The State of American Fashion: Alex Bolen

WWD: Please sum up the state of American fashion as you see it?
Alex Bolen: I think it would be awfully presumptuous of me to sum up the state of American fashion. I have one point of view, which is the point of view from our company and that’s a view as a manufacturer, as a retailer, as a designer.
I think that the term “American fashion” is perhaps a bit of an anachronism, one that used to mean some things design-wise. I think American companies were known for certain things, sportswear, whatever — and everybody’s doing everything now. And I don’t say that with any sort of sense of regret. I think it’s an evolution. So the idea of American fashion is a little more amorphous.
Now, New York-based fashion companies, that’s something else. Los Angeles-based fashion companies may have some different opinions on the matter. But I think that we as a group of manufacturers in New York could do a better job of looking out for our common interests.
I am not one who is particularly in favor of a group thing. I don’t think that solutions are one-size-fits-all, and I think that everybody has to, I wouldn’t say fend for

The CurvyCon Founders on the State of the Plus-size Market

As the retail market limps toward progress, the CurvyCon founders CeCe Olisa and Chastity Garner have curated a successful annual event centered on the plus-size category.
This past September, “This is Us” actress Chrissy Metz delivered a keynote speech and activations included a runway show and panels led by Fern Mallis. Here, the cofounders examine the state of the curvy market.
WWD: In your opinion, what in the market is necessitating the focus on the plus-size market?
Chastity Garner: Retail is struggling. Brick-and-mortar locations of major retailers are closing. The offerings for straight-sized women are oversaturated. Plus-size women are the majority of the women in the U.S., but have the least clothing options. If you want to stay alive in the retail market, you have to sell more to current customers or find new ones. The plus-size woman is that new customer.
CeCe Olisa: Social media has been key to expanding the plus-size market. Until recently, any conversations about plus[-size] bodies or fashion was dictated by the media — it was shameful and lackluster. Now consumers are taking the reins. A plus woman who expresses herself through fashion can be interesting, aspirational and accessible, which can translate easily into sales.

In 2010 David Crowley, an Iraq veteran, aspiring filmmaker and charismatic up-and-coming voice in fringe politics, began production on his film Gray State. Set in a dystopian near-future where civil liberties are trampled by an unrestrained federal government, the film's crowd funded trailer was enthusiastically received by the burgeoning online community of libertarians, Tea Party activists and members of the nascent alt-right. In January 2015, Crowley was found dead with his family in their suburban Minnesota home. Their shocking deaths quickly become a cause célèbre for conspiracy theorists who speculate that Crowley was assassinated by a shadowy government concerned about a film and filmmaker that was getting too close to the truth about their aims. Directed by Grizzly Man producer Erik Nelson and Executive Produced by Werner Herzog, A Gray State combs through Crowley's archive of 13,000 photographs, hundreds of hours of home video, and exhaustive behind-the-scenes footage of Crowley's work in progress to reveal what happens when a paranoid view of the government turns inward – blurring the lines of what is real and what people want to believe.

Transgender State Legislator: Not This Time

When Kansas State Representative Harold Lane announced his retirement, I didn’t hesitate to make it known that I planned to try become the nominee to fill his unexpired term. November 14, the six Democratic precinct committee members for Kansas House District 58 gathered together to make that nomination. It went to Reverend Ben Scott. Governor Brownback will now make an appointment to fill this seat in the Kansas Legislature.

There is much more to this story than a transgender woman from Topeka not being selected as the nominee. It was not a difficult decision for me to place my name into consideration for this seat. I have long had my eye on the right opportunity to come along. This one certainly had all the earmarks of the right opportunity.

Far more took place in that room than just the six precinct committee member electing a nominee. When Bryan Lowry of The Wichita Eagle ran a story on this little election, it was picked up by The Associate Press and went out coast to coast. It was also picked up by newspapers across Kansas.

Perhaps the most important thing I set out to do was to give a few young people, who happen to be transgender, some hope that they could live authentically and make it in this world. I’m thinking that we — me and all the other marginalized people who stand up and claim our dignity — are making a difference. The door has been opened. It can never be closed again. Speaking loudly and clearly I say to you, You can more than make it in this world. You can make this world a place where we don’t have to wonder if we can live authentically.

I got to give a speech before the election. A lot of people were there who didn’t really know much about me. Now they do. Several of these people, leaders in the community, came up to me after the meeting and shared how much they appreciated what I had to say. Amazing things will come out of this. Multiple requests have already been made for me to share about my journey.

I have learned in the last several years that when I put good stuff out to the universe, good stuff comes back to me. I am extremely excited to see what good stuff will come from this. I am certain of one thing, the universe knows exactly where I am supposed to be. It is leading constantly to that precise place and I will arrive at the precise time I am supposed to arrive.

A couple weeks ago, I registered for the final two classes to achieve my Master of Social Work degree from Washburn University. If I had been appointed to the Kansas House of Representatives, I would have needed to postpone my MSW by as much as a year and a half. I couldn’t have been at my MSW practicum, and at the State Capitol at the same time. I knew, going into this, that no matter what happened, it was good.

I shook Rev. Scott’s hand on the way out of the meeting and offered my congratulations. In the speech he gave before the election, he talked about justice for all people. I am concerned that Rev. Scott does not believe justice for all people translates in to laws that make it illegal to discriminate against LGBT people. I could be wrong. If not, you can expect me to step up again.

Finally, I believe that every time we get the word transgender into a newspaper in Kansas, we bump the football a little bit down the field; a little closer to the goal line. We didn’t lose. We bumped the football far enough down the field to get a first down. We have a new set of downs and we still have the ball.

The end of this story is not yet written. In the course of this experience, I was asked several times what it would mean to be the first transgender woman elected to the Kansas Legislature. My response has been to say, We need to get to a place where we don’t have to recognize the first of any population to achieve something; a place where the legislature in Kansas is representative of the diversity in Kansas. Touchdown.

