Autumn Chase is painfully aware grief is a beast that won’t be chased off before it’s ready to leave. When an icy road and a dark night leave her a young widow, she’s forced to trade in her perfectly planned future for the unknown.  Like a child hiding from a monster, she pulls her covers up over her head with the intention of sheltering herself forever. But once an unexpected stranger shows up on her doorstep, Autumn has to choose between being alone or connecting with someone who is hurting as badly as she is. Noah Key, an emergency room doctor, has solemnly informed countless families that their loved one could not be saved. However, when his own wife dies suddenly there are no words to bring him comfort. His in-laws want him to fall to pieces to confirm his love for his late wife. His colleagues want him to take time off to grieve. The only thing Noah wants is to work enough hours in the day to forget his wife is gone. He’s written himself a prescription for a cocktail of distraction and exhaustion in order to trick his brain into thinking his life isn’t in shambles.  When the world keeps moving on without them, Noah and Autumn will need to decide if they’ll survive the storm or allow themselves to be swept away by it.

Martha Stewart Is Brand Ambassador for Aerosoles

Lifestyle doyenne Martha Stewart is partnering with Aerosoles to be its brand ambassador and collaborate on a line of footwear, handbags and accessories for the footwear retailer.
The first style will be a limited collection of rain boots for holiday, to be followed by a complete collection for spring that will include casual and dress flats, heeled sandals, luxury mules and slides, as well as espadrille wedges. Handbags and accessories will follow.
Stewart said, “It’s fun. What we’re trying to do with Aerosoles [is] make gorgeous shoes at the right price.”
She spoke about a recent visit to Bergdorf Goodman’s shoe salon. “You couldn’t move. There were so many people shelving out thousands of dollars for a new pair of shoes. The shoes were gorgeous, but the average Joe can’t go there. We’re trying to make affordable shoes for the average person.”
First up are the equestrian-inspired rain boots, under the tag Martha Stewart for Aerosoles, which will range in price from $ 79 to $ 99. According to Stewart, they will sell on Aerosoles beginning Nov. 1, and later on at QVC, where Stewart already sells her apparel offerings. Kristen Stewart Talks ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Reboot at Chanel Show

GIRL POWER: Kristen Stewart won’t say if she’s officially on board for Sony’s “Charlie’s Angels” reboot, but she’s a big fan of the project. Speaking after Chanel’s Métiers d’Art show in Hamburg on Wednesday, the actress revealed she is up to speed with the planned film, to be directed by Elizabeth Banks.
“Whoever ends up being in that movie, I can tell you right now — because I’m friends with Liz Banks — I mean, I can tell you it’s going to be really good,” she said, adding that she is a fan of the story about members of a female private detective agency.
“I think it’s a good time right now to do another one, because we’ve all changed so much. Women have changed so much, or at least maybe just, you know, perception and the cadence and volume of the voice of women has definitely changed. And I know Liz pretty well, and she’s going to reflect that, and I think it’ll be something to be really proud of,” she added.
The “Twilight” actress, who in recent years has starred mainly in independent films, has also made her first foray into directing with the short “Come Swim,” recently released as part

Jon Stewart: Donald Trump Is An Internet Troll Running For President

Comedian Jon Stewart returned to standup on Tuesday night, and wasted no time going after one of his favorite targets: Donald Trump.

“It’s like an Internet comment troll ran for president,” the former “Daily Show” host said of the GOP presidential frontrunner at the 9th annual Stand Up for Heroes event in New York.

(Warning: strong language ahead)

“When I was doing the program, we liked to make jokes about him because he’s hilarious and easily mockable,” Stewart said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “We would mock him with things such as, ‘He looks like a bewigged boiled ham,’ or something like that. So he would tweet in the middle of the night, ‘Jon Stewart’s real name is Leibowitz. He’s a Jew. Why does he run away from his heritage?’ You know, because that’s what I think most presidents would do. I remember Lincoln used to drunk tweet: ‘Hey, emancipate this, you fuck!'”

Stewart, who has had a long-running feud with Trump, was referring to tweets such as these:

Stewart expressed some disbelief that Trump is a serious contender for the presidency.

Are we really doing this Donald Trump thing? We’re really doing that as a country?” Stewart said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “He’s fucked. I like to put my name in giant letters on everything I own as much as the next guy, but the only other people that do that are like 8-year-olds going to camp.”

Then, he broke out his famous Trump impression.

“Where did I put that building? Oh there it is, Trump. Boom. Where’s my fucking helicopter? Boom, Trump,” Stewart said. “Where’s my wife? Boom, Trump, nice.”

If Trump is aware of Stewart’s jokes, he has yet to fire back on Twitter.

Stewart had words for people who say they like Trump because of his unfiltered views.

