Is President Trump’s Nuclear Button Tweet a Sign of Insanity?

On CNN yesterday, Jake Tapper described President Trump’s recent behavior — including the President’s tweet about having a bigger nuclear “button” than North Korea — as abnormal and unstable. In other words, crazy.

Is it?

One folksy definition of “crazy” is that it involves trying over and over again a solution that has never worked while hoping it works next time. President Trump is doing something closer to the opposite of that. He’s doing something new, both strategically and verbally. To be fair, new things can be crazy too. But usually only if they don’t work. When a new and unexpected thing works out well, we call it genius. And that begs the question: Is President Trump’s approach to North Korea working?

We’re seeing economic sanctions on North Korea that have the support of the UN Security Council. That part is working, and it took diplomatic skill to make it happen.

But we also see satellite images of tankers smuggling oil into North Korea. The sanctions looked as if they were not effective until South Korea detained two tankers involved in smuggling oil to North Korea. Grabbing two tankers doesn’t do much in terms of limiting supply, but it does dramatically change the perceived economics of being a smuggler. And if grabbing two tankers doesn’t get the message across, South Korea can keep detaining tankers until the economics do change. North Korea would be willing to take big risks to break the sanctions, but the shipping companies on which they depend will not. Shipping companies will only participate in wrongdoing when they are confident they won’t get caught. That calculation changed when South Korea detained two tankers.

I told you months ago that the United States was going to war with corporations that trade with North Korea. We’re seeing that with the detained tankers. Whoever owns them is bleeding cash while they sit unused. And I speculate that our intelligence services are making life difficult for other CEOs and corporations involved in violating the economic sanctions. President Trump knows he doesn’t need to stop all of the smuggling and cheating — he only needs to increase the risk until it is uneconomical for the companies involved. We’re heading in that direction.

For the first time I can recall, time is on our side with North Korea. Every passing day sees North Korea’s economy shrinking while South Korea and America thrive. We’re effectively already at war and winning hard. The longer North Korea waits to get serious about negotiating, the weaker their hand.

A recent statement out of North Korea said, in effect, that they need their nuclear weapons as a deterrent because the United States is performing war games along its border. The way I interpret North Korea’s statement is that they are getting flexible. This is the first time I’ve heard North Korea speak of their nukes as conditional on what we do. In other words, they are open to denuclearizing if we reduce their perceived military risk. They haven’t said that directly. But that’s how I read it.

North Korea recently made friendly gestures toward South Korea, offering to participate in the upcoming Olympics and opening cross-border communications for the first time in a year. The trend we are seeing is that the tougher the sanctions and rhetoric from the United States, the more flexible North Korea is becoming.

But let’s talk about President Trump’s latest tweet about North Korea. Here is the text:

“North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the “Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.” Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!”

Here we see President Trump “pacing” (or matching) the hyperbolic rhetoric of Kim Jung Un. The two leaders are trash-talking each other like sports rivals. But what is missed in the hysterics over wording is that President Trump and Kim Jung Un are negotiating personally, albeit in public. And I think it is safe to say both players know they are being over-the-top with their trash-talk. The odds of a nuclear miscalculation based on anything said so far is effectively zero. And if the rhetoric ratchets up to a new level of hyperbole, I would still see no additional risk. President Trump and Kim Jong Un have demonstrated they know the difference between trash-talk and action.

The Persuasion Filter says this public trash-talking probably lowers our risk of a nuclear accident. If you don’t share the kind of personality we are seeing displayed by both leaders, you might miss the biggest variable in play here. What I see is two unconventional leaders already in conversation, getting a feel for the other, and on some level enjoying the exchange. You know President Trump loves this sort of verbal battle, and he’s good at it. Now keep in mind that North Korea is a tiny country that would normally be below America’s radar. But Kim Jong Un has the full attention of the President of the United States and is trash-talking with him in public. I have to think he enjoys the verbal jousting on some level, same as President Trump.

