How Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes speech set awards Trump template

As award shows go, the Golden Globes usually isn’t much of a trailblazer. In hindsight, though, the 2017 edition of the event — and Meryl Streep’s appearance in particular — set the prickly tone for the relationship between President Trump and the entertainment industry, and the template for award telecasts that followed.

Speech Flirt

During a conference, I was pleasantly surprised to be seated next to a very handsome man. We flirted casually through dinner, then grew restless as
the dignitaries gave speeches.

During one particularly long-winded lecture, my new friend drew a # sign on a cocktail napkin. Excited, I wrote down my phone number.

Looking startled for a moment, he flipped the napkin over and drew another # sign, this time adding an X to the upper-left-hand corner.

Kendrick Lamar Tells Fans How Fame Changed People During 6-Minute Speech [VIDEO]

If these walls could talk, they would say Kendrick Lamar is the sh*t and he’s putting it down for the purest form of Hip-Hop music.

During his latest pit stop in New York City for the Kunta’s Groove Sessions Tour, K. Dot decided to take a break from his virtuoso style of emceeing and give fans the skinny how

“Within six months of good kid, m.A.A.d city dropping, the life of what I knew or knew what I was or think I knew, that shit changed within six months,” the Grammy Award-winning rap star told the packed house of Webster Hall. “And you’re going through the vultures of the world telling you you’re great and you’re trying to make yourself believe that, but it’s hard because you’re institutionalized from where you come from.”

Released in October of 2012, Kendrick’s studio debut album went on to become a certified classic and the entry point he needed to be mentioned amongst music’s elite. His follow-up To Pimp a Butterfly has been subjected to extreme critiques on both sides of the spectrum, but the conversation has managed to keep the album alive when traditional means of promotion have since faded.

“I think this sh*t could live forever,” he continued. “I’m looking at y’alls faces. I got some of the most loyal, dedicated fans in the world and New York is one of them. Don’t mind me I could talk all day. To Pimp A Butterfly. God allowed this motherf*cking album to soar all the way to the top, with no motherf*cking commercial success. God allowed this to be top-tier without a radio single and sh*t.”

“I got some of the most loyal, dedicated fans in the world,” K. Dot said, thanking the audience for their support.

‘Birdman’ Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu Addresses Immigration Reform, Donald Trump In Speech

As Donald Trump gave “Saturday Night Live” viewers a satirical sneak peak at what life in the United States would be like if he became president, Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu spoke candidly about what life is actually like for Mexicans living in Mexico and the U.S. today.

Iñárritu delivered his speech Saturday at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where he was being honored alongside artist James Turrell as part of the museum’s Art+Film Gala.

Below is a partial transcript of the “Birdman” director’s speech, which was originally published in English and in Spanish on Medium.com.

As a Mexican, I consider the honor I am receiving tonight a recognition to the whole Mexican community for their eminent hard work and vibrant cultural contributions made for years and years to the city of Los Angeles and the United States.

I have been extremely fortunate to shoot films around the world; sharing human experiences with different kinds of people, regardless of where we are from.

We are the only creatures on planet Earth that want to see ourselves in the mirror. Because we know we are the same, but we are different, we need to share. We need to see ourselves projected in other members of our species to, in turn, understand ourselves. Cinema, is that mirror. It is a bridge between the others and us.

Unfortunately, there are currently people proposing we build walls, instead of bridges. I must confess that I debated with myself, if I should bring up this uncomfortable subject tonight. But in light of the constant and relentless xenophobic comments that have been expressed recently against my Mexican fellows, it is inevitable.

These comments would be unacceptable if they were targeted against another minority, nevertheless, these millions of people do not have a voice or any rights  — even though they have lived here all of their lives.

These sentiments have been widely spread by the media without shame, embraced and cheered by leaders and communities around the U.S. The foundation of all this is so outrageous that it can easily be minimized as an “SNL” sketch, a mere entertainment, a joke.

But the words that have been expressed are not a joke. Words have real power; and similar words in the past have both created and triggered enormous suffering for millions of humans beings, especially throughout the last century.

Visit Medium.com to read Iñárritu’s speech in its entirety.

