A Gay Dad Sounds Off On Why Mike Huckabee Is Choking On Those Rainbow Doritos

My sons love Doritos. Jesse is a Nachos Doritos guy, and Jason, always his own man, loves the Ranch flavored.

I love the It Gets Better Project. They have provided inspiration and tangible help for teens at risk for suicide. It is a cause that no one in their right mind could be against. Yes, Mike Huckabee, you can take that for all it’s worth — you’re an idiot.

The recent campaign in which Doritos sold bags of rainbow chips to raise money for the It Gets Better Project brought smiles across our household. The campaign went well and before we could get on the computer to order our special bag, it was over. Sold out.

Mike Huckabee, a financial wizard of the Bigotry Industry has stepped in to demonize the efforts however. Huckabee does this under the guise of being “Christian.” He claims that Christianity is important to him. Unfortunately, few have done so much harm to the true precepts of Christianity as has Mike Huckabee. I would go so far as to say that Huckabee is to the heart of Christ what Judas Iscariot was to Jesus. He betrays it with a kiss.

The Huckabee Hate Rainbow: No matter what Christian value he tramples, whether it is abuse of children, incest, dereliction of duty or feeding a rich man’s greed, Mike Huckabee is for it, as long as it is anti-gay.

A rich man donates to hate, Huckabee organizes a campaign to make him richer. A homophobe incest abuser is found out, Huckabee rationalizes away all he has done. A woman dishonors her office and tries to humiliate loving families, mocking them for wanting to be married, and there is Huckabee holding her hand in front of a stolen rock anthem. Now, Huckabee is attacking an organization that has saved the lives of thousands of teens. All of this done under the banner of “Christianity.” If you believe him, Huckabee press has gutted the soul of Christ of its love and compassion and replaced it with bigotry and homophobia.

“Meet your new sick partner,” Huckabee sends to Doritos, framing the It Gets Better Project as a “hate group.” As he does so, he tweets to his legion “Stand by me,” otherwise translated as “send money.”

How does Huckabee justify this categorization of an organization that is so profoundly good as being something so heinously bad? Two words: Dan Savage.

Dan Savage loathes Huckabee. Dan Savage is also famous for loathing Rick Santorum. Both those men, and others who have received Savage scorn deserve exactly what they got. Dan’s tactics are not gentle, nor are they the type that will be discussed at the family dinner table. Dan Savage is the LGBTQ version of Donald Rumsfield. He embraces “Shock and Awe.” He seeks to appall and disgust the card-carrying homophobes to their pearl-clutching cores. He succeeds.

Savage made a recording, not for the faint of heart, that turns a Savage/Huckabee handshake into a sexual chronicle would make even the most sexually free go “Ewww.” For the sexually repressed, it just makes their head explode. You can see what I meanhere. Of course, taking that piece of Savage’s work and equating it to what is being done at the It Gets Better Project, is like taking mainstream Christianity and comparing it to this.

Exploding heads are a good thing for Huckabee. He has long learned that when a homophobe gets irate, he or she goes for their wallet. So as Kim Davis no longer is of use to him, he has now taken aim at the corn chip.

As he does, so have I, in my own letter to Doritos.

Dear Doritos,

It was with great joy that my family and I saw your latest campaign “There is nothing BOLDER than being yourself” campaign. I am happy for your success and the contribution you have made to the It Gets Better Project.

That success is not without cost, obviously. You have earned the vitriol of the people of a certain mindset, particularly those who are followers of Mike Huckabee.

Huckabee has publicly addressed you and attempted to integrate your campaign with an attack made on him by Dan Savage. The two events are non-sequiturs.

While Dan Savage came up with the idea for the “It Gets Better” inspiration to save lives, his editorials and the It Gets Better Project organization are unrelated entities.

That Huckabee does not understand the Savage piece about him is irrelevant to your efforts. Huckabee missed Savage’s intent on the recording. Savage has an in-your-face X-rated style undisputedly. He sought to show that homophobic oppression is as vile and disgusting to families such as mine as descriptive sexual concepts are to Huckabee.