So while it might look to many observers as two crazy leaders heading for a nuclear showdown, to me it looks like two colorful characters who probably have a weird kind of respect for each other. Let me put it another way. Which of these two situations carries a greater risk of accidental nuclear war?

  1. Two nuclear foes who have no communication and are trying to interpret the actions of the other.
  2. Two nuclear foes trash-talking each other (with humor) in front of the world

I’ll take option two every time. When Kim Jong Un and President Trump are trash-talking in public with hyperbolic humor, they’re talking. The only risk is that one of them doesn’t understand the other is being over-the-top for effect. And I see no real risk of that. They both know what they are getting with the other.

I’d be worried if I saw Kim Jong Un yammering about the latest round of economic sanctions being an act of war. But instead he’s talking of participating in the Olympics in South Korea. That sounds like a leader who is trying to avoid war.

If you are a literal type of person who doesn’t recognize hyperbole or humor, I can see how this situation looks scary. But I promise you neither leader has a physical “button” on his desk, of any size, to launch a nuclear attack. And I feel confident that both leaders understand humor and hyperbole when they see it.

My view on all of this is that we are closer than we have ever been to a peace deal that results in a non-nuclear North Korea. Everything I see suggests President Trump is successfully “setting the table,” as he likes to say, for productive talks. Can the hundred-year plan for reunification be far away?

You might like my book, Win Bigly, because the alternative is to believe you are about to die in a nuclear blast.

Don’t Rush to the Divorce Lawyers at the First Sign of Infidelity

As she walked back from the train station, suddenly, he was there in front of her. “I had to come back and speak to you,” he said. She knew immediately what he was going to tell her. They got inside the house and he started crying. Incredibly, she found herself comforting him — “It’s OK — nothing’s going to come of this,” she reassured him.

He had succumbed to the charms of a prostitute by the lifts in a business hotel. It was nothing, she told herself. Meaningless. Not his fault. Good that he confessed. Good for trust.

But then, from nowhere, the pain started. Imagining her beloved husband with another woman, imagining him wanting her — she started to obsess. She asked for every detail of the encounter, trying to understand, to connect. She went, like a lost soul, to the hotel, she stood by the lifts, she went up to the floor he thought he’d been on — to try to feel part of it, not excluded, from this event in her marriage.

It didn’t work. She felt empty. The emotional pain became acute and she would swing from loving and forgiving to raging and sobbing. Eventually, it all wore off, he became less contrite, they carried on, and she was never allowed to mention it again. In five years they were divorced.

As divorce lawyers, we hear stories like this, or tales of longer love affairs, every day. But it’s rarely the immediate cause of the divorce. It’s usually somewhere in the past, followed by bad temper, unkindness, neglect or repeated incidents. People tend to be very contrite when first discovered in an infidelity and then, slowly, the self reasserts and they kick back. It’s usually women who make the move to exit the marriage: Men rarely pull the trigger to divorce, though they may check out in all sorts of other ways.

If you want to get past an infidelity — and in the wake of the Ashley Madison revelations there may be plenty of people right now trying to do that — you can take broadly one of two approaches.

One is, one might say, the French way. Eh bien, la maîtresse, the lover — turn a blind eye unless it gets too heavy. Marriage is a structure, economic, child-rearing, social — the sexual and romantic nuances can ebb and flow from all sorts of directions and a dignified ignorance is the best policy. Many, more than you’d think of the chocolate box, picture perfect marriages you see are based on an accommodation, often unspoken, of that nature.

The other is the more full-blooded, down and dirty, figuring out what the hell happened. Some people are innately philanderous, they do it for fun and don’t really feel bad about it. There’s not much to be done about that. But most go into marriage meaning to be good, loving their partners and believing they have an exclusive bond. Breaking that, especially the first time, is hard, and usually happens because something is going wrong inside the relationship.

It can be that the relationship has fundamentally changed. You started out having fun together, working, studying, going out drinking and laughing — then children came along, the mother stayed home, gave up work, was suspicious of babysitters — you stopped having things to talk about, you stopped having sex.