News in Brief: Report: Increase In Gun Sales To Be Most Concrete Result Of Obama’s Pro-Gun-Control Speech

WASHINGTON—Researchers at the Urban Institute published a study Friday confirming that a sharp increase in gun sales nationwide would be the most concrete result of the impassioned pro-gun-control speech that President Obama delivered following yesterday’s mass shooting in Oregon. “According to our analysis, by far the most tangible impact of the president emotionally urging the nation to consider how their votes can prevent mass shootings like this will be a 17 percent spike in revenue for firearm vendors across the U.S.,” said report co-author Kyle Bieler, who found a direct link between the estimated $ 58 million uptick in gun sales over the next month and Obama’s use of the phrases “common-sense legislation,” “only advanced country,” and “not enough.” “The portion of the president’s remarks in which he asked for support from state legislatures and governors will, based on our projections, nearly double the number of …

Kristen Stewart Doesn’t Owe You a ‘Coming Out’ Speech

BY RACHEL KRAMER BUSSEL

Kristen Stewart has issued a bold response to those intent on confirming exactly what sexual label to pin on her. In the latest issue of Nylon, in which the actress appears on the cover, she tells anyone interested in her sexuality: “Google me, I’m not hiding.” She added:

If you feel like you really want to define yourself, and you have the ability to articulate those parameters and that in itself defines you, then do it. But I am an actress, man. I live in the fucking ambiguity of this life and I love it. I don’t feel like it would be true for me to be like, ‘I’m coming out!’ No, I do a job. Until I decide that I’m starting a foundation or that I have some perspective or opinion that other people should be receiving… I don’t. I’m just a kid making movies.

It’s a fitting statement from Kristen Stewart, not only because she’s called fame “the worst thing in the world,” but also because she’s saying, essentially, that the focus on her personal life detracts from discussion of her work — or anything else about her. It’s a reminder that Stewart doesn’t owe the Internet an official “coming out” — and to presume she does is insulting and insensitive.

MORE FROM THE DAILY DOT

Already, her sexuality has become part of the cultural conversation about Stewart — this article being no exception, I admit. Whereas Nylon simply went with “Riding Shotgun with Kristen Stewart” for a headline, countless reports about the interview have honed in on her comments about her sexuality, making it the focal point. Some, such as “Kristen Stewart plays coy over sexuality rumors,” made it seem as if she didn’t go far enough in her statement.

This is natural, I suppose, in a world where, as the Advocate explains, before a celebrity like Stewart has officially “come out, “media outlets create “a glossary of queer innuendo that is meant to signal to a reader that a person is gay or in a same-sex relationship, without actually stating it outright.” Their hilarious list of these ways of saying-it-without-saying-it — which includes “tomboy,” “gal pal,” and “sapphic circle” — highlight the absurdity of our need to make Stewart answer the question “What are you?” not for her satisfaction, but for ours.

By phrasing her comments as she did, Stewart turns the question back on the asker, pointedly making us collectively wonder, “Why do we care so much about who she’s sleeping with? What does it change about how we perceive her whether she’s dating a man or a woman?” Those questions, whether we’re talking about a famous movie star or the rest of us, are much harder to answer than a simple word can ever summarize.

In an interview with Beatrice in 1997, writer Jill Nagle said, “Sex is what academics would call oversignified. You can play tennis with a friend without worrying about ‘what it means,’ but you can’t do that with sex.” That quote has stayed with me, because even though in the intervening years, we’ve made a lot of progress in terms of being more knowledgeable and accepting of a variety of sexual orientations, sex acts, and genders, we still want a simple way of framing a topic that’s actually more complex, in many cases, than one word can summarize.

We still get so fixated on who people are screwing we practically salivate over every juicy detail — witness the media frenzy when an interview with Cate Blanchett was edited in a way that implied she’d had sexual relationships with women, followed by her clarification that she hadn’t, actually. Stewart does not want to be a poster child, and her comments, appearing two months after her mother was quoted in the UK’s Sunday Mirror confirming Stewart’s relationship with assistant Alicia Cargile, are a way of making it clear that she takes such fascination with her sexuality as intrusive.

Stewart is also making a larger point about the changing role of labels like gay, lesbian, and bisexual — namely, that for many people, they are beside the point. She went on to tell Nylon, “I think in three or four years, there are going to be a whole lot more people who don’t think it’s necessary to figure out if you’re gay or straight. It’s like, just do your thing.”