There is a big difference between the harm of Huckabee’s rhetoric and that of Savage, however. While Huckabee may be shocked at Savage’s tone and verbiage, Huckabee’s parents will not walk in finding him cutting himself or reaching for narcotics. Huckabee’s loved ones will not wake to find out that he had gotten up early that morning and stepped in front of a train.

The victims of Huckabee have done exactly those things, and it is to them that the It Gets Better Project makes its outreach.

So thank you for your small campaign. I am confident that the viral stir it has made within progressive circles will help drive your business up. The backlash you are getting from those on the other side will die down. As they write out their protests on their Apple devices, post them on Facebook, they will soon be informed that both those entities have been far more LGBT community progressive than Frito Lay has been able to be.

While this note is a “thank you” letter, I actually mean it to be a letter of request.

Eat your own chips. More specifically, please take your own campaign slogan to heart. You encourage the eaters of your limited run colored chips to be BOLD.

Please, Doritos, be bold yourself. Put your rainbow chips in wide circulation. Don’t just let this be a limited campaign for the benefit of social media and a single check to the It Gets Better Project.

Let this be a message that American families see on each trip to the grocery store. Let the teen who is contemplating suicide because they fear the homophobic reaction of the world around them, that Mike Huckabee would prefer they live in, see the chips that tell them they are not alone.

As Huckabee tries to hijack the narrative and choke us all with homophobia, grab it back, and take it to the next level.

Do it. Be BOLD.

Huckabee’s hate then won’t have a chance. The mass crunching on a global scale will drown it out as a new brand of love hits the scene… one with a hint of spice, cheese and a kicky chili flavor.

News in Brief: It Impossible To Tell What Sounds Will Freak Out Cat

DULUTH, MN—Saying that there seemed to be no clear pattern to the animal’s responses, local pet owner Wendy Vogl reported Friday that it is impossible to tell what sounds will cause her cat to totally freak out. “I can slam the front door and he’ll just sit there licking himself, but then he’ll hear thunder and run out of the room immediately,” said Vogl, adding that she could think of no rational explanation for why her cat, Max, would bolt the moment she switched on a hair dryer yet take the noise of a vacuum cleaner completely in stride. “If I had any clue at all what scared him, if there was any logic to it whatsoever, I could try not to do it as much. But I honestly think there’s just no rhyme or reason for why my cat will totally lose his shit …

Natalia Vodianova Sounds Off on Her New Fashion Campaign

theory natalia vodianova campaign

As the foremost Russian model, Natalia Vodianova has done it all: high glam at Louis Vuitton, gorgeous girl-next-door at Stella McCartney, ultra-femme for Calvin Klein Euphoria. Her latest campaign is for Theory, which is undergoing a fairly significant rebranding since Olivier Theyskenss departure in June 2014. First up was bringing back then promoting womenswear designer Lisa Kulson, who designed the label’s first pair of stretch trousers in the nineties. Then came a new brand image, which is where Vodianova factors in. “I wanted our people inside the company and people outside the company to look at Theory with a fresh mind,” Theory CEO Andrew Rosen said earlier this year. “I didn’t want to hold on inside the company to a lot of legacy things that I think were about a time and a place when business was different.” Fall is the model’s second season in front of the camera for the label, making her one of the driving forces establishing Theory’s new look. “It is true that I usually have long-lasting relationships [with brands], and this time it felt like it could be a perfect match,” Vodianova wrote over email.

Expand

Photo: Courtesy of Theory

Her reasoning might stem from the fact that the Theory lifestyle is very much in line with her own. A mother to four who keeps her international modeling career going strong, she’s the kind of effortlessly chic woman on-the-go Theory aims to appeal to. In the David Sims–lensed campaign, Vodianova sports the brand’s easygoing slacks, loose blazers, and several marled knits she calls “real keepers”—looks not too far off from her real-world uniform. Could Theory’s oversize gray turtleneck make the woman who wears it appear as elegantly unstudied as Vodianova? It’s available for preorder on the brand’s site; toss it on and see for yourself.

Zoo: Was “This Is What it Sounds Like” Music to Your Ears?