“People are like, ‘I like Trump; he says what he thinks,'” Stewart said, per The Hollywood Reporter. ”What he thinks is stupid. That’s like if your friend is like, ‘I would like to fuck your mom.’ Why would you say that? … I don’t give a shit if you’re politically correct, just be correct, correct.”

While it seems Trump got hit with the sharpest of comedic barbs, Stewart also told jokes about Ben Carson, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and even himself before wrapping it up with some exasperation over politics.

“I’m done with this shit,” he said, according to EW. “Done, done, done.”

Book 1 of the Piper Anderson Series

Danielle Stewart

Genre: Suspense

Publish Date: November 3, 2014

Publisher: Danielle Stewart

Seller: Danielle Stewart

Piper Anderson has been given a fresh start in the picturesque town of Edenville, North Carolina. But her plans of settling into a normal life are derailed when she witnesses a prominent judge in her community committing a violent assault. Running from her own past and fueled by a passion to make the judge answer for his crimes, Piper is forced to decide if she’ll play by the rules or achieve justice in her own way.  Complicating things further, Piper finds herself fighting a powerful attraction to rookie cop, Bobby Wright. Although she’s increasingly enamored with Bobby, his staunch belief in the justice system is in stark contrast to her own. She may not share his opinions about the effectiveness of the law, but she certainly can’t deny how safe she feels when she’s in his arms or how every kiss leaves her desperate for more.  For Piper, the idea of finally living an ordinary life with a man to love is tempting. However, fate keeps placing the judge, quite literally, in her path. Will she decide the only way to win is to be as wicked as the judge, but with righteous intentions? And more importantly, will Bobby choose to let her go, or follow her as she crosses the line and takes justice into her own hands?

Jon Stewart Gets Body-Slammed By John Cena On ‘Monday Night Raw’

Alas, Jon, that was an inevitability.

Wrestler John Cena is known to exact revenge on those who’ve wronged him, and he did just that on “Monday Night Raw,” schooling comedian Jon Stewart with his signature “Attitude Adjustment.”

“I’m just gonna do what I gotta do,” Cena said before hoisting the recently-retired “Daily Show” host onto his shoulders and body-slamming him to the ground.

While hosting WWE’S “SummerSlam” on Sunday, Stewart surprised fans by smacking Cena with a steel chair during the wrestler’s bout against Seth Rollins.

As CBS Sports notes, the move helped Rollins retain his World Heavyweight Championship and snag Cena’s United States Championship belt as well.

On Monday, Stewart attempted to explain his chair-wielding aggression. As a wrestling fan, he simply could not bear to see Cena “tie the great Ric Flair … because, in my mind, ‘The Champ is Flair,’” Stewart said. “Not on my watch. Wasn’t going to let it happen.”

Flair is a retired pro wrestler who clinched a record 16 world titles during his career. Cena is currently looking to tie that record.

Watch Cena’s takedown of Stewart in the video above.

Kristen Stewart Doesn’t Owe You a ‘Coming Out’ Speech

BY RACHEL KRAMER BUSSEL

Kristen Stewart has issued a bold response to those intent on confirming exactly what sexual label to pin on her. In the latest issue of Nylon, in which the actress appears on the cover, she tells anyone interested in her sexuality: “Google me, I’m not hiding.” She added:

If you feel like you really want to define yourself, and you have the ability to articulate those parameters and that in itself defines you, then do it. But I am an actress, man. I live in the fucking ambiguity of this life and I love it. I don’t feel like it would be true for me to be like, ‘I’m coming out!’ No, I do a job. Until I decide that I’m starting a foundation or that I have some perspective or opinion that other people should be receiving… I don’t. I’m just a kid making movies.

It’s a fitting statement from Kristen Stewart, not only because she’s called fame “the worst thing in the world,” but also because she’s saying, essentially, that the focus on her personal life detracts from discussion of her work — or anything else about her. It’s a reminder that Stewart doesn’t owe the Internet an official “coming out” — and to presume she does is insulting and insensitive.

MORE FROM THE DAILY DOT

Already, her sexuality has become part of the cultural conversation about Stewart — this article being no exception, I admit. Whereas Nylon simply went with “Riding Shotgun with Kristen Stewart” for a headline, countless reports about the interview have honed in on her comments about her sexuality, making it the focal point. Some, such as “Kristen Stewart plays coy over sexuality rumors,” made it seem as if she didn’t go far enough in her statement.

This is natural, I suppose, in a world where, as the Advocate explains, before a celebrity like Stewart has officially “come out, “media outlets create “a glossary of queer innuendo that is meant to signal to a reader that a person is gay or in a same-sex relationship, without actually stating it outright.” Their hilarious list of these ways of saying-it-without-saying-it — which includes “tomboy,” “gal pal,” and “sapphic circle” — highlight the absurdity of our need to make Stewart answer the question “What are you?” not for her satisfaction, but for ours.

