Deep in the San Fernando Valley, behind the train tracks and amidst dilapidated warehouses, was rock n' roll's best kept secret. Sound City, America's greatest unsung recording studio, housed a legendary, one-of-a-kind recording console, and became the birth place to the seminal albums that defined 20th century music. Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Rick Springfield, Tom Petty, Nirvana, amongst many others, all put magic to tape within these walls. It was Rock n’ Roll hallowed ground.

Directed by Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) and featuring interviews and performances by the iconic musicians who made their careers in the studio, SOUND CITY tells the story of real rock n'roll history, and celebrates the human element of music, as Grohl gathers some of rock's greatest artists to collaborate on a new album. Using Sound City's legendary analog console, together they continue to create musical miracles in a digital world.

360 Sound: The Columbia Records Story – Dave Marsh

360 Sound: The Columbia Records Story

Legends and Legacy

Dave Marsh

Genre: Music

Publish Date: October 1, 2012

Publisher: Columbia Records

Seller: TRAILER PARK INC.

Dave Marsh’s Legends and Legacy  represents a condensed history of Columbia Records at its best. Its relationship to Sean Wilentz’s book,  360 Sound: The Columbia Records Story , is complementary, but not parallel. Sean’s book is the objective story, and mine, the subjective one. This groundbreaking eBook contains 90 second sound samples of all 263 tracks. Marsh chronicles the history of the label with 263 of the most important recordings over the past 125 years.  Steve Barnett conceived “a collection of the best, not necessarily the biggest.” Thus, some big hits are absent while many relative obscurities are present. Yet, we hope, the fundamental artistic achievement of Columbia as a company is represented in every area: classical, rock, jazz, blues, Broadway, country, dance, soul and R&B, gospel, spoken word.  Another restriction, this one more arbitrary, is that no performer has more than three selections. The goal in making those multiple selections is to express the artist’s development or, in the case of, say, Duke Ellington or Bob Dylan, the multiple facets of the artist’s work. There are ten performers who, for one reason or another, we felt needed three selections to accurately represent them. The emphasis is on performer—the main credited artistic presence in the music. There are at least four songs written by Dylan, his own three plus one by the Byrds, and Benny Goodman and Leonard Bernstein are represented five times each because of work in various collaborative projects.   Another choice was to use the range of music that Columbia purchased from other companies, including OKeh and the American Recording Company, up through the acquisition of ARC in 1939. Because the goal is historical, we didn’t divide the material by genre. Columbia was never a chamber music label or a pop vocalist label, or a country, disco, rap, Broadway, rock, blues, R&B, or swing company. It released all of these kinds of music (and a few more) as they presented themselves to be done. So we offer you Columbia in 1956, as the home of honky tonk (Johnny Horton, Ray Price), pop (Doris Day), jazz (Duke Ellington, Errol Garner), show tunes ( My Fair Lady ), orchestral (Isaac Stern with the Philadelphia Orchestra), and orchestral theatrical music ( Candide ), plus Guy Mitchell, whose “Singing the Blues” might be claimed as pop, rock, or country. There is no greater tribute to Columbia imaginable than the excellence within all these musical categories. One of the marvels of digitization is that you can easily program the collection to take you to all the jazz tracks or all the blues or show tunes, if that’s your preference. For musical omnivores, which is a category inclusive of everybody involved in creating the collection, it’s more fun to think of “Better Git It in Your Soul” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” being recorded just two weeks apart. However you choose to listen, we hope that  Legends and Legacy  adds to your appreciation of what treasures reside in Columbia’s archives, and adds to your appreciation of the historical story woven by  360 Sound.  If you have a tenth the fun I did in compiling it, you’ll rejoice in these riches and hit repeat when it’s over.   –Dave Marsh What's New in Version 1.0.1 – widget performance improvements

Sound of the Drums

A researcher arrives in Borneo to gather data for his thesis. Accompanied by his trusty guide, he seeks out a very remote locale for researching the
mating behavior of the giant rat of Sumatra.

Around dusk of the first day, he’s sitting by the campfire with his guide when in the distance, he hears tribal drums. They get louder. The guide
announces, “I don’t like the sound of those drums.”

The dusk turns evening. The drums get louder. The guide says, “I really don’t like the sound of those drums.”

Evening turns to dead of night. The drums get louder and louder, until it is obvious that the drummers must be quite close. The guide says again, “I
really don’t like the sound of those drums.”

Suddenly the drums stop, and a voice from the darkness cries out, “Hey man, he’s not our regular drummer!”

Ellie Goulding Blames Alleged Lip-Syncing On ‘The Sound Guy’

Ellie Goulding‘s alleged lip-syncing scandal is turning into one hell of a something.