Fake Lil Wayne Promoter Scams Alabama State University

The shady practice has reached epic levels, particularly online, and Alabama State University is the latest vicim of a fraudulent promoter.

Lil Wayne was expected to perform for homecoming week at the university this week, but officials realized they had been scammed by a person pretending to be the rapper’s promoter.

Wayne’s real manager Cortez Bryant officially ended the speculation.

“It saddens me to say but this concert is fraudulent. Wayne was never booked for this show. Graduating from an HBCU myself I hate that one of ours schools was victimized,” Bryant said. “Fake promoters are the lowest of people on this earth because they are damaging the integrity of artist and most important hurting the fans who are expecting to see their favorite artist. I’m now in contact with Alabama State University and will do everything in my power to work with them to persecute whoever was behind this. It’s not fair to the college students.”

ASU officially said they would seek litigation against those that perpetrated the act of crime against the school and the students.

News in Brief: Sight Of 400 War Elephants On Horizon Marks Hillary Clinton’s Arrival In Swing State

WHEELING, OH—Feeling the earth shake beneath them as they watched the procession climb over the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains toward their village, sources along the Ohio border confirmed Thursday that the sight of 400 war elephants marching on the horizon marked Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s arrival to the critical swing state. “Be still; some vast legion is headed our way!” said local automotive worker Dustin Collins, 35, who, like thousands of Wheeling residents, heard the rhythmic, thunderous beating of the cavalcade’s 10-foot-wide drums and immediately rushed to a window to gaze upon the advancing ranks. “Behold the standard-bearers at the head of each column, and lo, make out the trumpets’ piercing tones. It can only be the great armies of Hillary emerging from her stronghold in the East!” At press time, a large shadow had been cast over the city after the campaign released thousands …

Syphilis Alert for New York State

Earlier this month the New York State Department of Health, AIDS Institute sent Apicha Community Health Center a memo asking us to pass along information regarding New York States continued increases in syphilis.

As has been reported by Huffington Post previously, new cases of syphilis are increasing in New York State. Some new data has come out that shows in 2013 and 14 there was a 13 percent increase in New York City and a 44 percent increase in Upstate New York. In many Central New York and Capital District counties, the number of cases has more than doubled during this period.

Most of the case are seen in New York City and the surrounding counties. We’re seeing the most cases among males, especially gay men and men who have sex with men.

What does this mean for you?
All men in New York State need to be aware of the risk behaviors, signs, and symptoms of syphilis.

Syphilis is transmitted through direct contact with a syphilis sore during anal or oral sex. In men, sores may be found on the penis, anus, in the rectum, scrotum, perianal skin, tongue, on the lips, or in the mouth.

Having unprotected sex, multiple partners, or a new sex partner can all increase the risk of syphilis infection, as well as other STDs and HIV.

Syphilis symptoms include, in the first stage, a painless sore at the infection site (usually genitals, can also be around the areas listed above) that disappears. After that a rash, usually on the hands and feet–this is known as secondary syphilis. These symptoms will go away on their own but the infection is still in the body. Some people who are infected never show these symptoms at all, which is why it’s important everyone get tested.

Syphilis increases your risk of getting HIV if you are exposed. Using condoms does reduce the risk of infection through anal sex. Risk for oral exposure is also reduced if you use condoms during oral sex. If you are serosorting or using pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV, remember that these strategies do not protect against syphilis and other STDs.

Once detected, syphilis is easy to treat with a penicillin injection. Left untreated it can cause serious and permanent problems including heart problems, dementia, blindness, or death.

What should you do?
If you live in New York City ask your medical provider to tested you for Syphilis or visit one of New York City’s STD Clinics. If you do not have a medical provider, make an appointment with Apicha Community Health Center for nonjudgmental, individualized primary care.

If you don’t live in New York City, visit www.findSTDtest.com to find a syphilis testing location near you

Michelle Obama Wows In Black Vera Wang Dress At State Dinner

Michelle Obama made a jaw-dropping appearance alongside President Barack Obama as they welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House for the State Dinner on Friday. Dressed in a custom, off-the-shoulder black Vera Wang gown, FLOTUS’ famously-toned arms were on full display.

She first teased her glamorous evening attire on Instagram while giving us a “first glance” at the State Dinner. Even though the photo was taken in a dimly lit dining room, we were still able to see Obama’s stunning side-swept curls and nude nail polish color.

This isn’t the first time that FLOTUS has worn the Chinese-American designer’s pieces for a major fête, as she donned a similar off-the-shoulder Wang dress at this year’s Kennedy Center Honors. Yet, the mermaid fit and tulle skirt of this State Dinner gown proves why she tops our list of the best-dressed first ladies.

Tyga Owes State Of California $20 G’s

Tyga and his California lifestyle is going to be death of his bank account.

The State of California recently glanced at their records and have learned that Michael Ray Nguyen-Stevenson has been skimming out on his residential taxes.

Reports TMZ:

Tyga is getting hit from every angle on the money front.

Kylie’s BF just got slapped with a tax lien from the State of California to the tune of $ 19,124.98. He allegedly shorted the Golden State on his 2009, 2010 and 2011 tax bills.

$ 20k would ordinarily be chump change for a rapper at his level, but he already owes his landlord $ 70k in back rent, and has lawsuits piling up.

It’s also not the first time Uncle Sam has come after Tyga … the feds hit Tyga last year with a $ 100k delinquent bill.

Things could be worse, but he’s dating Kylie so he’s got collateral.

Oh, what a time to be alive.

