Patrick Grant Dedicates Pop-up Space to Designer Peers

GROUP EFFORT: British designer Patrick Grant is lending a hand to emerging London talents with a pop-up shop called Basement at his E. Tautz flagship on Duke Street.
He tapped Topman’s creative director Gordon Richardson to curate the offer, which includes selections of labels including Lou Dalton, Mathew Miller, Alex Mullins and Louise Gray, who has done clothing and artwork for the space.
Grant said he wanted to set aside a dedicated space for his fellow designer friends who don’t have bricks-and-mortar stores of their own and added that he’s happy to welcome other brands.
“All the designers in here, I know personally very well. As designers we’ve all grown up together. We’ve shown together, we’ve done showrooms together. We have all grown up through the BFC’s [British Fashion Council’s] pipeline of New Gen. We’ve taken the last train home from Paris — we have all got drunk together. We are all really good-pals, so it made sense that we might sell together. And its great to have the support of Gordon, who has been mentor and friend to all of us.”
Prices range from 20 pounds for a Community Clothing T-shirt to 1,000 pounds for a Matthew Miller leather jacket. Both Gray and

12-Mile High Space Tower

You probably saw the news on Top Tech Blog about the proposed space tower to launch spaceships from its roof.

You will not be surprised to hear that skeptics believe it can never be stable against the elements. And its own weight would crush it.

So…what kind of tall shape would be more stable than a skinny tower? How about a mostly-empty pyramid (more like a skeleton of a pyramid) with a solid tube core for wind energy production (from the updraft)?

See my old blog post on pyramid-shaped space towers here. I didn’t think about launching anything from the top. I’ll add that 🙂

Deradoorian’s Ethereal Space Jams Will Rock Your World

angel deradoorian

The singer and multi-instrumentalist Angel Deradoorian is giving me an astrological reading over the phone. “Scorpios are very present,” she tells me. “They’re seen as people who live right here, right now, for the truth, for cutting through the bullshit. They’re really deep, passionate. I’ve noticed you’re very aware. You’re like, ‘I don’t want to take up too much of your time.’ That’s water sign awareness.” She pauses, and adds. “Though I have to know the other parts of your chart to really do the full analysis.”

Deradoorian is a Cancer, which means that she’s emotionally attuned, introverted, and in touch with her inner child. (It was in childhood, for the record, that she became interested in astrology: “I was into personality traits. It made me feel unique. Like, these are my powers. Other people have other powers.”) She’s also imaginative and a daydreamer, qualities that are woven into the fabric of this Friday’s The Expanding Flower Planet, her beautiful, textured, otherworldly debut full-length solo album, the followup to her 2009 EP Mind Raft.

Of course the Sacramento-born, former Brooklynite (she’s now based in L.A., but only in that she’s currently storing her record collection at the place of her close friend, Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij) hasn’t exactly spent the interim six years chilling. She’s contributed vocals to the likes of U2, Charli XCX, and beat producer Flying Lotus. She’s collaborated with Vampire Weekend, Björk, and the Roots. She’s also one-third of Avey Tare’s (you know him from Animal Collective) band Slasher Flicks.

But if Deradoorian’s name sounds familiar, it’s probably because until 2012 she was a vocalist and bassist for the celebrated Brooklyn avant-indie band the Dirty Projectors (and if her face looks familiar, you may recognize it from the cover of the group’s beloved 2009 album, Bitte Orca). Mind Raft came out one month before Bitte Orca, and was lost in the wave of Dirty Projectors hysteria. But after three years of round-the-world touring, playing and singing in that ensemble, Deradoorian again felt the tug of her own material. She left the band in 2012, before the follow-up album, Swing Lo Magellan, was released, and spent the next three years deep-diving into her own songs.

Astrology is an appropriate reintroduction to Deradoorian because an amalgam of vaguely spiritual references and beliefs undergird her new record. She derived the name The Expanding Flower Planet from a tapestry that hung in her studio, an embroidered Chinese flower mandala. The trippy album art comes courtesy of an under-the-radar Baltimore musician-artist named Daniel Higgs, whom Deradoorian describes as “a mythological character” and “like a unicorn to some people.” She nervously asked if he’d lend a painting to the project, and what he sent was “so insane, so awesome, so powerful. It’s a complete transformation within the image, which mirrors what I was going for conceptually.”

In Deradoorian’s own life, that transformation has been from high-flying, hard-touring rock star to isolated, insulated songwriter. “It was hard in ways I did not expect,” she tells me. “I knew it was going to be intense facing myself, that this was going to be a pretty lonely process, but something that I wanted. When you’re part of a group, you have each other to rely on. This was like, Wow, I’m going to be pretty invisible for awhile.”

