offers no guarantees. Risk is part of the bargain. Knowing when to jump in or run from, is a crucial life skill. If there is anything I know for certain, it’s that nothing is for certain.

My life has always been about going beyond my imagination. Trying things I knew I had little chance succeeding at. Risking failure for a chance at success. Happiness, I have found, is less about the destination and much more about the pursuit.

We’ve been together six years now. A lot of growth, love and learning. We are buying a house together and settling in for a little something called the rest of our lives. All this time my life was waiting for my courage to catch up.

I love this man. He is everything I deserve. He is my gift, my light and my comfort. It will be my honor to marry him, despite my previous conviction that I would never marry again.

This is what I’ve learned and want to share with you: Happiness can always be found on the other side of fear.

Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw and Oscar® winner Kathy Bates star in this remarkable true story of All-American football star Michael Oher. Teenager Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) is surviving on his own, virtually homeless, when he is spotted on the street by Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock). The Odd Side: The Free State

Welcome to  another edition of The Odd Side, a column that explores the effects of Hip Hop’s transformation through new sounds.

This week, we will explore some dope artists coming out of the state of Maryland. Maryland might not sound like the next big spot that megastars will come out of, but that shouldn’t stop you from finding about about the music that’s coming out around the area. Luckily for you, a plethora of artists from The Free State has popped up with amazing tracks consecutively on Soundcloud this week, and trust and believe you’ll have them on repeat.

Chris McClenney – Booty (On The Floor)

Chris McClenney was referenced on the last Odd Side post dedicated to Soulection’s best artists. This week, the Maryland-based singer has released a cover of what may have been the 90’s hit “Pump Up The Jam” by Technotronic. With an image from the classic sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel Air, “Booty (On The Floor)” merges together nostalgic 90’s deep house and McClenney’s unique style with the soul.

TEK.LUN – Benjamins (TEK.LUN Remix)

There has been several remixes of CVIRO & GXNXVS’ sick cut Benjamins, but Baltimore producer TEK.LUN might be one of the best top remix it. Starting with echoed vocals from the original to create an intimate vibe, this remix evolves in different ways throughout. At one moment you hear the instrumental move in an upbeat fashion. But when the beat switches, it’s like you’re hearing an brand new version of the same remix while still maintaining it’s cool vibe.

Abhi//Dijon – ECS

Although Abhi//Dijon “Twelve” is fairly old compared to the last two cuts, it was still refreshing to see it show up on my Soundcloud stream.  This Ellicot City singer has taken R&B into an experimental state, using a unique sound established from electronic music to reinforce both his calm vocals and smooth approach. If you’re trying to get into what R&B is becoming, cross your fingers and hope that this dude releases some new music.

Soduh/Black Zheep/ICce – Best Friend Is An Alien

We don’t know what’s been in the air in Baltimore, but the city has a very unique rap scene that many has not been hip to. “Best Friend Is An Alien” is a trippy banger that has been put together well. Soduh supplies the odd chorus and verse to the cut, while Black Zheep and ICce provide their auto-tuned verses also. The song doesn’t attempt to be any deeper than it is, however, it keeps your speakers bumping respectively.

What do you think about this week’s list of tracks? Let me know on Twitter/IG @VBrinkley513

Hip-Hop Rumors: Hov’s Family Tired Of Being Cast To The Side For Beyoncé?

There’s never really anything you can do to get in good with in-laws that will make them love you.

And Jay-Z and Beyonce’s case is no different.

Star Magazine is reporting that Hov’s fam feels some type of way about being left out of the couple’s exotic holiday getaway.

Sources tell Star that Jay Z’s clan is tired of Beyoncé keeping the rapper from his family.
“There are a lot of hurt feelings. His mother and siblings feel like they’ve been cast aside,” explains the insider who says that Jay’s elevator debacle with Beyoncé sister Solange only made things worse.
“While they dealt with the fallout, Bey and Jay were forced to close ranks, and it didn’t include his family.”
The last straw came this Christmas, when the couple ditched the in-laws for a holiday getaway to Thailand. “They were constantly posting photos online – it was seriously heartbreaking to his family,” says the source.
“Showing off to fans clearly was more important to Jay than spending time with loved ones who used to mean the world to him. And they’re blaming her.”

Sounds like a little bit if jealousy…but it may be hard for the Carter clan to share Hov these days…