By phrasing her comments as she did, Stewart turns the question back on the asker, pointedly making us collectively wonder, “Why do we care so much about who she’s sleeping with? What does it change about how we perceive her whether she’s dating a man or a woman?” Those questions, whether we’re talking about a famous movie star or the rest of us, are much harder to answer than a simple word can ever summarize.

In an interview with Beatrice in 1997, writer Jill Nagle said, “Sex is what academics would call oversignified. You can play tennis with a friend without worrying about ‘what it means,’ but you can’t do that with sex.” That quote has stayed with me, because even though in the intervening years, we’ve made a lot of progress in terms of being more knowledgeable and accepting of a variety of sexual orientations, sex acts, and genders, we still want a simple way of framing a topic that’s actually more complex, in many cases, than one word can summarize.

We still get so fixated on who people are screwing we practically salivate over every juicy detail — witness the media frenzy when an interview with Cate Blanchett was edited in a way that implied she’d had sexual relationships with women, followed by her clarification that she hadn’t, actually. Stewart does not want to be a poster child, and her comments, appearing two months after her mother was quoted in the UK’s Sunday Mirror confirming Stewart’s relationship with assistant Alicia Cargile, are a way of making it clear that she takes such fascination with her sexuality as intrusive.

Stewart is also making a larger point about the changing role of labels like gay, lesbian, and bisexual — namely, that for many people, they are beside the point. She went on to tell Nylon, “I think in three or four years, there are going to be a whole lot more people who don’t think it’s necessary to figure out if you’re gay or straight. It’s like, just do your thing.”

We’ve seen numerous similar sentiments in recent pop culture, from people who are proud, unashamed, and not hiding their same-sex attractions and relationships, but don’t want to be defined by them, from Miley Cyrus‘ pronouncements about being gender- and sexually fluid and Raven-Symone’s rejection of the label “gay” (“I want to be labeled a human who loves humans”) to Maria Bello’s embrace of the term “whatever” to describe her sexual orientation and Ilana on Broad City‘s declaration that “I have sex with people different from me.”

In their way, those rejecting sexual labels are offering up a very optimistic point of view, one that presumes that whatever your sexual orientation, you are entitled to explore it and define it for yourself, regardless of what anyone else thinks. This is, of course, true — though it’s vital to note that we haven’t yet reached the point where living either in the ambiguity Stewart praises or as an out gay, lesbian, or bisexual person means you’re free from discrimination.

Stewart’s right to find the questioning off-putting (if you don’t agree, ask yourself if you’d want your every date, kiss or act of holding hands, let alone what you do in bed, obsessively scrutinized). As Sarah Seltzer pointed out at Flavorwire, just as asking celebrities whether they’re feminists has led to an increasingly pointless PR spin cycle, so too does questioning them about their sexuality often come across futile and passé. Seltzer argues it’s in celebs’ best interest to remain as publicly ambiguous about their sexuality as possible, lest they be pigeonholed.

To some extent, I agree, but in Stewart’s case, specifically, her words don’t sound ambiguous. They sound like the opinions of someone who simply feels there are more important things in her public life than her personal relationships.

That’s not to say having out queer celebrities as role models isn’t important; rather, that those who want to take on that responsibility should be able to do so voluntarily, or else it’s pointless — a debate exemplified in the responses to Roxane Gay saying on Twitter that Stewart’s sexuality is not a big deal. Stewart clearly does not want her sex life to precede her acting in the public eye. She doesn’t want her sexuality to oversignified, or even, it seems, brought up at all.

The latter is unlikely to happen, but we can grant Stewart — and by extension, everyone else — the right to define or not define their sex lives as they see fit.

Petition Calls For Jon Stewart To Moderate A Presidential Debate

Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show” retirement is barely two weeks old, but there’s already a push to bring him back to the airwaves next year — this time as moderator of one of the upcoming presidential debates

“Over the last 16 years, Jon Stewart has played an influential and iconic role in covering U.S. politics and media,” the petition on Change.org reads. “We believe he should continue that tradition as a moderator at one of the 2016 Presidential Debates.”

The petition notes that Stewart has interviewed 15 heads of state, 22 members of the Cabinet, 32 U.S. Senators and seven members of the House of Representatives, as well as “scores of other political leaders from this country and around the world while establishing himself as the most trusted person in (satirical) news.”

In addition, the petition points out that with Stewart serving as host, “The Daily Show” won Peabody Awards for its coverage of the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections.

So far, more than 120,000 people have signed the petition addressed to the Commission on Presidential Debates, the nonprofit and nonpartisan organization that sets the locations and chooses the moderators for each debate.