New Agency — State — Aims to Showcase Models’ Personalities

Rene Gonzalez, a seasoned model agent who spent years working between Wilhelmina and IMG, wanted to create a modeling agency that catered to a new generation of models in a changing industry, one in which a model’s personality — and social media following — has become more important than ever.
On Sept. 9, Gonzalez will launch State, a full-service New York-based agency that aims to not only rep models, but also to create role models. “We’re calling ourselves digital managers,” he said. “What we would like to do is let kids know that yes, you can be a model, and yes, it can be glamorous, but there are other things behind it.”
State will support its clients’ images but also their talents and interests with a focus on social and digital content. In terms of what he is looking for in new talent, Gonzalez cited diversity and depth. “We really want models that have something to say,” he said. “When we do interviews, we ask what they’re doing in school. We’re about building who you are. The criteria is open for us; it’s about what makes you interesting to a larger audience.”
The agency represents about 30 models. Among them is Arizona native

Trump Woos Kids With Helicopter Rides At Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES, Iowa — The main concourse at the Iowa State Fairgrounds on a weekend is always a spectacle with thousands of attendees, but this Saturday Iowans shifted their focus to the skies, where Donald Trump’s helicopter circled overhead.

“Is that Donald Trump’s helicopter?” asked one woman as she stood in line to purchase tickets to the fair for herself and her three children.

“Yes, you can see it says Trump on it,” replied another.

Trump made a grand entrance in a parking lot more than a mile from the fairgrounds, landing his $ 7 million Sikorsky S-76 helicopter and taking questions from reporters before offering up free rides to youngsters.

“We started with smaller venues, but the crowds have gotten bigger and bigger,” he said, responding to a question about his plans on campaigning in living rooms and at house parties — the strategy most candidates utilize in Iowa.

The business-mogul-turned-GOP-presidential-hopeful brushed aside a few questions about specific policy stances.

“I don’t think the people care, I think the press do,” Trump said. “I’ve been getting politicians to pass whatever I wanted all of my life. Big New York City zoning deals are probably tougher than most of the things I’d be dealing with, with foreign countries.”

After nearly 15 minutes of questions, Trump told the children standing behind him — who were holding signs and clad in Trump apparel — it was time for a helicopter ride, drawing cheers. Among them stood 10-year-old Shay Doyle, a fifth-grader from Waverly who is one of Trump’s biggest fans.

“You can go to the fair and ride the Tilt-a-Whirl or ride on Trump’s private helicopter,” Tana Goertz, Trump’s Iowa state co-chair, told The Huffington Post. “These kids will never forget this experience.”

As The Donald headed into the fairgrounds, swarms of media and adoring fans surrounded his golf cart, making it difficult for the GOP hopeful to navigate through. Trump spent about an hour at the fair, skipping a scheduled visit to the infamous 600-pound butter cow because the crowds proved to be a security risk. Instead, he snacked on part of a pork chop at the Iowa Pork Producers’ tent, shaking hands and taking selfies.

“It’s a political tsunami, everywhere he goes,” Goertz said.

Presidential Hopefuls Ham It Up At Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — As Hillary Rodham Clinton walked among the booths of funnel cakes and corn dogs at the Iowa State Fair, trailed by a massive pack of media and onlookers, Donald Trump’s helicopter circled the fairgrounds in the air above.

That’s as close as Clinton and Trump’s massive entourages came at the state fair, a rite of passage for any presidential candidate. The respective Democratic and Republican front-runners each drew large crowds of gawkers as Clinton sampled a pork chop on a stick and Trump gave rides to children on his helicopter emblazoned with his famous last name.

“Nice to be here!” Clinton said as she started an hourlong stroll across the fairgrounds. Former Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin, who endorsed her this week and wore a straw hat to shade him from the blazing sun, accompanied her. Everywhere Clinton walked, large crowds followed her to get a photograph, a handshake or a quick hello.

Trump later made a grand entrance, landing his helicopter in athletic fields about a mile away and offering rides to children before he came onto the grounds. Almost immediately Trump was crushed by massive crowds seeking photos, handshakes and yelling encouragement. The pandemonium followed him around for roughly an hour — and during a stop for a pork chop on a stick.

“This is beyond what I expected. This is amazing,” Trump said. “It’s been a day of love.”

Both Trump and Clinton avoided getting up on The Des Moines Register’s “soapbox,” a place where candidates can deliver remarks and take questions from fairgoers. A candidate can be cheered or jeered, depending on the mood of the crowd and whether supporters or opponents are on hand. In 2011 Republican candidate Mitt Romney declared from the soapbox that “corporations are people, my friend,” a line that dogged the former private equity executive.

The front-runners weren’t the only ones seeking Iowans’ support. Vermont Democratic Sen. Bernie Sanders, who has become Clinton’s chief rival and has drawn tens of thousands to his rallies, pitched his policies to counter economic inequality from the soapbox. Former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, another Democrat, told voters from the soapbox that the main justification for the Iraq War was “all a hoax.” Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, a Republican, donned a red embroidered apron to flip pork burgers over sizzling grills.

When a helicopter flew overhead during Sanders’ speech, he was quick with a joke. “There’s Donald Trump. What can we do?” Sanders said. “I apologize. We left the helicopter at home.”

The state fair typically draws around 90,000 people daily during its 11-day run every summer, giving presidential candidates the perfect opportunity to meet potential supporters for Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucuses.

In the Agriculture Building, Clinton walked past plates of carrots, beets and large cabbages and peered at a pair of the fair’s famous butter statues — a cow and a tribute to the board game Monopoly. As she walked around the building, children sat on their parents’ shoulders, and people cheered from the rafters above the expo.

When the pack reached Grand Avenue, the fair’s main drag, Trump’s helicopter buzzed overhead as Clinton walked past stands selling funnel cakes, corn brats and lemonade.

“There’s Trump!” shouted one man.

Before wrapping up her visit, Clinton sampled a pork chop on a stick and a lemonade. Minutes later, she boarded a black SUV and was whisked away.

Trump took questions from reporters before he came to the fairgrounds and aimed barbs at fellow candidates while touting his place atop the Republican polls. He said he was rejecting campaign contributions and was prepared to spend up to $ 1 billion on his campaign.