We’ve seen numerous similar sentiments in recent pop culture, from people who are proud, unashamed, and not hiding their same-sex attractions and relationships, but don’t want to be defined by them, from Miley Cyrus‘ pronouncements about being gender- and sexually fluid and Raven-Symone’s rejection of the label “gay” (“I want to be labeled a human who loves humans”) to Maria Bello’s embrace of the term “whatever” to describe her sexual orientation and Ilana on Broad City‘s declaration that “I have sex with people different from me.”

In their way, those rejecting sexual labels are offering up a very optimistic point of view, one that presumes that whatever your sexual orientation, you are entitled to explore it and define it for yourself, regardless of what anyone else thinks. This is, of course, true — though it’s vital to note that we haven’t yet reached the point where living either in the ambiguity Stewart praises or as an out gay, lesbian, or bisexual person means you’re free from discrimination.

Stewart’s right to find the questioning off-putting (if you don’t agree, ask yourself if you’d want your every date, kiss or act of holding hands, let alone what you do in bed, obsessively scrutinized). As Sarah Seltzer pointed out at Flavorwire, just as asking celebrities whether they’re feminists has led to an increasingly pointless PR spin cycle, so too does questioning them about their sexuality often come across futile and passé. Seltzer argues it’s in celebs’ best interest to remain as publicly ambiguous about their sexuality as possible, lest they be pigeonholed.

To some extent, I agree, but in Stewart’s case, specifically, her words don’t sound ambiguous. They sound like the opinions of someone who simply feels there are more important things in her public life than her personal relationships.

That’s not to say having out queer celebrities as role models isn’t important; rather, that those who want to take on that responsibility should be able to do so voluntarily, or else it’s pointless — a debate exemplified in the responses to Roxane Gay saying on Twitter that Stewart’s sexuality is not a big deal. Stewart clearly does not want her sex life to precede her acting in the public eye. She doesn’t want her sexuality to oversignified, or even, it seems, brought up at all.

The latter is unlikely to happen, but we can grant Stewart — and by extension, everyone else — the right to define or not define their sex lives as they see fit.

Arrested Development’s Lead Singer Speech Shares Deep Thoughts On “Straight Outta Compton”

“I applaud Ice Cube, Gary F Gray & Dr. Dre because they know how to tell a great story! The accurate portrayal of a Hip Hop producer’s heart…. wanting to make something special…well done. The vicious sharks that swim in music industry waters…greatly exposed. The acting, promotion and soundtrack… superb! In a country where excellence in black film on the big screen isn’t seen enough, it’s proudly exhibited here.

But from the perspective of the ancestors, they got some explaining to do. Centuries of struggle by our men, women and children who were thoroughly desolate with only one hope. The hope that through their perseverance, future generations would have it better than they did. Many died for that very reason.
That’s the African-American legacy.

It was just two weeks ago, we all were discussing how soiled America still is from the horrors of slavery and the following systematic racism.

Blacks for hundreds of years purposely portrayed in every advertisement, news article, play, TV show and movie as dangerous, vile, uncaring, simple, roguish brutes, with intelligence a tad higher than a monkey. Year after year, decade after decade, century after century… And here we are today – as white trigger happy cops shoot blacks. It doesn’t matter if they’re unarmed, cuz in the minds of so many, blacks are always armed with centuries of dangerous propaganda. And a lie can run around the world twice before truth can get her shoes on!

And in comes Hollywood pushing yet ANOTHER movie with that same ole narrative… “Straight Outta Compton!” With the convenient subtitle – “The worlds most dangerous group.”

Is that literal or it’s figurative? None of them came from the most dangerous of street life but Easy E. right? I often hear that they’re dangerous because of Cube’s defiant lyrics & fierce determination to speak “truth” to power. Ummm, that sounds honorable.

But I’m sure I can come up with a few more suggestions more appropriate than NWA. The Black Panthers for instance might be better suited for such an honor. With fierce determination they defied an entire system at risk of their very lives! They REALLY fought for justice and most paid the ultimate price. An epic bio pic that shows how these brave young men and women organized change for all races and genders, showing true devotion mixed with legal prowess… that’s a film suggestion! And can I get a witness that NWA’s “F** the Police” is only the prevailing anti-police brutality anthem BECAUSE the music industry championed it. It didn’t take the FBI long at all to see that NWA was ultimately a harmless group because their other songs & political savvy was thoroughly misguided and non-directional. As opposed to the earlier & less popular “F** the Pigs” that the Black Panthers often shouted as they persevered through police harassment as actual freedom fighters, not as drug dealers and pretend thugs. Historically there were activists that started as thugs but TRANSFORMED into purposeful revolutionaries.