The father got closer to women at work, found in them the woman, like Kate Bush’s Babushka — “just like his wife before she freezed on him; just like his wife when she was beautiful.” Or the other way — the husband becomes grumpy, absorbed with work, cold and angry and the wife looks for kindness, appreciation, love, desire, in another, from the tennis coach to the old flame.

If you want to, look at that breakdown, that change, and think about whether you can both get back to being the person you each fell in love with. You probably don’t want to be cold, angry, child-obsessed, dull.

If you look deeply at yourself and you really try to feel for your partner, it may be that compassion will let you forgive. And if you can, if you can love each other enough to take it as part of the waft and weave of your marriage, then you’ve got something pretty strong.

Baltimore Police Department Posts Sign Mocking Freddie Gray’s Death?

Last week, the Baltimore Police Department, faced more public scrutiny after it was alleged that its media office fabricated threats of gang violence were made against its police officers.  These supposed threats just so happened to surface and were released on April 27, the same day that Freddie Gray was laid to rest. The death of Mr. Gray, at the hands of six arresting officers, has become a contentious issue.  It has even been proposed that a rough ride caused Freddie Gray’s severed spine.

Earlier today (July 3), it was reported that a picture of an inflammatory sign was taken on Tuesday, and that sign seemingly mocks the death of Freddie Gray. The Central District Police Station on Baltimore Street, was the area around which the photos which were taken. According to WBAL-TV, the back of a police van was left open and a sign read, “Enjoy your ride, cuz we sure will!”

How will the Baltimore Police Department respond to this latest development in the death of Freddie Gray?

There’s A Sign Women Are Ovulating, But Men Can’t Detect It

By Cari Nierenberg, Contributing LiveScience Writer
Published on 07/01/2015 11:38 AM EDT on LiveScience

Women’s cheeks get redder when they are the most fertile, but this color change is so subtle that it is undetectable by the human eye, a new study finds.

In the study, researchers in the United Kingdom took photographs of 22 women every weekday over the course of one month. After analyzing the photos, the researchers concluded that the women’s faces got redder around the time they ovulated.

“This is the first study to conclusively show that women’s faces do change in redness over the course of the menstrual cycle,” said Robert Burriss, a co-author of the study and a research fellow in psychology at Northumbria University in England.

But the researchers had expected to find a change in skin redness that was detectable to the human eye, because this might explain why previous studies had suggested that men perceive women’s faces as more attractive when the women are ovulating, Burriss told Live Science. Surprisingly, however, the study found that the changes in redness are too small for people to perceive, he said.

Past research had shown that men find women more attractive when the women are ovulating, and that men rate changes in women’s voices and body odor during ovulation as more attractive. This new study investigated whether changes in women’s facial coloring during their menstrual cycle might also explain how attractive they appear to men during ovulation.

The researchers used a specialized camera to take the photographs, and analyzed changes in the women’s skin color and skin luminance, which is a measure of its lightness or darkness, at two locations on the women’s cheeks. [5 Myths About Women’s Bodies]

The study found no change in the women’s skin luminance, but there were variations in facial color, according to the findings published today (June 30) in the journal PLOS ONE. The redness in a woman’s cheeks increased in the days before she ovulated and remained high until she began her next period, and then decreased rapidly after she started her period.

Attractiveness and fertility

Research has shown that men consider red facial skin more attractive, and researchers think the reason for this may be that the color suggests good health and youthfulness, Burriss said. The color of skin on other primate species changes in a similar way when they are the most fertile, he noted.

For example, female chimpanzees have swollen red bottoms at peak fertility as a clue to attract male chimps looking to mate.

But humans might not “advertise their fertility” the way that chimps and other species do, Burriss said. The benefit of concealing ovulation in women might be that it promotes relationship commitment, he noted.

“If men don’t know when women are fertile, they stay interested in the relationship,” Burriss said. In species where the timing of ovulation is obvious, such as chimps, males often ignore nonfertile females, he noted.

