‘Making a Murderer’ picks up trail under glare of the spotlight

The frenzy stirred by “Making a Murderer” adds an extra dimension to its 10-episode follow-up, to the extent the original docu-series and the fallout from it becomes a significant part of the story. The result is an equally dense, engrossing look into the next phase for Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey, the two men convicted — under questionable circumstances — in the murder of Teresa Halbach.

The Not So Swinging Thirties to Take the Spotlight in New London Show

SOBERING UP: The Turbulent Thirties and its fashion — ranging from the influence of Hollywood films to the rise of suburbia — will be the focus of a new show called “Night and Day: 1930s Fashion & Photographs” at The Fashion and Textile Museum. The exhibition will open Friday and run until Jan. 20.
Split into different tableaux, the exhibition highlights the changing political and cultural landscape of the decade, and its impact on fashion. There will be a total of 100 looks on display, lent by Mark and Cleo Butterfield of C20 Vintage.
“Whilst carrying out the research and planning Night and Day, it became clear that escapism was a major theme that needed to be explored. While the decade is famous for its glamorous bias-cut evening gowns that showcased a woman’s curves and its magical musicals full of romance and glamour, these years were defined by a constant anxiety about the harsh economic reality and shifting social status,” said co-curator Teresa Collenette.

“Night & Day: 1930s Fashion and Photographs,” at the Fashion and Textile Museum, London, until Jan. 20.

‘The Post’ delivers, putting journalism in the spotlight

“The Post” was made for this moment, in more ways than one. Not only does Steven Spielberg’s crisp retelling of the Pentagon Papers story call attention to journalism’s highest calling, but Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham’s heroic stand — having been thrust into that position — is a stirring portrait of courage during feminism’s pre-Roe v. Wade era.

Tanya Morgan Returns To Spotlight With New Studio LP YGWY$4

Tanya Morgan has been one of independent Hip-Hop’s most consistent acts, with the duo of Von Pea and Donwill staying busy separately and as part of the Lessondary crew for well over a decade now. The group has unleashed its latest studio album YGWY$ 4, its first full-length release in over four years.

We saw a bit of TM last year as they were heavily featured on the Lessondary’s Ahead of Schedule album, and the Abandoned Theme Park EP with Lessondary member Che Grand flexing his production muscles. With YGWY$ 4, the group’s fourth full-length since professionally releasing music since 2005, Tanya Morgan believes this album captures the best of what they have to offer musically at this juncture of their career.

The album isn’t overloaded with features, but former crew member and still-close ally Illyas makes an appearance, as does Atlanta-based MC and producer, Jermiside. New York-based vocalist and longtime affiliate Cyren Young also shows up for a pair of songs.

The visual roll out began earlier this month with the thumping “Dirty Stayout” track featuring Afaliah. TM released a video for “Trunk Sh*t” this past Friday. Check out both visuals below.

YGWY$ 4 is available at most online retailers, all of which can be found by following this link.

Wool Gets the Spotlight at Paris Museum

PARIS – A flock of sheep invaded the Palais de Tokyo in Paris this weekend as part of a global awareness campaign orchestrated by The Woolmark Company.
The three-day event, ending Sunday, includes artwork made of wool, a photo exhibit about the natural fibre, and a series of dance performances showing off wool’s versatile nature.
Brands, including Adidas, which developed running apparel based on wool, and Dormeuil, supplier of fine wool fabrics to bespoke tailors including Cifonelli, Camps de Luca and Brioni, set up stands to let visitors get physical.
WWD caught up with Peter Ackroyd, global strategy advisor for The Woolmark Company, at the event.
WWD: What is so special about wool?
Peter Ackroyd: Its diversity. It can be made into suits, blankets or sportswear, and we think we don’t even know all the end-uses of wool. But it’s not only a very diverse fibre — at the end of its life it goes back to earth and enriches the soil. It doesn’t end up as landfill. We put a wool sweater next to an acrylic sweater in Prince of Wales’ garden. In five months, the wool sweater has almost entirely gone back to nature, the acrylic one — you just shook it and put it

News in Brief: Extension Cord On Stage Steals Spotlight From Jeb Bush During Campaign Rally

CONCORD, NH—Emphasizing the allure and appeal of the 30-foot length of electrical power cable that shared the stage with the former Florida governor, sources confirmed that an orange three-pronged extension cord completely stole the spotlight from Jeb Bush during a New Hampshire campaign rally Friday. “Jeb made some interesting points about the need to prioritize national security, but ultimately he was just completely overshadowed by the far more riveting extension cord running along the floor beside him,” said political pundit Chris Wallace, who acknowledged that attendees appeared more energized by the flexible orange cable taped to the stage and noted that the one-time GOP frontrunner repeatedly failed to connect with the audience as effectively as the cord. “Unfortunately for Jeb, no matter what he did throughout the night, he just looked bland and flat compared to that extension cord. He’s not going to want to bring that piece …