I’ve heard some say, the title “most dangerous” is as far as MUSICAL groups are concerned…. Ummm wouldn’t PUBLIC ENEMY better fit that definition? But see a movie like that would simply be too dangerous, it might cause people to do more than ooo and aaah over the financial success of a music producer & rapper who made nice movies and headphones. It might cause REAL change.

NWA may be the most dangerous, but not because they fought against a racist and oppressive system… but because they were effective ambassadors of that very system! I like to call it white supremacy on wax! Who else could have done such a great job at spreading the age old message that blacks are morally sub-human? Many things white supremacists say about blacks is what NWA confirms in their most popular songs. And yes, in 2015 Twitter is going nuts praising the film and much of the hiphop world is bowing down to NWA as heroes in the genre. But I applaud a good number of blacks that “don’t believe the hype”!

Bio pics about rap artists are few and far between, but take notice to WHICH rap movies Hollywood green lights for major motion picture release? And have you ever thought about WHY these particular movies?

Biggie’s Notorious, Eminem’s 8 Mile, 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Trying and NWA’s Straight Outta Compton! Most of which come straight outta Jimmy Iovine’s & Dre’s storehouse of thuggery, and celebrate the “American Dream” thru gritty accounts of drug deals, crack addicted communities, strip clubs, friends that deceive each other and gun battles gone wrong. And then the inevitable transformation from rags to riches. As they live happily ever after (in their death though). Oh yeah, Biggie was about right, that if you’re black…you’re nobody til somebody kills you!

To quote Public Enemy… “Burn Hollywood Burn!” They’re pretty much about money and judging by this past weekends ticket sales… THEY’RE WINNING! Stay tuned for a Tupac, Ice T and whomever else da cap fits bio pic for us all to swoon over!

Feed us our illusions, Hollywood has no skin in the game, it’s just money to them. But don’t we as blacks literally have skin in the game?

It’s our SKIN that signals brainwashed cops to pull us over just because we didn’t use a turn signal. Or blow our brains out for trying to start our car while being questioned. Or get choked to death, spines snapped, or just walking home wearing a hoodie.

BUT SOMEBODY BLACK KEEPS PROUDLY DELIVERING THESE MOVIES TO HOLLYWOOD.

There’s gotta be a point where we WEIGH the pains we feel from years of being mis-represented against the joy we feel seeing another black thug soliloquy on the big screen! The pain lasts for years, the joy last 2 and a half hours. You do the math.

There’s gotta be a breaking point when we make a critical decision. Directionless expression or real freedom? I know, I know… no one screams when Scorsese does a gangster film, why pick on rappers? Because Jewish people aren’t making these movies WHILE simultaneously getting shot down in the streets by their own kind, arrested in astronomical rates and their rappers literally getting assassinated like they were in a Middle East war zone!

When is enough… ENOUGH!?

Consciousness didn’t start with NWA, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly”, nor ‪#‎blacklivesmatter‬.

It’s been in full effect since slavery and we must keep our eyes on the prize to reach the finish line!
On the big screen, these rappers are portrayed as bigger than life heroes and even somehow “freedom fighters”! But TRUE heroes like Julian Bond, Garvey, Harriet & Parks deserve a bio pic, because they served US all! But would we support it?

It NEVER was enough to have a conscious song or two on an otherwise “white supremacist” gangsta record. It’s not enough to have things “go in cycles”… (people say that to me all the time about music)
It’s about standing on the shoulders of those that stood before us until we get out from the ditch that hides our humanity!

Our values are so backwards that fathers, mothers, educators, intellectuals & activists don’t fill today’s memes and murals. Instead it’s Tupac, Biggie, NWA and maybe a Jay-Z. The murals you see painted in the ghettos, (I’ve even seen em in the outskirts of Africa!) Memes of these rappers floating around on the Internet and interviews at the end of albums with their “prophetic” words. 3D holograms of them in front of wooing crowds. Supposed martyrs packaged and shrink wrapped in a CD. “Heroes” of the people – celebrated, applauded, jailed and assassinated, with a level of admiration that you’d think they died because of political resistance or activism, but no. It’s simply a petty beef or a record executive hungry for more money.