Neither the CPD nor Stewart have commented on the petition. However, the organization spells out the qualifications on its website:

“The moderators are selected by the CPD. The CPD uses three criteria to select its moderators: a) familiarity with the candidates and the major issues of the presidential campaign; b) extensive experience in live television broadcast news; and c) an understanding that the debate should focus maximum time and attention on the candidates and their views. The moderators alone select the questions to be asked, which are not known to the CPD or to the candidates. They do not meet with the campaigns, nor do the campaigns have a role in moderator selection.”

At least one presidential hopeful has signed the petition:

Stewart has said little about his post-“Daily Show” plans, but his next big public appearance will be as host of WWE’s SummerSlam on Sunday.

He also reportedly intends to be active in animal rescues. Earlier this year, Farm Sanctuary announced that Stewart and his wife, Tracey Stewart, “bought a farm in New Jersey with the intention of providing a home for farm animals rescued from cruelty.”

But the creators of the petition are hoping to bring him back to television at least one more time.

“(S)orry for pestering you so early in your retirement, Mr. Stewart!” an update to the petition reads. “I hope you take all of this as a compliment and see how grateful these supporters are for your work.”

John McCain Gave Jon Stewart The Perfect Goodbye

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) made a cameo on the “The Daily Show” on Thursday evening to wish retiring host Jon Stewart a special farewell.

In a video montage that included appearances from Secretary of State John Kerry and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, McCain appeared with a puppet resembling Stewart — a reference to the puppet that Stewart has brought on his show resembling McCain.

“So long, jackass,” McCain said in the video.

Stewart’s last show aired on Thursday and featured guests from past “Daily Show” correspondents in addition to politicians.

Jon Stewart Loses It During Emotional Correspondents Reunion

There weren’t many details known about Jon Stewart’s final episode heading into Thursday, but Politico did report some big names were taping goodbyes for the comedian. If that’s not the biggest understatement of all time, who the heck knows what is?

Nearly every correspondent made an appearance, all to celebrate the man who gave them a job and a place to flourish. Wyatt Cenac even showed up to bury the hatchet over the public spat he and Stewart had during their past working relationship.

Steve Carell, Ed Helms, Samantha Bee and so many more all jumped in to wish their former boss farewell. But someone was missing. Who, who, who, who?

Darth Vader, upset by the constant comparisons to Dick Cheney?

Yes, but that isn’t who we were waiting for.

At last, there was Stephen Colbert, who showed up and delivered a genuine, heartfelt thanks to Stewart. Colbert didn’t praise the TV host just for employing him and the entire staff, past and present, but also for inspiring them, for setting the tone every day and for showing them how to be great at what they were doing.

Stewart sat very quiet, eyes welling up, clearly overcome with emotion. Colbert knew he didn’t want the accolades, but it didn’t matter.

He deserved it.

#TBT When Jon Stewart Starred on The Nanny

jon stewart the nanny

After sixteen years, it’s hard to imagine Jon Stewart as anything else but the host of The Daily Show. But, sometimes you’ve got to go back to actually move forward. In this case, we’re going way back to 1997, when a fresh-faced Stewart, two years out from being named the host of The Daily Show, took a small romantic role as Bob “the short Jew” MD on the Fran Drescher–led sitcom, The Nanny.

On the nasally show, Fran falls hard and fast for Stewart’s character who can, by virtue of being a doctor, park anywhere—“even at the fire hydrant in front of Loehmann’s.” It’s later revealed (spoiler alert!) that there’s a reason for the spark: Fran and Bob are cousins. “That was one of my favorite episodes,” Drescher told Vogue.com by phone. “I really love working with really talented comics because I think that they lend themselves to being really fine actors, too.”

As a tonic before tonight’s final Daily Show, we took a stroll down memory lane with Drescher to reminisce about that time she smooched Jon Stewart—way before he was everyone’s favorite fake news host.

Did you know Jon Stewart prior to him appearing on The Nanny?
I knew him as a stand-up comic. So I knew him enough to know that he was really up and coming. In the circles of comedy, he was definitely somebody who was stealing attention and getting noticed without question.

What do you remember most about working with him?
He’s really, obviously, smart, but also self-deprecating, and extremely charming. He would make fun of himself—how hairy he was, even his knuckles are hairy, that he’s of Russian Jewish descent, and that he was living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan—he was really very amiable.

Did you hit it off immediately?
He and I had an instant chemistry. I always tried to make all the guests feel really at home. It’s very hard to be a guest on a series; everybody’s so tight with each other. And because we needed to have an onscreen chemistry very quickly, I always kind of went out of my way to be very real and put people at ease.

Do you two still keep in touch?
Maybe a little bit in the beginning, but once he really took off with his show and got so busy, and then I became a cancer survivor and started running in a whole new direction. I think we kind of just lost touch—but not fondness. And after we would see other, it’s always a warm welcome.