Breeding Ground Spotlight: Gee Major

Gee Major, a rising Hip-Hop artist from the Carolinas & DMV, was born with Cerebral Palsy. Born with a disability but, ran with focus and drive, he has yet to let his handicap slow him down, in fact he may be one of the most spoke about up and coming emcee’s to hit the music scene. Faced with many obstacles from drugs to discrimination, to the loss of his mother in 2001, Gee Major has remained loyal to his craft as an emcee and holding his own.

Hip-Hop heads aren’t the only one paying close attention to Gee Major, so is Nike. In fact Nike is making athletes with disabilities a priority, by designing a shoe for people with Cerebral Palsy thanks to 16 year old Matthew Walzer who helped create the ‘Nike Flyease’.

In the video, below, Gee Major explains how he discovered the new technology and thanks Nike and Matthew for their efforts.

After completing his interview today, I had a profound new respect for Gee Major who remains humble, focused and determined to make his mark in the music Industry and Hip Hop culture as a whole. Hip Hop fans are sure to embrace Gee Major’s talent and story behind his music.

AllHipHop.com: Your latest project Handicapable Hosted By DJ Holiday drops August 18th. What inspired your mixtape title?

Gee Major: The mixtape title was inspired by my condition, I was born with Cerebral Palsy and I just used life experiences and perseverance to create this opportunity to be able to record this mixtape.

AllHipHop.com: With your condition, Cerebral Palsy, I know your open about it, how do your fans react to your condition?

Gee Major: They think its cool, its like going to the circus, you know like back in the day when they used to say the circus was a freak of nature, you’ve never seen it before, its brand new and people just think its cool that I can take something that was given to me, thats considered bad, but I turned it into something good, you know something positive.

AllHipHop.com: You released “Erbody Wanna Be Tony Montana” featuring Fat Trel from MMG, how did the two of you link up?

Gee Major: We linked up after I reached out to him, once the song was recorded, he’s a local here in the DMV area. We also have mutual friends so we linked up, got in the studio and recorded it.

AllHipHop.com: How does your new project and your overall brand… set you apart from other rising artists that are out now?

Gee Major: The way it sets me apart, Imma 80’s babies/90’s kid, so like you know I take life experiences and put a little bit of the new style into the old music and bring story telling back in a sense, and along with the handicap the disability I’m not afraid to go out on a limb and say I have these problems and expose myself instead of pretending to be so hardcore all the time, I keep it real.
AllHipHop.com: Is it true you credit King Los as being one the first individuals to help put your hip-hop talents on display?

Gee Major: I met Los back in 2009 at University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES), where I was attending to attain a degree in english. One of my friends produced for him, and he brought Los down to the school and he linked me in with him and we recorded this video of a secret hip-hop cypher that we did on campus, we put in up on youtube and it went viral. You can look up UMES freestyle and it will come up. He just opened the door for me. When people started to see me on that type show and seeing me on those circuits people started to recognize me for my talent.

AllHipHop.com: Until the next time, what would you like to share with your supporters?

Gee Major: First of all I want to thank Allhiphop.com, I used to get in trouble for going on the allhiphop.com site in school all the time, so when you guys reached out…thats something I’ve been waiting on. I’m a fan of the site, anything that ya’ll need me to do, I’ll do it, I support ya’ll 100% and appreciate ya’ll supporting me. I support anyone with disabilities and anyone trying to better themselves and get out of the hood, I support them, reach out to me and I promise I will get back to ya when I have time.

Carolinas & DMV champ Gee Major gears up for the release of his upcoming Dj Holiday hosted mixtape ‘Handicapable’ to be released August 18th with his newest single entitled “EWTBM”(Erbody wanna be Tony Montana) ft. Fat Trel.

Kim Kardashian West Steals the Spotlight in Custom Proenza Schouler

Kim Kardashian West

Well it was hard to top the Peter Dundas for Roberto Cavalli dress of this year’s Met Gala, but Kim Kardashian West managed to stun in a custom looks from Proenza Schouler at the CFDA Fashion Awards tonight. It’s the first red carpet moment since yesterday’s big announcement, and the sheer, grommet-studded fabric hinted at her new baby bump as she presented Instagram’s cofounder Kevin Systrom with the Media Award.