Zoo: Was "This Is What it Sounds Like" Music to Your Ears?Zoo S01E06: "This is What it Sounds Like" For a show about animals committing genocide via furevolution, you'd think Zoo would feature way more straight-up beastly attacks. Sure there were bears and rats, and STILL BATS but also a big focus tonight in "This is What it Sounds Like" for some reason was the rescue of Chloe and Mitch from a Brazilian drug dealer who WAS NOT AN ANIMAL AT ALL. Were you into it? What about Jackson and the gang's pursuit of the Wolfmaster? So I'm tinkering away reviewing the materials at hand and building something we can all be proud of in terms of recapping and photos and .GIFs and what have you, but please do me and Zoo Nation a solid and discuss tonight's episode here in the mean time. What Are the Sounds of Transphobic Dinosaurs Dying?

The world is changing. Some haven’t recognized this yet.

‘Conversion therapy’ advocates, ‘trans* exclusive radical feminists’… they are separate camps, both making loud, dissonant, antitransgender braying… alive still, but not comprehending that history is against them. Their shrieks are (hopefully) the final, desperate cries of nearly extinct creatures, vitriolic attacks on the transgender community thinly disguised as rational arguments.

But dying beasts are not harmless. The shrill, distracting hollers they make have received attention in the press. They have sometimes been invited to speak at conferences, legitimizing their bigotry. And many people, not knowing the context, give their work serious consideration.

‘Conversion’ or ‘reparative’ therapy has been much in the news: a technique designed to coerce people lesbian, gay, or bisexual into heterosexual lives, or transgender people into remaining their assigned birth genders. But there is little disagreement… conversion therapy has been opposed by most mental health licensing boards.

We even see global leaders taking stances. President Obama called for an end to reparative therapy while also appointing numerous trans* and gender nonconforming people to his administration, several US states have already prohibited it, federal legislation called “Leelah’s Law” to ban such inhumane treatment is making its way through the U.S. Congress (after trans* youth suicide victim Leelah Alcorn), and the Canadian province of Ontario just outlawed such practices as well. Again, there is no controversy.

Within the arguments by conversion’s proponents are two assumptions, rarely articulated openly: that trans* lives are undesirable, and that trans* lives are preventable.

The notion that inhibiting trans* lives is beneficial suggests that transgender or gender nonconforming individuals are somehow inferior, that living their identities in full puts an undue burden on them and everyone else, and that having trans* individuals in our culture is detrimental to society. My community finds all three distasteful.

Studies and anecdotal stories show that attempting to impose change upon someone’s gender identity, much like trying to compel a change in someone’s sexual orientation, is damaging and futile. While we do not know which of the children presenting with gender variance might persist with age, it is well documented that being told your identity is invalid leads to shame, low self esteem, poor performance at school, depression, and suicide. We’ve seen more than enough of that.

Allowing children the freedom to express themselves harms no one and is a familiar component of childhood development, and there is ample evidence to suggest that children, given space, will ‘find their level’. It is society that struggles with children’s nonconformity, not the children themselves. Again these arguments imply that there is a ‘correct’ way to be gendered, and that ‘trans-ness’ is an unacceptable deviation.

Ken Zucker is a psychologist in Toronto. His transgender program at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health has long been criticized for enforcing outdated protocols that severely restrict access to transition-related care. Recently Zucker has again been condemned for counseling parents of gender variant children to pressure those children into their external genders assigned at birth and to reject their internal identities. CAMH’s transgender youth program has been suspended pending an investigation. (Toronto resides within Ontario, the province to recently ban conversion therapy.)

In response to the ‘controversy’, J. Michael Bailey, author of the unscientific diatribe The Man Who Would Be Queen in which he referred to gender variant people as “evolutionary mistakes”, penned an Op-Ed in the LA Times defending Zucker’s philosophy. My colleagues (Diane Ehrensaft and Dan Karasic, and many others) have done a wonderful job at demonstrating how Zucker and Bailey’s writings are inaccurate, misleading, and paranoid.

Perpetuating this paranoia, Alice Dreger, in wired.com, suggested that some people would be better served by conversion therapy, and that providers, parents, and others might instead be mandated by legislation to change the gender of these children. This is a fundamental mischaracterization. No one is attempting to force anyone. It is about respect and autonomy.