Some studies have suggested that women may advertise their fertility by becoming more flirtatious, but they do so only with men they find attractive. Other research has shown that women may make more attempts to enhance their appeal near the time of ovulation by wearing more revealing, stylish or red clothing.

A next step in this current research may be to determine whether skin-color changes are more pronounced in some parts of the face than in others during ovulation. For instance, future studies could look at whether the lips have more dramatic color changes than the cheeks do, Burriss said.

One weakness of the study is that it included mostly Caucasian women, so it’s unclear whether similar patterns of skin variation during the menstrual cycle would be observed in women of different skin colors.

Don Lemon Holds A Big N-Word Sign On CNN

CNN anchor Don Lemon sparked a controversy — and perhaps a new meme — on Monday night during an attempt to engage his audience in a debate on race.

Capping a day in which South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) called for the removal of the Confederate flag from the grounds of the state capitol, Lemon held up a Confederate flag of his own and asked viewers, “Does this offend you?”

But it’s what he held up next that has everyone talking and tweeting.

(NOTE: The following contains offensive language.)

In a podcast interview that aired on Monday, President Barack Obama used the word “nigger” during a discussion on race. That prompted Lemon to hold up a large sign with the word “NIGGER” on it, and ask his audience, “Does this offend you?”

The unusual segment caused Lemon to trend on Twitter, but probably not in the way he wanted: The trending phrase was “Has Don Lemon Lost His Goddamn Mind?” due to a Gawker story on the segment with the same headline (which includes a poll where readers could answer the question).

Boing Boing joined in, asking Twitter user Darth to get busy with Photoshop and transform Lemon into a meme:

Other Twitter users added images of their own:

Mom With Breast Cancer Says ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Saved Her Life: ‘That TV Show Was Probably My Sign’

An Israeli woman is crediting ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ with saving her life after an episode of the medical drama prompted her to seek a second opinion about a lump in her breast.

Two years ago, Sarit Fishbaine visited a breast specialist to get a check-up. The doctor told her that she had “lumpy breasts,” but assured her that she “had nothing to worry about.”

“I was 34 years old, healthy and nursing my third child — any lumpiness, [the doctor] said, was probably due to milk collecting in one area of the breast and the issue would likely subside once I stopped nursing,” Fishbaine told Yahoo! News.

Six months later, however, after she had stopped breastfeeding, a lump in Fishbaine’s left breast did not go away. She initially dismissed it as nothing, but warning bells sounded after she caught an episode of “Grey’s Anatomy.”

“In the episode, a young mom arrives at Seattle Grace Hospital for a mastectomy after her breast cancer had been mistaken for milk collecting in her breast. I couldn’t fall asleep that night — it felt like a huge warning sign,” she told Yahoo!

The very next day, Fishbaine made an appointment to see another breast specialist.

This time, the doctor sent her for an “urgent mammogram and biopsy.” It was soon discovered that Fishbaine had Stage 3 breast cancer, which had spread to her lymph nodes.

“I started six months of chemo right away and after that I had surgery, I had a mastectomy and then I had radiation therapy so I got the full package,” Fishbaine told NBC News. “I love ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and I love watching TV and I think God works in mysterious ways and that watching that TV show was probably my sign.”

Fishbaine, who lives in Kvutzat Yavne, a religious kibbutz in Israel, is now cancer-free. She says she’s getting reconstructive surgery and working to “rebuild” her life.

On May 16, Shonda Rhimes, the director, producer and screenwriter of “Grey’s Anatomy,” shared Fishbaine’s story on Facebook.

“Humbling,” Rhimes wrote.

Posted by Shonda Rhimes on Friday, May 15, 2015

Fishbaine isn’t the first in her family to have a story go viral. As The Times of Israel points out, Fishbaine’s dad — Sydney Engelberg, a professor who teaches at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem — won the hearts of netizens earlier this month after a photograph surfaced of him holding a baby during a lecture.