Trump has been criticized for not detailing his policy positions, but on Saturday he said he would soon release a policy paper on immigration.

“You are going to love me in terms of immigration and illegal immigration. We’re building a wall. Nobody is going through my wall. Trump builds walls, I build walls. We’re building a wall. It’s going to be strong, it’s going to be solid, it’s going to be policed,” he said.

He added: “We’re going to have a big door for people to come in legally. We’re going to have a big, beautiful door for people to come in legally.”

Trump also said that, so far, he has not made any political missteps.

“Every time somebody said I made a mistake, they do the polls and my numbers go up,” he said. “I don’t think I’ve made any mistakes. I’m sure I will at some point. But so far you have to say, hasn’t worked out badly, right?”

During his time at the fair, Trump inched through the main concourse. “We’re going to straighten out this mess,” he called out to the crowd at one point. People pushed aggressively to reach out to Trump. At one point, a man yelled, “Biggest crowd ever is for you!”

After sampling a pork chop on a stick, Trump hopped on a golf cart and was driven away. People chased him on foot cheering.

Empire State Building Pays Tribute To Endangered Animals, Remembers Cecil The Lion

Cecil the lion, a majestic black-maned beast who once roamed the woodlands of Zimbabwe’s Hwange, was found dead last month on the outskirts of the national park. He had been killed by an American dentist for tens of thousands of dollars, then skinned and beheaded for a hunting trophy.

Cecil’s death has sparked outrage worldwide, as people everywhere lament the damage that humans continue to inflict on the populations of not just lions, but the planet’s many endangered creatures. On Saturday night, the Empire State Building served as a timely, sky-high reminder of this devastating impact, as images and video of threatened animals were projected onto the façade of the iconic New York City skyscraper.

Cecil was one of the animals featured.

For three hours, “insects, sea creatures, mammals, and birds crawled, swam, and flew over” the Empire State Building “as spectators ‘oohed’ and ‘awed,’” said The Verge. Snow leopards, tigers, lemurs, and manta rays were among the creatures on display.

The spectacle, achieved with the help of 40 projectors, was organized by the Oceanic Preservation Society and the filmmakers of “Racing Extinction,” an upcoming documentary about humans’ impact on threatened species.

“I’m hoping with this film and this event, we can raise awareness and start a movement,” the film’s director Louie Psihoyos (of “The Cove” fame) told The Verge.

NBC New York says the projections were a first for the Empire State Building, which is typically lit up with colors or, on occasion, light shows.

In total, 160 species were featured on the skyscraper. The New York Times says the production cost $ 1 million.

NLA- “No Days Off” + Talks Influences, Need For Girl Groups, & State Of R&B!

Fresh on the scene with their official single “No Days Off” featuring the Migos, NLA consists of Nina Moody from Jackson, Florida, Jessica Benson from Baltimore, Maryland and Janeen Casey from Little Rock, Arkansas. These three uber talented ladies were literally handpicked based on their hard work coming up on the Atlanta music scene. With collective musical influences spanning from Usher to Chris Brown to Destiny’s Child to TLC, Total, and Aaliyah. This group is as diverse as it is magical! NLA is giving you the feel of classic R&B with a club edge, and are more ready than ever (after four years of development) to make their mark on the music scene. NLA is signed to Good Look Entertainment and was curated by industry veterans, Keith Thomas and Terrence Carter. NLA has also recently joined forces with Migos for their new single “No Days Off.”

NLA

Take a listen to their new single below.

AllHipHop Caught up with NLA to talk the state of R&B, the need for R&B groups, their sound and more! Check out the interview below.

With the state of R&B and with the inability of R&B groups to last on today’s scene, how do you plan to make your mark, have longevity, and keep the genre alive?

We plan to put out good music that anyone can relate to. We aren’t really worried because the music matters most. Even though we haven’t seen a R&B group in a while, once you put something out that’s real, people can’t help but to gravitate to it.

Who are your biggest influences?

TLC, SWV, En Vogue, Destiny’s Child, Total……..but of course The Supremes and all that came before us. We pay homage and take a little from each group for inspiration.

Describe your sound.

We really have a urban sound. Right now we have been dabbling in the trap world. We want to make sure we make something the urban community can relate to…. what’s in the streets…. what people can feel.

What sets you apart from other groups?

There aren’t really any other girl groups out at the time, so we don’t really know how to compare or measure where we stand there but, we are really good friends, and what we have hasn’t been pieced together. The chemistry is really there, and we are making music that we love. We understand how important it is and how much of a blessing it is that we genuinely like each other. We all had our journeys, and we are still together. This separates us from the girl group world that has so many issues that people run from.

What do you think of the current state of R&B and what will it take for there to be a resurgence in the genre?

I think the current state of R&B is sad, so to be honest I think that in order for it to be revived, us as a community has to embrace what makes it so amazing. We bring that cool factor. We aren’t trying; it’s really what we do. We are trying to get back to that feeling that you had in the ’90s that made you love music. There are no girl groups off the top of my head that I can recite the lyrics to their songs. That’s sad, but we can definitely bring that [girl group] to the table at this point.

What’s next for NLA?

We are putting together an EP. We don’t have a release date yet, but we have put together an amazing body of work. Right now we have an amazing single out with Migos called “No Days Off” that has been receiving crazy radio play. We are constantly rehearsing and recording. Soon we will have a visual out for “No Days Off”. We are ready to go!

What other artists have you gotten the chance to work with?

We’ve worked with Shanell from Young Money, Rock City, Ester Dean, Yung LA, and Verse Simmonds.

If you had a wish list who would you want to work with?

Drake…..Nicki Minaj…….Fabolous

Lastly, is there anything else you would like to leave with your fans?

Continue to support us, and continue to follow us. Embrace us for what we are trying to do and bring back. We promise we will not disappoint; the music is amazing. It was even hard for us to even pick a single. We just really went back to the basics and hope fans can appreciate what we are bringing. Follow us on @NLAMusic on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Soundcloud.