What is it like to revisit your show after all these years?
I just saw it recently actually and I thought it was really good, really clever. A lot of the episodes I really, really still like and enjoy watching. We packed a lot of punch into 22 minutes. It was one of those magical experiences where it all comes together right and you capture lightning in a bottle. And it hardly ever happens in art or on TV with such a collective art form—but it did for The Nanny. And everybody felt it and everybody did the show!

Was The Nanny completely scripted or was there room for improv?
For the most part it’s scripted because we would rehearse all week before actually putting it on tape. Through the rehearsal process, there was a lot of opportunity to make suggestions and changes. We had to be very physical and comfortable with each other. I remember when Jon took me to his apartment on the show, and I was trying to act cool, but I was completely overwhelmed by the fact that this guy was so perfect for me. In the rehearsal process, we were just trying to work the material to make it as funny as possible. And because he was already entering the situation with my high respect and regard for him as a comedian, I was absolutely open to anything he had to say. I think that he was a little nervous because that might have been his first acting job.

He hid it well! You both seem like a well-matched pair.
Me and Jon are sort of cut from the cloth in real life. So the two characters that we were playing were comfortable and natural. I think Peter [Marc Jacobson] and I might have already been separated and Jon was married, so there was no love match there off-screen. But I remember thinking he was very cute, very nice, very talented—and if he wasn’t married, I might have made a play for him.

Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg Show Us Just How Sexist Hollywood Interviews Can Be

kristen-stewart-jason-eisenberg-awkward-interview

On a press tour for their new film American Ultra, Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg put a spin on the seemingly ubiquitous awkward press interview with a Funny or Die skit. Here the two stars decide to interview each other, but in a twist, the questions intended for Stewart are directed to Eisenberg, and vice versa. Eisenberg becomes noticeably annoyed after Stewart asks him what designers he likes, whether or not he’s seeing anyone, and if he’s had any work done. “This is really, like, not appropriate to ask me,” Eisenberg says in response, adding that the questions have nothing to do with the movie he’s promoting. “I get these questions a lot,” Stewart explains. The back and forth keeps going until it’s revealed that the whole thing was a prank. But wouldn’t it be kind of amazing if actresses would start swapping questions with their male costars from now on?

Jon Stewart Slams Donald Trump Supporters For Defending ‘Mexican Rapists’ Comments

Donald Trump has found himself in the center of controversy since he first announced his bid for presidency, and Jon Stewart is having a field day.

On Thursday night’s show, “The Daily Show” host told viewers he wanted to thank one person “who’s been there really throughout this whole run, but specially near the end of the run.” That person was Trump.

“Donald recently glided back into my life on his solid gold up-and-down people mover, cranked up the unauthorized Neil Young, opened up his crazy hole, and promised me I would never be without material again,” Stewart told his viewers.

The focus of Stewart’s segment was a string of anti-immigrant remarks Trump made during his presidential announcement speech. You may remember hearing the Donald say: “They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

Like many of us, Stewart was baffled by these comments, but even more so by the people who continued to defend them.

“The one good thing to come out of this is that the farce of his candidacy is finally exposed: his un-seriousness on display, for all people and voters to see! And the results will be obvious,” said Stewart, before showing that Trump is actually in second place among Republican voters in a national poll in three states flashed on screen.

“F–k me,” was all he could say.

Jon Stewart Offers The South A New Symbol To Replace The Confederate Flag

The Confederate flag appears to be on its way out, with retailers removing it from stores and governments discussing taking it off official flagpoles.

But as Jon Stewart said on Wednesday night’s “Daily Show,” there are still a few holdouts who want to keep what he called the “archaic symbol of racist insurrection.”

Those who support the flag claim it honors Southern heritage and history, as well as ancestors who fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War — but Stewart poked a huge hole in that argument.

“They fought for the South against the United States because of slavery. That’s the heritage you’re defending. I’m sure your soldier ancestors had other redeeming qualities, but this is the thing that they’re known for,” he said. “It’d be like saying you support flying the Nazi flag because you’re proud of their robust anti-smoking agenda. But that wasn’t really their thing.”

So what flag can go up in its place? Stewart suggests something we can all get behind: a pig on fire — honoring the creation of barbecue.

“That’s probably how barbecue was invented,” he said. “Ingenious southerners saw a pig on fire and thought, ‘I can work with this.'”

See his full takedown of the flag, as well as an image of its possible replacement, in the clip above.

Jon Stewart Slams Fox News Over Charleston Coverage

In the days since nine people were murdered in a church in Charleston, South Carolina, Fox News has criticized what it claims is a rush to politicize the tragedy, with Sean Hannity even calling it “almost like a sickness.”

“Yes, it’s a sickness. This rush to use tragedy to advance your narrative,” Jon Stewart said, sarcastically, during “The Daily Show” on Monday night. “Combine that with an inability for self-examination, an almost comical degree of self-exculpatory rhetoric, flag pins, little bit of leg and a complete immunity to irony — you got yourself a full-blown case of Foxabetes.”