The feathered trim at the shoulders acted as a fashion-forward take on epaulettes, while the high neckline provided a nice counterpoint to the insinuations of skin that came through the dress. With Mrs. West sure to make many more high-profile appearances in the months ahead, this dress was a glowing step in the right direction of her expectant mother–style.

Women in Business Spotlight: Kathryn Johann Brings Mermaids to Life

“It’s been a passion of mine to help women feel as good as possible so they can enjoy their time at the beach.” – Kathryn Johann

Buying a bathing suit is scary. Even the most confident, empowered, ball-busting corporate executive will admit it, if only to herself. It’s scary. Because unlike lingerie, which only you and possibly a significant other will ever intimately know, or a power suit that intimidates and defines, wearing a swimsuit in public is the equivalent of letting your intimacy hang out there for all the world to see in all its vulnerable glory, and to hold your head up and fake the confidence you may not necessarily feel while you try to relax at the pool or on the beach. And though, yeah, intellectually you know nobody’s really watching you or judging you or your body by what you wear, psychologically it feels like you’re frozen in a huge spotlight, especially if the bathing suit on your body is just wrong, wrong, wrong, and you’re uncomfortable in addition to being self-conscious. At least this is how it is for me.

And apparently, it’s exactly what happened to Kathryn Johann too. As an un-waifish, normal, average-sized beautiful woman, she was constantly searching for a bathing suit she just felt comfortable in, as well as attractive, and especially sexy. A bathing suit with high quality “stronger, thicker fabric” that, as she puts it, “does miracles with sucking in any flaws.” A bathing suit that had proven elusive so many times, she decided to solve this problem for herself, and she hoped for other women who were facing similar obstacles, by creating the Morada Blue swimwear line.

Islamorada, Florida, where her family keeps their vacation home, was the inspiration for the Morada Blue swimwear name, and like so many small businesses dreamed up from scratch, it started really small. Beginning with trunk shows at friends houses, and through word-of-mouth, it quickly grew into runway shows and bikini parties, eventually making its debut in swim shops in Michigan, California and Florida. It also flourishes as an online apparel store as well at moradablue.com. She plans to open her own full-scale beachwear shop within a few years.

Drawing from her formal education in art and design at Lafayette College and her studies abroad in Florence, Italy, Kathryn focuses on classic styles and slim lines with flattering accents ranging from contemporary shapes to fluttery romance for just the right touch of flair and individuality. She takes this further by selling all her suits as separates and adding cups and underwire for extra support and comfort. Her latest brainchild for this upcoming swimsuit season is her Swim Like a Mermaid campaign, where she will be doing underwater photo shoots with models that embody the spirit and joy of mermaids of the sea.

Building on the momentum the last year has brought to her business, Kathryn tells us, “I will be hosting model search events in Florida, doing runway shows and photo shoots and will be participating in a Maxim Magazine event in Miami during Swim Week [in July].” As an independent, empowered and driven woman she admits she “knew that eventually I wanted to be my own boss and start a company that I would be proud of.” Working hard and enjoying what she does with gratitude for the opportunites she’s had along the way, she doesn’t worry about or “feel stress of the competition,” seeing the work as its own reward and hoping to make even a small contribution to helping women “feel and look as good as possible.”

Brandon Stanton, the photographer behind the immensely popular Humans of New York site, has a special talent for getting strangers to open up to him. And while he usually prefers to shoot and interview ordinary people he encounters on the streets of the city — so far, he’s photographed more than 5,000 New Yorkers — last night, he focused his lens on one of the most extraordinary events in Manhattan: the Met Gala. Unsurprisingly, while there was no shortage of star power at the ball, Stanton’s interest remained in those whose faces and names you don’t know off the top of your head.

Artist Spotlight With Music Producer And Performer MartyParty

2015-05-03-1430633876-7686116-MartyParty3.png

Veteran producer Martin Folb, more famously known as MartyParty, has been traversing sonic landscapes on an endless quest to create what he calls “purple music.” Hailing from South Africa but finding a home in Miami, Florida, MartyParty has lived multiple lives, all of them working together in perfect symbiosis. I had the opportunity to ask Folb a few questions on the birth of trap music, being a software engineer in the Silicon Valley, the politics of South Africa, lifestyle choices, his upcoming album, and even his favorite color and animal (which happen to be red and squirrels).

Still visiting South Africa every so often, his relationship with the country is lifelong as you cannot change where you come from. Folb discussed how South Africa went through a social revolution in the 1980s and on February 2, 1992, voters democratically elected for political reversal. He poignantly explained:

“The ridiculously violent times had finally found balance after a decade of racial, economic and social imbalance. Along with the release of Nelson Mandela, South Africa became a free standing Republic. It has since completely rewritten its constitution. When I left in 1994, South Africa was well on the road to recovery.