Islamic State Unleashes Missile Volley On Egyptian Navy Ship

Details are pouring in that the terrorist organization Islamic State, or ISIS,  has unleashed a missile attack on an Egyptian Navy ship off the coast of Rafah in Egypt on Thursday. Not much information has been published about the attack, but there has been a rash of skirmishes in the Sinai Peninsula region which might explain today’s incident.

As reported by The Jerusalem Post, Islamic State’s Egypt-based operation, Sinai Province, said it launched the attack on the naval ship that was resting in the Mediterranean Sea.

More from The Jerusalem Post:

The Egyptian military said earlier a coastguard vessel had exchanged shots with militants off the coast of northern Sinai, an area bordering Israel and the Gaza Strip. The boat caught fire but the incident resulted in no casualties, the military said.

The International Business Times published a tweet that showed the demolished naval ship and the official statement from Islamic State stating more attacks are to come.

From the IBT:

An official IS statement boasted online that the naval attack was the first of its kind and the start of maritme operations in the Mediterranean. A witness, fisherman Abu Ibrahim Mohammed from Gaza, said the vessel was a gunboat that was sailing at a nautical mile off the coast when it caught fire – but the man did not hear the explosion. Later, he saw two smaller boats trying to extinguish the fire. A third boat came and towed the vessel away. He also heard gunshots.

The vessel was tasked with patrolling Egyptian territorial waters and has been used to move army and police personnel to Egypt. According to terror expert Charles Lister, IS probably used an anti-tank guided missile for the attack similar to the ones used in the Sinai.

We will update this post as the story develops.

Love Is Love as Last State Issues First Gay Marriage License

Louisiana, the last state to issue a same-sex marriage license, was off to a romantic start this afternoon. The first license was issued to a couple who work for the Jefferson Parish Clerk of Court and have been watching for the state to comply with the Supreme Court’s Marriage Equality ruling. After being together for almost 40 years, Celeste Autin and Alesia LeBoeuf made history by obtaining the first same sex marriage license in Louisiana.

Following closely behind was the first couple to wed in New Orleans, after obtaining a marriage license from neighboring suburb Jefferson Parish. Michael Robins and Earl Benjamin proclaimed husband and husband “under the laws of this nation and the State of Louisiana.” “It’s great that it’s happening in a state that we both love, louisiana,” Robinson told the assembled press. The waiting period was waived by the judge, and the couple said their next destination is Disney World.

In honor of Marriage Equality making it to Louisiana, New Orleans native John Boutte soulfully sings Love is Love in a track (full disclosure) written and produced by my husband Jeff with Three Cranes Productions, part of the proceeds going to It Gets Better. Artwork by L. Steve Williams, Jr.

As NOLA.com music critic Alison Fensterstock suggests: “Lie down in a meadow and hold someone’s hand while you listen. ” Or throw some rice at Louisiana’s new wave of newlyweds.

Golden State Warriors Win First NBA Title In 40 Years, Andre Iguodala Makes History

Stephen Curry’s miraculous NBA season is has now come full circle after the Golden State Warriors have broken a 40-year drought to win the 2015 NBA Championship.

Via ESPN:

Golden State forward Andre Iguodala was named MVP of the NBA Finals following the Warriors’ 105-97 clinching win Tuesday night, becoming the first player to garner the honor without starting every game.

It also marks the first time the Finals MVP has shared a team with the regular-season MVP (Stephen Curry) since Magic Johnson claimed the Finals honor in 1980 while playing on a Los Angeles Lakers squad with regular-season MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Their 40-year NBA championship drought is finally over.

A half century of misery in Cleveland drags on. LeBron James just didn’t have enough help.

World champs,” Curry said, letting the title sink in. “This is truly special. This group is a special group. From the time we started the season this is what we envisioned and a lot of hard work goes into it, all the way down to the last minute of this game. This is what it’s all about. … We’re going to remember this for a long time.”

James returned from Miami to deliver a title to his home region, but the 30-year-old, left to do most of the work by himself after All-Stars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love were injured in the postseason, came two wins shy of giving Cleveland its first pro sports championship since 1964.

They city’s three pro teams — the Cavs, Browns and Indians — have gone a combined 144 seasons without one of them winning it all.

James had 32 points, 18 rebounds and nine assists in Game 6 and was dominant during the series, showing why he’s the world’s best player.

The Warriors were simply the better team.

Sometimes that’s just how the ball bounces. Congratulations to the Golden State Warriors!

‘The State Of Marriage’: How Vermont Paved The Way For LGBT Equality

vermont gay marriage

The freedom to marry feels inevitable in 2015. Nearly 72 percent of Americans live in a state that views same-sex relationships as equal to opposite-sex ones. But how did we get here? For many, including small town Vermont lawyers Beth Robinson and Susan Murray, with Boston-based attorney Mary L. Bonauto, the journey began in the 1980s.

“The State of Marriage,” a new documentary, recounts the challenges in gripping detail as the story of Vermont’s historic establishment of same-sex marriage unfolds. Not without setbacks, the freedom to marry has since radiated throughout the world. In the film, the pioneering efforts of the men and women who sought to eradicate cultural and legal barriers for same-sex couples come into focus.

“Without the strategic exclamation point on it, I think Vermont was essential to keeping this movement alive,” Bonauto told The Huffington Post. “The film captures that exciting story.”

The film’s timely premiere on June 18 at the Provincetown International Film Festival arrives as the United States Supreme Court prepares to rule on the constitutionality of same-sex marriage. “The film is a bookend,” said Murray. “[The Supreme Court’s ruling] will hopefully, finally put this issue to rest.”

In the early ’90s, the LGBT community was “under siege,” says Freedom to Marry founder Evan Wolfson. Without any legal recognition for same-sex couples in the U.S., people were losing their kids in custody cases, getting fired from their jobs for being gay and discriminated against even after years of military service. The movement for LGBT equality was waiting for an opening and someone to take charge.