The incident happened Saturday at the Australian Football League pre-game show. There, Goulding was supposed to perform “Love Me Like You Do,” but the song seems to play on without her.

Fan outrage ensued. And, after that, it was Goulding’s turn.

The singer sent out a series of tweets about the incident. In one, she calls out her haters:

In others, she explains she wasn’t feeling well. OK, y’all?

And, finally, she called out the sound guy.

After Ashlee Simpson’s lip-sync incident, she tried to blame it on her drummer, while on the other hand, Beyoncé just admitted to hers at the president’s inauguration.

Is there a lesson there? Eh, maybe. But we don’t have time to think about that. Not when there’s a rogue sound guy on the loose!

Love At First Sound – AUDRA

Vegas born, Chicago raised artist Love At First Sound has been waiting on this day for over four years. Building up his resume, Love has been crafting his skills during this time, producing and writing music for himself and others, honing in on what exactly moves his sound forward. It’s all come down to this, and without hesitation he presents us with his brand new project, “AUDRA”.

With a proper mix of rapping and singing, the young artist, takes total control here, producing all of the project’s music with the exception of one track. Mixed by Royce Lagard, “AUDRA’s” off-kilter instrumentals backed by boom-bap drums and somber melodies captures exactly what separates Love from everybody else. Stay tuned for plenty more from the multi-talented artist as he continues to stand out and leave a mark in the game.

George Mason University Students Use Sound To Stop Fires [VIDEO]

A pair of seniors at George Mason University in Virginia have invented a device that uses various levels of sound frequencies to extinguish flames. In other words, these guys are aiming booming bass directly at fires to put them out.

Viet Tran and Seth Robertson, both who are graduating from GMU’s Computer Electrical Engineering program this coming may, unveiled a video back in February via the school’s YouTube account. The students explain how the device, which looks a lot like Megatron’s arm-gun, is aimed to essentially break apart the blaze and end it.

Now having gone viral with well over 2 million views, Tran and Robertson are science rock stars at the moment, even though their device isn’t quite ready for prime time yet. A local Washington area outlet spoke with the gentlemen, and it appears the rest of the nation is catching up with them as well.

Tran and Robertson’s device, which has the working name of the “wave extinguisher,” was examined on the N4GM website and gives a bit more detail about the ambitious aims the students have for the sound extinguisher.

From N4GM:

Their new fire-fighting solution works with sound waves, to speak English, by pushing low frequency sound waves “30 to 60 hertz range” to the flames you can separate the oxygen from the fuel. The fire has a triangle of needs: Heat, Fuel and Oxygen. And simply by taking any of these needs away, you can put out the fire. What wave sound does to this triangle is to bring air (Oxygen) back and forth which keeps the air away from fire but in molecule levels. The fire will act like a cat going after a laser pointer light and that is all it takes to cut off the oxygen from the fire.

But the inventors have even more dreams for their new flagship, Washington post reports: “Robertson and Tran envision their technology being used to put out fires in homes — and in the wild. If properly scaled, sound-wave extinguishers would eliminate the need to douse forests in chemicals or waste untold gallons of water”. But that’s still a long way away.

Tran and Robertson’s have filed a preliminary patent application for the wave extinguisher. And how’s this for ingenuity: the device only cost them $ 600 bucks to make. Can we say “ching-ching” in the coming years should they clear the patent hurdle?

Watch the video from George Mason University students Viet Tran and Seth Roberston below. Hit the following page to see WUSA-9’s report from last week.

Known as "The SoM 7," they formed their own sort of family over the months of making the musical. Their parents befriended one another as the young performers traveled to Austria for filming, and the actors themselves have remained close for decades.

How Captain Von Trapp Chose Who to Marry on ‘The Sound of Music!’

The hills are apparently still alive as The Sound of Music celebrates its 50th Anniversary this month. There’s been a recent discovery of a never seen before authentic “Pros and Cons” list inside the props box from the movie set. It’s an actual chart that Captain Von Trapp made to help him decide which woman he should marry and become the new mother of his 7 children. Let’s peek, shall we?

Maria VS Baroness Elsa

Baroness Elsa

PROS

1. She’s got that classy, reserved icy blond, Austrian nobility thing going on. I’m up for the challenge of making her bleat like a mountain goat!

2. Says wise and profound things. “Somewhere out there is a lady who I think will never be a nun.” I wonder what she’d say if she knew I was hoping for a nun who will never EVER be a lady?

3. Easy to end a date with. You don’t have to launch into a whole song and dance routine, “So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, au revoir, sayonara, shalom, etc.” It’s just “bye-bye bitch.”