She sings on every track of this album and plays almost all the instruments. She talks about the process of writing and recording in terms of healing herself and broadening her mind (one literal example of the latter, noted by critics, is that she’s incorporated many Eastern and Middle Eastern sounds). When I ask her if there’s a spiritual framework that she subscribes to, she tells me she was raised “lightly Christian” by two artists (her father is Armenian, explaining the surname) who “put that strictness behind them.” Her own beliefs are more New Age than New Testament. “Spirituality is pushing outside into the unknown, trying to float in space alone, and not feel totally afraid. It’s trying to embrace worlds you can’t see. And bring comfort to yourself and to others.”

The songs that emerge from that philosophy are driving, droning, almost mantra-like, sometimes building to a frenzy above which Deradoorian’s flexible, ethereal voice can soar and dip. It’s easy to see how beat-heavy, chant-y earworms like “A Beautiful Woman”—for which she made an amazing live video with her older sister and collaborator, Arlene Deradoorian—could take her right back under the spotlight. Last winter she opened for Zola Jesus, and this fall she’ll start out touring with former Stereolab singer Laetitia Sadier. In the meantime, she and Arlene, who sings on the album and who will be playing drums on tour, are hanging out in the Virginia countryside, figuring out their stage vibe (“you’re dressing the part, presentation is performance”), and gearing up for whatever comes next.

“Oh, my God!” Deradoorian singsongs in the middle of describing the pains of starting over. “There’s a bunny in front of me! So cute! Nature is running wild right now. Yeah! So what was I saying?”

Spoken like a true Cancer.

The press release for this album describes it as music intended to heal. Can you elaborate?
I don’t want that to come off in a pretentious way. It’s more healing for myself. But it was also wanting to share those feelings with other people. And feeling like part of what I want for my music is to offer those feelings of healing to the listener.

Were there particular wounds you were nursing, or was it more generally the notion that we all need to be our own therapists?
I think it was both for sure. You know, existential-crises-of-your-twenties kind of things. Having to completely readjust after leaving a band. Rediscovering who you are. Letting go of old patterns, habits, traumas. It was a very therapeutic process. But it’s also like withdrawal. There were painful parts of the process, but then after, something really positive would come of it.

How soon after you left Dirty Projectors did you start writing this? Why’d it take so long to come out after the 2009 EP?
I left in 2012. I started writing in 2011. There was a little bit of overlap, but not a lot. I was pretty engulfed in Dirty Projectors. I wasn’t, like, racking my brain over it. Maybe because I didn’t think I could until I made some conscious decisions to move forward in that direction.

How have your influences changed since 2009?
I learned about so much other music from my peers all through my twenties. It was a huge opening up of all these genres. Mind Raft was a little more scattered. Those were songs I started in my late teens. This was a much more concentrated effort, and I had a lot more musical knowledge or research under my belt. My tastes changed.

Any specific examples?
I started listening to Alice Coltrane. She’s the one that never gets old. And then I started listening to more Middle Eastern music, more synthesizer records. A lot of stuff from the seventies. I really like analog and modular synth sounds. There’s all these recordings of the planets I found on the NASA website. I was listening to Saturn. It sounds like a synthesizer! Those sounds are everywhere. I was like, Is this even real?

So you’ll be going on tour with your sister. Are you guys close?
It’ll be the two of us, like the live video for “A Beautiful Woman.” I think for this year we’ll do it this way, and then maybe get a band next year. We’re very close. She’s two years older than me. We shared the same room for a really long time. We’re quite different, but it’s a very rewarding relationship. It’s never stagnant. We kind of complete each other. She’s more extroverted and I’m more introverted.

How’d you guys start working together?
In 2011 my brother [a drummer] and sister and I formed up a band to play some shows in Europe. I went out with Zola Jesus on tour in January of this year. I thought initially I might just do it solo, but I was like, I don’t really want to drive around the United States alone in the winter—maybe my sister can sing with me and just drive? She said yes. I was like, Maybe you can play drums, too? Now she’s playing drums. She’s good, she’s got the rhythm.

Who drives?
We split the driving. I have a turbo diesel station wagon. It gets really good mileage. It’s really just her and me and a bunch of shit in the back. It’s great. It’s very crucial to the development of the live performance. Getting to spend time with her is really important.

Do you argue about what to listen to when you’re driving?
Maybe sometimes. But we’re pretty good about it. We got really into Disclosure on the last tour. We got so pumped listening to that and coming into the city. Yeah! Time to load in!