As a young law clerk in 1989, Robinson admired Murray’s work for lesbian and gay families. Murray described Robinson as a “small, incredible bundle of energy” with an “exquisite legal mind” fueled by Pixy Stix. It was the beginning decadeslong personal and professional relationship. Years before the legal battles began, they engaged in a grassroots movement, traveling to state fairs in Vermont to tell stories of real same-sex couples.

In 1994, Bonauto, the Civil Rights Project director at Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), pulled together a group of New England attorneys to discuss marriage equality. Skeptics thought it was “folly” or even “reckless,” she recalls, but “Beth and Susan clearly said there’s a path forward in Vermont.” After a series of hard-won victories, including the override of a gubernatorial veto, Vermont became the first state to legalize same-sex marriage through the legislature.

supreme court plaintiffs 1998

Plaintiffs in Baker v. Vermont, 1998. (Rutland Herald)

Working tirelessly, Murray and Robinson fought for the rights they knew their fellow Vermonters deserved. “[Murray and Robinson] are not self promoters. They did it because it was the right thing to do,” said “The State of Marriage” co-producer Marcia Ross. “They deserve national recognition for the contribution.”

“Both Beth and I were in private practice and not getting paid for this, and it took away from time that we would have spent building up our careers,” explained Murray. “We could not have done it but for the support of our law partners who were also willing to sacrifice in so many ways.”

Though opponents in the film speak virulently about the “consequences” of legalizing same-sex marriage, those in favor cite the changing tide of public opinion as evidence that equality encourages acceptance.

“The law plays a leading role in helping people understand what’s acceptable and what’s not,” Murray told The Huffington Post. “If the law throughout the land is that gay people are allowed to marry, that in turn is going to help a broader acceptance of gay lives. I’ve seen that in person in Vermont. It’s changed the societal message.”

“In the Civil Rights Movement, I saw with my own eyes that it cannot have equality for some and not equality for all. Everyone must be included. Everyone must have a palce at the table,” says Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), who emerged as a civil rights leader in the 1960s. “What Susan and Beth did was in keeping with what Rosa Parks and others did.”

Bonauto has since stepped onto the national stage to argue a pivotal same-sex marriage case that could bring marriage equality to all 50 states. In her opening arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court in April, representing more than a dozen gay and lesbian couples in Obergefell v. Hodges, she asked the justices to wipe out the “stain of unworthiness” that marriage bans produce.

“I hope that if we are fortunate enough to have a win in the Supreme Court — and I am not one of those people who sits around counting on anything, but should we win? In my view, yes — I’d like to think we’ll have the fourth decision in a row that says stop treating gay people differently because of who they are,” said Bonauto. “And I’d like to think that that would have an effect on things like non-discrimination laws. We have so much work to do from my perspective, like ensuring basic non-discrimination so that young LGBT people can grow up in a world where they are safe and respected. We face an epidemic of homelessness. There are so many systemic issues that haven’t received the attention they deserve.”

A sense of inevitability worries director Jeff Kaufman as well. “One of the things that we encountered while making the film is that there’s a lot of complacency these days,” he told HuffPost. “People don’t realize that political gains often slip back.”

“I don’t think you can totally understand what they had to go through until you understand what they were up against,” added Ross. “If we don’t have a sense of our past, it gets lost and distorted. So much of the movement started with such humble resources, and it not only took over the country, but the world. When they started this process, people thought they were nuts. It’s important to have a sense of that vision to spark further change and inspiration for the future.”

Knowing the outcome in Vermont doesn’t diminish the power of “The State of Marriage.” Instead, with the procedural tedium of momentous legal cases made digestible, the film presents itself as a legal thriller. Audiences will cheer. They’ll be reminded of how far we’ve come, and how far is left to go.

The Country’s First Openly Bisexual Governor Bans Gay Conversion Therapy In Her State

Oregon became the third state in the country to prohibit the practice of conversion therapy for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth when Gov. Kate Brown (D) signed the ban into law on Monday.

Brown, the nation’s first openly bisexual governor, was widely expected to authorize the bill, which prohibits mental health professionals and social workers from performing therapy that tries to change the sexual orientation of children. The American Psychological Association highly opposes gay conversion therapy, and the practice is widely condemned because it can lead to anxiety, depression, substance abuse and suicide among young LGBT people.

Earlier this month, Oregon’s state Senate voted 21-to-8 to pass the bill. The Oregon House also overwhelmingly passed the bill in March.

The bill did face some opposition among religious groups and parents, who argued that banning gay conversion therapy would infringe on religious freedom rights and parental choice, although the law only applies to state-licensed medical professionals.

Oregon joins California, New Jersey and Washington, D.C., which already have similar laws in the books. On the national level, President Barack Obama condemned gay conversion therapy in April, addressing a WhiteHouse.gov petition that called for a ban after Leelah Alcorn, a transgender teen, committed suicide. Alcorn, who identified as female, had posted online that religious therapists tried to tell her she was a boy.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, 18 states, including Oregon, have introduced legislation targeting conversion therapy in the past year. In April, the New York State Assembly overwhelmingly passed a bill banning gay conversion therapy, but the Republican-controlled state Senate is expected to vote against it. Bills in other states face similar political obstacles.

State Of Emergency Declared In Baltimore After Riots [Photos]

Baltimore is burning. A state of emergency has been declared by Maryland’s governor and the National Guard has been activated in the city after Monday’s funeral for Freddie Gray, who died last week while in police custody, led to protests which eventually spiraled into rioting and looting

Reports the New York Times:

Gov. Larry Hogan activated the National Guard on Monday and the city of Baltimore announced a curfew for all residents as a turbulent day that began with the funeral of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, the nation’s latest symbol of police brutality, ended with rioting by rock-throwing youths, widespread looting and at least 15 police officers injured.