Mammoth, sluggish creatures terrified of losing their dominance… unable, or unwilling, to keep pace with change.

Feminist writers like Elinor Burkett and Germaine Greer assert that individuals who have undergone great suffering to live fully as women are instead infiltrators from the patriarchy intent on sabotaging women’s solidarities. Actively refuting that “women are made, not born” they reject trans* women as inauthentic, and by extension the entire trans* and gender nonconforming community. Unsurprisingly, they often say little about trans* men.

More dinosaurs.

Taken together, the cries all hark back to attacks made in the 1970s and since in books like The Transsexual Empire by Janice Raymond, and to the arguments against the normalizing of same-sex desire throughout earlier decades. These people refer to the transgender community as a radical movement with the aim of dismantling social norms, and that those of us who do not adhere to binary expressions of gender as predetermined by our genes are living a masquerade. Or perhaps that we are pressuring people to adopt trans* identities not genuine to the individual. They also suggest that those who oppose transgender rights (like themselves) are victims of the extremist ‘transgender fringe’ (like me?) intent on attacking all contrary voices. But bigotry is still bigotry.

Maybe recent events will expose their prejudice, and critique from trans* activists, the mainstream media, and the culture at large will demonstrate how outdated and narrow-minded these ideas are.

Their day is over. There has been an explosion of gender possibilities causing seismic shifts before our eyes. We are witnessing the breakdown of gender norms, to the benefit of all humankind. Gender is a facet of our humanity to be explored in its full richness, and gender diversity is the future. Our community is tens of thousands strong… diverse… empowered… and (reasonably) happy. Younger people and younger providers are overwhelmingly trans* positive.

Ultimately the age of dinosaurs will pass; their fossils will be discovered by future anthropologist-archeologists to be scrutinized, dissected, and viewed as oddities whose ideas will seem curious for their naiveté.

Evolve, or be mired in the tar pits. History has already decided.

Artist Samples Sounds From Classic Disney Movies, Creates Club-Worthy Earworm

YouTube’s Pogo, a.k.a. Nick Bertke, is back with yet another Disney-inspired earworm.

The Australian electronic music artist sampled music and dialogue from classic Disney films like “Pocahontas,” “Cinderella” and “The Little Mermaid” to create a remix fit for a rave.

Pogo is known for using samples from classic movies and TV shows to create trippy dance tunes. Previously, he’s created remixes using snippets from The Muppets, Scooby-Doo, Harry Potter, “Mary Poppins” and even “Pulp Fiction.”

A Gay Dad Sounds Off On The School That Canceled ‘And Then Came Tango’ Play

By Rob Watson | The Next Family

There was a significant hearing this week on Tuesday about same sex relationships and whether to ban them. You likely missed this one because you were focused on that OTHER hearing in front of the Supreme Court, the one on whether all states in the union should perform and recognize same sex marriages.

No, this hearing was smaller, with less attention and could have been held in what might be described as a wholly alternative universe.

This hearing was in front of a school board in Catheys Valley, Mariposa County, California. It was held in a place where same sex marriage legally exists without question.

Unlike the Supreme Court, which was surrounded by folks waving banners of equality, tolerance and the love that creates families, this hearing was full of people who wanted none of that and took offense against anyone who did not look and act like them.

The case before the school board was this: the Sierra Charter Foothill School was scheduled to host a performance of the play, “And Then Came Tango,” based on the true story of two male penguins who hatched and orphaned egg and raised the chick as their own. New York Theater Now describes “Tango” as: “Emily Freeman’s timely play for young audiences, shares the tale of six chinstrap penguins at the Central Park Zoo — and the people who care for them. More specifically and touchingly, Freeman zeroes in on Roy and Silo, two males who form a penguin bond akin to their male-female-paired peers, engaging in mating rituals and trying to hatch a rock. Even more touchingly, Lily, the young Junior Keeper, convinces Walter, the zookeeper in charge of the exhibit, to let Silo and Roy incubate an orphaned egg — which they do to loving fruition.”