Did you play music together as kids?
We’ve always sung songs together, just around the house, which made my dad very happy. He’s a musician, so he was like, “You’re singing together! You’re wonderful singers! I love it!”

Was your dad responsible for your musical education?
Both he and my mom. My dad’s very specifically into R&B, jazz, soul, blues. That was the base for us kids. They offered us lessons at a very young age. “Pick an instrument.” My dad would be playing saxophone in the house every day. My mom told me I thought every family had a dad who played saxophone. We were always surrounded by music. It was just part of life.

You left school early to pursue music, right?
I left high school when I was fifteen. I was in between wanting to do visual arts, fashion design, and music. I got into a fashion design program in San Francisco, but I couldn’t afford to go, so then it was between art and music, and I wanted to be in bands, so it ended up being music. I played in bands for about four years before joining Dirty Projectors at 20.

Did you learn anything about songwriting from the Dirty Projectors’ Dave Longstreth?
There’s a lot. I saw that there’s endless ways to structure music and form a song. And all the dynamics and the little things that are important, the nuances in music, the changes that are important to creating its own color and life. Dave’s really good at arranging music, incorporating dynamics. I don’t think I’m as complex musically, but I have definitely learned a lot from his style. I didn’t really sing much until Dirty Projectors. That’s when I really became more of a singer, focused on that as another instrument to learn.

Why’d you leave the band?
I’ve always wanted to pursue solo music. I realized in retrospect that a lot of what I was doing was learning how to tour, how to work with people, how to write. There came a point between the cycle from Bitte Orca to Swing Lo Magellan that seemed like, Time to move on. Dave and I had some conversations and concluded that it would be a good time to start doing my own stuff. Otherwise I would have waited a couple more years at least.

It must have been a huge change for you to go from a big ensemble to being on your own.
It was. But I knew it was going to be. I told myself, these things you experience, these successes, don’t expect them to always be there. Maybe that’s because I always felt like I needed to spearhead my own project. It was awesome to work with these amazing people, but that’s more Dave’s doing. I was just associated with those things.

Now that you’re fronting your own band, going on these tours where it’s all about you, do you think differently about your stage presence, about what you wear?
Yeah, definitely. I think about all that stuff. My sister and I are like, What’s the wardrobe going to be for this tour? We’re working on a pretty limited budget. We have to be smart about what we choose. It’s actually very helpful when you do decide because it puts you in performance mode. It’s a shift out of daily work clothes into: Now we’re going into the show, this is what we’re concentrating on.

We’re looking at all these runway shows, trying to incorporate some of those ideas into what we’re doing. Alexander Wang, Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Henrik Vibskov. I like that stuff a lot. I like texture, structure in clothing. How it’s designed to fall on your body. It’s not always about being flashy. I like print images. Anything that looks artistic. The Henrik Vibskov stuff is cool because it’s all old-school  Pop Art–looking. Alexander Wang’s jackets are fucking awesome. They look like Rothko paintings. Really beautiful.

The Trampery Looking for New Fashion Incubator Space

LONDON — The Trampery, a social enterprise that operates work spaces for the tech, travel, art and fashion sectors across East London, is appealing to find a new space for its fashion incubator, currently located in the London Fields neighborhood.
The location has been operating for the past two years, and designers James Long, Holly Fulton, Jonathan Saunders and Lou Dalton are all based in the building.
But in light of a 400 percent increase in rent on the building, beginning in September, the organization is looking for a new location, or multiple locations, for the fashion businesses it supports. The Trampery is now appealing on two fronts — to find a new permanent home for its fashion incubator in a 10,000- to 30,000-square-foot space, and to find pop-up studios for the emerging designers, possibly in partnership with fashion brands or retailers.
Charles Armstrong, founder and director of The Trampery, noted that fashion labels “have the lowest budgets to pay for facilities,” compared to technology and other creative sectors. “Unless somebody comes forward with suitable buildings, there is a big question mark about whether we can continue to provide suitable facilities for labels here in London,” Armstrong said.

Fendi Hosts Roman Themed Pop-up Space at Harrods

ROMAN HOLIDAY: Fendi will open a pop-up space at Harrods on Thursday as a part of its Traces of Palazzo Della Civiltà Italiana concept. It is inspired by the brand’s new headquarters in the beaming white Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, a Thirties architectural gem in the city’s EUR neighborhood. Andrea Mancuso and Emilia Serra, of Analogia Project design studio, have created a space replicating the repeating archways of Fendi’s headquarters but on a smaller scale.
The pop-up, which runs until Aug. 30, will feature interactive elements and allow shoppers to design a 3Baguette bag, with entries judged by Silvia Venturini Fendi. The winner will receive a one-off 3Baguette, specially created by Venturini Fendi for Harrods.