The violence that shook the city broke out in the late afternoon in the Mondawmin neighborhood of northwest Baltimore, home to the New Shiloh Baptist Church, where more than 2,000 people — politicians, activists, White House officials and civil rights activists including the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Dick Gregory — had gathered for a morning of soaring Gospel music and passionate eulogies for Mr. Gray.

Reportedly at least 27 people have been arrested while CNN reports that six Baltimore officers have been seriously injured.

On Monday afternoon, Baltimore PD announced that gangs, including Crips and Bloods, had posed credible threats to officers.

It is being widely reported that the riots started in central west Baltimore shortly after school let out for the day. While there has been widespread unruliness, there have also been citizens trying to clean up and maintain order in their city.

Schools will be closed tomorrow in Baltimore. See photos of the carnage below and in the following pages.

Dallas State Trooper Ordered Counseling For Snoop Picture

A Texas State Trooper was disciplined and ordered to take counseling after posing for a picture with Snoop Dogg.

Dallas PD asserted that Trooper Billy Spears was not formally disciplined for taking a picture with the rapper, but they did take actions consistent with punishment.

DPS spokesman Tom Vinger said, “DPS does not typically discuss or release specifics of personnel issues unless they result in disciplinary action as outlined in Government Code 411.00755 and 411.0072. Supervisors counsel and coach employees on a regular basis, and these efforts do not constitute formal discipline by the department.”

Spears took a picture with snoop during SXSW in Austin, TX a few weeks ago. Spears said that Snoop asked for the picture. He maintains he vaguely knew who Snoop was, but didn’t know about his criminal record.

DPS officials that saw the picture on Instagram say that these alleged deficiencies call for counseling for posing with a known criminal.
Snoop has several drug-related convictions.

Because he is not being formally disciplined, Spears has not way to fight the allegations that will appear on his permanent professional record.

Dallas PD didn’t have any comment at the time of this writing.

The Odd Side: The Free State

Welcome to  another edition of The Odd Side, a column that explores the effects of Hip Hop’s transformation through new sounds.

This week, we will explore some dope artists coming out of the state of Maryland. Maryland might not sound like the next big spot that megastars will come out of, but that shouldn’t stop you from finding about about the music that’s coming out around the area. Luckily for you, a plethora of artists from The Free State has popped up with amazing tracks consecutively on Soundcloud this week, and trust and believe you’ll have them on repeat.

Chris McClenney – Booty (On The Floor)

Chris McClenney was referenced on the last Odd Side post dedicated to Soulection’s best artists. This week, the Maryland-based singer has released a cover of what may have been the 90’s hit “Pump Up The Jam” by Technotronic. With an image from the classic sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel Air, “Booty (On The Floor)” merges together nostalgic 90’s deep house and McClenney’s unique style with the soul.

TEK.LUN – Benjamins (TEK.LUN Remix)

There has been several remixes of CVIRO & GXNXVS’ sick cut Benjamins, but Baltimore producer TEK.LUN might be one of the best top remix it. Starting with echoed vocals from the original to create an intimate vibe, this remix evolves in different ways throughout. At one moment you hear the instrumental move in an upbeat fashion. But when the beat switches, it’s like you’re hearing an brand new version of the same remix while still maintaining it’s cool vibe.

Abhi//Dijon – ECS

Although Abhi//Dijon “Twelve” is fairly old compared to the last two cuts, it was still refreshing to see it show up on my Soundcloud stream.  This Ellicot City singer has taken R&B into an experimental state, using a unique sound established from electronic music to reinforce both his calm vocals and smooth approach. If you’re trying to get into what R&B is becoming, cross your fingers and hope that this dude releases some new music.

Soduh/Black Zheep/ICce – Best Friend Is An Alien

We don’t know what’s been in the air in Baltimore, but the city has a very unique rap scene that many has not been hip to. “Best Friend Is An Alien” is a trippy banger that has been put together well. Soduh supplies the odd chorus and verse to the cut, while Black Zheep and ICce provide their auto-tuned verses also. The song doesn’t attempt to be any deeper than it is, however, it keeps your speakers bumping respectively.

What do you think about this week’s list of tracks? Let me know on Twitter/IG @VBrinkley513

WATCH: A Field Guide to Spotting and Stopping the Homophobic Laws Coming to Your Home State

Don’t look now, but while marriage equality has been spreading across the country, homophobic lawmakers have found a sneaky new way to chip away at civil rights. And not just gay and lesbian civil rights — EVERYONE’S civil rights.

In some cases, they’re passing laws that actually make nondiscrimination against the law. It sounds nuts, but it’s happening right now, and almost nobody’s paying attention.

This is happening because the opponents of marriage equality have finally realized that they’re going to lose. Their backup plan? Pass laws that quietly revoke civil rights across the board, hitting gays and lesbians and everyone else along the way.

In Alabama, for example, Republican State Rep. Mike Ball just proposed HB56, a new law that would allow religious groups to disregard the marriage of any couple they don’t approve of.

He says it’s “not a major change in the law.” But the truth is that it creates a special new license to discriminate. It could be used by hospitals to stop couples from making medical decisions for each other. Or it could force married couples apart at homeless shelters. Mike Ball’s target is probably gay couples, but his law could also be used against interracial couples, or interfaith couples, or anyone with a previous marriage.

Different states are considering over two dozen laws like these around the country. And they’re hard to spot, since they’re usually cloaked in feel-good terms like “religious liberty” or mundane language like “commerce improvement.”

But like the telltale droppings of a rodent infestation, once you know what to look for, you can spot them with ease.