We have so lost our way, that we celebrate their temporary success – in lieu of our own lasting success.

Behind the riches of every Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Easy E. or Suge Knight are quiet little Jewish & White guys in polo shirts that are even richer than them.

They play golf and listen to Bach while they count their money. Meanwhile we wallow in these decadent, century old stereotypical, blaxploitation flicks and albums, their kids fly in private jets and vacation in Belize. Our kids suffer just walking to school.

Yes, Straight Outta Compton is very good and yes, these men have immense talent, but Italian mafioso refused to sell crack to their own communities. They insisted on separating their families from their illegal business.

We sell this “crack music” to our little kids and we infest the whole world with it!
It is NOT just entertainment. We are getting killed in real life. We influence Africa, South America and everywhere there’s poor people that need inspiration. It has never been simple entertainment and it has far out reached the block…. it’s racist propaganda. And it hurts the soul of humanity!

And by the way ITS NOT HONEST, it’s not what we see in the hood. It’s an embellishment of it, it’s “reality” on steroids, it’s someones story on performance enhancers! And the things that destroy these communities has become a Satanic virus, packaged and shipped out to every other community to infect those that were previously healthy.

That’s my problem with NWA – not the music (it’s brilliant) NWA endorsed the worse traits of the hood, promoted these traits and to justify their lust for fame they revised their purpose claiming it’s a noble freedom of speech movement.

And many have bought that revisionist history, poured it in our glasses & ummm that kool aid taste sweet! White supremacy is happy, blacks got our thug heroes and the world keeps on turning.
So, sit and eat your popcorn, sip a Coke, enjoy a well-deserved break from lifes stress.
I know I did. I also know I made Ice Cube, Dr. Dre Gary Gray and a host of white dudes a bit richer! I’m alright with that. May God bless em.

But even as I’m entertained by the film, I know that unless we change our dynamics and moral infrastructure as black people, WE really are the entertainment. The silly blacks that can’t realize the difference between an Arnold Schwarzenegger fiction and a propaganda missile aimed at the very demise of our freedom, dignity and culture.

GIL scott was right….The revolution will not be televised it will be screened in a theater near you.
Two thumbs up.”

News in Brief: Relieved Scott Walker Narrowly Avoids Acknowledging Immigrants’ Humanity During Campaign Speech

SUNAPEE, NH—Taking a deep breath and slowly regaining his composure as he reflected on the disaster he had narrowly averted, Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker appeared visibly relieved after managing to stop himself just short of acknowledging immigrants’ humanity while speaking at a campaign event Friday, sources confirmed. “Oh, man, I almost referred to them as ‘people’—I’ve got to be more careful next time,” said Walker, who was able to successfully redirect his line of thought toward ending birthright citizenship after catching himself on the verge of expressing genuine sympathy for the struggles faced by illegal immigrants in the U.S. “I was this close to saying I understood the difficult choices they have to make and recognizing that many of them come here hoping for a better life—hell, I nearly identified with them as parents! Thankfully, I stopped just in time and went straight into …

“Today” Cuts Off Janelle Monae’s Police Brutality Speech

Janelle Monae rocked NBC’s “Today” Friday morning in New York, but when the singer started to talk about police brutality, she was abruptly cut off.

Monae appeared to promote a new Wondaland Records album, “The Eephus” and performed the anti-police brutality song “Hell You Talmbout.”

At the song’ end, Monàe told the crowd:

“Yes Lord! God bless America! God bless all the lost lives to police brutality. We want white America to know that we stand tall today. We want black America to know we stand tall today. We will not be silenced…”

And, then he was silenced. The “Today” reporters started to talk over the Atlanta-based singer. Check it out below.

News in Brief: Obama Practices Defiant Speech To Aliens Late At Night Behind Oval Office Desk

WASHINGTON—Testing out different phrases and vocal inflections as he has done almost every night for the past seven years, President Barack Obama sat at his desk in the early morning hours Friday rehearsing a defiant speech he’d give to aliens should they one day invade, Oval Office sources confirmed. “We are a proud, resilient species, and we will never surrender to you,” Obama reportedly said aloud emphatically, before pausing to jot down several potential rewordings in his legal pad as well as a double-underlined reminder to himself to “pound fist at end for effect.” “‘This is Earth; it is our home. We will defend our planet, whatever the costs may be. Your technology may be more advanced than ours, but if you come here seeking to harm our kind, we will know your morals are not as developed as our own.’ Yeah, that’s pretty good. Let me …

Kris Jenner Calls Caitlyn Jenner’s ESPYs Speech ‘Amazing And Very Brave’

Kris Jenner wasn’t at the ESPY Awards on Wednesday when Caitlyn Jenner accepted the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, but she only had nice things to say about her ex’s speech.