News in Brief: Man Sadly Realizes Cramped One-Bedroom Apartment Has Enough Space To Host Party With All His Friends

CHICAGO—Sighing as he scanned the room and performed a mental tally of everyone he would invite, local 26-year-old Andrew Bryer sadly realized that his cramped one-bedroom apartment has enough space to host a party with all of his friends, sources confirmed Friday. “There’s really nowhere to sit other than the futon and a couple of stools, but honestly that’s probably plenty of seating for my college friends and my friends from work,” said Bryer, adding that his narrow galley kitchen would provide “plenty” of additional square footage should he also invite a few neighbors from his apartment building or if some of his hometown friends were visiting. “I guess if all of them brought their friends it might get a bit crowded, but the little entryway area would still provide enough overflow room for everyone. Or I could just push the coffee table against the wall. Jeez …

A pair of astronauts heads to Jupiter to investigate a radio signal sent from a mysterious monolith on the moon, but their tranquil trip is endangered when their on-board computer begins acting oddly. The simple plot of director Stanley Kubrick's inspired space adventure (co-scripted with noted science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke) belies the profound philosophical implications of this classic film, which inspires viewers to ask questions about the nature of advanced civilizations . . . and of human consciousness. Nearly half a century after its release, the film's groundbreaking special effects are still breathtaking, and its ending still mind-bending.

Miles from Tomorrowland is getting Disney Junior viewers excited about the science that powers space flight

So how does Sascha Paladino — the creator and exec producer of Disney Junior’s Miles from Tomorrowland — measure the amount of time & energy that he’s poured into the development of this popular new animated series? Oddly enough, Sascha doesn’t use miles as his unit of measure. But — rather — the ages of his twin boys.

“Back when I first pitched Miles to Disney Channel executives, my sons were only three months old,” Paladino recalled during a recent phone interview. “By the time that our very first episode debuted on Disney Junior last month, my sons had just turned five. So this show’s journey from original concept to finished product took — what? — 4 & 3/4rds years? Wow.”

2015-03-20-1426838657-7586816-Miles3.jpg

And why exactly did it take so long for Miles from Tomorrowland to move through Disney’s development pipeline? Because Sascha was looking to do something genuinely ambitious with this animated series. Which was find ways to get pre-schoolers excited about the science & technology that makes space flight possible.

“When I and the Miles development team were still in the research phase for this Disney Junior show, we got to visit NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena. We also got to tour that privately funded space company, SpaceX. And you know what we learned as we talked with the rocket scientists who worked at these places? That they were all inspired to pursue the jobs that they have today because of the movies & the TV shows that they had watched when they were kids. Programs like Star Trek and films like Star Wars, ” Paladino continued. “That’s when we realized how important Miles could actually be in the long run. Which is when we became determined to make this Disney Junior show as entertaining & informative as it could possibly be when it came to explaining the science that powers space flight.”

Mind you, given that the target demographic for Disney Junior is kids 2 – 5, putting together a new animated series that would then try and explain key scientific concepts & principles to pre-schoolers in an entertaining way initially seemed … Well, impossible. But Sascha and his team persevered.

2015-03-20-1426838699-257302-Paladin1.jpg

“I won’t lie to you. There were days during the development process where working on Miles felt like we were juggling flaming knives. I mean, our goals for this show were multi-fold. We were trying — above all — to be entertaining. But at the same time, we wanted to introduce kids to aspects of the sciences in a non-didactic way. And if that wasn’t already a tough enough nut to crack, we also wanted Miles to be very much be in the grand tradition of Disney storytelling. Which meant that this new Disney Junior show had to have great characters with lots of humor & heart,” Paladino explained.

As I noted at the top of this article, it took a number of years to get the balance of elements just right. But in the end, Sascha & Co. came up with the Callisto clan. This family of space travelers — Mother / Captain Phoebe, Father / Engineer Leo, 7 year-old Miles and his big sister Loretta — who all work for the Tomorrowland Transit Authority, this galactic transportation corporation which is determined to connect the universe through science & technology.

“And what’s great about this set-up is that — because each episode of Miles from Tomorrowland is then made up of two 11 minute-long stories — as Miles and his family explore strange new worlds, we then get to take our young viewers on an adventure which features at least one space flight-based or science fact per episode. Take — for example — our ‘Journey to the Frozen Planet’ episode — where we talked about exoplanets. Which are these planets that exist outside of the solar system,” Paladino stated.