As Stewart pointed out, Fox News was quick to politicize the deaths of two New York City police officers last year, blaming New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, President Barack Obama and others for supposedly worsening racial tensions.

Stewart also spoke about the effort to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of the state capitol, as well as other racist symbols around the city, including the very address of the church itself.

Check it out in the clip above.

Jon Stewart: ‘No jokes,’ ‘just sadness’

Jon Stewart dropped any pretense of humor at the beginning of the “Daily Show” on Thursday night, choosing instead to open his episode by addressing the tragic Charleston shootings with a solemn, critical monologue.

Malala Yousafzai Tells Jon Stewart ‘Normal Humans Like Us’ Can Bring Change

Jon Stewart had almost no jokes for his audience Thursday night in the wake of Wednesday’s mass shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

Instead, Stewart chose to focus the bulk of his show on the night’s guest, Malala Yousafzai, the 17-year-old Pakistani who won a Nobel Peace Prize for her work advocating for children’s rights and education.

“Our guest tonight is an incredible person who suffered unspeakable violence by extremists and her perseverance and determination through that to continue on is an incredible inspiration,” Stewart said. “And to be quite honest with you, I don’t think there’s anyone else in the world that I would rather talk to tonight.”

She was on the show discussing girls’ education and Davis Guggenheim’s upcoming documentary, “He Named Me Malala,” which is described as an “intimate portrait” of Yousafzai’s extraordinary life.

The teen told Stewart it’s important for regular people to speak up about injustice.

“Sometimes we wait for others, and think that Martin Luther should rise among us, and Nelson Mandela should rise among us and speak up for us,” she said. “But we never realize that there are normal humans like us, and if we step forward, we can also bring change just like them.”

Yousafzai’s life exemplifies that philosophy. She began to gain international attention in 2009, when she wrote a blog for the BBC about living under the influence of the Taliban. She subsequently became an international advocate for girls’ education.

The teen was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in 2012 while riding a bus home from school. A group of men boarded the bus, asked for Yousafzai specifically and shot her in the head. After her recovery, she founded the Malala Fund, a nonprofit dedicated to helping girls worldwide attend school. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014.

Stewart joked that, with the teen looking forward to college applications in the next couple of years, she “might want to work on her resume.”

Jon Stewart Says He Can’t Tell Jokes After Charleston Church Shooting

Jon Stewart makes his living turning the news into jokes. But on the day after a racially motivated massacre left nine dead at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, Stewart said he had no jokes to tell.

“I have one job, and it’s a pretty simple job,” he said on “The Daily Show” on Thursday night. “I come in in the morning, and we look at the news and I write jokes about it.”

He continued:

“But I didn’t do my job today, so I apologize. I got nothing for you in terms of jokes and sounds, because of what happened in South Carolina. And maybe if I wasn’t near the end of the run, or this wasn’t such a common occurrence, maybe I could’ve pulled out of the spiral. But I didn’t. And so, I honestly have nothing other than just sadness once again that we have to peer into the abyss of the depraved violence that we do to each other and the nexus of a just gaping racial wound that will not heal yet we pretend doesn’t exist.”

But having been down this road too many times, he also knows what will happen next. Or, rather, what won’t happen next.

“By acknowledging it — by staring into that and seeing it for what it is — we still won’t do jackshit,” he said. “Yeah, that’s us. And that’s the part that blows my mind.”

Stewart ripped those who suggest this is one person who lost his mind rather than the product of that “gaping racial wound.”

“In South Carolina, the roads that black people drive on are named for Confederate generals who fought to keep black people from being able to drive freely on that road,” he said. “The Confederate flag flies over South Carolina, and the roads are named for Confederate generals. And the white guy’s the one who feels like his country’s being taken away from him.”

Stewart didn’t do any humor segments. Instead, he devoted the rest of the show to his interview with Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize.

“I don’t think there’s anyone else in the world I’d rather talk to tonight,” he said.

Employers Far From Showbiz Can Help Veterans By Copying Jon Stewart

When Sgt. Sarah Serrano ended active duty with the U.S. Marines in 2009, she returned to Los Angeles to pursue her civilian dreams of acting and writing.

Serrano threw herself into networking, but as she told The Huffington Post, “One year and zero professional connections later, I realized why so many burn out quickly.”

The military doesn’t prepare veterans for an industry that trades in elbow-rubbing and name-dropping, while vets find themselves typecast — as providers of security and law enforcement.

“I cannot tell you how many times police departments have tried to recruit me,” Serrano said. “It can be anything from mall security guard to Border Patrol, it’s hard to get employers to see outside the uniform.”

sarah serrano

What society doesn’t see is the individual, Serrano observed. “We are usually seen as extreme cases of people in need of charity or acting with heroic valor, but there is so much more in-between.”