“I think it was amazing and very brave,” Kris told Us Weekly on Thursday at the Amazon Summer Soiree in Los Angeles. “I think she looked beautiful.”

The 65-year-old former Olympian gave an emotional and inspiring speech in front some of country’s top professional athletes and her entire family.

“Trans people deserve something vital. They deserve your respect,” she said. “And from that respect comes a more compassionate community, a more empathetic society and a better world for all of us.”

The former athlete first came out as transgender in an interview with Diane Sawyer in April and formally introduced herself as Caitlyn to the world this past June with a 22-page Vanity Fair cover story.

After learning that her ex was planning to transition, Kris admitted that she felt as though she had to “mourn” the person she was married to for more than two decades. Since then, the reality star has been publicly supportive of Caitlyn and her journey.

In June, the 59-year-old finally opened up about her ex’s Vanity Fair cover telling Extra, “I think it’s amazing. I think that someone following their dream is truly inspirational to a lot of people … you have to do what makes you happy.”

She went on to add that the cover is “beautiful.”

Caitlyn Jenner’s ESPY Awards Speech Was Pitch-Perfect

caitlyn jenner

History was made last night when Caitlyn Jenner took to the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles to accept the ESPYs Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Not only was it her first official public appearance since starting her transition, but Jenner delivered a powerful, pitch-perfect ten-minute speech in which she addressed skeptics and encouraged her fellow athletes to use their platform for good. “If there’s one thing I do know about my life, it is the power of the spotlight,” Jenner said. “Sometimes it gets overwhelming. But with attention comes responsibility. As a group, as athletes, how you conduct your lives, what you say, what you do, is absorbed and observed by millions of people, especially young people.”

Jenner said her responsibility was clear: To continue telling her story as honestly and openly as possible and, from there, do whatever possible to “reshape the landscape of how trans issues are viewed.” The question of responsibility is one many have been raising since Jenner appeared in a special with Diane Sawyer and on the cover of Vanity Fair, among them Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox, who wrote an open letter explaining that exposure must be used to highlight unseen issues in the trans community. “Most trans folks don’t have the privileges Caitlyn and I now have,” Cox wrote. “It is those trans folks we must continue to lift up, get them access to healthcare, jobs, housing, safe streets, safe schools, and homes for our young people. We must lift up the stories of those most at risk, statistically trans people of color who are poor and working class.”

In her speech, Jenner also thanked Cox, as well as the many activists who had come before her.

Before closing, Jenner took the opportunity to address some of the criticism that has been lobbed her way, confronting skeptics and the notion that her exposure is wholly self-serving. “If you want to call me names, make jokes, doubt my intentions, go ahead, because the reality is: I can take it . . . So for the people out there wondering what this is all about, whether it’s about courage or controversy or publicity, well, I’ll tell you what it’s all about: It’s about what happens from here.”

Amy Schumer’s Totally Real, Rad And NSFW Glamour Awards Acceptance Speech

British writer Caitlin Moran may have put it best: Amy Schumer “tore the fucking roof off” Tuesday with a hilarious NSFW acceptance speech at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards.

Accepting the award for Trailblazer of the Year at the London event, Schumer was at once bawdy, empowering and wonderfully unpretentious.

“I’m like 160 pounds right now, and I can catch a dick whenever I want, and that’s the truth,” she said at the start of her speech to wild applause.

Schumer joked about how female comedians are typically treated poorly in photo shoots, and slammed some women’s magazines for making you feel “bad for just being born with a pussy.” She also gave a shout-out to actress Goldie Hawn, who was at the event, for being “beautiful and vulnerable and fucking hilarious.”

Several celebrities praised the 34-year-old comedian for her laugh-out-loud acceptance speech. Kerry Washington, who clinched the International TV Actress award at Tuesday’s event, said it “gave me life.”