It is now a Democracy whereby every citizen is encouraged to vote. At present, South Africans are dealing with an influx of immigrants from other African nations. The change in South Africa and its people could teach the rest of the world a lesson in anti-discrimination. Ironically, I am now an American citizen. However, even though it is 2015, I notice similar themes develop and manifest elsewhere in the world. It feels like déjà vu.”

After graduating with a Computer Science degree in South Africa, he was quickly recruited to Silicon Valley and began working with a start up company as a software engineer. He immigrated to San Francisco in 1994 with a brain that was primped and primed for the booming technological era. The tumultuous world of Silicon Valley eventually wore on Folbs’ mind, body, and soul. In 2005, he parted ways with his life as a software engineer, thankful for the knowledge he had gained but ready to begin a new chapter.

In need of some soul cleansing, he left his old life to delve into the beautiful and abundant lands of Costa Rica. It was there, in the enchanting town of Santa Teresa, that MartyParty was born. He fell in love with the art of surfing, patiently disciplining and training his body to coexist with the power of the Pacific Ocean. The riches of Costa Rica radiate with inspiration. Its divine beaches and majestic jungles are conductors of cosmic energy, charging the souls of its land with Pura Vida. Immersed in the peace and simplicity of equatorial life, Folb began experimenting with music production, utilizing his finely tuned expertise in software engineering. “The discipline of software design, coding and general computer knowledge transferred very cleanly into computer music design and coding,” he says. “Luckily I had the talent and musical skills to make my music creative and pleasing.”

2015-05-03-1430632161-2208314-MartyParty2.jpg

MartyParty’s signature sound flavorfully blends and bends genres such as hip hop, trap, club, dance, bass, and many more. One of the forefather’s of trap music, he began experimenting early on with hip hop beats and instrumentals creating a sound that was truly ahead of its time:

“I learned Ableton Live and started composing hip hop beats and, using melody and syncopation, tried to make the beat stand alone. The result was the MartyParty sound. Basically I sang or rapped with synthesized leads instead of vocals. The result of that first exercise made its way into my first releases as well as PANTyRAiD’s The Sauce, which is arguably the first trap record ever officially released.”

In addition to being an ex-software engineer turned world-famous producer and performer, Folb’s healthy lifestyle is also garnering attention from his followers. While finding healthy food choices on the road can be a challenge, at home, he endeavors to fuel himself with only the best ingredients. Raised in a culture devoid of fast food, processed food, and GMOs, Folb explained, “My diet since I was a child consisted of a garden to plate style of living, which was the norm out on the farm. Today, I am into the joy of health and vitality. It is one of my absolute passions.” His love for cooking and creating healthy recipes inspired a SnapChat tutorial (which now has 700+ followers) where he shares his creative culinary experiences with fans and healthy living enthusiasts. Another shining facet of the multi-faceted gem that is MartyParty.

“I just think cooking and mixing music are the same thing. It’s about experimentation, practice, creativity and avoiding what has been done before. I invent music and I invent recipes. They are both just channels of expression and I am so lucky and grateful to live in a time we can share these moments so easily.”

The term healthy lifestyle holds many meanings depending on the life who is living it. Another part of Folb’s health-conscious lifestyle is the sacrament of the sacred herb. With the Green Rush upon us, cannabis is finally being seen by the masses as a blessing instead of a Schedule 1 drug. As a musician in the electronic music scene, vices are difficult, if not impossible, to avoid. While some can be harmful to the body and psyche, others can enhance it. Finding this balance is often a blurred line between brilliance and darkness. When I asked Folb of his relationship with the seductive powers of substances, he eloquently answered:

“The DJ life is full of vice. Yes, when the moment is right and the people are right, I love a little synthetic therapy. However, I am way more into the joy of health and vitality. It has taken years of discipline and moderation to keep the ship straight but I’m proud to say I have it down.”

Even with so much experience already behind him, he has no intention of slowing down. Like the orbit of the moon, his momentum is steady and concise, powerful and unyielding. He will be releasing his 6th studio concept album titled RAW in June. “Music is a life long voyage of practice and experimentation, finding your sound, training your ears,” states Folb. RAW will be an exemplary manifestation of the spirit and mind of MartyParty. After hours of producing and months of fine-tuning, RAW promises to be a collection of sounds that can only be described as purple music. A specimen of profound capabilities and erudite perspectives, Martin Folb is one of the brightest colors in the human rainbow.

“I am so lucky to be able to translate emotion and thought into sound and have it translate back into emotion and thought for the listener — magic.” – Martin Folb