The booking of the play had been in place for a year with the Fresno State Theater Troupe. The school regretted having missed out on the previous year’s performance of “The Velveteen Rabbit,” so put in their reservation early to get on the schedule for “Tango.”

Once the play’s synopsis was sent to them, the administration wretched over what they perceived as a “gay theme.” They immediately made attendance voluntary and sent out “warnings” to all their parents. This effort was not enough for many in the community who demanded that the ability to opt out was not enough. They insisted that the school needed to cancel the production all together or they would boycott it for the day.

The force of the vitriolic response shocked the administrators who then threw the decision of the play’s fate to the school board. Meanwhile, some of the students who wanted to see the play began passing out rainbow ribbon bracelets out to those willing to wear them. This “radical” action was also quickly shut down by the administration. The school leaders took on a “road theater” of their own and went into classes to perform skits. Their theme was about how trying to inspire acceptance of others was actually a divisive act. I am not sure what the reviews of the “Divisive Act” skits were, but in any case, they successfully shut down the distribution of rainbow ribbon bracelets and the “perpetrators” apologized.

At the same time the first and second graders were putting the final touches to their creative writing and a story called “Hannah’s Adventure” which was headed to a writing festival in Meced. Hannah was undoubtedly “safe” because she apparently did not have two moms. So, full steam ahead.

Mariposa County life for “And Then Came Tango” was not so fortuitous. The school board voted conclusively to end its run long before it got started.

While the first and second graders of Sierra Charter Foothill wrote their piece, I wrote one of my own. Here is my open letter to the school and the community it serves.

Dear Sierra Charter Foothill School Community,

I was horrified to read of your recent actions around the play called “And Then Came Tango,” which depicted two penguins who loved each other and then saved, hatched and nurtured an orphaned egg. Your principal stated that the play “does cross the line for what parents think is appropriate for school.”

At the school board meeting, parents made comments like “It’s about two men. They raise a baby and I don’t agree with that.” Your community members described the family image in “Tango” as “social engineering” and “promoting” homosexuality. The consensus was “I want to teach my kids what I believe in my home that’s it.”

The family depicted in “And Then Came Tango” is mine.

We are not penguins, and my sons were not hatched, but aside from those set-decorating changes, it is us. My oldest son was born six weeks prematurely to a heroin-addicted mother. My younger son was found abandoned by his drug-addicted mother in a trailer where he had been uncared for two days. My spouse and I had so much love between us that we wanted to extend it further. We adopted these two babies who needed us.

The love I have for my sons is the most profound I have ever known.

That is our story, and it is reflected in the factual story of the penguins in the play. The penguin real life story occurred in 1999 at the Central Park Zoo, and they met with the same intolerant attitude that your community is exhibiting. Homophobic people rose up and demanded that the penguin family be broken apart. They felt what had happened naturally was somehow “sending the wrong message.”

The “Tango” story is about love. My family’s story is about love. We are people, we are not ideas or theories for you to “agree” or “disagree” with. My sons are not experiments nor are they part of some agenda to “promote” a brand of sexuality. I would never disrespect your children by characterizing them as “talking points of heterosexual sex acts” and I expect the common decency from you to not classify my sons similarly.

Just for the record, my family is not alone. There are thousands like us in the state of California. We are your neighbors. Just like the orphaned egg in the story, there are also thousands of kids who have been abused or neglected in our state. A Cambridge study found that there is only one parental profile family that chooses to create a family using foster care/adoption as its first choice — that profile is a two male led household.

My sons are both wonderful boys — bright, charming, caring — and have both been taught to be good citizens in their school community. Even though it is clear that they would not be welcome, your school would be fortunate to have two such as them within it.

All your kids are going to come to school and share with others about how they came to be in their families, LGBT kids do the same. My sons, like other kids from differing family structures, fully grasp the concept of mutual respect between families. It is the principle where we listen to each other and find common ground, not a focus on our differences.

It is a concept that you have just voted down. It is a lesson you have yet to learn.

As for “Tango,” theater arts are meant to illustrate, illuminate and shake their audience from pre-conceived notions and feelings. This play was brought to you not so you can judge and censor it, or the families like mine that it represents, but so you can watch and grow from finding out about us. It asks you to consider that a family is driven more from the hearts of its members than it is from their genitals.