‘Have Your Own Standards’: Stephen Colbert Offers Spot-On Life Advice In Wake Forest Commencement Speech

“I hope you find the courage to decide for yourself what is right and what is wrong, and then please, expect as much of the world around you. Try to make the world good according to your standards.”

Those were some of the words of wisdom uttered by comedian Stephen Colbert during his commencement address to the graduates of North Carolina’s Wake Forest University on Monday.

In his address, Colbert, who left the “The Colbert Report” last year and will take over the “Late Show” later this year, spoke to the graduates about change and the unknown — both things, he noted, he’s intimately familiar with.

“I just spent many years learning to do one thing really well. I got so comfortable with that place, that role, those responsibilities, that it came to define how I saw myself; but now part of my life is over,” he said. “It’s time to say goodbye to the person we’ve become … and to make some crucial decisions in becoming who we’re going to be. For me, I’ll have to figure out how to do an hour-long show every night. And you at some point will have to sleep. I am told the Adderall wears off eventually.”

In a world full of uncertainty and people who want to tear you down, Colbert stressed the importance of developing your own set of values and beliefs.

“People my age will sometimes say to you, ‘Hey, that work you did, that thing you said, that cause you championed — it’s not good,’” he said. “Having your own standards will help you weather moments like that … [and will allow] you to perceive success where others may see failure.”

Of course, it wasn’t all serious talk for the late night host. Colbert joked about the hot weather, poked fun at the history of the college and some of the school’s traditions, and even joked about #TheDress.

“Congratulations to you, the class of 2015,” Colbert said in the introduction of his speech. “You did it and you look amazing. Although it’s a little embarrassing you all showed up in the same outfit. Really, even all of the accessories are the same. Everyone has a black and gold tassel — or is it blue and white? Grandparents, just know this was the issue that divided a generation. You had the Vietnam War, your grandchildren had an ambiguously colored Tumblr post.”

According to the Winston-Salem Journal, Wake Forest University awarded degrees to 1,861 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. Before his commencement speech, Colbert was presented with an honorary doctorate of humane letters.

Ed Helms Destroys Rolling Stone’s Rape Story Scandal During UVA Valedictory Speech

“Never let others define you, define yourselves.”

So began a seemingly comedic speech at the University of Virginia’s Valedictory Exercises by actor Ed Helms on Friday. In front of a large audience, the comedian peppered in jokes about Netflix and student loans before turning a harsh eye on the Rolling Stone rape story scandal, which has drawn widespread condemnation and lawsuits against the magazine.

“It has been said that a rolling stone gathers no moss,” Helms said. “I would add that sometimes a rolling stone also gathers no verifiable facts or even the tiniest morsels of journalistic integrity.”

“Rolling Stone tried to define you this year,” Helms said. “As a result, not only was this community thrown deep into turmoil, but the incredibly important struggle to address sexual violence on campuses nationwide was suddenly more confusing than ever and needlessly set back.”

The speech comes a month after Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism called Sabrina Rubin Erdely’s story “A Rape on Campus” a “journalistic failure” — a move that prompted Rolling Stone to retract the entire piece.

“The failure encompassed reporting, editing, editorial supervision and fact-checking,” the authors of the review said.

During his speech, Helms also delved into the strikingly negative news coverage of the Baltimore riots, chastising many major networks for their portrayal of the protestors as “thugs,” noting “Rolling Stone’s rush to define is just the tip of the iceberg.”

“The reductive labels aren’t helping and we better stop applying them, because there are a lot of Americans in a lot of pain,” Helms said. “We try to define others with simple labels because it makes the world easier to understand.”

“This community didn’t fall for the fallacy that just because Rolling Stone was wrong everything here must be perfectly peachy,” he continued. “You all had the courage to understand you can be outraged at Rolling Stone and still ask yourselves hard questions: When sexual violence does occur in our community, do we have the best possible protocols and resources available to our students? And UVA is charging forward to answer those questions and you should be proud of that.”

Watch The Best Man ‘Speech’ That Brought These Brothers To Tears

This is what brotherly love looks like — playful teasing on the surface and deep, genuine affection underneath.

On March 29, singer-songwriter Daniel Buccheri of Melbourne, Australia surprised his older brother Adrian with a wonderful best man “speech” at his wedding.

“I didn’t want to write a conventional speech,” Buccheri told The Huffington Post. “I do a lot of writing with my own music, so it only seemed fitting to do what I do best.”