Serrano now writes, acts and models in addition to working with the LA-based group Veterans in Film and Television. The VFT links veterans with film and TV opportunities — and regularly sends members to specialized boot camps run by Jon Stewart and his crew at “The Daily Show” to help vets break into the business.

the daily show jon stewart

On Monday, The New York Times revealed that over the last few years, “The Daily Show” has been quietly running a program aimed at boosting veterans with film and television ambitions.

A request for Stewart to mentor a veteran sparked the idea for the Veteran Immersion Program, “Daily Show” senior coordinating producer Elise Terrell told The Huffington Post on Wednesday. Terrell and production manager Camille Hebert are the chief architects of the program and have been involved since its beginning in 2013.

“Jon came to Camille and myself because at the time we ran the internship program here,” Terrell told HuffPost. “He wanted to create a program for veterans to expose them to some of the behind-the-scenes aspects of television production and the entertainment industry.”

jon stewart veterans

Each five-week session brings together 24 veterans who use the “Daily Show” studio as their classroom. Once they’ve spent a week immersed in every aspect of production, they meet with the specific department (writers, producers, etc.) they want to learn more about. The program, which runs nights to accommodate the vets’ work schedules, ends with a career fair to help participants find opportunities in the film and TV business.

Several participants have gone on to land jobs with “The Daily Show,” “The Tonight Show” and NBC, according to Terrell.

Early on, there had been some concern about a potential culture clash between the “Daily Show” staff and the veterans, she said, but that quickly melted away. Now the program produces close bonds and gratitude on both sides.

Terrell recalls the first year of the program: “The veterans made us these dog tags and commemorative military medals and gave us the tags with our names on them. … It felt so ridiculous because we couldn’t thank them enough. This whole program has been trying to thank them for their service. it was this mutual thank fest.”

She remembers one veteran saying at the end of the course, “I got out of the military, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I felt totally lost. After six weeks, I know what I want to do and I don’t feel lost anymore.”

rebecca murga

Veteran Rebecca Murga is now a writer and filmmaker. (Photo courtesy of Rebecca Murga)

One veteran who has moved into the entertainment industry is writer-director Rebecca Murga. Once she served several tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Qatar as a public affairs officer following 9/11, and she is still a captain in the Army Reserve. She told HuffPost that vets with Hollywood dreams need to figure out the art and craft of filmmaking and the entertainment business itself.

“Unfortunately the military doesn’t teach you any of those things,” Murga said.

But what people do learn in the military — how to be resourceful, lead others and never quit — can be put to use in any industry. “Being a good film director is being a good leader, and leadership is a characteristic I developed in the Army,” said Murga.

Indeed, Terrell and her “Daily Show” colleagues are hoping that other industries where veterans aren’t commonly found reach out to them as well.

“The formula can really be applied to any sector: the medical industry, the financial sector,” Terrell said. “There’s always a way to apply this program to any kind of workplace. It’s easier than it sounds. It’s rewarding both on personal levels and on professional levels, and the veterans that have been hired on shows have contributed tenfold.”

In the New York Times article, Stewart said his show’s idea “is ready to franchise,” and he encouraged copycats.

“It isn’t charity,” he said. “To be good in this business you have to bring in different voices from different places, and we have this wealth of experience that just wasn’t being tapped.”

Serrano noted that veterans also offer great diversity — something that many industries could use more of.

“Veterans’ voices are so diverse because we are drawn from all segments across America to serve,” she said. “Less than one percent of Americans serve in the military, but that one percent is richly diverse.” She added that veterans “have stories that the average American doesn’t.”

One other benefit of military training: workplace tidiness.

“They clean up after themselves,” Terrell said of the veterans. “On the late nights that they’re here, we order pizza for them and they always stay and help us clean up.”

Jon Stewart Reportedly Bought A Farm In New Jersey For Homeless Animals

File this one under: Yay!!!

Famously animal-loving Jon Stewart is said to have bought a farm in New Jersey, for purposes of giving home to rescued farm animals.

The announcement was made by Farm Sanctuary, which has three of its own pastoral paradises for neglected and abused farm animals.

Stewart and his wife Tracey are well-known animal advocates who have a longstanding relationship with with the group. In fact Tracey has a book about animals coming out in the fall, called Do Unto Animals: A Friendly Guide to How Animals Live, and How We Can Make Their Lives Better, with some of the proceeds going to Farm Sanctuary.

The couple has a small menagerie of their own already — Tracey told USA Today that their brood currently includes two each of kids, pigs, hamsters, guinea pigs and fish, plus four dogs, three rabbits and a parrot.

“All rescues,” she said. “Except for the children.”