I made this video to explain exactly what these laws do, and how to identify them:

But if you’re in a hurry, here’s what you need to be on the lookout for:

  • Government-Required Discrimination: Laws that require government employees to turn away gay and lesbian couples. Any county clerk who does the right thing and helps an LGBT couple wed will lose their salary and pension.
  • Random Public Discrimination: Imagine if any time you needed a public service, you could be randomly turned away — whether it was riding the bus, asking police for help, or getting a tax refund. These laws let any public employee decide whether or not to help you.
  • Religious Lawbreaking: Some politicians have latched onto a few bakers and florists and photographers who don’t approve of gay and lesbian weddings, and created laws that give those businesses permission to discriminate against LGBTs. But the new exemptions actually go much further, letting any person or business break all kinds of laws, as long as they can claim they’re doing it for religious purposes.
  • Banning Nondiscrimination: This is the most jaw-dropping of all. When these laws pass at the state level, they prohibit towns from providing any new nondiscrimination protection. Once again, LGBTs are the target, but other groups — such as the elderly or veterans — are affected too.

So, obviously, this is a huge looming catastrophe that could do a ton of damage — it’s like the global warming of civil rights.

The good news is that because these laws rely on secrecy, they can be defeated, in part, by exposing their true purpose. I made a second video explaining five simple steps you can take to stop the homophobic backlash:

To sum it up:

  1. Be out. If it’s safe for you to be openly LGBT, do it. And if you’re a straight ally, be out about that too.
  2. Listen to Opponents. When people who oppose nondiscrimination laws talk about things that are important to them (like their job, their home, their marriage, their education, or their family), listen and ask questions.
  3. Tell Your Story. Once you’ve listened to someone talk about the things that matter to them, tell them how you could lose all of those things if these anti-civil-rights laws pass.
  4. Be Vigilant. Watch out for these dangerous laws popping up in your home state. In fact, they may already have been proposed — check the first video above to see if yours is on the map.
  5. Make a Fuss. If a dastardly lawmaker in your state proposes a law like these, don’t let them get away with it. Sound the alarm on social media, make a video about the freedoms you stand to lose, or start a petition.

These tactics were proven to be super-effective with marriage equality, which is why national public opinion has flipped in the span of about a decade.

Homophobic lawmakers know that the tide is turning against them, and these laws are disguised for precisely that reason: their authors know that if people found out what they REALLY do, they’d be a lot less popular.

And that means that discriminatory laws can be defeated, in the same way that marriage bans were defeated. The first step is simply shining a light on them.

Arizona Schools Chief Says Hip-Hop Classes Violated State Ban

John Huppenthal, an outgoing Republican school superintendent with a questionably racist past, used his last day in the office to issue possible funding sanctions on a school because it taught a class on Hip-Hop. In a letter issued this past Friday, Huppenthal is urging the state to enforce withholding of financial support to the school.

Huppenthal’s letter addressed to Tuscson Unified School District superintendent H.T. Sanchez took direct aim at the district’s decision to teach “culturally relevant” classes which is out of step with a state law. Cholla Magnet High School is mentioned in Huppenthal’s correspondence, which taught a history class, “Culturally Relevant Mexican American Perspective,” and used lyrics from the rap-rock group, Rage Against The Machine.

An English class at Cholla Magnet High, “Culturally Relevant African American Perspective,” was said to have included from KRS-One’s “An Introduction to Hip-Hop” eassy.

More from the Arizona Daily Star:

John Huppenthal, who lost in the election, said in a news release Friday that the state can decide to withhold funding from Tucson Unified School District for the courses.

“During my tenure as Superintendent, I have been closely monitoring the status of the Tucson Unified School District’s culturally relevant curricula to ensure that all TUSD students, regardless of their race or ethnic background, have access to a high quality education,” Huppenthal said in the release. “After a thorough review of materials from TUSD’s culturally relevant courses, I find that the district has failed to meet several provisions of the 2012 Settlement Agreement.”

The classes replaced TUSD’s now defunct Mexican American Studies courses, which were declared in violation of state law.

“I am deeply concerned by the fact that the noncompliance appears to extend beyond classes taught from the Mexican American perspective and now also includes classes taught from the African American perspective,” the release reads.

State Governer Jan Brewer, who once famously scolded President Barack Obama in his face, signed into law in 2010 a ban on race-related coursework. The idea was that these classes potentially promoted “resentment” towards other races.

Huppenthal was embroiled in controversy last year when he confessed to writing a series of racially iinsensitiveblog posts. Huppenthal tearfully apologized for his words, but it wasn’t enough to save him from losing his re-election bid in August.

Bowie State Student Sues Alpha Phi Alpha For $3M [VIDEO]

A Bowie State University student is suing Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. According to a lawsuit by Kevin Hayes, he was hazed while pledging the historically African-American frat and is seeking $ 3 million in damages.

Reports CBS Baltimore:

A 17-page lawsuit details how the student—a junior at Bowie State—says he was punched and paddled by other fraternity members.

Photos show the injuries 20-year-old Kevin Hayes says he sustained while pledging Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity at Bowie State University.

“It broke me down. It’s something I never felt before,” he said.

He says his punishers were other fraternity members.

“Something must happen so no one else has to deal with these issues,” Hayes said.

In the lawsuit, Hayes says nights of pledging could last five to eight hours, where he was “punched, hit and slapped.”

“They have a duty under Maryland law to make him safe,” said Jimmy Bell, his attorney.

Hazing is not tolerated by the national organization of Alpha Phi Alpha, which is headquartered in Baltimore.

A statement on the organization’s official website reads, “Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. strictly prohibits hazing in any form whether physical or mental as a term or condition of membership in the organization. Hazing is illegal and a crime in most jurisdictions. Aspirants to the organization should participate only in the sanctioned membership process of the Fraternity. Aspirants must not agree to submit to hazing in order to obtain Fraternity membership.”

Besides hazing, filing a lawsuit is certainly not the best way to get into a fraternity. That should go without saying.

The incident allegedly went down off campus starting in September 2013 until November of the same year.

According to the lawsuit, Hayes and other pledges were give “jewel shockers,” “back racks,” and “fat joes,” and beaten with paddles.