Buccheri wrote personalized lyrics to the tune of well-known songs like Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me,” The Police’s “Every Breath You Take,” R. Kelly’s “Ignition,” Elton John’s “Can You Feel The Love Tonight, Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister” and the Backstreet Boys’ “As Long As You Love Me,” alternating between moments of gentle mockery and heartfelt sincerity.

brothers wedding pic
Daniel and Adrian at the wedding

After making jokes about his brother’s snoring (among other things) in the first half of the performance, Buccheri used the last part of the song to “get a little bit serious.”

“Sometimes I think we don’t express how we really feel about our loved ones, but I really felt like I needed to say those heartfelt things to my brother,” Buccheri told HuffPost.

The lyrics he’s referring to? “I’m so proud of you, and all you’ve done for me. Whether you realize or not, I’ve always looked up to you.”

“There were few words spoken after the speech, as we were all pretty emotional,” Buccheri said. “Just a lot of hugging and crying.”

Emma Watson Says Women’s Potential Is ‘Astonishingly Untapped’ In HeForShe Davos Speech

Emma Watson followed up her September 2013 HeForShe address with another equally impassioned speech — this time at the World Economic Forum.

On Jan. 23, the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador took the stage in Davos, Switzerland to speak about the HeForShe campaign, the influence it has had on her own life and the new initiative Impact 10x10x10. “Women share this planet 50/50 and they are underrepresented — their potential astonishingly untapped,” she told the crowd.

The HeForShe campaign encourages men to join the movement towards achieving gender equality. As the campaign’s website reads, it “brings together one half of humanity in support of the other half of humanity, for the benefit of all.”

In her speech, Watson describes the far-reaching impact the launch of the HeForSpeech campaign had. Her remarks from the September conference were watched over 11 million times, created 1.2 billion social media conversations and encouraged men from almost every country in the world to sign the HeForShe commitment.

Watch Watson’s full speech at Davos here (story continues below video):

The campaign has inspired many celebrities including Desmond Tutu, Hillary Clinton, Prince Harry and many more.

“It is my belief that there is a greater understanding than ever that women need to be equal participants in our homes, in our societies, in our governments and in our workplaces,” she said. “And they know that the world is being held back in every way because they are not.”

Instead of engaging people on an individual level, like HeForShe’s original campaign, Impact10x10x10 is taking on bigger groups. The initiative is a one-year project that will engage businesses, universities and governments, and encourage them to make real commitments in order to achieve gender equality.

Watson addressed different groups of people throughout her speech, including CEOs of big businesses: “CEOs: Have you implemented the women’s empowerment principles in your own company? What change have you seen? Are you someone persuading men to become HeForShes and collecting their signatures for our website? How many have you got?” she asked. “We want to know. We want to hear from you.”

“I’ve been stunned by the amount of men in my life that have contacted me since my speech to tell me to keep going,” she said. “And that they want to make sure their daughters will still be alive to see a world where women have parity, economically and politically.”

Bill Maher Argues For Privacy, Free Speech In Wake Of Donald Sterling Scandal

While most late night comedy shows have focused on Donald Sterling’s overt racism in recent weeks, Bill Maher dug into a different aspect of the story on Friday’s “Real Time:” Privacy.

“Last week when President Obama was asked about the Sterling episode, he said, ‘When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, just let them talk.’ But Sterling didn’t advertise,” Maher explained, “He was bugged. And while he may not be worth defending, the 4th Amendment is.”

It’s a difficult point to make, given the collective outrage that sprung up once Sterling’s comments were broadcast. Maher’s studio audience broke into fewer rounds of applause during the segment than is usual for one of his New Rules. But as the host laid out his argument that we need to maintain the ability to speak our minds in private, he seemed to win them over.

In response to a Washington Post op-ed by Kathleen Parker which suggested you, “Say what you will, but you’d best check for recording devices… [or] check your thoughts,” Maher chafed, “I’d rather be a Mormon.”

He went on to sum up Parker’s sentiment: “So let me get this straight, we should concede that there’s no such thing anymore as a private conversation, so therefore remember to ‘lawyer’ everything you say before you say it, and hey, speaking your mind was overrated anyway, so you won’t miss it. Well, I’ll miss it, I’ll miss it a lot.”

Watch the segment above (the Sterling New Rule begins at 2:14) and let us know what you think.