Farm Sanctuary spokesperson Meredith Turner couldn’t give The Huffington Post many details about the Stewarts’ reported farm animal haven, but she did say, “We are ecstatic that there are people in the world like Jon and Tracey who care about the plight of factory farmed animals, and we encourage others to join them in support of Farm Sanctuary’s efforts to rescue, provide shelter and advocacy for these beautiful individuals.”

Eric Bolling, Fox ‘The Five’ Co-Host, Slams ‘Dummy’ Jon Stewart

Well, that didn’t take long.

On Wednesday night, Jon Stewart called Fox News Channel “The Five” co-host Eric Bolling “the dumb guy” while interviewing one of the show’s other hosts, Dana Perino. On Thursday, Bolling fired back during his show’s “One More Thing” segment.

“It’s kind of sad, the guy is so obsessed with hating Fox News that he spent a lot of the time taking shots at us, especially me. Apparently, I’m living rent-free inside Stewart’s head. Whatever, Jonny boy. Your time would’ve been better spent talking to Dana about her book. It’s great. It’s optimistic. It’s positive. It’s upbeat. Had you done your homework, you might have learned something… dummy.”

“You showed him, Eric,” co-host Greg Gutfeld said.

“It’s on. The ping-pong is happening!” added Kimberly Guilfoyle.

Bolling was referring to Perino’s book, “And the Good News Is…,” which she was on the “The Daily Show to promote. However, she and Stewart spent much of the time talking about “The Five” instead.

Bolling and Stewart have something of a feud going on. Stewart has repeatedly lampooned “The Five,” and Bolling has taken to the air to fire back at both Stewart and Stephen Colbert, who had also lampooned the show on “The Colbert Report.”

Comedians Sound Off On Jon Stewart Leaving ‘The Daily Show’ At The ‘Night Of Too Many Stars’

What do some of America’s biggest comedians think about Jon Stewart leaving “The Daily Show”? When Stewart hosted the taping of Comedy Central’s fifth “Night Of Too Many Stars” recently, comics opened up about his decision to leave his longtime post and spend more time with his family. The biennial event benefits autism.

Some comedians on the red carpet for the event’s taping Feb. 28 disagreed on just how many stars is “too many” — “Weird Al” landed on a firm “85” while Sarah Silverman settled on a more conservative “no more than three” — but everyone said replacing Stewart will be a difficult task. They also had some very different suggestions for what he should do in his upcoming free time.

Find out what stars like Amy Schumer, Jim Gaffigan and Gilbert Gottfried had to say about Stewart’s decision below and watch the “Night Of Too Many Stars” broadcast and live telethon at 8 p.m. Sunday on Comedy Central.

Kristen Stewart Reinvents the Cat Eye: Why Charcoal Shadow Is the New Liner

Kristen Stewart

Ever since she chopped her long chestnut waves into a rebellious undercut, Kristen Stewart has parlayed her hair’s sleek androgyny into an allover signature style. Spotted at the Stella McCartney presentation in New York last night, the Still Alice actress accented her slicked-back cut with a punkish take on a classic cat eye: A thick charcoal swoosh that combined the look’s traditional wide-eyed appeal with the smolder of sooty eye shadow. The beauty moment was made all the more modern with the help of bushy, brushed-up brows and shaded cheekbones in place of blush. Factor in her nearly naked lips, and Stewart’s fresh take on after-dark beauty showed that playing with light and shadow can radiate just as much drama as a pop of bold color.

5 Reasons Rod Stewart Is Our Favorite Frontman On His 70th Birthday

Rod Stewart turns 70 on Saturday (Jan. 10), and in addition to wishing the rocker a happy birthday, we’d like to pay him a little tribute. Here are five reasons why we love him — a lot:

1. He is one of the last frontmen still standing.
Don’t believe us. Even Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin fame noted in The Telegraph, “There are only three or four frontmen left, from our time, who actually just kick the mic stand up and do it, and that’s me, Rod Stewart and Mick Jagger.”

Last October marked the 50th anniversary of Stewart’s release of his first single, his take on the blues classic “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl.” That’s staying power and Stewart is proof that if you love what you are doing, you can just keep doing it. He maintains an active touring schedule which this year includes New Zealand, Australia and Las Vegas, of course.

2. Half the world’s post-50 population lost its virginity with “Maggie May” playing in the background.
OK, a slight exaggeration, but please raise your hand if you associate that classic with the smell of Brut or English Leather. Uh-huh, point proved.

3. He’s on Facebook.
Sure, a lot of celebrities from the music world are on social media. But how many of them at his age rack up engagement numbers like Stewart’s? He regularly amasses 1.2 million views of his videos posted on Facebook (including the multiple times we hit the play button at work.) And how can you not love a guy who posts photos from his Rome hotel room without his pants on?

4. He invented the long shag haircut for men.
OK, maybe he didn’t invent it, but he sure brought it to the world stage. Stewart was way ahead of those long-shag cuts on Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee.