2015-03-20-1426838738-2643848-Paladin2.jpg

“Journey to the Frozen Planet” is actually an excellent example of what a truly difficult juggling act Miles from Tomorrowland can sometimes be. Especially since this particular episode tries to get across the importance of two distinctly different scientific principles within the confines of a single 11 minute-long story.

“What we were looking to do with ‘Journey’ was demonstrate to our viewers that while — when it comes to science — it’s usually crucial to follow instructions exactly, it’s also equally important to sometimes think outside the box,” Sascha said. “Now you’d think — given that this animated series is being put together by artistic types like animators, designers & writers — that this episode would then come down on the ‘Think-outside-of-the-box’ side of the fence. But that’s where you’d be wrong. Because when it comes to science, you really do need to follow the rules or you’re probably not going to get the outcome that you were looking for. So the real challenge with ‘Journey’ was to give equal weight to both sides of this argument.”

Given that some of the subject matter that Miles was going to deal with did sound awfully dry, Paladino knew that he needed a top notch cast of voice actors to put this material across. Which is why one of the very first people Sascha hired for this Disney Junior show was Tom Kenny of SpongeBob Squarepants fame.

2015-03-20-1426838782-1891441-Paladin4.jpg

“But given that — when we produce TV shows here at Disney — we want to make sure that these programs are not only entertaining for kids but also have something for Mom & Dad … Well, we thought that it might be fun to include some performers from the Star Trek & Star Wars universes to help round out our vocal cast,” Sascha enthused. “Which is why we reached out to people like Mark Hamill, George Takei and Wil Wheaton. We even got Bill Nye the Science Guy to come voice a character on this show.”

“And what I really love about being able to do that is since it was these performers that helped inspire the current generation of scientists who are now pursuing goals like space tourism and the first hotel in space. Which — if what the folks at SpaceX told us proves to be true — that’s in our immediate future. We’re just four years or so away from that long-held dream becoming a reality,” Paladino continued. “And if we’ve done our job correctly with Miles … Well, who knows what the future generation of scientists — who hopefully will be inspired by our show — will then be able to accomplish?”

And speaking of accomplishments … Given that Miles from Tomorrowland — when it debuted on Disney Junior back on February 6th — reached 2 million unique viewers and 697,000 children ages 2 to 5, eventually becoming that week’s No. 3 cable TV series among kids ages 2 through 8, it’s clear that Sascha & Co. created something that really resonated with this show’s target audience. More to the point, Disney Stores across the country are reporting that they’re having trouble keeping up with consumer demand for Miles from Tomorrowland-related merchandise. Which suggests that the Mouse may now have a new sci-fi hit on its hands.

2015-03-20-1426838830-9819932-Paladin5.jpg

So if you’d like to check out the program that’s getting pre-schoolers all excited about the science that powers space flight, the Disney Channel is staging a Miles from Tomorrowland programming event this morning. Where — starting at 9 a.m. ET / PT — they’ll be airing three full episodes of this new animated series back-to-back.

Journey to Space Official Trailer 1 (2015) – Documentary HD

Journey to Space is a celebration of space exploration, a tribute to international cooperation in space research and a vision toward our near-term future beyond Earth’s orbit – a manned mission to Mars within a generation. The film beautifully and inspiringly chronicles the space shuttle program, MIR, the ISS and the Hubble telescope – paying tribute to these accolades in the context of our future in space. Dazzling computer imagery depicts the spacecraft, habitats, landers, and vehicles necessary to achieve interplanetary travel, touchdown and colonization. Journey to Space taps into our unquenchable drive to explore and discover what lies beyond, a vision certain to inspire today’s young explorers and dreamers. This is the time for our species, in the words of Carl Sagan, to “set sail across the cosmic ocean.” Next stop… Mars!

Thalassa Space Grows Up with Craft Beer, Live Music

Thalassa Space Grows Up with Craft Beer, Live MusicThe former pool hall will become a full bar, restaurant and live music venue by the end of the year. Berkeley's nightlife scene continues to evolve (and possibly mature), with the reconfiguration of the former Thalassa space as a music venue and craft beer garden. As a result, the 12,000 square-foot space, will transform from a pool hall into a full bar and full-service restaurant, with a large stage for live music and an outdoor beer garden with separate entrances for the restaurant and music venue. Berkeleyside reports that Alex Popov of Liquid Entertainment (the company in charge of the live venue) wants to create a "flexible space" for bands, DJs and special events, similar to setup at The Chapel in San Francisco.
