Sears Details $443M in Expenses to Close 142 Stores

Sears Holdings Corp. detailed the hefty cost of closing 142 stores in a regulatory filing Tuesday. The store closures were revealed on Oct. 15 when the company filed its voluntary Chapter 11 petition for bankruptcy court protection.
Sears said it expects to “incur charges of $ 443 million” in total costs to shutter the stores. That includes $ 81 million in markdowns, $ 9 million in severance costs, $ 335 million in lease termination costs, $ 12 million in other charges and $ 6 million in depreciation in the third and fourth quarters.
Since the bankruptcy filing, Sears has tagged an additional 40 doors for closure.
The retailer, which operates under the Sears and Kmart nameplates, is trying to find a buyer for the company as a going concern. So far its chairman Edward S. Lampert, through his hedge fund ESL Investments, has offered a nonbinding bid of $ 4.6 billion for the assets. If accepted, that offer would in effect constitute Sears’s exit plan from bankruptcy. It is not clear any other party will submit a going-concern offer for the company. Liquidators are expected to submit offers, but those are geared toward winding the business down.

London’s Department Stores Will Get a Makeover to Celebrate the Suffragette Movement

ME TOO: London’s department stores are joining forces to mark the centenary of women’s voting rights in the U.K. Harrods, Harvey Nichols — which has been re-branded Holly Nichols for the month of September — and Fortnum & Mason will be commemorating the suffrage movement through dedicated window displays that will be unveiled on Thursday.
The window displays will be presented in partnership with the British Fashion Council and are part of London’s #BehindEveryGreatCity campaign celebrating gender equality and the progress of women since they won the right to vote in 1918.
Each of the department store’s window displays will pay homage to the West End street protests of 1912, when suffragettes smashed department store windows to get their message across.
The three department stores’ displays will feature a design representative of the smashed windows. Harvey Nichols’ window will feature a shattered glass effect alongside a famous quote by Emmeline Pankhurst, the leader of the British Suffragette movement. Pankhurst’s great-granddaughter, Dr. Helen Pankhurst, will unveil the quote, “Deeds Not Words.”
A smashed window effect will also cover the Fortnum & Mason windows, and behind the glass, hampers will be on display to show the food and blankets that imprisoned suffragettes would receive from their loved

Sandro Plans for Larger, Coed Stores as Men’s Turns 10

PARIS — There likely won’t be any iconic product launches or extravagant parties, but Sandro Homme is marking its 10th anniversary this year and has expansion plans that call for larger, coed stores.
“I am not really into celebrations,” said the label’s designer Ilan Chetrite, who added the men’s line of his parents’ budding apparel business a decade ago. It now sits in the SMCP Group alongside Paris brands Maje and Claudie Pierlot, controlled by the China-based Shandong Ruyi Group.
Chetrite, who relays his views firmly but with a soft-spoken demeanor, explained he has never been one to throw birthday parties.
“However, I thought it would be a bit selfish not to celebrate Sandro Homme’s 10 years because it’s a project, the work of a team, it’s a lot of energy and I would like to pay homage to the work that has been accomplished so far,” he added. “We’re having little celebrations, but nothing too ostentatious.”
Sandro turned to graphic artists at the agency Atelier Franck Durand to make posters for store windows in Paris that read, in French, “J’ai dix ans,” which means “I am 10 years old.” The statement is a nod to a song by French Eighties pop star Alain

Millions In Cocaine Delivered To German Grocery Stores, Plus Bananas

Whoops!

Nearly 400 kilograms of cocaine were hidden in banana shipments sent to Aldi supermarkets in and around Berlin, Germany, earlier this week, according to news site The Local. Police spokesman Stefan Redlich called the error a “logistical mistake,” Agence France-Presse reported.

German police initially valued the haul at close to $ 17 million, but they may have lowballed it. An updated statement said the drugs had a high degree of purity and a street price of nearly $ 44 million.

The shipments are presumed to have traveled a well-known drug smuggling route from Colombia to Europe, Germany’s Deutsche Welle reported. Investigators were reportedly still searching through Aldi’s banana supply for other illicit imports.

Amazingly, this is not the first time that Aldi stores in Germany have received cocaine with their bananas. In January 2014, The Local reported that police had found 140 kilos of the drug in those supermarkets in what was hailed as the second-largest bust in Berlin in 35 years.

Someone’s in trouble.