“Dad, you’re the best!” Fishbaine wrote on her Facebook page at the time, per a Times translation.

Cannabis-Themed Restaurant’s Sign Is On Point

A Denver location of Cheba Hut, a chain of marijuana-themed sandwich shops, threw down the gauntlet recently with a sign poking fun at a neighboring health food store.

Natural Grocers’ billboard advertises its chickens are free from antibiotics and genetically modified feed. “Our chickens don’t do drugs or GMOs,” it says.

Cheba Hut, which sells toasted subs in sizes like “nug,” “pinner” and “blunt,” fired back on its sign with: “Our chickens do drugs.”

The sandwich shop location opened several weeks ago, according to The Denver Post, and briefly had a sign posted during its construction that said, “THIS S**T IS TAKING FOREVER.” It was replaced after 12 hours with a sign reading, “SO CLOSE YOU CAN SMELL IT.”

Marijuana activist Sean Azzariti tweeted the photo of the billboard above on Thursday. Azzariti, an Iraq War veteran, was the first person to buy legal pot in Colorado.

Satan Demanded Equal Rights, Says Knoxville Baptist Tabernacle’s Controversial Sign

A Tennessee church posted a controversial message on its billboard over the weekend that said, “Remember Satan was the first to demand equal rights.

The Knoxville Baptist Tabernacle removed the sign — and denied it was targeting any single group — but many who saw it were bothered by the implications.

It’s clearly a sign that was meant to offend a particular community — the LGBT community,” Andy Henry told WBIR. “Because of (the church’s) lack of foresight, they ended up offending everybody who had ever fought for equality or civil rights in general.”

Many also railed against the sign on social media.

“As a Christian, I find this highly offensive, these kinds of signs and messages are exactly the reason why people are turned off by Christianity,” Stephanie Settlemyre wrote on the Facebook page of local news station WATE.

“I am still trying to figure out what the message on the sign has to do with unity,” posted David Rambo. “Can someone enlighten me? And we must remember too that the Bible tells us to let our words be seasoned with salt. It doesn’t say let your words be seasoned with shock value.”

But Pastor Tony Greene told the station he wasn’t trying to offend with the sign.

Our sign referencing Satan demanding his equal rights to ascend into the heavens and be God was simply ‘I’ and all about that individual,” Greene said. “It was not a statement against any one group in particular, you know what about the rights of the unborn babies, the rights of children, the rights of everyone?”

After the outcry, the sign was changed to say: “Glad you reading, did not intend to offend, we all need Christ.”

Prank Changes Highway Sign To Reference ‘Christmas Vacation’

“National Lampoon” fans traveling for the holidays got quite the surprise this Christmas.

New Jersey’s Garden State Parkway got hit by a prank on Thursday when someone changed the highway’s exit for Clark and Westfield to read “Clark Griswold,” the name of Chevy Chase’s character in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.”

NJ.com reports State Police Sgt. Gregory Williams confirmed pictures of the sign were not Photoshopped. It actually happened.

The exit sign was later fixed by the Turnpike Authority, but not before travelers got a good laugh. The prank was such a hit that it even started trending on social media.

The joke isn’t the first time we’ve seen movie-themed pranks. A ‘Birds’ prank once put unsuspecting beach goers in the middle of a Hitchcock movie and Improv Everywhere even had a real life Harry Potter visit New York Penn Station looking for Platform 9 3/4 (Good luck doing that in rush hour, bruh). In any case, it’s apparent the pranksters gave some holiday travelers the hap-hap-happiest Christmas ever.

Let Your Sun Sign Help You Avoid Scaring Him Off!

Let Your Sun Sign Help You Avoid Scaring Him Off!When spoken by a woman, the words "I'm exhausted" are practically more offensive to Aries men than armpit hair. Going on and on about the minutia of your day can be tedious for him, and it won't matter if you look like Scarlett Johansson — he'll still be turned off.