CONS

1. Not a performer and she’s a bit selfish. I doubt she’d walk out to finish my song for me if I were to have an emotional break down on stage in the middle of some lyrics about a flower, which I know like the back of the hand of the Swiss Miss hot cocoa girl.

2. She doesn’t really care for yodeling. Which means my best joke will be lost on her. “Knock-knock. Who’s There? Lil Ole Lady. Lil Ole Lady Who?” Ha ha ha!

3. Given half a chance, she’ll send all 7 of my children to Boarding School. Wait, this goes on the pros list.

Fraulein Maria

PROS

1. I definitely would know how to handle a problem like Maria. I fantasize about being her personal troubleshooter.

2. Has a mathematician background, is good with numbers and can count like nobody’s business. “You are 16 going on 17.” Maybe one day she’ll star in a movie called “10” and introduce me to Bo Derek.

3. Won’t be a chronic dieter like my buddy’s wives. The only scales she’s obsessed with are Do-Re-Mi.

4. I love a woman who’s easy to buy for on Valentine’s or Mother’s Day. I have my list for Maria for the next 5 years — Bright copper kettles, Crisp apple strudel, Warm woolen mittens, etc. And I don’t even have to buy fancy giftwrap (brown paper packages tied up with strings) Easy to please. Aww screw it. Something tells me she’d be just as happy if I didn’t cut the whiskers off kittens.

5. Somewhere in her youth or childhood, she must’ve done something good. She must deserve me!

6. Ever see anyone blush like that? I bet she’ll make a beautiful blushing bride. Of course that could be because the train on her wedding gown will be so long and heavy, half of Salzburg will have to carry it down the aisle for her.

7. Whenever there’s a thunder and lightning storm, she’ll invite strange people into our bed. Mmm, kink is one of my favorite things.

CONS

1. She brought music back into the house. And now my kids play the Top 40 at decibels that would blow the roof off a Nazi regime.

2. Obsessed with puppets. Which means she thinks she can pull my strings.

3. She’s not great with names. Keeps forgetting “Kurt.” How will I feel if one night in bed she moans (off key) and says, “Mmm, that feels so good. God bless you, Whatsyourname?”

4. Tea, a drink with jam and bread. Seriously woman? Every single solitary time? I’m a Starbucks shareholder myself.

5. Hates whistles. I suppose that twisted Snow White fantasy I have of her singing, “Just Whistle While You Work” while sweeping the front porch in a Nun’s habit is out of the question?

6. She might force me to wear boxers she stitches from our dining room blinds. Yeah, but that’s an easy fix. Sell her Singer. It’ll be curtains for that sewing machine of hers!

Hey! As long as I’m considering Thrifty Recycling Movie Heroines, I know a racy raven-haired vixen who also made her gown out of the living room drapes. Maybe there’s a 3rd option here. Who says I can’t be a Cross-Film Actor and marry . . .

Scarlett O’Hara

PROS

1. That 18 inch waist 2. Never worries about anything — she’ll think about it tomorrow. We all know what “it” is. Heh heh.

CONS

1. Oh who the hell cares anymore? Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.

Any woman who can tilt her head like this without a neck ache is the one for me!

Comedians Sound Off On Jon Stewart Leaving ‘The Daily Show’ At The ‘Night Of Too Many Stars’

What do some of America’s biggest comedians think about Jon Stewart leaving “The Daily Show”? When Stewart hosted the taping of Comedy Central’s fifth “Night Of Too Many Stars” recently, comics opened up about his decision to leave his longtime post and spend more time with his family. The biennial event benefits autism.

Some comedians on the red carpet for the event’s taping Feb. 28 disagreed on just how many stars is “too many” — “Weird Al” landed on a firm “85” while Sarah Silverman settled on a more conservative “no more than three” — but everyone said replacing Stewart will be a difficult task. They also had some very different suggestions for what he should do in his upcoming free time.

Find out what stars like Amy Schumer, Jim Gaffigan and Gilbert Gottfried had to say about Stewart’s decision below and watch the “Night Of Too Many Stars” broadcast and live telethon at 8 p.m. Sunday on Comedy Central.

Visit NYC4A to donate to autism programs or text “STARS” to 50555 to donate $ 10. Comedy Central has details on donating here.

360 Sound: The Columbia Records Story – Dave Marsh

Dave Marsh - 360 Sound: The Columbia Records Story artwork

Tourists stand in front of the Leopoldskron Palace where part of the film 'Sound of Music' was shot, in Salzburg, Austria on August 1, 2014For almost 50 years, "The Sound of Music" has captured the imagination of movie-goers and musical fans with its catchy tunes and lovable characters set against the stunning Austrian Alps.