Last year, your school was upset that it missed out on the road tour of a production of the classic “The Velveteen Rabbit.” I wonder if you would have caught the message of that play and how it too affirms the creation of families such as mine. I am sorry you did not see it, as you might have taken a glimpse of what it means to be a “real” family. You would have heard this:

“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real…It doesn’t happen all at once…You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”

Tango was not seeking your approval, it was a gift for you so that you could start to see things more broadly and appreciate the diversity in this world. It was ready to show you what is truly real, something like my family.

By your actions, you have shut down a great educational opportunity.

That opportunity was not for your kids, it was for you.

Mindy Kaling’s Brother Sounds Off on American ‘Black Privilege’

This just in, Mindy Kaling has a brother who is totally racist… maybe? Many stories like this have surfaced the past week. In them are varying accounts about Mindy Kaling’s estranged brother and how he “duped” admissions counselors across America by pretending to be black. Many are outraged by what is perceived as a racist attempt to infiltrate black culture but the results of Vijay Chokal-Ingam’s charade are quite astounding. While top colleges were rejecting his Indian classmates of higher academic stature, Chokal-Ingam found himself being considered a competitive applicant whilst touting a lower GPA and test scores.

While Vijay eventually decided that medical school was not the career for him, the experience of “black privilege” inspired him to write an memoir in which he will discuss themes of racism and discrimination in the Asian community. He believes programs such as affirmative action that have traditionally been hailed as restorative subsidies for disenfranchised Black, Latino, and Indigenous Americans have reversely affected the prosperity of Asian-Americans.

His antics have proven divisive, earning him a bevy of complaints from the black community and even a subtle disowning from his own sister. However, does he have a point?

Racial stereotyping has boosted Asians as being the “model minority” especially in academia. It is even supported statistically as 42 percent of Asian Americans have college degrees. While that percentage is the highest average among any other ethnic minority group it does not account for the disparity of academic achievement amongst the diaspora (Chinese and South Asians make up the bulk of the degree earning class while immigrants particularly from Mainland Southeast Asia are at an economic disadvantage).

When incorporated into the college admissions process that competitive applications for Asian students are higher than the projected averages given by the universities and while many universities pride themselves on considering the hardship and environmental factors of an applicant, it is abundantly apparent that Asian-Americans are admitted on a quota status.

None of these issues or statistics directly applies to Vijay Chokal-Ingam; he hailed from a wealthy background in Massachusetts. In fact, as an American of Indian heritage, he is more inclined to be favored by universities than others in the diaspora and even if affirmative action programs were adjusted to account for ethnic issues over race they would more than likely not favor him. However, in his demonstration he makes a valiant point about the discrimination of an underrepresented community. While many may consider his actions and memoir as a more modern form of “blackface,” it should not be forgotten that it was not long ago that black students chose to identify as white in order to receive equal opportunities in education. While the jury may be out on Chokal-Ingam’s moral fervor as an activist, just because an act is racial, does not make it racist.

Debi Mazar Sounds Off On Her Lesbian ‘Younger’ Role, ‘Dumb’ Dolce & Gabbana Remark

Debi Mazar said she feels “a responsibility to the gay community” in playing a lesbian character on TVLand’s “Younger.”

The series, which also stars Sutton Foster and Hilary Duff, focuses on a 40-year-old single mom (Foster) who undergoes a makeover to appear 26 in an effort to land a publishing job after her husband leaves her.

On the show, which debuts on TVLand March 31, Mazar plays Maggie, a woman who just “happens to like chicks instead of guys.”

“I don’t like to play caricatures of people,” she said in a HuffPost Live interview this week. “I’m a New Yorker, so I’ve been surrounded by the life — the gay life — my whole life, from the community.”

The “Entourage” and “GoodFellas” star, 50, also sounded off on the media firestorm surrounding Dolce & Gabbana’s remarks about “synthetic children” who are born to same-sex families.

Noting that she believed that “things get lost in translation,” she said, “I just think it was a dumb comment, misconstrued in a way, and the Internet just [took] off with it.”
